I did all of that too but I don't miss it. It was fun and we are nostalgic about it because it was new and we saw the potential. We have seen the potential go way beyond what most imagined. So much more powerful and approachable today.

They were a fad. Moving them was a ridiculous exercise and they never went together right after bring disassembled. Fun and comfortable but completely impractical - the foundation for a short-term fad.

My Dad came to about 50% of my baseball games, Mom rarely. To be honest it wasn't that big a deal to me...I was just having fun playing, I really didn't care if they were there all the time.

It was a fantastic album - and a great comeback story for the band. It was unclear if they would go on after Bon Scott died. I personally think they were a more consistent and focused band with Brian coming in.

Do you like your adult kids?

I am proud of all of my adult kids. They are all independent and self sufficient. That earns them the right to make their own choices. Do I agree with all of them? Absolutely not - but they have to live with the consequences (good or bad) - not me. They all are productive and contributing to society - not going to quibble about small stuff.

Ummm… can you guys jump anymore?

I never had any other thought than to get married and have children. My marriage and children have brought me so much joy - it is indescribable. It has made me a better man and person. I never would have understood the meaning of selflessness without my wife and kids.

Look at the other post... Apparently it was insulting to suggest that balance was an important health indicator as we age...becausecsome people struggle with balance. It was pure thin-skinhead silliness.

How many of you can still put your socks on without sitting down first or having to lean on something. I can’t.

No one made a blanket statement. It is fact that balance is important - specifically as we age. If you have some sort of issue with balance, then that is an issue you have go address or deal with. Balance problems - for whatever reasons you have them - will cause other issues as you age. If you can't fix them because they aren't treatable, then I hope you find ways to live with it. However, your feelings about the statement don't make it less true. The risks of falling because of balance issues increases as we age - regardless of why we have a balance issue. We need strong, healthy hearts to live longer as well. Some people have lifelong defects with their heart that prevent them from exercising so their heart health is impacted. People have to accept those things and do their best. It doesn't mean it isn't a health problem - it is. It is just not one they can fix. Balance is, by and large, something you can work on. Of course there are always exceptions to that. But getting "insulted" when that is pointed out and true for the majority of people is just a weird reaction and frankly childish reaction.

Single leg balance is one of the biggest indicators of our overall health. It shows how well your nervous system, muscles, and sensory systems are communicating. It strongly relates to neuromuscular aging, longevity, and reduced fall risk. It is one of the reasons yoga exercises are great - because they focus on balance. Work on it - well worth your time.

We - as a generation - have seen the full advent of technology on a personal and societal level. I am not sure where the Luddite tendencies come from as the oldest of us have been immersed in tech since we were less than 10 years old (video games, PCs, Internet access) . While there are aspects to all tech that are negative, it is the reality we live in. It is a case of engage or be left behind.

Never was a drinker...a beer now and again and that is about it and certainly not hard alcohol. I grew up in Wisconsin where drinking is the state sport and saw way too many people I grew up with descend into alcoholism. Wasted, non-nutritional calories that lead to stupid behaviors. No thanks.

Slowing the aging process, maybe

Posted by hikeonpast@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 52 comments

GuitarHeroInMyHead@reddit

Solid advice. I am about to turn 60 and I have a metabolic age of 47. I do cardio 6 days a week and weight training 5 days a week, eat right, never smoked and essentially no alcohol outside of an occasional beer. I think the reducing stress point was spot on. Nothing ages you like stress. It wears on your body and your mind at a much higher rate than gravity! Attitude is such a huge part of it - much about getting older is about how you choose to handle it and look at it. The community is also a great point. The biggest disease older people have is loneliness - much of it self-inflicted. Stay active in mind and body and you are going to add years to your life.

First-time Colonoscopy

You are in lala land the whole time - you will wake up and it will be over. You will fart for about 20 minutes to expel all the air they blow into your colon to expand it and it is hilarious. No big deal. The worst part about it is the prep.

As noted...sad. Would you feel the same if she does the same thing? We should be trying just as hard for the "locked down" partner as we do trying to get them "locked down"...or we will be repeatedly be in this same cycle. We all gain weight, have struggles, etc. but if we actually just give up, then I wouldn't want to stay with me either!

Not wanting to be single is a good motivation! However, I still think it is sad that people have given up. You get payback out of the effort you put into your life, even if it is feeling good about your appearance. Even if you weren't single, does your girlfriend or wife want to spend time with a guy who looks like a hobo? How long will you have that girlfriend if you give up?

Levis are still the best option. The NYT just did a rundown on all the Levis models and how they fit. I was way overweight for a long time so all my clothes were baggy. Now I am considered slim/athletic so I like to show it off. I like the Levis 502 line. I also grab Lucky Brand when Costco has them because my wife says my ass looks great in them. I also have a few pairs of skinny Levi's 511. It also depends on what else you are wearing. I like boots like Doc Martens so skinny jeans that don't go over the boot look stupid...choose based on your outfit. Good for you wanting to dress nicer. I see so many GenX men my age who look like homeless people most of the time. They have given up - a sad statement for any generation. I am often told that I look way younger (sometimes 10-15 years younger) than I am because I dress reasonably stylishly. Nothing over the top, but quality clothes that fit well.

How famous was Michael Jackson really back then?

Posted by Normal_regular_dude@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 689 comments

GuitarHeroInMyHead@reddit

He was unequivocably the most recognizable and most famous celebrity on the planet in his day. He became famous as a little kid with the Jackson Five in the 70s, and he outshined all his brothers. While he released some solo albums earlier in the 1970s, when Off the Wall came out at the end of the decade, he started to explode. With Thriller (3 years later), he went into the stratosphere. I was not a huge fan of his kind of music, but I knew exactly who he was and I knew his songs because you couldn't watch MTV for 15 minutes without seeing at least two of his videos. Thriller sold 70 MILLION copies - the biggest selling album of all time by a long shot. Later on, he became more famous for his weird plastic surgery addiction, his bizarre personal life, and of course, the molestation allegations. But still hugely famous - even for all the wrong reasons.
