Ever wonder how many traditions, recipes, warnings of familial diseases and memories were lost because our baby boomer parents were too unconvinced to share that information with us?

My one grandma never wrote things down either and I would love to be able to make her dishes. My other gramdmother did write them down and my mom took them and won't let anyone have them. My mom can't even cook.

I asked to have the family tree once and was told no you'll have fun figuring that out yourself. So, never could do it as it would involve traveling get around a country I don't live in to small villages for information and finding graveyards.

Do you have a stronger accent than your parents?

Posted by fakename137@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 102 comments

NotAnotherThing@reddit

Will answer in reverse as I am the parent instead. Husband is British (midlands), I am Canadian (my kids can't hear my accent, by the way). My kids were raised living in London then moving to the south coast. They both have quite neutral south accents with the odd word said as I would say it instead.

I have a class photo of preschool so yes. Photo was a bit funny. There were only 6 children. Teacher and 5 on one side of the bench, me on the complete other side alone. Clearly I didn't want to be there.

Your workplace is completely unreasonable. Where I am you need a sick note to 1) be entitled to sick pay, 2) justify time off, and 3) prove you aren't a health and safety risk returning to work. Here doctor's notes are back dated to the start of an illness and do generally take up to.a week to arrive.

Did I offend my neighbour, strange experience?

Posted by ProfessionalNewt7@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 52 comments

NotAnotherThing@reddit

Maybe he js paranoid about signing things and now feels unsafe about what he did. Our neighbors made the same request of my husband including needing a second signature and it was fine with us. Maybe drop your neighbor a note explaining what they signed and provide the business contact information if they want to verify? I don't know if that might make them feel better, maybe they are scared they are liable for something rather than just a witness.

Yes!! My mom was the one to demonize me since I was thereabouts 2. Apparently I refused to wear knitted clothes or whatnot out of spite. They were probably itchy.

"Strong willed child" was mom's explanation for everything she did to me. By the way, I am the only one who never rebelled, never broke the rules, supposedly did everything right. But I was the only one not to accept lies which she didn't like.

Unfortunately, I don't think spanking children has died out at all. I didn't spank my children but plenty of people around me spanked theirs. I also have encountered a lot of people ready to argue that spanking is necessary, never harmed them, or warned me my kids would run rampant if I kept on as I was.

I told my family they can donate me to science. I think funeral costs are extortionate and a burden on many families. I don't want mine to have that. They can remember me as they choose to instead without extra costs involved.

Hello, fellow Canadian here who has lived in the UK a couple of decades. Nothing is ever "too much" here. Rain is gentle, thunder is quiet, hot spells aren't too long, cold spells aren't actually too cold, ice barely lasts, grass is pretty much always green. Just generally mild. If you don't like it it won't last long so it's ok. I don't own a proper winter coat, no scarves or tuques, no winter boots (just good socks and rubber boots).
