I’m 73 and have been very happily married for 53 years. But I have found and friended several old boyfriends and crushes over the years and see them at class reunions. All of them seem to be fine, upstanding human beings. I seem to be attracted to ‘good’ people.

Well, except the one guy who asked me to marry him about the same time my husband asked me to marry him. I went to my mom and asked her advice. She presented a Pro/Con list and I based my decision on who to marry on that.

Last I heard, the guy I didn’t choose had failed at several marriages, beat his women and was selling sausages to tourists in Mexico. None of his family have a clue where he is or if he’s even alive. Yeah, I definitely dodged that bullet. Thank you mom.

I moved back to my home country around six years after university . Was down at the mailboxes getting mail when I very large woman said hello and wondered how long I'd been back home. We talked for a while and I couldn't stop myself from being honest. "It's been too long, I have no idea who you are."

A few years ago I looked up my ex-wife on Facebook. We've been divorced now for 35+ years and had no kids so no need to keep in touch. At first I couldn't find any pictures of her in her feed. After looking at the feeds of her siblings I figured out why.

She had always had problems with her weight while we had been married but she at least tried to keep active and eat well and so was only about 25 pounds overweight. After seeing her pictures in her siblings feeds I almost didn't recognize her, because she was SO huge! She was easily double the weight now.

Just the other day i was hanging out with my ex and she brought up another old ex of mine, who was apparently up to about 350 but got on ozempic and has lost some weight, but still looks like the loch ness monster.

Anyway, apparently she's still a dog person, so it would have never worked between us.

I was class of 1989 and we’ve lost about 7 classmates to motor vehicle accidents, heart attacks and cancer. Sadly there were two classmates who lost a child to suicide and MVA.

Went to my 40th HS reunion a little bit ago. I found it vastly unfair that all the women still looked great, and all the men looked ... old.

Eventually figured out that in one case that was due partly to surgery. Took a while to work that out, because I'm not the most observant person.

The truth OP, is that you probably don't look anywhere near as good as you think you do. So there's somebody out there that used to crush on you and they think they dodged a gigantic asteroid.

It's not your fault either.

It's literally human nature to have an internal vision of yourself that isn't accurate with reality. It's why people always think they look good in their bathroom mirror. Yet, when they see photos of themselves, they can be horrified by their appearance in the photos.

I agree. I’ve had a few series of unfortunate events happen in the past decade, and I’ve definitely aged quicker than most because of them. Life and genes do what they want and most people have little control. obviously diet and exercise plays a part, and some people do just let go of themselves, but aside from that, we get what we get.

Oh yea. In HS I had a thing for one girl. From junior to senior year I kept getting mixed signals. We had a fling at first but then she ended it but we would still talk all the time, ride to school with me. Even went to prom together. But it was always impossible to read her and we never actually dated. Sometimes she’d even get irrationally mad at me but I overlooked this.

30 years later we were all on fb and reconnecting and i learned that she got married late 20s but it didn’t last long. She looked outstanding for a 40 year old (and still does at 54).

Girl I dated briefly in HS - cute and a bit quirky. She's looking a bit rough for 55. There's nothing that I would find physically attractive about her today. Ended up marrying someone nearly 20 years older than her.

I’ve seen this a lot! I’m never on FB except for my neighborhood page once in awhile… Then I’ll scroll thru “people you may know” and am shocked how most haven’t aged well. The worst was when I was still in my 30s and a girl from my grade looked older than I do now! I just scroll and say “woah” in my best Keanu Reeves voice.

That said, I won the genetics roulette, I’m 49 and still look late 30s… My whole family is like that. My husband looked about 10 years younger too up until recently, an illness really took a toll on him, so he’s looking about 5 years at the most younger on a good day, and his age (50) on rough days or when he’s really tired. It happens to all of us eventually! With peri, I feel my actual age more than I ever have before…

I look at every wrinkle, scar, roll, sunspot, gray hair (or bald head) as a story of resilience. Who knows what invisible problems they’ve had to endure? Certainly by looking at me you wouldn’t know of the years of extreme joint pain and migraines I suffered through. Or the CSA trauma I overcame. Or all of the other horrors I’ve seen. So no, I don’t look at others and focus on negative physical traits. I’m far more judgmental of how a person treats others.

Not so much their looks now versus then. Everyone ages, including myself.

Really I just think back to the reasoning at the time that I had not to pursue or deepen the relationship, and everything I know about them since confirms that my gut was right.

The one who talked down to me, probably because she was the youngest in her family and got talked down to as well, probably would have done so my entire life.

The one who questioned my my goals in life, probably because she didn't have any of her own, would have deflated me along the way.

The one who was incredibly passionate and exciting but came from money and was all over the place in terms of her values, as well as completely unreliable. She went on to have a string of relationships. I would have just been one in that string.

The one who was a tremendous intellectual fit struck me as completely incapable of building a relationship. I accept at least 50% of the blame for that because I also wasn't ready to think about that in my life either. Maybe more than 50%.

The exception was my first. And there my gut was telling me I was just too young and immature. She was decided on me, but I was in no place to make that kind of choice for either of us. This was high school.

Not exactly dodging a bullet but in 8th grade I thought Dawn was the hottest thing that had ever existed. She was about a billion miles out of my league. Every guy in school crushed on her or at least admired her beauty. I imagined her one day marrying some wealthy hedge fund manager, prince, congressman or other man of importance capable of landing a woman of such rare beauty. She was surely destined for a life of glamor and style.

One day I fell down a rabbit hole on fb looking at old middle school friends until I stumbled on Dawn. She was living alone in a tiny, poorly maintained house and her posts were mostly about her cats. Her life didnt look that great. I'm not saying anyone living alone with a cat has a sad life but her posts painted a picture of a life that was well..kinda sad.
