I know I had one both in high school and my first apartment.

Often slept on one in the 80s. Not as sexy as advertised

Owned a classic one with first wife. With second wife I got an updated version.

I didn't but my parents had a "motionless" one for a few years.

I also had a motionless waterbed. A single sized bed, with foam around the bladder, and a mattress cover that zipped up around it. It absolutely did not look like a waterbed, just a box spring and mattress on the floor (surprised every friend who unsuspectingly sat on it). But so warm and cozy on the inside. I kept the temp as high as it would go in the winter, and reduced it to 8O° through the summer months. I currently have a heated mattress pad. It's nice to get into an already warmed bed.

i had one and got super drunk one night and puked in it when my parents were out of town, had to drain it and get a new mattress before they got back, think around 92 or so

I did as a teen, we also had a cat. If you didnt put pad and sheets back on (right away) when changing sheets.. combination waterbed and cat not good. He liked to attack the bubbles with his claws... whoops not good

Oh yes, that time the heater died and you didn’t realize it for a few days until you were laying in bed shivering and just couldn’t get warm. That’s when the fun of draining the whole thing, replacing the heater, and then refilling it all over again.

View on Reddit #80878808

endlesssearch482@reddit (OP)

The waterbed was all about rhythm. You had to move with the wave or it totally threw you off. No changing tempo or you’d have the bottom drop out right when you were trying to move in.
View on Reddit #80917507

Harkonnen_Dog@reddit

Yeah, okay… But, who has FUCKED on a water bed?
View on Reddit #80873445

endlesssearch482@reddit (OP)

Yes, my first marriage involved a water bed. Holy crap, it was a whole different experience of timing and rhythm. Finally we moved and decided to replace the waterbed mattress with a traditional mattress. Total game changer. But I still had my 12 drawer under dresser.

Had one from 19 to 24. I had no issues with it and would gladly go back to one. I thoroughly enjoyed climbing into a warm bed in the winter. I never had any leaks so it was pretty maintenance free and moving with it was a lot easier as everything broke down into manageable sized pieces. I moved a handful of times without a pickup truck and that would not have been possible with a regular mattress.
View on Reddit #80903677

Guilty as charged. Could never get it to the perfect temp, it was always too hot or too cold. Owned one during my, shall we say, freewheelin' teenage years. My Dad was always trying to keep girls out of my bedroom and fighting a losing battle. Back then I would rather take the heat just to spend more time with whatever young lass I was smitten with at the time.

No, but my mom's roommate's kid had one. They were two divorced mothers with shared custody of the kids with their ex-husbands. I think they arranged it so my brother and I were there when her roommate's kids were at their dad's. There wouldn't be enough beds if all the kids were there at once. My parents did and my best friends had one as well. I hated them. I'd go sleep at my best friend's place for a weekend and that bed just gave me anger issues. I loathed it and it was made worse because her mom was a horrid housekeeper - the floor was too filthy to sleep on, so I was stuck with that shifting bed. My parents had a waterbed when they first came out in hope it would help with my dad's joint issues for the heat, but it bothered my mom's back something fierce. When the tech advanced they got one of those that was water mixed with a mattress and they really liked that one. I just hated them with all my heart because I was usually stuck cleaning it.

Dumb. They weigh less per square foot than a refrigerator. Leaks are what renters insurance is for.

Yes! I got mine in the mid '80s, and had it until 1993 when I gave it to a friend when I moved. He got rid of the water mattress, and put a regular mattress in it. He still liked having a headboard that you could put things on. I think he kept that until the late '90s.

Fuck them beds!!! My first job was unloading Trailor Truckloads of those beds and then setting up floor models. Then, i got into some stupid tennager trouble and that year all 3 of my siblings got custom built waterbeds, except for me. Then, when i finally moved out on my own i had a waterbed without a heater, in Connecticut, so i froze my ass off many a night. Fuck those beds!!!

Me too!! Big Sur Waterbeds in Tucson AZ I had a little shop in the back of the warehouse where I could hide and nap when it was slow. I saved up $300 in an old metal band aid tin to buy my waterbed when I was 14. Paid a little extra for the mirror in the center bookshelf in anticipation of sexy time. Had Porsche posters and the classic study hard poster. Those were the days!!!

The husband had one before we got married. Then we had the same one for the first ten or so years of our marriage. He had a stroke after we'd been married for 8 years and it was a full wave waterbed and he had so much trouble trying to get out of the bed that we had to switch to a regular bed. (he's paralyzed on his right side). We only had to replace the water-bladder-whatever twice (once when we were stationed in Georgia and again after we ended up in Wisconsin. The original and first replacement had gotten moldy in storage).

I didn’t (56f). My mom’s second husband-great guy. They married when I was 18-he moved into our house when I was 17 in 1987. He had one and moved it in. They had it for like 2 years until my mom couldn’t take it anymore. I tried it out. Hated it. Sadly, he passed from cancer in 2008. I have no idea what was done with the bed! In like 1989.

I did, and it was one of the cheaper ones that didn't have wave-dampening compartments, so one slight movement would result in waves for all infinity. Also, it was cold despite the heating element being cranked to max.
