A classmate of mine popped up on Facebook and he’s… old

I hadn’t seen him since the early 90s and then he popped up on a mutual friend’s feed and, while he looks perfectly fine — even good for his age! — it was so weird to see him jump 35 years into the future. It freaked me out.
Does this ever happen to you? You don’t feel older until you see people your age and realize how much older they’ve gotten?
hair_10@reddit
I dated my wife in high school. We went our separate ways and then reconnected and got married. I hadn't seen her in 33 years. She's still gorgeous. :)
DirkDaring93@reddit
So whats the story on breakup and reconnection? What surprised you the most about how she changed over those years?
hair_10@reddit
The breakup... we were kids. Went off to college, tried the long distance thing, but we both had so much to learn and do. There's no way *I* (I won't speak for her) was ready for "forever" at that time. And when we split it didn't go well. I was an immature ass, and I didn't treat her very well.
Reconnection... after going our separate ways for 30+ years, we had both lived lives outside of each other. Both married, I had kids, living in different cities. While I was going through my divorce (after my ex's affair), I thought to myself "I really need to try and apologize for the way I acted as a kid". It's been my one big regret that I carried with me though life, because I am not that person any longer. I found her on FB, sent her a message, and basically said "I don't mean to intrude on your life and I don't expect a response, but I just wanted to say sorry for the person I was back then and how I treated you". I figured that was that. But, a short time later, she responded. We ended up talking on the phone that night and things just evolved from there. That was 7 years ago this week. We're now married and I'm probably the happiest I've been in my adult life.
What surprised me was easy it was to reconnect with her. It was like no time had passed and we just kind of fell back into it. As far as how she's changed, she used to be a quiet, reserved, almost naive girl in high school. Now she's a strong independent woman who definitely has a voice... and I love that about her.

Lol. She doesn't use reddit.

For all of those going on about the fat, bald popular football player and his now fat, wrinkled "cheerleader" wife: Admit that it makes you feel good to see them age poorly. This seems to be one of the top reasons people attend high school reunions. Lots of shit talking and gossip about people's looks.
Cytwytever@reddit
Girls that barely spoke to me in high school were all hugs and smiles at my 30th reunion. It was weird.

Yep, an ex girlfriend I last saw in 96. In my minds eye she is still presenting as 19. Saw her in a work video this year at age 49 and fuck was my mind blown! Still looks like her and she looks good, but had a hard time reconciling her age in my head.

Went to a Death Cab for Cutie concert and was shocked when Ben Gibbard came out and had grey hair.
Legitimate_Working11@reddit
Every time I go to a concert I realize the venue is full of old people, and that I fit in.
flyboy_za@reddit
I thought this at a Pixies gig back in 2014, and then the older crowd (I was a young 37 and there were plenty in their mid 50s there) went absolutely apeshit with booze and what I assume were many drugs, and had the psychedelic time of their lives at the show.
Apparently the party doesn't have to stop as you level up. Which was part comforting, part terrifying.

I saw a picture of a boyfriend from high school and he looks like Dumbledore now.

I'm super curious to see what my hs boyfriend looks like now. Why? I have no idea. He's not on any social media though so I could walk right past him and never know.

This happened to me with BillieJoe Armstrong: I legit had a mini midlife spiral a couple years ago when I saw a new Green Day video- they had fallen off my radar 15-20 years ago. They are IN THEIR FIFTIES! Then of course I realised that I too was about to turn 50. WTF!!
Logintheroad@reddit
He looks great though! I try to catch Green day live as much as possible. They have so much energy and enthusiasm for their fan. Love them.
(Also a very early 70's baby.)
believe_in_dog@reddit
He does look great! I’m a 75er and always had a crush on on him haha. Actually, seeing him still kicking butt inspired me to learn ukelele and get back into art/ writing. And Saviors completely pulled me -and my family!- back into Green Day. We wanted to go to the Saviors tour but were out of town when they played in Toronto. My 10 year old loves them!
IranticBehaviour@reddit
Haha. He and Eminem are both '72 babies, so very slightly younger than I am. And, I look a little younger than I am (as long as I stay clean-shaven or dye the beard, lol, the profusion of grey and white whiskers adds 10 years), but those guys look pretty great for their age.
believe_in_dog@reddit
I’m a 75er, so I always looked at them as my bratty older brothers 😂. The do look great!

Watermelon_Sugar44@reddit
My brothers are old and I only see them on Facebook. Even my younger brother is old. This is what helps me accept the lines on my face and my wrinkles under my chin. People my age look at me like I'm attractive and they tell me I'm attractive. I'm a little above average for a woman who doesn't get fillers, botox or anything else done to my face. I accept it. I focus on being grateful to be healthy and alive. I think working in healthcare helps me frame getting older with a sense of gratitude. So many people don't get the opportunity to stay alive this long.

Saw a photo last year of the Football Captain and his wife, the Cheerleader. They were gorgeous in HS!
He’s morbidly obese and bald now, looks at least 75. She’s also pretty heavy set (no judgement) and her face just looks like … you know that phrase “it’s not the years, it’s the mileage?” That. They both look mid-seventies.
We all turned 50 in the last 90 days. I was shocked. Showed some friends who had no idea who they were. They’re unrecognizable now.
sipperphoto@reddit
That's how they all turned out. All the hot girls look wrecked, and the very average girls from HS look pretty good. The dudes are either in halfway decent shape or old, fat, and bald.
Kodiak01@reddit
Growing up, there was a guy a few years older than me that had the quintessential "Ladies Man" thing going. He was constantly with one girl after another. He was good looking, in shape and outgoing.
Last picture I saw of him was several years ago; he had also become morbidly obese almost to the point of reminding me of the WoW guy from South Park. No clue about his wife. He didn't have mileage, he had an odometer that flipped at least twice.
changelingcd@reddit
It's funny when you see their photo on FB and think "Gosh, they really aged well" and then realize that's their kid.
zephyrthewonderdog@reddit
Mate went to an army regiment reunion. He said he walked in and it was a bunch of ‘fat old men with grey hair’. He remembered them all as 20yr old recruits. Then realised he appeared exactly the same to them. Another old ex soldier.
Told me he wasn’t going to anymore ‘fucking shit military reunions’ as it depressed him for weeks. Said he should have spent the day with his grandkids instead.
We had a laugh at how angry he got about it. He realised it was irrational but it still hit home.
Kodiak01@reddit
I know several old vets that actually bring the grandkids to the VFW and Legion with them. They sit together off to one side, sip sodas and tell funny stories to the kids while playing checkers.
Dadaballadely@reddit
For me it's seeing someone in the street I think I recognise from school or college then suddenly realising that the person I'm looking at is probably 20 years too young to be the person I thought it was.
Kodiak01@reddit
75er. I showed my wife current pictures of two women I went to early elementary school with. One of them not only looked 70 years old instead of 50, she looked almost like that in another photo a decade older! The other, she could honestly pass for early-mid 30s with ease.
I don't really see many pictures of others otherwise as I tend to stay away from Instabook, Facespace and the like as much as possible.

I'm divorced and single now, so I get some nice guys asking for my phone number, despite turning 60 this year.
I realized I've been declining their requests because 'they're all so old'. Well, shoot girl, you ain't no spring chicken!
oopswhat1974@reddit
This past weekend I saw a friend of mine walking down the street with what I presumed was an elderly gray-bearded man -maybe a neighbor, or a friend of his dad's? Thin, looked almost frail-ish maybe? I was wracking my brain doing "who is that old man walking with Bob?"
I got up close and realized "holy shit that's _____ " (an old friend of ours - meaning known a long time, not as in age old). That... Struck me.

We had a group of mean girls who would ridicule anyone who didn't spend every free hour at local tanning salons. I bumped into one of them a few years ago. Her skin was trashed, alligator hide, and all I could think was I'm glad I let my pale white skin remain pale.

I moved away from the city I went to college in and swore I'd never return. Life happened and ended up back here about 8 years ago. I do community outreach for a large non-profit so I interact with a lot of people on a daily basis and about 1-2 times a year I bump into someone I used to know back in the 80's. I then need to do quick mental calculations to see if the overweight and bald guy I'm talking to was the same guy that was wiry and had long flowing heavy metal hair that I used to work with or that sat next to me in class.
Public-Significance7@reddit
Seen my 20th high school reunion photos and the number of guys I knew back then that are now bald was disturbing...the women seemed to be the ones that got fat. Like really fat.

One of mine just did the opposite. He went quiet for a few months. Always a quirky looking guy. That's better than what happened with my friend.
I hadn't seen him in person for nearly two decades, and then it seems he was stage 4. His fb avatar was him. Granted it was him in a hospital bed with the air tube to his nose, but it was him.
