As a Brit, do you think you swear too often?

Has there ever been a moment that you regretted using bad language such as at work, school, or in front of kids?

IT consultant, so my customers are generally peers with similar or lower levels of technical understanding, and sometimes there's no way to describe something other than "shit". They will often need a bit of figuring out first, as there are always those who take professionalism a bit too seriously.

I used to swear in front of customers. I was working in a shop selling musical instruments and equipment. 90% of the customers were either the uppity, church going middle class type, parents with their kids or the laid back musician type. It was pretty easy to spot each type and if they were the last one, I’d just speak to them like a normal person rather than my “customer service persona”.

As a much older Brit, I never swear. My mother always said; "if you have to enter a swear word into the sentence, rather than the correct word, then you don't have a good enough grasp of the English language." When I hear swear words, which is quite often these days. I think how uneducated young people are these days.

When I was in my twenties a long time ago, I had an interview for the civil service. It was a much bigger deal than I had expected. I was sitting at the end of a long table with Colonel Somebody, Baroness Somebody-Else, and another posh twat at the other end. Having been the only applicant in the waiting room not immaculately dressed in a suit, I reckoned my chances were slim, so didn't take the questions particularly seriously. As I left the room, one of the three, leant towards me and said "A word in your ear, young man. One does not use the word 'bugger' in an interview".

I see swearing as a useful way to add colour, emotion and humour in language and have encouraged my daughter to use it the same way, since as long as she could understand that it was not too be used with grandparents or at school.  I don't mind the sex and body function / secretion swears being used, but we do have a strict rule with her that we mustn't use swears which are misogynistic, racist, homophobic etc. So the time I regret swearing is when I bellowed "Cunt!" at a driver who nearly rammed into the side of our car in its attempt to cut in on the motorway, and my 8yo daughter innocently asked from the back what a cunt was.

I remember watching Michael Palin’s Full Circle back in the 90s. I must’ve been about 12 or 13. In the episode where he visits Japan, he stays in this beautiful traditional inn. He sits for a traditional meal, in this gorgeous, immaculately clean, perfectly organised, minimalist room in near perfect silence. The first thing he does is knock over the sake. “Oh shit” he mutters to himself with such perfect timing that the camera crew burst out laughing. I learned at that moment that it is entirely appropriate to swear when the time is absolutely right. And the right time is when it is funniest.

I've cut down on my swearing since having a kid. But my kid's 4 now, and hears me swear sometimes. It's not the end of the world, I explain the context around it and why I swore etc. They don't really repeat it, and if they do it's just at home in front of me and the missus. I feel like trying to be too uptight about it is actually worse - that whole thing of, the more you try to stop them from doing something, the more they're going to want to do it. If I act all weird about swear words right now, they're gonna think it's funny and then go ham with it later. For now it's just "I said a swear word, because blah blah, here's why you shouldn't swear blah blah". Takes away from the appeal of swearing like a sailor.

Not "too" often, no. I can only imagine swearing too often means you're actually swearing so much that you're not even making any point. I avoid swearing in work because I'm trying to make a good impression with everybody - even those who don't like swearing. But generally speaking it's just more words and they aren't hurtful attacks, they have no malice behind them, they're perfectly fine to use as appropriate.

Yes. I never really noticed my use of language until 2 things happened: 1. My partner says she knew if she’d pissed me off based on the language I used. If I swore, it was my usual expression and I wasn’t genuinely annoyed or upset, like “fuck off.” If I said “leave me alone” she said alarm bells would ring. 2. One of my young children said to me the other day as I was bringing in the shopping, fucking he’ll look at the size of them apples. I told him who taught up that word, where did he hear it, and he looks sheepishly back at me and says you daddy.

I wouldn't say I try not to swear, but rather I just don't generally swear when I'm speaking, unless I'm out with friends, or paraphrasing or something. It's not how I'd normally speak in everyday situations like some people do. I'd swear if there's a purpose or a point, and sorry to say but I think people that excessively swear when there's no need are probably unsavoury sorts or have a lack of education, and maybe that makes me judgemental but honestly that's how I feel if someone is adding swear words to every sentence for no reason.
