Cat salems

Just from lap to floor, and it dies? I dunno, that doesn't add up. I have a much bigger problem with the word "unmedicated" in there, that suggests abuse much more strongly than pushing a cat off your lap.

As an outsider, the American culture of "no questions asked" retail returns is baffling. Do people really return used items just because they changed their minds?

Posted by Necessary_Angle2117@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 429 comments

bdrwr@reddit

Usually the item becomes unreturnable when tags are removed or the packaging is opened, and you usually have to keep the receipt to prove you bought it. You can sometimes get more leeway if there's a clear defect; like, if I rip the tags off a jacket, and then find a missing zipper, they would probably still take it back. Certain companies are known for having incredibly generous return policies, like REI. Usually these are companies that sell long-lasting, rugged gear. If you *expect* those boots to last 5 years, it's more reasonable to return after a month if they aren't meeting expectations. But policies like this are rare and notable.

Are tattoos considered a young person’s thing in the U.S.? Do older people also have tattoos?

Posted by Charming_Usual6227@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 491 comments

bdrwr@reddit

It's less common in older age groups, but tattooing has been around long enough that you can find old grandpas who are all inked up. There's also still some regional variations. On the west coast, everyone and their mother has a tattoo. In the south, where old fashioned Christian attitudes are still pervasive, you sometimes meet people who *still* believe that only criminals have them. My dad, who has a small tattoo on his chest, even went on a date with a woman recently, in upstate New York, who said she could NEVER date somebody with tattoos! They didn't have a second date, but I don't think she knows the real reason lol

Which bordering states would have the greatest benefit if they merged while making the most sense culturally?

Posted by Crying_in_99Ranch@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 554 comments

bdrwr@reddit

I think the entire west coast would make a reasonable and unified culture block. It's already more or less a "west coast" accent, and all three are pretty similarly aligned left-leaning states. NorCal already feels like the Pacific Northwest. I know LOTS of people with family spread across southern California and Washington or Oregon.

Charcoal tastes better, but gas is more convenient and easier to keep clean. Some people will insist that a gas grill does not make your food taste like gas fumes—these people are *liars.* Its faint but it's there. For someone totally inexperienced such as yourself, I recommend keeping it simple and cheap. Get one of those small, round, black charcoal grills. Once you've played with it and gotten a feel for grilling, then you can look at fancier options, smokers, multifunctional ones, etc

But you put that in the same bucket as Jan from accounting who has a Live Laugh Love poster and an "it's wine o'clock" mug? That application of the word "normie" is so widespread as to become meaningless. I also question how common you think animal bone jewelers are. Normie means a lot more than just "not a loser." Plenty of losers are nornal.

what is a normie?

Posted by Funny-Platypus-3220@reddit | greentext | View on Reddit | 90 comments

bdrwr@reddit

There are so many ways to interpret it... Like, okay, I've met people who are very socially and sexually active. They wear handmade or thrifted clothes only. They own flesh eating beetles which they use to clean animal bones to make goth jewelry. They go to art festivals and burning man and do psychedelics and wiccan full moon rituals. According to anon's criteria, people like that are *normies?* That's not the right term. Normie doesn't just mean "not a loser," it means following along with mainstream trends, norms, and expectations. An unmarried, introvert office worker is more of a normie than a festival hippie.

Men: Do you wear a wool coat when it’s cold?

Posted by topdownyeti@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 453 comments

bdrwr@reddit

I like the style of wool coats over puffers and synthetic rain gear. I actually kind of hate the really plasticy shit like Gore-Tex. I think it feels and sounds *awful.* I bought myself a black wool peacoat for college in the Pacific Northwest, where it's very very wet but not extremely cold. Whenever I'm visiting somewhere truly frigid, style has to give way to survival and I wear an actual puff jacket and many layers.

What does the compliment "This fucks." mean? And how is it used in a sentence?

Posted by strange_omelet@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 66 comments

bdrwr@reddit

"Fuck" is an extremely versatile swear with a million different uses. To say "this fucks" is a compliment because somebody who has lots of sexual success is often viewed as high-status. The perception of successful, attractive men is that they have lots of sex, so when you say "damn, that FUCKS," you're saying that thing is an exemplar, it's desirable, it's successful, strong, and sexy.

Are teenagers in America well behaved in public? Or are they up to no good?

Posted by Much-Parsnip3399@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 90 comments

bdrwr@reddit

It's the HOA cycle; saw something very similar in the neighborhood I grew up in. People who are well adjusted and have fulfilling lives don't bother to join HOA boards. The people who volunteer for those positions are naturally bitter, antisocial, spiteful control freaks. So, naturally, there's a ratcheting effect over time where HOA rules get progressively more restrictive, petty, hostile, and onerous. This continues until the regular people are so fed up that someone steps up, goes door to door on a platform of "unfuck the HOA rules," gets unanimous support, and the cycle resets.

Americans Do you like going on cruise ships? why or why not?

Posted by NoHold7153@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 650 comments

bdrwr@reddit

I feel the same way about cruise ships as I do about Las Vegas... I'm extroverted, I like partying, I like being in loud and exciting places with lots of people. I very much *enjoy* them, if we're just talking about my own selfish pleasures. But as someone who cares about the environment, fairness, equality, labor rights, and general decency, things like cruises and the Vegas strip *cannot exist* in the type of just world I want to see. Both are living monuments to waste, and an absolute nightmare of wage slavery propping up decadence. You can't *have* something like a cruise ship or a hotel on the strip without grinding a few thousand unfortunate souls in poverty and burning a few hundred thousand gallons of fuel and filling a few landfills with garbage.

Do Americans actually call teachers by their first name anywhere, or is it almost always Mr./Ms.?

Posted by Sea-Evidence-5523@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 723 comments

bdrwr@reddit

It's more standard to use Mr/Ms, but certain schools and regions have a culture of using first names, and it can even come down to the individual teacher's preference. Going by first names is seen as more personal and less formal; you see more first name teachers on the west coast than you do in the Midwest or the south.

Keeping Alcohl In Stock for Guests?

Posted by Roosevelt32@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 178 comments

bdrwr@reddit

You're by no means expected or required to keep alcohol on hand for your guests. But many guests appreciate it when you do, and it's often considered a mark of good hospitality. If you're going to keep something on hand, I recommend wine or liquor, because those keep indefinitely as long as you keep them in a cool cupboard. Beer goes bad much more easily, so it's not a good choice if it's going to sit in the pantry/fridge for months.

Iranian here, living in Iran. Wanted to know what you guys think about Iran war? Do you think its worth it for you?

Posted by Independent-Weird627@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 130 comments

bdrwr@reddit

Nope. Trump is nothing more than a conman, and he's willing to kill people if it means he gets to pocket another million dollars. On principle, I am against authoritarianism and organized religion, so I've got no love for the Iranian regime. But this war is not going to help the Iranian people, it's not going to make Iran safer, more democratic, less authoritarian, less violent... It's simply another attack for oil, and for Israel.

I spent a large chunk of my life thinking I hated it completely, but it turns out it's just country *pop* I don't like. It's easy to get sick of "cold beer, pickup truck, cheating on my wife" in a stadium with a catchy chorus for the radio. But there's a lot more out there being made by genuine musicians and poets with things to say about the state of the world.

Canned Soup as an ingredient?

Posted by Puppy_Bellies@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 245 comments

bdrwr@reddit

Many "poor people" dishes involve recombining cheap meals like that. That's not a strictly American thing. Also, certain canned soup brands are condensed/concentrated, so using it as an ingredient is closer to using a stock or a demi glace than just *soup.* The one main example I can think of is the classic green bean casserole, which calls for Campbell's cream of mushroom soup as the liquid base. It's delicious; classic Thanksgiving dish.
