How long is your commute to work and back?

When I have in-office days, it takes 1 hour 30 minutes on a normal day (about 45-50 minutes each way more or less). That’s travelling from the suburbs into the city and back on one bus.
If you work from home but have to go into the office occasionally, it’ll still be intriguing to know.
LowAnimator8770@reddit
3 days a week 15 min on bike, 2 days 30 sec walk
LouisaB75@reddit
Used to be just over an hour by train.
Now it is however long it takes me to navigate my way round needy cats to get up the stairs to my desk in the bedroom without spilling my cuppa.
gaspoweredcat@reddit
less than 10 mins, its like 800m away
MystaFx@reddit
10 mins to office. 10 secs at home from bed to logon.
Stinkinhippy@reddit
60-90 minutes each way depending on if i risk my life on the m5.
Helpful_Western7298@reddit
1 hour each way. Im actively looking for jobs nearer to home though.
LemmysCodPiece@reddit
About 5 minutes. It is across the road.
CockWombler666@reddit
Not set foot in the company office for over 6years now
omara500@reddit
I’ve noticed the Americans have a different attitude to commuting, but is this true?
Independent-Code8621@reddit
I work in the office 2-3 days a week and drive an hour each way.
Can be longer if there’s an accident on the motorway, but it’s worth it to have a good job and live somewhere of my choosing. I also quite like the commuting time as it gives me some headspace to decompress before family time.
KrungThepMahaNK@reddit
2-minute walk
ThatPrettyPrincesss@reddit
about an hour each way
Jezbod@reddit
If I’m in the office, depends on the tractor count!
It’s a rural road from my market town to the market town I work in, usually about 10 minutes on a good day.
Acceptable-Creme-184@reddit
I work in a national role which requires travel to London 3 or 4 times a month (I live in Yorkshire). That takes 4ish hours, train from home to main station then to London and then the underground to hotel.
I usually play Football Manager or watch films on the train (if I have managed to get work stuff done) 😅.
Other than that I work from home.
I like my commute, with kids at home it's rare to get me time.
utterlyforked@reddit
3 hours each way.
I'm a TWAT
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
AloeJake@reddit
Out of curiosity what do you do and earn if you don't mind me asking? You're a better person than me I couldn't hack a 3 hour commute each way!
utterlyforked@reddit
VP Engineering for a large software company. I earn enough to make the commute worthwhile.
hubble2bubble@reddit
No amount of money is worth 6 hrs of your day commuting sorry
MixAway@reddit
Wow. What are you travelling times if it’s three hours each way?!
Familiar9709@reddit
10min cycle
xycm2012@reddit
25 minute cycle.
FraggleGoddess@reddit
A 10 minute drive. Once I'm there, it's maybe 15 minutes walk to get from the car to my office.
Thalamic_Cub@reddit
Around 2hrs a day driving (45mins each way on paper but never manage it)
Its weirdly less exhausting than my previous commute of similar length by train.
Alert_Mine7067@reddit
I start work at 8 and finish at 4, my commute is 3 miles and I drive, for the morning
5 minutes if I leave at 07:45
10 minutes if I leave the house at 07:50
If I leave at any point at after 07:50 it's at least 20 - 25 minutes
Coming home if I leave at 4, I'm home in 15 minutes, if I finish at 5, then it's roughly half an hour.
yourefunny@reddit
20 to 30 mins depending if I am doing the school run as it's in the opposite direction to work. A bit of country roads, short section of high street and then dual carriageway way through nice scenery. Perfectly fine. Audio book or radio on and it zips past. 5-7 days a week.
missgraceangel@reddit
60 mile round trip half of that is m1 about 45-50 each way
garryblendenning@reddit
2 hours twice a week each way. 2 seconds 3 times per week.
Averages out about 48 mins per journey, per day. Less than I commuted pre covid
Immediate-Escalator@reddit
When I go to the office about 10-15 mins in the car or 20-25 mins by bike.
sugarrayrob@reddit
I've just switched from doing 3 days a week in the office, with a 4 hour round trip. To 1 day in the office with a ~50 minute round trip.
Getting 11 hours a week back has been unbelievably good for my mental health.
raged_norm@reddit
45 minutes one way
Racing_Fox@reddit
25 minutes each way it’s bliss
Used to commute an hour and half each way Bristol to Reading. That was fucking rough
N7twitch@reddit
An hour each way 😒 it’s an 80 mile round trip
Swimming-Lie5369@reddit
I'm an hour each way, and it's 80 miles each way!
Nice_Back_9977@reddit
It takes me about that long for a 25 mile round trip. It’s very depressing!
CurvePuzzleheaded361@reddit
30 minute walk or 10 minute drive
Ok_Art_6241@reddit
Work from home most of the time but if I’m in the office, it’s an hour and a half easily each way. Which is why I WFH!
JaxxonStylah@reddit
15 minute drive in. 15 minute drive back
Bossman_Mike@reddit
Allow 20 minutes in the car, if you go outside of rush hour it's often less.
Mckipper1@reddit
London based, on in office days, its 75 minutes each way on the tube.
SpectreSingh89@reddit
No more than 30 mins but I work off peak times.
Beneficial-Pitch-430@reddit
1hr in the morning, 1hr 30 at night
MixAway@reddit
I cycle in around 17 minutes each way.
Mikey463@reddit
It was 1 hour and now 10 minute walk. Next year we will be moving and it will be back to 1 hour maybe more.
randomguuid@reddit
About 10 seconds maybe, I walk from my bedroom to my office in the next room.
Vetni@reddit
Lucky! I have to walk all the way downstairs to my office...
Effective_Crazy6307@reddit
But then if you need anything, you don't need to walk downstairs to get it
Vetni@reddit
It's actually further to my kitchen than it is to get upstairs
ThrowRAWhitebeach@reddit
An hour each way.
aries_163@reddit
20 min drive through the Rutland countryside backroads, even on a dull day I love the scenery. On a sunny day I love my commute!
terryturbojr@reddit
1 hr 25 each way three days a week
Bearable but in hindsight wouldn't do it again if given the chance
sjw_7@reddit
Less than 5 seconds to walk from my sofa to the office in the next room.
Before Covid I used to commute two to three hours each way Tues-Thurs. I have no intention of ever going back to that unless I can help it.
liseusester@reddit
7 minute walk each way.
luala@reddit
Absolutely blessed to work remote, but do fortnightly travel which can be intense (Devon to York for 2 days, for example). We do a bit of a trek to take the kid to school, but now we got an e-bike it’s about 30 minutes round trip.
limitedregrett@reddit
2.5 each way 🤦♂️😵💫
HumanCStand@reddit
Usually about an hour in the morning and 1:20-1:45 in the evening
gangus_chan@reddit
40 miles. Usually an hour each way but can take 2.5 in rush hour if there's an accident. Luckily I'm typically only on 2-3 days a week.
I actually don't mind it though. I have 2 kids at home and it's the only chance I get to listen to my own music, podcasts etc. Also if it's been a not great day I've had time to process it before I get home.
anonoaw@reddit
Depends on traffic. Anywhere between 1 hour and 1.5 hour each way. I only go in 2 days a week.
07ufarooq@reddit
I go into the office 2x week. But if anything pops up we can work from home which nobody asks questions about. Probably take 30/40 mins each way depending on when I set off
hoopheid@reddit
Only go into the office twice a week. It’s only an 8 minute train journey but it’s about a 15 minute walk to the station.
oneyeetyguy@reddit
26 mins in the morning (by car). Anywhere from 40mins-1.5hrs of an evening.
melanie110@reddit
When I go in the office twice a week, it’s a 6 minute drive or an hours walk.
QueefInMyKisser@reddit
Ten minute drive, I’m pretty lucky
Despite being allowed to work at home a few days a week I pretty much never do unless I actually have to wait in for something
Smeeble09@reddit
Used to be an hour each way, now it's a single flight of stairs as WFH.
When I go to the office it's around five hours travel.
Nick6819@reddit
Usually a 35-45 minute drive to go 13 miles.
ACatCalledMorty@reddit
I don't work from home but I live so close I can walk there in under a minute.
Capable_Tip7815@reddit
50 mins in and 50-60 mins home.
Normally I go via the gym on the way to work which makes it more bearable.
Driving i might add.
here-but-not-present@reddit
About an hour and a half each way. Car, ferry, bus (or other car), walk - then the same in reverse in the evening. I much prefer WFH days!
highrouleur@reddit
Currently a 3 minute walk. Used to be 30 minute drive in the morning and 45-60 home. Changing site was the best thing I ever did
Disastrous-Fennel918@reddit
10 mins walk in, 2 mins lift home.
Rorydinho@reddit
If going into the office 30 mins walk or 5 mins on Elizabeth Line and 5 mins walk.
WinkyNurdo@reddit
Five, maybe six seconds.
limboxd@reddit
10-12min drive traffic dependant. or 5s when I WFH
emotionalprawn@reddit
I used to have a job in London where I'd go to 3 days a week and it would take an hour each way by train.
Just started a new job last month. Now only have 2 days a week in office and only 15-20 minutes drive each way.
TRFKTA@reddit
When I’m working from my usual place of work: 0 minutes (WFH ftw).
When I have to go into the office (1 day a week): 35-40 mins each way.
professorgenkii@reddit
2 hours each way, 4 hours total to my secondment location.
50 mins to 1 hour each way, so up to 2 hours for my usual office location.
I can put up with the commute for the career advancement and I only need to be there 1-2 days a week so it’s not too bad.
MonkeyBoy697@reddit
15mins each way right now as it’s warming up and the weather is better and that’s walking, in the Autumn & Winter when the weather is shit it takes 30mins each way and that’s driving due to the traffic being fucking appalling
Technically I can drive to and from work in 20mins each way but it actually means instead of driving 1.5 miles each way, I drive 5 miles on a scenic route to avoid the traffic so it’s a toss up between getting there 10mins slower but less miles on the car, less petrol used, or taking a route that is 10mins faster, uses more petrol and is an extra 7 miles per day
sihasihasi@reddit
One day a week. 1hr in (early in the morning) 1 ½hr home.
Jv01@reddit
35 minute walk each way Gets approx 7000 steps in which is good
HawkTenRose@reddit
Fifteen min walk, about 30-35 on bus and then 30 minutes walk on the other side. Total 1 hour 20 ish minutes but due to buses frequency, I leave two hours early. Would probably take me about 40-45 if I drove but I don’t.
Appropriate_Log1654@reddit
15 minutes
Complex_Box_7254@reddit
15 minutes in the morning. I start at half 7 so traffic is quite. 20-25 minutes home. Commute on a 125cc moped.
Adorable_Click_7071@reddit
1 hr on the train
NorthernblokeUK@reddit
Very luckily I live 5 mins from work. I nip home at lunchtime which is nice.
themysterytapir@reddit
Me too, I get an hour for lunch so go back and chill with my dog for 50 minutes.
iElvendork@reddit
About 35 minutes in total one way which isn't bad considering that's 2*10 min walks and a 15 minute train (plus I'm a slow walker so it would take others less!)
JMPappjam@reddit
6 minute drive. Should really walk
129sapphires@reddit
My in-office days are 3 x a week. One way is 1 hour and 15-25 minutes. Therefore in-office commute time in a day is up to 3 hours. Therefore 9 hours a week. Absolutely exhausted when the 3 days in-office are done!
VioletDime@reddit
1hr 50 mins each way. I go in twice a week.
RealMrIncredible@reddit
45 minute drive each way. 56 miles total. I'm planning on leaving as soon as a better job comes along.
medlilove@reddit
Hour 15 more or less
AnAncientOne@reddit
About an hr each way, mostly bus so pretty easy and cheap
Real-Apricot-7889@reddit
Mine is similar around 45 min each way - either tube (with 20ish min of walking) or cycling. I go 2-3 times a week. I find the commute pretty typical for London and doesn’t really bother me personally.
lookhereisay@reddit
25 min walk, 5 min wait at station, 50 min train, 7 min walk.
RaisinHorror1440@reddit
Four minutes by car.
Maleficent-Win-6520@reddit
Hour and a half. Only have to do it one day a week though
gprudhoe@reddit
Average? 7 mins
With traffic? 15-20 if I get on the dual carriageway before I realise, 10 mins if I don’t and go the detour
K1mTy3@reddit
Typically 35-40 minutes in the car, getting to the park & ride.
Then either a 25 minute walk from car to locker, or hop on the bus if it's there for a 5 minute ride to the other side of the hospital - and a 7 minute walk through the hospital. (I refuse to wait for the bus any more, last time I waited 25 minutes for a bus that was supposed to run every 10 minutes!)
I always walk back to the car, it gives me space to clear my head after a day in the lab.
ArchonBeast@reddit
0.0000048313744 light seconds, roughly.
Objective_Result2530@reddit
An hour and a half ish (15 minute each end walk, one hour train). But I go in max once a fortnight and wfh the rest
midnightbandit-@reddit
2 minute walk each way. It's sweet
hiddenemi@reddit
2 hours each way. Just kill me
terryjuicelawson@reddit
I used to take two buses which I left at least an hour, and sometimes took 1.5 hours to get home on a very bad day. Cycling got this down to around 40 minutes. Now work from home - 30 seconds.
thenewguy22@reddit
1hr 15-20 each way
UniquePotato@reddit
25 minutes there, an hour back thanks to traffic.
AlwaysTheKop@reddit
Takes about an hour on the bus (2 buses) if you include being on the bus and waiting for the buses.
insertitherenow@reddit
5 mins if I’m in the office and 20 secs if I’m at home.
hallerz87@reddit
30 minute drive each way
herefortheworst@reddit
10 minute cycle to train station. 25 minute train into town. Then I walk/continue cycling (folding bike) or get the tube. I rarely work at the same place for more than 3 days.
RonSwaffle@reddit
About 45 minutes.
~10 minute walk to the metro station (Tyne and Wear) near home, ~25 mins on the metro, then another ~10 mins walk on the other side.
I don’t mind it, personally, though I can work from home when possible so rarely do it 5 days a week. The metro journey is usually my email/admin time, which I appreciate.
Conscious-Ball8373@reddit
It depends. If I work in the lounge then it's about fifteen yards. If I work in the study, it's more like 20.
If I have to go to the office, which very very occasionally I do, it's about twelve minutes on a bus.
I haven't had a salary raise for a long, long time. I think they know I'm not going to give this up in a hurry.
Error_user_Error_@reddit
7 mins on a good day...12 mins if the roads are busy!
chronicbint@reddit
If I drive, 15 minutes if its busy. 40 if I walk. 15 if I cycle.

1.20 hr drive then either a 25 min walk or 15 min bus ride (park and ride)
Only once a week though

10 min drive. I live in a small town and work on an industrial estate just outside our nearest 'big' town.

Jasboh@reddit
20 mins cycle, 35 mins by train or 30 mins by car.

sillwuka@reddit
I live 6 miles from work which in in Manchester City centre, 1 hour round trip by car.
yabyum@reddit
5 hours on a Monday and Thursday. 20 mins once I’m there. 20 seconds on a Friday.

Sofa>kitchen table. Prior to this I was doing 4 hours a day (2 each way) after an office move fucked me.
Pixiebel81@reddit
Public transport, around/sightly over an hour going and closer to an hour and a half coming home
Angery_Lamb@reddit
3-4 hours... each way. Thankfully this is only once every 2-3 weeks when I decide to go into the office. Otherwise it's 10 seconds to the desk in the spare room.
rumbugger@reddit
Just under 5 hours for return journey to the office. Fortunately I only have to do this once a week.
Liquidfoxx22@reddit
3.5-4 each way, luckily only once a quarter. The rest of the time it's about 10s. from bed to desk.
colin_staples@reddit
~25 minute drive each way, but can be disrupted by traffic sometimes
Fortunately I only do 2 days in the office and 3 days WFH

About 20mins in a morning and around an hour getting home as I hit rush hour traffic entering the town I live in

7ish minutes if I take it steady

South London to north/central. If I include walking, it’s an hour both ways.

Longshot318@reddit
Anywhere between an an hour and 90 minutes each way from Surrey to London. I was doing this every day for 20 plus years but am now only in town 3 days per week.
Aberry9036@reddit
I did the same thing from Ockley to Tower Bridge at the start of my career - I only lasted two years at it before coming to the conclusion that life is far too short for that horrid nonsense, and instead found local jobs in Surrey and then Brighton. Zero regrets.
Longshot318@reddit

Immediate-Chest-606@reddit
Round commute anywhere from 30 - 55 min drive. On average about 50 mins.
badger906@reddit
Hour and 20 minutes each way. If people stopped taking their fat lazy children to school by car (there’s 4 large villages and one big secondary school with amazing bus services) and made them walk/cycle/bus, it’s about 30-40 mins. Rest is just traffic. One lay-by that blocks the road as parents try and do a U turn. It grind the town to a halt in all directions. Summer holidays are lovely.
It’s actually faster for me to cycle the 17 miles than it is to drive.
LoudComplex0692@reddit
You think the children should have to walk or cycle but you don’t? You’re not in traffic, you are traffic.
nancy-p@reddit
but if the traffic disappears in the summer holidays then the traffic is clearly primarily school journeys
do you actually think a 40 minute drive to work is the same as a 15 minute walk to school?
badger906@reddit
The villages are 1 and 2 miles away from the school. Yeah why shouldn’t they walk or get the FREE bus? I do cycle 17 miles each way quite frequently. But unsure about you, but cycling 170 miles a week to work and then spending 45 hours on your feet a week, isn’t exactly in the scope of most folk!
badreligionlover@reddit
2 minute drive to my main office. Brilliant if you forget anything!
However I have other sites which are 50 miles, 80 miles, 120 miles, 180 miles or 250miles respectively. Those are less fun.

One is an hour drive in, hour and bit back One is 40m in, 40 out One is 45 mins drive, 30min tube. Similar back.
Then it's a 12 hour shift in-between.
Lesson here? Stay in school and study like fuck
rosemaryorchard@reddit
About an hour and 10 each way, but it's once every 3 weeks and I usually use it as an excuse to stop by somewhere like IKEA/a giant Tesco on the way home which makes the trip a bit longer but means I don't have to go out of my way for that on another day.
sakmentoloki@reddit
10/15 mins if working in my office. But I frequently travel for work all around Europe so travel on then days can be alot longer naturally.
guerrios45@reddit
30 to 35 mins each way on a motorcycle in London.
45 when dropping my wife at her work on the way.
The mad thing is that it's cheaper & faster to commute on a motorcycle (taking into account gas, insurance & parking) than taking public transportation...
kushpvo@reddit
25 mins on cycle one way, 45 mins (includes 10 min walk and 1 change) on public transport, one way.

Unhappy_Clue701@reddit
Hour and a quarter each way. Luckily only a couple of times a week though. I motorbike it because although the train is more or less the same time, it’s £40 a day on the train versus about a tenner’s worth of fuel and maybe a pound or two more in general running costs.
WheresMyFlamingo@reddit
Yeah. Filling up my tank is £50 quid which gets me 6 trips to and from work train ticket including the tube is £45!

I have to drop my kid at nursery on the way, which adds some time, so typically 10-12 minutes.
ClericalRogue@reddit
15 minutes drive without traffic. 40 minutes at rush hour. To walk, about an hour.
TheeMetrologist@reddit
3 minutes by car, 15-20 on foot.
questionskiddo@reddit
1hr 10 in the morning and 1hr 30 in the evening. So basically almost three hours every day lol.
LoudCar7846@reddit
Door to door 1 hour 15 min (choice of bus, or bus and tram), one side of London to another.
merkus87@reddit
60-90 mins depending on traffic. 17 mins to get back.
MissJustine@reddit
I have recently moved right next to the office. Four minute walk max, that's if the street is busy to cross. Life changing if you can afford it...
Internal_Lion_1836@reddit
1hr, 30miles one way down the m4
Who_Knows_M3@reddit
15 min no traffic to 45 min bad traffic
YouSayWotNow@reddit
My previous job was 1 hr 20 each way on a good day but often a lot longer. It involved both the Tube and then a train and one or both were so often delayed.
Now my job is maybe 30-45 minutes drive (depending on time) but I can work from home a few days a week.
duvagin@reddit
15 to 20 minute walk each way
GainsAndPastries@reddit
20 minutes driving there and 20 minutes driving back.
I basically have a hard cap of 30 minutes, any further out than that then i wont take the job, not worth the fuel, sitting in traffic etc.
Funky-Melon@reddit
Roughly ~1.5h drive each way so around 3h. Used to do it 3 days a week but I'm only onsite 1 day a week now.
EvilTaffyapple@reddit
It’s 40 minutes door-to-door, which includes me stopping off to grab a coffee on my way in.
thorn312@reddit
I work from home now but in other jobs it's varied between an hour and a half each way, 45 mins to 15.
kellymacc@reddit
Down the stairs.
tiny-brit@reddit
I go to the office once a week - 2 minute walk, 20 minute bus, 10 minute walk.
I used to live further away AND go to the office every day, involving a 10 minute bus, 30 minute train, 15 minute walk, not including waiting times. Could never do that again.
Fancy-Knowledge683@reddit
When I used to commute into Bristol city centre, I typically used to leave the house at 6:30am and arrive in the office at slightly before 8am (25-minute train into the city centre with a 30-minute drive to the station on a good run, and I like to leave plenty of time to allow for the sometimes terrible rush hour traffic from my location so often wait at the station for a while), so I would hazard a guess at around 1.5 hours each way.
I’m soon going to be starting another job in Bristol that is a bit further to walk from Temple Meads, so the commute there will be perhaps closer to 1h 45m-2 hours each way all in.
I attended the office 2 days a week in my old job. My new job advertises a 3-day requirement, but my team are apparently “flexible“ on this, so I don’t know whether I’ll necessarily end up doing it in practice. I quite liked attending the office, but I got up at 5:15am to do so, so I think I would have been exhausted doing it every day!
djwillis1121@reddit
20-25 minutes each way
Budget-Economist-364@reddit
Anywhere between 25 mins and 1:45 depending on if the roads are cooked. I think if you had to average it out over a year it would be like 50 mins. It’s annoying because as the crow flies I’m only 10 mins away, but I have to cross a river with a shockingly small amount of bridges across it, then an extremely busy motorway junction
macjihad@reddit
15 minute walk
CosyColouringBooks@reddit
20 minute walk or 5 minutes if I drive
OddPerspective9833@reddit
About 25 min each way
better-out-there@reddit
When I first joined the company, they advertised a fully-remote position, so I went for it. About a year or so later came the inevitable "Hybrid" enforcement. Turns out it took me just under 3 hours each way.
Fought it, so now it takes me about 10 seconds from the lounge to the office-room.
Fit_Afternoon4604@reddit
40-45 mins (ish) but I work 8-4 to avoid the worst of the traffic
ThrillingFig@reddit
About 2 hours 40. I get two buses and have a 15 minute walk.
Ynoxz@reddit
If I get a bus to the train station then about 70 minutes. If I walk, 90.
Not ideal but I’m used to it now and only go in a couple of days a week.
Doesitmatters369@reddit
90 mins door to door but only once per week to the office
Czubeczek@reddit
15 minutes on pushbike
takingphotosmakingdo@reddit
About 30 steps, but mainly because I'm unemployed looking for work and nobody is hiring.
Numerous_Green4962@reddit
A little over an hour and a half in the morning (setting off before 5) and about two and a quarter on the way back. (94 miles mostly motorway)
coastalkid92@reddit
About an hour on the train and then maybe 15 minutes on the tube followed by a 2 minute walk.
Chris_Willman@reddit
I've just got the tape measure out and it's around 30ft - but thats from the kitchen inc coffee in hand to my desk. From my bed its double.
Jokes aside, i've been grateful to be very much remote based for the last 10 years but i work in events also so "commute"/ travel to london regularly enough and thats 1 1/2 - 2 hours total travel most times and i resent it!
alexlmlo@reddit
School run then work, 15 mins then 30 mins. Only once a week for going into office though.
MiddleAgedDread123@reddit
About 40min door to door - can walk or get the bus. Bus is slightly quicker but not always depending on how long I have to wait for one.
TWOITC@reddit
20 minute walk
