Is it weird to still be living at home at 40?

Going to throw a curveball in here as some of the replies so far are a bit weird in themselves to be honest. Firstly consider that in large parts of England, particularly in the South, it is near impossible to get a mortgage as a single earner. Secondly consider that 40 is now well within the timeline of people who were looking like getting decent GCSEs being coerced by their high school to get "an degree" ("any old degree, at any university, doesn't matter if you're interested in the subject or particularly like the university, you're set to get good GCSEs so you need to go to university and get a degree). Many such people were stuck with a degree they didn't really want nor need, that didn't give them many job options. I worked in pubs in my 20s (having got a degree in a subject I was interested in - music business, now work in the music industry and it was utterly pointless, never even mentioned I've got it) and loads of people I know were in the same boat. So when someone said "you've had 20 years" you often haven't really. 15 at a push. Pretty much the only people I know who got a mortgage without inheritance or substantial help from their parents work in a trade, and did so since they left school at 16. I get the renting argument - yes with a decent enough income you could rent, but then you're in a trap and can *never* afford a mortgage, let alone save for retirement. All well and good pointing out it's bad to live with your parents at 40, but surely way better than renting at 65 with no meaningful pension. And the way things are going, it's going to be *very* bad when this generation reaches retirement age. Even with a partner it's a struggle - me and my wife *just* scraped a mortgage with combined income and while my earnings have gone up substantially(ish) since, as a freelancer it wasn't an easy ride and could go tits-up on the flip of a penny. I will say there's a big difference between living at home when you're any adult age (20, 30, 40, 50 even) and living independently, buying your own food, doing your own cooking/shopping/cleaning, etc, as opposed to living at home and mummy and daddy still do all your shopping/cooking/cleaning for you. The latter is never acceptable above about 18 years old. Given the choice, I'd much rather live at home and my only issue being "people might think it's a bit odd" rather than be in the position some of my friends are in - decent enough house, mortgage, kids, but they're in an awful loveless marriage, hate each other, divorce is on the cards and they're either going to go through with it when the kids are older and end up in the shit financially, or arguably worse, end up not going through with it and hating each other until the day they die and putting on a false act in public. Like I say, worked in pubs for a while and you got a second sense for it with some regular couples. Nasty.
