Having a throwback movie night with my nephew, any suggestions?
Posted by bluemagic222@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 409 comments
Hey guys
Hanging with my 9 year old nephew for a few days and want to have a movie night. Not trying to follow in our parents footsteps, they let us watch any damn thing, lol. The Shining still scares me at my big age š Iād appreciate any suggestions. And for those of you who have kids, what have you introduced them to that theyāve been absolute fans of??

Best movie/trilogy ever!
Soris@reddit
I tried watching BTTF with my under ten year Ā old in a plane ride. Not what I remember because back in the day Ā I watched the edited version on network television. Ā Itās rated PG, but unedited thereās a high amount of cursing, and of course Doc gets shot with a machine gun, the mother is downing vodka at dinner, Michael J wanting to buy a truck to get busy with his gf. Ended it early.Ā

This is the answer.
I have adult kids, they come home for this trilogy. Also have a 8 and 6 year old nephews I watch a few nights a week. They also love it, and have been a part of our binge watch for 2 years.

I loved Summer Rental as a kid and no one seems to remember it. Itās one of the movies I dubbed to a blank VHS tape and had in rotation with Spaceballs and The Wizard. Those were my movies. I hadnāt even seen Star Wars yet still loved Spaceballs. (I blame my parents.)

Spaceballs is awesome. Obviously it's better if you've seen Star Wars, but it's still funny as hell. I just watched it again a couple months ago.

The Wizard is essentially a 90 minute infomercial for Nintendo. Also, Christian Slater!
As a Xennial I was of the right age to be immersed in video game culture. The Wizard was released several months BEFORE the release of Super Mario Bros. 3, which was the final game they play in Video Game Armageddon. We all knew the secret location of the first warp whistle because of that movie.
Oh, want to know why else that movie is important? It was Tobey McGuireās first movie credit (near the end, he is in Lucasā goon squad and has some dialogue).

Can never go wrong with a boy and some Star Wars; that's the one that really hit for my niece and nephew.
I can tell you Goonies didn't work, nor the Xmas classics (Xmas Vacation, Home Alone, Elf (well, Elf was okay), wwhich have bene on the menu because we normally see them at the holidays.
Ghostbusters got a very moderate thumbs up.
I suppose you could always go Toy Story or Iron Giant -- any kid who doesn't respond to those must be kinda broken inside. I never tried them with my niece and nephew because as a Gen X they never really felt like my movies.
Or you could just take a big swing and give him some PG13 like Weekend at Bernie's or should've-been-PG13 like Bill and Ted's. I mean, what's an uncle for if not teaching a too-young nephew to giggle at "69"?
WoefulKnight@reddit
I remember coming out of Bill and Ted's and my mom being very concerned I would start using 'medieval dickweed' on a regular basis.

A lot of the early Adam Sandler movies are ok for that age. Iāve watched happy Gilmore and big daddy with my 9 and 11 year old
bony-tony@reddit
Ooh, good ones. I feel like the worst thing in Billy Madison is "he called the shit poop!", but I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff.
We showed the niece and nephew Happy Gilmore last year (they're jr high / high school now), and it was reasonably well received. That said, I think the grade was inflated a bit by the whole dress-like-Adam-Sandler memes going around (my niece had just adopted his current late 50's and fat enormous Hawaiian shirt / basketball shorts look for Halloween; I still don't understand why).
No seriously, it is/was a thing? https://www.reddit.com/r/teenagers/comments/xydkje/my_school_is_doing_spirit_week_and_one_of_the/

Solid. Also, BMX Bandits is more comedic for the kids, since the whole thing is wacky chase scenes where teenage Nicole Kidman and two joke-cracking Aussie boys ride their bikes around the Sydney area to evade colorful bumbling crooks.

I have a 14 yo and a 10yo. Gotta gauge personality, maturity, and attention span when youāre choosing. Also, awkwardness within the movie. Thereās a reason that we have ā80ās PGā as a separate rating consideration in our house. Here are my suggestions:
