How long do you think you will live after retirement, based on your parent ages?

What will you do for your retirement years?
slyroast@reddit
My dad died at 56. My mom is still alive at 93 so I have no idea
Present_Type6881@reddit
My dad was laid off/forced into early retirement at 62 and then died of cancer at 64. I guess I'll be doing good if I live long enough to get social security.
Traditional_Leg_2073@reddit

Due to circumstances and bizarre maths, retirement might not be an option until I'm 80+.
More likely, death in service awaits.
LHCThor@reddit
30+ years after retirement.
My goal is to be retired for as long as I was working.
Available_Abroad3664@reddit
The women in my family all live to be like like 90s but the men average around 85. With chabges to Healthcare now I am thinking 86-88.
Lost-Programmer-6768@reddit
Since both parents are alive (80 & 77), I am going to have to check with grandparents who passed at 77, 84, 86, and 94. The grandparent that passed at 77 was a very heavy smoker (2+ pack a day) for years.
Lots of years left to annoy my wife!!
oldfartjr@reddit
20-25 years. Mentally sharp, but body will give out
trout715@reddit
lol retirement? I will die in the bathroom at my office. Good thing I work from home
Cantseetheline_Russ@reddit
My parents are still alive and in perfect health in their late 60’s. Judging by my grandparents, I’ll here til my 80’s at least b
QueenBBs@reddit
My grandparents all passed on their early to mid 80’s, my mom at 62 but she had a whole lot going on that I don’t and my dad is only 70 so I’m not sure.
Kodiak01@reddit
No clue. Contrary to their decades of unhealthy ways (the whole family could have been on Family By The Ton), I eat well, exercise regularly, and am in pretty good shape for 50.
Retirement? Don't plan on one. I'm never going to stop.
NorthAmericanSlacker@reddit
I have multiple grandparents and great grand parents that lived to be past 95. I turn fifty this year…
So yeah…I’m gonna be here a while.
judithsparky@reddit
I'm 72 now, so based on my dad another 8 years. Or based on my mom and her parents, another 25.
ogpharmtech@reddit
Based on my parents, idk I'll make it to retirement.
Dad opted out @39 and Mom had cancer, took her out at 62
Secret_Computer4891@reddit
I have no idea. My dad beat cancer and is still kickin' at 74ish. My mom died at 68, but she was a train wreck. Her death was avoidable.
Ok_Ambition8538@reddit
What is this retirement you speak of???
BradleyFerdBerfel@reddit
Not sure my parents ages are super relevant on account of they never smoked or drank and I'm a chimney fish.
GlobalTapeHead@reddit
My parents are still alive and very healthy and independent. My dad’s older brother and sister are still alive in their 90’s. Based on them and my grandparents, 30-35 years is possible.
memymomeddit@reddit
Well my maternal grandmother is still alive, so probably for a while.
janebenn333@reddit
I am currently retired. Got "retired" by my employer last year when I turned 60. (I'm an elder Gen X).
What I've been doing is caring for an elderly parent. That's the fate of a lot of us I think as our Silent Gen or older Boomer parents refuse to go into care homes or can't get into one because there are not enough spots.
I've also experimented with writing which is something I've wanted to do all my life but alas was consumed with my career and my family.
chaoshaze2@reddit
I will likely die at my desk

My dad passed at 48 & my mom 68….58?
Repulsive-Carpet9400@reddit
Retirement. Lol. .
sidneyjoy@reddit
Same, death will come first.
SouthernTrauma@reddit
It's a crap shoot for me. Mom died when she was 53 but my dad is still going at 89. I'm 61 and do have some health issues but nothing particularly deadly. Could be next year. Could be when I'm 90 something.
Ineffable7980x@reddit
I expect well into my 80s. I've already outlived my father. He died of cancer at age 58. So at 61 I've already exceeded that. My mother is 87 and still fine. My grandmother -- her mother-- lived to 99. My Mom's side of the family all seem to make it to at least 85, and many into their 90s. My other grandmother died in her early 80s. The grandfathers weren't as lucky, but both were in their 70s. So my Dad seems to be the outlier. On top of that, I don't have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high sugar, etc.
Outrageous-Aside1771@reddit
My extended family regularly lives to high 90's or even over 100. I plan to travel.
AndiagoSupremo@reddit
None of my uncles or father saw 80. Heart issues, but they all smoked and ate a lot of red meat.
cheim9408@reddit
It’s not just based on my parents age. My mom’s dad died at 46 (I’m 40 now). My mom died at 67. My dad’s parents both died at 51. Dad is alive as far as I know. Though I probably won’t hear anything when he dies. I had an uncle die at 38. My favorite cousin died at 34. Another uncle died at 64 and my aunt died at 70. Longevity doesn’t exist in my family. Only positive I have is that I quit smoking in 2012 and don’t drink alcohol. Nearly all my losses were due to alcoholism.
Gloomy-Community-199@reddit
First I have to retire (which I can do next year is I want to). That said and economy dependent, if genetics are anything to go on I’ll have about 30+ years left (I’m 56). My dad died at 90. His father died at 92. My great grandfather died at 94. My mom is still alive at 82. Her dad died at 93. Her mom at 86. My great grandmother on that side died at 94 too. My great grandmaster died at 62 from pneumonia.

The record in my family is 96 and I sincerely hope I don't live that long.
RevolutionaryDrop206@reddit
my mom is 96, lives alone, drives, plants a garden each year. She spent today cutting back & fertilizing all her roses (around 50). Cooks & bakes for company. Keeps her home & car immaculate. She texts, listens to podcasts & never forgets a birthday. Dresses fashionably, and donates food monthly to those less fortunate. It’s all what you make it.
cocobear114@reddit
im really hoping i take after my moms side. they live pretty long, some to their 90s. shes in her late 70s and totally fit and in great health. walks 4 miles a day. dads side on the other hand is terrible. he died in his late 60s, his dad in his early 50s, my grandma at 65 or so. im 51 ...time will tell! so far im holding up well, feel like im still in my 30s

Long enough to borrow money from everyone. Not long enough to pay it back 😄
revbillygraham53@reddit
Very presumptuous of you to assume most of us will get to retire.
LordDarthAngst@reddit
My parents died in their 70s. Their early deaths were due to poor life choices e.g. smoking, high fat diet, no exercise etc.
I’m trying to avoid the pitfalls by doing the opposite. I think I will definitely make it into my 80s.
irishjo13@reddit
I won’t get to retirement if I go based on my parents’ ages when they died (58 & 65) but I’m still hopeful and planning on retirement. I want to be a snowbird and go on a lot of cruises.
goldinox@reddit
My dad quit working around his 81st birthday and died 9 months later. Thinking retirement isn’t a good longevity plan for me.
Border-Babies@reddit
85-90 based on: my dad died at 84, my mom is 85 and will be here another 5-10 years easy. Both grandfathers died in their late 80s early 90s. Both grandmothers died giving birth or from diabetic shock 27 hours after giving birth.

Maybe 80. 85 tops. My parents are 74/75 and not in good health. One might make 80. One might not.

20 years, statistically

Plan retire around 55. My parents are both in their late 60s. My remaining grandparent is in her late 80s. I had two great grandmothers that lived into their 90s on my maternal side. So I may get a decent amount of time after retirement.
Labcorgilab@reddit
I've never been able to picture retirement. Even when I was younger dreaming about life. Both my parents died in their 60s so if I'm fortunate enough to retire, I'll get maybe 5 years
BaldAndOld@reddit
25 years or so. I plan to spend it traveling and enjoying hobbies with current and new friends
tonna33@reddit
I don't think I'll be able to retire. So I'll be working until I'm about 80. My parents are 79 and 77. My dad just had his birthday (he's 79) and mentioned that he's moving a bit slower now. It makes me a bit sad and worried because he doesn't normally share things like that.
Capital_Pea@reddit
neither of my parents lived to retire. dad died at 59 in 85 and mom died at 48 in 87. i’m 57 and likely can’t retire until 65.

75 to 80. Everything after 75 is a bonus year.
Rude_Veterinarian639@reddit
My parents both passed in their early 60s. My grandparents all lived to late 80s/early 90s.
The grands and my parents all went within 2 years. Rough time.
Im 50 and will die with my boots on lol. I do t see retirement in my future at all.
brandysafinegirl@reddit
My mom is 73 and is in really good shape and health. Her oldest sister is 93 and her other sister is 80 both in great health for their ages. The 93 yr old just went to an assisted living place last year and she still lives on her own there in a small apartment. I’m not in as good as shape as my mom but I’m hoping to make 80.
303FPSguy@reddit
The only thing that will save me from an eternity of misery and labor is the sweet, sweet icy grip of death.
I legit cannot wait to die so I don’t have to work anymore.
lando-hockey@reddit
Just get a job at Home Depot. You can walk around and just tell people you don’t know where anything is.
lando-hockey@reddit
Everyone lives to their late 80’s or mid 90’s in my family and has for generations. I’m not sure I want to hit 90 based on seeing my parents at 80 even though they’re mobile and in really good shape with just 3 of 4 knees replaced and no major health issues. I expect the medical advancements to make it a bit better in the future. However, one might want to be careful about what you wish for.
Tryingnottomessup@reddit
My mom is 82 and still working bec she is not ready to retire. My passed away when he was 44 in 1974, so I already beat him.
I give myself somewhere close to my mother, fingers crossed 🤞
Kindly_Jellyfish_451@reddit
I don't like to speculate. My parents both died in their late 60s due to lung cancer (both heavy smokers), and I never smoked. I also have a much healthier lifestyle overall than they did.
I do realize, though, that my odds of getting lung cancer are a lot higher than other nonsmokers because of the second hand smoke I was exposed to through my parents (this was before smokers started going outside to smoke...my parents even smoked in the car).
EnjoyingTheRide-0606@reddit
My mom died at 39, I surpassed her lifespan almost 20 years ago. My dad had heart failure at 70 and lived to be 83. My grandmother lived to mid-90’s and my aunt (mom’s relatives) will be 93 in 2 months. My dad’s side has morbid obesity and lots of heart problems (one uncle dropped dead at bfast at 42!). I favor mom’s side and thus have planned to live til 95.
My friend’s mom is 108. I asked why he worked until 72 (2018). That was when he said his mom was 100 and he’d likely live into his 100’s too. Well she’s still living on her own, with a caregiver showing up daily for hygiene assistance!!
grandmoo@reddit
Based on my mom (died at 40), I'm (26f) years past my expiration date. According to my dad (died at 81), I've got at least 14 more to go. His brother lived to 96 or 97, so I'm hoping to take after him 😁
elphaba00@reddit
It's hard to tell. I had a great-grandma who lived to be 105, but her daughter (my grandma) and a brother lived to be in their early 70s. My grandma's other siblings lived to be upper 90s. My great-grandfather only made it to his 40s because of cancer.
My maternal grandma lived to be upper 70s, but smoking since she was a preteen probably cut that short. My maternal grandpa lived to be almost 90, but he was too mean to die.
xtrobot@reddit
Mom passed within a year of retiring, dad at least made it a handful of years. I'll be lucky if I get to retire at all, so who can say.
No_Survey_5496@reddit
20-35 years
Business_Coyote_5496@reddit
mid 80s so 20 years retired
MollyDog2638@reddit
No one in my family, going back multiple generations, has ever lived to be 80. My mom and dad came close, dying at 78 and 79 about a year ago. I am planning my retirement on the assumption that will be the same for me. Hell, at 58 I am planning now that I probably have about 20 years left.
sunfish99@reddit
My mom lived until 79, longer than anyone else in her family; her parents died in their mid-60s. My dad's family all lived to a minimum of 89. I'm 60 and currently semi-retired, though not by choice.
I'm waiting on a follow-up ultrasound to screen for breast cancer. If it turns out to be bad news, I think it's most likely I'll be taking after mom's side.
BoxerDog2024@reddit
Prayers for you scary situation.
sunfish99@reddit
Thank you. I lost a friend to breast cancer last year, and I'm hoping not to follow the same path.
On the flip side, it sure would ease any concerns about my retirement fund/Social Security being enough to live on...!
ImMxWorld@reddit
I'm guessing about 15-20 years. I'm probably going to retire at 67, my mom is currently 80 and fairly healthy, my dad died at 78 with a 3 pack-a-day habit, so I'm expecting to live longer than him. Fingers crossed.
LizTruth@reddit
Mom made it to 93. All of the non-smokers in my family made it into their mid-to-late 90s. Cancer got the rest.
Beautiful-Page4200@reddit
Long! But I would hate to live long without: Good health Good mobility Enough money
A_Russian_Ace@reddit
idk im adopted so this should be fun im 31 😂😂😂😂
human8060@reddit
Have you done an ancestry DNA test? I ended up finding bio family and learning med histories.
A_Russian_Ace@reddit
Nah i dont really care to know its literally been 30 years since i was adopted.
human8060@reddit
I found out after my 40s. Lots of medical things fell into place after that. I didn't care so much about the bio family as I did the med history. Just something to keep in the background as an option if things ever get weird.
A_Russian_Ace@reddit
yeah i have said i would in past but never did. The medical would be useful for down theine especially knowing if cancer runs in my family. i just have never had the true motivation to find out.
human8060@reddit
I get that. I wasn't really motivated until I had a son. He started getting migraines at the exact same age I did. Turns out, it's hereditary and one of my bio parents also has them.
You can also check your adoption records. In many cases there is a medical history of the family before adoption and sometimes the biological parents will keep it updated after. That's obviously more rare but it's possible. Best of luck, fellow adoptee!
A_Russian_Ace@reddit
I was adopted from Russian in the 90s lol they wernt very good with medical records back then in Russia because its not on my adoption records. I will try and find out but im not suoer confident with the Russian Medical history record keeping. Thank you for the advice

I won’t be able to retire. I’m just gonna have to work till I die based on my parents and my grandparents though assuming I could retire at65. 20 to 25 years my mother said genetics are horribly long lived late 90s early hundreds. Dad side wasn’t a strong but they were poor. He’s just not any signs of slowing down at 85.
WingZombie@reddit
Mom and dad were 56 and 59 when they retired in 1999. Dad was former smoker and lost that battle in 2015 so he lasted 16 years post retirement. Mom is still going and has been retired for 27 years now although she doesn't have much quality of life (83 with dimensia)

My mom is almost 80 and still going strong/really active, but her parents both died before 65, I believe. Her siblings both still alive and also in fairly good health.

My parents are both in their 80s and in relatively good health. Curious what I will look like at 80 as my mom looks every bit of 80 while my dad is mistake for low 60s. My plan is to age at home. Freeflying_Dragon@reddit
There have been very few in my family on both sides that live past 75. Im good with that nobody really bothers with people over 70. Being in an assisted living home is not for me. Most elderly in those facilities are lucky if they get a visit once a week from someone.
No-Country6348@reddit
My birth father died in a motorcycle accident at 20 and my birth mom (a libertarian) died of covid in her late 60s so i would be doomed if i weren’t way healthier than the mom. My birth uncles are still alive but not any of the grandparents on either so who knows. My adoptive grandparents on one side lived until their late 90s so i am accustomed to greater longevity.
MaleficentMousse7473@reddit
First question is- when can i retire? SSA says 72, so there’s a bit of a wait!
Based on my family, i could continue on another 30-40 years, but on average another 20 or so.
Rambling-Holiday1998@reddit
My husband is a boomer and is already retired. I was a sahm so I reckon I'm retired too? I didn't get a retirement party though.
We spent the first 8 years rving. Now we live in our first apartment and I go to college (better late than never) and my husband tracks my movements all day and has my lunch ready when I get home. We are bored and we miss traveling.
We live on my husband's pension and our meager retirement savings. We live very frugally.
If I'm widowed I get half of his pension and half of his SSI (survivor benefits) for life. I'll likely move in with one of my kids. They have already been jockeying for first position when the time comes. (I prefer that my husband and I depart the earth together in some spectacular "they never knew what hit them" fashion but I'll probably just end up a widow anyway.)

I will never retire because I am disabled and already can't work a normal job. My plan is and always has been to kill myself when I run out of money. Hope that helps.

They lived until 85 and 90. They both had horrible, slow deaths though. That is definitely not how I'd prefer to go out.
dirtybo0ts@reddit
My mom was forced to retire because of a stage 4 diagnosis and died 5 years later, never really enjoying her retirement.
My dad spent what little of his retirement he had (10 years) depressed from losing his wife, then having knee replacement surgery and then stage 4 colon cancer and dead within 3 years of diagnosis.
At this point, enjoying any retirement time without cancer is all I’m asking for. Don’t care how long it is. I just want to enjoy it.

I’m fucked. My family lives into their 100’s (even 3 generations back when this was unheard of) and there’s NO way I’ll be able to retire at 65 and have enough money to live another 30 years.
My parents are still going pretty strong in their 80’s. My health is shit compared to them so I’m doomed.

Both my folk's had cancer at age 76. Dad passed quickly. Mom is still going strong at age 88. However, I've lived with her since the cancer, and she has been close to passing at least half a dozen times. Most of which were caught by me noticing significant changes. I'm single and childless, so not as likely to have someone that close to me. So I'm guessing my expiration date is somewhere between 75 and 80.
Historical_Project86@reddit
Depends when I retire. I don't think I will, not until I physically can't work. The job I'll be doing will change dramatically and that may happen sooner than I'd like. Judging by the current job market, I'll be taking a 30-40% pay cut for still doing a shitty desk job unless providence smiles on me. I think a lot of people will become semi-retired but still need some income. Depending on what type of person you are, that may actually lengthen your life. My father doesn't need that. He retired at 50 and hasn't stopped since, he is very active and that has kept him strong and relatively healthy. Other people may decline quickly after retirement. I'm 56 and haven't noticed any signs or old age, symptoms of health issues, or anything like that, yet, so I'm saying I'll make it to 85 (dad is 83).
LGeorgeRox@reddit

Mum is 86 and in fantastic physical shape from a lifetime of looking after herself well. Dad's 88 and only just starting to slow down - he had a hip replacement 12 years ago, and it's reaching the end of its operational life.
I'm a lifelong fitness fanatic, and at 59, I'm still rowing competitively & working out daily, so I'm fairly confident about reaching my 90s
UrsaMajor7th@reddit
6-7 years maybe, if I'm lucky. My parents aren't the ones to base longevity on- it's their genetic combination within my siblings and I that are the window to my future.
None of my siblings made it to 70 y/o, and one didn't hit 60. We are a family riddled with genetic comorbidities that almost guarantee an early exit. There is no future; I'm enjoying the time I have right now.

Hey OP. 49 year old married father of two in the UK.
My parents are still very much alive*, so I’ll have to go on grandparent’s lifespans - the youngest any of them died was mid 80s - the other three died late 90s or in one case at 102.
Genetically, I’m probably going to live a very long life… but will that be what I want when I get to 90…? Swings and roundabouts.
(* Dad has Parkinson’s, but physically his body is strong… frustrating, but that wasn’t your question)

My mother's side of the family have all lived into their 80s at least. She died in an accident at 71. My father's side barely reached 50, although he and his sister were both in their 70s. So I don't know. I have 6 years before I can retire. I might be lucky and have 10 years.

I will never get to retire. Parents are 68 and 78.. both in need of help. Im pushing 50 and have zero retirement, neither one of them will be able to leave me anything. I have no children and my family is scattered across the world and we arent close.
So on a good note I still have about 20 years or so at least (according to genetics). Bad part is those 20 years look a bit bleak with no happy ending anywhere in sight.
bawkward@reddit
I feel this so much. Worst part is, one side of the family lives to be 100+. Both of my parents are in their 80s now which, you know, good for them, but it's terrifying to me that I might live that long with no way to support myself.

Well, let’s see… if I live the same number of days as my dad, who died suddenly in his early 70s, I will keel over on Oct 5, 2042. That’s 16 1/2 years from now. Assuming my kids go to college and I am working until they are done, I’ll have about 6 years to enjoy retirement.
On the other hand, his dad lived into his 90s, my mom is 86 and alive (but has aged a lot the past couple of years), and her mom lived into her 90s.
My paternal grandmother died at 79 but didn’t have to, she had a mismanaged medical condition. My maternal grandfather died in his 60s but led a very unhealthy lifestyle.
So maybe I’ll get a longer rest before the final rest.

I’m 60, still skating and going to gigs when I can. With an 18 year old in their senior year of high school, I’ll probably work till I’m 69 and looking forward to at least 15 fruitful years after retirement.
SprinklesWilling470@reddit
Mine is less about health and more about resources. Two to three years is realistic for me. Grandparents' lifespans are all over the map...55, 65, 83 and 94. My mother is in decent health at 75. Dad I don't know, as we are estranged. I only know that he is still living at 77. I currently care for my chronically ill and disabled wife. I am 57, she is 63. She fell out of the workforce 15 years ago due to health issues, so her retirement savings are virtually non-existent. She will be fortunate to live another 3-5 years. If I make it and retire between 62 and 67, I will still have to work part-time just to make the most basic ends meet. That's if the economy doesn't completely collapse between now and then. Not sure that's a reality I look forward to. Just being real, not doom and gloom.

My dad died long before retirement. I’m a good bit past the age at which he passed. My mom is in her early 80s and dying of cancer. I don’t really expect to live long enough to retire, especially as my circumstances make me think I wont retire till 70.

marge7777@reddit
Based on my parents, 30-35 years. Mom just passed at 86, dad’s almost 88. My plan is to retire at 55 (this year). I am enjoying my current job, however, so I may stay to summer ‘28.
What to do is a real question. I would love to buy a small property and have a retirement home for old yorkies who need a space. Read all the books I have on my list, write the horror movie screenplay I have always wanted to.

Not sure I want to retire. I gotta keep busy and I travel all over for my job. My kids are grown and my parents are 89 and 90. Still married all these years and independent. As morbid as it sounds I’m not so sure I want to live to be that age. I have the humor of a 12 year old, my heart is still in my late teens and early 20’s but my body feels like I’ve been hit by a steam roller. So I can’t imagine what it will feel like in another 20 years yet alone at 90. Also watching everyone and everything you knew go away and pass away sucks. I’m already slowly experiencing this. As my parents have done for me I as well want to make sure my children are set when I pass so I’m not a burden in death.
JumpReasonable6324@reddit

I feel the same way. We have access to medically assisted death where I live, so I probably won’t put myself through any long, painful illnesses. My mom took early retirement from her teaching career because her hips were going bad and her doctor overprescribed opioids which destroyed her liver. She died at the age of 64. But he his still here at 60. So I do look at him and think whenever he dies, it will be a slight indicator on when I might die.
I haven't had any heart attacks, and I only started a small dose high blood pressure med this year. Assuming i retire at 65, the current life expectancy for someone who is a 65 year old man is 82. I think I will live at least 15 to 20 years after I retire.

If I have to base it on my parents then I won't make it to retirement. My Dad died at 58 from lung cancer and my Mom died from liver cancer at 65. 🤷
Careless-Gazelle-247@reddit
My parents are 82 and 80 this year. Based on my 401k and the fact that I didn't think I'd be alive after 40, my retirement plan is either dying at work or in the oligarch wars.
Revolutionary-Dark52@reddit
35 years, at least. Retired at 60, both parents still going strong - mom is 86 and dad is 89. My grandmothers lived to 95 and 97 respectively, and my great grandmother also lived to 97. I'm also female, so the stats are in my favor as well as genetics.
Malady1607@reddit
My mom was an outlier and lived only about 10 years. My aunt retired partially because her dept was cousin, but also to take care of my uncle and is still alive at 90., so maybe 35 years?
My dad died at 82, so maybe 15?
d4sbwitu@reddit
My parents lived to their early 80s, but they were healthier than me. I plan to live about 15 years after retirement.

Based on history for the women in my family, cancer or dementia will get me before I hit 70.
I get all my screenings on schedule and have already caught three precancerous lesions (skin, colon, cervix) but not much I can do about dementia. I just retired at 60 because I’ll be damned if I’m going to work until I’m dead.
On the other hand my dad is still going strong at 84. I have been saving for retirement since my first day of work 40 years ago, so I am set until age 99 if it goes that way.

Well, my mother died in her 70s from a stroke. Dad is 83 this year, has had multiple bypass and now has a pacemaker and is still going.
However, most of the people on his side of the family died late 60s early 70s from CHF. On my mom’s side, I only know her mother and aunt, and they both died from Alzheimer’s in their 70s.
All in all, with my luck, I’ll be mid 90s and sharp as a tack
kapshus@reddit
I'm in the Methusalah wing of the gene pool. Three of my 4 gparents passed 90. The one who didn't had Alzheimers which landed him in a locked ward or he'd have stayed active enough for 80+ as well.
I figure I better plan for a 40 year retirement to be safe.

I’m 52, sister is 60.
Our mother is 79 and father is 81 and they are in good health. They are good about visiting the doctor and have the means to live on their own.
I’m planning on retiring when I turn 56. I have $1.2 million saved so far, so I need a bit more because of crazy expensive medical premiums.
I hope to do a little travel, and spend quality time with my lovely spouse.
Life-Wealth-3399@reddit
Well based on my parents, I will still be working when I die. My father was 60 and mother was 63.
jaxbravesfan@reddit
Both my parents are turning 75 this year. My mom’s side of the family historically live into their mid-90s, and my mom is fit and healthy. My dad’s side of the family tend to make it to around 80. Diabetes runs rampant on that side of the family, plus the majority didn’t exactly live the healthiest lifestyle, with a lot of alcoholism, drug use, etc. I’m hoping my dad, who has the family curse of diabetes, but none of the alcohol or drug use, makes it longer than average. I strongly take after my dad’s side, so I also have diabetes, though it’s always been well-controlled, and I rarely drink and don’t do drugs. So maybe I’ll make it past the 80 years old mark, but definitely not into the 90s like my mom’s side does. If things go as planned with no major financial crisis or setback between now and then, I’m hoping to retire at 63, which would hopefully get me at least 15 years to enjoy retirement.
TampaRN@reddit
Dad died at 53, Mum still alive and thriving at 100. I’m splitting the difference and adding 10 years, so, planning for 86(ish).

You’re not gonna like it. Spent a few months relaxing, working on home projects, riding the e-bike around, hanging with the dogs. My wife still has a business going so I got bored. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be able to retire.
In my family you either die when you hit 50, or you live to be 100. My mother passed from a heart attack in 2008 at 51, I couldn’t tell you about my father since he went out to buy a pack of smokes when I was 2 and we never saw him again. My grandmother on the other hand is turning 102 next week, but my grandfather died from bowel cancer at 50. I have one aunt who just turned 98 and one who passed from a brain aneurysm at 52. I’m turning 50 in a couple of years, so I guess we’ll see.

My parents died in their 60s. They both smoked, and I never have. I hope to emulate my grandparents instead. One lived into her 90s, two others into their 80s. The fourth died when my dad was a small child. I think I'm already past that age.

Family history is all over the place and have current medical issues already so will start with may not make it to retirement or a short one. Dad's father heart attack in early 60's (I already have stents, he was undiagnosed), but Dad's mom lived in to mid 90's. My mom passed from cancer mid 70's, but Dad is still going at 85 even with multiple medical issues. It's a crap shoot, be ready for any time.

Probably my 80s, but honestly, my husband ‘s family is loooong lived. Everyone in his dad’s side makes it to 100. It would be kind of good for him, I think, if he’s widowed earlier and finds a good match for the long haul.
I promise I’m not suicidal. I’m just burned out by my issues and don’t want to be the disabled one who drags him down. He would be horrified to hear this, btw.

blackpony04@reddit
My dad made it 36 hours.
But while my mom hasn't worked since 1959, if we figure that she did and retired at 62, she's made it nearly 32 years since then. And at almost 94 she's an excellent candidate to surpass 100 based on her health.
So somewhere between 36 hours and 32+ years.

The first question is speculative at best. However my answer to question two is an adamant "mathematics and yarn-bombs" at least until the inevitable dementia brought on by smoking seeds and stems out aluminum foil. Then it will just be "yarn bombs" at least until I lose all manual dexterity. At that point I'll probably be crouched in the corner muttering incoherently about prime numbers with a penchant for shredding newspapers like a drooling rodent.

I’m figuring about 85. My mom died at 61 from cancer, but I’m 60 and no sign of anything. My dad died at 92, from complications from pneumonia. I’ve been destroying my body since I was eleven in the trades, smoked for thirty years, drank heavily in my youth, have serious spinal problems, stage 2 kidney and liver disease, a heart murmur (father had as well) bradycardia. Otherwise I’m still in pretty good shape and try to take care of myself. So I figured I would split the difference. Since I’m more like my father and his mom lived to 109.

Plan on semi-retirement at 58-60, I’m 53 next month. Self employed in an industry where I can work just enough to keep busy and make good money.
