Controversial opinion: The Mid 2010s were pretty damn awesome
Posted by wyc1inc@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 154 comments
In terms of our lifetimes, I think it's pretty much consensus that the 90s were awesome and the 2000s and 2020s have sucked.
Looking back, I think the mid 2010s were actually quite awesome. I remember fondly the music, movies, and just overall vibe of that era. Things finally seemed to be recovering from the GFC. Also feels like the last time things felt "normal".
I dare say in my lifetime the mid 2010s may be my favorite time outside the 90s.
Feralest_Baby@reddit
I was in the throes of early parenthood. That time period basically doesn't exist for me out outside of that.
The 2000s though? Glorious!
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
It truly was a blur too to me because of this!

Saaaame
DisastrousTurn9220@reddit
Ditto! The 00s were fantastic-just enough functioning technology to be convenient but not chained to it. Gimme an ipod, gimme myspace, and stop trying to ruin my life.
bgva@reddit
I've said numerous times that we need to rollback technology to about 15 or 20 years ago. Right around the time Youtube Minus Ads was a thing, but right before the comments section was a thing. Also before our (grand)parents found Facebook so 2008ish?
DisastrousTurn9220@reddit
Yes! When we chose to use technology, it wasn't inserted into every facet of our lives.
Ill-Percentage-3276@reddit
Yeahhh I had one kid in 2009 and the other in 2012, I don't even know what was popular or going on lol
Quarrels-ofKoi@reddit
I had twins in 2009. My only memories of that period are yo gabba gabba and the wiggles
Express_Signal_8828@reddit
Right. Mine are a few years younger and for a while all I knew was Baby Shark, El Pollito Pio and f***ing Frozen.
Express_Signal_8828@reddit
Seriously. I'm not sure if it's because my kids were small and I wasn't sleeping but I have almost zero memories or cultural references from that time.
But then again, there was a post on another sub recently asking why ao many big musical acts of the mid-to-late 10s all faded, and they had a point. Like Camila Cabello, Drake, Luis Fonsi... it was a pretty blah period IMHO.
trashpanda6798@reddit
Same, kid was born in 2013 and I changed careers. Only other thing I remember about the 10s was Fury Road
BlankPaperTiger@reddit
Yeah, i'm curious as to when the consensus of the 2000's sucking happened. Arguably, things started going down hill in 2007, but i'd say that's for all of society and due to the invention/release of the iPhone. Otherwise, I think the 2000's were pretty freaking awesome.
nochumplovesucka__@reddit
bgva@reddit
Someone once said the world really did end in December 2012, and as much as I loved the mid-2010s, I think about that theory a lot.
RicFlairsBarTab@reddit
Yeaaaaah! Go CERN!!! 2012 was sucky. I think it corrected the path we were on. No lie.
Specialist-Leek8645@reddit
I honestly can't say that sounds crazy anymore.
Segazorgs@reddit
My favorite years of the 2000s was 2007-09.
Adrasteia-One@reddit
That and the Great Recession. Those few years after that were shudder-inducing.

2 toddlers and elementary aged kid, the mid 2010's were the least social of my life.

Sufficient_Turn_9209@reddit
The aughts were not great. 2001 anyone? But in retrospect I'd say definitely better than 2008 and onwards. The 90s were a perfect little sweet spot of relative peace, economic prosperity, and technological progress. The end of the cold war. Low unemployment in the US. An increase in median household income. Dow Jones in great shape. Rapid technological innovation when technology was still a tool rather than a distraction. It wasn't exactly an analog decade, but it was the last good decade.
C_est_la_vie9707@reddit
I was in the throes of the first marriage woes.
Give me 1995-1999 again
rayray1927@reddit
Yeah I had to think hard about the music and movies of the 2010s and then I remembered I had three kids in the 2010s. So that’s a no from me dawg.
smooth_grooves@reddit
I was in the throes of dating life. In regard to pop culture, I kind of lost track after Gangnam Style and Thrift Shop.
Oh, and the 2010's were great for euro board games.
gingerbeard1321@reddit
C001H4ndPuk3@reddit
Same. When people would ask me about some new restaurant or shows they were going to back then, my answer was always the same: "I don't go places. I have kids instead."
Now that they're all mid to late teens, that's changed. But there was basically a decade of never going anywhere.
nuskit@reddit
Yes! Married in 2000, teaching all over the world with my husband by my side, going to nightclubs in Korea, dinners in Paris, day trips to Belgium, quiet pub dinners with my hubs in Ireland.... The 2000s were perfection, up until we screwed it up by coming back to the States in 2007. Then it all went downhill quickly.
BeeswaxingPoetic@reddit
Same here. But good years, yes.
caramelcoldbrew@reddit
I had a toddler and was pregnant with my youngest during the mid 2010s. Yeah, that time period is a blur.

I'm not sure it's controversial in retrospect. I enjoyed them. It was something of a rebuilding time in my life, as I was starting a new career and we were coming off the 2008 recession in general, but it felt like the future was bright (feels harder to grab onto that now for me).

I deleted mine several months before and for the same reasons fradinryth said- except I saw even smart people I knew reposting memes as facts while otherwise voting for the same party I’m partial to- and that combined with all the rest of it- nah. Instagram went away with the ring kissing and data mining of personal info. And now… here we are.

cranberries87@reddit
Yeah, 2021 was the last time I had a glimmer of hope. That lasted through maybe November.

I had a pretty good time in the 2010s from 2010-2016 or so. By 2016 kind of what we know today started creeping in. 2000s were fun for me, I was on punk bands being reckless and having the time of my life.
cranberries87@reddit
I enjoyed the 2010s immensely(with the exception of 2015, which was horrible personally). And 2019 was the absolute best year of my life.
bgva@reddit
If time travel ever becomes possible, 2017-21 is one era I'd never want to revisit because (gestures wildly) with the exception of 2019. Amazing year for me from start to finish, and I'll never forget spending the last week of that year smoking a cigar to my "2020 Vision". Yeahhhhhhh about that.............
coveredinbeeps@reddit
2019 was a really great year for me too, the year I turned 40. I kind of think it's been all downhill since then.
cranberries87@reddit
Yes, straight downhill. I kept thinking maybe covid would settle down after a year or two, everything could get back to normal, and I could pick up where I left off. Was wishful thinking, that was basically my last hurrah.
coveredinbeeps@reddit
Same, my friend, same. Illness, job loss, divorce, the whole world going to shit...but hey, at least we had a good year I guess.

I think the late aughts were cool. Smartphones were doing interesting things before they became enshittified data harvesting nodes, and the xb360/ps3 era gave us some of the greatest games ever made.

The mid-2010s brought a lot of difficult changes I wasn't ready for. My parents retired with little savings, sold their home they could no longer afford or care for and moved in with me.They hoped to travel but my dad's health declined and he passed away half a year later. A few other close relatives passed away and extended family drama basically estranged us from them.
I shelved my goals to instead take care of my mother and most of my time and savings goes towards that since then.

Segazorgs@reddit
2013-15 was okay. But 2010-2012 and 2016-2020 was still darkness. Some very good Breaking Bad or post breaking bad TV shows came out during this time Mr. Robot, Narcos, Fargo.
Appropriate_Berry_44@reddit
The time period between 2010-2015 was awesome, I remember it fondly. The 2000s not as much, but I still have very good memories. The 2020's, yep, the worst decade ever.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
I mean, they stunk, it just wasn't this bad. 💀
PercentageRoutine310@reddit
I had a good run from 2013-2019. Yeah, most of that decade was pretty good to me. Even 2012 was quite fun and crazy. This year is my worst year ever. Worse than 2020. But I keep fighting on. The 90s carries most of my great nostalgia especially early 90s and then from ‘96-‘99. The mid 90s were my least fav (‘94-‘95).
FUWS@reddit
I consider the early 2010s the years that lead us into the dopamine exhaustion era we live right now.
High speed internet becoming more available and Social media was really taking off…Uber, Podcasts and other technologies really made some strides in those years for the average consumer. Going to movies slowly faded due to things like Netflix getting more popular. Now we are so used to the instant gratification that those years feel different and it feels like a 2nd nostalgia.
I liked those years too but it’s a double edged sword looking back…

As a former zookeeper, I hate that meme so much. Tranquilizers don’t work well enough to have been an option. I’ve seen animals get darted and proceed to freak the fuck out and need a second dose 10 minutes later. It’s so, so sad, but Harambe had to be shot. I’m upset with the parents and upset with the exhibit design, but so many people put the onus on the caretakers for making the decision that had to be made.
End rant. Sore subject.
LasagnahogXRP@reddit
I feel that and you’re 100% right but it happened an it angered the meme gods and here we are. You do god’s work friend.

I lost my dad in ‘09 and my mom in ‘15, it’s been pretty awful since then for me personally, health failing and all that. I’ll never have times like I did in the late nineties/early 2000s, I’m okay with that. Still plenty of good to have, I just don’t see anything topping that.

I dated, moved in with, and eventually married a wonderful, awesome woman. This took me from ohio down to North Carolina where we had many adventures, from Dragon*Con to so many fun camping trips.
Unfortunately as the decade wrapped up I had fallen into a deep deep depression where I completely failed at being a good partner and my quest ended in 2022 with a separation.
It sucks, but I wouldn't trade it for the world and am terribly sorry for my lack of support and companionship. I lived, I learned, I loved, and then I lost.
I have delt with it and am amazingly in a fantastic position both mentally and on my career. So while it sucked. Bad. I have moved and grown from the experience.

It was all pretty fucking awesome, all things considering, until about 2018. People can cherry pick whatever timeline anyone so desires, and they all have their ups and downs.
But there's always a deeper level of down when facism is in play. And since 2017 we've been getting real in touch with facism, around the whole wide fucking world.
Alt J and Molly were in their fucking prime during those days. 90s was all about cocaine and Rammstein. Anyone who says any point between those wasn't an awesome time, just didn't know how to fucking have an awesome time.
jdw1977@reddit
Totally agree!!
PMichaelB89@reddit
I think it's subjective, outside the 90's. For me the mid-2000's were pretty interesting. Most of us were in our 20's, just coming into our own. Social media really wasn't an insidious presence in everyday life yet. The transition to full digital/ hi-def was in the early stages. There was still some semblance of collective norms and shared experience. There was definitely a military-industrial vibe underlying things, but I would say 2004 right until the economic crisis in 2008 was a unique mini-era that equals or surpasses anything in the 2010's.

2013-16 was such a vibe for me personally. At least it was until the election.
Storytime: I'm a photographer and I realized in 2013 I wanted to pursue this professionally. Unfortunately I prolly focused (no pun intended I swear) on photography more than my actual job, and that led to me getting fired in 2014.
Used my newfound downtime to really learn the ropes and I can honestly say getting fired was the best worst thing that could've happened. Before getting fired I gave myself two years to save up enough to leave my cubicle. Had they not fired me, I know I would still be at that cubicle muttering "Just two more years..."
Even though it sucked being a starving artist, 2014-15 remains one of my favorite time frames and I'd love to wake up tomorrow and it's 2015 all over again. Only changes I'd make is I have my current job and fiancee', neither of which I had back then.

edasto42@reddit
I think that there’s no particular time that’s sucked or whatever. Saying the 90’s were awesome is often based on the folly of youth and not having to be responsible, so comparing them to adult life it’s easy to choose. Plus adding in the bullshit list of nostalgia that smooths out the rough edges and leaves the great times to shine more.
But on the other hand, there’s also been dark times in any era. I can remember days of sitting in my bedroom in the 90’s contemplating taking my own life because I was depressed and lonely. Conversely, I can think of times during whatever era someone thinks of as terrible and have great stories to tell.
