Not too worried. People will find ways around the tech, like what has always been done. Plus, with Flock (and other road tech) around, you’re already being tracked. The only way people can truly be free of the over surveillance is if people are willing to fight for it. From what I’ve seen, majority will not. Not because they don’t want to, it’s because of ignorance. So many people just don’t know or don’t care to know.

Can't wait to not buy them. The consumer has the power.

Don't forget the remote disable.

For real?
GeorgeKaplanIsReal@reddit
This conversation seems emotionally charged more than anything else. According to an AP article, it specifically requires the technology to be passive, similar to other current safety mandates such as seat belts and air bags.
And it doesn't help Republicans seem to be doing exactly what they did in previous debates about everything from trans rights to universal healthcare to seatbelts and backup cameras: using hyperbole and fear to shift the narrative into the realm of fiction to make it more outrageous and easier for themselves to assail.
In fact, according to this article:
Where the confusion (and fear) seems to come from:
So some of the underlying driver monitoring technology critics point to already existed in certain vehicles BEFORE the law, especially systems that track attentiveness, drowsiness, or driver behavior. But the exact federal standard has not been finalized and NHTSA has not yet determined which technology will meet the mandate.
There are absolutely legitimate concerns here: false positives, privacy rules, emergency situations, and all the weird edge cases that come with putting this kind of tech in cars. But considering the actual technology has not even been defined yet, and likely will not be until at least next year, if even then, I’d say maybe take a breath before acting like this is already some finalized dystopian "kill switch" mandate.
fruderduck@reddit
Inch by inch
GeorgeKaplanIsReal@reddit
Well the slippery slope argument would have some value here except in this case the slope isn’t even defined yet since you know the technology hasn’t even been defined yet. If anybody seriously thinks this is gonna happen by 2027, 2028 or even 2029 - let me remind you of that time backup cameras were mandated in cars and how long that actually took to be implemented.
fruderduck@reddit
Maybe we can place a bet on Truth Predict about it by then.

There will probably be some tech people who will figure out how to jailbreak, physically modify, or install open source firmware. Not really a normal thing people would be comfortable with on such an expensive thing.

Hmm my car is a 2008 and insurance is pretty cheap, and stayed pretty cheap for years. Around $600 a year. I do relatively little driving and live/park in safe locations so I guess that's why but the rate hasn't gone up due to my car's increasing age.

Ya my truck is a 2010 cheap insurance and I plan to keep it until I can’t and if I have to buy something else it will be of that same age. Easy to work on not every thing is computer controlled and no touch screens. And I bought it with the fact that I could swap in a motor or trans from 5 or 6 other vehicles that Nissan used the 4.0 In so junkyard supply should stay good for years

It will still know where you are. It will know where you’ve been and when you were there. It will know if you were speeding. It will know if you failed to stop at a red light. It will know if you went to a gun range, or to a church, or to an abortion clinic, or to a political rally.
It will know where you live, where you work, and even who you are sleeping with.
The amount of information you can derive just from analyzing your location on a continual basis is astounding. And you don’t need a person to do the analysis anymore.
Here is an interesting paper about using an “analytical engine” back in the 18th to identify rebels in the colonies. It’s fictional, but an example of the kind of thing possible today:
https://kieranhealy.org/blog/archives/2013/06/09/using-metadata-to-find-paul-revere/
That kind of thing is enabled by using location data. It’s already possible with cell phone data, but you can leave your cell phone home. It’s harder (but not impossible) to travel in the US any distance without a car.

TankiesAreWeird@reddit
That is a popular conspiracy theory around the increasing cost of PC components. Dove tails in with the "own nothing" services that keep getting pushed. There is already backlash against all the subscriptions so I don't think it will really work out how they expect it to.
Seems more likely that people will just stop using the tech or use alternatives if it becomes to expensive or annoying to use.
Legally mandatory crap in cars could still be a problem. I'm tech inclined enough to seek out jail breaks, physical modifications, or open source firmware whenever my older car finally dies or I want to switch to electric. Most people aren't so that kinda sucks.
yourmomdotbiz@reddit
Now that you mention it. Young people are totally computer illiterate and it’s interesting

Millennials had to do all the same stuff. The difference is everything being moved to phones and tablets in general and simplified ui for both windows and mac. Gen z and gen alpha I doubt barely touch a computer. They’re the iPad kids.

Bob4Not@reddit
American government will do anything except model cities and public transportation after more developed parts of the world. People don’t drive drunk if they can walk home or afford a 7 minute taxi ride home.
ikindapoopedmypants@reddit
Used car prices are already crazy 💀
syphilisticcontinuum@reddit
If this were resolved, people would still drive drunk for other (bad) reasons, and we would still be right here debating this impairment detection.
Freedom and liberty have a price. People make poor decisions, accidents happen, people die, and that sucks, but freedom and liberty are the only thing that makes this country great. It's our founding principles. At some point people need to make a choice and stop pushing the government for solutions to the normal consequences of liberty.
If you want more safety, there are many authoritarian countries that are very safe, so long as you stay inside the designated lines (which may shift arbitrarily at any time).
buttersofthands@reddit
Freedom and liberty for who? Those that can afford it? And what designated lines here don't shift arbitrarily now? The current admin keeps changing and also not even keeping the same talking points about our latest illegal invasion. We won the war but they can't close the straight but the straight is open and we'll close it but ships can go through but the war is over but Europe takes all our money and doesn't help.
I think you've completely bought in to American propaganda about how "Authoritarian" other parts of the world are and how we eat freedom for breakfast everyday.
syphilisticcontinuum@reddit
What we have right now isn't freedom, it's an illusion, it's propaganda as you said. I think we all grew comfortable and complacent, and we've substantially outsourced our safety to the federal government. The Constitution tried to protect us from this, but it required keeping the american spirit alive (self-reliance, resilience, personal responsibility, morals, etc).
It has nothing to do with the current administration, or the last. It's all of us, it's the extent that we've allowed the federal government to violate the Constitution and our rights. It's the imbalance of power between the federal government and the people, and the lack of transparency (from which accountability flows) by abuse of state secrets.
pandershrek@reddit
You're wrong and should shut up.
syphilisticcontinuum@reddit
Wrong about what?
I think it's better to engage in discourse than tell someone to shut up. Civil conversations are for the betterment of humanity.
Bob4Not@reddit
It sounds to me like you're saying denser city planning and public transportation are authoritarian and infringe on your freedom and liberty.
Optionally owning a car is freedom. Not being coerced and required to own, insure, maintain, and operate your own car to live your life is freedom.
Bastilleinstructor@reddit
Former firefighter here. People will drive drunk even if they live next door. People think they are "fine" or, the inverse, they know they are too drunk to walk so they think in their drunk mind they have to drive.
Its not as simple as they will call a cab. They wont. Ive seen it.
Bob4Not@reddit
Sure, you won’t stop the egomaniacs with car, but not every drunk driver is that guy or gal.
You can also follow up any offense with stricter penalties. None of that 3 to 12 months for your first offense BS. We’re too lenient because there’s no alternative.

refusemouth@reddit
There should be a way to bypass the electrical circuit that would cause the vehicle to not start. There's going to be a big business opportunity for mechanics and auto-electric in the future with deleting all the glitchy, invasive tech in the cars from this time period. Too many damn sensors. Once the vehicles age and the sensors start malfunctioning, the cost of repair will be astronomical, so taking a broken conglomeration of computer chips and sensors and turning it into a functioning vehicle again will be important unless you have the money to buy a new plastic, computerized vehicle for $60 thousand or more. My plan is to just keep my 90s and early 2000s vehicles running by putting rebuilt motors, transmissions, and fuel pumps in them until I die and don't need a vehicle anymore. Or, build my own electric vehicle that doesn't have a touch screen, cameras, or electronic computer menus to operate everything. The new vehicles don't even have inputs for externally supplied music and want you to get subscriptions or Bluetooth everything just to listen to anything other than radio. And, the radio receivers suck and can't pull in stations from as far away as the old ones do.

I read the Feb 2026 NHTSA report to congress. They haven't yet found a way to properly implement this detection system. They're still undergoing research on how to set definitions. After that, it would take a while to approve a commercial design. Then each OEM would have to implement it onto their future models. No way this is all happening by 2027.
Excerpt from the report: II. Anticipated Timeline for FMVSS NHTSA remains dedicated to combatting impaired driving and the high number of deaths and injuries caused by impaired drivers through a combination of law enforcement activities, campaigns, and technological research that may enable rulemaking. NHTSA continues its work on critical and complex topics including technology readiness, test procedure development, and consumer acceptance, as well as cybersecurity and privacy concerns. These issues must be addressed to enable NHTSA to propose a rule that could satisfy Section 24220 of IIJA and the requirements of the Safety Act. NHTSA will continue to provide annual reports to Congress and publish status updates in the Unified Agenda of Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I asked AI about the 2021 infrastructure bill and it told me that the auto industry is dragging its feet on it because as of 2026 the existing“anti-distraction” technology that’s supposed to be going into next years’ cars is still pretty unreliable. Some auto manufacturers have already tried it out on 2026 models and the backlash on how unreliable it makes the vehicles has been pretty severe.

I find it odd that everyone is forgetting that any vehicle with a sat radio connection has been selling your data (and honestly most of the same worries apply) for decades. Getting an old car…..sure if you wanna forgoe 3 decades of comfort. The only real answer here is supporting the hacking scene

Guess I'm keeping my current car forever
BoredRedhead24@reddit
I like older cars, particularly ones made in Japan because they last forever and I can fix it myself.
Strange-Luck-5786@reddit
No thanks. I'll just get an e- bike. Down here in Louisiana tons of people out driving in regular traffic with their e-bikes and helmets. They beating the system. Don't even need car insurance which is through the roof as well.

Looks like I’m buying used models for as long as I can.

I look forward to the vicious backlash to this nonsense. As if modern vehicles weren’t unreliable trash enough already…

This is why I bought a car at the end of last year. A new car. My first new car, as I prefer used cars. But this one is new and this is why.

TankApprehensive3053@reddit
It's a few years old. It became known around 2020-2021. The time frame was too far out for most to believe it, so it faded out of the news cycle. There will be more and more articles about it as the deadline gets closer.

Me and my 2007 Camry are gonna hit 500k miles together or die trying 😂 My original goal was 400k, it’s at 325k now, but man I’m not letting it go until I absolutely have to 🥲 Sedans probably won’t even exist anymore if I make it to 500k with this one and that kills me

From the law itself in section 24220….
“ ADVANCED DRUNK AND IMPAIRED DRIVING PREVENTION TECHNOLOGY SAFETY STANDARD.—Subject to subsection (e) and not later than 3 years after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall issue a final rule prescribing a Federal motor vehicle safety standard under section 30111 of title 49, United States Code, that requires passenger motor vehicles manufactured after the effective date of that standard to be equipped with advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology. (d) REQUIREMENT.—To allow sufficient time for manufacturer compliance, the compliance date of the rule issued under subsection (c) shall be not earlier than 2 years and not more than 3 years after the date on which that rule is issued.”
Mountain_carrier530@reddit
The bill number and reasoning is real, however the only news source churning it up like this are questionable.
The bill states that the NHTSA has 5 years to come up with a way to implement the impairment tech, yet they haven't been able to do so. As much as I believe they'll try to do something like this. If they don't have the technology to mass produce this, then they can't enforce it. Most likely, it'll be in the high-end trims and marketed as some sort of safety feature for insurance.
The one silver lining of all these data centers hoarding all these microchips, RAM, and other tech goods is they physically can't produce enough sensors for this.
