Does anyone else not like tv and movies these days?

I start watching something and 3 episodes in I’m like “nah”. And I haven’t been to a movie theater in probably 2 years.
Mi-Infidel@reddit
To many agendas being pushed now days.
Monkeydad1234@reddit
I don’t watch tv news, have no idea what series are good any more and can never find a movie I want to watch.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
Count me in with "I don't watch t.v. news." I did years ago. Not now.
Monkeydad1234@reddit
It doesn’t matter what side of the political fence you may be on, getting objective reporting is impossible.
DonutCapitalism@reddit
I got into Anime in 2020 and my wife joined me in 2022. We love it. So much better stories than what most of Hollywood has put out.
No-Leg-3298@reddit
I watch a lot of British shows. Although, I find Apple TV shows to be more original and relevant to middle aged people. LOL
Quix66@reddit
Me. Just seem to take a lot of effort nowadays.
TatlinsTower@reddit
Guys, you all sound like our grandparents! There’s so much good tv out there from the last few years, jeez. Severance, Andor, Hacks, Widow’s Bay, Pluribus, Ted Lasso, Heated Rivalry, Silo, Slow Horses, Bad Sisters, Derry Girls, The Bear, Insecure, The Last of Us, Beef, Mare of Easttown, Peaky Blinders, The Americans, The Diplomat, Parks & Rec, Mr. Robot, Chernobyl, Our Flag Means Death, Dark, Atlanta, Reservation Dogs, The Queen’s Gambit, Catastrophe, etc. etc. If you can’t find something you like these days, I think the problem might be y’all, not tv.
Cool_Lingonberry_399@reddit
Consume slop. Get excited for more slop....

SparksWood71@reddit
What's that's grandpa?
CaughtALiteSneez@reddit
Wow, we could hang out and watch TV together, excellent selection
I haven’t seen Atlanta yet, guess I need to check it out
TatlinsTower@reddit
It’s good! Especially if you like stuff like Widow’s Bay, which I’m loving so far. (Hiro Murai directed episodes of both). For me, I’m not that concerned with genre, I just want strong writing, complex characters, and great acting. Atlanta delivers on all of those, imo.
Since we seem to have similar taste, anything not on the list I posted that you recommend?
CaughtALiteSneez@reddit
Obsessed with Widow’s Bay!
That’s hard as you have listed my catalogue.
Barry - HBO, it has Stephen Root from Widow’s Bay and is also a dark comedy
What We Do In The Shadows - since you like Our Flag Means Death
The Great - weird clever humor, but not historically accurate at all
Will see if I can think of others…
SparksWood71@reddit
Widows Bay is so good! I have been re-watching the Americans ( yet another fantastic modern series ) and so I'm always sure to watch widows Bay right after
CaughtALiteSneez@reddit
Once every couple of years I do an Americans rewatch, it’s one of my comfort shows.
Widows Bay is also strangely comforting as it reminds me of a different time, but I watched the latest episode before bed and that turned into some weird dreams. 😆
SparksWood71@reddit
Hah! Same! On all accounts. Apparently each episode is a nod to another horror movie or book. I caught some of them, Wicker Man, The Shining, Jaws.
brokencappy@reddit
The additional problem is that I refuse to subscribe to 11 different platforms, figure out which show is on which, figure out which series is completely out (binge watch) and which one I have to force myself to tune into week-by-week to catch the latest episode. And that’s when the show is really original and not reheated same old or rebooted nostalgia.
Too much work and I already work enough.
TheHandsOfFate@reddit
I 100% agree with you about TV. I have nostalgia for old shows and still watch some but so much old TV is very formulaic and heavily reuses plots and character types to get those 22 episode seasons.
Correct_Security_742@reddit
Yes but only Asian tv and movies. I recommend 100 % over Western shows and movies currently. I have 2 apps Viki and IQIYI. The writing, the universes are excellent. So much originality, humor, action, romance, Bl romance. It's everything.
TinyWeird878@reddit
We got an Android box that gives us access to every channel in the world ... and I couldn't be bothered. Hubby loves it, though.
Trh2013@reddit
Tv now has so many hidden ads/product placement. I miss the lessons we learned from sitcoms in the 80s and 90s. And most movies made in the last 10 years are torture to me. My wife still watches a ton of movies. I just watch documentaries and youtube creators that teach me things.
Dark_Tint@reddit
I watch hockey and one series on the history channel that’s it. I can’t tell you the last time I watched a movie or even wanted to.
SparksWood71@reddit
We're living to another golden age of film and TV.

This sub never cease to make me feel young.
SparksWood71@reddit
Same! Half the posts here are bitching about younger people, how their bodies are breaking down, and incessantly yelling at clouds.
Aisling207@reddit
I swear the 50 year olds posting on here act like they’re more decrepit than the 80 year olds I know in real life.
SparksWood71@reddit
Preach! We are not that old! At least a lot of us aren't.
TheFonzDeLeon@reddit
These threads show that it isn't age that makes you old, it's mindset. People like familiarity, especially as they get older and pop culture stops resembling what they liked, so they just assume it's not them and that pop culture sucks now. Sorry, our parents thought our music and movies were dumb, and their parents thought theirs was dumb, and so on... I have the survivorship bias argument about once a year with older relatives.
SparksWood71@reddit
Exactly this. My grandpa used to joke about this in the 80's. "I don't understand this racket you guys call music today, but our parents thought jazz and swing was crazy, so I guess that just makes me old" He was in his 80's.
These people think entertainment sucks today because they got old before their time. I can't imagine what life is going to be like for them as actual old people.
7eregrine@reddit
There's no good music today, my 75 year old FIL says while listening to Frankie Vallie.
There is. .you just stopped looking for it.
SparksWood71@reddit
Which is endearing in a 75 year old. In people in their 50's, it's just sad.
TheFonzDeLeon@reddit
I let my 95 y.o. FIL get away with complaining about movies even after I tell him he just doesn't remember all of the garbage films they don't show on Turner Classics.
prettyedge411@reddit
I love discovering new shows. American tv is boring, cringe and it's trying to hard to attract the Gen Z. I find lots of good BBC or Canadian tv shows these days. I pay for PBS passport and if you don't mind subtitles they have great dramas.
Logintheroad@reddit
Have you watched How to Get to Heaven from Belfast? It's hilarious.
prettyedge411@reddit
Loved it. The creator of Derry Girls created it. Another really good show. I teared up at the series finale.
SparksWood71@reddit
How have you missed so many excellent American shows? Handmaids Tale? For all Mankind? The Pitt? Breaking Bad? We are literally in a second golden age of Television.
Do you subscribe to anything?
7eregrine@reddit
Scrubs, Cougar Town, Modern Family, Game of Thrones.
Fucking golden age.
markallanholley@reddit
Bridgerton, Downton Abbey, Umbrella Academy, Brooklyn 99, Parks & Rec, Letterkenny...
RetireWithoutBorders@reddit
To be honest, the last TV show I really liked was 24. And even that got old.
Last November, as a graduation gift, my wife took our son to Asia for three weeks. They went to Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan. I had to stay home, because our 16-year-old dog needs daily care and we can’t board her.
During the three weeks they were gone the TV didn’t go on once.
huron9000@reddit
Nah, TV is better than ever.
JerseyTeacher78@reddit

JerseyTeacher78@reddit
I like TV and movies that I can watch without being forced to see ads every 8 minutes.
ShivaFatalis@reddit
There are still plenty of good TV shows and movies in recent times. If nothing is ever holding your attention, or you're not able to enjoy anything out there, I would start examining some other things. Are you depressed? Are you stuck in a dopamine loop? Undiagnosed ADHD?
Hot-Assistant-4540@reddit
Not liking current tv and movie offerings doesn’t signify a mental health issue. Geez
ShivaFatalis@reddit
It can. It's not normal for someone to not be able to find anything they enjoy anywhere like that. There's so much TV and movie content, that it would be really strange not to find things that are enjoyable.
AuthorIndieCindy@reddit
I miss destination tv. Like Seinfeld and Friends. St. Elsewhere and the sunday night movie. New shows premiered in the fall. It was reliable. Promotion for new movies and shows is limited you donøt even know where to find it.
7eregrine@reddit
Have you watched anything recently?
AuthorIndieCindy@reddit
Not really. The only channel i know 181 TLC. My 600lb life is on now. Just on for the noise
freerangeXkid@reddit
TV used to be a shared social experience. We may not have all been in the same room watching something, but we were all watching it. Then the next day in classes and by the water cooler we'd chat about it. I think The Sopranos was the last appointment TV show. Maybe Breaking Bad to a lesser extent
TV just makes me angry now. But then that could just be my age
FoxPowerful4230@reddit
I don’t even turn the tv on anymore unless there’s a baseball or football game I’m genuinely interested in watching. I couldn’t care less about whatever bullshit programming they’re using to sell bullshit products.
Eazy12345678@reddit
tv and movies are great. escape from reality
Apart_Culture_3564@reddit
I love TV these days, it’s miles better than TV was in ye olden times - there’s a show for every taste.
Movies are another story. I think I have seen maybe 4 movies in the theater in the last 5 years. Very very tired of the whole superhero genre.
Aisling207@reddit
Oh my god, yes, so sick of the comic book/superhero genre! Occasionally an interesting movie comes out, but more often than not it’s either direct to streaming, or plays for like 1-2 weeks before being supplanted by some kind of “Blowed Up!” type movie.
gigilovesgsds@reddit
Hollyweird needs to read a book. So many books would make good movies.
Aisling207@reddit
There are tons and tons of movies made from books. Here’s a list just from 2025. The problem is that they don’t get enough time in theaters and/or they go right to streaming.

Scoobysnax1976@reddit
I am over Star Wars, Star Trek, and the marvel universe. Now that the Boys is done I need a new genre.
I will keep watching Invincible though.
No_Height_8075@reddit
I don't care for the look of new movies and TV. It's too cold and grayish. It's depressing and it makes me not care about any of the characters. It makes mea bit uncomfortable tbh.
itstrueitellyou@reddit
That's why I've been watching foreign shows. Death in Paradise is a British comedic cop show set on a Caribbean island. The views and colors are spectacular.
Beneficial_Law_5720@reddit
British is the way!! I have so many great shows I watch on Britbox or Acorn.
Beneficial_Law_5720@reddit
P.s. Death in paradise is one of them…😁
Beneficial_Law_5720@reddit
P.s. Death in paradise is one of them…😁
Rich_Group_8997@reddit
Yup. I give most TV shows insufferable and movies are pure torture for me because i feel like there all too dark, too long and way way way too loud. I will watch documentaries, random explainer videos on YouTube, and some other random stuff. But don't ask me about the latest TV series or movie. 🤷🏾♀️
BigJLov3@reddit
It's hard for me to find something I'm interested in. I'm only following a few series now, and not picking anything new up. And since it's all on streaming, I can just take months or even years off, then binge a six or eight episode season in a day.
I used to be a science fiction fan, but all the franchisees have been ruined, and everything new is just a re-skin of what I've seen before. There is much more imaginative content on YouTube, anyway. It's more pure, not filtered and diluted by studio notes and network standards, though still limited by bullshit censorship.
gigilovesgsds@reddit
And the unstoppable ads.
IHadTacosYesterday@reddit
My attention span for movies and TV has dropped DRAMATICALLY.
For some reason, I seem to be way more interested in non-fiction now. Fiction seems wack to me. I know all the tropes. All the plot twists. All the formulas.
Only once in a blue moon will I watch something that really piques my interest. Still, even if it's something I'm really into, if the running time is more than 95 minutes or so, I will probably have to watch it in 2 parts.
I'm the total opposite of somebody that can binge watch a bunch of TV shows while couch rotting. I can't do that.
I'm more likely to watch a podcast or something on YouTube, but even then, I get bored after about 25 minutes.
I think I have mild Anhedonia. I know it's not super bad, because people with it really bad don't even enjoy good tasting food which seems absolutely insane to me. I still love eating good tasting food.
gigilovesgsds@reddit
Do you also love Metallica. If so, you’re my twin.

RadioCaroline721@reddit
There is no imagination. The writing and all of the commercials….you get 20 minutes of story and 10 minutes of ads. Dont get me started on the news!
Rab1dus@reddit
Outside of a handful of exceptions. Network TV died 15 or so years ago. I haven't watched a show with ads in ages.
BoleteD@reddit
Been watching Chinese Dramas. Silly, fun & culturally revealing.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
In a similar vein, my husband & got into French police dramas.
itstrueitellyou@reddit
I prefer police comedies, I'm currently watching Carpe Diem which is a murder mystery solved by an exconvict lawyer in Nice (which looks absolutely breathtaking), France.
fredout1968@reddit
I watch old movies over and over.. They were just better. Real acting, real stunts, not worrying about offending everyone all the time. I am not sure that it's the movies or the actual olden times that I yearn for..
Scoobysnax1976@reddit
I have been on a 90s kick lately. Prince of Thieves doesn’t hold up to my memories. L.A Confidential on the other hand is still an amazing movie.

How is that any different than any other era?
Just in 1986 you had The Smiths' The Queen Is Dead, R.E.M.'s - Lifes Rich Pageant, Hüsker Dü's Candy Apple Grey and Cocteau Twins' - Victorialand... but mainstream radio was busy playing crap like "That's What Friends Are For", "The Greatest Love of All", "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.", "Glory of Love", "You Give Love a Bad Name", "Dancing on the Ceiling", "Danger Zone" and Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time",
Automatic-Evidence26@reddit
I thought we were talking TV and Movies ... all those songs you are dismissing sold MILLIONS of copies and were top 40 hits ... what is your point ?
Music you liked was NOT popular while music you despised was popular to your dismay ?
bigkenw@reddit
If you liked those, you should watch The Legend of Vox Machina. From the same people that made Mighty Nein.
Automatic-Evidence26@reddit
THAT was the other I could NOT remember ... yeahy fantastic ... waiting for the next season
McSmackthe1st@reddit
When they adapt a book things seem to be better. Take “Project Hail Mary”, that’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. I loved it. When….when….Hollywood is “allowed” to be original, you tend to get a much better show or movie.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
Agreed with Project Hail Mary. It was the first film I had seen in the theater since "Barbie".
bigkenw@reddit
I find that Apple TV+ has the most shows that interest me. Most are original. I would take a look.
I have a hard time getting into new shows myself. My problem is I start a show, and if I don't binge it, ai forget to watch.
The last shows I watched week to week were Star Trek Picard and Starfleet Academy. Academy was cancelled for all the wrong reasons.
Some Anime has grabbed me, but it can't be stupid high school stuff because it feels dumbed down always always seems like creepy old dudes made it.
But if you are into Animation:
In terms of movies, Project Hail Mary was great. And as a card carrying GenX member, I plan to see Masters of the Universe.
RDeckNexus6@reddit
Academy cancelled for all the wrong reasons…nah it was just horrible crap…good riddance
bigkenw@reddit
That's just like, your opinion.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
I have no skin in this argument but am a Star Trek fan. On YouTube channels (looking @ you The Critical Drinker) they trashed "Starfleet Academy" which I did not watch.
In your opinion, what reasons do you cite as to why it should have been canceled. Not asking to argue.
armitage75@reddit
You NEED to be watching Widows Bay. Only 5 episodes out but so far as good as anything AppleTV have done.
bigkenw@reddit
Will take a look!
Cool_Lingonberry_399@reddit
I don't think you watch much anime 🙄
bigkenw@reddit
I actually do, but didn't list anything other than Solo Leveling.
CB_Chuckles@reddit
The last two movies I saw in the theaters was Superman and the female led Ghostbusters. I’m old enough that anything longer than 2 hours requires a pee break and I hate missing anything so I’d rather wait for a pausable home media release. OTH, I still watch TV regularly, although that’s mostly anime with the occasional live action drama thrown in.
dchusband@reddit
Female Ghostbusters? I’m so sorry.
How long were you in therapy?
Aisling207@reddit
🥱
Inevitable-Lock5973@reddit
Haven’t seen a new movie in probably 10 and I couldn’t even tell you what’s on TV anymore. Apart from like certain franchises, I always watch which would be like House of the Dragon or Lord of the Rings stuff other than that no idea it just everything looks cheap and cheesy especially on broadcast TV- NBC, Peacock CBS that kind of channel it just looks like recycled garbage.
CountHonorius@reddit
Tubi or Pluto, that's the answer. Not paying a nickel for Hulu or Disney, much less Netflix.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
To quote the Mandalorian: "This is the Way." :)
CountHonorius@reddit
Despise it and the 'fandom' that's generated around each series. Discovering old shows (2013-2015) on Tubi when TV was still worth watching.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
Same here. Shout out to Tubi. I am at the end of Season 5 out 0f 14 of "Knots Landing." I had not watched one episode of it when it was popular. My mother watched all of "Dallas" though.
SlammaJammin@reddit
As part of my physical therapy for recovering after Long Covid, I was advised to take a walk outside every day, even when the weather is cold and wet. I get more interestingness from a walk four blocks from home than I do from most of what’s on TV these days. Because outside is always changing, evolving, growing. Along with slowly improving balance, I’ve slowed down my power of observation and seen more really fascinating stuff since taking up this habit.
TV isn't nearly as enticing as it used to be.
girlpaint@reddit
Totally this
DavePHofJax@reddit
At this stage, I refuse to go to the theaters. People are rude and someone is always on their phone, even when it's announced to put it on silent. It's not just the young kids but adults as well.
No_Button_1750@reddit
Was talking with my husband about this recently. Streaming has in no way improved the quality of what is available to view. Movies are of worse quality than what they used to be even five or ten years ago. (Could Hollywood become totally irrelevant??). We have too many choices available to us and it’s just a sea of average slop with the occasional gem that is gripping, really funny or emotional.
We still enjoy going to the movies but rarely do we walk out and say “wow that was so good”. It’s a shame. Luckily our local movie theatre regularly replays older movies so I can watch Jaws for the first time lol. Top Gun 40th anniversary is coming up and they have plenty of others from the 70’s-00’s. It’s great.
Madness970@reddit
We used to have about 35k movies to pick from when Netflix started its mail order dvd program. Now all streaming services combined do not have that many to choose from. Netflix has about 8k now.
No_Button_1750@reddit
I just counted and we have NINE streaming services (almost all are free through our mobile phone or internet plan) but I said to my husband when we relocate back to our home country from the US we should choose one, or none, and see what, if any, difference we see. This will be primarily to save some money.
We also won’t be going to the movies because it’s between $40-100 and that’s plain ridiculous. So bye bye movies too.
My husband did another two year overseas posting and never got a TV. He said he watched YouTube and now he’s really even bothered if we watch anything on TV/streaming.
iwantmy-2dollars@reddit
I started taking Singular for my allergies and the vivid technicolor dreams I have every night are way more entertaining than 80% of new movies and tv.
KimBrrr1975@reddit
It's very different living in the streaming age, sometimes I like it, often I don't. We watch a few shows that we enjoy, and go to maybe 2 movies a year. Definitely going to see The Odyssey this summer. I don't like starting new streaming shows because so often they either get canceled without an ending or it takes them 2 years to produce 6 episodes. So often we will wait to start until a show at least has staying power. But I hate that we have to re-watch to remember what happened every time a new season comes out because of how much time it takes. I miss the "Shows are on Sept-May" schedule 😂
Cysteine_Chapel64@reddit
I really liked Alien Earth and want to see the next season of it. I like Jeopardy. Since cord cutting I do miss BookTV and the author/politician interviews that were more easily available. I can still see Nature/cooking shows/local restaurants through PBS.
The networks I mostly really don't miss. The last show Discovery had that I really kept up with was MythBusters.
Movies I'll still go to but the last I went to was Frankenstein last year. I might wait for Project Hail Mary to show up streaming.
RBI-Man@reddit
I don't either. I can watch game shows such as "The Price Is Right," "Family Feud," "Jeopardy," and "Wheel of Fortune." Sports. But, that is about it. The comedies don't make me laugh, and haven't for years. I find my self going back to shows that I watched as a kid that I was too young to understand. But, I now notice errors in a lot of those (continuity, plot, shadows from microphones, etc.). Occasionally, I'll find a movie that keeps my interest. But, not often.
Cysteine_Chapel64@reddit
Having to think about it Archer's probably the last show I laughed at that was kind of a comedy but not really.
violet715@reddit
I haven’t been to the movies since 2014. I find myself re-watching old shows I used to like. The only newer stuff I watch is Netflix crime documentaries.
JohnWoosDoveGuy@reddit
It's a quantity vs quality issue now. Too many services and not enough ideas.
Sweaty_Pitch_2880@reddit
Agreed, and I might be on my recent favorite shouting at the clouds topic here (ai / automated culture), but it’s worth noting the degree to which streaming content is influenced by analytics data vs. actual human thought.
This comment based on the premise that Netflix produces shows in a highly programmatic way - the plots, themes, writing, actors cast, etc. are all based on big data that indicates probability for mass appeal. It optimizes the product for their business success, while draining it of all nutritional value for us the hungry (human) customers.
Full disclosure - this shout at the clouds is based on information (about “programmatic” content) I learned from a source I can’t recall several years ago, so it could be flawed, but it seems to track with what I see as a continued downward spiral into total schlock on Netflix et al over the same period.
My advice to all humans - read a book or play a board game instead.
JohnWoosDoveGuy@reddit
Absolutely. Coupled with the fact that generally a script had to be compelling and adaptable to gain traction at studio. This idea really played out when twin movies became a thing in the nineties and we suddenly had two Robin Hood movies or two comet movies. The ideas were good enough enter the public consciousness and gain popularity by word of mouth. Now algorithmic propaganda will try to tell you what you are going to enjoy using a mixture of big data and cultural nostalgia. Creatively we're just photocopying photocopies to fill space.
Sweaty_Pitch_2880@reddit
Interesting, I’d never heard of the twin movies phenomenon. It’s a great supporting point of evidence to the algorithmic method of today… I’m compelled to research more to enhance my future rants on topic 🤣
I recently heard someone credible in the music biz (whom I also cannot cite accurately at the moment) say that a new punk movement is imminent, and that they have faith it will restore public interest in air quotes real art… here’s to hoping my Gen X brethren!
ParagraphGrrl@reddit
I think TV is so much better than when we were young! There is plenty of good stuff, although I agree it is frustrating that it is scattered around a bunch of different services and it can be hard to find out about new series. Right now I am watching The Boroughs, Rivals, and The Testaments and enjoying them. The Pitt and The Gilded Age are also faves. If you like the old-school episodic series, the networks are still doing those--the remake of Matlock with Kathy Bates is excellent. And that's not even mentioning the slightly older stuff I missed and hope to get around to because it's been just such a firehose of content.
Movies are definitely thinner on the ground due to changes in the film economy but there is still stuff to watch. I loved Barbie and Oppenheimer when they came out a couple of years ago and while Sinners was not my thing it was so worth watching. MichaeI B. Jordan did an extraordinary job playing two nearly-identical characters so distinctly that I never got confused as to who was in a given scene, and I am someone who can't keep soldiers played by completely different actors straight in the average war movie. I am looking forward to the Christopher Nolan Odyssey this summer (don't know if it will be good or bad, but it's guaranteed interesting...)
Skid-Vicious@reddit
Only because I have a jailbroken streamer and Stremio.
Way too many streamer studio series start off good and then it becomes like WTF happened they just fell apart, even The Boys completely went to shit after starting off so good.
One series I can’t recommend enough and have rewatched way too many times is Ted Lasso. Can’t praise it enough. Only 3 seasons were planned and the wrap is perfect. So popular that they’re filming an additional series and I really hope it doesn’t fall apart too.
But yeah, mostly history and documentaries.
superfedupguy@reddit
I mean, 90 percent of it has always been crap. Stuff I used to love like Doctor Who and Star Trek has been destroyed by woke ideology. I did enjoy Outlander quite a lot, The Gilded Age too, of somewhat recent stuff. I mostly watch old stuff though. Same with music. The Who sound great in Atmos.

Anyone who claims Star Trek has been destroyed by woke ideology can’t be taken seriously. Star Trek has always been woke. You would’ve been one of those assholes in the ‘60s complaining to the FCC when Trek showed the first interracial kiss on TV.
superfedupguy@reddit
Pushing trans madness and mutilation on our kids is not the same as an interracial kiss.

I would just like to watch something without a main character struggling with acceptance of their homosexuality.
even just being gay without the resistance would be refreshing

Yes. So I started watching Kdramas. They are almost always so well written. I really recommend Reply 1988 as a intro to Kdramas if you haven’t seen it/them.

You get to a certain point in life where you realize everything has been done before. For me, weirdly enough, it was almost the moment I turned 50.
ImmediateCan4099@reddit (OP)
Do you think that’s true about music?
OccamsYoyo@reddit
Less so with music personally, but I think that’s partly bc I’m more interested in music than movies and TV.
JulesSherlock@reddit
Yes, me - Because it all sucks. Where are the good writers and directors? The stories are miserable and bad now.
7eregrine@reddit
You're missing out on a lot of great stuff.
JulesSherlock@reddit
Where do I find this great stuff? I do watch a lot of TV and movies so I don’t feel like I’m missing it, it’s just not good. I usually give a series the first episode and a movie 15-30 minutes to hook me. There is an abundance of poorly written or re-hashed material.
7eregrine@reddit
That's part of your problem then. Cougar Town is a prime example of a show that LOL funny, but you wouldn't watch because a) the title. And B) the first episodes were ok, buy this shit really hit its stride after they and is easily one if the funniest things I've seen in TV. My sense of humor had definitely changed over the years. Very little in TV makes me laugh these days.
This show is funny and very well written.
Likewise, Scrubs. Coincidentally produced by the same guy. You might have given up after Ep 1. There's some bathroom and sex humor that sometimes feels a little juvenile. But I havent LOL'ed at any TV show ever... Like literally OUT LOUD... more. I've rewatched it twice. On top of that there's one of the serious episodes that I think is without compare the best episode of any sitcom ever. Season 5, Episode 20: My Lunch. Fucking tear jerker.
(Season 9 went wayyt downhill btw)
Modern Family and The Middle were both fantastic.
More serious show I enjoyed. Game of Thrones is the best thing I've ever seen in TV and I resisted that for 6 years. Assumed it was hype. It was not. Likewise Breaking Bad. More recently the Lincoln Lawyer, Tulsa King, The Pit all good shows.
There's just so much...I could go one.
JulesSherlock@reddit
The Lincoln Lawyer is one of my favorite shows. Too bad they are stopping it at 5 seasons. I have never heard of Cougar Town but I wouldn’t avoid due to the name. I did watch Animal Kingdom (rough show) after all. So I’ll look it up. You’re right about me and Scrubs - tried and didn’t like. I enjoyed a few Modern Family episodes but not enough to watch consistently. I do think there are more series that are good than movies nowadays.
GiantMags@reddit
I just YouTube stuff. I watch sports updates on my phone.

I watch 2 movies a year: How High on April 20th, and Boondock Saints on St. Paddy's, and that's it. I don't even play old favorite TV shows as background noise anymore. I just can't get into it. I game, I read, I craft, I listen to music, but the television is never on.
Last time I was in a movie theater was for a concert live viewing in April, and prior to that, it had easily been a decade since.
NathanBrazil2@reddit
maybe 1 good comedy comes out a year now, its mostly gritty dramas and end of world stuff. if you liked late 90s tv and movies, stuff now sucks. no Indiana Jones, no Seinfield, no Friends.
pearlgirl10@reddit

threedogdad@reddit
this isn't generational. this is discussed in all the film/tv/entertainment subs all the time. tv/movies are by design derivative trash now, and there's so much content that makes for a whole lotta trash.
yes, there are some gems, but they are rare considering how much content is being made.
Farpoint_Farms@reddit
Everything has been dumbed down for newer generations. Look at movies. With the exception of Hail Mary, what movie in the past 3 years had a plot that didn't involve catroon charaters or super heros.
I used to blame it on the writers, but then I realized they were kids too. thank god for old series and movies, when I need to kill some time I just look for stuff released in the 80s.
Fine-Watercress8595@reddit
💯 agree. Dumbed down is the perfect way to describe.
YourGuyK@reddit
It feels like you're not giving movies a chance, or not looking for anything to enjoy. Here are some movies to check out:
Weapons

Anora
Mickey 17
The Housemaid
The Substance
A Real Pain

Fine-Watercress8595@reddit
Right here. Most new stuff is boring, rehashed, crap. I long for the days of Pulp Fiction, Fargo, True Romance, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas..ect. I will most likely got see the Mando movie in a theater, because I'll be traveling soon and looking for stuff to do, but I certainly have not made any grand effort to see it like in the past.
YourGuyK@reddit
No, I still enjoy new movies and TV. Rooster was the newest show I've really liked, and I watched Mickey 17 from last year last night and I really liked that as well.

Have a few friends that have been recommending what they are watching on Netflix, or movies, etc... for years. Despite that I have never once taken them up on their recommendation and mention every once in a while that I don't really watch shows or movies anymore.
I've tried watching a few that were 'you gotta see this' recommended.... meh.... it's all overlydramatic, ridiculous to believe, and generally recycled and it seems to be getting worse now that a.i. is involved. The few times I've tried I've generally been mystified at how anyone could sit through an hour of it these days.
CountHonorius@reddit
Yes the 'you gotta see this' crowd is the drunk-on-hype fandom that lives vicariously through these shows.
melty75@reddit
Still trying to find something to measure up to the vibe of True Detective Season 1. I like sci-fi and nerdy stuff so I watch most of that (Mandalorian, GOT, Star Wars series). Movies are hit and miss now as always but more misses. Hail Mary Project was good. I watched The Tank this weekend in parts, and that was awful.
My couch time still gets a bit of video games. Picking away at FFVII Remake, and it's a blast.
Fearless-Sandwich823@reddit
Watching things is rarely interesting to me. I haven't watched things much for about 25-30 years. I have seen 3 movies in the theater sine 2010. I never watched much TV but I stopped altogether in 2018. So, yea, I am with you on that.
russellbernard@reddit
I'm a bad example but I have basically stopped all normal tv (broadcast or cable) watching since about 2009. Reality TV doesn't do anything for me and the rest is mostly trash. I watch a lot of older stuff, movies and anime. Well I really like cartoons with subtle adult jokes like rocko's modern life, angry beavers and invader zim. But, if it wasn't for my wife (9 years younger than me) I wouldn't really watch anything that's considered newer. And even then, watching those with her is a bit of a stretch as I'm usually either on my phone or playing a retro handheld with all the old games from systems I couldn't afford or my parents straight said no to me getting.

brostrummer@reddit
I’m Gen X, and I used to be in the film business in L.A… Covid/strikes/production filming in other countries/streaming seems to have really killed not only the industry, but has affected the product that is still put out, on a much smaller scale.
I can’t speak to what happens in development and pre-production, but it seems to me that a show like Breaking Bad, or a movie like goodfellas could never get greenlit today. The fact that franchises are being continually brought back like yet another Scream movie, seems to suggest studios only wanting to risk money on guaranteed vehicles.
The fact that Netflix is the big producer of films these days, unfortunately creates a formulaic, visual and storyline style of production and for me OP, I think that’s why everything is boring. It’s the Netflix formula that is so boring because Netflix would never do something edgy like Goodfellas.
RDeckNexus6@reddit
This is what happens when “art” be it movies or games or music is taken up as a profitable endeavour by investment capital or private equity firms…squeeze squeeze squeeze with little regard to the art/formula/recipe other than it was “successful” when we “acquired it”…of course this started with music I guess…but it very prevalent in the movie and game industry now…rinse repeat until it’s no longer viable

I don't like superhero movies so there's not much reason to go to the theater. I would go if there were grown-up movies playing. I do still find plenty of stuff to watch on TV (maybe not "series", but tons of good content on streaming svcs).
7eregrine@reddit
Super hero movies were a thing for a few years. That's faded. You're missing out.
cgund@reddit
I mean, I check to see what's showing and it's never what I'd call "grown up" movies except as we approach the holiday season. There's lots of horror and action otherwise and that's not my cup of tea.
7eregrine@reddit
You're probably "hearing about" a quarter of the movies out there. There are some excellent films out today.
cgund@reddit
I check to see what’s showing. Not sure why you put “hearing about” in quotes.
VarietyMage@reddit
Got rid of my TV after the first season of Chodie Shittaker not-playing Doctor Who. Doctor Who was the last program worth watching, and when she destroyed it, I didn't need a TV anymore. I don't stream anything except a tiny number of YouTube channels, and those less and less because most of them have changed (group shakeups, creators having children, creators going on tour and neglecting what made them famous, etc).
And this trend shows no chance of stopping or slowing, especially with the evil #AIslop going on.

Haven't been to the theatre since Oppenheimer, Patriot on Amazon is a dope ass show though...
Silly-Power@reddit
It's like music. If you had a curious open mind when you were younger by our age you would have experienced a myriad of musical styles and genres. So now when you listen to something new, you can't help compare it to something you heard years ago. And because that old something is something you're used to and possibly is an achor point to a comforting memory or memorable event you cannot help but consider the old song better than the new one.
Same with TV & movies. It all feels derivative because there are, arguably, just seven basic plots and just 36 dramatic situations. By our age we have seen them all in countless variations. So now a new movie or TV show can't help but feel familiar. Again we compare & contrast it to something from the past and find the new variation lacking.
For a young person without our experience and knowledge the story seems fresh & new.
Not just that, the story is aimed at the younger person who has a different mindset to us. A show appealing to them will likely not appeal to us.

Movies have gotten worse. American TV gets better and better, and adding in foreign TV, even better. If you can’t find great shows to watch, you’re not really trying.
West_Consequence8145@reddit
I've wondered did the quality of content change, or did my tastes. When I got Netflix I couldn't stay off it. Now I have Netflix, Prime, and access to a friends Disney, and I'm having trouble finding something I want to watch.
HeyHo__LetsGo@reddit
I only watch older TV shows and the odd older movie it seems these days. I just dont click with new TV and movies.
Meh.
ChrisRiley_42@reddit
I haven't been to a theater in decades
Flux_Inverter@reddit
I cut the cable in early 2000s, don't remember the year. Not watched broadcast TV since then. As for movies, have seen 1 in theaters since 2019. Its all gone down hill or behind a paywall (which I don't pay).
Repulsive-Box5243@reddit
I can't tell you the last time I watched anything on broadcast TV. Not news, not , variety shows, not sticoms or dramas, none of it. I don't have the patience for any of it anymore. I'll sit down for hours, with curiositystream, though :)
dtoddh@reddit
It's so tedious anymore. Now I just use the time on Reddit, but that's also aggravating-present company excluded.
But there's still recent good stuff you might haven't seen. And it's easy and free to access with torrents.
TheTwinSet02@reddit
I almost exclusively watch Korean dramas
SquashBrain@reddit
Me too. American television and its endless pursuit to be edgier than the show before it has lost its heart and soul. It’s just uncomfortable to watch now.
zoziw@reddit
TV shows have basically become 10 hour movies. I find myself going back to cable where, if you haven't watched an episode of Law and Order, FBI or 911, in months you can watch this week's and not have missed much.
I'm not really into 10 hour commitments any longer.
I still enjoy movies.
Square_Hero@reddit
Tv is sooo much better now than in the 80’s.
SignificantSystem902@reddit
We watch mostly Britbox or Masterpiece. Regular TV is just not good. Haven’t been to the movies in over a year too. Between prices, unruly people
In the theaters and our puppy, we are better watching at home where we can pause when we want to
Grafakos@reddit
Same, mostly Britbox and a few shows on PBS. Haven't been to a movie theater in nearly 20 years. I can find better content for free on YouTube.
TheWarDoctor@reddit
Scrubs reboot has basically been the only tv thing I've liked in 5ish years.
ImmediateCan4099@reddit (OP)
Same 😍 can’t wait for another season. Although I’m not hooked on the new younger characters.
TheWarDoctor@reddit
They are growing on me.
WorkerFile@reddit
I’m definitely more discerning and I consume less than ever before. But I’ve got a little art movie house near me and I’m going to catch “I Love Boosters” sometime this week. One of my oldest friends and I regularly go to nerdy superhero movies together. I enjoy rewatching campy films from when I was younger: Big Trouble in Little China, Ghostbusters, etc.
Television shows really have to be solid to hook me, and I just canceled Netflix because I didn’t watch it enough. There’s no upcoming shows that have me excited and I despise reality TV.
I’d rather spend my evening’s puttering around with my hobbies like an old man.
TastyCheeseRolls@reddit
A lot of the old stuff we used to enjoyed watched has aged badly to the extent it’s almost unwatchable. I recently tried to rewatch an episode of Hogan’s Heroes and it was great nostalgia wise for the first 10 mins or so but after that you realize how goddamn old it is. There’s plenty of great recent content out there, we’re spoilt for choice. I just started watching Resident Alien and that’s freaking hilarious.
Dead_Inside50@reddit
Sequels, prequels, and reboots. All shit.
No-Cauliflower-6777@reddit
Maybe true for some. Outlander just finished up 8 seasons. The boys just finshed up. 5 seasons. Inivincible just did a season. More to come. Yellowstone is done. But the story continues. Frieren is getting more seasons. Delicious in dungeon has more on the way i think. We have warhammer coming on amazon. The bear is going into its final season. The pitt seams to have a following. Never seen it. Heard good things.
Say what you want about One piece but the live action in my opinion is great.
I find lots of new stories to watch. Apple tv seems to have lots of IP that is not remake etc.
Sea_Brush4156@reddit
I haven't been to the movies in about 15 years. I keep MeTV on, usually, and I watch NASCAR and wrestling. That's literally all I watch on mainstream tv. The rest of the time, I watch YouTube videos and live streamers. Sometimes BritBox and Tubi, but I tend to watch old stuff.
arothmanmusic@reddit
I never really did in the first place.
imrickjamesbioch@reddit
Not that I can’t afford it I looked IMAX was like $33 per ticket and my wife gonna want popcorn, pizza, wine, so it’s gonna cost me like $150 to see a moves. For that price I’d just rather have a nice meal and put on a movie at home.
An I don’t like watching TV/streaming cuz my attention span is longer than 10 minutes so I hate these 30m episodes which are really 20m episodes and then the ole 6-8 season episode seasons. Whatever happened to the 13 or 26 episode season.
Sadly I just sit the pooch, rub his belly and play solitaire all night and the wife will read a book.
YourAuthenticVoice@reddit
I moved out of the country back in 2012, where I moved the TV had no appeal for me. When I moved back to the US in 2020 I found that TV had moved to a place I didn't really care about. Same thing happened with movies. Every once in a while I find something on Youtube Free Movies to watch, generally old shows I missed, but maybe once a year.
Movies all seem to be the same now. It's either what's the cool new effect or who's the cool new hero. There just doesn't seem to be any stories that I care about anymore.
Honestly, since I stopped Saturday morning cartoons, TV has been pretty much all downhill in my opinion.
Amazing_Effective758@reddit
Right here I haven’t watched with a few exceptions many tv shows or movies since about 95 all I watch is news and sports
Mbluish@reddit
I like getting to the movie theater just because I love the experience. I’ll go by myself at times. I probably go to 5 movies or so a year.
As for TV, I hardly turn it on. There are a few different series that I’ve loved and a couple of reality shows I watch but other than that nothing.
I’m still a total gamer by night.
Trike117@reddit
No, TV is awesome and movies have the same mix of good and bad.
I hated sitcoms for decades because so many shows in the 1970s were so mean-spirited. Even Happy Days relied on insults for its humor. Shows like The Good Place or Monarch are genuinely great.
theothersock82@reddit
TV is especially disappointing these days. 8 episode seasons that take 2 years to release. Who could possibly care about a show when you have to wait that long for it?
SMakked@reddit
I can't watch anything these days. All I see in everything is propaganda. And when you really look into it this is exactly what it is.
gjohill@reddit
I don't know if it's me or the shows, but I can't remember them like a year later. At all. I've been halfway through movies or several episodes into a show and start to remember that I saw it a year ago.
I think it's the shitty writing, not me.
Electric-Sheepskin@reddit
I finally understand why older people love the shows on CBS. Episodic, nothing too complex, and if you miss an episode here or there, or can't remember what happened last season, it doesn't really matter.
Poneke365@reddit
Imho there’s some great content coming out all the time
PotatoSpirit007@reddit
Yep. That is why Britbox is something I pay for. Endless murders, more episodic in nature, as opposed to the serialisation. Really sucks to watch most shows that end on a cliffhanger, because next year it airs, and I can't for the life of me remember how we left the characters, and I have to scramble to find the last episode to make sense.
Electric-Sheepskin@reddit
That's my problem too, lol. And I hate that with some streaming they don't show you the "last season on" recaps. Like come on! I can't remember what I had for breakfast, so I'm certainly not going to remember the complex plot from last season.
No-Cauliflower-6777@reddit
Make it special. You might remember renting movies friday night, getting snack etc. Start again.
How about disney sunday nights.
Recreate what made them special.
My spouse and I like landman. So when it came on we make it a night together.
Even if the show that week is lackluster the event you make around is not.

I find the face work and the homogenized nature of it to be so distracting. I watched the latest aliens movie and was distracted by how young and perfect they looked. I know engineers can be young and perfect looking, but all of them? There’s no gravitas.

Golden age of TV my ass.
tangcameo@reddit
I tend to either cherry pick or fall back on shows I liked in the past. I’ve been burned many times by shows I found fascinating but they couldn’t stick the landing or solve the mystery at the core of the show
Haven’t been at a movie theatre in years. Not just because of the audience but because every theatre where I live cranked up the sound to ear bleeding levels. I’m tempted to get a projector for my living room but I hear those burn out quite quickly.
JJQuantum@reddit
Yeah the new stuff isn’t great for the most part. On a good note, however, I saw an announcement that Peter Jackson is in negotiations with the Tolkien estate to purchase the rights to the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales so that’s something to look forward to.

Nope.
We're still living through the greatest age for TV since the thing was invented. It's amazing, IMO.

OldBanjoFrog@reddit

prefabsprout1@reddit

grimlock75@reddit
This is kind of what I was thinking about lately. Even stuff from the 2010's that I might have missed or wasn't my demographic seems more soothing than Stranger Things or any new Star Wars.
HemlockGrv@reddit
I watch a comfort show occasionally but rarely watch anything new. I do enjoy going to the cinema maybe once a year and it’s usually more about the experience because half the time the movie ends up sucky.
_Brandobaris_@reddit
Um. No. This is the heyday for TV. There is more better TV on each night than ever before. Unfortunately it is just more difficult to find, since there is more than 3 channels. Movies are about the same, although ridiculously expensive.
Bardamu911@reddit
So far today there have been threads on this sub "Travel sucks now," "Concerts suck now," and this one, "TV and movies suck now." mild_shart_attack@reddit
I’m so tired of my people being so predictable. There is so much cool stuff out there. You either find it and enjoy it. Or you sit at home and bitch about everything. Why would anyone choose the latter.
Bardamu911@reddit
let's not overthink this, it's cuz they kinda suck

tbf, the 'concerts suck now' post title was misleading. OP enjoyed the heck out of the concert, but found the logistics of getting out and home daunting. My read was it was more self-deprecating than critical.

Not sure if that answers your question, I don’t have a tv and don’t go to the movies but the most recent crop of shows and movies seems pretty thoughtful and interesting.

Sitcoms are so lame now. They're not even a little bit funny. The political agenda is always obvious. Grey's Anatomy tanked with COVID. Kitchen-Zebra-4402@reddit

I only watch YouTube these days. I have a few hobbies, and other things I’m into, and there’s so many different people out there making videos you get different takes on things. These days the news is too bias depending on which side the owner of the station falls on. Most movies just straight up suck, and series shows suffer from much of the same.
