Oh geez, I got a letter from a dermatologist about 6 years ago telling me I had several mole types that demonstrated I’m a high risk for melanoma. I sort of shrugged it off as “oh, well he needs money and repeat customers”, now I’m sort of nervous

Question from the uk. Do Americans roll their own cigarettes?

Posted by ExpectRelentless@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 320 comments

Congregator@reddit

I worked at a tobacco shop in the U.S. for quite sometime. There are a collection of people that roll their own cigarettes: some for preference, some as a hobby, and others to save $$$. You’ll have the people that buy the machines that pack the pre-rolled cigarettes, people with the machines with the unrolled paper, and then people who manually roll their cigarettes by hand.

why do americans talk to strangers so easily??

Posted by MayaTulip268@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 2198 comments

Congregator@reddit

So, part of American mentality when in line at a store is akin to “we’re all in this together”. Like “we are all looking at the prices going up” Or even “this is great service” to “they changed the recipe in that brand of sauce”… It’s a sort of camaraderie amongst strangers sharing an experience.

Which US state has the blandest food?

Posted by supinator1@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 252 comments

Congregator@reddit

I don’t think it works quite like this, per the states. Why? States are full of a lot of different types of people and communities. Even if a state is like 100% KKK, they might have really damn good cheesecake or pie. Turns out the most racist have the best desserts: custards, gelato and cheesecake. I have no clue how that works. The least racist have the best savory food: Jambalaya, Kung pao, curries, jerk and more. Yet the most racist areas make the best dessert. Basically, the blandest food will come from a region where no one has access to anything, in the middle of the weirdest part of america where no one is anything extreme

You can’t get them in the U.S. anymore as cigarettes, you can only get them as a cigarette sized filtered cigar, and they’re nowhere near as good. They’re like clove flavored swisher sweets

Why are some places counties?

Posted by DrBoogerFart@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 1282 comments

Congregator@reddit

I lived in Michigan for a years, and have thought about this. Townships everywhere. I grew up in mid-Atlantic state with counties. The difference is that a county is a much larger region with a much higher population density. The region doesn’t always have to be larger or smaller but the population density per region size seems to make a difference, along with the voting blocks. My county, back home, has millions of more people living in it than a township in Michigan. Part of that is because Michigan is that much more large and spread out, but also, we are way more transient and industry driven

What is that one city in America most Americans go to for their "first trip"?

If it’s east coast, NYC, Washington DC, or Orlando to get to Disney. I would consider these to be probably the top 3 for “most” on the east coast. Other people are saying things like OC Maryland and such, but I’d imagine the “most” people on the east coast are visiting one of the previous three I’ve mentioned, and particularly because schools even take trips to these places across state lines

Married ?

Congregator@reddit

So, I’m the “single” friend, amongst a large group of married friends- with most of the dudes being old time buddies from before they were married. In my experience (the answer to your question can only be anecdotal), is that they are all happily married because they come to me with all of their married people problems. Since I’m still single and not married and am old time friend, they just lay shit on me. The bulk of their problems they come to me with are generally during times where they are in an argument and feel like they cannot get their wife to see their angle, but they dont want to back down from their argument because they feel like they are right- but they also tell me they don’t want to mess things up. Like, it’s constant. “Dude, I need someone to talk to that I can trust and I really don’t want to mess up my marriage but I really need to vent right now because no matter what I say she doesn’t understand or takes the wrong way”… As the friend that listens, what I’ve found is that a lot of times newer arguments are actually based on unresolved prior arguments that didn’t have resolution, and one partner was too emotionally overwhelmed to be able to continue the argument to resolution. I think a lot of times the arguments are just communication misunderstandings met with slight annoyances that come with personality differences that come with living with the same person everyday: the same way brothers and sisters argue. Or people argue with their parents. I think our society has an overcorrection when it comes to “finding personal happiness”, and sort of forgets that families and brothers and sisters argue quite often, and that this is just the way of life, and that parents mediate these problems so much that it’s taken for granted that brothers and sisters will work things out- but married couples are “supposed to be special” and nothing is ever supposed to be “toxic”. Like, if you’re a human being, every single one of your relationships could potentially be toxic from time to time, that doesn’t mean you should divorce. Brothers and sisters and parents are all toxic regularly as they navigate the world of living with someone that isn’t them

We built a potato gun when I was kid, but found we couldn’t get as much distance with the potatoes so opted for pennies and rocks wadded up into duct tape balls for added weight. The thing was so loud it was ridiculous. The police came once and asked if we were playing with fireworks and we said no “just launching our potato gun”, and they no clue what it was and just us leave with it.

Musician here, and I’ve a bad case of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). I’m constantly building my studio up, and because I came up fairly poor as a kid and could really only afford used or hand me down gear, I’ve completely become fairly materialistic when it comes to my gear: everything has to be highest quality. It’s an epic money drain, and I don’t foresee myself stopping anytime soon

Is it common for Americans to buy soda as part of their weekly groceries? / is soda a regular item people keep at home?

Posted by hailey8171828282@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 2401 comments

Congregator@reddit

I live in the US and soda is completely foreign to me. I see it sold in stores, and it’s an option at fast food joints and various restaurants. You even see soda machines. However, in my entire life (I’m in my 40’s) we have never come up buying soda. My parents never had soda in the refrigerator, none of my siblings, and none of my close friends. What tends to happen, in my world, is I’ll stop by someone’s house I don’t really know for some reason, and there will be a random ass 24 pack or something. I’ll be like: “wow, this person is into drinking soda”. So, in this: it completely depends. I’m an American and I have had soda before, but it’s like something I’ll drink once a year or once every other year- hence how far it is from my every day know how
