What do disgraced TV personalities do for income?
Posted by PsychologicalBus7357@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1054 comments
What do disgraced former TV personalities actually do for money once they’re no longer on TV?
People like Anthony Worrall Thompson, Rory McGrath, Justin Lee Collins etc after the scandals or cancellations from TV, what careers/income streams do they move into?
Do they live off old money/royalties, quietly work in Asda, local radio?
Always curious how sustainable a TV career actually is once the public profile disappears.
Lynvor@reddit
Whilst we are on the topic, it still shocks me just how welcoming the British public were to Ant McPartlin after his drink driving collision.
Wiltix@reddit
He had a very good PR consultant for that episode.
banananey@reddit
So much so that I completely forgot about it.
I remember him being treated like a poor victim at the time despite the fact that he could've killed someone.
Feeling-Ad6796@reddit
They did the same with Cheryl cole. She battered a woman in the toilet nightclub and the press treated her like a victim. It's all about the PR.
Even will smith gets treated like a victim abandoned acts like one after what he did.
oportoman@reddit
No Will Smith is still seen as a dick
parsl@reddit
That was Cheryl Tweedy - What ever happened to her?
Prior_Elephant_5187@reddit
It’s the fact she was getting referred to as just her first name like Elvis. May still do. Talentless, see better looking and smarter women in Newcastle who don’t batter people
ginbandit@reddit
The only celebrity conspiracy theory I buy into was that Cheryl and Ashley Cole were introduced by their PR firm because she had battered a Nigerian toilet attendant and he had a bad rep as a womaniser.
naughtymo83@reddit
I thought it was he was rumoured to be gay?
Feeling-Ad6796@reddit
Well yea makes sense. He didn't need pr though. He was a footballer selling to a market of predominantly men who wouldn't care if he was a womaniser and would applaud him for it.
She on the other hand was part of a band who sold to ten year olds and then progressed in her career into a tv personality on family shows, a style icon and a mary poppins/ mother Teresa nations sweetheart/ butter wouldn't melt type. Selling her autobiography or going on piers Morgan with tears in her eyes over how her husband cheated on her and oh poor me yet forgetting to ever apologise or admit wrong doing for her conviction as a violent offender. So yes she needed a very good pr team.
BertieBus@reddit
Then she had a child with someone she met when he was an actual child.
Majestic_Matt_459@reddit
And the man she had a child with was buying cocaine off a man he had intimate relations with (allegedly) 2 nts before his death. Anyway must go buy a turkey baster
Majestic_Matt_459@reddit
Oh id say he would welcome the PR - Footballers have short careeers and anything they can do to stand out is gonna help them get commentator jobs etc when they retire and sponsorship deals while they are playing - and he may have got paid for it - - also - and im not saying this is the case for him at all - there are some gay footballers and being set up with a famous girlfriend can be very handy - and Cheryl Cole definitely has form on that score
Mc_and_SP@reddit
“Anything they can do to stand out”
Born_Pop_3644@reddit
Not that I am an expert, and this may be a totally jumbled memory, but wasn't Ashley Cole's side to distract from that story about him and his male friends putting mobile phones up their a***holes?
mydoghasqueakyballs@reddit
And Kelly Brook. Laughing with Phil and Holly about punching her boyfriends in the face.
Feeling-Ad6796@reddit
Yep there's big double standards in the media. Remember sharon Osborne and a group of women laughing at a man getting his genitals mutilated by his deranged wife on tv in usa. Imagine men on tv laughing at a woman getting her genitals mutilated.
tiredfaces@reddit
Or the nation mourning Ozzy despite the fact that he's an animal killer and a wife beater
GingerSnapBiscuit@reddit
She battered a black woman whilst hurling vile racist abuse at her. It was worse than just a fight in a club toilet.
Sashapatu@reddit
In fairness the court found that she just battered her victim and hurled abuse at her without a racial element to it. So it was all fine.
LankyYogurt7737@reddit
I really felt like a crazy person through the 2010s when Cheryl Cole was all over TV and super famous and everyone seemed to just collectively forget she’s a racist thug who battered a cleaner and cause her actual bodily harm. Absolutely disgusting.
Feeling-Ad6796@reddit
Her claim in court was self defense. If you watch/read interviews, she is very well trained. She always stresses that they were celebrating a number one and had never experienced toilet attendants before. She makes sure to refer to it as an "altercation". She trys to make out like she was an innocent and naive person (yet this is at odds with image of the tough, indepentant, street smart girl who grew up on a rough and drug riddled council estate ). Notice how she never goes into detail about how it was self defense.
Just for once, instead of allowing her to laugh it off and act coyly, I would love an interviewer to say "how can you claim it was self defense if you got convicted of assault. Could you describe to me exactly what happened and why you think you behaved appropriately". Obviously that's never going to happen. Her PR team are too smart to let her go near an interviewer who wouldn't settle for the normal platitudes and cliches. Her image is too controlled and too many people make a lot of money from brand "Cheryl" for that to happen. Left to her own devices, I think she would crack. Under her PR protection, she will continue to claim it was just an "altercation" that wasn't her fault...
Wiedegeburt@reddit
Jesus I had forgotten about that , there was a racist tirade iirc she called her some bizarre archaic racial slur I can't remember.
bez_lightyear@reddit
Remember that short period of time - after Girls Aloud - when she was always introduced on XFactor as "The Nation's Sweetheart Cheryl Cole"? Bag of shite.
Junior_Factor8561@reddit
The old X Factor hyperbole machine! They bill every Leona Lewis return to the show with ‘she’s massive in America that’s why you haven’t seen her here for years’ but her career there has been: a number one, a top 20 hit, and nothing charting since 2009.
Feeling-Ad6796@reddit
It's because she was an attractive female. If she hadn't been hot or was a man or black she'd have caught hell for the toilet incident. Look at chris browne.
grishnackh@reddit
Chris Brown hasn't been cancelled or disgraced at all (although he should have been) - he still works with major celebrities and does sell out world tours.
Feeling-Ad6796@reddit
Chris brown was massively disgraced and received huge backlash across the media for his actions. Yea he still works but he got backlash and mass criticism.
GingerSnapBiscuit@reddit
Ahh yes, famously cancelled and never able to work again Chris Brown :D
bez_lightyear@reddit
I'm sure the expensive PR firm that was hired to rehabilitate her image didn't hurt either.
tobee777@reddit
There was a point where she was almost treated like an Empress. Constantly fawned over her as if we all loved her unquestioningly. Bizarre. But then that was a weird time when every minor celebrity was being termed a “national treasure”. Ridiculous and utterly cringe.
Ultimate_os@reddit
I think that was around the same time she got chucked off US TV shows because they couldn’t understand her geordie accent. 😅 so she became a ‘British sweetheart’ instead.
Brizar-is-Evolving@reddit
I’ve always known her as Cheryl Cole Sausage Roll.
Simpy158@reddit
I hate to say it but I think - don’t quote me, the family were South Asian - so the British public didn’t think it was quite as bad 😬🙈 I know! Don’t shoot the messenger
MCXXXVi@reddit
If i remember right the tabloids published a couple of hit pieces the family he crashed into who just happened to be asian immigrants.
dickiebow@reddit
So you’re saying that once you’ve made a mistake you should be permanently cancelled. You can’t repent, change and come back from it.
Lynvor@reddit
We have grossly different ideas of what we are calling a 'mistake'.
dickiebow@reddit
I hope if a family member of yours makes a ‘mistake’ you can find it in your heart to forgive them.
I hope if you have a child that gets addicted to prescription painkillers, you decide to help them rather than cut them out of your life.
hhfugrr3@reddit
Me too. Everyone hates a drink driver let alone one who does it and crashes... until it's someone they quite like off the tele.
mojacke@reddit
Not to shit on his mental health side of work, and potentially a bit niche, but Clarke Carlisle falls into this category for me.
New-Willingness2182@reddit
What did Clarke Carlisle do? Unless you mean the incident when he walked in front of a lorry and the aftermath?
mojacke@reddit
The drink driving convictions.
Tobias_Carvery@reddit
A friend works in media. Ant is one of ITVs biggest cash cows. I can’t remember the details but ITV threatened the papers / media and said if they bad mouth Ant then - I can’t remember the consequence but it was something.
So they didn’t. And that’s why Ant got away with it. Not because he was remorseful but because the narrative around it was tightly controlled. The papers could have very easily thrown him under the bus and the public would have followed suit.
ShanghaiGoat@reddit
As long as he’s learned from it, no problem. If he goes on to get multiple drunk driving convictions then, sure, vilify the prick.
FreeKey247@reddit
One is enough for me with drink driving
ShanghaiGoat@reddit
I understand, but if no one got hurt and he never does it again, I can let him get on with his life. The lead singer with Motley Crüe drunk drove and killed his passenger, he has since gone on to receive three more DUI convictions. I have nothing but contempt for that prick.
GeneralOuromov@reddit
A child went to hospital
ShanghaiGoat@reddit
Didn’t know that, so no sympathy
Oggabobba@reddit
People did get hurt
Ultimate_os@reddit
He was a drug addict as well.
Choccybizzle@reddit
Exactly. He didn’t try and dismiss it, he showed remorse. On top of being a familiar face for 30 years I’m not suprised he hasn’t been ‘cancelled’
Pen_dragons_pizza@reddit
I am not being funny but the people who watch their shows ‘Saturday night takeaway’, ‘Britain’s got talent’ and ‘I am a celeb’ are not the brightest people.
Same bunch that find Michael McIntyre funny and idolise anyone who finds fame after love island or matching reality shows and labels them brave.
DucksPlayFootball@reddit
I will die on the hill that Michael McIntyre is funny but people think it’s “cool” to not like him.
Just because he’s popular, doesn’t mean he’s not a talented comedian.
PartManPartLobster@reddit
He is the ultimate "Beige" comedian. Not very funny, but can still make you laugh sometimes. He's not offeanive, but not terrible, he plays it safe with reflective middle-of-the-road comedy you can watch lazily with your Nan. He's good at hosting shows but not a stand-out host. He's done well with his career but I can't see him going much higher than his current peak.
2Fast2Mildly_Peeved@reddit
For me, he's okay funny. Would never pay to watch him or turn on a programme he's on to see him, and I think there's much better comedians, but he's relatively inoffensive. But there was a point in time where he was absolutely everywhere which I think annoyed some people as he was overexposed.
glitterswirl@reddit
Honestly, being inoffensive is part of the reason I like him. I don't have to worry about someone getting horrible hurt or humiliated; he's not going to get cancelled; he doesn't punch down.
Not every comedian has to be some sort of boundary-pushing edgelord. Like, I can't stand Ricky Gervais because his whole schtick now is just "haha, I say offensive stuff and snowflakes get offended".
Michael McIntyre provides wholesome, family-friendly content to relax on a Saturday evening with.
2Fast2Mildly_Peeved@reddit
That’s fair. He probably is an ideal family friendly comedian and that is quite a large market.
Species126@reddit
I find his comedy a bit dull. But that's my taste — I like something a bit edgier. I find his joke setups predictable.
He is a decent host, though. He keeps stuff moving well and finds it easy to establish rapport with the guests.
Pen_dragons_pizza@reddit
He sits in the same category as Lee Evan’s for me, don’t get me wrong I found the guy funny as a teen but now I am older I see it’s just stupid noises and actions that carry the acts.
GingerSnapBiscuit@reddit
That doesn't mean its not funny though. Like, Tommy Cooper was all stupid noises and actions and his shtick was fucking hilarious.
Pen_dragons_pizza@reddit
Tommy cooper had the talent behind it though, he was also a bit of a pioneer in a way but the comedy scene has evolved since then. Michael is more of a poor imitation, leaning on this middle class, private school boy bit that he has extended his whole career.
I just find it so surface level and easy, you look at comedians that have incredible writing talent for jokes, and you compare to Michael, it’s just a bit butlins holiday style humour.
I imagine if you put Michael in a room with some other great comedians, the guy would get torn apart joke wise, I just don’t see a comparison to the current uk best.
But if you like him then all the power to you, comedy is subjective
SFButts@reddit
Slightly off topic. It impresses me how unwelcoming the r/grime community were to Ghetts after his drink driving collision. Pretty much wrote off one of goats after he killed an innocent man.
NettIeship@reddit
Wasn't he kind of pushed back on the public with the continued same exposure and the bad behaviour being swept under the rug. Too lucrative to shame. And not sinking to the same depths of sexual misconduct makes it pale in comparison.
Astrohurricane1@reddit
He was off air for about a year I think. I remember Holly co-presenting I’m a celeb that year and the lil fella doing BGT on his own.
AlexSniff7@reddit
See I am absolutely not defending his behaviour at all/I am not even a massive Ant&Dec fan but I know if it was your favourite celebrity who did it you would willingly move on with it and forgive them.
MCXXXVi@reddit
This seems to be the difference between the bbc and other media outlets.
If it was a bbc presenter this would have been dragged for ages.
When it happens to anyone in the itv or cowel sphere its gone pretty much instantly, with some pretty sympathetic pr if it even gets as far as the public.
There was zero effort to bring Walliams to account, he just filtered off quietly.
box-o-locks@reddit
That was very well covered. He could easily have killed a child, but he's still considered a national treasure and it's all been forgotten.

CuteMaterial@reddit
Ant was clearly extremely remorseful for what happened and took the relevant steps to better himself. He's also been sober ever since.
ANUFC14@reddit
I think that’s mostly because Dec is a genuinely nice bloke and it helped wash ant’s reputation
JohnCasey3306@reddit
I'm not interested in him or celebrities as a whole -- but I'm glad it doesn't follow him around. The only thing I despise more than celebrity culture is the idea that shit sticks from a holier-than-though public who are individually worse more often than not.
ArtichokeDesperate68@reddit
Shocking indeed! If it was anyone else…
Tuarangi@reddit
The fact they won the TV award for the 18th year in a row in January 2019 after his conviction in April 2018 shows the industry cares only about money
kush__1@reddit
Good question. I wonder what Philip Scofield is doing for money.
spy-on-me@reddit
There’s no way he’s not a multi millionaire and able to live comfortably without working. He was on TV for decades.
Feeling-Ad6796@reddit
Doesn't mean he's a multimillionaire though. Don't conflate American tv personalities with English ones. They are on much lesser salaries.
JohnnyOneLung@reddit
He was one of ITV’s highest earners for nearly two decades.
He is loaded
missOmum@reddit
A quick google tells me his net worth is between 9 and 12 million pounds.
ljh013@reddit
He was on a good enough salary, well into the 6 figures. Given he was on TV for a considerable number of years, he made enough to a buy a nice house and probably put enough away that he is technically a millionaire. He was also in his early 60s by the time his career was over, so nearing retirement age.
audigex@reddit
I doubt it's even "technically" a millionaire (which I assume you take to mean assets + cash not just cash)
He was reportedly on over half a million a year by the time he left This Morning just for that show, not including adverts or work like the Jubilee or Prince Harry's wedding, soap awards, 5 Gold Rings, Educating Joey Essex etc etc
Even after his divorce he should have multiple millions in liquid assets
AirconGuyUK@reddit
Scofield will have been on several hundred grand for many years. He's never going to hurt for money again.
He was earning £600k a year on This Morning apparently.
Ultimate_os@reddit
A few more years and he’ll be a guest on a BBC celebrity game show.
Feeling-Ad6796@reddit
You'd be surprised. 600k a year on paper. After tax, agent fees and his team get paid he'd be more looking at 200k take home pay maybe tops.
A nice salary but in these days doesn't get you as far as it once did. Look at the prices of properties in the south east alone in the last few decades.
However having said this he got a 5 million deal with itv at a stage so yes you are right, I'd be pretty sure he has enough to do him for his remaining years.
Express-Ad9716@reddit
He was almost certainly a ltd company to reduce tax, pop members of the family on the payroll for random bits of work etc. plus all the work outside this morning like voice overs, other shows and advertising.
My dad was an accountant and put me on his payroll when I was 16 for mowing the grass in front of his office 🤣, for £10 a week. Accountants know their shit.
AirconGuyUK@reddit
This seems incredibly unlikely. Even if he was PAYE, which is pretty much the worst tax position you can be in, he'd be taking home £329,786..
But he will have a good accountant.
Feeling-Ad6796@reddit
His agent and team get a cut off the money too. Not just tax.
box-o-locks@reddit
But he was also married. I imagine she would have got a fair chunk of it. And the house.
audigex@reddit
I doubt she'd just "get" the house, that only tends to apply if she keeps custody of children - which isn't going to be the case here as their kids are 30+
More likely they sold the house and split the proceeds, or he bought her out of her half
kush__1@reddit
Hue Edwards, Noel Clark, Michael Barrymore, all ended up broke or having significant financial issues
PartyPoison98@reddit
Michael Barrymore is doing fine making TikToks these days. I've not heard that Huw Edwards is broke, and he's very near old enough to claim the good pension that the BBC couldn't take off him.
chartupdate@reddit
He's rich enough never to have to work again. You don't spend 40 years on TV without amassing a large cash pile.
Status_Pure@reddit
And all the product promotion he did constantly on social media
chartupdate@reddit
That's true. And all those W By Ay Cr adverts will have paid a small fortune by themselves.
audigex@reddit

blueroses8000@reddit
He meets his PA at 10.30am there so by the time they order and eat it’s probably closer to having lunch just 1 hour later.
Why would you wake up at 5am but not have breakfast till so late, and then also have lunch really early after that.
Dutch_Slim@reddit
Intermittent fasting? Eat everything in 7-8 hours and then fast until breakfast again.
blueroses8000@reddit
People who intermittent fast usually miss the meals that have passed in that time though, they don’t just fit the same 3 meals but into a shorter space of time, and especially not when the breakfast is that indulgent and unhealthy everyday.

Yeah you’ve got to TISM harder. I’m a woman and I’m really focussing my tism to maybe make my tit flop out and abuse more people.
So far, Ive only assaulted someone’s sense of fashion with a floppy bra strap but it’s a start.
--BooBoo--@reddit
This current heat wave is a good time to really work on this - put a strapless bra on and the boob sweat will help it slide down and encourage the flop, and the added pain of a strapless bra in 30 heat makes it far easier to build up enough irritation that abusing people comes surprisingly easy.
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
Cries in highlander. It’s warm here but cloudy and windy - cannot muster boob sweat. Will look to janet jackson for further instructions.

Ohh I'm jealous - I'm in the midlands UK and it's 31 degrees and I'm a menopausal woman so boob sweat is in great abundance. I heard on the news there were two places in the UK that were hotter than Tenerife today and I reckon both those places are under my boobs!
I definitely feel a Justin Timberlake assisted boob flop is going to be more fun than trying to get a rando's baby to latch on, and is less likely to get you arrested, so I'd go down that route if I were you. I'll look forward to seeing that on the news later.

Freeze pops crushed then wrapped in kitchen tissue make for wonderful boob coolers.
Also, rub water onto your neck and fan yourself or run your inner wrists under the cold water tap to cool down in a very pleasant but socially acceptable way.

... Ok? That means absolutely nothing. I don't understand why people thinking they have a condition - or worse, knowing someone with a condition, makes them some kind of expert.
People with autism and/or ADHD are MASSIVELY more likely to get in trouble with the law. The % of the prison population that is neurodivergent is much higher than the general population.
Before people starting kicking off at me, I have autism and ADHD. I'm just sick of seeing people trying to sweep the negative consequences of these conditions under the rug. The same is happening with mental health. Everyone's all about "mental health awareness" until it comes to acknowledging the darker side of it, then we have to shut up and pretend it's not there.
We are regressing.
HenryHarryLarry@reddit
Also autistic and I agree we need to acknowledge that there are a subset of autistic people who do cause harm to others. Yes, we are also likely to be the victims of crime but there are situations where a person’s traits do contribute to their (unpleasant) behaviour to others. It’s a complicated picture and everyone immediately jumping to “I’m autistic and I’ve never done such a thing” doesn’t help the victims of people who do do this shit. Nor does it help potential future perpetrators to realise they may be capable of the same and understand how to avoid it.
Antwalk1981@reddit
I dunno man. There's a subset of every community that does bad shit. Im not sure that this is an autistic spectrum issue. This seems more like a societal and justice system issue to me.
Evidence suggests autistic people do not commit crimes at higher rates than the general population. However, they are disproportionately overrepresented in the criminal justice system and are more likely to face incarceration when charged. The higher incarceration rate is driven by complex systemic factors rather than the condition itself. Key issues include:Legal and Procedural Vulnerabilities:
Autistic individuals are more likely to exhibit social naivety, misinterpret social cues, or demonstrate a lack of consequential thinking. These factors make them susceptible to manipulation and recruitment into criminal activity, or cause them to react in ways that police may wrongly interpret as uncooperative or suspicious
.Disadvantages in Court: Autistic defendants may struggle to maintain eye contact, display "unconventional" body language, or have trouble effectively communicating remorse. These communication barriers can result in more severe penalties and longer prison sentences.
HenryHarryLarry@reddit
Do you think that any of that applies to Wallace? Was he manipulated or recruited into criminal activity? Did people regard him as suspicious when he didn’t deserve to be censured? Is he in fact facing any criminal charges for his behaviour? I don’t disagree that those points you highlighted are a big issue for some autistic people but there can be something else going on here as well that isn’t just victimhood. Everyone is capable of causing harm to others, even those who “don’t know any better.”
As I replied to someone else who seems to have deleted their comment taking my reply with it, autistic traits are not always without serious consequence. Someone who values honesty but who finds ambiguity and indirectness tricky can think that telling someone you find them attractive is an acceptable even positive way to behave. If you believe honesty is always good, it can be hard to grasp that it’s context specific. Likewise if you are a detail focused person it can be hard to not get stuck on the minutiae of a defence (she laughed, it was a joke!) rather than being able to step back and see the bigger picture that it was still inappropriate. Some autistic people have very grim special interests that can influence their behaviour in very unpleasant ways. It takes effort to practice seeing things from different points of view, especially from points of view that are more marginalised.
In some circumstances autistic traits like the ability to hyperfocus on what we find important and disregard entirely what we don’t find important, bucking social norms and having a strong sense of justice (or so called justice that suits a particular worldview) can be dangerous. Add celebrity into the mix and you may find yourself as unwilling to change or examine your behaviour.
Rockpoolcreater@reddit
I'm also autistic, but I don't think it's the condition that causes the behaviour, but how people are raised and corrected/punished for their behaviour. My uncle was autistic, he clearly knew that bullying my mum and torturing my mum's animals was wrong as he hid it from their parents. When he was finally caught and my mother believed, that was when he started on the animals. My grandmother didn't correct my uncle properly or listen to my mum, so he knew he could get away with it.
As and adult he tried the same crap on my aunt after they were married. She stood up to him in a way that obviously scared him and made him realise that he couldn't do that to her, so he didn't. At his funeral people talked about how loving he was and how good he was with animals. His autism had nothing to do with his choice to be a cruel bully, he just wanted to do it and knew he could get away with it.
HenryHarryLarry@reddit
Sorry to hear your mother went through that.
I agree that parenting and other social experiences are very important. What you learn about how the world works and your place in it. But autism affects all aspects of our life, literally it’s how our brain works, how we relate to people and understand relationships, friendships, workplaces and the world around us.
As an example, people who value honesty and find ambiguity and indirectness tricky can easily think it’s okay to inform someone you find them attractive, no matter the environment. Logically, honesty is good so understanding that it is context dependent is something some autistic can people struggle with. People who are detail focussed can get hung up on minimising the harm they do (she laughed, it was a joke!) rather than stepping back and seeing the bigger picture that it was still inappropriate. If you don’t practice putting yourself in others shoes, autistic people can struggle with seeing events from different points of view (especially people whose experiences we hear less about). People with “dark” special interests can become fixated on hurting people (there are several recent court cases featuring people who are autistic that mention that the person was obsessed with violent crime and wanted to take part in an attack to become part of that world).
We cannot pretend that autism is some narrow thing that only affects a sliver of our existence. Our brains control our behaviour, our decision making and our ability to self reflect. That is all tied up with autism, which gives us laser like focusing ability on things we care about (and total disregard for things we don’t care about), strong belief systems and the ability to reject social norms. In some cases those strengths can be dangerous. Add in the toxic mix of cishet white male privilege plus celebrity culture and we have a very difficult situation of shutting Wallace’s type of behaviour down once he’s become accustomed to getting away with. We see similar stuff going on with Elon Musk.
ChilternRailways@reddit
You don't know he knew it was wrong - all you know is that he had reason to hide it. Could be not upsetting others, could be to avoid a bother, could be for any number of reasons but your guess is apparently fact.
If he wanted to do it then he would have kept doing it after he'd grown up. It sounds like as soon as he understood the impact he stopped. This is quite an autistic response.
I'm sorry but how are you autistic and not aware of the binary worldview/mroality issues many autistic people have?
Sounds a lot more like he didn't understand until someone made it clear to him, if he never did it again and was loved.
Rockpoolcreater@reddit
He tried to bully me as well when I was 18. Luckily one of my mum's friends was in the house at the time and stood up to him. He absolutely knew what the hell he was doing. He was picking on people and animals who were more vulnerable than him. Besides your last sentence, that's the same for every single child. They are born not understanding, parents are meant to teach them what is and isn't acceptable. If someone knows enough to hide behaviour, they've learnt enough to know they shouldn't be doing it. If they're still doing it they're choosing to do it, knowing it's wrong.
Trust me, he absolutely would have kept doing that if he could have. But having a knife pulled on him obviously taught him that he wasn't as big and powerful as he thought he was. So he learnt that being abusive to that person would bring consequences. Unlike the abuse he caused when he was a child which went unpunished.
Antwalk1981@reddit
So are you suggesting that him getting his knob out IS because he's autistic? I also wonder whether there's something about the legal system and the way the police interview or that our society works that affects the amount of autistic people in jail. I mean the statistics say that black people are more likely to be criminals than white people yet (most) people understand that this is due to historical and modern racism, prejudice and a lack of equity in our society. I'd be curious to know what the other factors in autism/add diagnoses and the legal system are. Do autistic people tend to be in poorer and more vulnerable positions because I would imagine that this could be a factor? Does the fact that a lot of autistic kids think in a way that our schools don't account for with learning mean autistic kids are more likely to get frustrated with the education system, drop out early and end up involved with crime because they are poor. We all know that poverty is the biggest indicator of likelihood of criminal behaviour. To be clear I don't have any close friends or family with autism/add. These are just the questions I tend to ask when someone tells me An entire community is more likely to be in prison or commit a crime and has real statistics to back that up. There's almost always a sociological reason why crime/violence etc is higher in certain communities than the national average and so far the reason has never been theyre just more likely to be criminals because of (insert inherent characteristic here)
MrFlibblesPenguin@reddit
Imagine spending your entire adult working life totaly protected and insulated from any and all concequenses of your actions, where no matter the outrage you cause you are sheilded because the number one rule in the industry is you dont mess with the talent, so all your problems just disapear and you are told you are wonderful, even the neurotypicals get bent out of shape in that enviroment. Dont know if Greg is as he claims, but the problem is one inherent to stardom and celebrity rather than neuro divergence alone.
AnonymousCapybara72@reddit
I don't disagree but want to add something (somewhat related) to your point about being protected from consequences.
I had a patient once who was a bloke with autism and ADHD. One day he started kicking off because he wanted someone to wheel him outside to smoke weed with his mates and was told we didn't have enough staff.
He threatened to attack a nurse and said, verbatim, "you can't do anything about it because I have autism and ADHD."
So while I think autism and ADHD do affect behaviour and we need to understand that, at the same time I think never holding neurodivergent people accountable for their behaviour affects their behaviour - they learn and are fully aware that they can do what they like and be protected from consequences, and it becomes an excuse.
So I think what I'm trying to say is, there needs to be some balance between understanding and making allowances, and holding people accountable. It's a complex issue.
MrFlibblesPenguin@reddit
No I agree, we absolutely must be held to account (and through that process hopefully learn, with patience understanding and the occasional kick up the arse). But we are a tailored fit for an off the peg world in which conformity to the "norm" is desired...yeah its a bit of a bugger.
jiujiuberry@reddit

PabloMarmite@reddit
The 85% includes ADHD and other conditions as well as autism, but yeah it’s extremely overrepresented in the prison population.
silverfish477@reddit

AnonymousCapybara72@reddit

Tynoc_Fichan@reddit
It's not a superpower, its a pain in the arse
ceelo_purple@reddit
They said acknowledge, not promote. You can disagree with them without misrepresenting them.
And it's not like this isn't a legitimate and longstanding difference of opinion within the disabled and neurodiverse communities. There is a place for "The only thing disabling me is a society that won't accommodate me" and "My autism is a superpower" type rhetoric, but we do people a disservice if we don't also acknowledge that, for example, chronic pain conditions will never sit easily in the social model of disability and that there are people who find the effects of their autism debilitating and could do without the additional pressure of the expectation that they make it a superpower.
(This is my take on the wider point, not a vindication of Greg Wallace, whom I believe to be a dangerous prick independent of his neurotype.)
Mustbejoking_13@reddit
ADHD with no impulse control, the brain just can't slow down enough to think a course of actions through, so yeah, getting in trouble is par for the course. I'm sure there are statistics out there about the percentage of prison population with some form of neurodiversity, and I'm sure its way higher than we'd think.

There's a woman in my town who does this. She gets drunk and goes on rants at people on the town's local Facebook group then when she's sobered up she blames it on her autism.
There was one point where a couple of people posted anonymously on the group. Personally, I'm not a fan of people doing that. But she went mental at them, and then tried to blame her autism, saying it caused her problems when she couldn't see people's names or something. I called her out for it, saying that she can't just keep using that as an excuse when she's trying to bully people, and people got mad at me. I was out of town at the time and she even commented saying that I wasn't welcome back in town, as though she thinks she's running the place.

This is something that is going to become really popular, if it isn't already.
My nephews are both neurodivergent and never been been generally rude or outlandish, they struggle in any ways and don't verbalize it.
And yet someone in our team, that was both a trainer and somewhat a team leader, took a demotion. And ever since keeps being rude to me, over compensating and even making comments just because I pick up extra shifts. And then finally last night, we were working together and she said, amongst her normal outbursts, even in front of customers, she's autistic. And she can't help it.
I'm all for being accommodating and supportive but I think she's just overly stressed and not coping and has much less to do with her disability. She took on too much and is now trying to 'keep face'. But I'm going to start writing things down now, just in case.

I often think that when defence lawyers use it during mitigation in court for violent crimes
Sivear@reddit
I feel this one is a bit more complicated, though.
Someone who has received a late diagnosis will be at risk of offending due to substance misuse, challenges around integrating fully into society, handling emotions etc.
Not to say that all later diagnosed people will commit crimes but if you’ve gone most of your life not having a diagnosis and feel alienated and different you are then more likely to commit crimes.
A lot of neurodivergent diagnosis comes from offenders. It’s absolutely not a ‘get out of jail free card’ but it’s worth noting from the defence so the judge can bear in mind how their rehabilitation may be more likely post diagnosis.
HenryHarryLarry@reddit
It absolutely is complicated. Understanding why someone commits a crime is a big part in helping them to not reoffend but also in spotting risk factors in other people and hopefully preventing similar incidents. If we know that social isolation is a risk factor for violent crimes we should be working hard at providing opportunities for people to integrate in ways that they can manage. It’s the right thing to do obviously, morally speaking, but sometimes you need a worst case scenario to convince anyone in power it’s truly necessary, to unlock the required resources.

InfrangibleSexWizard@reddit
Yeah, it's an unfortunate side effect of these things getting more recognition in society. Ask anyone in teaching - as more systems have been created to support kids with special education needs and disabilities, it's also meant a lot of parents have noticed it might be a good excuse or deflection from their crappy parenting, or just a crutch for their child who misbehaves. This then just means that the kids who needed help before still have to fight to get it, because there's a huge waiting list for support.

Tuarangi@reddit
When it's something they've never talked about before e.g. to bring awareness and support others who don't have their resources, but suddenly when they're accused of wrongdoing they whip out a diagnosis to excuse their behaviour (in their minds at least) you have to question it. Also, simply the fact that they think a condition like autism or ADHD is an excuse for that behaviour when so many people have it and don't is also pretty bad as it's blaming the condition not accepting their actions were wrong.
TheYorkshireGripper@reddit
Would you diagnose Fred and Rose west as ADHD/autistic and let them off for their crimes?

TheYorkshireGripper@reddit

Tuarangi@reddit
Not reading social situations is not the same as making inappropriate sexual comments to women, something millions of people manage to avoid doing every day. Not even that, but blaming the BBC for “not protecting him” from his own (claimed but undiagnosed) autism, directly saying the BBC should’ve told him not to take his pants off around women, because - as he claimed - it was part of a neurodivergent condition which he did not know he had at the time.
So the BBC must be 1) psychic, 2) mental health specialists, 3) able to diagnose someone who hasn’t asked for help with their situation, 4) able to identify that this undiagnosed and unreported condition will lead to inappropriate and problematic actions, 5) able to preemptively take action on these things which hadn’t actually happened yet.
That’s quite an ask, when the alternative is… he’s a dick, who - whether on the spectrum or not - behaved inappropriately and doesn’t want to admit responsibility.
PabloMarmite@reddit
Wallace is diagnosed, has a family history of autism and had actually done a lot of work for the autistic community prior, funding an autism school and being the patron of a charity.
It doesn’t excuse his behaviour, but it’s regressive seeing the autistic community trying to cast doubt on the diagnosis of an autistic person who’s done bad things.
Sea-Breaz@reddit
And herein lies the problem. I’ve known and worked with many people on the spectrum and not one of them has ever behaved inappropriately to me, or anyone else. So as soon as he gets called out on his gross behaviors, he immediately puts the blame on autism. It’s so insulting to the vast majority of people with autism who actually know how to behave.
Indigo457@reddit
I’m neurodivergent for a range of exciting reasons and it winds me up to no end when people blame the crazy shit they do on their disabilities, partly because it kicks all of this sort of stuff up and people just assume that he’s making it up, but mainly because I think if you’re going to get your cock out at work or whatever, neurodivergence has very little to do with it imho.

Russell Brand pretended to find God and immediately started grifting gullible MAGA evangelical types. Sells magic amulets online for $300 a pop.
g0dn0@reddit
I think Brand is now the yardstick for just how far a celeb can fall and just how big a piece of sh*t you can become when you think you’re untouchable (I’d say Jimmy Savile, but really, he didn’t get any kind of comeuppance as it only fully came out after he’d died). The levels of hypocrisy were incredible - his podcast was almost entirely based around ‘exposing’ how elites/corporations/politicians are lying sleazy grifter scumbags. The hubris of the guy is another level - does he really think his sudden conversion to Christianity is going to fool anyone into thinking he’s a reformed character? And pivoting to trying to build himself a new persona in the US, because, well it seems it’s ok to be a famous rapist grifter there. He’s going to prison. For a long time.
AirconGuyUK@reddit
He really did fall hard. He was in so many Hollywood films, and was married to Katy Perry at the height of her fame.
Now he's the rapist guy who has a podcast and is obviously grifting.

Leucurus@reddit
He used to speak very well about the nature of drug addiction and alcoholism. How criminalising addicts was counterproductive, and the need for compassion and treatment rather than vilification. All thrown away now.
GingerSnapBiscuit@reddit
His patter used to be semi decent, I found myself defending him not too long ago but only because I remembered this side of him rather than the newer grifter side.
i_literally_died@reddit
Being a left winger grifter pays, too. It's all just money for opinions.
KittyGrewAMoustache@reddit
No it doesn’t 😂 who with tons of money is out there paying people to spout left wing stuff?! You think there are big business owners, billionaires etc forking out to try to convince the public that more regulation and taxes and workers rights are better?
There may be a bit of Russia or whoever doing a bit of it to try to stoke divisions but all the moneys in trying to push the right wing narrative for obvious reasons. That’s the narrative that says fewer taxes fewer regulations and fewer rights are actually ‘good’ for the ordinary citizens. No one with money is spending it trying to convince everyone they need to be regulated and taxed more.
i_literally_died@reddit
The engagement/views generates money even if the opinions may not be desired by Big Bad Billionaires. It even helps the right to have someone to 'own' in badly framed TikTok shorts.

inspectorgadget9999@reddit
You mean he used to say listen, mate, what we’re fundamentally dissecting here is the profound, labyrinthine nature of chemical dependency and alcoholism—this desperate, spiritual malady masquerading as a behavioral defect. For epoch after epoch, the overarching apparatus of the state thought it wise to penalise and criminalise these deeply traumatised souls, which was, let’s be entirely honest, a completely counterproductive, self-defeating exercise in systemic cruelty. What was desperately required, of course, was a radical influx of boundless compassion and holistic, soul-centric rehabilitation, rather than this toxic, punitive vilification designed to ostracize the vulnerable. And yet, look at us now—all that hard-won, enlightened consciousness, just carelessly tossed into the cultural abyss. Shattered. All thrown away.
Leucurus@reddit
This reads like you used AI to make a verbose parody of Brand's style, but have failed to actually reflect his viewpoint on the issues surrounding treatment of addiction.
Jumpy-Jello-@reddit
All parroted from any NA meeting you can walk into on any given day. He just rebranded all their literature and stuck his face on it, earning a mint in the process.
Blue_Tomb@reddit
I remember catching a TV show he did talking with young people about drugs back around 2008, and for all his other behaviour elsewhere he came across as articulate and substantial. Guess he really was just a scumbag though.
Leucurus@reddit
I guess it’s possible for someone to be right about the need for compassion in treating drug addiction and wrong about sexual consent. That, and his subsequent swing to the grifting Christian right, makes him loathsome beyond redemption and undermines his earlier eloquence about addiction.
Brickie78@reddit
There's a great podcast called Origin Story that covers the history behind political ideas/movements/people, and they did an episode on Brand, which I found really interesting.

DameKumquat@reddit
Cretins would prefer not to be associated with him.
In case you weren't aware, cretin is a term for people with brain damage from thyroid deficiency and the word is nowadays considered a slur.
In modern usage, "cretin" is an offensive and derogatory insult used to describe someone who is perceived as extremely stupid, foolish, or obtuse.
Because it is widely viewed as deeply offensive, it has largely fallen out of common everyday language.
Uhtredr@reddit

Jordlr99@reddit
I am in no way defending him or saying he didnt do what he is accused of, but it is incredibly easy to sleep with someone, only for them to cry rape later, sometimes months or years later, especially if you are a celebrity. How are you supposed to defend yourself against those allegations, and even if you do manage to prove your innocence, those allegations have already done irreversable damage. Do we all need to walk around with a lawyer drafted consent form and pen, just in case?
lapsedPacifist5@reddit
Have you not seen Russell Brand? Have you not heard what he says? Have you not seen his ability to find the verses in the bible that support him and his conversion? Rather than accept his fate, he hired expensive attack solicitors to sue The Guardian for libel only he lied his way through the trial against solid evidence so ended up losing and having to pay costs that are probably crippling, despite his successes.
The Guardian - Noel Clarke ordered to pay initial £3m in legal costs to the Guardian after losing libel case
g0dn0@reddit
Omg good shout. Yep. Wasn’t he charged the day after he won a bafta as well? Ouch. His unchecked behaviour on the set of Dr Who was one of the reasons Eccleston quit, along with Barrowman’s behaviour. (Getting his tackle out at every opportunity). Eccleston apparently took it the execs a number of times and they did nothing. So he quit.
mcmanus2099@reddit
I don't know I think Brand is more a reflection on tv industry managers, execs and culture.
We all knew what he was like at the time. It was famous that whatever show he worked on he would try to sleep with any and every women he could. He joked about it on his radio. Women would be told, "don't mind Russell, he will hit on you constantly whenever he's in your presence just ignore it". It was just baselined in that women would get verbally sexually harassed where he worked.
There was this whole machine to paint him as just irresistible rather than someone who was a pest until women gave in.
Brand didn't create this on his own. The BBC were heavily complicit. Not only did they just accept him constantly asking colleagues for sex but they helped build this "irresistible façade".
And they didn't think he was getting women drunk and assaulting them? The guy who couldn't stop pressuring women? The thing with Brand unlike Saville is he never hid any of this. It's just now BBC bosses (and society to some extent) who enabled his behaviour now are looking back going "oh that was wrong we had no idea".

A man who uses so many words in the wrong context both in speech and in writing can’t be that intelligent. You’ve fallen for his act. Word salad vocabulary. Obviously often doesn’t know what the words mean as he uses them incorrectly. A total charlatan.
Tattyead@reddit
He’s certainly not a genius but he is reasonably intelligent. He’s definitely quick witted, capable of being funny, unusually eloquent, able to access critical thinking of a sort and pick up and quickly act upon social clues. He’s not a moron but he is a self serving narcissistic arsehole, with a hugely inflated sense of his own abilities, importance and ego. He’s clever enough to spot the escape routes when he’s cornered and the next grift to pull. Nothing he’s ever said is particularly insightful but some of it will catch the attention of the vulnerable and daft lads looking for song someone with answers. (He has loads and most of them are wrong. But he’s clever enough to be dangerous. And should probably not be underestimated.

Not (Disraeli about) him but accurate enough.
grishnackh@reddit
I don't mean to be rude to you (as it will probably sound), but Brand is a cretins idea of an intelligent person.
He is not particularly intelligent - he seems reasonably well read and capable of using lots of big words in a sentence, but that is not exactly a particularly reliable yardstick for intelligence. It is simply part of his grift to appear to the gullible as if he is some sort of intellectual.
JagoHazzard@reddit
I recall Ernest Hemingway once said something along the lines of, “I know those ten-dollar words, but I don’t need to use them.” I think about that when I hear Brand.

You’ve had a couple of people say it, but let me reiterate that he is patently not intelligent. He may think he is! I’ve always thought he was a vile grifter.

Junior_Factor8561@reddit
It’s only in fairly recent times that the Mirror has seen court action for phone hacking (last two years), he’s always bundled in with being the culprit but all the settled cases so far have been News International/Sun/NOTW and he was only NOTW editor for a year back in ‘94. Andy Coulson was editor during most of the confirmed phone hacking years and did prison time for it.
Further Mirror investigations may yet see the old idiot charged and do time, can’t for the life of me see why they weren’t investigated from day one as it was pretty clear a lot of their exclusives must have come from dodgy sources too

Then it all went away overnight for unforgivable shit and fuck him.
Still curious tho.
Some_Ad6507@reddit
All in the name of “research”
RalphRolfeRail@reddit
Out of all the names here, he was the most disappointing for me. People Like Us might be the funniest thing I have ever seen.
iain_1986@reddit
I genuienly would have thought the Thick Of It would have failed without him tbh, as Malcolm Tuckers punching bag.
But then they found Rebecca Front and Roger Allam!
kevkevverson@reddit
Love Rebecca Front. Her CV reads like some of the best British comedies of all time
Alas_boris@reddit
People Like Us is genuinely one of the best radio and TV shows I've ever heard/seen. The writing and humour is so subtle yet brilliant.
Apparently after it was discontinued due to the Langham issue the BBC Execs commissioned The Office to fill the gap.
John Morton eventually did well from the Mockumentary style with 2012 and W1A.
EchoesofIllyria@reddit
I don’t think that can be right. Langham was arrested in 2005, long after both People Like Us and The Office were finished.
Specialist-Mud-6650@reddit
I suppose he was well into his 60s when all that happened. You'd expect a successful actor/comedian/writer of that age to have a comfy nest egg or assets.
Depends how much he burned through in legal defences, of course.
There's an interview here that mentions a Kent farmhouse after prison: https://flintoff.org/the-thick-of-it
yaboiwreckohrs@reddit
Jesus, couldn't understand why everything was taken away from him?? He downloaded and viewed CSAM. I believe him that it was for researching a tv show and he wouldn't hurt a child but there's no needs to download and view it!
Specialist-Mud-6650@reddit
I'm not sure I believe him about the show. That's just a convenient cover.
That interview smacks of massive delusion, and his whole family wrapped up in it too. Very sad.
nonoanddefinitelyno@reddit
Mid 50s when arrested.
And his major success was only relatively recently at the time.
Specialist-Mud-6650@reddit
I think he comes from money, so he is probably okay.

Our mum worked 3 jobs in the 70s. So, no.
BrangdonJ@reddit
I suspect he continued writing comedy under a pen name.
Dr_Bumfluff_Esq@reddit
I used to live in the next village over from Chris Langham. I used to see him occasionally on the train to and from London, always smartly dressed and during normal commuting hours, so I assume he had some sort of work related meetings going on.
As an aside, Ian Hislop lives in another village nearby and used to get the same London train. It was interesting to see that both men were generally ignored while travelling, but in noticeably different ways. Hislop was left in peace; Langham was shunned.
Able_Resident_1291@reddit
He acted in a few things since he was released from jail, most recently in 2020. He's 77 now so most likely retired since then.

Jim Davidson appeared at mine last year.
Prior_Elephant_5187@reddit
Thing is with Jim, how many other comedians from the 70s and 80s do you see on TV anymore? None. They just roll with changing times and not say they are cancelled when they’re actually not saleable goods anymore. That’s Jim.
ArmWildFrill@reddit
There's a career that should have been interred some years ago.
Prior_Elephant_5187@reddit
Oh but Jim was cancelled he says. Nothing to do with being fat old and unfunny and not in fashion anymore. It’s because he is too dangerous to ‘woke’ people and needs to be silenced by the elite. 🙄

Richard Madeley got away with it (tescos didsbury with champagne) due to a lapse of memory
ConstantPurpose2419@reddit
As I recall he was pretty badly mentally ill at the time. I don’t think he deserved to be cancelled at all. Remember when the same thing happened to Winona Ryder?
Indigo457@reddit
I dunno he always had the air of being a bit of a cunt, from memory
Pandita666@reddit
He only took a block of cheese. You can walk into Tesco Local now and walk out with half the fucking shop and not even get stopped.
james_pic@reddit
It probably didn't help that people knew who he was. If a random homeless smack head comes into a shop and takes everything off the shelves, good luck finding them. A famous celeb does it, and they're much easier to find.
BobbyBoRegis@reddit
As someone who was part of the management team at the Tesco store AWT was caught in (a previous life for me, granted) - he stole a hell of a lot more than just a block of cheese. Firstly, by block - we’re talking Deli Counter blocks, not the ones you grab from the shelf. He also used to steal wine, salads, etc, and it went on for months. We weren’t allowed to stop him as our Regional Store Director was worried about press fallout (due to Richard Madeley’s incident).
He was an arrogant wanker whilst he was in there shopping, my most vivid memory was of him clearing the Reduced Shelves every Friday of bagged salads so that he could serve it up at his local pub/restaurant.
He wasn’t actually stopped by the store staff, either. Tesco’s Loss Prevention Team were there almost in their entirety for the day when they caught him, they’d actually started packing up to leave as he came in later than usual on this particular day.
loveswimmingpools@reddit
And Richard Maddeley!
joeChump@reddit
Well if he was badly mentally ill then it’s probably less that he was cancelled as such and more that people just stopped giving him work because a production is likely not going to be adaptable to that.
ohnoheforgotitagain@reddit
I think it's definitely more down to that and it may have been the thing that tipped the bookings in someone else's favour. We were bombarded with TV chefs around that time and there was always another one to put on if one if the jus was no longer worth the squeeze.
Anecdotally my Dad worked in the same industry (making dinners) and had been at social events with AWT, he was apparently deeply and infuriatingly boring.
Looking back he was decent and he'd have probably dealt with the shoplifting and mental illness bit much better in today's climate. Every chance he'd thrive now really. Good chef.
ConstantPurpose2419@reddit
Yeh I don’t think the term “cancelled” even existed back then. As I recall the tabloids were their usual horrific selves to him. He was publicly dragged for it certainly, whether that constitutes as “cancelled” in the current definition of the term idk.
joeChump@reddit
Yeah I suppose it would really.
Silly_Hurry_2795@reddit
And Richard madely (or maybe his wife)
SoulInTheCrowd@reddit
Winona was kleptomaniac, so she couldn't control her urge to steal. It's an impulse-control disorder, it's not premeditated, like you don't plan what, when and where you're going to steal. It just happens. As far as I remember, Antony was always stealing same items, cheese and wine, from Tesco. His explanation was his childhood trauma and "addiction to risk".
ConstantPurpose2419@reddit
What you’ve just described of AWT’s behaviour is also kleptomania.
BunchitaBonita@reddit
The same happened to Richard Madeley at some point.

Curiously, it's not mentioned, although we do get the more important info like "He was the first ever contestant to score a 100-point correct answer on Pointless during his appearance on Pointless Celebrities in 2013.^([)^(citation needed)^(]")
welshgirl0987@reddit
Well when Richard Madely did it it was all a big mistake, not multiple bottles of wine he just "forgot" to pay for.... Nobody will notice" Both kept their jobs.

rokstedy83@reddit
Just to ask ,what involvement? Someone drowned in his pool ,was he involved?
Astrohurricane1@reddit
He has steadfastly refused to co-operate with any investigation into the death, while maintaining that he’s willing to cooperate fully publicly and then refuses to cooperate when any further investigations occur.
rokstedy83@reddit
He has steadfastly refused to co-operate with any investigation into the death,
How do you know that if publicly he said he was cooperating?
Astrohurricane1@reddit
Because both the police and the family of the victim have said that he has refused to cooperate and answer their questions.
rokstedy83@reddit
Care to link the story where the police say he didn't cooperate? So far all I can find is Stuart's family said he didn't cooperate which is a bit biased really ,he also managed to sue for wrongful arrest as he was not seen as a suspect,I'm not saying he didn't do it but it doesn't really sound like what you're saying
Astrohurricane1@reddit
I do not have an article from nearly 20 years ago memorised, no. 🙄

grishnackh@reddit
at least a couple of people know, I'd wager.
but they sure as fuck aren't talking.
Aware_Hedgehog1835@reddit
Exactly and not only that Barrymore left the scene of the crime and refused to ask questions during the 2002 inquest.
Tuarangi@reddit
He also phoned his agent before the police.
That said, he was able to successfully argue in court he was wrongly arrested by the police as they didn't have sufficient grounds to believe he was the one who did it.
I suspect he didn't do it, there were a bunch of people at the party and one slipped out, killed the guy, chucked him in the pool and slipped back in but I do believe Barrymore and others know who it was and are covering.
Police really messed up by not securing the scene allowing the likely weapons (pool thermometer and/or door handle) to be removed and I got the impression they thought it was some coked up gay guy who drowned by accident and didn't do enough at the time to properly investigate until too late.
Extreme-Composer8452@reddit
Wasn't there also an hour between calling his agent and calling the police?
gary_the_merciless@reddit

BigBazook@reddit
He bummed a man to death
Swimming_Gas7611@reddit
He was never accused of that. He hosted the party. Someone died at a sex and drugs party, happens from time to time when you are doing class a drugs. I'm not downplaying that, but if it's a rock star in the us nothing would come from it, him being a gay national treasure (at the time) was what made the outrage so big.
Final-Implement-1936@reddit
It was a fair bit more than that, though, wasn't it?
He didn't exactly co-operate with the police, there was a strong suggestion that he hid the evidence, and then he left the country pretty sharpish.
He's been arrested twice on suspicion of murder. His then wife stated in court that Barrymore had lied about not being able to swim, and about rubbing cocaine on people's gums.
He isn't telling something.
skinnygrave@reddit
That's proper Roger Mellie stuff
Swimming_Gas7611@reddit
I'm not saying he's a saint. Just that lifestyle and untouchable kind of world people loved in the 80's and 90's died with the poor lad who died in his pool. I think he was trying to avoid being cancelled after almost being cancelled just for being gay.
Final-Implement-1936@reddit
But my point is - he WAS accused of murder and sexual assault. I seem to remember there were other allegations as well. He was done, or investigated, for hitting his ex wife too, I seem to recall.
The point is - it wasn't just that he hosted the party. He was personally implicated.
0xBorisjohnson@reddit
The person who died was sexually assaulted with a foreign object (that was then removed from the scene) and was by all the accounts of everyone who knew him 100% straight, and probably slightly homophobic, which may have been what led to the sexual assault. He was a random invited to the party from a nightclub, it wasn't really his scene or a normal kind of night for him. It might be an idea for you to read up on the case a little bit, because to say there was no malfeasance involved is not in keeping with the known facts of the case.
No one has ever been charged with the crime because everyone at the party kept quiet and without an actual witness statement there isn't enough evidence.
Feeling-Ad6796@reddit
The thing people don't understand another about barrymores 'party' is that the latter is inaccurate and pretty misleading term the media used. People think party and assume there were masses of people and so the events could easily have happened unnoticed.
This wasn't the case. There were only 9 of them in total there so not that many people at all and it makes it more likely that they all knew what happened.
Swimming_Gas7611@reddit
"Someone was guilty, we don't know who"
TheBeaverKing@reddit
Was he a gay national treasure when this all happened? From memory (I was young mind), I thought part of the big deal at the time was that he was outed as gay? He was married with a wife and kids, which is what caught people by surprise.
I could be thinking of two separate events though.
OkCaterpillar8941@reddit
Married. No kids. I just had a read of his biography on Wikipedia to remind me of the facts. It said in 1976 his own mum blackmailed him because of a gay relationship he had. He married a woman who became his manager who helped him become the star he was. It's a sad tale from the start with alcohol and drug abuse in the mix.
I always felt so sad for Stuart Lubbock's family. His Dad begged for someone to tell the truth for years.
BaBaFiCo@reddit
I was a kid at the time, but my recollection was he was gay but we didn't really talk about it. And so living a hedonistic lifestyle was beyond acceptability.
Swimming_Gas7611@reddit
Yeah I believe you might be right. I was fairly young at the time also. But my point being the homosexually was another stick to beat him with at the time(for want of a better term).

I'm 26 and had never heard of the guy before he popped up on my Tiktok. My sister in law is 25. She showed my wife a TikTok clip, as she worded it “of this old guy I follow that’s funny and talks about snacks” and sure enough it was Barrymore. Do you know much about the murder of Stuart Lubbock and Barrymore's actions immediately after the 'discovery' of his body and prior to the police arriving, or his behavior in the following months and years? There's something very wrong with the entire situation (beyond the terrible violence committed against Stuart) and there's something deeply troubling about him.
Maffers@reddit
I remember it being in the news at the time.
0xBorisjohnson@reddit
the tl;dr is Stuart Lubbock was drugged/spiked and sexually assaulted by most likely two or more of the party guests and then left for dead and Barrymore was extremely callous in the immediate aftermath, even if he himself was not directly involved.
hussain_madiq_small@reddit
He was at a orgy what reason would anyone have to spike him, like do you hear yourself.
0xBorisjohnson@reddit
He was a random that was invited back from a club by Barrymore, along with two other women. He was by all accounts a very normal bloke that worked at a meat factory. All the 'he died at a gay orgy' stuff is pretty homophobic and glosses over the actual crime, which is that he was violently sexually assaulted.
hussain_madiq_small@reddit
Wait so im homophobic for stating the fact he was at a gay orgy. Yet you arent for saying he couldn't have wanted to go to a gay orgy because he was "a very normal bloke"?
Be 100% honest here, if we lined up 100 men who have all just been to a drug fueled gay orgy and 1 of those people had actually just been raped. You are going to sit there and say with a straight face we could determine who that was? Like fuck off.
0xBorisjohnson@reddit
You are aware this 'drug fueled gay orgy' had a total of nine guests, two of which were women, and two of which lived in the house?
Obviously I don't have as much experience with gay orgies as you do, but when I imagine them, I usually imagine them to be better attended.
hussain_madiq_small@reddit
Right so completely abandon your argument and move to the definition of an orgy. Which is defined as just group sex of more than 5 people, which is the EXACT THING THAT HAPPENED.
Like how can you be so wrong about everything you say.
0xBorisjohnson@reddit
Reddit thread on the subject so you can dispel some of your willful ignorance if you feel so inclined.
hussain_madiq_small@reddit
"It's not entirely clear what happened after that"
So wait, all that text and for the actual event in question you have rumours and "it seems like" with no sources on anything.
Like what is in that page except multiple contradictions. Like we are going to pretend its coincidence that they met in a toilet. Is that what straight guys do? Meet gay guys in toilets and then go back to their place as the gay guy proceeds to tell everyone hes going to have sex.
Like it doesn't make sense.
"Having watched many videos and investigative documentaries about the horrific and untimely death of 31 year old Stuart Lubbock, it is my considered opinion that this man was murdered"
Oh wow its considered opinion guys, case closed.
0xBorisjohnson@reddit
The medical records are not 'rumours'.
hussain_madiq_small@reddit

Wobblycogs@reddit
I have to laugh at the crab bucket mentally of this. What Clarkson did was not in the spirit of the law but was completely legal at the time. He is not to blame, the politicians that wrote the law are. They screwed up drafting the law, no doubt knee of plenty of people avoiding inheritance tax using it, and face no consequences. Clarkson gets to take the fall for them. It's a crab bucket mentlity because you never hear about the generationally rich avoiding inheritance tax. You hear about Clarkson because people still see him as, some of, one of us.

Technically, this is not correct. He simply did not have his contract renewed as it happened to fall due at the end of the month when it all kicked off. The worst that can be said is that they withdrew his contract offer.
In the end, he did ok out of the whole situation and one might argue that as TG was already feeling tired by then, a few years of doing something different with Amazon was actually what he needed. Oh, and of course when they all refused to keep making the Grand Tour, Amazon offered each of them their own shows as a sweetener to keep making the specials. From there, we got the farm programme and I suspect he's making bucket loads more money from that than he ever did from driving cars...
SoSeriousAndDeep@reddit
No, his contract wasn't renewed.
He then went over to Amazon, got a massive pay rise and multiple series out of it. It's probably fair to say he faced basically no consequences whatsoever for his actions.

I'd be quite happy to seem him clear his name, I liked him.

We’ve got two ex Corrie actors living near us, neither have been in the show for many years now. Both are very skint and pay the rent via occasional panto runs and you’ll always hear them in pubs saying ‘my agent is getting me into the jungle this year’
Both say that while the tv money was good, after agents cut, taxes, living the high life and with no plan for work post tv fame the cash ran out very quickly after they were sacked. There must be a number of ex soap actors out there who are basically skint and waiting on a £1000 Pointless Celebrities appearance fee to roll in

As someone who interviewed the other band mates (I was a music journalist who wasn't important enough to be given time with Ian) they clearly looked at him like a colleague they barely spoke to outside of work. Some of them didn't seem to like him much and made little effort to hide it. I'm not pretending I knew them well, but I really didn't get the impression that he was someone they had a high enough opinion of that they would cover up for.
But in a lot of people's eyes there were now questions.
Sad-Nectarine-7855@reddit
There was an old interview that got resurfaced where his band mates more or less said Ian likes them young (i think the gost was someone asked a question and mentioned their age and they said that's for Ian)

Much of this will be retained earnings from prior activity. Celebrities tend to have complex financial affairs, partly to minimise tax, but also to (help) prevent them from spending it all, and as a way of safeguarding stuff if they ever get into legal trouble. So instead of getting £1m up front from a project, it will go into the company and be spread out over several years. Someone like Harris, with a long career, likely had a lot of stuff built up and invested that way, and it could pay him a salary long past his peak.

Broadcasters should do a “Where are they now?” to show the ramifications of such actions. I don’t know what these people did, I assume unethical rather than illegal, resulting in loss of opportunities, but it would be good to show what can happen when disgraceful from somebody with a public presence.
paulmclaughlin@reddit
If what they've done wasn't illegal, and they're not living in the public eye any more, then the broadcaster would probably have to show why there is a public interest in broadcasting it, and that the interest outweighs the subject's right to privacy.
If what they've done was illegal, and their conviction has been spent in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, then it would be actionable as defamation and the broadcaster could have to prove their justification in court, which carries financial risk.

No_Neighborhood_134@reddit
He also founded Hat Trick Productions, which make a lot of British comedy panel shows (most importantly, Have I Got News For You), so I imagine he's done quite well out of that.
EDIT: By 'he' I meant Rory McGrath, not JLC.

He excited Hat Trick Before they took off and missed out on the windfall
hdhxuxufxufufiffif@reddit
Not exited - he was sacked, and supposedly very bitter about it.
daern2@reddit
It killed Chelmsford 123 (still the funniest sitcom ever made, IMHO) as it was co-written by McGrath and Jimmy Mulville who still runs Hat Trick today. Unfortunately, it was collateral damage from the fallout.
Interestingly, they came back together recently to produce an audio remake of it, so perhaps things are not as frosty as once they were.
And for those with long memories, they might also remember that one Chris Langham was also in an episode, playing a rather idiotic roman guard...
SkyPilotOne@reddit
You just triggered a memory: Chris Langham is also a Roman guard in Life of Brian.
daern2@reddit
Haha, I'd completely forgotten about that! I know a bad 'un is a bad 'un, but as a comedic actor, he really was excellent in his day.
SkyPilotOne@reddit
I had forgotten as well and even had to check imdb to see if I was misremembering.
That_Buddy_2928@reddit
Yeah surely McGrath is still doing just fine being a cofounder of Hat Trick.
TheMonkeyInCharge@reddit
He’s also been a prolific writer for decades, so must be okay with royalties. He’s been around so long he used to knock about with Peter Cook.
neilm1000@reddit
He's friends with Ralph McTell as well so he's definitely long in the tooth.
TheMonkeyInCharge@reddit
Hell it must be 20 years since the infamous B3ta story: Rory was at some gala, putting on his best sober face. Cook was late, and battered, eventually rolling in looking a state and carrying a corner-shop carrier bag. 'Rory! RORY!' he bellowed across the room, holding up the bag. 'This porn you gave me is RUBBISH!' 'It's all people passing and shitting!'
neilm1000@reddit
Peter Cook really was excellent. McGrath found out he was dead when he didn't give him an abusive phone call when Spurs had beat Arsenal.

Justin Lee Collins has largely left the entertainment industry but has been occasionally linked to some obscure roles on live TV shows probably as some kind of off camera role or consultant.
He was worth about £5 million at his peak so he is also likely just quietly living off that.
Also, i'm not saying it's right, but JLC's conviction was pretty tame compared to the controversies of a lot of other British celebrities in recent years and he hasn't reoffended since as far as I am aware.
deadstarxxx@reddit
Yea i forgot what his allegations were, its wild that now theres "cancelled" stars who carry on doing their thing and it feels like Jlc hasnt offended to that level. I think the barometer for cancelling seems to have heightened over the last 10 years.
boojes@reddit
Just a reminder of since of the things he did:
Made his gf write details of every sexual encounter she'd ever had.
Threw aways DVDs showing actors she found attractive.
Made her close her social media and email.
"grabbed his partner's hair, pulled her to the floor, pinned her down and spat in her face."
Told her she could only look at inanimate objects, and not any men.
Made her sleep facing him and said if she fell asleep before him then it was her fault if he texted other women.

I know someone that has written some successful TV shows, he didn’t used to earn at his current level before streaming. Since streaming services became popular his income has rocketed to anywhere from £500k-£1m per year. This will continue until his shows are either no longer popular or are removed. So I’m guessing this could be a thing for some unless their shows have been removed from streaming services.
meestah_meelah@reddit
I would have thought he would earn less on streaming platforms?
AliBelle1@reddit
Most shows don't really get rerun on TV very often, and less so internationally. I also can't imagine the home media sales are very high either. I can definitely see a load more people watching a show via streaming than any other source of royalties.
WingingItSince87@reddit
This is the reason.
Not_That_Magical@reddit

Feeling-Ad6796@reddit
Well yes you are right. People who worked in the public eye(celebrities) can remain in the industry but move into less public facing roles. Take sue tully ( michelle fowler from eastenders), she left acting after eastenders and went into directing.
The actor who played nat Simpson in brookside too went into writing ( or something like that) in tv after he left brookside and was working in corrie I believe. The actor who played Natalie Barnes son( he owned the garage, actor lee warburton) in corrie who did loads of tv work in other roles moved into that kind of work too I believe. And was working in shameless.
Or the female singer from aqua has become a professional song writer and makes good royalties off that. She wrote sound of the underground by girls aloud.

Tv (or other celebrity careers) are very fickle. Even if you do nothing dodgy, your career could dry up at any point. As such people invest the money to create a second (sometimes more major) income stream.
If you have the capital, then it can take relatively little work to buy property & rent it out for example. A lot of former celebrities end up owning pubs.
ArmWildFrill@reddit

FantasticWait7109@reddit
I think they get their money a number of ways.
Chefs like Greg Wallace and Anthony Worrall Thompson probably still get royalties from book sales, although probably not as much since their downfall. Plus things like Cameo... people will still buy messages from them. Sometimes even repeat fees from past shows, which depending on their downfall may still be rebroadcast on some of the channels that always show repeats!
Probably have savings etc. if they had good financial advisors during the height of their fame.
The older personalities are probably close to retirement age anyway, and probably have pensions.
Some change careers. After the controversy with John Leslie (for which he was cleared) in early 2000s, he now has a successful career in property. Kind of good that (unlike some others) he's been able to move on past his fame.

They retire.
Whilst they are popular, these people can quickly make £1m - £10m in income.
Once they've bought a modest house, car, paid off the tax man, etc, they could find themselves with a savings pot of half a million to £5million.
With the right sort of investment, they could live off the interest of £50k - £500k for the rest of their lives.
Take someone like Huw Edwards, who was on £500,000 per year at the BBC. Let's say he kept £100k, gave £100k to the Tax man, and banked £300k. After 10 years he'd have £3m in savings. At a 5% return, he'd be living very comfortably. And he was a d-lister newsreader.

I don't think there are many people presenting a TV show who also have another job. They might present 6 shows a week, but usually if you're actively on a major channel presenting that's your only job. Like you won't find Evie from CBeebies pulling pints down at the White Hart.
foxhill_matt@reddit
Oh there aren't many presenters with other jobs - but there are lots of other people who are TV regulars that do. Although a good friend of mine, who has co-presented shows on Discovery, works in the Co-Op.
Pretty much every comedian you see on Mock The Week is temping or working in an office. A lot of 'famous for being famous' people either have to shill like crazy or just keep their head down in the office during the day.
So many actors are 'resting' between jobs by doing retail.
You only get paid for the time you spent doing it, when it appears on TV you've either got another gig or you're back on the dole.
This is why the Cheeky Girls now work at a Hyundai car showroom, Jon Tickle works for Centrica/British Gas, Marshall Lancaster is a plasterer and Carol Smilie is a celebrant

AWT ran the Greyhound pub/restaurant near Henley for 20 years until he sold up a couple of years ago. He still runs a restaurant in Kew I believe. Never met him but went to the Greyhound a few times. Staff were all great and the food excellent.
I think there is a huge difference between having a career and also being on telly, and having a TV career. Something to fall back on when BBC or ITV decide you are out of favour. Otherwise it's sideline projects like books (ghostwritten of course), being the 'face' of supermarket chains and personal appearances. Quite a lot of money in being an after dinner speaker if you are interesting enough.
If you are cancelled due to violence/abuse then you're probably stuffed. And rightly so.
