What Is Being Poor Actually Like in the UK?

Posted by retsuko_h4x@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 587 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

We're far better off being poor here than in the US. No matter how poor you are here you'll still have access to Dr's and medicine. While elderly people are having to work longer now they still wouldn't have to work until they're 80 unless they're maintaining an expensive lifestyle. We have a state pension that's topped up with another benefit of its not enough, plus rent is paid, they get free bus travel, free eye tests, dental care and medications.. Plus all the same healthcare as they've always had. I'm poor and can't work due to disabilities but I get benefits that mean I won't starve or be homeless. Most of my rent is paid and I get free medications and obviously free healthcare, although it's certainly not enough to live well. I can't afford holidays or luxuries and my clothes are all basic primark or temu stuff. Poor here is far more livable than poor in the US.

What "cereal" is served in a Full English Breakfast?

Yeh cereal isn't part of a full English breakfast. Years ago long before the teachers were properly born people might have had porridge before the fried food but I wouldn't call porridge cereal 🤔

What does four bunk beds mean to you?

Posted by Active_SeriZZLEAF@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 318 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

Depends on how your thinking about the bunk beds. Is it 4 sets of bunk beds? In which case that's 8 beds so obviously 8 mattresses. But if it's 2 sets of bunk beds then that's 4 bed so 4 mattresses.

What's the etiquette for the priority bus seats?

Posted by ScaryButt@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 228 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

They said the higher seats give them motion sickness, there's plenty of low seats. Although it is a valid reason to sit in a priority seat. But there's other low seats at the front of the bus that aren't priority ones.

What's the etiquette for the priority bus seats?

Posted by ScaryButt@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 228 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

Regardless of who that person was or how they said it they don't know if you need that seat or not. I take huge issue with people who like to play the disability police. But as a disabled person who can manage at times with any seat I'd say it's best to not sit there if the bus isn't full, not all disabled people will say anything and will struggle to another seat. I have social anxiety so no matter how much I needed the seat I wouldn't ask someone to move. If the bus is full then sit wherever but move if someone clearly needs it.... But imo that's not just disabled people, it's old people, people who may not look disabled but look like they're struggling in some way, including pregnant women. But that's my opinion lol the general etiquette is to never sit in the priority seats unless the bus is full, simply so people who need them don't have to ask because not all disabilities are visible... None of mine are. I look ok, but I'm far from it.

Unless the shop is on a beach then yeh it's inappropriate. Look around you, do you see others walking around in bikinis? That answers your question.

Is there an official record of deaths in the UK?

Posted by C-i-d@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 70 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

Yes but you have to apply for a death certificate to find out the details. Although you can probably look it up on somewhere like Ancestry but won't see the full record, just enough to get the required information for a death certificate. I have an Ancestry subscription so could look it up for you of you message me the details... Name, place of death ect.

In general, how is Paddington Bear viewed in the UK?

Paddington wasn't born in the UK, he's from Peru! But yeh he's more of a kids thing and not really that huge anymore. I mean if you're expecting Paddington adorned everything you'll be disappointed and any merch is usually reserved for specialist shops.

I know some schools can be way too much.. My adult son was messing about with some sucking lip plumper thing and put it in my daughters son's face! It left a huge love bite type bruise on his cheek that looked like he'd been punched, next day a teacher asked him about it and he said my uncle did it.. Next thing safeguarding is ringing my daughter saying they want to investigate it 🙄 total overboard reaction but they wouldn't let it go. My son had to ring the school to tell them nobody hit him and it was just him messing about. But you really did nothing wrong, don't worry about it.

Why do we get no votes in the eurovision song contest?

Posted by yes-this-is-my-name@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1061 comments

A bit of politics and lots of shite songs and singers. I've always thought of them as slightly less good than the singer who sings at the working men's club every weekend.

Where would you hide the following sized items at home? A SIM card/ microSD, an orange, and a bag of sugar

Posted by DamMofoUsername@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 170 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

Sugar I'd dissolve in water.. Obviously only if I know I'm getting busted. The sim card is I'd make a cake of some bread maybe, squish it right in then freeze it. One look at my crammed freezer would put anyone off emptying it to look for something that tiny. I'd slice the orange up and put it in my 30 yo bowl of pot pouri. My ex sold weed many moons ago and thought he had all the good hiding places... Inside a speaker was his fave. He would roll money up and slide it into the hem of curtains (lol an irrelevant story.. I once put prawns in the hem of an exes bedroom curtains 😂) or socks he then rolled into pairs. He wasn't that good because we got busted and they found most of the weed and money... Although they were looking for weed (they knew he grew it) and for some reason completely missed the huge bar of squidgy black sitting in a drawer in the living room.

Should I not be asking my adult kids to pay rent?

Posted by ProfessionalCamel110@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 913 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

If they're working they should pay rent and contribute to the bills. It's irrelevant if your son is hardly there if he had his own home he'd still have to pay rent if he wasn't there. I'd be charging him a lot more than £25 a week! Although there's the legalities of it and you claiming benefits, you're probably committing fraud because if you've got 2 working adults living with you uc won't pay your rent, they expect the working people to do so.

Do British people not feel the cold?

Posted by DevelopmentLow214@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1764 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

Your cold and Yorkshire cold are completely different. Today is not a big coat day, maybe a jacket at a push but most people will be fine with a jumper. But there is something in your question about us being bred this way lol bring a southerner to Yorkshire and they'll be wearing their big coat and complaining it's cold, which is why we call them southern softies. As for people sitting outside a cafe when there are seats inside... We rarely get the chance to sit outside cos it rains so much, so when its not raining, the sun is shining and it's not big coat weather then you can bet your aunt Ethels bloomers that we'll make the most of it and not sit inside.

How can I dispose of a dead pet?

Posted by tigralfrosie@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 435 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

A, vet will but they'll charge you. They charge storage/cremation costs, as grim as it is they will put the cat in the freezer until collection day. If you want the ashes then that will be a huge cost, but be warned if you do that, you're not just getting your cats ashes, it's literally a mix of whatever goes in the incinerator at the same time. Individual cremation is for the very wealthy. I'd ask a friend, or maybe go into the sticks and bury it out of the way? I buried a cat in my local woods once, and just make sure it's deep or else something will dig it up. I've got a dead corn snake to dispose of, like you I have nowhere to bury it plus, it's a snake that I have no real emotional attachment to so burying it doesn't seem like a priority 🤷‍♀️

Posted by holytriplem@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1002 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

Not in the same way as they used to be a thing. Lots of places don't have them, they do deliver in my area but they won't deliver to me because I live in a block of flats. They say the will deliver it but will only leave it outside the main entrance, usually about 4am...that means I'd have to get up and collect it immediately because by 6am it would be stolen. It's also twice the price of milk in the shops.

Does everyone in the UK have a big mirror in the living room?

Posted by Sexy-Dumbledore@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 482 comments

No. That's like asking if everyone in America lives in a homestead lol While it's not uncommon it's not something every single person has. I had one above the fireplace in my last house but I couldn't even see in it because it was too high, but it made the tiny room look a bit bigger. I don't have one now. It used to be pretty common years ago but not anymore.

What are your thoughts on dogs in restaurants/cafes?

Posted by BurnsyWurnsy@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 850 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

I don't want dogs slobbering next to me while I'm eating, I don't really like dog's and some breeds scare me... So no. But it also depends on the place, if I'm out in the sticks then I tend to expect it to happen, especially in a pub. But in a city, absolutely not. It's gross when you consider the dogs owners and how slack many people are.

Making others uncomfortable doesn't matter, if they're uncomfortable the that's a them problem. The question is do you feel comfortable? If so then that's all that matters, nobody can tell you it's unacceptable to get your scars out in public no matter how they were made.

Do you have retirement communities for people age 55+?

Posted by joaofava@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 107 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

I live I live in one! Well basically it's a high rise block of flats that's probably one of the nicest in the entire city, so they made sure to keep it that way and only give flats to people over 55. Although I was 52 when I moved in so they're not strict. Most of the tenants are elderly but there's a few my age. I didn't choose to live here so I could socialise with oldies, I simply needed to move to this area and was offered this flat. Nobody here socialises with each other, we have a communal room downstairs that's full of books about the the Queen and Queen Mother, old jigsaws from the 70s and a bunch of faded fake flowers... It smells like an old person's care home.

U.k Cat owners, are your cats indoor, outdoor or combination?

Posted by Fit-Choice2368@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 241 comments

dreadwitch@reddit

Indoor cats aren't the norm, walking a cat on a fucking lead is not only ridiculous it's cruel. Cats are everywhere and always have been, looking out of my window right now I can see 7 cats without trying to find them. Where people live is irrelevant beyond the city centre, although I've seen cats in town before hunting the wild rabbits that also live there.. Maybe those cats are feral though. I live next to a very busy road, its one of the main roads into the city, that doesn't stop people having outdoor cats. I've had cats all my life and they've all gone out, currently I have an indoor cat, mostly because I live on the 9th floor so letting him out isn't really possible but he's also scared of his own shadow so wouldn't go outside if I begged him to.
