I received a creepy call -- am I (50m) now gullible senior scammer target?
Posted by nojam75@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 158 comments
I received a call from a stranger claiming to be a contractor in my neighborhood. He wanted to know if I needed any work done on our house. I politely declined, but was creeped out considering he someone got my name, telephone number, and address.
Am I (50m) now at that age where scammers think, 'that lonely old man probably needs someone to change a lightbulb for $100'?
supershinythings@reddit
I’ve been called with scammers who even knew the last 4 digits of my social and wanted to “confirm” the rest.
Uh huh.
A LOT of data is out there. They called looking for my MOTHER - who sold the house in 1997. They’ve called looking for my mother’s husband, who has never lived here and married her decades after my parents divorced.
Quite often they have partial and incomplete data but before they can work their scams they need YOU to fill in a few missing links.
I got called by a fake police department claiming a stranger linked to me by a bad credit record entry (that I fixed over a year ago) was in jail and wanted to know my “relationship” to the “accused. I’m pretty sure I would have been setup for a scam if I had filled in any blanks on that one.
So don’t be surprised that they know all kinds of things and are just looking to “confirm” info - so they can steal your identity. SO MUCH info is now public it’s impossible to believe someone who just calls on the phone.
hapster85@reddit
Unless I'm expecting a call from someone whose number I don't have, I don't answer calls from unknown numbers. If Google doesn't auto-screen the call, then I do a manual one. It's very rare that it gets any further, like someone actually responding to the prompt.
EnjoyingTheRide-0606@reddit
There may be more information about you available online than you know about yourself! And it’s not all accurate. I say my husband isn’t home and I don’t know what we need done. I don’t have a husband. I’ve also said I’m the nanny even though no children reside at my home!
ExtraAd7611@reddit
If you give them a reason to call back, they will call back. Why not just say directly that you are very not interested and tell them to stop calling?
Better yet, why pick it up at all? 99% of my calls are from spammers so I don't answer if I don't recognize the caller id.
EnjoyingTheRide-0606@reddit
I’m referring to walk up and knock sales people.
ExtraAd7611@reddit
We have a sign saying no solicitors. When it is ignored, as it summarily is, I try to waste as much of the offender's time as possible encouraging them to enter a literacy program.
Stompboxer1@reddit
Well, join the club here - I get spam calls ad nauseum.
LaVida2@reddit
You still answer your phone?
Bk_Punisher@reddit
The rule is Don’t answer from unknown callers. If it’s important they will leave a message. Been doing this for more than 15 yrs
FlaxenAssassin@reddit
This! And, I don’t answer the door just because someone knocks on it. It blows my mind that people still do in this day and age.
Bk_Punisher@reddit
My ring doorbell saved me from opening the door to evangelists. Could have been stuck there for who knows how long.
Duke-of-Glenmont@reddit
Oh no, I have a blast with them, try to get them to send ME money. Ask them what kind of underwear they’re wearing. All kinds of fun.
JuJu_Wirehead@reddit
Your number pops up and I don't know you. I'm not answering.
PuzzleheadedWeird402@reddit
One way to avoid those calls is to screen them. If I don’t recognize the number, I let the call go to voicemail. If someone really needs me, they’ll leave a message. And if there is a message like what you were given, I delete it and block the number.
Any_Meeting_4082@reddit
This! Been doing that for probably 15-20 years now! Great way to screen calls via who leave a voucemail & what that message is. Any scam messages get deleted and whatever number left that message gets blocked.
Same with texts. Any and all scam texts get blocked, reported as scam & deleted.
Landline got disconnected about 10-15?? years ago? So that cut down on the audible "phone ringing" too. Plus those scammers who had that number!
Shell-Fire@reddit
WTH?? Stop answering the GD phone. Moron.
Justasadgrandma@reddit
That's pretty harsh. Sounds like you've been scammed. Live and learn.
Correct-Condition-99@reddit
You're only gullible if you answer calls from strange numbers.
pogulup@reddit
We have to understand that our data is flying around behind the scenes and is for sale to anyone willing to pay. Your Amazon purchase history. Your car is feeding data back to the manufacturer. What you watch on TV or streaming services is being recorded and sold. Your phone is feeding information to Apple or Google or your provider on the apps you use, your location, who you call and text. Yor ISP is watching your DNS requests and knows where you go online.Social media companies know what you watch and like. DOGE stole all your federal information from the government. It is completely unregulated in the US and all available to someone who wants to pay.
gingerthetrailpup@reddit
I have set my phone to only allow calls thru that are in my phone book.
Otherwise you go straight to VM.
On my VM it is just a click. No message from me. Not even an automated message.
Weeds out scammers.
NYC-WhWmn-ov50@reddit
They dont know if you're old and dumb. But they'll take a chance to see if you are. Just dont be, and you'll be fine. I'm scam-savvy from 30 years in finance where we train on scams old, new, and hypothetical all year round. I still get easily 50 calls a week from 'loan agents' trying to con me. I never answer and spend an hour evrry Saturday reporting the calls, but I'm on selling lists and probably can never get off without changing my number- and even then! and scammers gonna scam, baby. Just be smart about unidentified caller and any cold calls. You can do it!
Oldebookworm@reddit
Yeah, what the hell is it with “loan agents”?
CK_CoffeeCat@reddit
Absolutely a scam.
FrankParkerNSA@reddit
I stopped answering my cell unless I have the number saved. They will leave a message if they really want to get ahold of me.
jthmniljt@reddit
Ditto. Then I block and delete the number.
sidewaysbynine@reddit
I am self employed and I do the same, despite the possibility it might be a new customer. If they don't leave a message, it wasn't meant to be. Still get 8-10 spam calls a week, but it goes to voicemail.
Top-Nose2659@reddit
Unless the phone call comes up as someone in my contacts, I never answer it
freerangeXkid@reddit
I have to be in a fantastic mood to even answer calls from my contacts. I literally pick up maybe a half dozen calls in a full year
pitathegreat@reddit
I have a rule with my brother - if it’s an emergency, call twice. Otherwise it all goes to voicemail.
freerangeXkid@reddit
Exactly. Or just text and end the message with 911 if you need a callback, like when we had pagers
Top_Management7550@reddit
Due to my c I had to get on my mom's phone plan. The good thing is that it's only $5 a month to add me. The bad thing is I keep getting these AI calls. A lot of them. More than I ever got with my original phone carrier. Some will ask me if I'm there, wanting me to say yes. I've heard that if you say yes, it will be recorded and the scammers can use that recording against you.
notguiltybrewing@reddit
They certainly look at you as a target. But I will point out that in the old days, all the same information, your name, address and phone number, would have typically been in the white pages. And this wasn't necessarily a scam either. Contractors trying to drum up business, especially near where they are working isn't unusual or a new strategy on their part. I'm not saying they were legit, just that it's possible based on what information you provided.
TwilightTink@reddit
My parents would get so many spam calls when they still had a landline. I had to explain to them that the IRS wouldn't be telling them to get gift cards from CVS
KilroySmithson@reddit
I send a big throbbing dick pic if a scammer texts me. It stops them dead in their tracks every time.
For phone callers, I make up something to make them feel bad. A family member died. My house burnt down. Etc.

BabadookOfEarl@reddit
You signed up for something and you’re on a list. That data was sold. This company bought it. Your age may be in the list but probably not.
Cinisajoy2@reddit
They don't know your age. They target everyone. Also if it is a landline, that is in a phone book.
ganjsmokr@reddit
Ok, I don't know if this really worked, but my spam calls have gone to almost 0 after doing this for over a year....
For unknown callers, answer and immediately hang up. If it's a real person that actually wants to talk to you, they'll assume it's a phone call drop and call you back. If it's a scammer/robocall they won't call back. You also haven't confirmed a live phone line by saying hello or letting it go to voice mail.
Again, I'm not sure if this method is why my spam calls have dropped so much, but it makes sense to me.
CanadianExiled@reddit
I was expecting a call from the dealership so I answered any time the phone rang, got a scam caller telling me there was something wrong with my taxes and of I don't e-transfer them funds immediately the police will come get me. I laughed and yelled "send them! The pigs know where I live!" And hung up... Made me miss having a real phone you can slam down.
NYC-WhWmn-ov50@reddit
Young folks today will NEVER know the satisfaction.
UseACoasterJeez@reddit
My landline gets picked up by the fax machine after two rings. Some robocall systems actually put it through to a human.
Turdulator@reddit
This kind of call is pretty common, and likely wasn’t even a scam - other than maybe the contractor is shitty. This “I’m already gonna be working in your neighborhood so I’ll give you a deal” spiel is a very common sales tactic by various home contractors.
Your name, phone number, and address are publicly available for a small fee from a ton of different data aggregators. These types of services are usually advertised as “lead generators” for sales orgs.
All that being said, I don’t recommend buying a products or services from cold callers for any reason… even if they were real, if they were good then they wouldn’t need to cold call.

The better question is how did you make it to 50 and NOT get one of these calls?
nojam75@reddit (OP)
Of course I've gotten spam/scammer calls, but this is the first 'do you need help around your house, old man' calls.
Desertwrek@reddit
Maybe it's cause I live close to the border but I've gotten calls like that for years. Calls about 'relatives' in Mexico that need help or have been arrested, offers for handywork or cleaning supplies, etc.
Glabrous@reddit
I can’t recall the last time I answered a call from an unknown number.
Sa7aSa7a@reddit
I work in a call center for Spectrum, and not that seniors aren't targeted, but the people who fall for scams more are the younger folks. Older people grew up on "if it's too good to be true..." that I guess younger people never learned.
Educational-Ad608@reddit
I think they’re just cold calls. Not necessarily a scam.
nojam75@reddit (OP)
I actually was willing to give him the benefit of doubt as there is a neighbor nearby who is a construction contractor, so I thought it could be him. However, this caller's approach was sketchy -- like he was an acquaintance who I already knew.
Educational-Ad608@reddit
I think the sketchiest ones are when the caller says, “I spoke to you before and you told me to check back, remember?” Those are the ones that make me think that they think they are talking to an elderly person whose memory might be failing.
SouthConsideration15@reddit
I’m 55 and still screw with the scammers for fun. Had a call from “Verizon” the other day and kept them on the phone for 25 minutes before he realized I was screwing with him. The last name I gave him was Balz, you can guess the first.
RhodeReddit@reddit
This seems both a bit mean and a bit pointless (and a dash of you yourself are lonely or too much time on your hands). I mean, I’ve read the horror stories reading the also-human faces behind some of these young scammers — many in Thailand who’ve gotten themselves into naive jams where what they signed on for was completely different than the reality as they slowly realized it for what it was. Now they’re told they owe money for the lodging or their passport has been taken away & they’re in hell on earth. It was an eye opening expose (Time or Vanity Fair story — don’t recall) & I hope maybe you’ll not waste too much time yankin any one duped person’s chain as punishment. Hanging up is good too.
SouthConsideration15@reddit
If you find it mean or pointless then you probably shouldn’t do it. Meanwhile, anyone calling my number trying to scam me is fair game. I’m hanging up now.

So the old school way of doing this was just getting the white pages and dialing one after another… your name and address were right there.
Now it’s just a computer doing most of the heavy lifting and showing your data to some call center person.
bazzoozzab@reddit

Just answer any numbers you don't know with. Hello, this call is being recorded. 9 out of 10 turn into hang-ups. Got this from an older friend.
Luv2Dnc@reddit
When I was still answering calls, if it was a sketchy number I’d answer with “Good (morning/afternoon) City police department. How may I assist you?” They’d hang up, and the number of scam calls we got dropped significantly.

Scammers be scammers & -50- is a foetus in the 21st century. You're old when you get to 90+ & even then, I see them doing their gardening, growing their own vegetables on 30°slants, walking steep vine roads after their main meal every day, where I live on the German stretch of the Moselle Valley. You're definitely not old. But all ages beware, these scammers are even here on reddit. I've noted a few dubious characters, as one does in all environments, though also noted some lovely commenters gifting their time & thoughtful guidance.

I got a call from a roofing company telling me that they noticed my roof needs to be replaced.
It was only six months old.
I simply said, “the roof had a complete tear down six months ago, so you have zero credibility. Also, this phone is on the Do Not Call List and I’m reporting you to the Feds.”
That ended the call.
Own_Fudge8296@reddit
Yes it’s really scary because people can get your name by looking up your address on the internet. I don’t even think it’s our age at this point I’m 50(f). I think we are all at risk of scammers now. It’s scary

I tried to be nice, and I’m empathetic to people that need to make a living cold calling, but I just say “bad time” and hang up now. I get 3-4 cold calls at work every day. They don’t take “no” for an answer.
Flat_6_Theory@reddit
At least they didn’t show up on your doorstep asking if you’re interested.
IT_learning_only@reddit
That one I hate the most. Also, some have tried to go around me and ask for the man of the house. If I have to make him deal with people he'll get very nasty about it. Their options are me politely saying no, or him telling them to fuck off.
largos7289@reddit
LOL NO... you got to watch out for those Irish driveway guys... They are all scammers.
andyr072@reddit
Why was the fact that got your name and phone number and address creeping you out. You know it's easy to get that information. It's not like they were stalking you or digging deep to get the info. All they need is a street address and they can easily look up the name and the phone number from that as well as the owner's age. It's not all that different from getting junk mail in your mailbox. Your name is on a mailing list that's solicitors purchase.
These days it's even easier.
fastpeoplesearch.com allows you to find all that information and more and you don't even have to pay like some similar online services require.
smuttybuddy84@reddit
Was it s human or a robot? Voice recognition tech is pretty much at the level that we considered to be science fiction when we were kids. Any actual human scammers can be easily identified by their accent.

I am fairly certain Yelp sells your contact info to scammers/spammers. I used Yelp to try to find an arborist and some other house repair stuff. I used their "get a quote" thing where they send your needs and info to a number of contractors. Now I get texts 3-5 times a weeks saying shit like "Hey! We're in your area cutting down some trees! Can we swing by for a free estimate?" Always similar language but signed from a random first name, originating from a different number each time. No company name, just some individual.
MuttsandHuskies@reddit
I haven’t used the Internet to find any kind of quotes and I am getting those texts several times a day. They’re either an arborist or a roofer or some other sort of contractor that’s in our neighborhood.

moscowramada@reddit
I wouldn't read too much into this. From the phone caller's perspective, you were a man, with a house, with a good chance of needing housework. Anything about a 10% chance you'll be interested, they'll call, and you probably scored much higher.

That there was a missed opportunity to screw with a scammer. I used to get these calls all the time at my old job. I could spend an hour BSing them with fake stories and fake information.

No...not because of age. I've had some form of call screening/filter/blocker type of function since the yesteryear's Google Voice (IYKYK) The scam calls have increased in volume (amount) and frequency, at least here in the US, because of various changes in regulations or lack thereof. Just set it up your phone...let that crap go to voicemail.

I don't accept calls from numbers not saved in my phone. They can leave a voicemail which I check every day or two.

This is the way

Anyone can find your name simply by looking up the property tax records on your house.
Then anyone can get your name and phone number (including cell) with a simple, free Google search.
Nothing is private anymore.

I really hate how so many things have become a scam, but that's 2026. Phone calls, Amazon search results, Google search results, your bank's way of doing business - everyone has learned that profit is easier if you just scam your customers.
The Internet is full of lists of your name, telephone number, and address. Easy peasy - all of that is public record more or less, and if there are relevant privacy laws they aren't enforced / enforceable.
I have a credit monitoring / privacy subscription with Experian. They remove all my info from the web like that. People finder sites, reverse phone number lookup, and all that. It's worth it.

We had a massive hail storm about a month ago. You would be surprised how quickly my phone lit up with phone calls … and the most enterprising entity targeted me via Instagram ads

Name, telephone number and address is known by anyone who cares to google your name. People working in sales will know far more.
