Is anyone else reaching the "everything is too damn loud" stage of life?

I’m hitting a phase where normal, everyday sounds are officially turning into aggravating noise.
I’m not talking about my constant companion, tinnitus. And I'm not talking about understandable stuff like a grandkid crying.
It's the mundane, background stuff: cars and bikes cruising up and down the street, the endless weekend symphony of leaf blowers and chainsaws, doors closing (not even slamming), and neighbors shouting for their kids.
Even the school bell down the road, the local golf course’s weather siren, emergency sirens in the distance, the ducks squawking at the lake a block away, and dog barking (including my own dogs!) are suddenly grating on my nerves.
But here’s the irony. I still have to turn the TV, music, and sports commentary way up just to hear the dialogue.
Selective hearing? Aging ears? I don't know, but I just want some peace and quiet. Tell me I'm not the only one.
CzarGuy111@reddit
Restaurants annoying af now lol
harrismi7@reddit
Yes! I can’t stand loud noises anymore. I carry ear plugs in a little case that is on my key ring. I wear them at pretty much every sporting event or concert I go to. Loud exhaust, screaming kids, loud dogs, leaf blowers and lawn mowers, the list goes on and on.
At 52 I still have really good hearing and can pick up faint noises. I’m trying to preserve my hearing by wearing the ear plugs. My parents could both use hearing aids, especially my dad. He had them before but they either went bad or something and he didn’t get new ones. He just turns the TV up loud. You can’t have a conversation because of the TV volume. It’s very annoying!
cindoc75@reddit
Just my husband’s chewing! I kid - kind of. 😂
IM_The_Liquor@reddit
I’m at the ‘whaaatt???!!’ Stage of my life… but I blew out my hearing in my earlier 20s listening to too much small arms fire, artillery grenades, rockets and other explosions without proper hearing protection….
temerairevm@reddit
Same except it’s working in construction and live music.
FriendRaven1@reddit
Bet it's not service related...
IM_The_Liquor@reddit
I played that game long ago. I even got veteran affairs to admit it was pay for my hearing aids and my disability benefits for my hearing loss eventually 🤣.
Majik_Sheff@reddit
I have a sensory processing disorder. You just described my entire life.
GooseySill@reddit
I'm 52, and play bass guitar in a couple of tribute bands (AC/DC & Ozzy), so not quite there yet.
greenman5252@reddit
What?
Fuzzteam7@reddit
It’s more annoying because it takes your attention from what you’re doing like reading a book or trying to concentrate on something else. It’s like that for me anyway. Right now my dog barking in the yard is annoying me because I’m trying to type this comment on my phone. 🙄
OldHead1776@reddit
I don't think I complain about noise a ton, but selfish fucktards with loud exhausts on their cars and motorcycles really piss me off. I hope every one of them dies in a fire.
Saint909@reddit
I hate outdoor shopping malls that pump top 40 turned up to 10 outside. Why do this?!
BogusNom@reddit
Drunk, loud people in restaurants while I'm trying to enjoy my meal.
Live bands in local pubs that make it impossible to actually talk to people you're with.
Cafes that pump out loud music for "atmosphere".
Crowded public places.
The People.
I live on land. With trees and birds and butterflies away from The People. It's blissful.
Oh God, I'm old aren't I? 😂
I love loud music in my car though. That's my car karaoke time.
Neither_Remote_4818@reddit
Yes…unless my show is on, then turn it up! 😂😉
gjohill@reddit
For me it's not the volume, it's the noise. Still drag my wife to every punk rock show, and we both have tinnitus, and love the show. But the damn noise. People talking without saying anything.
ZebraBorgata@reddit
I think I’m “on the spectrum” for a handful of reasons but I’ve never liked loud noise, loud music or crowds. As a teen my friends went to so many concerts while I went to very select few mainly for those loud & crowded reasons.
docsiege@reddit
me too. i've always had a hard time with concerts, and now i very much dislike door slamming and loud car noises also...
MuttsandHuskies@reddit
I’m here with you. I don’t like a lot of noise. And people talking with raised voices kind of makes me retreat due to trauma. But too much noise will trigger a migraine for me. My husband is half deaf so he has to have the TV on blast which means I generally do not watch TV with him I’m usually in a different room either playing a game or painting. But to OP point just the general outside noise is too much. Granted when we were kids or younger, the population was less, but it’s just there’s so much noise. Everything makes noise.
tranquilrage73@reddit
Yes. Especially the damn kids in my lawn.
railworx@reddit
No way, man! I'm gonna keep rockin' forever!
LocksmithGlass717@reddit
Yes. 10 years ago the movies started amplifying the volume to a ridiculous level to make up for crappy storytelling and acting
AbjectBeat837@reddit
Yes. I didn’t realize my daughter is the loudest person in the world until just recently.
DetectiveWise2923@reddit
Mom?
Upset_Peace_6739@reddit
It is either too loud or not loud enough. There is no in between.
Lost_Ad_9890@reddit
all i did was read the intro and started laughing my ass off, WTF??? here we go. Its finally hit Gen X🤣🤣🤣
StarDewbie@reddit
Yup, but for me it started like 10 years ago.
notguiltybrewing@reddit
The idiot across the street who's been working on his antique truck by grinding metal a couple hours a day, every day is getting on my nerves. Most other sounds, no, not really.
Elusive_strength2000@reddit
My dogs barking and others around drive me crazy. People talking loudly irritates me. People talking on cell in store or screaming kids makes me nearly lose it and look for the furthest escape, only for them to somehow find me again. So yes. It’s a thing. 🙉
skspoppa733@reddit
Definitely had to start turning down the music in the car to see awhile ago.
blondvet@reddit
Every. Day.
Tollowarn@reddit
I just take out my hearing aids.
blondvet@reddit
I just put in noise cancelling headphones.
the_natis@reddit
Just babies in stores and parents not going anything about it.
RealtorRVACity@reddit
100%
MundaneHuckleberry58@reddit
Last two times I’ve gone to a movie I’ve said to myself I’m not going again til I get earplugs.
worrymon@reddit
Decades ago.
And yet I choose to live in a noisy city because it's easier to filter out constant noise than it is to filter out random sporadic noise.
Sea-Butterscotch9805@reddit
I'm expecting hearing loss for sure and it's related to voices more than anything else.
cgund@reddit
I'm more at the "they got a lotta nerve charging that for a salad" phase.
renegade7717@reddit
guess I’m in this group as well. How the hell is this pizza $25?? Besides I ride a motorcycle so hard to complain about noise - I need these distracted drivers to hear me rather than run me over
urlach3r@reddit
Treated myself to some doughnuts from the local shop yesterday... Half dozen glazed & a fritter, $9.65. I didn't realize doughnuts had become an aspirational item.
AnastasiaNo70@reddit
Jesus!
AnastasiaNo70@reddit
Oh man. Hello, friend. YES. I find myself saying “boy they sure are proud of their _____” (whatever overpriced thing it is).
We eat at home exclusively these days. Except for birthdays, maybe.
rfriend73@reddit
Seriously, why is a veggie sub $14 ? It's insane it's bread and vegetables. Back in my day it was $1.99 special at Subway, old man rant..
AnastasiaNo70@reddit
That’s kooky as hell. No way I’d pay that. Subway sucks, anyway.
rfriend73@reddit
Oh, I haven't had Subway in 20 years. That was my go-to whej I was young and didn't have enough money. Local restaurants here charge $12 to $15.
C-romero80@reddit
Too many at once will bother me, like if there's a TV and people having a conversation then my kid comes to talk to me..I need something to turn off or down. I think that itself is normal but sometimes I get irritable with it and have to check myself.
sorieno@reddit (OP)
Complete overload of all the noise at once is very irritating 😠
otf_dyer_badass@reddit
Leaf blowing. Especially the last night weekend of the season, when it gets dark early, it never fails my neighbor incessantly leaf blows every last possible second of nice daylight.
sorieno@reddit (OP)
Our neighbours have a 6 year old who loves to help his dad in the garden so he now uses the leaf blower every ****** day 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Tough_Arm_2454@reddit
Agree and any yard machine... mower, riding mower, weed whacker, etc.
Tough_Arm_2454@reddit
Commercials are always too loud.
sorieno@reddit (OP)
Even just the intro music is so much louder than the dialogue
chartreuse_avocado@reddit
You still watch station provided TV?
Tough_Arm_2454@reddit
I do.
notedrive@reddit
I carry loop ear plugs with me. They cut the noise down enough that I’m bothered less by it and I can still hear what’s going on around me and talk.
Ok-Offer-541@reddit
….and too expensive ….too crowded….too much traffic….
pmbpro@reddit
These were always bothersome, so not an age thing:
Loud souped-up cars and motorcycles racing in the street. The only break I can get is in winter months (the benefits of heavy snow and ice, I guess). Otherwise, the moment it gets warmer, it’s the rest of the year.
Dogs constantly barking for hours at… nothing and everything, all over the neighbourhood, in apartments, wherever. Even when people are trying to sleep. But no-one is supposed to say or do anything (or train them to not disturb others), apparently. Every day, throughout the year.
charliefoxtrot9@reddit
What?
SuccessfulAd5806@reddit
I hate all the cars modified to make them louder. I live in a small town residential area, but 5 house in from a road with a 40 mph speed limit. Sometimes you can hear a pin drop. Other times it sounds like a drag race.
pmbpro@reddit
Agree with this. Like clockwork, every Spring, she moment it gets warm it starts. At every green light on the street, there’s at least one idiot. Continues all damn spring through summer. I’m on the top floor of a building, air conditioner running, windows closed, watching TV or listening to music, and I still hear them.
Vegaprime@reddit
Really hate mine in any drive thru. Have to roll down the window and the exaust reverbs off the wall.
IRadiateYou1999@reddit
We must be neighbors. I live close to the 40 mph road and those stupid rattle can cars make me crazy. Particularly since I know it’s just some crappy 4 cylinder and not a real muscle/performance car.
root_fifth_octave@reddit
It’s specific things for me. Loud car exhausts, people’s phone/tablet speakers, bass frequencies, somehow my neighbors’ loud-ass wind chimes, etc.
I figured it was some kind of noise anxiety.
ByWillAlone@reddit
Are you a parent?
I've felt that everything is too damned loud most of my life...it has nothing to do with getting older kat least not for me).
But my theory is: having children makes people temporarily immune to it - I never had kids so never gained the temporary immunity, but now all my friends who did have kids that are now out of the house are suddenly discovering they are losing their temporary immunity and are now starting to realize everything is too damned loud.
butterflygardyn@reddit
Yes. About 10 years ago. Can't go to the movies or concerts without ear plugs. Don't worry, this is just a phase on the way to needing hearing aids.
Lily_V_@reddit
Misophonia. I have it. Maybe you have it too.
daniel940@reddit
But also the volume is too low
c_r_a_s_i_a_n@reddit
TreaclePerfect4328@reddit
What!?
theladyshady@reddit
Yes, but I find my annoyance level is directly tied to how stressed I am. The more stress the more the noise grinds on me.
tangledweebledwevs@reddit
I was just gonna say this. It's actually one of the ways I use to be aware of how stressed out I'm getting.
Lower_Group_1171@reddit
Sennheiser soundprotex, you’re welcome
MarcusAurelius68@reddit
They should have named it SoundKotex.
beccaboo2u@reddit
I can't stand eating at restaurants now cuz they are sooooo loud. 😞
chartreuse_avocado@reddit
Would some soft wall surfaces or upholstered furniture kill them?
chartreuse_avocado@reddit
I had to stop going to the movies a few years ago because my ears felt assaulted! I never was a hang by the speakers at the club person but having never had kids why all the extreme screening and yelling and shrieking?
I just prefer sane, reasonable volume levels.
Reddiculusness@reddit
not for me LOL
well over 50% hearing loss from almost 40 years in industrial settings without hearing protection, and way too many times in the backyard with firearms .
I say "huh" a LOT , and listen to music in my truck louder than any passenger would be able to stand.
I_AM_ME-7@reddit
Dude I have tinnitus I don’t even know what silence is.
Reddiculusness@reddit
mine started in 2004 , nothing I hear is louder than it , even the machinery at work won't drown it out
tampaforfun@reddit
IslandJack76@reddit
My phone gives me daily notifications that my volume should be turned down, I’m taking a small break while cutting the grass, currently listening to Summer Madness by Kool and the Gang as I type this, volume all the way up. My eyes are a different story , night lights are are long strokes of brightness.
zedgrrrl@reddit
I can totally relate!
I got a hearing aid in 2021 but had to stop using it because it amplified my tinnitus from a constant hum to a full roar and regular outside noise became a cacophony.
tky@reddit
Loop makes ear plugs designed to gently reduce noise and I've found them to be excellent for turning the volume down just a pinch while not tuning out the entire world.
FnEddieDingle@reddit
No, I still drive with the stereo cranked
Robbudge@reddit
What ?,
brooklynbotz@reddit
I definitely did when I went to an NBA game a few months ago. Just constant loud noise. I couldn't even have a conversation with the person I was sitting next to.
Vegaprime@reddit
House full of guitars and drums. Dolby atmos component speaker home theater with 150" screen. Six speaker Boston acoustic system with sub in my car. I can use none of it. I was a medal head and now I need to bring earplugs, just incase, for long car rides because of road noise.
PositiveStress8888@reddit
Went to a restaurant for dinner, the music was dance club level loud, who the hell wants to have a sit down dinner with the music that loud?? We had to yell at eachother at the dinner table .... I could have stayed home and done that !
yeahwellokay@reddit
Yes, but I've always been in an everything is too damn loud stage of life.
IRadiateYou1999@reddit
The neighbors’ lawnmowers just destroy my peace. Every weekend. Thank the technology gods for noise canceling headphones!
Epicassion@reddit
Negative. Ear pods with noise cancellation. Jam the tunes and go about my business. Tinnitus is my constant companion but no issues with other noises.
lovebeinganasshole@reddit
Yes but then I have to ask myself why then do I have the TV so loud?
ClockWeasel@reddit
Hearing loss from damage, yup. Get yer ears checked and find out if noise reduction alone will help (for now)
ElJefe0218@reddit
There is just more noise today. More airplanes, trucks, cars, schools & kids, lawn mowers, outdoor music. It was a lot quieter growing up in the 70's.
Neat_Ad4712@reddit
Been there for 20 years, and I’m 56.
FacePunchMonday@reddit
No, that sort of thing doesnt bother me anymore.
Freedom_Floridan@reddit
No
Raskal37@reddit
Huey, is that you? HA wearer here, love taking them out at the end of the day, it's heaven!
this_kitty68@reddit
Yep. Especially at 8 am on Sunday morning. Don’t you people have ANYTHING better to do? STFU!
Organic_Mix2282@reddit
Ive been that way my whole, but my patience for has reached its end.
Inside-Wear5683@reddit
No
DeadMetalRazr@reddit
The only thing too loud is my tinnitus.
crashin70@reddit
Nope actually on the other side ...either nothing is loud enough or everything's the same damn volume leading to a dull roar!
Damn that tinnitus but those 180 concerts were awesome!
tysonarts@reddit
Me at 26 years old... 25 years ago
fridayimatwork@reddit
Except someone speaking to me in a crowded bar or restaurant
OldLifeguard-00@reddit
Also the “everything is too damn expensive” part of life too …
jseger9000@reddit
I'm not quite at that stage. But I'm gay and I am so sick and fucking tired of house music, the soundtrack to every gay event and party. Sweet Jesus, turn that shit off.
Substantial-Chip-102@reddit
YES!
Grouchy-Poetry-7927@reddit
I drive in silence
Subject-Ad-8055@reddit
yes just this past year i have noticed my hearing got worse, i did use ear plugs for the least 20 years.
Jerry-Lives22@reddit
Only when it’s abrupt and loud..like doors slamming. Loud bass funk in the trunk is annoying too or someone yelling in the ear at a concert or game
twas_brillig__@reddit
52 and I’m seeing some of that. Bass booming is the one that sends me into a tailspin. It’s like it makes me nervous system freak out.
scooterj54@reddit
I can’t do the bass sounds either, but it’s not a new thing for me. Even as a kid, I hated when the marching bands would go by in parades and the feeling I would get from those low bass drum sounds.
Kong_AZ@reddit
Yes but to be fair I've had tinnitus since a teen and certain tones feel like nails on a chalk board.
MaximumJones@reddit
speedincuzihave2poop@reddit
I like loud music. I have always liked loud music. The rest of the world though, yeah. They definitely need to shush a little.
