imspirationMoveMe@reddit
I referred to something as “clutch” today. Anyone remember that one?
cablestuman@reddit
I remember Gank be used to describe stealing something. As in I ganked a Walkman from radioshack
thepuncroc@reddit
Taking something, yes
Like taking a life, as example and so it later gets miscondtrued to just mean kill.

I learned that gank meant either stealing or a surprise attack, but since Supernatural started airing in the mid-aughts, it's shifted to a surprise attack that kills.
Outlaw_Josie_Snails@reddit
This is how I rember hearing the term, for stealing.
PapslappyMcfee@reddit
This!
Whole_Craft_1106@reddit
Who said gank?! Never heard that one
SnooChipmunks2079@reddit
I heard it from a teen who worked for me in the mid 90’s.
Comfortable-Yak-8691@reddit
Gank (v): to steal. “That guy ganked my bike!”
ZombieCrow13@reddit
That's the way we use it. "I ganked his shoes and he had to ride his bicycle home from the pool bare footed." laugh
It implies a practical joke type of theft.
Whole_Craft_1106@reddit
Ok. Never heard that in my life
Puzzleheaded_Fuel787@reddit
It must be a West coast thing. I've never even heard anyone use it here tho. Only in NWA songs.
thepuncroc@reddit
It existed in snooty new England prep schools in the 90s.
Don't think it was a West Coast thing, though some decent percentage were from West Coast
Puzzleheaded_Fuel787@reddit
Arizona native and a few kids in high school used it after we were introduced to NWA but it faded quickly. It didn't stick. It's fun going back listening to 80s and 90s stuff and hearing the fad words at the times :)
wyohman@reddit
I've never heard this before
Empty_Nestor@reddit
Sure, it’s from Brass on Pocket by The Pretenders. It means a TV broadcast. You know the line: “Got a news gank, so reet…”
I’ll see myself out…
Cleverironicusername@reddit
Werd?!
WeirdcoolWilson@reddit
Did we ever say, “Gank”? I had to look up what this meant
East-Garden-4557@reddit
I certainly didn't say gank or yo.

Melissaschwart@reddit
My cousins son says bet.it kinda gets on my nerves 😬
Far_Kiwi_692@reddit
But it's better than 6/7, right?
Melissaschwart@reddit
He is 31 years old now if he was to start saying 6/7 i would probably bury him 6ft below.my 7 year old grandson says 6/7.it’s the stupidest shit word ever said
Far_Kiwi_692@reddit
🤣
Rungi500@reddit
Short for "you bet". So you are correct.
HA1LHYDRA@reddit
Bets was short for better that up. Its from early/mid 90s. Its was an acknowledgement of a sure thing, as in you could bet on it.
bistro223@reddit
I knew someone that said bet all the time in like 1998
notorious_lx@reddit
You betcha!
ResistNecessary8109@reddit

I worked with this young kid a while back. He came into work one day and I gave him an upward nod of the head and said, "Sup." He was, like, "What?" He seemed to genuinely not know what I had said. So I said it again. He looked at me like he was trying to translate a foreign language then slowly he responds with a slight upward nod and says" Sup" back at me. I felt the generations coming together just a little bit that day.

I hate the change in "crashing/crashed out" How else do I describe the 5 hour nap I took today? I literally crashed out for 5 hours. If I said that to a kid they would think I meant I went on some kind of super long temper tantrum.
RemyJe@reddit
They’re not too dissimilar. I wouldn’t say “crashing out” for 5 hours though, just “crashed.”
Fluffymanolo@reddit
I woke up and found the time and, in my head, thought "wow, I really crashed out"
Electric-Sheepskin@reddit

This really shows the divide in Gen X. Some of us were in school for the death of Rock and the rise of Hip Hop and Rap, the rest were adults with responsibilities. I love Van Halen, but Eruption was just a REALLY cool solo because I had heard all the imitators at the same time. Music that was truly different and mind blowing? Extra points for pissing off parents who pissed off their parents with rock? The album starts with “You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge”. Mind blown.

They were SUPER grossed out by what I was saying because they thought I meant my DAD.
I’ll admit, saying “my old man” or “my old lady” is a VERY old thing—started by boomers. But I heard it growing up so I adopted it once he really WAS an old man 🤪🤪🤪🤣
But apparently the youths don’t get it.

No, they say bro.
Constantly. To everyone. For everything.
My daughter called me bro.
NaDarach@reddit
Reddit, I see bro the most from Gen Zers. I only ever use bruh, myself. "Bro" always referred more to Black people where I lived back in the day. Bruh was more universal.
Quiet_File_11@reddit
Mine calls me bro or girl. I call her dude.
Historical_Bath_9854@reddit
I call both my parents dude 🤣😂🤣 I call everyone dude.
Just-Finish5767@reddit
Are you me?
Quiet_File_11@reddit
Maybe. You 1/3 Pirate on yer mamma's side? In all fairness, the kids heard me calling everybody Brother and Buddy their whole lives.
Just-Finish5767@reddit
Not 1/3, sadly, no. But I do have Ruari MacNeil, the Pirate Laird of Kisimul Castle, on me mam’s side. My kids were just kiddo, and every poor driver on the road is “my dude”
mumtoant@reddit
I hear bruh from my students, not bro.
w1lnx@reddit
See? Showing my age. We used to say "bro". But it has, indeed, morphed into "bruh".
And then there are those who pronounce the abbreviation "bros." instead of saying "brothers". But that's a separate rant.
Iammine4420@reddit
I’ve been responding by calling them sis.
Rays_LiquorSauce@reddit

Solid_Association_49@reddit

SkyRepresentative309@reddit
or cuh!
kevbayer@reddit
"Bro" is usually a friendly or affectionate direct address: "Bro! What's up?!" "Check out this bro!" "Take it easy Bro"
"Bruh" is kind of like "I am Groot" as it's much more versatile and can have various meanings and functions depending on context and tone of voice, is often sarcastic, and can often take the place of a complete sentence.
Some examples: "Bruh"
"Bruh"
"Bruh"
See the difference?

Maybe it's regional?
Dramatic_Wear_6948@reddit
It started as regional because it was used a lot in early 90s rap (mostly cali) but also made its way (at least in my social circles) into southeast slang. I suppose it would have more to do with music exposure. I’ve also used jank and janky lol
Slight-Selection4298@reddit

Altus76@reddit
To gank is to steal. Like if I asked someone for a lighter, lit my cigarette and then pocketed the lighter when you later realized you didn’t have it you might say “that guy ganked my lighter”.
Among my social group at least we also used the word gaffle which meant that you did the exact same thing but unintentionally. “Sorry man, I didn’t mean to gank your lighter, I just gaffled it.”
It usually referred to smaller objects. Not like stealing a car.
RealCrazySwordGirl@reddit
Haha, well in gamer culture to gank is to ambush, usually a bunch of foes on one player. Gang kill.
In my day we used "teef" as you used "gaffle" 😄 "don't teef my lighter, dude!"
Altus76@reddit
Way later usage though. We were using that term before realtime online gaming existed. I’m familiar with it as I came up in the early online gaming culture.
I am curious how that happened. If it evolved from steal (like that dude stole my life) if it developed independently and just used the same word/sound it certainly is an odd evolution.

omysweede@reddit
What is "gank" says a 50 year old.
Electric-Sheepskin@reddit
I guess to a lot of people it means to steal something—"that dude ganked my lighter"—but I never heard it used that way.
We used it a lot in gaming culture. It meant that you were ambushed or easily overpowered by a stronger opponent or bigger numbers. "I was heading out to the frontier, but I got ganked by an assassin."
Altus76@reddit
I’m 49 and we used it a lot. Were you a stoner? I associate it with stoner culture mostly.
OkArmy7059@reddit
Means the same as gaffle
Altus76@reddit
In my circle gaffle always meant unintentionally while gank was malicious
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
...which it largely replaced.
I have held on to both, though I vastly prefer gaffle.
I also use horked in both its connotations, "having greedily consumed" and "stole".
sanctimoniousfsck@reddit
I still say gaffle!!
chrissymae_i@reddit
It means "steal". As in, you ganked my pencil. 49 years old here.
cleveland_leftovers@reddit
Same. 51F.
Ex: Who the bell ganked my Zima?
Takara38@reddit
44, still use it all the time.
DeepGreenThumbs@reddit
When we used it in the nineties in a computer programming context, it meant "delete with prejudice", to make something irrevocably no longer exist. However, apparently gamers were using it at the same time, for a variety of vaguely related meanings (steal, frag, ambush, etc).
barb_dylan@reddit
51 here. We used that a lot on the 90s. Or somewhere between then and now.
SkibidiBlender@reddit
My daughter was explaining “yeet” and I told her it would never be as cool as chuck or huck.
Fluffymanolo@reddit
I find it funny when it's used in a funny context? How do I explain this... It's when someone tosses and item that's really too big to be tossed. For example, "he yeeted that car right out the window"
Majik_Sheff@reddit
They do say yoink though. So we got that.
Rays_LiquorSauce@reddit
Thought it was Yeet
lazertittiesrrad@reddit
The Lord yeeteth and the Lord yoinketh away
Salty_Pancakes@reddit
Are things still on fleek though?
lazertittiesrrad@reddit
I care not for this "fleek" you speak of.
I come from the before times. When things were tubular and gnarly to the max and Dudes were excellent to each other
Salty_Pancakes@reddit
I still say groovy. And maybe it was just my neck of the woods, but we also said stoney.
Deer-in-Motion@reddit
Yoink is the opposite of yeet. Pulling towards instead of throwing away.
Majik_Sheff@reddit
That's the opposite of yoink. I've heard both used.
cgram23@reddit
I’m 52. I’ve never heard anyone say gank. Ever.
Couldbelater@reddit
You never heard of anyone getting their duckets ganged?
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
Ducat: "universal trade currency" first introduced by the Florentines in the early Renaissance; has peaked and valleyed in popularity in the intervening years, but has always retained its meaning as money. Literally, for several centuries following their inception, figuratively since the coins stopped being minted.
Couldbelater@reddit
Duckets: Slang for money, funds, or riches (derived from "ducats," historical gold coins)
Can’t be caught using ducats these days, not in this economy.
cgram23@reddit
Duckets I know. Ganged isn’t ganked tho. Unless OP forgot his readers when he typed this.
Couldbelater@reddit
I had ganked, meant ganked and the last second, Siri said NOPE. lol
cgram23@reddit
Fcking Siri.
But no. Never heard it.
Couldbelater@reddit
NWA and Eazy E days
Couldbelater@reddit
Siri autocorrect hasn’t either
Callec254@reddit
As part of the following generation of 51 year olds, yes, we used it extensively.
Sly3n@reddit
Me either😂
temerairevm@reddit
Born in 71 and have never heard that word.
TLKimball@reddit
Have you played WoW on a PvP server?
temerairevm@reddit
Nope. I think I was in grad school in that era and already on the computer way too much so when I wasn’t working I wanted to be outside staring at grass and trees.
Slipstream_Surfing@reddit
Exactly. Pretty big difference in experiences between us early X and those born late 70s.
Also, assuming this is World of Warcraft being referenced, the youngest GenX would've been 25 in 2004. A bit old to be adopting gank into one's vernacular, in my opinion.
upsidedown-funnel@reddit
Thats exactly where my mind goes. Needed a good guild for pvp severs.
Goodrun31@reddit
I texted a younger person I was going to crash the other day meaning go to sleep, and woke up to texts asking if I was Ok and was everything alright.
Distinct-Lynx-2063@reddit
What about "mark a$$ biaatch"?
Milesotooleaudio@reddit
Gank, if I remember properly, was the proto- yoink
At0mJack@reddit
Yoink is the noise you make when you gank something.
thorneparke@reddit
This is the textbook definition, right here.
See also: "snatch-pops"
auntieup@reddit
This is an example of correct usage
Arielist@reddit
the children also do not know the meaning of gacked, although that might be because so many of them don't party the way we used to 👵
xRVAx@reddit
Also, gleeking
thorneparke@reddit
Oh God, "gleek". You just brought back a flood of memories. No pun intended....
overmonk@reddit

Hobgoblins83@reddit
Yoink

Pretty sure I've never said "gank" in my life. Had to look it up.
Big_Gassy_Possum@reddit
Checking in from Southern Cali....My brother and I (49 & 51) still use it. Often.
Someone ganked your favorite parking spot. You're eating lunch and your wife ganks a french fry. You get up to get a beer and the dog ganks your spot on the coach.
Zendarrroni@reddit
Yeah, gank was always, to steal, in the southern US when I was growing up.
ZookeepergameOwn8573@reddit
They also look at you weird if you mention gang bangers.
implicate@reddit
Yo, they don't even say 'gaffle,' either!
Training_Salad_5301@reddit

_thekev@reddit
Sup homes? Ganked any hot warez lately? Yo, I got this dope flick I'll swap ya for. Hook me up. Like don't bogart the stash man.
Generally_Tso_Tso@reddit
It works in that context.
bemenaker@reddit
Same meaning. It means to steal.
bigpapirick@reddit
Gank was used in gangsta rap interchangeably with jacked to imply being took, robbed, accosted etc.
For reference see Ice Cube’s lyrics including “when will they shoot?”, “Ghetto Bird.
Also 2Pac’s infamous “Hit ‘em Up” refers to it in the same way.
7GrenciaMars@reddit
Props to the guy with the references, yo. 😁
BraveG365@reddit
I have noticed that a lot of the younger guys like to use "boss"....it be like "hey boss" or "ok boss"....and this is not in a job setting.
marshallkrich@reddit
Andre the Giant use to say boss to everyone in the from the 70s till he died. Doubt he's the reason though.
Ivotedforher@reddit
How big would you have to be to be bigger than Andre?
marshallkrich@reddit
Think he was legit 7'2
PrairieGrrl5263@reddit
What is this "gank" of which you speak?
ep3dmik@reddit
Gang basically means "took", or "you got took/taken."
"I ganked his Reebok pumps and Jordans while he was sleeping."
Duggeek@reddit
Sounds too much like "dank" to be used in casual convos, really throws the vibe.
PrairieGrrl5263@reddit
Ah. Thank you, kind Xer.

smellmyfinger22@reddit
Same goes for "fresh" or "rad." I enter this sub at my own risk and more often than not I end up wishing I could go back on a permanent basis. Hopefully, I'll be alive when someone cracks the code to time travel because I'll be the first one to volunteer to go even if they're still working out the kinks and I might end up coming back with three heads or thirty fingers.

I seem to recall using "gank" to mean to steal or rob, somewhere like late 80s to mid 90s, then later on, I remember in the mid 2000s people were using it again in video games when they would get jumped by other players in PVP, usually referring to a much higher level player or a group of players jumping or "ganking" a low level player
Impressive-Yak-7449@reddit
I know it from video games as well

Rungi500@reddit
Yep. Might have been localized. NEast coast US and we used gank then.

texan01@reddit
Yo that gank is jank.
I always thought it mean to yank or grab.
DaCarolinaKidd@reddit
Gank does mean rob so you’re close
MaximumJones@reddit
When we were young "gank" meant stealing something.
Today it is a video game term for when a player of much high level (or a group of players together) kill your character who is alone or much lower level.
"Dude, I was level 17 minding my own business just trying to level up when I got ganked by two level 80s"
