Ever see someone on FB or IG that you crushed on in school and thought "damn I dodged a bullet there!"

Every now and then I'm on Facebook and I see someone I had a crush on or that was a hottie back in the day and I am genuinely surprised that they did not age well. I'm not saying that I'm anything great, and I believe there is someone for everyone, so no shame. But I'm just genuinely surprised that they aren't nearly as attractive as they were back in the day.
Anyone else?

Oh yea, we had a crew of five of us that hung out in the morning before class in high school. I casually went out with two of the girls, one of them I had a crush on. At my 20 year class reunion I learned through the grapevine she was living a disaster of a life. Married and divorced four times and five kids. Yikes.

Ow THATS dodging a round. š»
ADF21a@reddit
Apart from a few people from high school, most of the boys I liked aged very badly. I guess because I don't dress frumpy and my general quirky vibe, people have taken me for 10 years younger. I feel like I'm the hot one now, not them! Revenge! š

All the "hot" girls from my High School days are fat with multiple children....or deceased.
Barflyerdammit@reddit
Many of them settled down: never leave the state, live vicariously through their kids, play golf and stay home on weekends. Basically, they are already dead.
Rare_Magazine_5362@reddit
Sounds like you have a super interesting life of adventure. Congratulations. Most people just wanna play with their kids on the weekends. ;)
Barflyerdammit@reddit
You can play with your kids and still have fun, but for most of my peers, their kids are in or finishing college. Taking them to Chuck E Cheese has a whole different vibe now. But they're at least old enough to bring the gummies.

Iām 73 and have been very happily married for 53 years. But I have found and friended several old boyfriends and crushes over the years and see them at class reunions. All of them seem to be fine, upstanding human beings. I seem to be attracted to āgoodā people.
Well, except the one guy who asked me to marry him about the same time my husband asked me to marry him. I went to my mom and asked her advice. She presented a Pro/Con list and I based my decision on who to marry on that.
Last I heard, the guy I didnāt choose had failed at several marriages, beat his women and was selling sausages to tourists in Mexico. None of his family have a clue where he is or if heās even alive. Yeah, I definitely dodged that bullet. Thank you mom.

I moved back to my home country around six years after university . Was down at the mailboxes getting mail when I very large woman said hello and wondered how long I'd been back home. We talked for a while and I couldn't stop myself from being honest. "It's been too long, I have no idea who you are."
Turns out it was one of the hot popular girls from high school. Totally unrecognisable.

Iād say I had 2 serious-for-high-school relationships as well as a few people with whom the timing just never worked out. A few years ago I looked up my ex-wife on Facebook. We've been divorced now for 35+ years and had no kids so no need to keep in touch. At first I couldn't find any pictures of her in her feed. After looking at the feeds of her siblings I figured out why.
She had always had problems with her weight while we had been married but she at least tried to keep active and eat well and so was only about 25 pounds overweight. After seeing her pictures in her siblings feeds I almost didn't recognize her, because she was SO huge! She was easily double the weight now.

I got coerced into going to a high school reunion by one of my besties from then & made a huge faux pas on the way in. My companion and I had been the minority to leave the area entirely so were more out of the loop than the others. Iād passed one old acquaintance whoād moved in the same circles just earlier and hadnāt recognised him it ALL but tried to cover it. My mom always told me to make sure I met a girl's mom and to see both without makeup. She said whatever her mom looks like, she'll most likely look the same in 20-30 years. I'm glad I listened to her advice!

I was in absolute LOVE with this girl who was older than me in high school. So much so that I wrote about it in her yearbook when she asked me to sign it saying something about being in love with her and wanting to be with her. Never heard from her. I went back to the town fifteen years later and yeah ... She had changed. Tried to hold me to the yearbook thing and I had to make up a fiance on the spot.

dreaminginteal@reddit
Went to my 40th HS reunion a little bit ago. I found it vastly unfair that all the women still looked great, and all the men looked ... old.
Eventually figured out that in one case that was due partly to surgery. Took a while to work that out, because I'm not the most observant person.
Financial-Jump-6408@reddit
Also because women are expected to maintain appearances so we do things like exercise and skincare and makeup and men literally do nothing in comparisonĀ
IHadTacosYesterday@reddit
I know very few GenX women that would be considered fit.
Seems like most have completely given up on it. Or maybe they do exercise a little bit here and there, but they also get hot fudge sundaes on the regular

Women generally keep a full head of hair as they age, while men often do not. That alone makes a big difference in appearance.

The truth OP, is that you probably don't look anywhere near as good as you think you do. So there's somebody out there that used to crush on you and they think they dodged a gigantic asteroid.
It's not your fault either.
It's literally human nature to have an internal vision of yourself that isn't accurate with reality. It's why people always think they look good in their bathroom mirror. Yet, when they see photos of themselves, they can be horrified by their appearance in the photos.
The photos is the real shit.

HS Senior year girlfriend , we were serious enough (or thought) that she would wait for me to go into Military Service, move to where I was stationed , and carry on as we were .
I was injured in basic badly enough that I was given a Medical Discharge. I came home with no career path, and told her we needed to chill until I healed and was able to find a job .
We drifted apart , she met another guy and got married a few years later, had like 5 kids , and got hooked on who knows what. She went from Head Cheerleader to looking like one of those advertisements for Just Say No To Drugs

We're all getting old and have taken what life has thrown at us, so I'm not gonna bash anyone for looking their age and not the attractive teenagers we used to be.
One person I admired from afar back in school turned into a major bible-thumper in recent years (based on social media posts) - definitely not what I expected or would have been compatible with.
myeggsarebig@reddit
I agree. Iāve had a few series of unfortunate events happen in the past decade, and Iāve definitely aged quicker than most because of them. Life and genes do what they want and most people have little control. obviously diet and exercise plays a part, and some people do just let go of themselves, but aside from that, we get what we get.

30 years later we were all on fb and reconnecting and i learned that she got married late 20s but it didnāt last long. She looked outstanding for a 40 year old (and still does at 54).

One of my FB friends CLEARLY uses filters and claims that she doesn't. Like girl, I have seen you in PERSON fairly recently. I saw all those wrinkles! She also has posted pics where she is clearly wearing makeup and said "Oh my! Me and my naked face! It's so hard posting a pic with no make-up!". Wow.. So amazing! You look like you're wearing eyeliner, mascara, probably foundation and a light lipstick and using a diffusion filter to blur out the lines. People will comment "omg-- you look SO AMAZING!!!" Maybe I'm the weird one because I do post pics of my actual current self.

Gosh this just got me to look up my first major crush and he is looking hot as hell right now. All I could do was hope she would break up with him eventually. She was also a really wonderful person and then they ended up with a child together and so I finally resigned myself to having found that one too late but now it looks like they actually separated twelve years ago so I missed my chance! Never mind the fact that I was very happily married (and still am, heh) with five kids myself at the time... and just looking over everything I could find about him he is still just as kind and passionate about all the same things I am and as I mentioned he is looking really, really good... I swear he actually looks better! Not that it was his looks that first drew me in, I would say he was maybe a 6 in looks back then? Now he's a high 9, easy. It's crazy, he had a younger brother that was my age and always got voted best looking in school but almost 40 years later he has not aged nearly as well as his big brother.

Definitely seen some hotties go south. And 2 or 3 that are still hot, but now have abhorrent political views.
I told my son when he was in high school, "be nice to the mids, they get hot when they're older".

Girl I dated briefly in HS - cute and a bit quirky. She's looking a bit rough for 55. There's nothing that I would find physically attractive about her today. Ended up marrying someone nearly 20 years older than her.

Iāve seen this a lot! Iām never on FB except for my neighborhood page once in awhile⦠Then Iāll scroll thru āpeople you may knowā and am shocked how most havenāt aged well. The worst was when I was still in my 30s and a girl from my grade looked older than I do now! I just scroll and say āwoahā in my best Keanu Reeves voice.
That said, I won the genetics roulette, Iām 49 and still look late 30s⦠My whole family is like that. My husband looked about 10 years younger too up until recently, an illness really took a toll on him, so heās looking about 5 years at the most younger on a good day, and his age (50) on rough days or when heās really tired. It happens to all of us eventually! With peri, I feel my actual age more than I ever have beforeā¦
NightGod@reddit
My favorite is the surprised way a couple of them said my name at my 25th reunion, but overall at worst they went from 'hottie" to "average looking", none really fell off hard enough that I could look at them now and say anything that wouldn't feel like I was just trying to be mean
Apart_Olive_3539@reddit
Yes, and uncannily, several in or out of school a few years. I know we all don't age the same, but I was genuinely surprised by the changes even before the point that aging or aging gracefully should be a descriptor.
A-more-splendid-life@reddit

There was a girl in high school i liked, everyone kinda did. Much more popular than me, she was the star of chorus. She had a scholarship to Juilliard for singing. She was really good, she was pretty, very well liked by everyone. I worked the summer after senior year. We graduated the same year. A couple guys I worked with invited me to a strip club that allowed you in at 18. You'll never guess who I saw on stage, if you guessed that same girl, you'd be correct. Some years later I found out she never went to school. Stayed stripping until she got pregnant, now she's got five of them. Shes a "party planner" no one has e er heard of her planning an actual party. labretirementhome@reddit
Not so much their looks now versus then. Everyone ages, including myself.
Really I just think back to the reasoning at the time that I had not to pursue or deepen the relationship, and everything I know about them since confirms that my gut was right.
The one who talked down to me, probably because she was the youngest in her family and got talked down to as well, probably would have done so my entire life.
The one who questioned my my goals in life, probably because she didn't have any of her own, would have deflated me along the way.
The one who was incredibly passionate and exciting but came from money and was all over the place in terms of her values, as well as completely unreliable. She went on to have a string of relationships. I would have just been one in that string.
The one who was a tremendous intellectual fit struck me as completely incapable of building a relationship. I accept at least 50% of the blame for that because I also wasn't ready to think about that in my life either. Maybe more than 50%.
The exception was my first. And there my gut was telling me I was just too young and immature. She was decided on me, but I was in no place to make that kind of choice for either of us. This was high school.
So I think there would have been regrets regardless, but it's hard to prove a negative.
MeMyselfnI20@reddit

Oh boy, the one really cute girl I had a crush on, she was in the same friend group and was dating a friend (like a guy who I would hang out with but not one Iād ever recommend as a boyfriend) ended up dumping him and eventually married my pathetic 4th point of contact. She has aged very well - like sheās still hot and still as sweet as sugar. She however settled, she claims that she married me for love rather than making some rich guy marry her. She has very simple tastes - translation sheās cheap and frugal.
On a related note, at least three of the girls I was flirting with (hooking up with) all got married very quickly after dating me, had a few kids, and divorced. Iām not certain what that says about me.

Not exactly dodging a bullet but in 8th grade I thought Dawn was the hottest thing that had ever existed. She was about a billion miles out of my league. Every guy in school crushed on her or at least admired her beauty. I imagined her one day marrying some wealthy hedge fund manager, prince, congressman or other man of importance capable of landing a woman of such rare beauty. She was surely destined for a life of glamor and style.
One day I fell down a rabbit hole on fb looking at old middle school friends until I stumbled on Dawn. She was living alone in a tiny, poorly maintained house and her posts were mostly about her cats. Her life didnt look that great. No.
Maybe I'm full of myself, but I imagine women I went to high school or college with look at my profile on Facebook and consider me a missed opportunity.
I'm over 50 now. I didn't get fat, didn't lose my hair, married a beautiful woman who is the mother to our two children.
We live in a giant house in a wealthy town in Connecticut (I'm from Central California), and we're doing very well.
EntranceFeisty8373@reddit
Same boat... Maybe not as wealthy, but I'm comfortable and definitely don't look my age.
InebriousBarman@reddit
I was really a geek in school.
I guess I was popular (I won the 'Senior Know-It-All' award at a large high school), but I sure wasn't 'cool'.
Hedonistic_Yinzer@reddit
Yeah I am kind of faced with a dilemma. Had an old friend reach out a year or so ago and passed on the phone number of the one who got away. Apparently over the decades she has had similar thoughts as I have. Way back then our lives just went in different directions, and some interference from parents ( both hers and mine ) led to our demise. The mutual friend has even passed on recent pictures of her, and she is a total smoke show now as she was back then. The dilemma lies in my having a wife. I am certain I could pass off a coffee Meetup as innocent, but not sure it would be. Sigh, the number sits unused

I looked up my crush and he is still hot. I looked up a bitch that I hated and she had long, frizzy gray hair.

No, when I think about friends of yesteryear, I'm just happy to see how we've all evolved. I think about the classmate that drowned right before graduation on spring break, that didn't get that chance.

I dated a sweet, all American looking guy back then but of course broke up. He posted a video of himself at an event dancing, omg, he looked like he was doing the Fred Flintstone! Even looked like him, minus the hairline. Wtf happened??
scarletOwilde@reddit
Hell yes! There was a boy in my town that many of us girls had a crush on in our early teens. He was a ābad boyā, had a motorbike etc and was always aloof, which we thought was cool.
He got in touch with me after his third (!) marriage failed, he had lost his looks and was extremely creepy!

There was one guy in HS I hooked up with a few times, hot as hell, looks like and obese Chopper Read now, also just found out Chopper died when doing the spell check for his name!

Found out that my ex-fiance, who left me for a girl he met on the very early internet, has since been married and divorced twice (not to that same girl). Meanwhile my husband andI were married 25 years in March. So I think I came out ahead.

Yeah. Last time I checked she had 7 kids. A breeder for sure.

Ok_Driver8646@reddit
Sounds like my X. Hateful people never age well. I survived her gaslighting & abuse with divorce. So I didnāt quite dodge the bullet but still free. Whew.
Willing_Freedom_1067@reddit
The one guy I crushed on, Iāve been in touch with. He doesnāt look the same - but few of us do, so thatās not it for me. Weāre both single, so we could date, I suppose.
My issue is that heās still stuck in high school mode. Heās never advanced, educationally or otherwise. He was a sweet guy and a lot of thrills - for 1989 me.
2026 me needs a lot more.
Ok_Explorer604@reddit
Time ravages all of us. I think weāre also the bullet many have dodged. We see ourselves in the mirror everyday and donāt notice the change as much. Ā Our memories of past relationships have been frozen in time, preserved at peak attractiveness.Ā
I am blissfully ignorant due to not having Facebook or Instagram.Ā
SignificantApricot69@reddit
I get what you are saying, but plenty of us are better looking, in better shape, better off (not the poor, fat, ugly nerds, etc) than we were when we were teenagers. Iād even say that most middle-aged men who havenāt given up on life are more attractive than they were in HS.
tkkana@reddit
Well my high school crush didn't do so well, but I guess I did, he asked me out a couple of years ago. And I was like oh honey that ship sailed. ( would have rocked his world in 85)
Hairy-Preference-824@reddit
I always looked a lot younger, not a good thing in HS, now at 56 it is actually a good thing. Met my HS crush recently, she afed well, but lots of complaining. Feel like i dodged a bullet there.
some_human_69420@reddit
People were shitty to me in HS. I worked hard and kept my life reasonable and have been quite fortunate in the decisions I have made over the years. A lot of those "better than you" people (male and female) are not doing so well at this stage of life.
I can admit I carry a lot of childhood pain from these so called "better than me" people so seeing one in the wild not having a good day does make me shrug and wonder at times.
Vespizzari@reddit
100% yes. I'm someone who looks a LOT better at 48 then I did at 18 or 28. (I didn't really get serious about health and fitness until my late 20's and early 30's)
I see quite a few people I once thought were super cute/hot/cool and now they look boring, old, and/or busted.
SignificantApricot69@reddit
Same here. And Iāve had a couple of them reach out to me, when they wouldnāt give me the time of day then. Even a couple married women in DMs claiming they had a huge crush on me and wish that had picked me instead. Like wtf man
PM_meyourGradyWhite@reddit
High school girl friend for a brief period. Saw her at a funeral thirty years later and she aged extremely well, but the little hints of craziness I saw in her then were MAGNIFIED. She married a classmate and I kinda felt sorry for him.

I graduated high school many, many years ago and we have all aged. All of us. The dodged bullets at this point are the ones who went to prison, have had four divorces, addiction, basically have led very troubled lives. And this includes one of the most popular girls in the class. Messy.

No but I was messaged on FB once by a guy who said he had been in love with me in HS - and I had no recollection of him at all. Even when I dug out yearbooks. He went on to message me for a while. He had gotten married and then ādiscoveredā that he was gay (I came out as gay at 15 - Sophomore year) and it after a few messages, it seemed clear that he was trying to catch my interest romantically, which was just weird. Flash forward 30 years and Iām checking out at Home Depot and Iām looking at this old, overweight woman whoās disheveled and looks like she needs a drink āstatā lol and behold it was her. Hey, sometimes menopause hits hard.
I've seen it. This friend of mine was thin, practiced yoga and was a vegetarian. Good looking gal. Then menopause bum rushed her. Hair thinned and turned white. Put on a whole 'nother person's weight. And then some. Aunt Bee looked better than her.

All the time, lol! But based on their rep, less on their looks. Since Iām seeing posts about how bad women looked, I find generally the women have aged better than the men. But yeah, itās jarring to see how the prom kings and queens have aged - happens to all of us.
Amidormi@reddit
I had a jr high reunion that was pretty lit and yeah several people let themselves go, so to speak. The school bully got enormously overweight, as did a friend of mine. I dated a girl in the 80s. She was very cute. I dumped her though because she was very immature and acted like we were married.
After graduation I ran into her and she was still an smokeshow, so I tried to date her again. This time she wanted to get even with me for hurting her, so after a few weeks of hanging out (she was using me badly) I finally gave up.
A few years ago my mom was in Facebook (I'm not) and said she should look up this woman.

Dodged a bullet is an understatement. Granted she has had a very difficult life, an extremely abusive 1st husband. Lots of cigarettes and alcohol. But the 33 years had not been kind at all. I actually felt really bad for her.

A couple of the girls that were considered ātop 5ā in my class wounded up aging really hard, by 30-35. I attribute that to lots of sunshine and partying. Spending all that time in a bikini with a margarita in one hand doesnāt do you any long-term favors.

I dodged a bullet because I stupidly put an abusive narcissist on a pedestal in high school and thought losing her was losing everything. She has aged ok. But even if time stood still for her and I was single it wouldnāt make a difference. I wish I could forget the trauma.
