Someone just invited me to Xennials and I didn't even know that was a thing

Might as well just call me a fucking boomer. I just made a comment about being a GenXer/Millennial on the cusp and someone said "you're a xennial! Join us!". LMAO I didn't know we had a name.
So here I am. 1980. What a time to be alive.
electron-envy@reddit
Im obv bias but I feel like it's a very well defined micro generation. We were children of the 80s and teens of the 90s and we experienced both the analog and digital worlds while impressionable youths

I had this movie on a long play VHS tape I recorded off of HBO on my TV/VCR back in the day along with “Demolition Man” and a more or less forgotten film called “Brain Donors.” I watched that tape until it literally snapped. Thank you for this.
TheWildTofuHunter@reddit
Brain Donors!! I reference it ALL of the time and nobody gets it.

Brain Donors with Mel Smith who played The Albino in the Princess Bride!
airportspongebath@reddit
An underrated classic that I still blow people’s minds by reminding them of from time to time. “Hey did you know there’s a Marx Brothers movie by the guys who made Airplane starring John Turturro, the albino guy from The Princess Bride, and a guy who fucking eats a candle at one point? Yeah it’s actually pretty funny.”
brodievonorchard@reddit
I don't believe I've watched it since renting it as a teenager. I'll have to see if I can find it.
ScreenTricky4257@reddit
I always say that one mark of distinction for us is that we didn't see Star Wars as kids.
Boomers grew up with the cheesy low-budget sci-fi movies of the 50s, so Star Wars with its special effects took them back to their childhoods.
Gen-Xers saw it in the theater or in re-release.
Millennials saw it on tape when the prequels came out.
Gen-Zers saw it on DVD or Blu-ray.
But we didn't have an easy way to watch it until we were in our teens.
ladyliferules@reddit
I saw them as a kid. We had cable with HBO and then a huge satellite dish. Maybe it depends what your parents liked.
sparkyblue5@reddit
Incidentally, I call us Generation X-Wing because the original trilogy release dates were 1977–1983. :)
Mochigood@reddit
I saw it for the first time in a mythology class in highschool. 1997 or '98.
ZeniraEle@reddit
'84 and I saw the rerelease in '97
Competitive-Teach675@reddit
I'm '79, and I saw ROTJ in the movie theater. It's one of my earliest movie memories.
For me, Transformers, GI Joe, and Star Wars were the big deal for me.
I would play with the toys too, had Millennium Falcon, T-47 Airspeeder, Twin-Pod Cloud Car, then of course the figures, Han in the blue parka. Then the Luke figure from ROTJ with the black hand. I'm sure we had more, but those stand out the most. I had way more toys in Transformers and GI Joe, though.
I even had all the movies on VHS tape, and I would watch and rewatch them.
macklin_sob@reddit
For me it's remembering VHS not being priced to sell initially to the rise of big home releases on VHS for sale into the DVD revolution.
DCpurpleTart33@reddit (OP)
you guys I had the movie "Splash" on Beta. It was my prize possession for at least a year.

Ah youth! I feel like one other defining characteristic between Xennials and Millennials is that many of us got to at least begin to establish careers before the recession hit in 2008–2009, whereas many Millennials entered the workforce to find no jobs available. We lucked out!

Feels like the Xennial generation was made cause Millineal became more of an insult for a while.
The cut off for GenX was too soon. Alot of us spanned 2 generations with our brothers and sisters. How can we be different generations if we grew up together as brother and sister? I played Oregan Trail in grade school! Ultimately I guess it's all just meaningless classification

the GenX in me never cared about the label but this sub Reddit is way better. Welcome!
CMarlowe@reddit
Maybe a year or two ago I came over from the Gen X sub. I'm '79 so technically, yeah, but someone growing up in '69 versus '79 will have had some pretty difference experiences.
Yours_Trulee69@reddit
I am '76 but definitely identify more with xennial than gen x.
tourist1537@reddit
'76 here too and very much relate more to Xennial. My husband is early '76 and he's very Gen X.
RelevantElection2962@reddit
I’m ‘81 and my husband is ‘76. I’m very Xennial and my husband is very Gen X. We have a lot of over lapping experiences and memories but sometimes he’s borderline Boomer. When he starts to complain about “young people” he’ll say “Those Millennials…” I’m like you are complaining about Gen Z stuff. Leave my people out of it.
omg_stfu_wtf@reddit
Same, I'm a late 76-er, but definitely feel way more Xennial than Gen X.

DCpurpleTart33@reddit (OP)
Yes! I'm 80 and my brothers are 85 and 87 and we had totally different childhoods!
bug1402@reddit
I'm '81 and my sister is '83 but late '83 so was in classes with primarily '84. We were never not in the same household but we have very different memories/ experiences.
I have some theories like being the oldest and spending more years I can remember things from (we moved in '89) with our gen X 2nd cousins and Aunts/Uncles (very close in age to some of them) and I also tended to hang with the upper classes in high school but it is still weird to me how different pur childhood memories are.
nochumplovesucka__@reddit
Im 77 and my sister 84. Literally the xennial span. Definitely had different experiences growing up. When I graduated high school, she was just starting middle school
Specialist-Leek8645@reddit
For real. I'm '81, brother '86. Different parents in the same bodies! Whole new style of parenting, new standards, suddenly supportive (!?) Like who are you people haha
Fabulous-South-9551@reddit
81 and my closest friend (that’s not from high school) is 88. I always ask her things like “remember this?” Or “ did you watch/do this as a kid” and she would be like “um, no”. I see is as the same age a lot because we have a lot in common but I’m about to turn 45 and she’s not even 40 yet!!
ipaintbadly@reddit
My partner is 83 and I’m 77 so we’re both technically Xennials…but our lived experiences are a lot different too.
nochumplovesucka__@reddit
Born 77, my girlfriend born in 85. While there are certainly differences, there are alot of similarities as well for an 8 year age gap.
Cashmeade@reddit
I'm '82, fiance is '86 and our childhoods and adolescences had several notable differences. It's amazing how much difference a few years can make.
flamingknifepenis@reddit
I’m ‘85 and my sister is ‘88, and it’s striking how different our childhoods were just based on technology and popular media. That’s a huge three years for some reason.
My brother is ‘91 and he might as well be a different species.
Ivy7424@reddit
85 and one of my best friends was born in 1990 and boy did we have entirely different childhoods.

Dude, I'm a 76-er and that Gen X sub is all Boomers.
Competitive-Teach675@reddit
100%, I think anyone born in the 60s should really be a boomer, and the Xers should be 1970 to 1980.
ShowMeYourHappyTrail@reddit
Just did the same thing recently. Posted in a Gen X thread that not all of us Gen Xers went through the same experiences and I was getting annoyed at all the older Gen Xers for being a-holes about it and someone said I should come here. LOL! I've resisted calling myself a Xennial and still do for the most part, but I definitely feel more welcome here than I did there.
Competitive-Teach675@reddit
I consider any Xers born in the 60s boomers (they sure act like them), and they should really redefine Gen X as 1970-1980.
It isn't until one is born in the 70s that they stop acting like a boomer.
ughyoujag@reddit
I usually find the Gen X and millennial subs very weird and not at all relatable. Welcome home, OP.

LMurch13@reddit
I can't imagine being in the same generation as 1965. I'm ('75) closer to a millennial than the oldest Genx. When I think of 1965, I think of 8-tracks. We had Magnavox boomboxes with dual cassette when I was a kid.
Working5daysaWeek@reddit
I'm at the end of November for 79. I'm definitely more an Xennial and Millennial than anything else.

Berlin, Germany. The Wall. Cold grey hue over everything. Low altitude jet maneuvers. Winter smog. The Polish (black) market. Customs and their "Papers, Please" vibes, when travelling by glass-green passenger train through East Germany to visit Polish relatives.
That Di Caprio meme where he leans forward and snaps his fingers at a tv in recognition, whenever I watch Andrzej Zulawski's "Possession"...

'80 here. I remember the early days of Millenial, when it included 1980. Then someone decided it should start in 1981, and threw us all out. Here to complain about the young people and tell them to get off our lawn. :)

Same, friend. I still think “Xennial” is corny as hell but it’s accurate for us (1980 here). I saw an interesting image of someone charting the different “gen”s and we were the only only one that fucking OVERLAPPED with two others. That probably tells you a lot. Anyway, welcome.
Also, thinking your own generational designation is corny as hell is probably about as “Xennial” as you can get. So, y’know…
Whatever.

I’m 78, dropped out of high school, went to college about four years late, I was like a captain america or adam adamant frozen in time. I was always a bot of an outsider though, liking things long before my time as well as things meant for kids later than my peers, so I find best alignment with Xennials, Gen X always said I was too young to be Gen X anyways, but I know Gen X was first coined to describe Boomers in the 50s.

Yeah I gotta remember to say I'm Xennial. I was talking to the neighbor and said Elder Millenial almost proudly. Until he said he was Gen Z. I remember when Gen Z were the little kids!

I was looking up family members I had never met and a 3rd cousin had a post about their microgeneration on FB...that's how I learned and everything in the post made sense. We lived our childhood as GenX, but our teenage/young adult years with the internet boom.
Specialist-Leek8645@reddit
We were taught how to survive in one world, then it was replaced. We had to very quickly get back on our feet and adapt. I hope historians remember us for our versatility. Maybe it's all the microplastics lolz

Welcome. I probably only heard of the micro-generation a few years ago. My impression was that it was a newish term? I'm trying to go with it, seems cool. There really were a lot of unique things that happened in the 80s, 90s and 00s. We kinda just swam through it. Lots of motion and flashing lights lol. Seems we're all a little weird.
