I just realized I’m never getting another mixtape

It is always nice when someone would hand you a cassette or cd of some songs that they thought you’d like, or that they were trying to use to get a message to you. And I am pretty sure it won’t happen again.

I worked in college radio in the mid-late 80’s. I was a mix-tape god. Access to all the best new stuff, and old hits from the station library, and late nights in the production studio mashing up mixes for parties was awesome fun.
And man - the mixtapes I made for girlfriends never failed me.

You can get a playlist. Same thing, different medium. Less production labor, but the same effort can be put into choosing songs for you.
And, perk! You can play it on all your devices…not including your tape deck.

My kid got me a PSA Sabre Mixtape Vol 1 for my birthday!

Mixed thumbdrive.......
WokeAssMessiah@reddit
I could make you a mixtape exclusively from tapes released in the last 10 years

I still have older cars that have CD players, so I still rip songs and occasionally burn a CD. Made myself a mix this past week.
some_dude3645@reddit
Make sure you keep the stereos when you get rid of the cars

Be the change you want to see in the world.
I have a couple of friends who we have a little mixtape thing going on. We rotate through whose turn it is to make a mix tape. When it’s your turn, you make a mix tape and everyone gets a copy.

My 15YO son just made 2 mixtapes. He fed the headphone line out from his iPad into the mic line in on his walkman cassette player. Built a 45min playlist in Amazon Music and recorded it to cassette. Just for the experience (and also he didn't think the Wi-Fi could reach the far side of the house; didn't realize he could log into the range extender I put in the lower level).

Aww OP I feel bad. Here, I made you one from my MP3 collection:
Perfect Circle - Judith
Alice Cooper - Cold Ethyl
Anna Nalick - Breathe
I Mother Earth - So Gently We Go
George Michael - Freedom! 90
Tea Party - Turn the Lamp Down Low
The Smiths - How Soon is Now
Three Dog Night - Shambala

Here you go, bud. One single-sized mixtape.

Is that a Fight Club reference?
bendingoutward@reddit
That's not the intention (never watched it), but it can be anything you want.
Ok_Industry3016@reddit
Right on, thanks.
DeadManAle@reddit
I hate playlists and I always hated mixed tapes. I listen to full albums only.
Tough_Arm_2454@reddit
YouTube makes Playlists for you. And I love my XM radio 70s 80s 90s.
crab_races@reddit
I still make mistapes. But modernized, on YouTube. Then can also share with lots more people. I actually recreated a mixtape from 1993 and sent out to all my friends one Christmas. With the caveat that I couldn't find one song, I think Bed of Nails by The Cavedogs. Ah. No, I see it is there.
Astronaut6735@reddit
Sounds like a new app idea. Create a playlist to send to your friend. Actually, two playlists: side A and side B, max 12 songs each side. Call it mixatapefor.me (domain available for $8.80/year). Let's go!!!
notguiltybrewing@reddit
I don't even have a tape player right now.
KurtStation68@reddit
My friends would have m8xed tape battles based on theme - the best were the linear and nerdy facts we'd write along with cover art. In the CD era, I think I have one or 2 discs - songs are definitely obscure but original artistic covers can't be beat.
I know as much as I love this stuff, there's a lot of adulting to do. It's becoming a past time 😢
crashin70@reddit
And now you have to send them a link to your Spotify or apple tunes or whatever playlist...
It's just not the same!
HighBiased@reddit
I still make mix tapes. I usually make them for when my wife and I go on road trips.
Advanced-Two-9305@reddit (OP)
That’s very sweet. I like that.
kjs0705@reddit
Never say never.
StJmagistra@reddit
Do you miss the physicality of the cassette tape? I think a curated playlist is today’s equivalent.
MinimumAnalysis5378@reddit
I made a mixtape for a friend on his 50th birthday of songs from the year he was born. I gave it to him as a cassette and CD.
Ok_Industry3016@reddit
Always loved when a girl gave me a mix tape. She was thinking me and made me feel good. Simple cheap gift that was amazing.
SeaRayDav@reddit
Play lists could be on par but the personal touch would be lacking for sure
KeggyFulabier@reddit
I make mixes for people all the time, often I hand them a usb thumb drive.
stinkyrobot@reddit
I saw blank cassettes marked down at a dollar store today. I have no way to use them but was tempted to get one.
saposguy@reddit
I got a Playlist from a friend...it wasn't the same
CompetitiveSoil7901@reddit
I miss it a lot . Even though we can pick and choose on Spotify or I heart radio it’s not the same ! Also I’m so glad I have a cd player in my car lol 😂
SoCal7s@reddit
I have an iPod (a decade old now?) it’s my amazing mixtape substitute.
I think I made my last mixtape (actually burned a CD) in 2003.
zionzednem@reddit
Take the baton and make a cd or tape or playlist and pass it on. Sharing music can and must live on. We must teach if necessary.
