What's the etiquette for the priority bus seats?

Posted by ScaryButt@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 228 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

It’s better not to sit there IMO as many people who might need the seat may not be comfortable to ask as they don’t know whether you need it or they’re worried about confrontation. If you do genuinely look to see if anyone needs it then that’s great, but obviously not all disabilities are visible.

Is it worth visiting Seaside towns this weekend? Something to Avoid or worth the inevitable chaos?

It depends whether you are bothered by places being really crowded. I actually don’t mind busy places so that wouldn’t put me off but my biggest concern would be traffic and parking so I’d probably go somewhere by train personally.

Do people lie about their weekend plans just to keep small talk going?

Posted by DealProper8414@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 154 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

It’s not hard for me to remember what I’ve just done a few days before... I wouldn’t lie and make something up but I also wouldn’t give a blow by blow if everything I did. Sometimes if I cba to chat for some reason then I just say ‘not much’ but even on a weekend where I haven’t had any social plans then I will have gone somewhere or done something that I can mention even if it was just watching a specific film or cooking something new for dinner.

Do middle-class British people secretly look down on those who rely entirely on the NHS?

Posted by Qoperator@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 38 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

No people are probably getting private care for stuff so they can avoid long waits. But I don’t see why that means they’d look down on people using the NHS. Most people still use the NHS and even people who use private for some things will use the NHS for other stuff e.g. in an emergency or see their GP etc.

What do British people think of bastard children?

Posted by Qoperator@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 57 comments

It’s common for parents to not be married before having kids. I don’t think anyone really thinks of the as bastards or has a negative image. Also don’t understand your point re LGBT either.

How long is your commute to work and back?

Posted by Puzzleheaded_Bet_618@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 246 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

Mine is similar around 45 min each way - either tube (with 20ish min of walking) or cycling. I go 2-3 times a week. I find the commute pretty typical for London and doesn’t really bother me personally.

Depends where you live and what your role is. I live in London and those are very normal salaries here for all kinds of different roles. But not for someone right at the start of their career obviously.

Why doesn’t the UK seem to have female butlers or ‘buff butler’ equivalents as a legitimate profession — is it cultural, legal, or just lack of demand?

Do you workout on holidays?

Posted by Akash_nu@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 119 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

Depends on the holiday and how much space I have in my bag for an extra pair of shoes but if I can bring running stuff I like to run. Then it’s part of the holiday too as you can explore and stop for a nice coffee and pastry after. I don’t usually stay in hotels and if I do then they’re normally small so no gym.

Bus drivers, do you like it when people thank you when getting off?

Posted by chi_minhs_hoe@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 210 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

I say thank you when I get on and lots of other people do that too. Or you can shout down the bus if it’s quiet but when it’s busy and lots of people are getting on and off at the same time then shouting to thank the bus driver feels a bit OTT as they are presumably more focused on the people getting on at that point.

Which is the best location in the UK?

Posted by Alien-Rebbit@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 13 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

London is the best single area IMO. There are so many safe places in the UK I have no idea which is best. And nature depends what you personally like but I’d definitely say best nature in UK is not in England... got to be Wales or Scotland (could also be NI but I’ve only visited Belfast so no idea)

How often do you speak to a friend to create lasting friendships?

Posted by Obvious_Armadillo_16@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 11 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

So it depends. Your example of maintaining friends after changing jobs, you just have to make the effort to contact them. I wouldn’t text or call regularly, but I’d check in occasionally and suggest meeting up. I feel like it only really works with people you would already see outside of work tbh. I maintain the friendship long term without seeing each other by just periodically checking in, it’s different from friendships where you are constantly in contact.

Cyclists, what are your "yeah im gonna walk this bit" roads?

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

I don’t think I’ve never done this because a road is too busy or lack of a bike lane, but I have done because a hill is too steep or when google maps decides to send me down a ‘shortcut’ which is actually pedestrian only.

How do people find WFH jobs?

Depends on your skills and experience really. Tbh any job that was entry level and not requiring any particular expertise etc that is fully remote would be incredibly competitive.

Is condensed hours only beneficial for those with kids?

Posted by Obvious_Armadillo_16@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 196 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

No I don’t think it’s just good for people with kids. Lots of people work 8-6 mon to Fri anyway. But I personally know I am less productive doing long days long term. It works for some people though. My Mum actually did it for a few years before she retired.  At my work we also have 35h weeks and it’s quite common for people to do half days on Fridays or every other Friday off. Then your days aren’t quite as long. I prefer having more flexibility to do longer/shorter days as needed than committing to compressed hours all the time. But it depends on how flexible your work is.

Do you think British politeness is real or just surface-level?

Posted by MonoDreams@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 93 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

Politeness and kindness are just different things… often the polite thing to do is not the kind thing to do. Genuine kindness can be uncomfortable and often politeness is about trying to keep everyone comfortable.

Why doesn't the UK have public minibuses?

Posted by gill_d@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 28 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

Not enough people wanting to take them I would guess… taking fewer people more often is going to be more expensive. Also in cities there are many normal buses that run more often than 15-20 minutes… especially somewhere like London and in smaller towns where buses are less frequent, people are more likely to drive and it’s hard to convince them to take a bus instead.

How many friends and acquaintances do you have in your life?

Posted by WoodpeckerWoodChuck@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 68 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

Fair enough. Then possibly my friends number is bigger e.g. former colleague I meet up with for a sport, my husband’s friend who I have sometimes see without my husband due to a shared interest.  I still think the idea of counting acquaintances is crazy as with your definition that is sooo many people unless someone lives a very isolated life.

How many friends and acquaintances do you have in your life?

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

What’s your definition of friend vs acquaintance as I feel like I couldn’t possibly count my acquaintances as that’s such a big number… isn’t that just anyone I know and am friendly with and might stop for a brief chat if I bumped into them? So would be a v large number but maybe you define an acquaintance differently. I would say I have 17 friends. Then there’s people who are between friends and acquaintances who I might make plans to meet occasionally like former colleagues I’m still friendly with but idk how to categorise those.

We moved in together after about 2y then bought a house and got married another 2y later. Did some renovations on the house and at that point there wasn’t really any reason not to as we knew we both wanted kids and were in our 30s and had the space and money etc. We had a few big trips we wanted to do so waited until after those to start trying so we’d been together I think 7y by the time I got pregnant.

I side with the other people you’re on holiday with as I can’t believe you’re arguing over this!  I think either approach is fine and it’s just personal preference, not something that can really be right or wrong.

You’re on a low salary and single. I don’t think many/anybody is affording a house, car and family in your situation. Many people get family help as well e.g. living rent free with their parents or given a lump sum for deposit to buy somewhere.

They should go single file and preferably with a bit of clearance before you get right in front of each other. I find people are v annoying with this and no idea why, but I’ve not noticed any particular sex, age etc who are better/worse. Obviously people super engrossed in conversation might not notice.

Is it healthy to ask your partner what they would change about you?

Posted by Pythagorarse@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 23 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

I don’t think it’s a healthy question to ask in general, but I think that you should tell him how you feel about his tidiness as it’s important to discuss and resolve these issues so you don’t build up resentment. You can then also ask if there’s any of your behaviour that he feels is impacting him negatively - but I think the general question about what would you change is risky as what if the answer is about something you can’t change or something centra to who you are, rather than a changeable behaviour that is reasonable to be upset about when living together (which is what yours is)

Be honest, how often for you and your partner argue?

Posted by PaddedValls@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1024 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

We don’t really argue but we do disagree on things and bicker sometimes. I don’t think arguments are necessarily a bad sign though, tbh often it’s healthier if you are airing any issues out rather than sitting on them, but it depends how the arguments go as name calling and insults etc are crossing a line IMO and I wouldn’t put up with that in my relationship. I think also if you keep arguing about the same thing and not resolving it then it’s a bad sign.

I just find her entertaining but I don’t take her seriously and I also like that she doesn’t take herself seriously either. She is obviously attention seeking drama queen type and she probably is a bit like that in real life but it’s an exaggerated character. She is nothing like me or anyone I’m friends with in real life but I just find her funny.

Is it weird to still be living at home at 40?

Posted by Even-Wasabi7183@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 168 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

On the face of it, yes. Especially if the only reason you haven’t moved out is ‘not wanting to pay someone else’s mortgage’ you’re paying for a place to live, not for someone else’s mortgage. And if you haven’t been contributing to your parent’s housing costs, why haven’t you saved enough to move out yet? When will that ever happen or will you still be living with them in 20 years time? At some point I think as an adult you need to break free and become more independent.  I think there are obviously loads of situations where the above might not apply. E.g. you move out and then move home due to a change in circumstances, you’re living at home to be a carer for a parent, you are saving and have a realistic plan for moving out but just haven’t reached it yet.

Why does it feel so much harder to make friends in my 30s?

Posted by DotCreative3378@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 46 comments

Real-Apricot-7889@reddit

Honestly, it gets harder to make friends as you get older. I think it’s much better to invest more effort in your existing friendships which you admit you have difficulty with (maintaining contact). Try to meet new people too but if you don’t work on the effort you put into friendships then in a few years the new friends will become people you’ve lost touch with/don’t see much too

Children learn to run before they learn about road safety. The reins are probably easier to manage while also out with a dog than trying to keep hold of your toddlers hand. I don’t think they’re used much anymore though, can’t think of the last time I saw them.
