I still use my hotmail for sign-ups. It’s the catch-all for spam.
DDlg72@reddit
I had @aol.com
NaturalSpecialist5@reddit
Hotmail! I remember going to the library in 96 and using my Hotmail to send ecards to family. Yahoo wasn't far behind, but Hotmail had a cleaner interface.
REdd06@reddit
AOL, Hotmail and a Dallas early ISP @rampages.onramp.net

I had hotmail and yahoo before I eventually fell to the metamorphosis gmail...
Jamie Leigh Curtis is my movie kryptonite... A 10 in Perfect (can't remember anything about the story, btw) and still is a total smokeshow.
I'm early GenX - 1967.
imtoowhiteandnerdy@reddit
I registered a domain on the ARPANET (pre-cursor to the Internet) in 1988. Back then Network Solutions' stewardship of the
COM,NET, andORGtop-level domains had not become a thing yet, in fact this would've been prior to InterNIC (which I think is what Network Solutions was originally? I forget to be honest). But there was certainly no such thing as a commercial domain registrar like Godaddy, that's for sure.In those days the National Science Foundation ran things, and you had to have sponsorship to have an entry added to the ARPA hosts table. Ours came through the math department at he local university, where my friend's parents were both professors. His dad ran the VAX cluster at the university and had the NSF hookups to get sponsorship.
In those days all this gained us was dialup access to their Netblazer modem pool at the university, and UUCP (Usenet feeds) access for our bulletin board system (BBS). Back then having both Fidonet and Usenet was nice to have.

Merged. I worked for EarthLink when we merged with Mindspring. Kept the EarthLink name but headquarters were moved to Atlanta.
Spiritual-Fruit8348@reddit
My first one was @usa.net with netadress.com I believe. Months later I opened a geocities account and much later I was transferred to a Yahoo address.

panaceaLiquidGrace@reddit
My first was a .edu and it wasn’t on the internet. It was on BITNET
imtoowhiteandnerdy@reddit
BITNET RELAY was also big on the local VAX cluster at my University, up until around 1989 when IRC first came around. I remember logging into the Punisher node at Caltech, and I'm pretty sure BU (Boston University) had an early IRC server.
scbalazs@reddit
lol my first email other than college was earthlink.net. I still log into Microsoft with my hotmail.com address and still habe an active (ish) aol.com email.
maugiozzu@reddit
Got my first email address in 1997. Back then you had to pay for pricey dial-up plans that only came with one email, and my dad needed that for work. Getting a second one was extra, so a buddy of mine set me up with a free usa.net account. Being in Italy, I didn't even know if it was legit or if he’d just found a bug or used a fake ID to get it
spacebunsofsteel@reddit
My Hotmail.com predates Microsoft’s ownership of it.
My first email was from 1984 when I was a backup sysop on a call in bulletin board. My modem was 100 baud, or about 2.5 characters a second.
Rediscovered_Magpie@reddit
Anyone remember uk.yahoo.com?
spacebunsofsteel@reddit
I used to buy the new George Martin book on the Uk site because they published it a little earlier. I could order it and get it BEFORE Christmas and that was how I survived my 20s and Christmas vacation.

"My" first internet (in general) was CompuServe. I mean, it wasn't mine because I was too young, as it were, but it was my parents'. The account was a number, that's all I remember, not a name. It was written on a piece of paper taped on the desk.
My first email was Yahoo, I think. I still have it, but I don't use it as a main account. I remember using it some in college, back and forthing with someone from a library computer. I never had AOL--nor did my family. I think I had some other ISP's email at some point briefly...it's all ages ago now. Obviously.
I missed the whole MySpace thing entirely. I only joined FB later, after vehemently swearing I never would, and only for a group that communicates there. (I've since joined other groups and followed other things, but I still don't use it as a personal site.)

Exactly! My friends & I still talk about it to this day! AOL tried to copy it but it sucked haha. It very much was ahead of its time. I'm so very glad that I experienced it. I still have friends, to this day, that I met on WebTv back in 1999. That says a lot!

Forget AOL - my Gmail account is so old it was one in the original ‘invite only’ accounts. It’s so old it’s my full name @gmail.com , which has made giving anyone my address super simple for what feels like forever. The downside? Its also way too close to a ton of variations, accounts that were added over the years that are a letter or two off, , so I get a lot of other people’s emails…
notabackstagepass@reddit

If your first email ended in .edu, you had seniority.
UseACoasterJeez@reddit
I had an edu address, then when I graduated it wasn't long after the CIX had been created & I got dial-up service from a small ISP (that's long out of business) in January or February of 1992, maybe December '91, around then. The ISP was based in Santa Clara, not far from PSINet.
Then in 2004, one of my siblings got me into the invite-only beta test of Gmail, so I gradually built a "library" of several Gmail addresses that use variations of my real name & a handful of nicknames/handles I'd been using for ages (like Junior High/High School nicknames, and my CB Handle). No numbers, no odd spellings, straight-up single words or phrases.
It's funny now because if I'm telling someone my email, I have to point out there are no underscores, numbers, etc.
vhalember@reddit
I hear you!
My gmail address is my last name. No underscores, no hyphens, no numbers, no extra letters... just my last name.
I wish I had the foresight to get more variations back then, but hey, at least I got one.
jitterfish@reddit
I had hotmail before I had my university account. But NZ was slow on the internet uptake. I remember getting the internet my first year of uni, we didn't even have university user accounts or anything. I went to three different universities, it wasn't until I got to the third that I had a uni email account and user ID.
Now students have uni email addresses but never use them. I had to explain to a student how to access their uni email when they asked why they hadn't had a notification about something.

First email address was a BBS, then a now defunct ISP, then AOL, still have the AOL email just for S and Gs
ZealousidealStop1713@reddit
Met my wife on a BBS.
MassCasualty@reddit
I HAVE a hotmail address from before Microsoft bought them. I got it in 1993ish for trolling (before it was called that) my I.T. Friend in college because failed emails were kicked back and left a generic message like "failed to deliver to user_no_recipient@hotmail Dot com" (this isn't the actual message or address) But I ended up using that email address to this day for software and website registrations etc
dromCase@reddit
@prodigy.net from before it was an ISP

ooone-orkye@reddit
Same exact situation.
Also, I miss the good old days of yahoo and AOL IMs
gumby_twain@reddit
If you watch IASIP, sometimes I feel like Dennis in mental health day when I have to give some kid my YAHOO email address to sign up for some rewards account so I can get free drinks. At least they don’t force me to choke on boba.
Cool-Coffee-8949@reddit
The aol, compuserve and earthlink erasure hurts. But also, I knew someone who had an ENIAC.org email, and that was pretty next level.
gbarwis@reddit
Oh wow - my first was @madrigalscastle.fidonet.org in 1991, then aol.com, then some ISP (probably rr.com)

I remember you had to pay by the hour to use CompuServe and it wasn't cheap or fast over the 14.4k modem I had. Actually the 14.4k modem was a screamer compared to the really early users at 300 baud.

Yahoo was ahead of AOL.
When AOL people were just arriving at the net, they were considered newbies and clueless because they did not know how to behave yet and didn’t follow “the rules”, whatever the rules might have been for that particular area or site of the net.
Just like any other wave of new arrivals at any time.

AOL 1993, Yahoo 1997

AOL wanted to keep its subscribers OFF the internet because they, AOL, thought they could build a community where its subscribers would not need to use the internet besides email.
Really.
That delusion stopped after the AOL subscriber realized there was much more out there in the net than just Star Trek, Star Wars and ASCII porn.

I never used any foreign email services. But my first e-mail pre-dates all of those. (it's from back when the internet was for government and education institutions, and you had to know the routing to send an email.

CompuServe numbers with commas - and I still remember my password. It was for the software company where I worked, when attachments couldn’t be included in regular email. I used to send the too-big files to this geeky network engineer in our Australian office with it. He had his own personal Internet account, pre www days. We exchanged friendly emails along with the files/receipt of files. A bit later, he came over to work on a project and we ended up married and moving to Oz.

My first individual email was a .gov address. Specific to one system that was decomissioned probably 25 or 30 years ago. Before that, I had a group email address for my whole group, but we didn't hardly use it for anything at all.
Next was a personal address through a buddy's car parts business. The biz is still going, but the address was deleted a long time ago.
Then I picked up the Yahoo one. Then Gmail. I grabbed a Hotmail one somewhere in there, but I have no idea what the PW to it is any more.

Sheeeeeeet.
My email addy is fucking history. And it is also an interesting conversation piece. My email is @bellatlantic.net
People look at me when I tell them or write it down. I tell them. There was a time in this country when we got two telephone bills, local and long distance. And most everyone's long distance carrier was AT&T. The government broke AT&T up because they were a monopoly. Thet resulted in the baby bells.
I do not remember them all. Bell Atlantic, southwestern bell, mountain bell, pacifin bell. YOu get the jist and some of you remember this because
https://bigother.com/2011/06/10/a-death-star-for-curtis/
But the bay bells eventually became what? They became cell carriers, Verizon, T-mobile , sprint and yes.. LOL AT&T. I love that my email is a semi history lesson. But it gets better.
About 5 years ago Verizon send out a message that they would no longer be directly handling email, which was a staple of your internet provider at the time, before gmail.
So my Bellatlantic.net / verizon email is not outsourced. Do not scroll down without trying to guess where I long into to read email from an addy that I have had since 1998.
LMFAO. Fucking AOL.

I remember in 1987 I went over to my friend Garrison’s house. He showed me this neat game where he had to take the phone off the hook and set it on another device. Then he “called” the BBS and started playing. It was a text-based RPG on a green screen. And I was FASCINATED. It blew my mind that he was pretty much playing Dungeons & Dragons with other people on his computer. It felt so futuristic.
OtisPimpBoot@reddit
In high school my friend had Prodigy Internet and made tons of money downloading “adult content” and saving it onto 3.5” floppy disks that he’d sell for $10-20 a piece. The rich kids at our school really paid that for a handful of pixelated photos of naked women.
