Hey gen x, what retailers from your childhood (80s and early 90s) do you desperately wish were still around?

I miss Toys R Us. Nothing really compares. I don't miss the absurd prices that were higher than anywhere else. They really screwed up that business before it folded.

Yes, but only after their health had deteriorated to the point that it was move in with me or move into a nursing home. I don't have any words of wisdom for op. It gets tough as health fails. Hopefully, you won't be there anytime soon.

Still awful. I ran into a girl I went to grade school with when I was in college and that's what she wanted to discuss with me. Apparently, she was always given my tests to grade when we would exchange them to grade. I think she was the only one who could read it. She was still pissed (although otherwise happy to see me). I'm still told it's awful.

A classmate of mine popped up on Facebook and he’s… old

I had a friend who sent me photos from the 30th high school reunion, everyone looked old. I didn't make it to the 40th, that friend has passed away by then. I saw photos on the internet. Everyone is old af, I barely recognized anyone.

Well, it happened

I have one and a machine. The phone isn't currently plugged in, it's part of the cable, otherwise I would have already dropped it. I have an old bell dial phone (pre touch tone). When it rings it's loud af.

They're gone. I still have their photos and just some random crap. I'm sure my mom would be disappointed that none of the kids wanted her furniture. Otherwise, they weren't the least bit sentimental about stuff and had long since gotten rid of anything that I might have wanted, which wasn't much.

First rock concert was Cheap Trick, they were great. I've seen them repeatedly and they were always great. First concert of any kind was the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. They bring in kids from the city schools on field trips and play a concert for them.

It was dad and most people rarely wore seat belts that I can recall. I didn't start wearing seat belts regularly until a bad experience in the mid 80's where I slid through a wet (and probably oily) intersection and ended up stopping without a collision but basically being face to face with another driver that I just about slid into. I'm sure the look of terror was mutual.

How do people buy concert tickets any more?!

Posted by AproposOfDiddly@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 404 comments

notguiltybrewing@reddit

I've mostly given up. Every time I look at a concert I might want to see I'm shocked by how expensive they are. I'm not willing to pay $250 to see a washed up second tier band from the 80's, let alone pay for a second ticket for someone to come with.

Is it rare or unusual to be into your 50s and not having to take any doctor-prescribed medications?

Your brother is wrong. If you have good luck and good genetics you may never need them. My brother has followed a similar path of not doing anything "bad" he doesn't drink or smoke and has been a vegetarian for decades. Of the 3 siblings he has the most serious health problems and now is on all kinds of meds and has had a couple of horrible surgeries in the last year or so. It's an interesting theory, it's just not true though.

Have you reached the, "I'm too old for this shit" era of your life.

notguiltybrewing@reddit

Sure, but I'm too old for this shit doesn't mean being a dick to people's face (although I'm not innocent in this regard either, it doesn't really make it ok). Especially when they haven't earned it. If they have earned it, I'm more understanding, but if they are just there, not so much.

I received a creepy call -- am I (50m) now gullible senior scammer target?

Posted by nojam75@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 179 comments

notguiltybrewing@reddit

They certainly look at you as a target. But I will point out that in the old days, all the same information, your name, address and phone number, would have typically been in the white pages. And this wasn't necessarily a scam either. Contractors trying to drum up business, especially near where they are working isn't unusual or a new strategy on their part. I'm not saying they were legit, just that it's possible based on what information you provided.
