What does four bunk beds mean to you?

Posted by Active_SeriZZLEAF@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 318 comments

Does it mean 4 mattresses or 8 mattresses? We're having a fierce argument.

The word 'bunk' doesn't feel like a real word now, I've read it so many times

What's the counter argument? It's 8. Anything else is objectively wrong.
View on Reddit #87057625

hulyepicsa@reddit

I was gonna say something similar. Saying 4 bunk beds is 4 mattresses is absolutely unhinged behaviour. Straight to jail (where they might find some bunk beds to count) But yea, the type of bed is called a bunk bed. That is a type of bed that has 2 levels. I’m sorry I’m so upset by this!!!
View on Reddit #87058305

Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit

But...🧐 A bunk bed = 1 bed/1 level. "We sleep in bunk beds" (two beds, plural) "This is my bunk bed" (one bed, singular) You can only sleep 1 person per bed, typically. So if you have four bunk BEDS is is four mattresses.
View on Reddit #87059691

babushka1705@reddit

This is just incorrect and also isn't what people say. They'd say we sleep in a bunk bed. We shared a bunk bed etc... And i say this as someone who grew up sharing a bunk bed with their sibling and has therefore said this a thousand times 😂
View on Reddit #87061206

Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit

If you told me "We shared a bunk bed" I would assume you are sleeping two to a mattress. You don't have to specify "sharing" in the context where one person is sleeping on each bunk. That is assumed.
View on Reddit #87061469

babushka1705@reddit

Of course you do - I knew people growing up who had their own bunk beds (and their own bedrooms) and the fact that my sister and I shared one would therefore be relevant. You're definitely incorrect x
View on Reddit #87061625

Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit

What mad parent is proving their single child with two vertical beds? I suppose I'm not speaking to a child now (?) as an adult "sharing" any kind of bed implies being on the same mattress. If we were renting a room (in this fucking weird scenario 😂) and there were two bunks, I wouldn't say "we're sharing bunk beds" I'd just say "were sleeping in bunks" or "there are bunk beds".
View on Reddit #87061957

Dietcokeisgod@reddit

I had a bunk bed that I didn't share. I kept all my teddies on the bottom bunk and slept on the top. I used the bottom more like a sofa (but it wasn't)

Haha. I love the idea that a 6 year old would have a whole separate bed for like... visualising their outfits for the week 💁🏼‍♀️
View on Reddit #87062729

cyberllama@reddit

Did you grow up without friends or something? If you had a bunk bed that wasn't shared with a sibling, like half my mates did when I was a kid, you could use the lower one for the inevitable fuckton of cuddly toys or as seating when your friends were round yours. Sometimes, you could even have a friend sleep over and there's a spare bed for them right there. Insanity!
View on Reddit #87075712

lovemycat02@reddit

Tbf I had a bunk bed as a kid but the bottom level was a sofa (could turn into a double bed). I just used it for reading and stuff. Was pretty cool.
View on Reddit #87069371

babushka1705@reddit

I feel like everyone had bunk beds in the 90s but the point isn't about sharing anyway the point is about one bunk bed referring to the whole structure and therefore two mattresses 😂 it's insane to suggest otherwise. If you google bunk bed you'll notice that everywhere is selling you a bunk bed (singular) and that contains two mattresses.
View on Reddit #87062271

chocklityclair@reddit

But you have just described a single level of a bunk bed as a 'bunk.' So you're differentiating between 'bunk' (one mattress) and 'bunk bed' which is the entire piece of furniture?

View on Reddit #87067380

Tonythepillow@reddit

I think we’d all accept triple beds as a bunk bed but you’d always specify this, you’re not getting away with calling a bed a bunk bed though sorry. That’s just a bed.
View on Reddit #87089296

Vivid_Sun_5636@reddit

Ahh, downvotes due to ignorance. Good old reddit. Triple bunk beds are common and still called bunk beds. A single bunk bed is not just a bed. Usually part of a modular system where the top bunk remains the same, but the bottom bunk is convertible into a sofa, or removable for a desk or open space. Or where you can buy the lower bunk later, or swap for a double bunk at the bottom, or add a third bunk as a rollaway under the lower bunk. Again still sold as bunk beds.
View on Reddit #87092836

Tonythepillow@reddit

We agree about the triple bunk bed then. You can call it a badly printed copy of the Daily Telegraph if you want but I’d hope you can understand why it would be pretty foolish to use the term bunk beds in day to day life if each one has less than 2 mattresses, regardless of how fancy the pull out desk is.
View on Reddit #87092985

Vivid_Sun_5636@reddit

My kids slept in a bunk bed. Later, one moved to his own room and we removed the bottom bunk. Does that change the name of the thing my older boy has slept in for years? I don:t think there is a problem with it still be referred to as a bunk bed. Now - enough of this pointless discussion. Back to the main question, if someone said there were 4 bunk beds in a room, I would assume either 4 or 8 sleeping places depending on context - in a hostel or military camp, I would assume 8, but for a hotel or house or train, I think would picture 4 sleeping places (2 sets of 2 bunks) without more info; having 8 beds in a room in a house would be fairly unusual.

That's the American answer, and correct in America. A bunk bed is a bed that has two mattresses, one on top and one below, in the UK. That is also a very normal definition of the term. They both make sense. It's just awkward! Though it could lead to romcom-style mistakes, so there's an upside...

I see "4 bunk beds" as short for "4 beds arranged in stack". You're obsessing over the metal frame when it doesn't make sense to do so. "I slept in a bunk bed last night" ... "oh you mean you slept in a half-a-bunk-bed didn't you Michael u lying shit".

Depends on how your thinking about the bunk beds. Is it 4 sets of bunk beds? In which case that's 8 beds so obviously 8 mattresses. But if it's 2 sets of bunk beds then that's 4 bed so 4 mattresses.
View on Reddit #87104211

I dont think they could have been any clearer. Single bed - one person Double bed - two person Bunk bed - two person usually but one on top of eachother therefore, 4 bunk beds = 8 beds ( 4 of which are on top of the other 4)

Nannyhirer@reddit

You don’t call a singular bunk bed unit with 2 mattresses ‘two bunk beds’ So by that logic 2 units wouldn’t be referred to as ‘four bunk beds. It’s: a bunk bed = 2 mattresses 2 bunk beds = 4 mattresses 3 bunk beds = 6 mattresses 4 bunk beds = 8 mattresses 5 bunk beds = 10 mattresses

I agree with you. "4 bunk beds" doesn't mean 4 metal bed frames and therefore 8 beds/places... it's a shortening of the phrase "4 bunk bed places" - that is there are 4 beds that happen to be arranged in "bunk mode" as opposed to on the ground.

Message the owner to check if there are actually 2 or 4 beds because they could be zip-link beds that each split into 2 singles. No, they are both double beds. A bunk bed by definition is a singular bed structure with more than one separate mattress/sleeping spot on it. The individual spots are bunks. Would you say 'two bunk beds' in your top picture or 'a bunk bed'? By that definition, does 'a bunk bed' even exist as that would just be a bed???

1 bunk bed is 2 beds, it's a like 1 pair of socks, it's two socks. Bunk is basically saying double it. Four bunk beds would mean eight mattresses to me. A bunk bed in the singular sense includes both the upstairs and downstairs. There's a HUGE difference between "4 bunks" and "4 bunk beds". The first is clearly 4 mattresses/space for 4 people. The second strongly implies 4 actual bunk beds, where a "bunk bed" is 2 mattresses one-above-the-other, so 8 mattresses total/space for 8 people. So to answer the wording in your title; it means 8 people can sleep individually.

To respond to your edit OP. If I'm told 4 bunks... that means 4 beds. But in your original question you asked what 4 **bunk beds** mean. A Bunk bed is made up of 2 bunks. So 4 bunk beds means 8 bunks. I'm going to assume the reason for the argument is **miscommunication over what word was said and what word was heard** As an example, A airbnb listing should say how many it sleeps, not how many beds/bunks there are. So a property with 3 bedrooms, one has a double bed and the other two have 2 bunk beds each, would sleep 10 people. The same property described as, 3 bedrooms, one has a double bed and the other two have 2 bunks each, would sleep 6. Miscommunication happens when it is described as 3 bedrooms, one has a double bed and the other two have 2 beds(bunked) each.

I think it depends on context. I think there is a difference between "bunk beds" and "a bunk bed" If someone said to me "I have four bunk beds" i would assume space to sleep 4 people. In this context a bunk is a space to sleep. You have four of them. It could be one rack of four beds (yeah, it'd be high, but threes are fairly common), or two racks of two, or whatever. The configuration doesn't matter. If I was going to the shop to buy "a bunk bed" it would commonly have two mattresses. If the wife sent me out to buy "four bunk beds" I would come back with 4 units and probably 8 mattresses, because in this context "a bunk bed" is a specific thing.

If you book a "bunk bed" in a hostel you don't get the whole set, and similarly I doubt you'd say you'd shared "a bed" with a stranger if you stayed in one. If I was ever trying to communicate there was 8 sleeping surfaces I'd say "4 sets of bunk beds", personally, feels less ambiguous.

It seems straightforward to me. One bunk bed would surely refer to two mattresses (otherwise you'd just say bed), so four bunk beds is eight.

Maybe they are thinking of a cabin bed i had one growing up. Just think of like the top bunk minus the bottom. With like a desk or something there instead.

I would say eight. And, may indicate a house of multiple occupation..
View on Reddit #87058775

A bunk bed is a two storey bed - one frame, two mattresses. Four bunk beds are four of those, eight mattresses. Depending on what you are reading this in reference to, I can see some confusion creeping in however. A dorm room may list 'beds' or 'sleeps x' and give you the amount of mattresses (not specifying whether they are srandard or bunk beds), or note 'four bunk beds' which I would expect to mean eight mattresses...

A standard bunk bed has two single mattresses Mathematically solved as 4*2=8

I’d say 4 mattresses… it’s 4 beds, but saying 4 “bunk beds” lets you know they’re on top of each other and not normal bed setup

4 bunk beds, 8 bunks Beds = number of frames Bunks = number of mattresses Then bunk beds exist with a bigger than single mattress, I've slept in one with a double below and single above So that one bunk bed would be 1 bunk bed, 2 bunks, 3 'berths'?

8... A bunk bed is two beds, otherwise it'd be just a bed. So 4 bunk beds would sleep 8. Of course. Nothing to argue about. Whoever says 4 is wrong. Only possibility of rescuing the reputation of the person saying it'd be 4 mattresses is if it was described as 4 beds comprised of 2 bunkbeds, OR 4 bunks (not with the -bed).

There are 4 beds that happen to be laid out as bunks one on top of the other. So I would take that as 4 places to sleep on 2 bedframes.

It means no sleep for eight people and multiple rounds of rock paper scissors to determine who gets the bottom bunk.
View on Reddit #87057714

Ecstatic_Effective42@reddit

I would say the definition of a bunk bed is one or more beds stacked on top of another. So four bunk beds would be at least 8 actual beds (mattresses)
