Am I the only gen Xer that likes BTS?

My husband hates them, my girlfriends hate them. Am I the only 51 year old that thinks new BTS songs sound like techno early 90s rave?
Amazing_Effective758@reddit
I like them and I’m genx
snodgrassjones@reddit
Built to Spill are the best!!
featherzz@reddit
I love BTS and other Kpop groups - my husband (who is 10 years older and a boomer) can name all the members. :)
rackandroll_@reddit
Yes
ZebraBorgata@reddit
No clue who or what BTS is.
Fishfry12@reddit
Me neither…. thanks for admitting that before me😃

Third! What is it?

Google says South Korean boy band

Why is this in Gen X ? Lol

My teenage daughter was crazy about them for about a month. Not really my thing at all.
LadyBertramsPug@reddit
I like them. They remind me of the beautiful androgynous New Wave groups of my youth, but they dance hella better.
My daughter and I have made a New Year’s Eve tradition of streaming a big K-pop concert that one of the companies puts on. It’s a lot of fun to watch.

Probably
CombatRedRover@reddit
I totally prefer BTS clips, because I like to get to know the mattress actress when she's not acting.
Wait, what?
AdGold205@reddit
BTS is good, but have you heard Stray Kids?
allbsallthetime@reddit
Our daughter is 41, she travels around the country to see any KPop artists that come to town.
Her husband is on board but he's more Black Pink.
She's off to Vegas soon for another concert.
My musical taste tapped out sometime in the late 80s.
She actually got me their Butter CD as a Father's Day present when it came out.
It's sad how much I know about KPop.
I have watched some BTS pay per view stuff, they are talented, just not my cup of tea.
Sinja_Minx@reddit
I like them too, and most synth-pop sounds a bit 90s-esque.
Itchy-Grapefruit2756@reddit

I know of at least four GenX people who are fans of BTS
Also several Boomers, GenJones, and Silent Gen.
Mikethemechanic00@reddit
My wife is at BTS for Tuesday this week in CA. She just got into Kpop 2 years ago. I got into it in 2013 with Hyuna. They do sound like 90s rave.
Bubbly_Following7930@reddit
I don't know who that is
iodine74@reddit
I love Built to Spill.
Vonnegut_butt@reddit
This gave me a good chuckle. But it’s also funny to me because I love Built to Spill and my wife loves BTS.
mvgame74@reddit
YES! Going to their concert in London this July! 😃
BrilliantDear5096@reddit
Not a BTS fan but I been listening to kpop since SES, FinKL and HOT.
fortunatelyso@reddit
I was army until this last album. Lost my interest completely. Destroyed my RM bias, feel awful for Jin. Suddenly saw the whole capitalistic manipulation of bighit and felt like a moron.
GogglesPisano@reddit
I prefer BTO.
ST0IC_@reddit
Not a fan of bts specifically, but I do like a lot of other k-pop. My daughter always asks me to make sure my radio is down though if I'm picking her up from school because she doesn't want her friends knowing I like it.

My daughters went thru a BTS phase, and they dragged my wife along. She still enjoys them but everyone has moved to other groups like Stay Kids, Twice, seventeen, etc.
As for me, my favorite band is The Warning, a rock band out of Mexico. I also love Band Maid, a rock band out of Japan.
Sintered_Monkey@reddit
If you like Band Maid, you like like Hanabie. They are currently my favorite band.
LewMetal@reddit
I like Band-Maid a lot, I saw them at couple years ago. Hanabie. is awesome, I want to see them one day. I started listening to Japanese metal and rock a few years ago when I discovered BABYMETAL (who I love).
Sintered_Monkey@reddit
I really like Baby Metal, but they have always been sort of a gimmick to me. Hanabie, despite their entire image, IMO is four very serious musicians who happen to have a gimmick. I just received my Hanabie T-shirt a couple of days ago, and they are always on my playlist.
LewMetal@reddit
I've got a bunch of Hanabie. songs in my playlist too.
Sintered_Monkey@reddit
I am about to retire and become a NEET (Not Employed in Education or Training,) so I listen to NEET Game many times a day in preparation for my retirement.
LeadingResearch9528@reddit (OP)

LewMetal@reddit
I've been to many K-pop concerts with my daughter, she's not into BTS but loves many other groups. I find the concerts entertaining but In don't listen to any K-pop on my own. I've seen BABYMETAL eleven times since 2023.
HermioneMarch@reddit
I have a few friends who got into it either tgeir daughters. I’ve never liked pop so k pop is no exception. But I don’t think you are the only one.
superbakedveteran@reddit
It's a South Korean boy band.
F-Cloud@reddit
BTS are awesome! Their music is super positive and they're immensely talented and charismatic people. Growing up a metalhead I never imagined I'd like a boy band, but BTS changed that. I'm not sure many GenX realize that how popular they are. Their concerts sell out almost instantly worldwide while other major musical acts are struggling to fill seats. I've never seen anything like it since Michael Jackson in the '80s.
agravain@reddit
my daughter was in to them fanatically and we were going to see them in Orlando before covid shut everything down.

LieOhMy@reddit
That's what popped into my head. Not sure who else it would be but pretty sure plenty of Gen Xers love Built to Spill.
archedhighbrow@reddit
My youngest introduced me to BTS. I wasn't sure at first, but then grew to love them. We went to Oakland for their concert in 2018 making mother/daughter memories. I have a crush on Jimin. I'm almost 60.
DiegoTheGoat@reddit
I’m going this weekend to Vegas to see them with my wife! We joke that I’m Army Reserves 💜
LadyNorbert@reddit
I have a GenAlpha friend who completely adores them, so I gave them a chance for her sake. I liked them much more than I expected I would! Not a clue what they're saying, of course (except in that one English song that gets radio play around here), but the music is enjoyably poppy.
nelltk421@reddit
I absolutely LOVE BTS💜 They are a one of a kind group and so incredibly special. Heading to Vegas this weekend with my daughter! I swore I would never get into kpop but then I fell down the purple rabbit hole and never got out 😂 love lots of other groups too!

Majik_Sheff@reddit
Taste is not restricted to age or origin. Most peoples' musical preferences are locked in by the time they reach late adolescence. Some people continue to explore and grow with the times. Some are just taken by a new thing that cuts through the noise.
Stagnation is the real soul killer. Love what you love and let others do the same. Don't let the killjoys win.
OreoSpeedwaggon@reddit
50-year-old guy here. I dig BTS (and K-pop in general). I think their music is fun.
LeadingResearch9528@reddit (OP)
Right? It’s not deep, it’s just fun. Our generation has become a bunch of fuddy-duddies that hate all music made after 1995.
TootieSummers@reddit
No Kpop for me but for whatever reason, I’m into T-pop which has zero hold on anyone outside of Thailand and me (I think lol)
Bokononfoma@reddit
I don't really know with this means, but I have some good friends really into it. Rest assured that you are not alone.
elspotto@reddit
I’m not above a little k-pop every now and again. I hate when people our age get on the “there’s no good music since 1995 (or whenever)” kick. That just means you stopped looking for new music.
QueenVell@reddit
I prefer Seventeen.

beeredditor@reddit
I have hated all boy bands since the New Kids on The Block in the 80s. Every decade we get a new spin of a group of young guys singing cringey, high pitched vocals with synchronized dancing. I hate them all, including BTS!
munq8675309@reddit

I'm an old GenXer and was late to the party with BTS. But now that I've arrived? I'm a fan!

56 and male here and not a huge BTS fan, though they do have some good songs. Of boy bands I prefer Stray Kids, but I’m more into the girl groups (and not just K-pop, but in most genres of music I tend to lean more toward female vocalists, with 70s and early 80s being the exception to that rule). Favorites are IU, Taeyeon, Mamamoo, Dreamcatcher, Twice and Blackpink. Started getting into Le Sserafim here recently after seeing the collab they did with Beatpella House.

Here in Japan BTS is HUUUUGE with Gen X women. There was a pop up BTS store in Shibuya selling merch for their tour and the average age of shoppers had to be around 45-50.
How do I know?
My wife is one of them.
kobuta99@reddit
Neutral overall because I don't know enough about their music. They seem relatively innocuous for a boy band.

I'm the same with Twice. I prefer Kpop girl groups to the boy bands but can appreciate why you would like them
Sometimes it feels like I'm the oldest Once in the world, but then I see posts by other over 50s who wonder if they are too old too. But there was an 80 year old at one Twice concert. 😄
I'd recommend Taemin if you like BTS.
