Ummm… can you guys jump anymore?

So… I don’t know what it was that made me want to jump recently, but I realized that I can only get a few inches off the ground! Like, what? I’m only 50! I’m a size 10-12 woman, not particularly athletic but not out of shape, and I was shocked at how hard it was. Can you guys jump?
Unlucky-Network-4159@reddit
mine as well jump
go ahead and jump

Might as well...

I have Rheumatoid arthritis. If I even attempt it there's a chance my joints will turn to dust.

This. I am 48 this June and found out a few years back when I stepped backwards wrong and broke my leg that I have a weird form of early onset osteoporosis and I've had it for almost 20 years. It has to do with the fact that I had leukemia when I was a kid but I can't imagine what would happen if I tried to jump and landed, not even wrong. Just landed.
prairiemusher@reddit
I can still jump higher than my truck, although my truck can’t jump at all so……..
Shoizzy@reddit
I tried to hop accross a 18" wide shallow ditch on a walk and was SHOCKED at how heavy slow and unnatural that felt. And then I remembered how it used to feel to jump across river rocks and huge boulder crevasses in the desert.
So shocked I googled and:
We lose short-twitch (short energy burst) muscle fibers as we age. Doing a little bouncing everyday can help.
I tried a few ways, jumping jacks, jump rope, rebounding, short slow jog section on my walks, and it got sooo much better--like almost instantly.
Lowered my pain, improved my focus and boosted my mood, too.
I'm talking 10 jumps, 50 paces or so.
But yeah. It was A MOMENT--realizing the top of the hill was behind me.
itgoesineasy@reddit
Nothing like I used to. I used to triple jump in High School and ran stairs for fun. Now a foot is about it.
Bright-Form730@reddit
Yes, but it always feels like gravity doubles when I try 😂
HighOnGoofballs@reddit
I had to jump across a creek on a golf course the other day and was pleasantly surprised by my distance
Complete-Fudge3163@reddit
I’m 60. I do 1000 jump ropes everyday. I break it down to 100 jumps rest 40 seconds 10 times. As we get older we need to move even more.
Tiler02@reddit
I am a baby boomer. I can still jump though. Just not as high as I used to.
HiFiMarine@reddit
It amazes me how out of shape we have become for being so active growing up.
Get outside people! Go for a walk, stretch, do some old school calisthenics, and lose some weight. You’ll feel better every day! Then do the most important thing and put down your screens. I’m going take my own advice now and turn my phone off as I enjoy my 10 mile Saturday run! Peace out ✌️
Miserable-Height-201@reddit
I’m actually trying, at the age of 50, to get to the best shape of my life. I don’t want to be old and out of shape. But there are certain limitations that I have. For example, I’ve had a kid. Two or three sneezes in a row, I’m peeing myself. Jumping jacks? Out of the question. Jump rope, that’s a struggle too.
But I do agree with you about putting the screens down and getting outside and active. I used to run, did some half marathons, but I tore two ligaments in my foot. Walking is good for me now.
MooPig48@reddit
My sis is a physicist therapist and she says if you can’t walk or jog then swim!
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
Ok, ex Marine…..I’m not inactive- I don’t own a car so I walk quite a bit, but yeah, I could be exercising more for sure. Have fun on your run!
she_is_recalibrating@reddit
OK, this is going to sound cuckoo bananas, but my girlfriend was looking better than ever and I said what the heck are you doing and she told me that she started jumping up and down every night 100 times. We are both 55. I started doing it a few months ago and I can’t tell a difference really but I CAN tell you that it is very fun and something about jumping up and down does something to my system to made me a little happier.
JayGee2791@reddit
I want more info on this! Jumping how? Mimicing small jumps like jumping rope? Or jumping up and down a foot or more? Good for you guys!
she_is_recalibrating@reddit
Jumping up, maybe 5 inches off the ground. I do it on the carpet.
Miserable-Height-201@reddit
Do we have to use a man’s version of 5 inches or can we use our version of 5 inches?

Never could jump. I was always the tallest kid in school, but I played "short" in basketball, because I have almost no vertical leap. I haven't tried in years.
reluctant_cynic@reddit
I have not tried but I did randomly try to skip a month or so ago. I realized mid way I had forgotten how and then twisted my ankle.
MageZero@reddit
55M 6’0”. I can still dunk a basketball with a 36 inch vert.
HTLM22@reddit
52M I found out I can, but just barely. I was giving a talk and instead of taking the stairs to the platform, I just jumped on like I have done many times. I......almost...... didn't make it. It would have made for a terribly embarrassing start to my lecture.
It was a big wake up call.
PerfectAd9944@reddit
I found out recently that yes I could still jump. I turned around and immediately started walking right into a moving box, it happened too fast for me to walk around it so I had to make a leap for it. I nailed the landing.
I was like YES!!
MediocreTalk7@reddit
Damn, people. Use it or lose it.

My thought as well. Plyometric training can improve bone density and reduce future falls.
For those interested in trying it, this Harvard Health blog post gives three exercises for beginners.

Nope. Just took a dance aerobics class for the first time in years. Discovered that I cannot jump. Knees hurt terribly for 2 days. I do fine on the elliptical machine (no impact).

Welcome to “that age.” 6 months ago I was supposed to check on my mom’s dogs while she and my stepdad were out of town for the day. I forgot the key to my mom’s house. 6 years ago I would have climbed the back gate and jumped to the back yard. The fence is about 6’ high. I climbed it, and realized I could not safely jump down.

I jumped over about a 3 foot floor mat. The 40 year old guy was impressed by the jump. I didn't tell him about the peeing part.
sweettreehuggerMd@reddit
No, I had two kids in my 40s, and my pelvis separated with the second. So I’m just glad I can still walk!
GmaDoo2@reddit
Oh wow, my pelvis separated with the birth of my daughter when I was 21. I’ve never heard of it happening to anyone else! 🙋🏼♀️
NtMagpie@reddit
Holy cats! I'm so sorry! Please tell me you guilt the second one for that, "I busted my pelvis for you and you can't rinse a dish!" 😉
galtscrapper@reddit
Yes. I have to make little jump out of my RV
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
That’s jumping down, though. Different. How high do you get when doing a standing jump?
galtscrapper@reddit
Oh good question.
I never could do a very high standing jump I don't think. I think the more important piece is getting yourself off the ground at ALL.
But actually the gold standard is how many moves does it take to go from seated (esp on the ground) to standing?
This is why I don't want to get fat. I watch my older fat friends unable to get up from a couch on their own. They need help wven getting up.
No_Session7694@reddit

If you do, keep knees bent. A straight legged jump can send you in for knee surgery (tears meniscus)

This isn’t normal and you don’t have to live with it!
For many women in our age group, the issue is genitourinary syndrome of menopause (aka vaginal atrophy). Thinning, drier tissues can cause incontinence and this can start gradually a decade or so before menopause. The good news is that vaginal estrogen cream (the prescription stuff) can often completely restore everything to working order (it’s also the fix for painful sex and difficulty reaching orgasm). And the cream is safe for virtually all women, even survivors of breast cancer, because it primarily acts on local tissues and doesn’t appreciably enter the blood stream like estrogen patches, gel, or pills.
If that isn’t the problem, and you have had this issue since you were younger, then pelvic physiotherapy can be a game changer. Ask your gynecologist for a referral!
UnrealizedDreams90@reddit
Yep. I started jump training last year (53m). I can do 40" box jumps. Years of kettlebell sw8ngs helped
Suspicious_Sundae931@reddit
I'm going to need more info here... does that mean you can go from just standing there to jumping 40" off the ground??
UnrealizedDreams90@reddit
Yes, and landing on the "box" (currently a chest freezer with a stack of gym mats).
For better reference, I can standing jump onto the top of my kitchen counter.
Suspicious_Sundae931@reddit
That, my friend, is a physical feat that at no time in my life I would never have even come close to!
Alwaystryin915@reddit
Nope. Gravity is mean.

I don't feel like j look out of shape but if I had to do anything physical to save my own life I'd die.
I struggle to get up from a squatting position; I have to push up on the floor or find something to help pull myself up; I finally realize why sometimes people fall and can't get up.
mittychix@reddit
I scooched down when they played “shout” at my nephew’s wedding and couldn’t get back up. A young man behind me had to help me up lol.

Oh my god, same. I've been gardening a lot lately. I'll squat down, pull some weeds or whatever, and then have to think through how I'm getting up, rather than just popping up like I used to!

I couldn't jump when I was kid, let alone now at 67. I can jump down though, does that count?
I'm slightly overweight and rarely exercise, but no aches and pains (yet).
Ok_Major8292@reddit
Why couldn't you jump as a kid. did you not know how or overweight?
CrankyCrabbyCrunchy@reddit
Was not active. Went to weight watchers for first (of many) time at age 12. No one in the family did sports or any activity. Hit 200 lbs at 18. Now 67 and at lowest adult weight 165 lbs which feels skinny to me.
Ok_Major8292@reddit
Dang what did you do back than lol. Im 20 and grew up w electronics so im jw did you watch TV or just lay around? No judgment i just get bored easily even with all this stuff and wondering.
CrankyCrabbyCrunchy@reddit
Elementary school was 1966-1971-ish. I likely laid around, don't remember. Definitely didn't hang out with a bunch of friends, kept to myself as I mostly did growing up. I've always been quite independent and enjoy doing things on my own. Rode my bike around the neighborhood I guess, rang doorbells 😄 the usual criminal activity.
I did get a horse at age 12 that we boarded somewhere so not like we had it in our backyard.

I just spent four months in an orthopedic boot after taking a walk. It was the first step for more fitness activities. Achilles tendinitis takes a long ass time to heal, and I think I should just modify my diet so I can sit on my butt and avoid another injury. ^((No, not really, that would be absurd.))
OkCalbrat@reddit
You aren't kidding about Achilles tendinitis taking forever to heal. I don't know how but I had it in both at the same time. I was hobbling around for months! 😕

I blew my knee really bad last week. Looking for a pair of almost new inline skates for the park.
mayhem77@reddit
That sucks man. I hope you have quick recovery. Stay up!
some_dude3645@reddit
I've blown knees from skiing and that was way worse. You know how it is though. Injuries happen. I'm not going to need surgery so that's good. Mostly it takes a little longer to heal than the old days but I will be back ASAP.
It's my wife that wants to get rid of the skates but I won't let that happen.
Ruby0pal804@reddit
My realization came at about 50. I was walking across a parking lot to go to a store next door. There was about a 2 foot wall at the edge of my parking lot. It was a step-down to the other lot. I approached it and jumped down between 2 cars....knees buckled, tumbled and almost rolled under a car. Me and my husband couldn't stop laughing because I could hardly get up. I was sore for about a week. I don't jump anymore.

Not really a medical reason, just normal aging. Being able to jump is the first physical action people lose as they age. The solution is to never stop moving. Stay active and flexible.
MediocreTalk7@reddit
Yes! This is not normal aging for me, and it shouldn't be for a lot of these people.

Check out people our age trying the skipping challenge. It’s hysterical and sad at the same time. I also cannot jump but will admit I have not attempted to skip for fear of embarrassing myself.
offpeekydr@reddit
A few years ago my husband and I started trying different rounds of older fitness programs.
Started P90X, and when you start you do a fit test. It was eye opening, to say the least. One of the tests was a vertical jump. Jump up with a post-it, smack it to the wall as high as you can get, measure it.
After 3 months, we retested. The difference was huge (overall, I'm a short girl whose never been a jumper).
I love getting all the different workout dvds from the late 90s to 2000s from thrift stores. I don't think it really matters what you do, just that you do something 5-6 days a week.
Chime57@reddit
Practicing karate in my 20s, my teacher pointed out that women don't jump. I told him it's because we are smart and know that the earth keeps turning, so when we jump, we land in a different spot than the place we jumped from.
He didn't agree. But I never did jump much, and now I most likely won't due to hip/knee/ankle not talking to each other.
MediocreTalk7@reddit
Weird.

Merrybirthdayto-me@reddit
I did basically the same thing. I was reading how many calories jumping rope burned and always looking for ways to lose weight bought a jump rope. This was going to be the easiest weight loss I’ve ever done! I did a lot of rope jumping in my younger day and was pretty good. I could double Dutch and all that and it was so much FUN! Couldn’t barely do two jumps in a row with my new jump rope. And it sure wasn’t fun. The same was true for roller skating. I was good in my younger day, even earned awards. Pulled those skates on confidently after years of not skating and it was a surprising, disappointing eye opener. I could barely move on them. Use it or lose it.
caffeine_nation@reddit
Oh my goodness that was a lesson. I can hop from one foot to the other, but just jumping up and down once was enough 😂

I was at a show and was dancing and jumping. Or so I thought. I was just bouncing on my toes apparently.
Rambling-Holiday1998@reddit
Not very well, but it is one of the things I practice weekly so it is getting better. I practice specific moves like putting on pants in the middle of the room so I have nothing to lean against, getting down and up from the floor, etc, to make my self better able to face aging.
I did find that it was easier to jump and get more height when I was at a Florence and The Machine concert recently. Probably some sort of magic spell cast by the Witch Choir. Or maybe adrenaline. I was able to jump up and down with the crowd quite easily that night.

I recently started gym classes where jumping on and off a wooden box is a thing. My brain tells me I can’t do it but I have slowly come around to realising I can. 70 now. Very little works exactly the same but I keep pushing all those muscles anyway, so I’m doing better than I thought I might at this point.
bbonerz@reddit
Aren't you 10 years a boomer?
Imagirl48@reddit
Technically all Gen Jones are boomers.
From a Reddit thread in this sub about a year ago:
“We are a micro-generation of people born roughly between the mid-1950s and the mid-1960s, bridging the gap between the Baby Boomers and Generation X. The term was coined by Jonathan Pontell, who argued that this group has a distinct identity shaped by unique cultural and historical experiences that set them apart from the broader Boomer and Gen X cohorts.
We came of age in the 1970s and early 1980s, a time marked by economic shifts, political disillusionment (think Watergate and Vietnam), and a transition from the idealistic '60s to the more pragmatic, individualistic '80s.We were too young to fully participate in the counterculture of the '60s but old enough to feel its aftershocks.
The name "Jones" plays on a dual meaning: "keeping up with the Joneses" (reflecting their aspirations in a consumer-driven era) and a slang nod to "jonesing," suggesting a yearning or craving for the promise of the Boomer youth they just missed out on. Culturally, we grew up with the rise of television, rock music evolving into disco and punk, and the dawn of personal computing.
We're often described as pragmatic idealists—raised on big dreams but tempered by economic recessions and a sense of lowered expectations compared to the Boomers’ post-war prosperity. Think of us a generation that got the tail end of the party but had to clean up the mess.”

That's one thing I miss. I've stopped almost all my jumping during exercise. The joys of getting older.

It's not the jump that's difficult now, it's the landing. I recently hopped off a small ledge. I felt like my feet and ankles were smashed up to my chin. My knees didn't speak to me for a week. My hips were also highly insulted.
theOtherMusicJunkie@reddit
I feel seen!!! Coming from a guy that played competitive volleyball for 20 years, with a decent 32" vertical. Knee and back surgery put an end to that, but I've still been active, just getting older and slower. Did a volunteer workday yesterday, rehabbing a house for 2 older veterans. No jumping, no landing, just stairs and ladders, think my body is taking the day off today.
Significant-Deer7464@reddit
High School Soccer was the beginning of the end for me. Should of had surgery but that was before arthroscopic. It was major surgery and could cause more damage than good. My sports days were over either way
Now there is no balance, no running, no jumping. Can't drive more than hour or 2 at most without stopping. 15 minutes minimum just to roll out of bed. Decades of antiinflammatories have caused their own damage. Hits keep on coming

I volunteer at a horse rescue and I take lessons too (56 years old). I use a mounting block to get on
Well recently there’s been 2x she asked me to get on a horse in their stall from the ground to test saddle fit and my god that was the hardest thing I have done in a while. I am sure it looked comical

If you want to do something you have to keep doing it. You can’t rely on your body to just have those moves at the ready anymore. If you want to jump keep jumping, if you want to run keep running, if you want to be able to sit on the floor and get back up again keep doing that. Our bodies are slowly petrifying.

Damn, you made me sad. I broke my wrist pretty bad and I have a metal rod in my arm preventing me from bending my wrist. I’ll never be able to cartwheel again, even if I could. I’m 54, only 115 lbs so it may have been plausible.
Awesomesince1973@reddit

Based on a joking confession with my spouse several years ago, I do one cartwheel every summer to prove I still can. (He refuses to watch because he thinks I will injure myself, so I find an opportunity with one of our adult kids as witness. This summer I am 57, so we’ll see how that goes.
But to answer your question, I noticed in one of my exercise classes last year that my knees strongly objected to jumping rope by hopping both feet, so I do a more gentle loping version one foot at a time.

Once we stop doing something we start to lose that ability. It's surprising and a bit scary when it happens. I realized I couldn't jump awhile back and was horrified. I focused on my overall fitness level and was able to jump again. I teach fitness classes now and do a lot of jumping every week. I have a physical job with frequent physical testing and recertification requirements.
Now sitting cross legged? Damn, I can't do it for more than a few seconds, it's so painful for my hips. So I'm doing a lot of stretching and relearning how to sit cross legged again.
You don't move it, you lose it!!
Suspicious-Price5810@reddit
It's not something I really thought about or tried to do in a very long time. Until about a month ago, I was in PT for my back and he told me to jump up onto a platform. I was like ..."dude, what?" So he demonstrated. "Yeah, that's what I thought you meant, are you sure that's not going to destroy my back?" He assured me that I'm capable. So I did it. Several times actually and he kept making the platform higher. It wasn't so bad but just not something I have attempted to do since I was a much younger person.

I read somewhere that jumping a few times semi regularly is really good to remind your body to build up physical protection from impact - which could save from nasty injury later on in life when you take a fall.
Acrobatic_Mango_8715@reddit
Elders should take falling lessons. There’s better ways to fall and reduce risk of injury. I just looked it up and it’s a real thing and could be fun.

I can still jump a bit, but I tried to do push ups last week and was shocked at how much of a struggle it was.
That’s a bit delusional of me considering that I’m a 48 year old who doesn’t do anything particularly active, but last time I tried it wasn’t that hard to do several pushups and it was easy when my kids (now teens, so yeah) were younger and I was carrying them around regularly.
It really is true that if you don’t use it, you lose it.
Also true that if you overuse it, you lose it. Or if you have some sort of injury, or fate just doesn’t like you, or…..

I've hit the taller ceiling before when I was younger and running about in the house, don't think I would have a chance of hitting that ceiling but I was under the overhang. It probably is about 7' because my dad put it in forever ago and he wasn't the best at planning, so not that impressive. Still hurt though.
Infinite_Winter4299@reddit
Ummmm..
No. I'm so mad about this, too. Can't dance, can't jump. Aging sucks.
CurrentFew6275@reddit
Sure, I can jump. I just don't land well anymore. 😂

Im 72, and I'm so stiff in the back I'm sure I would break something....

You are 72 yo or born in 72?

Born 1954, just had birthday for 72.

Hello! What brings you to the GenX sub? You’re the same age as my momma. No hate, just curious. And to answer the question.. well let’s see, I’m 51 and have never been able to jump high but I can still jump. I actually jump onto a step and do burpees as part of an exercise routine I do sometimes but I mostly try to just do strength training. I’m not showing off here, I’ve got meno-belly and that shit. You’d not know I workout all the time by looking at me.
QuestnsEverything@reddit
I’ve never been able to jump, so nothing new there. But I did skip down the lane to the mailbox today with my granddaughter! Try skipping. It’s a chore. I’ve been practicing so I don’t look a fool when we have skipping races. 😆
Ill_Salad_1022@reddit
Yes! I just posted about skipping above. I thought I could but one hip would not do it!
BlueGreenTrails@reddit
Yes but it hurts!
Ill_Salad_1022@reddit
Ace you tried to skip lately? I tried and was surprised one hip couldnt! I broke my femur a couple of years ago but I am considered a full recovery....I may have been a bit salty about it
Fire_Mission@reddit
It's not the jumping that's the problem, it's the landing.
deadbeef4@reddit

Playing hoops with the kid, emphasized a lay up and landed a little weird. lol almost blew out my knee. Have curbed the desire to really jump after that.
Good_Grief_CB@reddit
Trying to jump makes me feel like gravity has suddenly become 100x stronger
FriendRaven1@reddit
Arthritis in my hips, back, knees, and toes.
Jumping is not part of my life.
whatsasimba@reddit
Im not even going to try it. 6 months ago, I thought, "You know...its been a while since I took the stairs 2 at a time!" So, I tried it. It went pretty well.
Two days later, I had a pain in my hip socket thingy, like someone jammed a wooden BBQ skewer in it. Now that happens when I get more than around 7500 steps.
Im not curious about my athletic abilities anymore. The time for curiosity was 20 years ago. Now Im focused on keeping the abilities I do have.
Gullible-Biscotti186@reddit
I spilled a gallon jug of bar and chain oil in my tool box in the back of my truck.. Spent an hour cleaning it up and thought it would be “quicker” to jump off the tailgate instead of climbing down like I did to get there… When my big size 15 barefoot wearing ass made contact with the concrete I felt it from my butt crack to my brain and saw Jesus.
Geezguys3@reddit
Did Jesus tell you to not do that again?

I broke my right leg (and two ankle bones) - my last thing on my physical therapy was jumping on that leg. Nope. Not any more I'm not.
The next summer I broke the other ankle. Then walked around on it for three weeks. I found out when I decided to go to the walk-in clinic when it hurt bad enough that I wasn't sure I could make it back up the hill after climbing down some rocks to go fishing. Chronic pain for 40 years (migraines) fucks with your pain threshold.

I’ll be 53 next month, I’m in PT for arthritis in my hips, and I can still do a standing jump of about 5 or 6 inches. Granted, the PT exercises have me a bit stiff and sore. I’ll have to work at it.

smithe68@reddit
Haven't jumped in a bit, had knee surgery 8 weeks ago to clean up my meniscus and remove some debris. Went outside and did a standing jump up our front steps, 21" with ease. We have some big basalt rocks out front, one is 31" high so I gave it a go and managed to get it as well. I'll be 58 in a couple months. A year or so ago I could do standing jumps up the loading dock on our building at work, it's 48". I suspect once I've gotten full strength back in my legs I will be able to do it again and I might even try.
More_Law6245@reddit

Look up the ability to get up from sitting on the floor test as a fitness metric. It looks at how many movements it takes you compared to kids who can simply pop up.
Individual_Raisin684@reddit
I feel really lucky that my body still feels so good. I can do pretty much everything I could do as a young person. I make sure I don’t use my hands when I stand up from sitting on the floor and I keep my “Asian squat” on point. Pretty much anything I could kneel down for I do the Asian squat instead and keep my hip flexors flexin.

I do a brief leg workout 2-3x a week.

tallslim1960@reddit
I hear ya. My physical therapist says sitting and walking (work and home life) your muscles that allow you to jump antrophy and you need to rebuild them up. Combine that with aging knees, as I'm over 60 I simply cannot jump. Trying hard to get back, but it's difficult.

ThoughtIknewyouthen@reddit
Hm. I started off thinking like, what? but then thought about it for a second. I sort of skip steps going up stairs and hop off the ladder from the 2nd step so I just tried to jump and happy to report that even though I'm 20 pounds too heavy, got about 6 inches up.
KimBrrr1975@reddit
All those things are skills that need practice or the connections between brain and body shift. But you can get it back with practice. As a kid I would jump off the shed roof, and then up onto our 3-4 foot tall deck. Then when I joined the gym, my trainer asked me to jump on a 12 inch box and I couldn't do it 😂 😂 I had to start with a weight plate and work up. It was wild, not something I ever expected I'd just...not be able to do on a most basic level. A lot of it is just a mental shift.

Father to an active teen so it hadn’t occurred to me that some people my age might not be able to jump… and it makes me wonder about how our very different our experiences are in this generation.
In our family though, we’ve prioritized health, so not only do we have a fair amount of fitness and sport equipment but a fridge and cupboards filled with good foods too! And I credit the fact that I feel rather good for my age because I invest heavily in maintaining flexibility, balance, strength and stamina.
If I can offer one piece of unsolicited advice, it’s that it’s never too late to begin introducing better habits into your life, as a means of maintaining and even improving your quality of life.

Komaisnotsalty@reddit
It's a matter of practice and using muscles of certain types. We lose those as we age because we stop doing fun things - like jumping, which requires a specific muscle groups.
If you don't keep it up with things like using a skipping rope or something, you lose the ability to jump - regardless of your weight/size.
And that goes for a fair few things, not just jumping.
Yoga and doing jump rope, even just 10 minutes a day, can give you that sort of mobility back and anyone of any size and physical condition can do it, even those who are morbidly obese.
jitterfish@reddit
No but I never could. I have a psychic block from a Dr telling 10 year old me to never take both feet off the ground at the same time. I was incredibly accident prone so he would have said it as a joke but young me was like ok. Even doing yoga lying on my back with both feet in the air my legs shake, I have to reach up and touch them like I'm petting a scared puppy.
And considering last year in a moment of feeling carefree as I was running inside I leapt up on to the deck and tripped, ended up with a bruised bone and on crutches for a couple of weeks I think maybe he was right all along.

I sometimes tell people I can do a front flip with a running start. It’s been 35 years since I’ve attempted a front flip. But since I once did it, and haven’t “failed” since, in my mind I can still do it 😂

I can jump just fine. It's the landing that I can't take.

Will be 60 in less than a year. Yes I can jump and have great balance -- I spend a lot of time outdoors working around the farm and do yoga a couple of times each week. I can skip and even run/jog short distances; this is sort of annoying since I used to be able to do 5 K a decade ago.

Nope. I read somewhere that the muscle fibers used in jumping atrophy without use, just like regular muscle fibers. But you can get them back, just slowly and gradually start jumping again

Yeah but not as well as I could 20 years ago. Am heavier and actually a lot stronger, but not so much more explosive.
Misknowmer@reddit
Yup I actually do a lot of double unders and box jumps
Shoboy_is_my_name@reddit
50m. I can still jump like I used too but I don’t “train” box jumps as often since building my home gym. This “health club step” that most gyms have was what I’d use for box jumps. Last time I used this setup I was stacking 23 of the 2-inch risers and the platform itself is 4-inches. So my verticale jump was just over 4ft. I’d stand right in front of it and just jump. Started doing this specific jump when I was 39 and I’d box jump daily for like 20 minutes as part of my workout.
Somehow I managed to only fall 3 times out of the thousands of times I’d do this. Always started off with like 4 risers and add another after a half dozen or so jumps. Didn’t matter how high I could go I always started low and worked up to my usual height limit. I use actual wood boxes I built for this and only “train” at 36-inches. I don’t care anymore about higher PR’s. As long as I know and can “feel” that I can go higher than my 36” box I’m fine with it.
Missmbb@reddit

JenLiv36@reddit
Professional dancer here…yeah in many ways jumping is on the decline from 18-21 lol. Don’t get me wrong into my mid 30s I could still jump about the same height but the effort it took was completely different.
Now at 50 I can tell you jumping was my first skill to go into the dumps and I’m trained to do it and lean heavier into my fast twitch muscles than my slow( just meaning jumping came easier to me).
In age though my slow twitch muscles usage is definitely having its day lol. I stay grounded and accept that soaring across the room is now left in my past. Even basic petite allegro feels awful.
How’s skipping for you? Does that feel ok? It might be a good place to start just to do light semi jumping.
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
Wow, this makes me feel better. Yep, skipping and running are no problem- I was just taken aback by the sheer force of gravity- I can’t get very high in the air at all! (From just a standing jump, in my living room)

Yes, 54 F and jump rope or do box jumps weekly at CrossFit. Those fast twitch power muscles are how we’re going to propel ourselves off the toilet, chair, etc when we’re older. It’s not too late to get those skills back!

55, use it or lose it. I routinely push my limits sprinting, climbing, hanging and stretching.
kermitsfrogbog@reddit
Normal jump? Sure. But not without risking a little bladder leakage.
Pushing my ass up on a high ledge for whatever reason... suddenly I can't do that anymore. I need to lose a few pounds or work on my arm and core strength. Which I'm doing. That menopause weight is a bugger. Strength training is probably more attainable than the weight loss.
RevToy@reddit
I can, but nowhere near what I used to be able to do. I used to be able to stand underneath a basketball rim jump off both feet and grab the rim with both hands. Now I think I can maybe touch the bottom of the net.

I can honestly say at 52 I never thought about hopping.. now I know why!! Because I can’t 🤣🤣

It’s a skill, you can get it back. I’m 57f and I realised jumping felt hard. But it only took a few sessions to box jump.

This is excellent. For many of us, we lose abilities not because we are old, but because we simply haven’t done that since we were kids. We can regain function with practice, maybe not as easily, but definitely to a significant degree.

Yes I can. Because I learned jumping is a skill we lose as we age so I deliberately set about keeping and improving this skill. I’m 58 and can jump a little better than I could a couple years ago. Holy crap! I can still jump. I accidentally spooked our cat in the process though. Yes, I can still jump. I did long jump and hurdles in highschool. However, a few months ago, I got humbled at my son's track meet. I felt nostalgic and attempted to do a long jump. First off, I felt a strain in my abdomen while running. And secondly, I got a 12' jump. Although that might seem decent, the 17 year old version of me would laugh, point, and say, "Damn...you are old and slow AF!" Plus.. there were 5th & 6th graders jumping 14-15'. So yeah...

My knees are shot, so I don’t jump. But jumping is good for your bones, so if you can do it, keep it up or you’ll lose the ability. I could, but I don't. If you look at the research on aging, you'll see that the number one predictor of successful longevity is "don't fall." And the best way to avoid falling is "never be in a hurry" and "never take both feet off the ground." To that end, I have stopped jumping. I still exercise regularly, but I don't jump.
Large_Panic2894@reddit
Yes! Not very high, but I can jump without injuring myself. 55F, 5'8", 235
Crafty-Shape2743@reddit
It goes. Right along with not being able to get up off the floor.
There’s an old saying that’s worth remembering. If you don’t use it, you lose it.
3 years ago (at 60) I found myself on the floor and couldn’t get back up without A LOT of rolling around, grunting and the use of furniture. I decided that needed to change. I get on the floor every day now, do some light stretching and get back up.
It’s been a long journey but today, not only can I get back up easily, I can do it gracefully, without the use of furniture.
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
True wisdom.
Ok_Shoulder_8548@reddit
Nope. Gravity has very clearly increased in the years since I was a kiddo.
chasingjulian@reddit
I am a white boy so…no….I can’t jump.
ridinderty@reddit
I jump rope every other day. 3 - 3min rounds with 1 min rest between. Every 3rd Jump day I do 5- 5min rounds. I'll be 50 in 2 months
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
I need to start jumping rope.
dzeltenmaize@reddit
Getting down off of a chair now requires me to psych myself up and hang onto nearby surfaces instead of jumping down. I hike with poles now instead of hopping from rock to rock. It’s depressing
ttkciar@reddit
I've never been able to jump very high, even when young. Was always better at running, and when the Track coach tried to put me into a hurdles event, it was comically bad.
Trying it now, I seem to be able to get as much air at 54 as I did at 20 -- several inches, no more.
Angry_GorillaBS@reddit
Probably as much as I ever could. Which isn't really much. I'm tall, I'm already far enough off the ground lol. Would've probably helped with basketball though
Adventurous-Depth984@reddit
I tried a decade ago and experienced the same thing. Started training then. Now I can jump
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
How old are you now, and how did you train?
Adventurous-Depth984@reddit
Strength training. Leg day at least twice a week
Gweveraugh@reddit
58f here. I was on the floor at No Doubt last weekend. I can definitely still jump!
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
Oooh fun! I’ll bet it was a great show.
Asleep-Software-4160@reddit
Yeah, can do a standing 30 inch box jump pretty easily (I'm 6ft though and it's all in the leg).
jblue212@reddit
Yes, I can jump. I don't think my downstairs neighbor will appreciate if I demonstrate though.
Apprehensive_Ad3670@reddit
Omg I had a hip replacement several months back, and at the gym this week they wanted us to do box jumps, but only about 8 inches off the floor. I couldn't do it. I'm not sure if it's mental (because I was afraid to land funky on the bench), or if I really can't jump anymore. I guess I should probably start working on that. Humbling.
Ornery-Vehicle-2458@reddit
Damaged my left Patello-Femoral ligament, and it won't withstand "acrobatics". I can barely lead with it stepping off of a kerb.
thewatchwinder@reddit
the only time i have ever wanted to jump...lol...my entire life, was when i was going to be bitten by something ankle high (snake, loose dog, etc). id have to say, probably ..but i may never know adrenaline is a powerful hormone
sane-asylum@reddit
Nope, 3 torn ligaments in my right knee. I mean I can probably jump but I can’t land
hissyfit64@reddit
Yes, but I might pee a little bit
hissyfit64@reddit
My bladder thanks you for the award
Head-Change-7681@reddit
I have a bad back with a bad neck so the last time I tried to jump going up was fine but coming down hurt.
Ok-Actuator8579@reddit
Jump squats yes. Jumping jacks yes, but I’m not a fan of jump rope. I struggle and get tangled in the rope.
ShookMyHeadAndSmiled@reddit
I can jump, but I hate to think of the knee pain that will accompany the landing.
nunyabizthewiz@reddit
Not without peeing my pants
DreadPirateWade@reddit
It’s not so much the jumping that hurts, it’s the landings that do me in.
CommunicationNew3745@reddit
Lol, just need some background tunes to get inspired - https://youtu.be/i5yY73owDTQ?list=RDi5yY73owDTQ
retrokezins@reddit
In emergencies, I can jump but definitely risking an ER trip with that. Lol. Last summer, I decided to see if I could still jump and touch the rim on our basketball hoop and I could barely walk for a few days afterwards. Lol.
Difficult_Clerk_1273@reddit
I can, but I don’t because I have a history of hurting my feet and ankles just from ordinary walking.
thedarkforest_theory@reddit
I’m recovering from some knee stuff after being at least to this point a life-long runner. So…nope.
Davakar_Taceen@reddit
I just started doing jump rope again as a part of my exercise routing, its not pretty right now, but its small steps at a time.
Lost-Tomatillo3465@reddit
I'm starting jump rope again if that counts
Csonkus@reddit
I can still dunk. 6’1” 49 year old.
Trike117@reddit
Just noticed the screen name. Irony, I know it when I see it. 😁
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
LOL I didn’t even think about that! The hopping I do is on planes…..✈️
Dangerous_Strength77@reddit
I'm happy if I have a 3-4 inch vertical.
feelingmyage@reddit
Not really! I’m 59.
chickfixa@reddit
Hard on the joints 😊
KindheartednessOnly4@reddit
I’m not allowed. 😂😂 my dr said no high impact exercise. I think that counts.
I have been wondering if I can still do a cartwheel. I’m scared to try. Brittle bones and all. I broke my ankle and had to have pins and a plate and screws. I was walking across a parking lot and tripped.
fiddlenutz@reddit
Regular_or_BQ@reddit
Yes! I can jump, although I think a herkie is out of scope at this point.
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
Ugh, herkies- I used to be a cheerleader, too.
Zesty-B230F@reddit
I'm not doing parkour, but I could probably clear a couple of 2x4s.
KennstduIngo@reddit
Not currently. I ruptured my Achilles while playing basketball with my middle schooler in February. Make sure to warm up before trying too hard to jump, people!
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
Also ouch! Maybe that was my problem? Didn’t warm up?
KennstduIngo@reddit
If you did it cold, out of the blue, then doing some light warm ups to get the blood flowing would very likely help.
thirtyone-charlie@reddit
I would t even try
JETEXAS@reddit
I feel like my jumping is normal, but it's not like I was dunking or something when I was in my 20s.
Simple_Tadpole_9584@reddit
I don’t know about jumping but I had a frozen shoulder a few years and yesterday I tried lift a heavier bag of garbage with that arm without thinking and it was like my brain did not send a signal to that arm - complete failure to engage lifting sequence.
xxxbrimstonexxx@reddit
Not super high, but I can still get jump on the hood of a car or hop up on the deck when needed. Idid listen to House of Pain back in the day, and once dated a girl who was a Kris Kross fan, so maybe that helped...
Fantastic-Ad-2856@reddit
Power generation goes before strength.
Get to the gym and start inspiring people
Solid_Row3202@reddit
At 57 I could, until my leg broke and didn't quite fix correctly. Now I feel im truly walking like an old man, even with physio🙈
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
Ouch, sorry to hear that…
Solid_Row3202@reddit
Complicated healing due to other treatment. But im still hopeful i'll jump again one day 😊 never give up 👍
ishootthedead@reddit
The jumping is the easy part. The landing, not so much
ConstructionSame3253@reddit
Totally had issues jumping again when I started CrossFit. Read about it and it is totally a thing as you get older, but it is really good for you to start the process again. Penguin taps and jumping jacks with no equipment. Jump rope otherwise. Still can't jump super high, but definitely better than I was 3 years ago.
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
Yeah, it was scary to realize how shit I was at it- and I genuinely think you’re right, and I need to start doing exercises to improve, or else it’ll just get worse. I have this aging BS.
zombie_spiderman@reddit
Well no, but in my defense, I am a white man
MaximumJones@reddit
One of my all time favorite movies! 🤣
Trike117@reddit
Only for your love. https://youtu.be/uyTVyCp7xrw
Aromatic_Revolution4@reddit
Not anymore.
I could one-hand dunk a basketball well into my late 20s.
Now I can barely reach the bottom of the net.
Ok-Toe3535@reddit
Immediately where my mind went.
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
Haha- love this song. Maybe I need to channel it in my next attempt.
Strong_Medium_6646@reddit
No, my ankles will probably shatter if I try to! Running is no fun anymore either!
theblisters@reddit
Yes!
I could not at this time last year so I did a bunch of PT to strengthen my lower back and hips. I'm back!
Familiar-Seat-1690@reddit
Yes but it hurts.
B_Williams_4010@reddit
I can jump DOWN....
morrismoses@reddit
I mean, I can. But why do I need to? Nobody told me there would be jumping.
globehoppr@reddit (OP)
I can’t even remember the last time I attempted a jump, but.. it was a rude awakening, for sure.
sterling3274@reddit
I could never jump, so no problems here.
SomeLevel8419@reddit
I can jump, but I can’t really run anymore, more like lumbering.
Alternative_Fun5097@reddit
I don’t jump. I have bulging discs in my spine and I don’t want to make things worse.
BluesGraveller@reddit
Just so you know, a mouse can jump vertically about 18 inches and a rat can jump vertically about 36 inches. Y'all need to step it up.
Lakewoodian@reddit
Thankfully yes. Granted I can no longer dunk a basketball like I could in my mid 20’s, but I am still pretty spry. In fact I can still jump up on to the stage at the church if I get a two step head start. It is 4 steps high for reference.
Dull_Ambassador6232@reddit
59 yr old white guy here (white guys can’t jump). 5’8 165lbs. Can’t jump for shit and I’m an active hiker. That said, I was never much of a jumper
Global-Fact7752@reddit
Can't jump can run kinda, but look like a fool.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
I am a heavy white guy. I have a 2" vertical I am very proud of!
NihilsitcTruth@reddit
Some what I choose not to temp fate.

With these knees??
