Which of your kids' TV shows did you only tolerate out of love for your kids?

Ms Rachel. Don't get me wrong she's very good at what she does, but she's making my kid speak like an American. And some of her songs are annoyingly catchy. The last thing you want is to be trying to work and have bloody I'm So Happy playing in your head.

How do you swerve job questions at parties ?

Posted by claudetteandharold@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 535 comments

VodkaMargarine@reddit

You don't have to answer questions. Most people asking "so what do you do?" don't actually care about the answer they are just trying to make small talk, and grabbing the easiest way they can do that. You genuinely can just not answer and talk about something else. Occasionally people might think you are rude, but if the thing you choose to talk about is interesting or funny enough they'll have forgotten within a few seconds. If someone asks me "so what do you do?" at a party my usual response is "isn't it funny how that's everyone's first question here? What's the best answer you've heard to that so far?"

How did vape shops, phone-case shops and Turkish barbers become the holy trinity of high streets?

Posted by georgepcanning@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 233 comments

VodkaMargarine@reddit

If you own a commercial property that is empty then you have to pay the business rates. The government do that to discourage having empty shops on the high street. So people who own those shops are desperate to rent them out to literally any business so they are not unoccupied. Vape shops and barbers are extremely cheap to set up. And can easily be used for money laundering purposes. So it's a situation that is beneficial for everyone on paper. The government gets the empty shop occupied, the landlord doesn't have to pay business rates on an empty shop, and the people running the shop get to use it for dodgy organised crime purposes. Everyone is a winner. Except all the other people in the town of course. But who cares about them.

It was the same in Sheffield. John Lewis were central to the city centre regeneration scheme and the council ended up making loads of concessions to them, including lowering their rent to keep them part of the scheme. Then John Lewis just shut their city centre store screwing over the entire scheme. It's still a disused building right by city hall.

Yep. CO2 for electrical fires and foam for other stuff. Also a fire blanket. You should get a fire extinguisher. Imagine if you started a little fire and had no way to put it out and had to watch your house burn down.

What is the figure you think of when someone quotes a "comfortable salary'?

Posted by Desperate-Drawer-572@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 229 comments

VodkaMargarine@reddit

Salary is only one half of the equation. You can be on £100k but crippled with debt and student loan. Or you can be on £12k/yr state pension but have zero debt and three buy-to-let properties paying for your monthly cruise to the Caribbean.
