Kids paying rent?

It was, but it was a great motivator to move out. Within a year I dropped out of college and got a job with the forest service on a wilderness trail crew that came with cheap employee housing. One of my favorite jobs ever and one that gave me a great work ethic and love for the outdoors.

I started paying rent when I moved back from college during the summer. $400 a month in 1985. My first post-college apartment was $425 for a two bedroom. A great motivator to get out.

Oh yea, we had a crew of five of us that hung out in the morning before class in high school. I casually went out with two of the girls, one of them I had a crush on. At my 20 year class reunion I learned through the grapevine she was living a disaster of a life. Married and divorced four times and five kids. Yikes.

I had a big bash for my 50th and as I approach the next big one, my gf said we should just do a nice long trip to Thailand together. It’s hard to disagree with that. I love Thai food!

Yea, the constant fighting of parents was rough and unfortunately shaped the way I did relationships until I finally did mdma and emdr therapy much later in life. Man I wish I had found the solution earlier. My mom was the abuser of my step-dad (bio dad died when I was four) and it made me terrified to make a woman angry. I did everything to be the people pleaser and as a result, damned every relationship I had. 15+ relationships and three divorces before finally learning to be a real human who could express my own wants, needs and desires. What a shitshow.

He would be a good one. I grew up in a town he spent a lot of time in and would hear stories of him popping into a local bar and playing unscheduled. He sounded very down to earth.

I have a huge amount of respect for his work. The lyrics of [Right Where It Belongs](https://youtu.be/J0gs9qWbNa8?si=) hit me at a moment in my life of great impact and helped me get a perspective I deeply needed.

I found a few different outs. In 2012 I started volunteering as a firefighter as a side gig to the job I hated. In 2014 I went part time at work so I could volunteer more. In 2020 I changed careers and became a paramedic and left the job I hated. The money sucks, but I love my life.

I was always in bed by 10, 10:30 at the latest until one wild night at 49 at burning man. I discovered EDM and now I’ve been to roughly 200 shows in the last decade… I’ve watched the sunrise at EDC-LV, I’ve flown to Ibiza just to see my Gfs favorite artist, and I’ve stayed up until 2am more in my 50s than I ever did in my 20s.

Tuesday night it was dancing to David Guetta at Red Rocks in a snow storm. Wednesday night it was air frying some wings and watching Survivor with my girlfriend. Sunday it’ll be going to a play with her two adult kids. Next Friday it’ll be dancing at The Junkyard to Armin Van Buuren. I’m 59, I’m not dead yet. I’m still plenty alive to enjoy dancing and going out.

3.2% alcohol beer bars where we could drink at 18. It’s wild to me that there’s now this weird three year gap where adults don’t have bars they can go to. Now don’t get me wrong, the roads are a hell of a lot safer because they’re closed, but damn, I can’t even imagine how different things are now for 18-20 year olds than when I was 18. I loved going to bars when I was 18-20.

As a paramedic who was an EMT both straight out of college decades ago and then more recently in 2017 before becoming a medic, if you don’t use it, you lose it. Obtaining your EMT is one thing, but unless you work with it for a couple years, your skills will be disappointing. Working in the field builds and broadens skills. Depending on call volume, one to three years is adequate.

This isn’t a competition… for me, it’s a marathon, it’s about endurance. I can’t stand going without hot showers, so after my first year at burning man without a hot shower, I bought a Coleman propane hot water heater. That was my big random thing. Didn’t use it again other than camping and burns until my boiler/hot water heater bit the dust and it took two weeks to get the parts for it. Omg, was my wife happy. Sometimes it’s the little things that maintain morale that matter. She didn’t care that we had to heat with wood for two weeks; for her, hot showers made it survivable and kept us from having to pay for a hotel.

The waterbed was all about rhythm. You had to move with the wave or it totally threw you off. No changing tempo or you’d have the bottom drop out right when you were trying to move in.

Oh yes, that time the heater died and you didn’t realize it for a few days until you were laying in bed shivering and just couldn’t get warm. That’s when the fun of draining the whole thing, replacing the heater, and then refilling it all over again.

Yes, my first marriage involved a water bed. Holy crap, it was a whole different experience of timing and rhythm. Finally we moved and decided to replace the waterbed mattress with a traditional mattress. Total game changer. But I still had my 12 drawer under dresser.
