What was our “literally?”

I’m kinda burned out of hearing the word literally from younger generations. It’s so overused in the wrong way. Did our generation have a word or phase that was completely overused?

Another friend came by on his way to work to share some excited news and dropped it twice in his upening couple seconds. When called on replied "Dude I'm going to work!"
After downing his triple shot he exclaimed, "Dude that's fucked up."

I'd say it was "like". I can remember my mom telling me and my cousin to stop saying like in every sentence.
Mogster2K@reddit
That and uptalking. Ending every sentence with the pitch going up? Like you're asking a question? But you're not? You're saying a sentence?
IllustratorEast5939@reddit
That’s more of a millennial thing here in California. As a fellow GenXr (born 74) I’ve never heard other GenX’rs here in LA throughout the 70s-90s use that. Was that in other States?
Lilythecat555@reddit
"Like" was all over TV and supposedly was a Valley Girl California thing. I was born in 75.
IllustratorEast5939@reddit
I was referring to the response above me that pointed out “uptalking” and making a regular sentence or statement sound like a question which my millennial siblings and their friends would do. I always found it annoying myself. But I’m very familiar with “Like”. Very familiar with Dweezil and Moon Zappa’s Valley Girl song.
IllustratorEast5939@reddit
They were bringing up the topic of “uptalking” as if asking a question but not really. The I to nation at the end of the sentence is like a question which is something my millennial sibling did often. But as a GenXr who grew up in LA, I’m very familiar with “Like” as I caught myself using that a lot in the early 80s.
Mogster2K@reddit
Yeah, from what I heard the Valley Girl accent didn't exist until the movie. Life imitating art.

Western New York here. We definitely used “literally” a lot. I remember some circles I was in playing with the term around 1990 where we would obnoxiously correct schoolmates and each other with “figuratively”. That lead to us substitute “figuratively” for “literally”, which never ever went anywhere. We were always trying to make “fetch” happen and we were never “streets ahead”.
The same group of guys, almost a decade later, abandoned “literally” entirely when Austin Powers was released and they fully embraced “honestly” as in “Honestly, who throws a shoe?”.
