Gen Z is Not Drinking, But Are You?
Posted by Pavementaled@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 1310 comments
There are multiple news articles declaring that Gen Z is not drinking, but I feel like the amount of alcohol consumed by people my age may be making up for that. The amount of long time friends and family of mine that drink every day, sometimes hiding it, seems to me to be at an all time high.
How are you all doing? Drinking? No? Somewhere in between?
Dewellah@reddit
I quit in September but went with friends to the Geneva on the Lake pub crawl. Had drinks with dinner on Cinco de Mayo. Other than that, I just don't have a taste for it these days.
JealousDot6409@reddit
I slowed down for sure, now 45 and I might have 1 a week or month lol. My children are of drinking age. But no they don't drink.
SakaWreath@reddit
You’re not drinking enough to make up for the collapse of the Canadian market.
seagullsondeck@reddit
I’m baby boomer. Drink everyday. Bacardi white. Been boozing since I was17. Now 79. Done AA rehabs , nothing worked. Funny quit smoking 45 years ago. Guess my destiny is boozer. I only drink 2-3 hours per day. Approx 10 oz per day. SIGH
ContributionDapper84@reddit
Can you gradually scale it back to 3oz over a year?
Try to add some kind of mixer to reduce cancer "chancer."
fuzzybunnyslippers08@reddit
Never been too much into drinking and then I had an electrical issue with my heart that was triggered by eating and drinking, but it was the drinking I associate it with the most. That was years ago. I will for the experience of a place is known for good alcohol. Beer in German for example
DumPutz@reddit
New state. They have liquor in every store....found this out going to CVS snd Walgreens.
fifilachat@reddit
I could never have sustained my level of alcohol consumption. I would be dead if I’d kept at it. I started drinking in college and never quit the party. Until 14 years ago. My life is so much better for it. I am so much better for it.
alohayogi@reddit
And we are seeing lots of folks dying in their 40's and 50's- many were longtime heavy drinkers. It is poison. When you know better, you do better.
Vegetable-Orchid1789@reddit
Intermittently, depends on how my weight is doing. I definitely enjoy a bourbon or whiskey when relaxing in the evening. Usually only one, sometimes two depending on my schedule. But, it stays in the liquor cabinet when my weight starts creeping upward. Don't drink for a couple of months till my weight comes back down and then it's game on again! So, moderation. Unless the eagles beat my Cowboys, then I drown my sorrows, 😂
Far_Anything_7458@reddit
About once or twice a month I have a glass of wine or two, that's it
tmp1966@reddit

HighJeanette@reddit
No. Quit 2001.
MissDisplaced@reddit
Never been a huge drinker and I don’t drink at home. When I do go out, I may enjoy 2-3 drinks of something, but that’s pretty much my limit nowadays.
Face_with_a_View@reddit
Stopped drinking at the beginning of 2025.
I’m (49f) in my “I need to get healthy or I’m going to end up like my mom” phase so I’ve started lifting heavy, getting my protein, taking walks in nature, cutting back on sugar and focusing on quality sleep.
I still smoke pot but I don’t do anything else. I don’t miss alcohol at all.
The naughtiest I’ve been lately is ordering from Crumble Cookies 🫤
Beginning_Key2167@reddit
I don’t drink anymore. I have noticed a sharp decline in my friends and family my age in how much they drink. My partner has maybe two drinks a month.
I am 57 and it wasn’t fun anymore. Don’t miss it.
I do see the young adults in my family. Don’t drink anywhere near what we did at their age.
They think it is weird to go out and drink to the point of intoxication.
Wish I had thought that way. I spent way too much time hungover on weekends when I was younger.
Due_Palpitation2197@reddit
Yep. This is exactly it. So much wasted time having “fun” you don’t remember. It was a maturity thing for me. I held onto my young and wild days far too long. Been sober a decade now and it feels like I’ve lived ten lives in that time compared to the drinking days, as far as what I’ve been able to accomplish, not to mention weight, appearance, mood, energy level… you name it. All exponentially better after removing booze. There’s not one redeeming quality to poisoning ourselves with alcohol.
Winter-eyed@reddit
I may drink socially but it irritates my bladder now so I generally don’t. Kinda got over all the hype
AcademicAd1788@reddit
Veey rarely. The occasional mixed drink if I'm out to dinner and even then not every time.
seagullsondeck@reddit
Only drink on days that end in Y

I stopped occasionally drinking at home about a year ago. I obly drink socially and the lsst time I did that was nearly 2 months ago. I'm 49 with an autoimmune disease and the hangovers just aren't worth it anymore. It causes too much inflammation in my body and I can hardly get off the couch the next day. I enjoy the occasional glass of wine with dinner or a beer. A good glass of cognac or scotch once in a while. Not much though. I drank a lot more in my 20s-30s.
beaubeaucat@reddit
I drank to the point I was becoming a functional alcoholic (or maybe already was). I was getting drunk every night and pretending it didn't happen the next day. I didn't like it, so I asked for help from my doctor. I'm 5 days sober.
Robwsup@reddit
What was your doctor able to do for you?
beaubeaucat@reddit
She prescribed Naltrexone. I also removed all liquor from the house and have family support.

I have a half glass of wine - maybe two - during the week and, perhaps once a week, I make myself a drink from our home bar.
BettyKat7@reddit
THAT’S a bar in your HOME?
When can I come over?
murrayhenson@reddit
That’s a bar in my home, yes. We had our house built during Covid, but it had always been a dream to have a proper bar - rather than a bunch of bookcases scattered around filled with booze - and, so, we made it happen.
Since you were so nice about my alcohol buying (but not necessarily consuming) problem, here’s a bonus picture with a bartender who is a good listener:

I have a nice bourbon or two on the single night a week I have the house to myself.
I sit in peace, sip and listen to some music and read.

Someday I’m going to drink Canada dry.
Patient-Chocolate531@reddit

HistoricalTowel1127@reddit
I’m not talking about Canada Dry, I talking about every drop of booze in Canada.
Patient-Chocolate531@reddit
Yeah. I was aware.
No_Analysis_283@reddit
I’ll have a couple of drinks most days of the week. I really enjoy quality bourbon when I’m listening to music, or wine with a steak dinner. If I’m floating in the pool or finished working outside, a good beer is very nice. I only drink decent stuff — I don’t drink just anything. I’m pretty picky with the quality.
Tephlonb@reddit
Gave it up decades ago. Seems most of my family doesn't do well with alcohol.

LoveIsLove75@reddit
When I turned 40, I was still drinking regularly. I started getting serious about my health and hired a personal trainer to help me lose weight and increase my mobility for golf. She ended up helping me with my nutrition, as well. She asked me to create a list of my food/beverage intake for one week so she can see where I stand. She saw my alcohol intake and said "I see you like to drink. I am not trying to make you go dry, but can you cut it down to 1-2 drinks a week? Let me explain what drinking does to you. When you drink, your testosterone goes down (sad trombone noise and "limp" you know what) and your bad estrogen goes up (motions to belly and man boobs). That was enough for me to slow down. She was serious about me getting bloodwork to track my progress and no matter how much weight/fat I lost and how heavy I was lifting, nothing would move the needle with my testosterone.
I stopped working out with her eventually but kept working out with what I learned from her. I would get my bloodwork done and still the same results. On a lark, I started group fitness to keep my motivated and one of the trainers was doing "Sober October" and asked if anyone wanted to join her. I volunteered. One month turned into two and I realized I didn't miss drinking. April 2019 I got my first bloodwork after stopping and bam...the increased testosterone results. It was a real eye opener for me.

Gen. Z. Suffers from an excessively high rate of diagnosis depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. The medications used to treat these disorders commonly recommend no alcohol use. Because gen. Z is so enthusiastic about everyone having a handful of mental health disorder diagnosis and have 100% bought into a pharmacological solution there will naturally be a decrease in alcohol consumption.
decuyonombre@reddit
Weird take: I’m on Celexa, buspar and prn Ativan and I’m not barred from drinking
sudrewem@reddit
“Combining alcohol and Celexa (citalopram) is strongly discouraged. Both are processed by your liver and act on your central nervous system, meaning they can dangerously compound each other's effects. “
“Mixing buspirone (Buspar) and alcohol is generally not recommended. Both substances affect the central nervous system, and combining them can increase side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Alcohol can also make your anxiety symptoms worse and interfere with the medication's effectiveness.”
“Mixing Ativan (lorazepam) and alcohol is extremely dangerous and strictly advised against by medical professionals and community consensus. Both substances are central nervous system depressants; combining them drastically multiplies their effects, severely slowing heart rate and breathing, and significantly increasing the risk of a fatal overdose. “
Gen X response likely “meh, I’ll be fine”.
Gen Z response probably “OMG this is too much. I’ll die. No alcohol ever” and go post something about it.
I think Gen X has seen too much and is willing to go by what “feels ok” We’re willing to deal with the consequences of those choices.
Gen Z seems to be scared of a lot of things.
You do you. My meds list is ridiculous. A few are strongly advised against consuming with alcohol. While I seldom drink, some days beer or bourbon is really nice and/or takes the edge off of a rough day. I haven’t died yet. Not even once. I think it’s going to be ok. Moderation is fine and, due to chronic illness, my liver function, kidney function, and CBC are checked regularly and I’m fine.
Do what makes you happy. Just be aware/careful.
Best wishes.
Hedonistic_Yinzer@reddit
Perhaps you should speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Alcohol is contraindicated in all three of those medications, and especially the Ativan.
TimotheeOaks@reddit
Never been much of a drinker. Even in my youth. So that didn't change
Which-Inspection735@reddit
Not too much. I’ll have a couple drinks maybe 1-2x a month. I used to drink a lot of beer (homebrewer for a while), a bottle of bourbon a week, lots of wine. Stopped all that and now it’s very very occasionally.
TheWalkingDev@reddit
I never drank growing up but it bad during the pandemic. These days, I stay from the heavy stuff but do enjoy a couple of beers every so often. I never had any issues abstaining from it, thank God.
Now weed is a different story. I loooved it for a long time and a tough time quitting. But the thing that got me stop were panic attacks, which started during the pandemic as well. I guess that was a blessing in disguise because it finally gave me a good reason to quit it altogether.

I love wine and craft beer and drank almost daily (usually half a bottle of wine with dinner or a couple of beers after work) for decades. I also had epic alcohol tolerance, could easily drink many times that amount, and sometimes did.
That’s past tense because at around 50, I noticed that drinking didn’t feel neutral anymore. It made my aches and pains noticeably worse and made me feel less healthy. So heartbreakingly, I had to cut down.
Now I’m doing my best not to drink on weeknights with zero support from my husband, who still loves drinking and is annoyed that I’m not a dependable drinking buddy every night after work anymore. But it feels like the best thing for my body and I’ve made a substantial change.
He’s on a business trip, I haven’t had a drink for a week, and I feel great. That said, I fully intend to hit the local craft brewery’s tap room tonight if it turns out friends are going. Really looking forward to it, actually. But I’ll keep it to 2 pints or less.

I (53f) am done with all that. After one too many poor choices, I'm all set. Last time I drank enough to get drunk was over 10 years ago. I just have no desire in my day to day life anymore. And this is coming from someone who drank so many beers, shots and/or glasses of wine nearly every day since my late teens/early 20s. Well, except during my pregnancy and nursing, of course. I may have a glass of wine or a beer on a holiday get together or other special occasion but even then, I physically and mentally feel shitty the next day, so no thanks. THC (usually with CBD/CBN/CBG) is my preferred method of relaxing now and I must say, the poor choices have totally subsided, I sleep like a baby, take much better care of myself overall and haven't gotten into any arguments about some unimportant stupid bullshit in years soooo...yeah, no thanks. I'm good.

Not drinking except for the very occasional beer with pizza - like every other month at the most frequent. Spent years as an alcoholic and went cold turkey in 2013. Drinking, but not a lot - at least by Wisconsin standards. Currently I've been into hard ciders, and I might have one (or rarely, 2) before bed 4-5 nights a week. Might have as many as 3 if I go out, but that's usually only about once a month

Oddest thing. After 30 years of steady moderately heavy drinking. Near the end of last year I was watching crap TV at about 1am drinking gin and grapefruit juice.
I walked to the sink and tipped my drink out and the remnants of the gin…..and aside from an odd glass of wine i haven’t had anything to drink since.
No explanation……it just didn’t seem like the thing to do anymore.

About 10 years or so ago, I realized that even one or two drinks gave me an intense hangover and left me feeling like crap for a day or two. I drank a lot socially in my late teens and my 20s, didn’t really drink in my 30s and early 40s because I had kids, then came bunco lol and Saturday nights out with my girlfriends and then I was done. Covid killed the whole going out with my friends on the weekends and we never really got back into it. I much prefer quiet and solitude at this point in my life. My husband who’s three years older than me still drinks, most evenings, not heavily, but has a drink or two most nights.

I was never a hard drinker, sticking to one glass by myself, maybe 2 in social situations and not every day. I used to like triple fermented beers, a glass of wine with a meal or an Islay Scotch to sip, but the last few years I'm down to one beer per season or so it seems.
Komaisnotsalty@reddit
Not a drop in 6 years. Drank very heavily in the 90s, tapered off to binge drinking on camping trips or whatever in the 00s and now don't drink at all anymore.
Didn't go to AA or anything, just simply don't feel the need anymore due to putting myself in therapy and dealing with why I drank myself nearly to death.
Doesn't bother me if someone else drinks, I don't even feel the desire.

I rarely drink and when I do it's just one drink. I'm just not into it anymore, but sometimes a cold beer with a steak or burger hits.
AlmiranteCrujido@reddit
I haven't drank regularly since college, but COVID killed what tolerance I have left. One drink even slowly with a meal gives me an upset stomach, so even the "one cider or glass of wine with a nice dinner" I was doing for a a few years is out now.
It's annoying, I kind of miss it, but my doctor wasn't particularly concerned of it being a sign of something more serious so I don't see the need to seek a "fix" for it.
Top-Net779@reddit
Catching covid really slowed down eating and drinking for a while. Alcohol tasted weirdly metallic for years.
stoptalking8871@reddit
Nope Don’t like the taste of it Don’t like how it makes me feel- at the time and the next day Have zero need to fit in with people who do - (who am I kidding- I don’t t hang out with anyone but my husband- and don’t care to )
Green-Circles@reddit
It's an interesting mix here of people who consciously quit drinking (usually for health reasons).. and some who just had lifestyle changes naturally happen that reduced drinking opportunities & they just kinda cut right back or stopped that way.
Like... getting married, having kids, not really going out to drinking occasions anymore etc, so it kinda naturally falls by the wayside...

Green-Circles@reddit
I drunk a LOT in student days in the 1990s..which was about average for being young adult I guess.. but since I got married in the early 2000s, a LOT less.
Typically I would only drink once a year when I went to the end of year work Christmas party, and then just a few to settle the nerves... but the parties stopped for a while with Covid - and I haven't been to one since they restarted.
So, I haven't had an alcoholic drink since December 2019.. not consciously given up for health or anything, just haven't had the opportunity or drive to I guess.
Got me thinking though, maybe I should go to the work party this Christmas, it has been a while.. and might have a drink or two then.

I stopped. Diabetes.
I’ll admit I do miss it. I drank frequently but not heavily. My wife and I used to enjoy something (beers, wine, something unusual) every Friday.
The family on both sides loved their alcohol as well. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents, cousins. The most common reason for stopping was health.
These days the millennials still drink a bit but the rest not really. Odd exception are my gen z cousin and nephew.
CtrlAltComment@reddit
I'm 58 and stopped drinking at 21. I did more drinking before I could legally. I had seen a lot of what can happen when people are intoxicated, from car accidents, r@pe, physical injuries, rage, abuse, and alcoholism that takes over people's lives. The clincher was vomiting profusely after drinking southern comfort. I never did that before and found out it was because I pregnant and went cold turkey.
Krissy_ok@reddit
I quit 4 years back. I had found myself racing towards an early grave, angry, stressed, on the way to being broke and not the mother I wanted to be. So I poured the remainder down the drain and white knuckled the next few months until the craving started to wear off. Shout out to r/stopdrinking. I can't tell you how much that sub helped me.

I've noticed the same. My daughter's college held a 6 to 6 party at their campus last week. I was a bit worried what they would get up to. If we'd tried it, it would have been a major party.
There was some drinking, but the computer lab held a gaming marathon and one class screened Anime. The rest of the kids just had a good time.
My daughter and her friends were all sober when I picked them up the next morning.
pdxtee@reddit
I was never a big drinker(wine with dinner & a mix drink or whiskey while out) but now I drink maybe 1-2 times a quarter. I prefer to stay clear headed & I don’t like when the drink bill is larger than the food bill. I like mocktails. I know a lot of Gen X who drink like fish when they party. Not everyday but when they do, they do it big.

I cut back when my eldest was born because I was so tired all the time, it just wasn't worth it.

I was never a big drinker so I don't really mind.

Never was a drinker...a beer now and again and that is about it and certainly not hard alcohol. I grew up in Wisconsin where drinking is the state sport and saw way too many people I grew up with descend into alcoholism. Wasted, non-nutritional calories that lead to stupid behaviors. No thanks.
Zealousideal_Lab_427@reddit
I did so much drinking in high school and in my late 20s (surprisingly not college), I hit my quota and don’t need to drink now.
But seriously, I’ll have an occasional glass of wine if I’m at my drinkiest friend’s house. I could honestly go without for the rest of my life.
jellitate@reddit
Sometimes (2-3 times a month) but I need to stop. There’s a direct correlation to alcohol the day before and how withered my face looks the morning after. I’m sad to say that vanity may make me a teetotaler.

I never drank much because I just don't like how it tastes or how it makes me feels. Specifically I get flushed and hot. I have red hair and fair skin so I look like a tomato. Low alcohol, nice taste and I won't look like a bottle of ketchup.

boulevardofdef@reddit
I've never been a big drinker and have always told people that if the doctor told me tomorrow that I could never drink again, I'd have no problem whatsoever with it. Well, turns out that kind of happened recently! I started having stomach issues, and I was able to identify alcohol as one of the triggers. So I'm not drinking anymore and it's a little harder than I was expecting -- sometimes I really crave a glass of wine with a steak, and I had no idea what to do at a recent work happy hour with an open bar (carbonated beverages are a no, too, and I eventually ordered an orange juice). But it's not THAT hard.

I still have the beers and ciders in my garage fridge from the week that I started taking the shots.
ElevenIron@reddit
Tirzepatide (Zepbound) is far more effective at curbing alcohol desire than semaglutide (Wegovy). My COVID era bourbon collection is quietly collecting dust these days.
implicate@reddit
I've tried both, and both seem to have the same effect on my desire to drink.
jIdiosyncratic@reddit
That's great. I'm really interested in this. There just don't seem to be enough studies to support therefore if you have shitty medical like I do they would never cover it.

Stopped drinking for about fifteen years. Started again about November last year and just can't get enough when it comes to a decent whisky sour.
The biggest hassle is finding a decent one
NumberOk9619@reddit
I drank these when I used to drink. I drank good bourbon straight but would take the edge off of rot gut whiskey with a splash of Faygo 60/40. Probably not the "decent" whiskey sour you're after, but it works.
Otherwise-Let4664@reddit
I can't drink anymore, and I miss it a lot.

The hangxiety isn't worth it anymore! I used to come home from work and polish off a 2L Jackson-Triggs Pinot Grigio (not a flex, it was functional alcoholism) and I get anxiety even smelling alcohol now. It's like I hit 47 and it flicked a switch on my body's ability to metabolize alcohol!

Just had a close long time friend pass away last year from drinking. She had been drinking since our teen years. She was born in 66. She was hiding it these last few years from everyone including her husband.
We all drank in our teens. I drank A LOT. In my teens, in the military, After the military, right up til 8 years ago when I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. I have (and can have) a drink every so often now, but honestly have no desire to. I live alone now and there is really no reason to drink alone.

I drank like a fish in my teens, 20s and 30s. In 40s, I did heavily but not like when I was younger. Most of my drinking was when I’d go out to a bar or restaurant.
Now in my 50s, I have numerous bottles of hard liquor, but it’s rare that I touch them. I do drink beer some high ABV, some of it low. I won’t go under 4.5%. But maybe 2 or 3 a week.

Yes. Never to excess any more. Maybe to the point of a nice buzz if I’m not driving or if I have the time to do enjoy it. Even that is maybe once week.
I honestly like the taste of a well made cocktail or a good craft beer. If we are going out to eat at a nice restaurant, my wife and I will both have a pre-dinner cocktail. If it’s really good we might have a second.

Drank regularly in my 20’s as the weekend started on Thursday nights for us back then. In my 30’s I definitely slowed down a lot, but I smoked more weed. Hit my 40’s and hit a rough spot in my marriage at the same time my brother in-law lost his wife to cancer, so we were getting hammered every weekend, sometimes during the week too. Now that I’m in my 50’s, I might get through a 6-pack over the whole weekend. I’m hooked on michelada’s now.
Violent_Martians@reddit
I always have something in the house to drink. Beer, wine, liquor, seltzers, but rareley drink it myself. That being said summer is coming so floats in the pool, yard work, bonfires, will ensure i'll have at least 3-4 over a weekend. I never drink when we go out as I'm always driving.

I used to drink a lot, and there were many instances of being blackout drunk in my 20s. In the late years of my awful marriage, I went through a bottle of wine every day. Can't even smell red wine anymore, honestly. I worked that I was heading in an alcoholic direction. My current incredible partner helped me assess my reasons for drinking to excess, and it's just something I don't do anymore. I'll still enjoy a glass of white or rosé, but not every day, and I'm happy with just one. The need to feel that buzz has disappeared in the face of a very healthy relationship.

I still drink socially but very rarely alone. Even socially I often just share a 12 oz can of beer between two or three people. I'll have a few drinks maybe once a month.
I drank pretty heavily during Covid (a bottle of wine every two days, sometimes a bit more) but it was never an addiction. It was more out of boredom than anything else.
There was a time in the mid 2000s when I worked in an office full time, and one day on my way home from work, I caught myself craving the half-size can of beer I was rationing myself at the time. I didn't like the feeling of that craving so I quit drinking for a while and quit the job shortly after. So I know the early signs of dependency and actively avoid the when necessary.
entropyparty@reddit
Now I drink from 0-10 drinks per month. Almost never 10 usually around 5. I’m still blessed to not get hangovers as long as I stay hydrated and watch what I drink. But my limit for one evening is three if I’m not driving, two if I am.

Growing up drinking everyday by adults was common place. Even while driving. The majority of my extended family are alcoholics by today's standards including myself. I checked into a detox/ rehab and never looked back. My blood pressure dropped to normal after quitting smoking. No more depression. I eat better and lost 40 lbs. I did AA for a short time and it helped until it wasn't necessary anymore. I have no cravings or desire to drink and I don't preach.
beaujolais98@reddit
I didn’t plan to stop drinking but over the years it’s just tapered off to practically nothing. Will drink a good amount of beer when we go to Vegas for a few days once a year, and maybe a bottle of wine with dinner 2 or 3 times a year. That’s pretty much it these days. Just got tired of the killer hangover if I tied one on; and even more than 2 or 3 drinks these days messes with my sleep.

Only socially, and that happens more infrequently now. I was never a heavy drinker to begin with but I enjoy good wine with company.
The 90’s was way more when I was clubbing a lot With a Marlboro light in one hand and an Alabama Slammer in the other.

Not anymore I think I drank too much as a teenager.

Gave up alcohol at my 50th. I couldn’t function for a week after. I feel way better than I did when I was drinking.
ScheanaShaylover@reddit
I love drinking still. I drink champagne/prosecco because it agrees with me. In the summer maybe a tequila/marg or High Noon by the pool or beach. Everything else gives me massive heartburn or a headache. I never get drunk. A hangover would require a week off! Firmly a day drinker. Very sensible and fairly boring but it makes me happy!
Salt-Path3779@reddit
Prosecco day drinking is the cheat code. Start at 4, in bed by 9, wake up feeling fine. Cheers.

I actually drink pretty moderately. But both of my Gen Z kids are much heavier drinkers than I am. I have been told by them that beer is out of style while mixed drinks are in.
Lumpy-Artist-6996@reddit
I've seen that too. The Gen Z I know are really into a Mad Men Era of mixed drinks or expensive scotch. Not so much beer or wine. That's if they drink at all.
I've never been much of a drinker and I don't use any cannabis products either.

I still drink but more than one and I feel off the next day, and don't sleep very well. I drank a lot in my younger days but always was in control of it. My mom is an alcoholic so I was always wary of my own habits once I knew that about her.

Rarely. Thing is I can’t risk a headache. Since I had Covid in 2020, they’re triggered easily and last up to 5 days. I’m on day 2 of one now and can’t even blame alcohol.

I met my husband at a bar, both hammered in 1993. We were regular binge drinkers until we got married and I got pregnant with our eldest. Now I just don't drink. I realized that when I do its all or none and It just makes feel like shit. It was fun when I was a kid. It's not fun any more. Not worth it. I'll stick to the weed. Unfortunately, my husband is still a daily drinker. He's an alcoholic.

In late July it will be 8 years since I quit. Working out great for me. Quit the THC about 3 months ago, even better. I tend to overdo these kings things and I was just subbing in weed for booze. A better bad choice and harm reduction but cognitively I was slipping noticeably. Happy to report metal clarity and sharpness gets better by the day. At some point I expect I’ll pop a gun or or hit on someone’s vape if the occasion permits but no more consistent usage.

I was having a couple beers a couple days a week on average. Crept up to 3-4 beers, 3-4 days a week during the winter (pairs well with sports and being cooped up indoors).
Decided to take some time off and reset a bit so coming up on a three month sober streak. Fortunately it is more of a behavioral habit for me that is triggered by social events or even boredom sometimes.
After a month or so I didn't miss or crave it anymore and felt healthier (and had some blood test results that showed related health improvements as well).

No alcohol for 7 years here not even socially. Hang overs suck at my age with my health conditions and the various meds I’m on.

We quit drinking at home right before the holidays. I was having surgery and my husband just decided it was time for a break. Five months later, we're still not drinking at home (with very rare exception) and less frequently when we go out. I still like a drink but the hangover, even from a one drink, is shocking.
axolattaquestions@reddit
A bottle of wine per month but usually in one sitting
Piney_Dude@reddit
Dude, I’m staying at a hotel on Main st. In Newark DE, a college town. There are lines to get in the bars. I’m glad I ate earlier.
Cute_Conclusion_1355@reddit
I don’t really drink…before I got pregnant I had maybe a margarita a month which I shared with my husband who doesn’t really drink much either. After having my daughter I haven’t had any alcohol and my husband has a beer now and then.
nancylyn@reddit
No, I quit for good 3 years ago. I was using it as a crutch and it was making me feel bad. I was caretaking my dad with dementia and life sucked bad enough without waking up feeling shitty every morning. He’s gone now but the joy I feel every morning waking up with energy and a clear head is so worth it. I highly recommend quitting.
Mental-Artist-6157@reddit
I was a proper boozebag until I went to massage therapist school in 2014. I learned why it was so rough on the body. Now I'll have a glass or two of white wine on a Saturday night with my husband.

Yes. But not enough. I, maybe as part of a minority group, love drinking. Not in the drunkard, fall down, blackout sense but in the steady intake of daily post-work drinks, day off poolside cocktails, etc.. I love swilling beers, taking tequila shots, mixing and sipping cocktails. I will return to my old drinking ways once I retire.

I got sober over 14 years ago with a bit of a nudge from Phoenix PD and the Maricopa County jail system. It was time. Past time, actually. I can’t drink like normal people, so I choose not to. I share my recovery story around the country and found a career in mental health education and support right around my one year sober date.
All that said, I don’t begrudge anyone else their freedom to drink. I never want(ed) to become some kind of anti-alcohol or anti-drug zealot. If people aren’t harming others in the process, more power to them!

Haven't had a drink in over a year. Slipped off into a proper Leaving Las Vegas type drinking binge. Like years worth. Some friends caught on and checked me into a couple weeks of rehab. That 10 months ago. Don't do AA either, and haven't swore it off for good, but I'm in hurry to have a drink either. That week fucked me up.

I’m allergic, so I can’t. Hubby has an after work drink a few nights per week. Many genxers I worked with drank regularly, but I also think that was bc of the industry/social events for business.
SynXis_ps2@reddit
I partied and drank in college, but as I grew older I rarely drank. My father was an alcoholic so I always tried to be careful but I think in the end we're just wired very differently and it didn't appeal to me the same way. I always felt like hangovers hit be very hard as well. So I pretty much only drink a little on special occasions and no more than a few times a year.
However, recently I discovered THC beverages and have been enjoying those at home on weekends. They provides a nice buzzy high with no hangover. I was never into weed or drugs growing up so this THC experience is new to me.
doglady1342@reddit
Yup. My grandfather was an alcoholic and so was my mother. My dad drank, sometimes excessively, but was definitely not an alcoholic. I don't think I really made a conscious decision to not drink (much), but that definitely plays a part in it. Plus, my mother had Alzheimer's. It is not something that runs on her side of the family. She is the first person on that side to have any sort of dementia that we know of. My grandmother and great-grandmother lived to be very old and we're both very very sharp until the end. I had four doctors, including my mother's neurologist, tell me that her Alzheimer's was almost definitely caused by her excessive consumption of alcohol over the decades. I do not want to end up like that.

Health issues caused me to slow down about 4 years ago and completely quit two years ago. It was awkward socially because I find a lot of our friends were heavy drinkers, but in the past year it’s been amazing to see how many people are quitting.
ShockedNChagrinned@reddit
Having experienced the stupidity, or at least naivety, of youth, learning through experience how aging changes how you metabolize alcohol and slows recovery, and not really appreciating anything that impacts decision making anymore, no. An occasional single drink for the taste during an event, but that's about it.
CoffeeCup317@reddit

I have a drinking problem that I've only recently begun to address, seriously. I thought I was alone in that, among the people I who I knew from my youth, who seemed to be doing really well, until, until I really got into one-on-one contact with a few old friends from back in the day. Turns out, so many of my brothers and sisters are in it, bad. I think alcoholism among us is even worse than statistics might show.

Very rarely these days. I had a drink (may have been two) over dinner one night last month, and the same a month or so before that. Pretty sure those are the only times I’ve drank this year.
I’ve definitely put away my share of booze over the years (nightly for many of them) but, among other things, my husband sliding well into full-blown alcoholism and beyond made me just… not enjoy it anymore.

I quit alcohol cold turkey when I was diagnosed with de novo metastatic breast cancer two years ago. Unlike 10 years ago, there are now a ton of excellent NA beers & cocktails (wines need work but I’ve had good NA cava). I’m in a clinical trial and stable/NEAD now, and my oncologist has only been positive about quitting alcohol (and is fine with edible cannabis, although my medications will interact with CBD so I have to be careful with strains).

I cut way back a few years ago after realizing that beer was largely responsible for my Dad's dementia. He had untreated trauma that he dealt with by drinking a lot of beer. ymwv / not medical advice/ etc. I recently did some constant glucose monitoring, it was amazing how a single glass of dry red wine as you begin to eat lunch or dinner blunts the blood sugar spike you get from food. Apparently this is something diabetics are becoming aware of (and of course doctors can't actually tell you to do, but...).
I stopped drinking beer (stomach/calories) and have slowed down the cocktails (though weirdly not the liquor buying, my cabinet is literally overflowing, but hey, they had x at the shop for the first time in ages, and you never know- this might run in the family, my father died recently and we found 1970s smirnoff in the drinks cabinet)

Not to speak of. Didn't drink at all when I was younger, apart from the occasional half glass of champagne at the few weddings I attended that had alcohol at all. When I started doing karaoke and developing a social life after my divorce, I did some social drinking and learned what kinds of cocktails I enjoy, but after maybe a year and a half it calmed back down again. I know multiple peers who are sober as well as multiple who drink. I don't think there's much of a generalization one can make about the drinking habits of our generation, especially in absence of corresponding data about other substances. For instance, I think a portion of the decline in alcohol intake by the younger generations reflects the increasing availability of legal weed and weed products.

Drinking was a thing we did at family functions as a kid/teen/adult. As in I was always allowed alcohol growing up. We have stories of 10month old me being drunk for the first time.
I realized how unhealthy that is, so seriously cut down on drinking around my family, and than just drinking in general.
Put up some hard boundaries on family giving my kids alcohol, and stuck to them hard.
Both my adult gen z kids drink.
Oldest will have a drink maybe 2 at Christmas. Maybe 1 or 2 the whole summer season at our cottage. Otherwise he doesnt. He is always the DD of his friend group.
My youngest has great plans to drink her ass off. Has 1 drink. Makes a second, and half that goes down the drain.
Since their teenage rebellion, I have never seen them drunk or "tipsy".
Me, Im having a beer right now. But that will be all for me tonight.

Or a margarita. Or a pint of wine if I'm having a fancy dinner.
I've never been one for going out and paying too much for a crappy beer, and getting a margarita at a restaurant is too damn expensive these days.
For me, sometimes it just having a flavored beverage in the evening that I desire, cuz I get less interested in water after I've had a gallon or so during the day. Since I seem to have a weird relationship with caffeine I try to avoid having something caffeinated after 1400.

Yeah I only drink rarely especially if I see one particular friend but I used to be able to drink until 4 am in college and get up to work at 6 am for the city street crew. I can’t fathom that now. Cocktail at 5 after a long day is nice. Can't have more than 2. My liver thanked me
GarionOrb@reddit
Still drinking quite often. My friends and I love to go out wine tasting.
And no, our generation isn't making up for Gen Z. Wine sales are way down across the board, and some wineries are forgoing making wine because they're sitting on so much inventory.
Few_Newspaper_3655@reddit
I only drink on very special occasions and usually just take a few sips. Alcohol interacts with my medication.
LilJeezy17@reddit
I quit entirely about 3 years ago after going hard during COVID lol. Life is much better without it
FroToTheLow@reddit
OP, with that many friends and family that drink everyday, I have to ask: Are you from Wisconsin?
8drearywinter8@reddit
Ha! As someone who drank heavily through part of my 20s while living in Wisconsin and didn't realize that wasn't done everywhere to the same extent until I left (after which I cut back a lot), I must say this is indeed a relevant question.
sunfish99@reddit
I was going to say, I seldom drink but I have friends that have 2-3 glasses of wine/beer every night. They are in fact from Wisconsin.
Azerafael@reddit
I really wish i could drink like i used to but gout has limited my drinking to maybe 3-4 glasses of wine once a week.
Lord but i miss beer/lager.
Temporary_Shirt_6236@reddit
I have a few buddies, a bit older than me, who've had to cut out beer because of gout. Gout sucks the fat one as it is, but this doubly sucks.
blatkinsman@reddit
My wife drinks almost daily, wine or beer.
I drink bi-weekly, whiskey one day and beer the on the other day when we go to the brewpub.
If we go out more than that, I will have a drink then also.
wolfgang187@reddit
Once a month. Its the only frequency I can consume alcohol and maintain normal blood pressure without heart meds.
Extension-Pick8310@reddit
Hell yeah. Drinking a cold Chardonnay as I type.
jnyrdr@reddit

Yes, if dining out. Not regularly.
Temporary_Shirt_6236@reddit
I don't drink any more.

oboingadoing@reddit
Yes, I'm having a beer right now
OutdoorRaleigh@reddit
Cheers, me too
Itchy_Undertow-1@reddit
Nope. Quit 2004.
ForgottenGenX47@reddit
Yes, but I am tracking my intake to be more mindful about it. Drinking less than I had been, so yay me.
Ianthin1@reddit
I had a beer with dinner last night. First one in over a month. Woke up with a splitting headache. I think I’m done.
CanMoo@reddit
I do miss getting a little tipsy with my friends...but it's no longer worth the consequences of how my body reacts these days.
Aromatic_Revolution4@reddit
I, and most GenXers I know, have either stopped drinking or have cut back to just a few times a year.
Primary_Company_3813@reddit
Forced sobriety. Even I wanted to, booze... like many things is a luxury we can't afford!
kerosenehat63@reddit
Only when I go to concerts. And my limit is 3 beers.
Caloso89@reddit
I have not had a drink of alcohol since December 28, 1998. Let's just say that I had had enough.

No. I like my liver and my brother and father drank themselves to death. Hard pass on having to have a drink. I have friends whose social media is just beer and alcoholic drinks because it’s their entire personality. It’s not my thing.
Nobody in my family would have gotten help or sought out therapy. Which is too bad.
aradiacat@reddit
I've have cut way back..... thankfully we have weed.
whyunoleave@reddit
I’m good for a couple of drinks a 1-2 nights a week but I have always preferred thc and it doesn’t make me feel like hell the next day. Easier legal access certainly helps. Tough buying weed from a shady connection in your 50s
SssnakeJaw@reddit
I hardly ever drink anymore. Too many calories, too man carbs and too many trips to the bathroom.
Plus the hangovers no longer make it worth it.
kaiser_soze_72@reddit
Weekends only. 2016 and on thru Covid had me drinking daily and cut back in 21. Much easier to control it during this admin luckily enough.
yeahwellokay@reddit
Not in 16 years.
8drearywinter8@reddit
Developed alcohol intolerance a few years ago. Now any (even small amount of) alcohol makes me sick for 24 to 48 hours. Which makes me sad. I still like alcohol, but it stopped liking me back. Sigh. Someone who can still drink, please have a nice glass of scotch for me, okay? I miss it.
If I hadn't developed a strong intolerance to alcohol, I would still be drinking, albeit in much smaller quantities than I did in my 20s (to be fair, I spent most of my 20s in Wisconsin, where drinking to excess was the norm, and cut back after leaving, when I realized that wasn't at all normal most other places... except when I was teaching in Russia... yeah, they drink like that too there).
Anyway, would prefer to be drinking in moderation these days, but can't.

No_Caterpillar_8573@reddit
Good for you! I just started on that path a couple of months ago for the same reason. Just shy of needing a liver transplant.

Same. Aside from a short stint in the army overseas it’s never been a big deal.

We quit drinking regularly after Covid. It’s gotten so expensive. We drink on vacation if abroad and occasionally have a drink out on special occasions. We don’t drink at all at home except NA beer and gin and tonics (they are pretty good). I’m going on a cruise in January and am planning on not drinking at all. It makes me feel terrible even if I only have one drink- makes my heart race and I can’t sleep. Weed is what I need now. :)
Empty_Nestor@reddit
I can’t believe anyone drinks on a cruise. The cost is insane!
Mom_who_drinks@reddit
I was a heavy drinker for years but I cut back to almost nothing about 3 years ago. My Gen Z kid drinks, as he was raised with an appreciation for fine bourbon. But he doesn’t drink every day and he doesn’t drink a lot at any one sitting. Very different than his dad and me at his age.
ShadowyTreeline@reddit
Almost never. Basically I drink when I read a book or story that mentions a cocktail or liquor I've never heard of before, and I'm curious about it. Amounts to probably less than ten drinks a year.
Ambitious_Lead693@reddit
I'm a non drinking alcoholic these days. My kids don't seem to drink much, but do a lot more weed than I did. Being legal now makes it easier i guess.
GenXHelicopterCatMom@reddit

arothmanmusic@reddit
I drink way less than I used to. It's an unnecessary expense and I get a headache the next day more easily than I used to.
Jillee2@reddit
Probably have one drink every month or two with a nice dinner. I’m drunk after one. Hungover the next day if I drink two. So I really have to weigh the risks vs benefits. I used to be able to drink rivers of red wine, and then one day unexpectedly it just did not work any longer. It just fell away. No warning lol. I do miss the ability to enjoy a drinking evening.
Brendy171@reddit
I drink beer, it all depends honestly. Summer coming though and it does pair nicely with a float in the pool
foozballhead@reddit
Can't afford to, so no, I'm really not drinking except for special occasions. But i do have a bottle of cheap champagne in my fridge I'm looking forward to cracking open as soon as some big good news hits, any day now.

I’m trying to drink enough for me and at least 3-4 gen Z’ers.
nunyabizthewiz@reddit
Not really. I will have a drink or two when I go out to dinner but that is super rare.
Phobos1982@reddit
Gen Z grew up with accessible weed. Weed was harder for us to get back in the day and I can't do weed because of my job, so I drink, a lot.
vantablalicious@reddit
They also can’t really afford it and are factoring in the roi, I don’t blame em

My wife (56F) stopped cold turkey about a year ago, and I (55M) discovered the tasty low cal NA beers and beer-tails in the market now (Thanks Gen Z) and have almost exclusively gone over to these NA yummies. I have the occasional whiskey soda with a drinking friend or relative, but usually one (used to be 3 or 4) and then switch back to my new favs.

Rarely, but I didn’t drink much to begin with. I do enjoy the taste, but I never found getting drunk or buzzed particularly fun. It kinda sucked for a long time being someone who genuinely likes the taste of a good whiskey or wine but doesn’t like getting drunk, because for a long time the only NA options were soda (and I don’t like soda).
I am glad that all the kids abstaining these days means that bars and restaurants are making creative NA options more available.

One neat dram of peanut butter whisky every now and then. Or a glass of red with a meal sometimes.

I am drinking a healthy portion (2 1/2 fingers) of double-oaked bourbon as I type this.

I drink, but very rarely. My ginger brother died in a single vehicles dui crash. My dad hurt himself bad enough he had to relearn walking because of his drunk stupidity. I have 4 kids and only 1 of them drinks to get drunk more than once a month. The others barely drink.
ImOvrIt1969@reddit

Edibles. I have asthma and alcohol doesn't do it for me.
Critical-Range1213@reddit
Too much, trying naltrexone to cut back and it kinda works.
For me, now 50, I cannot sleep after drinking. Ie, last night I had a bottle of wine, maybe a bit more. Asleep by 10, up at 3. Done. Tossed and turned till it was time to get up. I love wine between 5 and 9 but hate it all other hours.
I’d rather have weed but it’s not legal here…
Eve_N_Starr@reddit
7 years sober this July, and loving it. I started binge drinking in my teens; it intensified in my 30s and became unsustainable in my 40s. No more hangxiety, brain fog or brownouts; and way less depression.
daydreamersunion@reddit
My days in the bars are done. I am really pushing it if I have more than two beers at a cookout or something. My 25yr old self would think Ive grown old and boring. By 90s standards I would be right.
DPax_23@reddit
Really cut my drinking down 3 years ago to maybe 4 times a year. Stopped drinking altogether a little over a year ago.
I've never been a big drinker though.
I still have a nominal sip of alcohol for religious practices but its so tiny its meaningless.
