Question from the uk. Do Americans roll their own cigarettes?
Posted by ExpectRelentless@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 312 comments
Just sitting wondering if you’d have what we call ‘roll up’s’ when you roll ur own cigarette or as we call them ‘fags’ lol I know what means something different in America. Do you’s have them?
kibbeuneom@reddit
Even the old people outside of work are just vaping now.
deafinitely-faeris@reddit
I'm from a super rural mountain town in Appalachia, here a lot of people roll their cigarettes. I've seen my family do it plenty of times.
djnastynipple@reddit
Some people, yeah. It’s not super common though.
TheOfficialKramer@reddit
What? Where are you from? Most people where I'm from, western PA, roll their own.
UncleRuckus92@reddit
In the hippy/deadhead circles I used to run in most people rolled their own. They also used to roll mostly spliffs instead of joints but that might be a Vermont/NE
PhilipAPayne@reddit
My father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all do/did this. None of them would come close to being called a hippie.
5uper5kunk@reddit
Yeah I sort of feel that way too, like spliffs being more of a “north of NYC” New England thing.
Past_Worker_8262@reddit
Hey i learned about spliffs first in the midwest after growing up in New England. It seemed to be huuuuuge out there
__birdie@reddit
Omg I had completely forgotten about being at parties and someone handing you a joint without saying it’s a spliff
TheOfficialKramer@reddit
Yes, very common to roll. I've rolled my own for the last 25 years and it's kind of the norm, it's less common to strictly biy packs.
Adorable-East-2276@reddit
You can if you want, but I associate rolling cigarettes pretty much exclusively with continental Europe.
Added to that, American joints almost ever have tobacco the way you might see in places where rolling cigarettes is common
GeneralBlumpkin@reddit
Huh we used to roll joints with some tobacco in it in Arizona like 10 years ago. It was pretty common
DenseAstronomer3631@reddit
Yeah everyone saying north east but I grew up in AZ and tons of the dirty hippie kids would roll their own cigs with the cheap ass bugler packs and I had a spliff phase lol I just never loved tobacco personally
Last-Radish-9684@reddit
I lived through that...
GeneralBlumpkin@reddit
I remember those lol
random_invisible@reddit
It stops the weed from going out when you're not constantly hitting it
GeneralBlumpkin@reddit
That's a great point I've never thought of that
Prize_Jicama2905@reddit
You don't think people put tobacco in their joints?? Where do you live? In the southeast here It is the default
IMakeOkVideosOk@reddit
I’ve never actually seen a spliff
Prize_Jicama2905@reddit
Where is this sheltered climate? Are you really young? I have so many questions
IMakeOkVideosOk@reddit
I’m not European, why would I put tobacco in weed? A blunt is one thing but weed in a joint is dumb. No reason for it
Prize_Jicama2905@reddit
That's an interesting attitude. In general, just because you don't understand things doesn't mean there's no reason for them. See how I'm asking questions instead of randomly calling things dumb? I don't know if you're asking me to explain the reasons why people smoke many different kinds of spliffs but I'd be happy to explain if you're here to learn.
People like to smoke tobacco. Crazy right? I can't imagine why any tobacco smokers would be on a thread asking tobacco smokers questions.
Blunts are tobacco as well.
Tobacco burns better. Even a very small sprinkling of tobacco makes the joint stay lit and not get all sticky and not go out. I've known lots of people who don't "smoke tobacco" who still sprinkle a very small amount for functional reasons.
Lots and lots of herbs can be smoked, weed and tobacco don't have a monopoly on this, and I typically hear these called spliffs as well. Some popular ones to mix into a spliff that I've seen: damiana, tulsi, lavender, peppermint, catnip, lobelia, mullein and many many more, more than I care to list or probably even know about. Turns out lots of stuff gets into the bloodstream much faster and more effectively thorough the lungs. There's even practices like putting cocaine on the end of a cigarette although I doubt anyone would ever refer to that as a spliff.
IMakeOkVideosOk@reddit
If you roll them correctly and break up the buds there isn’t a problem with how it burns or smokes. The vast majority of people don’t want tobacco to sully their joints, in my 30 years of smoking, I’ve never seen anyone want to add tobacco to a joint. As a former tobacco smoker i would not add tobacco to a joint because I could just have a cigarette after
Yes blunts are different and their own thing; but blunts aren’t joints by definition.
Finally anyone adding coke to the end of cigarettes is dumb because it literally will do nothing. The coke will be burnt up rather than vaporizing and be inhaled.
RatherGoodDog@reddit
If anyone's curious, it's because historically (e.g. in the 1960s) bud wasn't the norm in Europe. Hashish from north Africa or Afghanistan was imported, and you can't smoke straight hash in a roll-up. It has to be mixed with tobacco to make something smokable.
This practice carried forward into the modern era when domestically grown cannabis bud became the norm.
Effective-Scratch673@reddit
The practice carried forward because Europeans are cheap as fuck and bud is expensive
Past_Worker_8262@reddit
Really? I always used to do a spliff cause it added a little filler, the right amount of tobacco at the end of a blunt acted for me as a "filter" (really a way of keeping everything in especially for ground), it seemed to override the weed smell or change it ever so slightly so as not to be as strong, and I just naturally enjoyed smoking cigars by themselves. I learned it in Chicago and down in Tampa it was pretty big too imo
5uper5kunk@reddit
Crazily enough, mixing tobacco in with weed is making a comeback at least among young people in the Washington DC area.
They buy these little tiny bags of super dry super dark leaf tobacco they call “Grabba” or “Funnel”. They don’t use very much like not nearly as much as you would use in a spliff, but it’s really strong really dry tobacco and packs a punch. Most of the kids I’ve talked to about it have never heard the term spliff before which blew my mind.
Classic-Push1323@reddit
It's always been popular. I wouldn't really call it a comeback.
5uper5kunk@reddit
In the US? I disagree with that strongly like I was a spliff guy for years and people were overwhelmingly confused when I offered them a hit/explained what was in the joint.
Past_Worker_8262@reddit
Same here but I would also smoke the whole gar by itself with inhaling. Honey Dutchs baby! Everyone said i was crazy until we got pulled over and i started smoking one; diminished the smell of the bud real quick
Frequent-Account-344@reddit
What about blunts? Those were huge back in the day.
5uper5kunk@reddit
Blunts I think are weirdly different in that a lot of times the motivation was not to consume tobacco with your weed, but to 1: roll something large enough that four or five people can hit it, and 2: if you’re in a group that’s likely to get fucked with by the cops, not having “drug paraphernalia” on you is an appealing thing so a cigar is probably safer than a pack of rolling papers.
BuildNuyTheUrbanGuy@reddit
No in VA/DC area. My friend has been using funnel for decades in his joints.
5uper5kunk@reddit
That’s wild, have a little baggies been available for that long? I swear I only started seeing them in the last maybe five or six years, but I assume they were loose leaf blunt wraps or something so I never paid them much attention.
BuildNuyTheUrbanGuy@reddit
No idea. I grew up in Louisiana and we definitely dont use it.
RhymenoserousRex@reddit
like 30 years ago we called them super cigs.
Classic-Push1323@reddit
Yup, they were the dominant smoking method for many of my friends in MD/DC/VA 10-20 years ago. Where were you?
5uper5kunk@reddit
Same area, but I started smoking in the late 90s.
Were you guys calling it grabba/funnel back then or were you calling them spliffs? Were you buying specific bags of tobacco or just ripping apart cigarettes? Like it’s fascinating to find someone from the same area with such a different experience like for years I was the weirdo for mixing weed with tobacco, other than the occasional European over here for school/work, nobody seem to be really on board with that sort of thing.
Classic-Push1323@reddit
This is so interesting!
We called them spliffs, and it was usually bags of tobacco but I've seen both. This was the era when people used to smoke cigarettes a lot when they drank as well, no one vaped yet, etc. I wonder if it dropped off when people started vaping at parties instead of smoking - maybe the late 20-teens?
5uper5kunk@reddit
It is really interesting.
I found one of those little bags of funnel on the floor at the warehouse at work and one of the young guys saw me looking at it. I asked him what it was and he explained it was for mixing with weed and I was like “oh you mean a spliff? and he looked at me like I was speaking gibberish. I started asking all the young guys at work who I knew were cool with weed and they all basically had the same reaction, they all either smoked/had friends who smoked funnel but no one had ever heard the term “spliff”.
I bought a couple bags of funnel to try it out, it’s very very strong compared to the cigarette rolling tobacco I used to use back of the day
Classic-Push1323@reddit
Sounds like typical Gen Z. They have new terms for everything, and all the drugs are way stronger.
SpiceEarl@reddit
I think it must have been a regional thing. Growing up in Oregon, in the 80’s, it was not popular. If someone passed you a joint with tobacco mixed in, they would not have received a favorable response. It would be like, “Why are you ruining perfectly good weed?”
macrocosm93@reddit
I remember it being a thing with blunts, but not with joints.
ATLUTDisMe@reddit
It's always been popular in NYC
5uper5kunk@reddit
The little bags of tobacco or just ripping up a cigarette?
Like I’ve been smoking weed for a while I frequently go to sketchy gas stations to buy my rolling papers/backwoods, I just can’t figure out how I missed this exciting new trend in weed smoking.
Spoiler alert, it’s because I’m almost 50 and out of touch but I really feel bad that it’s been going on for this long and only now am I finding out about funnel.
ATLUTDisMe@reddit
Yeah damn near everybody in NYC (especially the Black and Caribbean peoples) smokes with a shit ton of grabba. At least the last 10 years that is, before that I think it was fronta leaf.
5uper5kunk@reddit
Man I don’t know what’s going on in my life like I blaze down with two black dudes from NYC at least every couple months and I swear they would kick me out of the rotation if I tried to sprinkle a little tobacco in one of the joints. They’re both about 50 as well, so maybe it’s just an age thing. They were both big blunt dudes when they were young and gave up tobacco so I guess it could be that too
ATLUTDisMe@reddit
Yeah, everybody ik in NYC over 40 smokes woods, Js, or glass pieces so you're probably right about that.
One_Advantage793@reddit
My SO rolled his own until he finally quit smoking, mostly because it was much less expensive. Probably 40 years, give or take.
Lisserbee26@reddit
I associate it with everyday rural and poor folks.
BassTacos242@reddit
Yeah but it is very common to roll spliffs with tobacco in them
Queer_Advocate@reddit
...but let me get to the point, let's roll another joint And turn the radio loud, I'm too alone to be proud And you don't know how it feels...
and, yes, but not most. Now weed? If you can't roll your own joint, you shouldn't be smoking it.
Weed is legal in my state.
Derminac@reddit
From my experience, it’s mostly older/elderly people that do this. Definitely not common
Aggressive-Emu5358@reddit
I’ve known only one person to do so ever. She was a 2 pack a day smoker and claimed it was “cheaper” however she preferred her blue American Spirits over the home rolled always. I’d say no.
FoggyGoodwin@reddit
America has several brands of rolling tobacco. Two I'm most familiar with are Bugler and American Spirit. They are sold in the grocery and tobacconist. I doubt if the grocer would devote shelf space if they didn't sell.
Emily_Postal@reddit
If you can find a smoker to ask.
Fun_Machine7346@reddit
Stop smoking are you insane.
Darmok47@reddit
As a millennial American, I knew few people who smoked cigarattes at all, but a lot more who smoked marijuana. Anti-smoking ads in the 90s really targeted our generation and we never took up the habit as much.
When I moved to the UK in the 2010s for a grad degree, the first time I saw someone rolling their own cigarettes, I just assume he was rolling a joint, and I was quite surprised he was doing it brazenly outdoors. Took me a while to get used to it.
Once, on a London to San Francsico flight, I saw a guy sitting across the aisle get out his rolling papers and tobacco bag when we were starting our descent; he just sat there rolling a few cigarettes while I watched in fascination. I guess the cabin crew didn't care as long as he didn't light one up. I guess he really wanted to be ready for his first cig after 10 hours....
Onyx_Lat@reddit
Some people do. But usually it signifies being poor, because it's cheaper to buy loose tobacco and some papers than it is to buy commercially manufactured cigarettes.
There are also machines that will roll a cigarette for you, and you can even get filters to put on them. You put everything in them and then turn a crank to affix it in place. I used to have one, since I sucked at rolling them by hand.
Vulpix_lover@reddit
Not super common but it is said to be cheaper than buying them
DrMindbendersMonocle@reddit
It is much cheaper and the cigarettes tend to last a lot longer too. Don't necessarily taste better, though
gogozrx@reddit
Oh, I disagree about the flavor. I was getting a "custom blend" from a tobacconist, and a month supply would cost me about $30-40, plus papers which were about $1/100. The cigarettes were *way* better than the packs I was getting previously (Camel lights), and the Camel Lights were way better than any of the other packs I tried.
Prize_Jicama2905@reddit
Pipe tobacco really is piped tobacco though
ExpectRelentless@reddit (OP)
People smoke them there bc they are cheaper, these days it’s like £40 for a 50g pouch.
CobandCoffee@reddit
Prices vary wildly depending on location in the U.S. but for reference a pack of cheaper cigarettes are around $5USD or £3.50GBP where I live.
ExpectRelentless@reddit (OP)
Dam cheapest packet here is probably like £12 maybe
ucjj2011@reddit
US cigarettes cheaper than Canadian cigarettes, there's actually a thriving Black market in Canada where people carry US cigarettes over and sell them illegally in Canada.
Occasionally the Canadian Mafia will get really ambitious and hijack a whole truckload of cigarettes to sell in Canada.
Martinonfire@reddit
…..cheapest legal packet perhaps.
ExpectRelentless@reddit (OP)
menthol clicks. £4.5 a pack. Nice blue box. Cash only ;)
Martinonfire@reddit
An interesting read re the effects of the Australian tobacco taxes and vale ban here
https://velvetgloveironfist.blogspot.com/2026/05/quiet-children-grown-ups-are-talking.html
TheRateBeerian@reddit
Back in the early 90s, I had a roommate in college that bought pouches of American spirit tobacco and rolled his own, he insisted it was a ton better than the other stuff. I believe him as I've since smoked American Spirit prerolls and they're pretty good.
I don't see those loose leaf pouches anymore, no idea if they still make them - but I've seen these giant pouches of loose tobacco labeled "pipe tobacco" at the local smoke shop but its actually not for pipes, but is meant for rolling your own and the stuff looks pretty bad.
No-Lunch4249@reddit
Yeah when I was in college, a significant majority of those who smoked also rolled their own to save money. One person tried growing his own tobacco plant lol
Glad-Isopod5718@reddit
Can confirm, my dad used to roll his own because it was a lot cheaper. They're taxed differently. Or were at the time, anyway; this would have been in the early 90's. A pouch of tobacco cost about half of what a pack of cigarettes did, and made about twice as many cigarettes. IIRC, they threw the rolling papers in free.
Past_Worker_8262@reddit
Lol. I have been around a bit and only met one old guy in the middle of Illinois who still does this. Had the whole machine, bulk orders of tabacco and rolling paper, and the lovely, constant conversation topic of Russian Hackers.
Thank you for triggering that memory. Gave me a good laugh!
IthurielSpear@reddit
Marijuana? Yup
Cigars_and_Beer@reddit
My grandfather did. Prince Albert in a can and OCB papers.
thats-gold-jerry@reddit
I see a lot of people (hipsters) where I live do it.
Prize_Jicama2905@reddit
In my friend circles, yes I'd say the vast majority of people roll their own cigarettes. There's a Venn diagram in my head of the overlap between: Economic reasons (rollies are cheaper) "Health" reasons (additive consciousness) And The ability to add marijuana (spliffs) or other herbs
Hippies fit all of these categories of course but there's several other demographics that hit on one or two of these.
Severe_Ad428@reddit
I did from the late 1980s until I quit smoking in 2020. Find a good pipe/cigar shop with a nice selection of tobaccos to pull from, and a paper you like, and have at. Ironically, my favorite paper was from Belgium, Rizla Blue, and got hard to find in the states the last few years that I was smoking.
seecarlytrip@reddit
My uncle used to before he died. I’ve never met anyone else who does.
MrLongWalk@reddit
Some do, the vast majority don’t.
We know what it means in the UK, it’s not as confusing and amusing to us as you lot think.
ExpectRelentless@reddit (OP)
Well from in person experiences I’ve had some very amusing moments lol
sweetEVILone@reddit
You do realize it’s a slur against gay people here? Please explain what’s amusing about it?
ExpectRelentless@reddit (OP)
The confusion… the confusion is funny lol
sweetEVILone@reddit
Why is it funny? Why is it funny for someone to think they hear you using a slur? Would you think its funny if if were a racial slur? Or is it only funny because it’s against gay people?
terryjuicelawson@reddit
Jeez, relax dude. Brits get laughed at for "spotted dick" and stuff like that.
sweetEVILone@reddit
“Spotted dick” is not a slur. The other is. Poor analogy. Purposely using a word that you know is a slur in another culture because you think it’s funny is beyond rude. It’s not funny at all and at worst it’s hurtful to many.
MrLongWalk@reddit
Do you see the confusion as a common thing?
GreenBeanTM@reddit
“A person thought I said a slur, isn’t that hilarious?!” No, it’s really not.
Bkri84@reddit
wait till Americans find out about Fanny, since fanny packs are all the rage here
pyramidalembargo@reddit
Ah, come on, let us in on the joke...:)
To answer the question, rolling your own tobacco cigarettes has become rare. We have value cigarettes that poor people smoke that are significantly cheaper than Marlboros.
sparklyjoy@reddit
When I used to work with homeless folks, lots (most?) rolled their own cigarettes because it’s cheaper. I’m not sure I’ve seen it outside that context.
Usual-Ad6290@reddit
Very few these days, a lot in the old days.
drnewcomb@reddit
It is very unusual these days.
miseod@reddit
I really like gauloises halfzware? I think that’s the spelling.
thesweetestberry@reddit
10 years ago, nearly all of my friends smoked cigarettes, including myself. That’s maybe 50-75 people.
Today, maybe 2-3 of those friends still smoke cigarettes, and only one of them rolls his own.
Living_Molasses4719@reddit
I associate this with “poor people shit” because it is cheaper. Not terribly common but some do.
ReverendMak@reddit
It’s very, very rare. If I saw a fellow American doing it, I’d assume it’s some kind of hipster affectation or weird hobby.
MentalChance4368@reddit
For the cost of 3-4 packs of Marlboro. You can get 2 cartons worth of tobacco and tubes . It's time consuming rolling your own and messy. It's not vary common at all.
burlingk@reddit
When I was a kid, a lot of people did. When my grandparents were kids, most people did. Now, a few people still do.
Shop-S-Marts@reddit
The poor addicts do
sonof_fergus@reddit
Sometimes... Have a one of those crank cigarette making things, but have to get the filter tubes "cigs wit no bacco", had a dude at my bar tonight enjoying pipe tobacco, the hippies...I suck at rolling anyway... 🍻
Crusoe15@reddit
From what I’ve seen, it’s more common for someone to roll a joint (weed) because you can’t exactly buy that pre-rolled like cigarettes (tobacco)
MacaroonSad8860@reddit
It’s not so common. I used to smoke and had lived abroad and rolled my own and whenever I went back to the states I had to find a specialty store to get dry rolling tobacco as the stuff sold more commonly (Drum brand) is quite damp and pungent.
RodeoBoss66@reddit
It used to be standard to roll your own cigarettes back in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but since the advent of pre-rolled cigarettes, the number of smokers who deliberately choose to roll their own has decreased exponentially, especially in light of the huge decrease in the overall number of tobacco smokers. However, the practice can still occasionally be found here and there, in ever-dwindling numbers.
somecow@reddit
Sure. Barely nobody does it, and are VERY picky about what brand of cigarettes they get. But cheaper, and if you can roll it (we smoke a lot of weed, yes, we can roll it), it happens.
zinky8@reddit
No. Most people don’t even smoke. It’s a disgusting habit.
SmilingHappyLaughing@reddit
Very few roll their own cigarettes.
LiqdPT@reddit
Honestly, Canadians and Americans don't smoke NEARLY as much as Europeans in general.
So when you ask "do Americans..." the actual answer is for the great majority is "don't smoke cigarettes"
DEADFLY6@reddit
I did when I was homeless. I picked up cigarette butts and knocked off the ashy part and the filter rolled the tobacco up. I did my part helping Walmart and gas stations keep their parking lots clean.
OGbigfoot@reddit
I roll 99% of my smokes. The only time i don't is when I'm in a super hurry. Then I get a pack of o van afford it.
Phoenix_Court@reddit
Not common. More likely to see someone roll their own joint that their own cigarette. But cigarette smoking is also way way down now.
sluttypidge@reddit
My grandpa did.
My grandma has never.
Effective_Display940@reddit
Most don’t, but my brother always has.
ThrowAwayIGotHack3d@reddit
It's not super common but I know a few people who do it. More commonly you'll find people who roll their own (weed) joints. You'll also depending on what state you're in, commonly find people who go to native reservations to buy cigarettes since you sometimes get them cheaper there.
ByWillAlone@reddit
I used to before I quit smoking. I never called them "roll ups" though. I called them "hand rolls"...and that's what everyone I knew who rolled their own called them.
kill4karma@reddit
My family have been heavy smokers my whole life and broke, my grandma still will roll cigs for grandpa even though she vapes now lol. But yeah, it's not common but it's definitely cheaper. Although it's quite different from rolling joints (weed specifically) in my experience. We had a mechanical machine that shoves the tobacco in paper tubes that look exactly like pre-bought ones. You could technically roll tobacco with loose papers but I've never heard of someone actually doing that. I feel like even chewing tobacco is more common than that
Narrow-Psychology909@reddit
Not really
UnderstandingDry4072@reddit
Before he quit, my SO did. Way cheaper.
shelwood46@reddit
My cousin and his wife roll their own tobacco cigarettes, but it's pretty rare. Not many people smoke here anymore as it is, and most just buy pack of filtered cigarettes.
Mushrooming247@reddit
Yep, I used to roll my own cigarettes, (because it was insanely cheaper than buying them by the pack.) But I quit years ago so now I just roll joints.
LongOrganization7838@reddit
Not super common and significantly more common in the cigar and weed community but most decent smoke shops will stock rolling supplies
Ok-Attorney-5477@reddit
I know 3 or 4 people who do. I'm surprised more people don't considering how much cigarette packs cost these days. Rolling is way cheaper. A pack of cigarettes cost $5-6 for the cheapest brands, and around $10-$12 a pack for the major brands where I live.
funny_bunny33@reddit
It's a poverty thing in the Midwest. You gotta be BROKE and you can use a bunch of cig butts to roll a whole new one
JackTheBehemothKillr@reddit
My Dad is the only person I've ever met who still rolls his own. Everyone always thinks he's rolling a joint.
Lunakill@reddit
The only time I’ve known people to do that was when they were very, very cash poor.
Ok_Driver_6895@reddit
My grandfather used to. He passed away in the '80s. (Maybe other older men in the family did as well, but he was the only one I ever watched do it. As a kid, I was fascinated by the little booklet of rolling papers.)
ArkansasTravelier@reddit
I’d associate it with people being in extreme poverty, regular people who smoke just buy them, but there is definitely an image in my head of some people in a dirty trailer rolling cigarettes at a cluttered coffee table while a bunch of dogs are barking
echinoderm0@reddit
Strange that you got downvoted. Only people I've known that smoked rollies were on the brink of homelessness. Food stamps/gov cheese don't go far.
roumonada@reddit
Rubes roll their own cigarettes. But here, we call rubes “rednecks”.
indifferentunicorn@reddit
Yep. Mostly when in jail or just got out and don’t have a paycheck yet.
ghost-church@reddit
We don’t roll ‘cigarettes’
dildozer10@reddit
Smoking in general is becoming less common here in the states. Most people who roll their own cigarettes are impoverished and are trying to save a cent or two.
I knew a lot of people, many were elderly when I was a kid, who rolled their own cigarettes, but would be very surprised to see someone in my age group or younger doing it.
HooksNHaunts@reddit
My grandma had me rolling hers when I was a kid but I don’t even know many people who smoke anymore.
Thedollysmama@reddit
Broke people roll their own
Zenthane@reddit
I don't even roll my own joints. Actually I don't smoke cigarettes, but some people who do roll their own, but i would say it's really uncommon.
Traditional_Trust418@reddit
I know of one person who rolls their own: an old coworker of mine. It's a thing, but we wouldn't call them "fags" because that's a slur for gay people.
jakizely@reddit
I know exactly 1 person that does. He's not stuck up, but he smokes a lot so it's just cheaper.
Different_Cherry8326@reddit
Uncommon. It is usually a sign of poverty, as it is cheaper than mass produced cigarettes. Although smoking in general is strongly associated with poverty in the US, more so today than in the past. There is a very strong social stigma against smoking now.
VariegatedPlumage@reddit
It’s like with anything, people who are super nerdy about beer might brew their own, but the vast majority of beer drinkers don’t. People who are super nerdy about tobacco might roll their own, but the vast majority of people don’t.
Wafflebot17@reddit
It saves money, but our cigarette taxes aren’t nearly as high a in Europe so most people don’t.
Loud-Bee-4894@reddit
Only if you are really broke. I used to spend $40 a month that way. Compared to $480 a month.
Fenifula@reddit
My late husband rolled his own cigarettes. But we definitely don't call them "fags." In fact, if a guy in a bar said, "I'm going to go out and roll a few fags" it would have an entirely different meaning in the US.
unix_name@reddit
Depends on where you live, it might be more common or not.
ididreadittoo@reddit
Some do, I have but don't now
Buckabuckaw@reddit
It used to be more common back in the day, when many young people rolled their own doobies. With the advent of vapes and edibles, rolling has become another old-timer's skill that is going by the boards. Sigh
devnullopinions@reddit
Americans smoking cigarettes is kind of niche now down to <10%. Perhaps some of those people do roll their own.
I think you’d have less trouble finding people who roll their own joints than finding people who roll their own cigarettes.
Americans don’t generally “smoke fags”, that phrase means something _entirely_ and horribly different in the US.
iowanaquarist@reddit
I don't know any that's still smoke cigarettes.
Lisaroxit@reddit
My dad passed away in 2013 and he rolled his own.
DikkDowg@reddit
I worked with a bunch of guys who did, because it was significantly cheaper
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
My dad and I used to when we still smoked. But he’s been dead for eight years now. And I quit well before he died.
asistolee@reddit
If you’re broke yeah
gordonf23@reddit
Nobody rolls their own (tobacco) cigarettes.
Fucking_in_tents_@reddit
With how much the cost of cigarettes has gone up because of taxes and rollbacks to tobacco farming subsidies, it’s getting more popular. At least in my personal experience people call them rollys here or just hand rolled
scottypotty79@reddit
It’s common enough that every town has at least one smoke shop and every smoke shop sells loose tobacco and papers.
ZaphodG@reddit
Sure, but not tobacco.
TapeDaddy@reddit
I did for some time, but I just don’t smoke enough for it to be worth it. The savings are incredible, though, if you’re a heavy smoker.
Went from hand rolls to a tube injection machine after a while. With a top-o-matic, I could make a whole carton(200 cigarettes) for about the price of one pack of a leading brand. Maybe took me 5 minutes to make one pack.
Congregator@reddit
I worked at a tobacco shop in the U.S. for quite sometime. There are a collection of people that roll their own cigarettes: some for preference, some as a hobby, and others to save $$$.
You’ll have the people that buy the machines that pack the pre-rolled cigarettes, people with the machines with the unrolled paper, and then people who manually roll their cigarettes by hand.
purpfeebs@reddit
I used to roll my own but it was because I was really broke in my early 20s and it was cheaper. Now I only buy rolling papers for cannabis (in a legal state). Thankfully I gave up cigarettes many years ago.
Mr_Cigarette@reddit
When I smoked, I used to roll my own.
Bali Shag, Samson, and Gauloises.
It wasn't incredibly common, but it was normal enough that I could get my tobacco at certain gas stations in a big city.
5uper5kunk@reddit
I miss Bali Shag so much, I smoked it for years and one day I bought a bag and it was trash and every other bag I bought After was trash so I eventually just quit.
Mr_Cigarette@reddit
When you say 'trash' do you mean dry and harsh? Because I remember at one time, you'd open a bag and the tobacco was always fresh and the perfect level of moist. Then one day it wasn't, and it never was again.
5uper5kunk@reddit
I mean that it was dry when I opened the bag and the tobacco itself was different, it’s like they changed where they were sourcing the leaves from, the flavor and everything was completely different and worse.
I always had some sort of humidification solution for my main tobacco stash, I would carry a day or two worth of tobacco in a little leather pouch along with a chunk of weed and a little Clay hydration disc, that generally worked pretty well to keep everything fresh
Mr_Cigarette@reddit
Ok, yeah I totally agree. I used to use orange peels.
The last time I remember Bali Shag being consistently good was maybe early 2000s? I feel like I started getting dry stuff around 2005 or 06?
5uper5kunk@reddit
Yep, that’s about the same time frame it went to hell for me.
izyshoroo@reddit
Super rural folks do in my experience, 99% dont (smoking is also nowhere near as common here than in Europe. Its seen as very dirty and disgusting)
Klutzy-Comment6897@reddit
You so hateful OP. 🤷🏻♂️
Colodanman357@reddit
I used to roll my own smokes, but stoped when federal taxes on loose tobacco was raised so it’s not much cheaper than pre-rolled cigarettes. It’s not worth it anymore.
PabloTFiccus@reddit
I do but it's very uncommon. I regularly have people come up and comment on it
Left-Consequence-976@reddit
When I’ve encountered this it usually means 1 of two things. 1) They’re trying to cut back (since rolling takes longer & is a pain in the ass), or 2) they’re broke, and loose tobacco is cheaper.
Icy-Role2321@reddit
More common in trailer parks
DeathofRats42@reddit
I briefly worked in a roll-your-own place where we sold the supplies and had machines that could pack loose tobacco into tubes for you. (A carton-worth cost about half of the price of a retail carton of name brand.) This was June 2012. The reason my job was brief was due to an unrelated bill in congress where the cigarette lobby had managed to get them to slip in a small section about taxing loose tobacco at a higher rate, erasing the price benefit entirely. No way to compete with that.
boodyclap@reddit
Some do, it's kinda considerd a hipestery thing or someone whos just really into tabacoo

You can, but it's a lot more common to roll joints. Marijuana to the uninitiated.
NaomiiiTwinz@reddit
Seen people roll up cigarettes in shows or movies, but not in real life
I have seen people roll weed if that still counts tho
ExpectRelentless@reddit (OP)
Do you guys buy ur joints or blunts pre rolled?
Pinwurm@reddit
When I was younger, rolling your own joints & blunts was common. Of course, this was pre legalization.
Buying pre-rolls is very common now and it tends to be very affordable. I don't know anyone that rolls their own anymore (maybe I've just aged out). Blunts have lost popularity. I can't remember the last time I saw one.
ExpectRelentless@reddit (OP)
The only time I’ve had a pre rolled joint is in Amsterdam and I found that they wasn’t as strong. Probably different in the US
illegal in uk so rolling is the only option really
Pinwurm@reddit
They're available at every dispensary in every 'legal' state. There's a few dispensaries in my neighborhood - you just walk in and buy them like a pharmacy. Everything is professionally packaged and labelled. Edibles will even have nutrition facts (calories, sugar content, etc).
5uper5kunk@reddit
Pre-roll joints are extremely common in the US although they are most uniformly terrible terrible quality. Blunts you generally can’t buy pre-rolled, at least legally, as the regulations for weed and tobacco don’t allow it
NaomiiiTwinz@reddit
I usually see people always rolling it themselves, so more than likely it's rarely pre rolled
ExpectRelentless@reddit (OP)
Ohh okay. Thanks
Altaira99@reddit
Very rare. I've never seen another person roll a tobacco cigarette. Weed, now, lots of people roll joints.
MSGinSC@reddit
I did when I was younger and smoked cigarettes. I still roll my own, though.
andmewithoutmytowel@reddit
I knew some people that always rolled their own, but it was much less common. Also smoking in general is way less common. At work we have 35 or so people and 3 that smoke.
BippidiBoppetyBoob@reddit
Smoking itself is pretty rare (most of those that do these days seem to be vaping), and among smokers rolling your own is also pretty rare. It's kind of like a thing an old farmer does in Looney Toons.
Classic-Push1323@reddit
A LOT of the differences between America and Europe have to do with our very, very different tax structures. A pack of cigarettes overages $8 in the US, so no one hand rolls. They are also cheaper if you buy by the carton.
It looks like a pack is typically15+ EU in Europe, which is 17+ USD.
You can buy rolling papers and loose tobacco pretty much everywhere in the US though - gas stations, tobacco shops, etc. There is no reason why you couldn't roll your own.
Pinwurm@reddit
Plurality of tobacco/nicotine is consumed by vaping & pouches these days (like zyns). Cigarettes have an increasingly negative reputation.
Rolling papers are available in every gas station - but they're likely to be used for marijuana (a joint). I've seen people roll their own, but that's not common. Spliffs are rare, Americans do not mix tobacco and marijuana - we consider that a European phenomenon.
jldinatl@reddit
I used to smoke Drum a little in my 20's. Tasted much better than any pre-rolled I ever tried. I have not smoked at all in 30 + years so don't know if it's still available.
Porcupine-in-a-tree@reddit
I honestly don’t think I know a single person who currently smokes. So I have no idea.
derwones@reddit
You can, but Americans are too lazy to roll their own. Some prefer just stuffing it in a pipe too and sip on that
This-Professional-39@reddit
Back when I did smoke cigarettes, I rolled my own. Waaaay cheaper and I enjoyed the ritual
bizoticallyyours83@reddit
Some do. It's usually used for rolling "other" things though.
ExpectRelentless@reddit (OP)
Crack?
bizoticallyyours83@reddit
Crack is smoked with a pipe.

Marijuana.
NoContextCarl@reddit
Smoking has declined a fair amount in America overall, but rolling your own was always a niche thing here. Fairly uncommon, but I've known a few who had a rolling machine and would just buy bags of loose tobacco.
But for the most part, if you smoke you likely just buy packs here.
Astronaut6735@reddit
My grandparents did when I was a kid. One time, I brought a friend with me to their farm (I went there every summer). He saw my grandma rolling a cigarette, and asked me if she was rolling a joint 🤣. He had never seen someone roll their own cigarettes. My grandparents did it because they were very poor, and it was cheaper to roll them. She could roll a cigarette with one hand while driving a manual transmission car lol.
macoafi@reddit
I have the impression most people buying rolling papers aren't planning on putting tobacco inside them.
YoshiandAims@reddit
Yeah. It's cheaper. All my neighbors do it. My ex SIL and BIL did it.
My mom's family buys them pre rolled, all but one person.
It varies.
Our local smoke shop does really great business with their loose tobacco.
Blaizefed@reddit
It is exceedingly rare in the states.
This sub has a habit of pretending everything that happens anywhere also happens here. And while yes, I’m sure if you went looking for it you can find people who do. But in 50 years I have never actually seen anyone in the states roll a tobacco cigarette.
I did like in the UK for 14 years and it seemed like a quarter of smokers there do (did).
Tandom@reddit
In my 50+ years I personally have only met one person who rolled their own.
voteblue18@reddit
It’s way more common to roll your own joints.
doomgeneration91@reddit
I did sometimes when I was in college - the process of it is more satisfying than just a regular cigarette - but either way glad I left smoking in the past with my hair feathers and Jedi braid that turned into a single dreadlock
lyndseymariee@reddit
My dad did when he still smoked. I loved going to the tobacco store with him because it always smelled so good.
Vachic09@reddit
Most people who smoke don't roll their own cigarette.
krampusrumpus@reddit
I did when I was still a smoker. It was night and day cheaper, because loose tobacco is taxed differently in Virginia. It would be around $6 a pouch, with papers, versus $11 a pack. Not to mention I got a sense of zen from rolling a bunch in advance for a night out.
I will say, it was quasi-popular to roll your own amongst industry friends, it was never the mode du jour, even back when I quit a decade ago.
donuttrackme@reddit
They do, but it's not super common and probably getting less common over the years. Plenty of people put tobacco in joints to make spliffs though.
Gutcheck21@reddit

DroolHandPuke@reddit
Im from the US and roll my own with a little rolling machine. I like the taste of them better, they don't burn as fast as the prerolled store-bought ones, and as many have said, and the main reason i roll my own is the price. I pay just over a dollar a pack.(20 cigarettes)
5uper5kunk@reddit
It’s not super common but people definitely do it. I find it mostly concentrated in the punk/hippie subcultures. I smoked hand rolls for years until the tobacco I like suddenly turned to shit and as I was never able to find a good replacement I just sort of quit. I still miss it, especially smoking spliffs, there’s nothing like a spliff and a cup of coffee to really start off a good day of doing nothing
United_Wolf_9215@reddit
I roll my own most of the time, much cheaper due to tax differences.
Trambopoline96@reddit

More popular with stoners who are already rolling joints and spliffs.

SirPonix@reddit
I used to make my own cigs before I quit years ago. I didn't roll them, but I had a machine that would pack tobacco into a premade, empty shell with a filter. I started doing it because it was cheaper, but came to like it better once I found good tobacco.

My junkie ex-girlfriend from my teens and her junkie family exclusively rolled cigarettes with the cheapest tobacco and tubes you could find.
When the food stamps were late, they would walk around the projects and pick up old cigarette butts and empty the tobacco out to reroll it. They called it snipe hunting and they would literally walk from the projects to the local Walmart to raid the ashtrays for half smoken cigarettes to reroll.
idleigloo@reddit
People are vaping more than smoking now.
Its a real gross problem but people seem to be "oh well its not cigarettes" about it. Im more grossed out smelling vape that has 100% been in someone's mouth than cigarettes i can convince myself the smell is from their burning butt. I quit both years ago.
When I smoked over a decade ago I rolled my own when I was low in cash. There are lots of smokers that just buy smokes on the reservations for much less than they are taxed in US retail too, but rolling was always to save money. No one liked them better.

Kingsolomanhere@reddit
Almost all of the people I've known who roll their own cigarettes are ex-cons just out of prison. Once they get jobs they go back to buying commercial cigarettes like Winston or Marlboro. A pack of Winston Reds are still around 6 dollars a pack in Kentucky
funktion666@reddit
Uncommon. I know some folks would do this to save money and they like the ritual. This was 10-15 years ago. However, tobacco is becoming less and less popular in the US.
Rolling our own weed is more popular than tobacco, but still more common to buy “pre-roll” joints than roll your own. We really like convenience in the US.
Practical-Ordinary-6@reddit

The last smoker I knew personally died from lung cancer almost 15 years ago. I literally cannot name an adult I know personally who smokes at all, and I haven't seen anyone roll a tobacco cigarette on their own since the 1970s. Surely some people do it.
Less than 10% of Americans smoke at all, and there are huge regional and socio-ecomic/social class differences in those rates. I can easily go months without seeing anyone smoke tobacco of any kind at all, much less hand-rolled cigs.
Grendal54@reddit
My dad used to roll his own, I think he smoked a brand called Prince Albert, came in a red can in the 60’s. Before that he smoked a brand that came in a small white linen bag with (maybe) a blue label.
Cigarette smoking is slowly going the way of the dodo. Vaping is popular with the younger set, wondering how long before they start dropping dead from the various throat/lung diseases and cancers.

Punks do, some people do. You won't have trouble finding papers because people use them for rolling joints. Not too many people smoke cigarettes anymore here and even less so in public. More "smokers" vape these so you really don't know what they are vaping but most of the time I assume it's a THC vape.

A whole lot less. 1 lb bag of premium tobacco = ~$16, 1 box of 250 rolling tubes = $4. So for ~$20 I can roll 12.5 packs of cigarettes (20/pack) and still have enough tobacco left over for another 8-10 packs.
Compare that to $35 for a carton (10 packs) of cheap cigs and around $60 for higher end brands.

Anecdote to demonstrate: We went on a trip to England with family one time. One of the cousins is a big smoker. We took a train to a nearby country (I cannot remember where) and he forgot his cigarettes. He thought he could do what he would do typically do in America and bum one or two off someone else. Every. Single. Person. Said no all day. He was so mad walking around all day without any nicotine. He didn’t want to buy any because they’re so expensive.
It made a bit more sense once he realized everyone was rolling their own and didn’t have pre mades. This had literally occurred to none of us until he finally noticed several people doing it. He still talks about how rude the people from that country are though.
ThatArtNerd@reddit
Most smokers buy tailor-made cigarettes here. When I still smoked cigarettes I’d roll my own when I was spending extended time overseas somewhere where there was a huge price difference between tailored and roll-your-own (like Australia) but otherwise my preference is to buy them in a pack

I did for a couple years in the early 2010s. I could get a half pound+ of “pipe tobacco” (called that to avoid cigarette taxes, really just rolling tobacco) for $10 or less and a couple packs of Tops papers for a buck each. That was enough for at least a carton worth of cigarettes when a carton of name brand cigarettes cost $60+ (in my cheaper state, at the native reservation which is also cheaper due to tax laws). It was mostly a cost thing, but I also enjoyed rolling my own. I quit years ago though, and that same carton is around $100 now.
