Well, it happened

So I had to get my hair cut, and the “stylist” looked to be mid-20’s. She finishes up, all good, then she tells me what I owe, and it was actually less than I expected. Well whatever, cool, so I added half the difference to her tip.
As I’m looking up at the services “menu” I realized what happened. She gave me the “**senior discount.**”
Gaaa, I’m 55 not 65!
OK, in her defense, I’ve been dieting the last couple years, and actually losing weight. I’ve noticed in the mirror how my old quadruple chin has transformed into a turkey neck.
Sigh, aging sucks, and is only better than the alternative.
Traditional_Fan_2655@reddit
I uust realized I've been saying I'm a year older than I am for an entire year before I was. I completely lost a year! Give it back!
Pixup@reddit
I recently figured out that I was doing the same thing for the past seven months. What scares me is, what's going on in my brain that allowed this to happen?
iaman1llusion@reddit
It’s not just you so you’re not alone! I genuinely have no idea why I thought I was older.. I just did!
GmaDoo2@reddit
Menopause? I thought I had a brain tumor or something but no, “just” low estrogen. Ffs.
iaman1llusion@reddit
I did that last year. Didn’t realize until my next birthday that I was turning the age I thought I already was 🤣
fencepostsquirrel@reddit
I did that, when I was 52 I kept thinking I was 53….Now that I’m 53 I think I should reclaim 52!
zpqmfg@reddit
You think that's bad? I thought for almost a year that I was a year younger. On my birthday, I aged two years when someone pointed out my mistake.
Middle_Raspberry2499@reddit
You saved money. What’s the downside?
MrsDottieParker@reddit
Being eligible for discounts and special services, like Medicare, retirement community housing, meals on wheels, etc. is the BEST thing about aging. I never understood why my parents generation resented it so much.
crager34@reddit
Senior sometimes start at 55. Senior Citizen start at 65.
Practical_Ad_9756@reddit
AARP will mail your first recruiting packet to arrive on your 55th birthday. It’s uncanny.
Alternative_Sort_404@reddit
Started when I turned 50… fuck then for pushing the envelope
THC_Dude_Abides@reddit
No that’s starts at 50. I didn’t think discounts began until 55 so I figured I’d save the membership fees until then.
mayura376@reddit
I’ve had an AARP discount courtesy of my older husband for quite a few years. This year I’m officially able to qualify myself.
kirabug37@reddit
I got my first packet when my dad turned 55. I was 25.
Las_Vegan@reddit
I got mine at 35 and I was kind of outraged lol
I don’t know their marketing strategy but you can sign up to become a member as early as 18 years of age. You don’t need to wait to become an actual retired person.
Melubrot@reddit
My wife and I both got ours right before we turned 50. I vaguely remember the offer promising some sort of lame AARP-branded gift, like a tote bag or weekly planner notebook if we signed up.
Travelchick8@reddit
I started getting them at 50.
cghipp@reddit
I got one at 48 or 49. I've been getting their stuff for years and I'm still not 55!
Pye-@reddit
55 is old enough to get most senior discounts - I'm leaning into it now!!! Give me something cheaper 😄
GmaDoo2@reddit
Yep, 55 here and had it rubbed in my face when I was given an unasked for senior discount. Apparently I AM old enough.
Iamshortestone@reddit
Well 55 is the age normally to qualify for a "senior" discount at most establishments. The fact that she just guessed though is a sting for sure.
Alternative_Sort_404@reddit
I suppose it should be a compliment, but when a cashier takes my ID and says - ‘Oh - you don’t look THAT old’… I just fake smile, say thanks and pretend I still don’t want to wring their neck, lol. (Time - it’s coming for you too, kiddo…)
solar-shock@reddit
I was quite happy to get a discount a couple weeks back, but the sign clearly said 55 and older.
skinnyorangecat@reddit
Give me alllll the discounts!!
FabAmy@reddit
Own the discount!
OGAF_Gamer@reddit
I don't know why everyone is complaining. I cannot wait to start getting all my 55plus discounts next year... Bring it on!💲
DuchessOfLansdale@reddit
I hear they’re raising the age requirement to 60. Sorry!
🤣
OGAF_Gamer@reddit
That would be my luck 😂
The_Wild_Bunch@reddit
I'll be 60 this summer and no one mistakes me for being a senior. It's good, except I don't her the discounts like y'all do.
bluedonutwsprinkles@reddit
57F same problem for me. Husband is younger at 54 and looks 70 because of his full head of white hair. He gets offered the discounts not me.
Except 2 instances. 8 or 9 years ago, we are traveling with a group that are all seniors. My husband is their driver. I'm the last in line at the fast food place we stopped at. He comes up to give me his order and then goes back out. The cashier gives me the discount without either of us asking. No one else was given it.
The more recent time, I was at a thrift store on senior day. Cashier asked if I wanted it. I remember I'm eligible and said yes. She apparently was not looking at me when she asked because after I said yes, I could tell she didn't believe I was.
I've been back on senior day and not offered it. I didn't ask. Probably because I don't want the side eye.
No-Leg-3298@reddit
I’ve noticed that being over 55 people have a hard time guessing ages. I’ve met friends who are clearly 10 years older than me and they think I’m their age. It was worse before I dyed my hair. Although, people 10 years younger than me seem to guess pretty close. Weird
Upbeat-Loss-1382@reddit
I am 57 now. I don't know why, but to me that seemed to send me from the mid-50's to my late-50's in my head! Why does it seem so much older? I feel so close to 60 all of a sudden.
No-Leg-3298@reddit
Me too.
BuckyD1000@reddit
The weed dispensary I frequent calls their senior discount the "wisdom discount."
The first time the counter kid asked me sheepishly if I wanted to apply the wisdom discount, I told her they could call it the "useless old broke-dick, gray-haired, sore-knee, charity case" discount and I'll happily take it if it means cheaper weed.
THC_Dude_Abides@reddit
How old do you need to be to get the wisdom discount?
Jmckeown2@reddit (OP)
So yea, wisdom
Street_Sand_8788@reddit
That sounds like one of the dispensaries that I go to!😂😂😂
thomascameron@reddit
You know what? We've been shit on for our WHOLE lives. Nobody gives a shit about GenX. They never have. Our Boomer parents had to be reminded that we were even alive ("It's 10:00. Do you know where your kids are?").
Our kids don't give a single shit about us. They're too busy glued to their fucking phones to want to spend any time with us.
We don't even get included in generational discussions. How many times have we seen articles jump from silent generation to boomers to millennials to GenZ in news articles?
I joined AARP a couple of years ago and I take advantage of that shit every chance I can. No one has ever done jack shit for our generation, so if I can get some shitty discount because I hit 55 a couple of years ago, fine. I'll take it.
bam_rare1972@reddit
Maybe your Boomer parents should have been turned into CPS! I knew where my kids were. Shouldn’t generalize quite so much ☺️
Sweaty_Sleep_3405@reddit
As a Scottish woman, a discount is a discount. I'd be going back.
Both-Mango1@reddit

I lost about 25 pounds since 2020 so very gradual and I noticed how when I’m thinner I look older then when I’m younger 🤣
DuchessOfLansdale@reddit
I think most people look older when they lose weight 🤷🏻♀️
Damien__@reddit
I am 59 and my last 2 cuts have been 'senior' I have also lost weight and have turkey neck, or maybe I should call it ozempic neck.
Jmckeown2@reddit (OP)
Wegovy neck here. The shit is miraculous.
goingloopy@reddit
Mounjaro. The last time I weighed this was in 7th grade.
Jmckeown2@reddit (OP)
Yea, I started getting overweight about 3rd grade. I’m now just under 200, but don’t remember exactly when I crossed the 200 boundary, but it was middle school, if not earlier.
goingloopy@reddit
Are you me? Lol. I really gained weight in high school and college. 8th grade was 200. I told my doctor my goal weight was 199. I’m actually around 170 now, have been for about a year. I think my BMI is 24.9 (BMI is bogus, it was used for statistics…it was never supposed to be a diagnostic test. Also, the WHO or whoever is in charge of this bullshit changed “overweight” from 30 to 25 in the late 80s. Presto! More fat people for insurance companies to penalize!).
A more recent study said that in older people, the mortality rate from surgeries or severe illness is the lowest in the 25-29 bmi group. I actually don’t really care about my BMI. It’s just interesting to read about its intended uses.
I don’t have kids, but I really hope they have stopped the public weighing in PE class. That was traumatic AF as a kid.
Jmckeown2@reddit (OP)
I "held the line" around 240 through High School and College, but Marrage, Kids, & Job brought on a lot of stress eating. By mid-pandemic I peaked at a whopping 365, and knew I had to get serious, One Dr even said, "Gastric Bypass or Die," but I'm not willingly going under that knife. (At least not without trying the shot.) When I started out I was really just hoping to get back under 300. I'm currently solidly in the middle of that 25-29 BMI, so thanks for that info. Like I said, miraculous.
Damien__@reddit
It really is. Saves me a ton on groceries, my copay for three months is about 10% what I would have been spending on junk food and regular food. It's been 30 years since I was this weighed in this low.
ChavoDemierda@reddit
I haven't gotten the treatment yet, but it's comin. I'm finally starting to look my age! Being a baby face has always sucked.
girlpaint@reddit
I thought having a baby face sucked when I was younger but now at 55 I really appreciate what's left of it.
Naive-Garlic2021@reddit
Didn't everyone always tell us that someday we'd appreciate our baby faces? 😄
Good_Grief_CB@reddit
I get pissed because every time I think I’m old enough for a senior discount, the bastards raise the age limit up. It’s like when I turned 18 and they raised the drinking age all over again. Like WTF?
Brilliant_Test_3045@reddit
Same. When I moved to my current state, I was 11. Drinking age was 18. A few years later, it changed to 21.
Jmckeown2@reddit (OP)
I still think the drinking age should be 16 and the driving age should be 21. If you could legally drink for a few years before college the parties would have been a lot more social, and a lot less cringey-bingey. More focus on getting in pants, less vomiting, and “heeeey check thiss sshhhit out!” I definitely could have done with more sex, and fewer UPI’s (Unidentified Party Injuries)
Also a lot of 16 year olds are still wannabe race car drivers.
MusicUpbeat2510@reddit
l call that a win! More money for retirement! 🤣
MarcusAurelius68@reddit
Retirement? What’s that.
Vness374@reddit
Death?
Kcatlady@reddit
I think getting the discount is great. Yay, more money for me!
OhMaiMai@reddit
Wtf, GenX- you guys all lost your grooves and sound all sensitive about how you look.
Remember when we tried to buy beer/ wine coolers or sneak into bars before we were 21? We are at a time where we can do it all again.
We look old to these kids- it’s not personal or anything about you or how well or poorly you aged.. it’s about how young people don’t know shit.
At 40 I started requesting senior discounts- because teenagers and 20 somethings all think everyone over 30 may as well be 50, may as well be 70. They have no life experience and don’t much know 40 from 65.
And what are we going to do if they ask for ID? We apologize, say we left our wallet at home, then do some quick math and give a fake birth date and a mathematically correct fake age. The effort of doing some math can make them back down.
And if they say no, we just try again next time. Just like when we were kids.

Hey my friend who is ten years younger than me (Xennial!) was bald from chemo and I went with her and her husband to a doctor visit. The doctor mistook her husband for her son. I died a little at that moment. She is cancer free for nearly ten years now btw and she looks like his wife not his mom
MeowMeowCollyer@reddit
I was mistaken as my husband’s mother by the intake desk at the hospital where he was getting his gall bladder removed. The kid behind the desk asked him if his [looking at me] mother would be driving him home. My husband sternly said “no, try again” and the desk twerp had the audacity to double down and correct himself with, “your…[looking me up and down]…friend?”
Im four years older than my hubs and the whole thing was fucking humiliating.
Brilliant_Test_3045@reddit
My husband’s ex-wife was always mistaken as his mother, and she was two years younger than him. I am 6.5 years older than him, and no one has ever mistaken me as his mother. 😂
crossstitchbeotch@reddit
I am 48 and my hair is mostly white. Someone who has a kid in my son’s class asked if I was another parent’s mother. It was embarrassing and I tried to play it off. I thought that gray/silver hair was in right now. She is hispanic and has dark hair. I think she isn’t used to people with premature gray.
TuneAdministrative93@reddit
I got AARP mailings when I turned 50. I did look up senior discounts but they don’t apply to me just yet.
But I am 50 with a 7 year old (definitely the oldest mom in her class) plus I use a cane (thanks MS) so I’m waiting for the grandma mistake.
100percentEV@reddit
I am a foster parent and my youngest is 7. I am constantly asked if I am her grandmother. Granted, at 53 I very well could be.

How about this:
When I got married I was almost 30 and spouse was 28.
I had been going bald for several years and she had inherited grey hairs coming in.
One time at a store someone said that we had "Cute grandkids".
pantheroux@reddit
I’m an xennial. I have no delusions about looking like a teenager, but most people assume I’m in my mid 30s (about 10 years younger than my actual age) until I remind them that I would have had to start my (multiple degree requiring) job in high school if that was the case.
If I go to the liquor store by myself, I often get carded. If I go with my similar aged husband (bald since his 20s with some grey creeping into his stubble), I don’t get carded.
We recently went to the Bulk Barn and the cashier (early 20s) offered us tickets to a fair coming up, with rides, entertainment and a bouncy castle. My husband jokingly told her that we’re a bit too old for bouncy castles. She replied with “maybe you guys have grandkids who’d enjoy it?”
We nearly cried.
Jumpy_Cobbler7783@reddit
What may have been another contributing factor is that we always made sure that our lads were smartly dressed and respectable looking and some people assumed that only doting grandparents would dress boys this way:

Uriarte69@reddit
It just started showing up on my receipt when I turned 50. I always do self checkout, so I'm sure you have to have a rewards account with your birthday in your profile. I even looked it up when it started happening and saw their T&Cs says it's 55. I was going to bring it to their attention, but it's really depressing enough, so I may as well take advantage.

I usually share these videos. This time, I did not, and I untagged myself when others shared. I’m thinking it might’ve just been harsh lighting, but it’s probably time to pass the torch to someone else for these videos.

My grandma once asked my age while we were waiting for the bus, and I told her I was 7. She told me I was wrong. “When you ride the bus, you are 5. Kids under 6 ride free. You’re tall for your age, but very small. You have another good year of being 5”.
I applied the same logic to the arcade, where kids under 12 needed adult accompaniment. I was tall for my age, and more articulate than most adults. At the arcade, I was 12.
I’m an xennial in my 40s. Still get carded sometimes, and never been offered a senior discount. When it inevitably happens, I hope I have the grace to apply my grandma’s wisdom.

There’s a reason why I learned to cut my own hair at home ages ago. Most hairdressers don’t have a clue how to cut my ultra fine naturally curly hair. I only found one in my 50 years and she knew how to cut it because she had the exact same type of hair.
Open_Confidence_9349@reddit
I must ask, my hair isn’t curly yet, but it gets curlier every year (used to be straight). It still has extra fine strands. Is your hair dry (mine used to be so oily) and does it frizz up? If so, what products do you use? I have no idea what to do with this hair that is no longer the hair I had all my life and I haven’t found any answers yet. Almost everyone that has wavy to curly hair has thicker strands.
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
I only had oily hair after I got out of the hospital after having spinal surgery when I was 13 because I couldn’t stand long enough to wash and rinse my hair thoroughly. My hair (once it came in because I was born bald it was strawberry blonde and slightly curly. It got curlier every year until I was in my mid twenties and it’s just as curly now as it was then. My hair may be ultra fine but I also have a LOT of it because my dad had thick hair
Open_Confidence_9349@reddit
I was born with a full head of black hair that fell out and came back red, which turned to strawberry blond and then around 6 started getting some brown in it. Currently, it’s medium to dark brown with gray and red in it with the occasional white, silver, or blond strands just to keep things exciting. Super fine, stick straight, and thick until I had my son when it finally got some body to it. It would never hold a perm and was always so greasy/oily. During puberty I had to wash my hair at least twice a day to cut the oil.
Now I wash my hair 2-3 times a week, mainly to slather more conditioner on it. It’s not as thick and it goes between waves and ringlets depending on whether or not I slept on it while it was still damp. It’s so different, that I’m really lost as to how to care for it.
Candleforce-9728@reddit
Some of the old products work great. John Frieda leave in conditioner, Frizz-ease to put on dry hair.
Open_Confidence_9349@reddit
Thank you, I will try them next. My hair is driving me crazy.

About a year ago, I was standing in front of the copier at work, looking at the buttons before copying. An early 20 something office girl walks up and wants to assist me. I let her only because I was in shock. I’m not so old I can’t figure out the green button. I run million dollar equipment for crying out loud. Yes, yes, my beard is mostly grey but I’ve been around since rotary phones and VCR’s were a thing. I took it nicely but c’mon, gimme a little credit.
Anyway, my rant for the day.

I went in to get a haircut a few years ago and when I was finished and paying out, this familiar old song comes through the stereo system. I asked the young-ish receptionist, “is this the Psychedelic Furs?”
She said “let me check.” And she pulled up the playlist on the computer and said, “yes, it is the Psychedelic Furs.”
And the way she said it. . . So I asked, “You’ve never heard of them, have you?”
She answered, “Nope.”
And I just turned and left, feeling very old.
