i haven’t seen these in years. might be niche, but this really takes me back to a very specific era. drop your memories if these crossed your path.

Bidis, I used to think I loved these… yet they’re sort of miserable to smoke, albeit fun
Dog_Baseball@reddit
And an Old English 40oz
issi_tohbi@reddit
I can’t believe these are illegal now 😭 I still miss them and my lungs still hurt.
knowone1313@reddit
I haven't smoked for well over a decade, but I'd be tempted for one of these. I didn't know they were illegal.
Rob_LeMatic@reddit
There was some dumb law passed in 2009 which they easily bypassed by reclassifying them as mini cigars, so you can still get them in the US
Congregator@reddit
They’re not the same, the “cigars” are like clove flavored swisher sweets. Not wrapped in cigarette paper and have a terrible pull
deltadeltadawn@reddit
Which is ironic and amusing because the etymology of cigarette is literally little cigar.
RedBeardedMex@reddit
Cheeky bahstads! I'll have to keep a lookout!
avalonfaith@reddit
Oooooh, I didn't realize. I just responded to someone else about flavors and California. Haha
a_solid_6@reddit
I wonder if it's because you're not supposed to inhale a cigar?
killjoymoon@reddit
They so aren’t nearly as fun. I bummed one off someone once (I think I gave them a buck because I remember those days where cloves were a little more expensive) and my lungs twisted after my second puff. So rough. Also found out later you weren’t meant to inhale them.. as I was told anyways.
EvanGooch@reddit
You can still buy these. They aren’t illegal.
Moraii@reddit
I can’t find them anywhere. I miss Christmas in my face.
musashiXXX@reddit
https://www.cigarsinternational.com/product/djarum-black/DJA-MM.html
Congregator@reddit
These aren’t them, these are the cigars. I was telling someone elsewhere these are comparable to swisher sweets. The cigarettes are unavailable : (
avalonfaith@reddit
Flavors are illegal in California. So stupid. So if you, like me are here or in another state that passed some bullshit, just hop on down to MX (I'm like a few miles away from TJ) or to what ever state is Cole's and you can get your fix.
The_Bard@reddit
Djarums were my gateway drug into getting hooked om cigarettes. Much effort later I quit smoking....only to be handed flavored cigarettes free in a bar as a promotion. Got hooked again. Flavored cigarettes should be banned.
Otisthedog999@reddit
If they had given you flavored nicotine free smokes you wouldn't be hooked again. The flavor isn't the problem.
The_Bard@reddit
No it was a promotion for flavored camels. Camel lights were my brand of choice
lovedumbcat@reddit
There’s a pretty good reason why flavored cigarettes were made illegal. Tobacco companies were targeting kids. If anything, blame tobacco companies for not doing a better job of marketing solely to the 21+ crowd.
much_longer_username@reddit
Well, you see, only children like flavors, that's why all adults consume only flavorless grey paste for nutrition.
lovedumbcat@reddit
Making the packaging and advertising appealing to kids is the problem. Odd that folks feel they need to advocate for tobacco.
freddbare@reddit
Gullible Brain worm make you like cats says what?
justfirfunsies@reddit
I don’t smoke, but what fucking packaging was marketed for kids?
Kids are vaping 14,000 different flavors of bullshit in mass amounts all day and tobacco cigarettes have been at an all time low already. California is also on of the states with legalized marijuana, no? I support this but that shit if anything is marketed for younger audiences, should that be banned again?
“Blue berry yum yum” come on…
lovedumbcat@reddit
It’s by design that tobacco companies are naming things like blue berry yum yum. You’re supporting my argument.
justfirfunsies@reddit
You need to read slower… I said marijuana companies are labeling products “blue berry yum yum”.
IAMImportant@reddit
across the pond there's a vape store every 10 feet with every flavor imaginable, cigs have to be hidden behind a counter out of sight though, go figure
barefootincozumel@reddit
And in Mexico, you can get all manner of cigarettes, but vapes are illegal. None of it is logical, really
freddbare@reddit
Yeah, cuz the cartoon fucking camel is why I smoked... So stupid. If you fell for that I've got a bridge to sell you and the more other people's money you throw at homelessness the more it is fixed!!!

RedBeardedMex@reddit
Well said!
Congregator@reddit
You can’t get them in the U.S. anymore as cigarettes, you can only get them as a cigarette sized filtered cigar, and they’re nowhere near as good.
They’re like clove flavored swisher sweets
Face88888888@reddit
The cigarettes are illegal in the US. They are sold as “cigars” now.
ShupGlitto@reddit
The only difference is the count (12 instead of 20). It is the same product.
Face88888888@reddit
Yeah, as u/darklilim said, cigars by definition are wrapped in a tobacco leaf. They’re also thicker now. It’s similar, but not the same.
You can read about it here
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_Smoking_Prevention_and_Tobacco_Control_Act
And here
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djarum_Black
ShupGlitto@reddit
Thanks. I used to smoke. Including Djarum Blacks.
Darklilim@reddit
Not the same product. They use cigar wrapper instead of cigarette paper. Tastes completely different.

ZuBrain@reddit
They were fir a while in wa state, now legal again
issi_tohbi@reddit
They are in Canada where I live 🥲
PetuniaPicklePepper@reddit
Are these the same as Captain Blacks?
birdieponderinglife@reddit
Why are they illegal?
Robbed_Goddess@reddit
When they banned them it was some version of "think of the children!". They also banned all of the flavored Camel cigarettes at the same time.
Not gonna lie though, the whole reason I started smoking as a teen was exactly because of cloves and the camels with the sweet citrus filters. They were basically marketing them directly to non-smoking youths.
Long_Run_Sunday@reddit
The Izmir Stingers were the shit. Showing up at a party with these and you were immediately elite.
Material-Imagination@reddit
Yikes. The mint crush was fine, but I liked tobacco-flavored Camels that tasted like tobacco. The silvers especially.
CreampuffOfLove@reddit
I only ever bought one pack of those, but I kept that case for YEARS lol
birdieponderinglife@reddit
So a bit like the flavored vapes we have today.
Kashek70@reddit
Those Mint Camels were amazing. I loved those things back in High School.
a_solid_6@reddit
Ever smoked one? It tastes great, but your whole body tells you you shouldn't be inhaling that.
birdieponderinglife@reddit
No I’ve only taken a drag or two from a cigarette in high school. Fanciest one was one of those rainbow cigs. I think they had a gold filter? Other than that, never smoked. I bought a pack of cigarettes and a lotto ticket on my 18th bday but gave them to a friend 🤷♀️
killjoymoon@reddit
I thought Parliaments were fancy because of their filter.

edasto42@reddit
They made marketing them as cigarettes more or less illegal. But marketing cigarellos is ok
much_longer_username@reddit
It also resulted in the rice paper being replaced with tobacco paper. They're gross now.
NotYourGa1Friday@reddit
I loved the clove cigarettes when I was in college. Just seeing these is making me feel like a broody English major.
Full_Championship609@reddit
Couldn't you just re-roll them, with your preferred paper? Might be worth it. They have rolling machines, if your hands aren't up to it.
Cutthechitchata-hole@reddit
Wow, i had no idea. Also, why did i think this was safer or cooler than cigarettes?
ButterscotchAware402@reddit
Safer? Who knows. Cooler? They're black and smell/taste awesome.
BeenisHat@reddit
They smell like you set your mom's spice cabinet on fire and then decided it was a good cologne. 🤮

killjoymoon@reddit

UbiquitousBot@reddit
As a goth I was required to smoke blacks but my friends hated them so I got them hooked on cherrys.
Deadshadow84@reddit
As a goth kids back in my day, I loved both. I had this fancy casket cigarette case that would hold Black, Cherry, and camel menthol.
CosminaDominator@reddit
I much prefer the Djarum Special (clove) ones.
WheezyGonzalez@reddit
😂 can’t believe I actually tried those

KaleidoscopeThis5159@reddit

hasanicecrunch@reddit
Omg dijarum blacks!!! I didn’t think I was smoking bc it was just clove cigs. I can still taste them on the beach with my friends. Then Obama banned flavored cigs and they went away. Bam I picked up smoking regular tobacco cigs. (Parliament Lights lol) which turned to Camel Turkish Gold or Blues. Luckily I managed to quit without any trouble a few years ago.
ScumbagLady@reddit
I was a huge fan of these and the Bali cloves. I remember them being between $4-$6 a pack, which was super expensive at the time lol glad I don't smoke anymore. I switched to Newport 100s (Cadillacs) and smoked them for at least a couple decades.
But these Icebox (I didn't smoke the lights, but this was the first image I found lol) were the best menthols. I used to put them in the freezer because I took the "Icebox" literally...
RealityOk9823@reddit
Never seen those before! Brown and Williamson used to make a really smooth, really light menthol (more like mint than menthol) called Bel Air. I got a pack or two before they quit making them.
Dildo_Shw4ggins@reddit
This reminded me of my friend who used to steal packs of Kool from his mom. She kept cartons/packs in the deep freezer, I guess to keep them.. cool.
edasto42@reddit
I play in a goth/deathrock band and I’ve gotten ‘tipped’ from fans with a Djarum.
Dog_Baseball@reddit
Ur band sounds cool. On Amazon music?
edasto42@reddit
Yeah. Check out both Culture Hex and Scarlet’s Remains (I play in both). Also I am playing in a hip hop/souk band for some range in my playing, that’s Queen Yaa and the High Court if you wanted to check that too
Darklilim@reddit
Will do!

I started smoking these because of hot goth girls.
Whatchab@reddit
There they are. I walked past a spent butt of one of these the other day, smelled it, stopped and turned back to see it was exactly what I thought it was. So glad people are still smoking these (I mean sort of). Won't lie, if they made a Djarum Black (NOT REDS!) incense I'd burn it (yes, I still burn incense, and no I've never stopped!).
GraphicDesignMonkey@reddit
Sobranie Blacks were my jam, in the old goth clubs, I never liked the clove ones.

RedBeardedMex@reddit
These were the first smokes I ever got a buzz off of! And I quit immediately following that. But they were pretty amazing! And expensive too even back then at $7-$8 a pack. And that was 25 years ago! If they were still around I'd probably still smoke a pack occasionally.
Kinky-Bicycle-669@reddit
I still smoke these from time to time. 🤷🏼♀️
Mr_Poppers_Penis@reddit
Lol I can remember the many odd looks when I went into shops asking for a pack of Blacks
soopirV@reddit
Haha, I sold popcorn at a concert venue as my first job in like ‘93 before I could drive- it was an outdoor space, so I’d keep a pack of these in my supply drawer for slow periods (basically during the performance). I’d get reported to my boss periodically for smoking weed on the job but once I showed him what it was I was allowed to carry on. My mom would kill me if she knew I was smoking, so before I left the kitchen for the night I’d splash on some liquid smoke as a poor excuse to cover- I got away with it, but I sure made a lot of bbq sauce for a kid who sold popcorn 😂
REO_Speed_Dragon@reddit
I smell a dirty warehouse floor covered in rave flyers. My vision is blurred. The floor is rumbling at 120 BPM and I could use some water.
waterfowlplay@reddit
They sold these to me at Warp Tour in 98, I was 13. They also sold me a weed pipe that got me high my first time. And I saw Rancid and NOFX. Then when I got home I caught my parents watching porn together. Big day.
RhubarbIcy9655@reddit
Mom and Dad, how'd you get so rad?
waterfowlplay@reddit
Boomers closeted their radness.
Curtainmachine@reddit
I bought some there that year too. I remember sitting on the hood of my friend’s Mazda 3.23 hatchback in the flats just chain smoking them after the show(which I passed out in the full sun from dehydration and heatstroke in the pit during anti flag and woke up in the medical tent being given water.) Then I got Davey Havok’s autograph on my ticket…. Oh….to be 14….

OrangeJoe83@reddit
Smoked strawberry bidis at a Bosstones show in '97. Then smoked cigarettes for 24 years after.

I put them in a 'regular' cig case and promptly forgot the brand name, before you ask why I didn't Google it. I haven't smoked since 2020 but I'm always looking for that case.

Tasted horrible though, and as cool as I thought it was to smoke them, I could not finish my stash 😅

These shits, cloves, herbal cigarettes and the Camel flavored ones
Suitable-Peanut@reddit
Oh absolutely. They were big in Northern California in the late '90s I had kind of a hippie, funky vibe to them with the pink bag and the little string around them. My stoner/skateboard crew loved them.
The little fuckers were impossible to keep lit though but they definitely replaced cigarettes for a time.
Psycho_Mania@reddit
Yup! I remember coming across them all the time in Berkeley and Santa Cruz. There was this elusive underground hip hop/hippie crossover moment happening.
immortalkoil@reddit
Agreed. The Living Legends are who introduced me to smoking those things.
Suitable-Peanut@reddit
Hell yeah I forgot how much they talked about them! Mystik journeymen were the greatest
Psycho_Mania@reddit
Exactly. Chain smoking those things in front of La Peña waiting for a show to start. Living Legends, Mystik Journeymen, The Grouch, Eligh, Murs… Then rolling a blunt later in the night and getting on some video games. Definitely still get nostalgic for those days.
Suitable-Peanut@reddit
Absolutely. I was bumping Wu Tang clan and psychedelic era Beatles music in my walkman in equal measure.

I miss these. A roll was like $2 and there were so many in there. Fuck the government for banning them. I've tried to find them in other countries to go get them and then FedEx some back to myself, but I haven't been able to yet. I guess I could go to India, get some curry.
YourMathTeacher@reddit
Got the cops called on me and my friends for smoking these in front of a stripmall cause someone thought it was weed. 😂 made my adolescent day. Damn old ppl lol
anarchetype@reddit
I stole one from my father's room and smoked it because I thought it was weed, so I could see that.
Starbreiz@reddit
Holy shit bidis. I smoked these in college and everyone thought i had joints to share
i_nobes_what_i_nobes@reddit
And we had these too! Haven’t smoked in 15 yrs so not sure if they still exist
rooftopburners@reddit
Had a long run with Bidi's. Stopped when my second child was born and I could'nt sneak to smoke anymore.
Svinlem@reddit
Bidi’s! Can’t count how many times people thought you where smoking joints inside bars as an 18 year old. They asked for a hit and got super stoned roflmao
Scrotchety@reddit
Last I smelled these was high school graduation trip to Disneyland, one of those "go down Friday morning come back Saturday afternoon" overnight affairs, and we had stopped for breakfast at Denny's or Coco's or Carrow's along the CA valley and the two ultra goth girls were smoking those in the lobby, looking elegant and refined like high elf priestesses, and the smell hits me and at first I think it's weed and judging by the Economics teacher who used to LAPD scrinching his nose he thought the same and the cost for fucking up big on the trip was getting surrendered to the local sheriff's station and having your parents bail you out \~ 4 hours away mind you \~ and he said What is That I Smell? and cool as a cucumber one simply says BDs and whips out the pack with a flourish and he had a "move along folks" veneer but tweren't nothing he could do, they were 18 and it was like stepping through the threshold into adulthood
4luminate@reddit
Would smoke these after hours at the golf course. Cigarettes? No way. Bidis? Hell yeah.
This takes me back so hard.
ripmatek@reddit
I remember these from the 90’s. Looked for them a few years back and I guess they were banned for some reason.
Gimlet_son_of_Groin@reddit
We got these and the flavors were the reason. There was an urban myth that they were rolled in tea leaves, so you got caffeine and nicotine 😂
ScumbagLady@reddit
Smokin' bidis as I burn my calories...
hextasy@reddit
I was looking for these not long ago and was surprised I couldn't find them a head or smoke shop
SkarlyComics@reddit
Our Jamaica Mart had them but they were like half this size

Mangalore Ganesh Beedies! (“Psssst…You know….if you smoke it all the way down past the little string they tie near the bottom, they put like just a tiiiny amount of weed in each one…..”)

We called them BDs back in the day and yeah niche smoke shops not gas stations to score
Walkaway20@reddit
Cloves
Then I learned they pit your lungs and decided even my very minimal recreational use wasn’t worth it
Reyreyseller_3098@reddit
My older cousin is the person that introduced these to me. They smelled and tasted weird to me so I never could get into them, but such a distinct experience that you had to be all in on them to enjoy them.
Emannuelle-in-space@reddit
Went to Ireland with my family when I was 14 and saw these in a gift shop. I bought them obviously and then managed to hide them til I got home. Showed them to friends and they laughed at me and threw them in a puddle.

Bidis! Our Indian owned gas station had these. Like 1997 - early 2000s. They were cheap and had so much nicotine lol
DungPedalerDDSEsq@reddit
Indian owned convenience store around the corner from my highschool sold these shits without ID and my buddy Goldie had us all smoking 'em.
Great conversation starters at parties.
I hated it when they cracked, but good times.
rikafell@reddit
Same I used to buy them when I was 15 from a place like that. The young entrepreneur that I was I would give them to my friend who went to a private school and told them it was weed. Sold them for 1 bidi at $5 a pop. Needless to say we made BANK until he got caught and expelled. Good times lol
Capital-Meringue-164@reddit
lol I just realized I started smoking earlier than I thought because I didn’t count these - freshman year in college.
LineImpossible3958@reddit
I used to smoke them on my breaks at Old Navy during the summer of ‘97. By ‘98 I was just smoking weed all the time

greenmelinda@reddit
Strawberry bidis?
Fillmore80@reddit
What's in the OP picture? Are those blunts?
nerdkraftnomad@reddit
I was just looking up the nicotine content in various types of tobacco products the other day and apparently bidis have a lot of nicotine. I don't smoke but I'd smoke a bidi.

I spent a summer studying abroad, and three of my classmates were super cool Indian guys. They smoked Bidis, so of course I gave them a go. They’ll always be associated with that amazing time as a college kid far from home. But damn, they hit like a truck!
fadingpulse@reddit
I was talking to a coworker about this like two days ago. I can still smell the grape flavored bidis.
Only_Impression4100@reddit
I got a pack of these at the Haji market in Camp Liberty , Baghdad in like 07, holy shit that was intense.

I first came across these at Lollapalooza 1997. Great show, and I refuse to believe that it was almost 30 years ago.
Da_Rabbit_Hammer@reddit
God, what the hell was even in these? I feel like hippies and possibly kids from Muslim families, and or kids influenced by Muslim/NoGE, would smoke these. Maybe because tobacco was seen as harm, where as smoking rolled up mystery material was not? They often intersected at a specific cross section of 90’s, at the time often referred to as “backpack” hip hop, kids.
cupcakesparklies@reddit
I loved clove cigarettes. I didnt really smoke them, cuz they were rough but I would leave them burning in my ashtray in my car to smell them.

Jesus Christ I just got a sharp pain in my chest just LOOKING at that picture. I sincerely think I would keel over and die in a pool of my own coughed up blood if I tried to smoke one of those things now but back in the day, hell yeah, I hardly ever went anywhere without them. Ugh
AntiqueCandidate7995@reddit
Yeah there was a golden moment in time where bidis were the thing. I remember the crackle and the taste and the head rush from them.
dontbeadick23@reddit
The crackle! Yes

My mother loved these....we equated it to her being a former smoker who really loved her some potpourri and incense.

I'm from North Carolina I grew up in the heart of tobacco country I just smoked cigarettes like my ancestors before me lol

babyBear83@reddit
Had a phase where we tried lots of different stuff from the fancy smoke shop. All their clove cigarettes and bidis we probably tried at least once. Then some of the more expensive cigarettes like Benson & Hedges, lol. I got into it because my cool Gen X older sister was occasionally smoking cloves. I did whatever she did.
thelizardlarry@reddit
Can still smell it. 10 cigarettes in one!
avalonfaith@reddit
Bindis???? I was just talking about these the other day. They are still at whatever Indian liquor store you go to. I just don't smoke anymore.
Cozy_Minty@reddit
I don't know why we loved to smoke these they tasted twice as horrible as a regular cigarette!

Dazzling-Skin-308@reddit
Or a skate punk.
I was somewhere in the middle... But ya, I miss bidi.

I bought them so people would stop bumming from me. I had already moved to unfiltered cigarettes and that got most people out of my pocket, but goddamnit some of those motherfuckers were insistent.
admin_bait14@reddit
Bidis!!!
tonytrov@reddit
I worked art department on two Bollywood movies shot in Philadelphia and the Indian crew had these. They would always share or trade them for different American items. Felt cool at the time but I'm pretty sure they are terrible for you.
Echterspieler@reddit
What are they?
CoyoteDressedAsWolf@reddit
We used to buy these from a booth at the state fair in the 90s when we were like 12 years old. They came in different flavors and they gave us a nic buzz once we figured out how to inhale. Been chasing that first high ever since.
Rampasta@reddit
I used to live in an old apartment building in fort valley, ga. Across the street was a chicken wing shack and an independently owned convenience store/gas station that sold biddies. When the cheapest cigarettes werent available or we could t afford them, we alsways reached for biddies and smoked them after getting a 12 plate of spucy teriyaki wings
Beetreezy@reddit
The word on the street was that smoking these would give you a hole in your heart.

Walking to the bus stop in HS, smoking strawberry cloves. It was a fun time.
WayneS1980@reddit
We had those. The guy at the 7/11 would sell to us even though we were underage because they “weren’t cigarettes” so it was okay…
Hntrbdnshog@reddit
The dude at our nearby convenience store didn’t even care about selling us kids cigarettes. He sold them to us when we were 12-13. I think it was so that we didn’t harass customers asking them to buy them for us but who knows. It was Florida in the 90s and cameras weren’t common.
bluemagic222@reddit (OP)
oh my god. lol
Mail_Order_Lutefisk@reddit
They sold me Skoal Flavorpacks under the same logic. Never start, kids, never start!
Ckn-bns-jns@reddit
We used to always buy those at head shops, Jamaican Style in Newport Beach CA was a regular spot I’d get them after surfing.
EvanGooch@reddit
Yeah, man.
I used to go to a small shop in my hometown called THE SMOKE SHACK around 2002 and get some bidis.
They also used to have more standard-looking flavored cigs. Chocolate, vanilla, etc.
Affectionate_Ask_769@reddit
Bidis and cloves. Yum!

0dayssince@reddit
Are they bidis?
thesqueen113388@reddit
Yea!! Harvard Square mid 90s I remember them being tied with a pink string. They weren’t my favorite I was a camel filters guy. But I knew plenty of pretty hippy girls who smoked these. Cloves too.
TheLooza@reddit
Beedies. 8th grade. We loved the head rush. Bought them from this little store in Santa monica.

"Bidi bidi bidi bidi bidi bidi bidi." Say it really fast until you screw up. It's fun. Have some fun this morning, or evening or wherever you are. Cheers.
Remarkable_Ease_7607@reddit
Bidis definitely had a moment!
My friends and I only knew of one shop in our city that sold these and we'd drive 20-30 minutes out of the way just to get them.
Sometimes we'd untie the string, soak em in water, unroll it, take the tobacco out and roll it back up with weed. Call it a Weedi and get a "Weedi rush"
Wild_Locksmith_326@reddit
Desert Storm they were acceptableical substitute if you ran out of cigarettes while on convoy
spraypaintsaint@reddit
In 6th grade, a lot of kids used to get dropped off at the skating rink. We'd hang out in the back corner and play arcade games. There was this older kid that would show up in the parking lot and sell bidis to us. Everyone thought he was in the Crips.
Aggravating-Baby1239@reddit
I always wanted them but didn’t know where to find them and I guess I’m not that motivated. Sigh
brainvheart143@reddit
We used to call it “out back” where we smoked these and many other things behind high school
sluggerbubba96@reddit
I had a co-worker a few years back that was obsessed with Bidis. There was a rastafarian market near his house and he always had Bidi cigarettes, fronto leaves and grabba.
The guy that owns a market near me grew up next door to a Bidi factory in India. He refuses to get them at his store, same with paan or gutka. He refuses to start somebody on the habit, good for him. It is strong stuff!
cbih@reddit
Are those bidis?!
bluemagic222@reddit (OP)
YES! they’re def banned! lolol

Once we found a shop that sold them in bulk for ~1$ and bought 50 packs. After a few weeks we were over it, so we figured out that you could open them up and roll mini blunts and the remaining stash ended that way.
pleasentlyPizza@reddit
I remember smoking this with a friend in her patio! One time that specifically stands out is when she told me how the foreign exchange kid from Japan kicked some football jock’s ass in a makeshift backyard boxing ring. Classic story of jock picking on the new kid, and getting knocked the fuck out.

I went to high school with a dude named Tejas. He was an Indian. He had these somehow. I bought them off him, I think it was like 2 dollars a pack? This is what I smoked before I just started buying Marlboro Reds, then later Newports. I still am not sure what the hell they are.
