How many concussions have you had?

I asked my wife, who’s about 10 years younger than me, how many concussions she has? She said zero, of course. BShe then asked me. I told her that it is probably less than 10, but I don’t remember.

No idea. Probably one. Smacked my head hard enough as a kid to be unconscious for a few minutes.
Alycion@reddit
I stopped counting in my 29’s. Probably more than I’d seen in a full nhl season. The testing fl for permanent issues sucks, but I don’t have any, so that’s good. My first one was when I was around 7. Car accident.
Karadek99@reddit
None diagnosed, bit there at least 2 times I’d be suspicious about.
Diligent-Touch-5456@reddit
3 diagnosed, but not sure how many I got from my ex's abuse.
sciencerules51202@reddit
This is a hard one to answer because of the changes made in contact sports and medical assessment. I played soccer, basketball and softball growing up and also rode 3 wheeler ATV in the 80’s. I know i was head trauma/contact in all of these that Today someone would have evaluated as a concussion. According to my medical record I have zero concussions based on what I know today and looking back at some of these events at least 4 or 5.
ZettaiGeek@reddit
At 11, had a baseball backstop fall on me - broke my nose pretty bad - probably had an undiagnosed concussion
Did Martial Arts as a teen and did pro Muay Thai in Japan in the late 80s/early 90s - had by bell rung a few times, knocked out twice.
In my 30s, got rear-ended by a semi on the freeway when I was stuck in bridge traffic. Blacked out from the pain for about a minute (?) or so.
My best guess is about 4...
BigLoudWorld74@reddit
I've had 2 diagnosed and probably another 3 or 4 I didn't go to the doctor for. To be fair they happened over 20 years of skateboarding so I don't think it's a bad record.
OG-BigMilky@reddit
As far as I know, zero and I played some contact sports.
Mysterious_Battle585@reddit
I mean, nothing OFFICIALLY diagnosed as such. But I figure about three.
mtcrick@reddit
Pretty sure 4...hit a truck sledding when I was 5, my head hit the ice when I was ice skating the day I broke my arm, there was the time roller skating, and the time my oldest brother hit me in the head with a soaked nerf football at our sister's wedding...
wieldymouse@reddit
My guess is at least one, maybe two, but I may never have had one since no one took me to get checked out after I hit my head/got hit in the head.

I would say at least half a dozen times that i am pretty sure of, but only 2 were diagnosed.
1 was an accidental crack to the face with a baseball bat (i leaned into what i thought was a strike in parking lot baseball. The batter brought his bat back to original position. Face meet bat.)
1 was an almost fatal 3-wheeler accident.
The others were all mini-bike mishaps, skateboard bails, or falling on my head instead of landing gracefully jumping off or out of things.

I have had several instances where I "probably" had one but wasn't looked at because the doctors just waved their hands as overreacting woman, so I can't say for sure. But I know for sure, two diagnosed. The last one was a doozy. It messed up my vision permanently to the point that I can't drive without some massive prisms in the lenses.

txgax@reddit
You ask an interesting question. What were you doing when you got your concussions, I.e. sports, car accident, work, etc.?
I’m probably in the same situation, less than 10 but more than five. Most of mine were from contact sports, notably football.
FrigOffLuh@reddit
1 for me. Whiplash at the same time. Slipped on ice in the driveway and have no recollection of the fall itself. Was unconscious but don't know for how long.

At least 3 or 4. The craziest one is one day I was working from home and decided to sit outside on our deck. We lived in a small harbor outside Seattle and at low tide our part of the harbor would completely empty. One second I’m working on my laptop and the next minute something hits me in the head like a sledgehammer. It took me a few seconds to get my bearings. I reached up to touch my head and it was covered in blood and a thick semi-liquid white stuff. My first thought was is that I was shot and the white stuff was my brains. It took a while but I eventually figured out a crow had grabbed a very large clam from the harbor bottom and was trying to use my deck to break them open. Later on I saw several crows take the clams to around 30 feet high and drop them onto our deck and they’d break open.

Like, 8-10 or so. The worst was when I fell off my bike and shattered my jaw. I was out cold for a while.
There was one that worked out pretty well. I grew up surrounded by horses and there was one that was kind of an asshole. But her owner was a 20-something woman that was hot AF. I had a crush. I was about 16-17, so I had no chance. But I was about 16-17 and horny, lol, so I had dreams. We were putting the horse in a trailer and I reached across to pull the bar across the back gate and the horse kicked hard, sending the bar right into my skull, knocking me out cold. She panicked and when I came to, I was on my back and she was on her knees cradling me in her lap. My face was, like inches away from her tits. I could have hopped up, but you better believe I stretched that moment out as long as possible. I was groggy, not stupid.

I whacked my head big time unraveling quickly on a twisted up tire swing with my head tilted way back… right into a solid wood bench. (How Gen X is that?) Blood everywhere. Yes, I've been out completely since 2015. I'll never go back again. I prefer to be alone at this point in life. I have my animals and my close family and it's more than enough and once I figured that out and let the images go that I had thought my life should look like, it became so much easier. I still have headaches and problems with my balance and ringing in my ears at times but I feel like I survived something so many people don't. I'm grateful for my life now. When my nose was broken when a softball hit my face at my mom's house, I wasn't taken to the doctor either. So, that may also have been a concussion but all I am sure that I got was a bloody, broken nose.

3 or 4 probably.
EightLegedDJ@reddit
Three. First one I was in high school in the 80s and fell off a horse. I cracked my cheek bone, it was bad. I have no memories of it, but of what I was told about it afterwards. Second was a car accident in my early 20s. Third was in my thirties. I was working in a restaurant and got hit in the head with a big metal pan of raw meat. I had a really hard time with memory loss and vertigo after that one. Fun times.

I had three, I remember every one. First one I was four years old when I got hit on my temple with a softball. Second one was a point blank golf ball on my head when I was about 13, the third one was bad. I played jello tug-o-war at a company picnic and my feet slipped out from me, I kept hold of the rope but flipped a one-eighty backwards, I blacked out and came to. No hospital visits except the softball one.

At least 4 or 5, mostly before age of 18. Doing stupid shit.
ShireHorseRider@reddit
When did smacking one’s head start being recognized as a concussion?
captain_222@reddit
If you see stars or if your consciousness is affected at all, it was probably a concussion. Had like 5 before the age of 16!
ShireHorseRider@reddit
Oh wow. If that’s how they set the bar I can think of 3-5 that I remember all too well plus probably plenty of other times that were likely but not as… significant.
I think the worst would have been when a welding tanks regulator blew up about 2’ away from my face. It really messed up my eye (stitches on the eyeball) and it rang my bell so hard that I thought I was going to pass out. I actually squatted down because of how hard it hit. I don’t know why it never occurred to me that the particular explosion likely gave me a concussion too.

1 for sure, but I was the lucky one there. The other guy shattered his jaw as we collided trying to catch a pop up. It's possible I had a few more because I was a catcher and umpire for so long.

1 for sure, high wild fastball to the back of the head just below my baseball helmet. Played football too, and maybe 1.
Eastern_Habit_5503@reddit
I can think of two incidents in my youth where I most likely got concussed (was never officially diagnosed though): 1- got my head hit by a baseball bat (cheekbone) ; 2- tripped over a four foot split-rail fence post and landed head to rocky ground.

I had my bell rung playing football in high school and from wiping out on my bike on a dirt road, but that was nothing compared to falling on the ice...

10+ - my little brother got diagnosed as an adult with ODD. His favorite meltdown as a kid was to either headbutt me or kick me in the face. Plus bike accidents, playing football, car accident, and trick riding.

Same, easily 10 plus. I have been struggling and thinking I might have CTE. There were lots of car accidents, and fights. I never used to get so angry until a few years ago.

I have had at least three serious concussions and probably five or six minor ones. All but 1 was undiagnosed to there is a chance it could be higher or lower.
GoldenMonkeyRedux@reddit
I've had a very similar life. One of my last ones resulted in two weeks off work because I was just unable to concentrate on anything. That one actually scared me. I've had two slight ones since. And a whole bunch as a kid in the 70's and 80's.
Kapt_Krunch72@reddit

ZenPokerFL@reddit
I’ve had at least 3 that I know of.
Broke my face in HS baseball practice running into a teammate.
Car accident in my 30s; my wife said I was mixing up words afterwards.
Passed out and cracked my head on our bathroom tile floor, got 7 stitches for that one.
I may have had one or two others playing junior high football but not sure. I’ll go with 3 to be safe.
Either-Ship2267@reddit
2 for certain that knocked me out. First was a head on collision when I was 17. The other was caused by fainting from dehydration & busting my head on a tile floor.
Possibly a couple of other times. I hit my head hard enough to literally hear bells while skiing once. Hit myself in the head with piece of metal fence post when I was pulling too hard & it broke off suddenly. Had a rough & tumble childhood on a farm where we were always falling out of trees, bike wrecks, etc. so I probably took a few too many knocks to the head.

This was well over ten years ago, so they just prescribed me something I couldn’t pronounce and didn’t help anyway.
I got it during our annual defensive tactics training (LE) while practicing falling backward to the ground and breaking your fall.
Long story short, I didn’t break my fall. You’re supposed to tuck your chin in and make sure your head doesn’t snap back and hit the ground. Well, my head snapped back and hit the mat we were practicing on.

As a tike 4 serious ones that I kinda remember, only bc there’s gaps in my memories from right before impact and then coming home from the scene of the crime. Sitting on the kitchen counter holding ice on my head. Or taking a Dettol bath bc I’m scraped up all over and it’s quicker to soak in the tub than clean up with cotton wool (which was expensive).
I had at least another 6-7 at school, during PE, stairs slippery from rain, and a girl who hated me on sight, she pushed me down the long staircase when we were alone.
I can still hear/feel that heavy thud on my head tumbling down and then the pain landing on my hands and knees - I broke an ulna on one arm, the radius on the other.

I’d say 3 that I’m positive about. One in JR high where I lost consciousness for a while, one in HS football and one skiing when I was in my 30’s . That one was a quick knock out. The last one was the one where I had to clear the cobwebs.
jackparadise1@reddit
You mean like so far, right? I lost count after six.
spoink74@reddit
Three.
The third one was a bike accident. I learned that what I experienced was called a concussion.
Then I remembered the two previous ones. Those were in Junior High when budding gang bangers roamed the school hitting kids upside the head till they passed out. That happened to me twice in eighth grade. Never told anybody because it wasn’t a time in my life that I felt like any good would come of telling people that I got concussed by junior high gang bangers.

Maybe one or two…. fell off a two-story roof when I was five and broke my leg and when I was 45, I got in a severe truck accident where I hit my head and broke my back, pelvis, most of my ribs, collarbone and ankle. My brain took a long time to come back online after that accident.
Uberutang@reddit
At least 4 that I can remember and one ending up being severe skull fractures. Head swole up like a Smurf balloon (car accident, I went through the front window and then the vehicle rolled over me, age 9). Spend a long time in hospital after that one. Fist one was first week of kindergarten. Teacher (care lady) had us make instruments from house and garden stuff. Girl behind me hit me on the head with a rock during her “drum solo”. Needless to say when I shave my head it looks like I’ve been in some crazy fights due to all the stitches scars.

Zero - but I was the wet blanket of my friend group aka mom, the prude, the downer, the bummer, the straight edge, the always wear sunscreen, the designated driver... and now I'm the "you were right" friend. Exactly! I skateboarded like a fiend as a teen, mountainboarded and longboarded through my twenties, did roller derby for 7 years before I started going easier on my body.
So the best I can say is, "A good amount. More than most, probably?"
tigers692@reddit
Three, for sure, maybe five.
smile_saurus@reddit
Zero. I am a woman, and I think girls & women are so used to having to practice self-preservation since childhood that we are simply more careful in most aspect of life. So we may tend to choose different sports or utilize more protective equipment.
As an example: my childhood neighbor (a boy) broke his leg jumping off of our neighbor's garage, into the pool (he missed the pool). My brother then decided it was a good idea to do the same. He yelled Super Fly!' (Jimmy Snooka, a wrestler in the 80s) and jumped off of the garage, too. And also broke his leg. We girls saw that happen (twice) and decided that even playing mermaids, underneath the hoped-for landing spot, was too dangerous. A third boy climbed up to the garage roof and at that point one of the girls went to get a Mom. (I'm not sure how none of them were aware that children were scaling the garage and that 2 had already broken leg, but hey - it was the 80s).

Got knocked out? Stick some smelling salt under his nose and get him back out there. I heard plenty of times "you're fine" "Rub some dirt on it" "shake it off you pansy"
If bones weren't sticking out or you couldn't stand was about the only medical attention you were getting. That's not even considering extreme heat in full gear without plenty of fluids
minicpst@reddit
Exactly. I had two before I knew what concussion were. Both decently serious. I fell down the stairs once and blacked out. No blood. I was fine.
I got knocked out sledding alone. I only know I was knocked out because there was a fine layer of fresh snow on me. But the light had come on, so that was my main priority.
I realized they were concussions 35+ years later.

Nothing was ever diagnosed but I got my “bell rung” playing football a few times. I was foggy in the moment but nothing long term.
1989DiscGolfer@reddit
I got my head knocked around a bunch as a kid in contact sports. Played football through 9th grade, where they had us being the scrimmage sacrifice to varsity and got pummeled daily. I remember squaring up a guy on kickoff in a game, POW!!!, then seeing grass and definitely those bright white stars.
I was also a catcher and tons of foul balls ricocheted off my helmet and face mask. It's pretty jarring sometimes, or at least in 1990 it was, where my helmet wasn't much more than a batting helmet with that old-fashioned separate mask. Sometimes a foul ball will knock you silly. Had it happen more times than I can remember in 4 years of that. Also got bowled over more than a few times, one time for the front page of the local newspaper when I held on for the out. I remember limping around a lot after that play. (Humble brag, since I'm here, threw out over half of those attempting to steal a base my senior year after our new coach knew what he was doing, had played for TCU in the late '70s and wasn't just an English teacher or parent at our small school. Great on defense, couldn't hit.).

Princetex96@reddit
I’m a 57 female and I’ve had 2. The first was in summer of 1978 when I was playing “rock war” with the neighborhood kids (basically a team of kids would throw rocks at another team of kids 🤣). I do remember getting hit in the temple, falling down, and literally seeing stars spin around my head (just like in the cartoons!) …then nothing. The next thing I remember was a neighbor’s mom standing over me asking me if I was ok. Did I get medical attention? Lol no. But I had a headache for days!
The 2nd one was in 1997 and more serious. I crashed my bicycle going pretty fast and hit the concrete face first and slid. Was out for several minutes. My poor husband thought I had died. Broke my nose and had a gash across it from my sunglasses. Lots of blood. Knocked my teeth loose. Had very deep road rash on the right side of my face, backs of my hands, and the right side of my neck and shoulder. An ambulance was called by a passersby with a mobile phone. I woke up in the ER, freaked out because I was aware I couldn’t properly remember the answers to the neuro check questions they were asking me. Couldn’t remember who the president was or what year it was. I had longer lasting neurological effects from that one, but felt fully recovered after about 3 months. And surprisingly my face completely recovered without scars except for the faint suture line across the bridge of my nose. My husband requested a plastic facial surgeon to stitch me up…good thinking!

Prestigious-Tip-6819@reddit
Pretty sure I had three. One from performing flips off of a speed bump with my bike. I still have no idea how I figured out I could do flips. But my last flip resulted in landing on my head. No helmet, of course.
But the biggie was Airborne School TWICE. First time was sitting up suddenly from a dead sleep in bed. Slammed my head into the drawer runner on the bunk bed above me. I guess I knocked myself out because I woke up to serous fluid dripping from a gash in my forehead.
Second one was the swing landing trainer. I was dropped pretty high while swinging backwards. Those Kevlars are heavy and my head slammed into the ground. I literally saw stars and heard chirping. The black hat yelled at me to "stand-up"! My eye balls must have been jumping because he immediately told me to "sit down"!

I can specifically remember about 6, the total count is in the low 20s. The worst were when I was hit by a semi while on a bicycle (thank God I had my helmet on) and when I fell out of a hayloft in Kansas at about the age of 4. I landed on one of the tractor attachments. I lost all the front teeth, top and bottom, and was pretty badly injured as well.

Let's just say heavy percentage of Neanderthal DNA. Another memorable one was when I was rear ended at a red light. The other car was going 50 or so. Both cars totaled. My wife and I went to the hospital. She missed two weeks of work and spent a few days in the hospital. The doc who read my xrays ( not the person who took them) , was amazed by both the thickness and density of my bones. I didn't even miss a day of work, just drove her car while shopping for a used car. The doctor literally came down to the er, convinced the tech was playing a joke on him. He asked to see the patient. I simply waved at him. He then did another set of xrays (after asking my permission) for "his personal records. I made sure he got my feet as well. I broke three toes and both ankles (multiple times) as a kid. He said I had the thickest bones he had seen. In his opinion I must be a Neanderthal throwback. Keep in mind, this was in 1999, before all the discussions about Neanderthal DNA percentages.
But yeah. The worst by far was when I was clipped by a semi. I was in college, riding a bike because I couldn't afford a car. According to the witnesses who called both the police and an ambulance it appeared that either I was caught by the wind as he barreled past me, or perhaps he swerved a little. I was bounced off the side of the truck more than once. The truck driver never stopped or slowed down. They didn't get the plates. I don't remember that day at all, and after that accident I had enough damage it was like six months of rehabilitation to be able to function again. Needless to say I flunked out of school, since I couldn't remember basically anything. I've had long term memory damage from this. I think of it as God hitting the reset button.

One was at 10 when I fell out of my uncle's vehicle when he turned a corner. The door latch didn't work properly.

When I had imaging done, the doc said I had the weirdest AVM he'd ever seen, that they're normally congenital but this looked like literal brain damage. Concussions are no joke, especially when you need all your fingers and toes to count em. Doc said the AVM is basically a ticking time bomb in my head, and that surgery was necessary to resolve. Brain surgery? No thanks. I've made it to 56yo, and I'm better at counting my blessings than I am at counting concussions lol Tldr easily over 20+ concussions

No-Window-7657@reddit
I've had 2 and they were both doozies. I was a kid for the first one, so I'll tell that story. I was in 2nd grade, so 7. We had a babysitter, which was very rare because we were pretty broke so a night out for my folks was a big deal. I was dragging my little sister around our basement floor on a blanket, skating across the floor in my socks. Well, my feet stopped unexpectedly but I had all this forward momentum and was holding the blanket by the corners over my shoulders. As I went down, there was no time to move my hands and I hit the concrete floor with my whole face. I remember pushing my head up and looking at the babysitter who was on the (corded) phone. She stopped mid sentence and stared at me, open mouthed.
The next thing I remember, I was upstairs on the recliner with a bag of ice on my face, so I had clearly lost consciousness long enough for adults to arrive. The babysitter, her mom, and my folks were all there. I was awake, so we didn't go to the ER. My forehead was a giant goose egg and I had two black eyes starting. My nose was never the same again. My parents were pissed that I'd ruined date night.
Decades later, I had these chronic sinus infections and migraines for nearly a year and wound up getting a CT scan. Turns out, I'd deviated my septum so badly that it had grown into my sinus. It had to be surgically repaired.
As an adult and parent now, I'm certain I would handle this differently for my own kiddos. And my nose still wiggles easily under the lightest touch. Sleeping on it funny will make it lopsided.
We were fucking feral.

I've had 2 in my life. First one after being thrown from a horse (no, I did not get back on one after that). Second one from an ice skating mishap.
My hubby on the other hand is into double digits for concussions. Between sports in high school, getting hurt on the job (was a volunteer firefighter and then worked on an ambulance), and a bad ride on a roller coaster at Great America, he's had probably 15 or so.
That is not counting the TBI (traumatic brain injury) he got in 2017 when he was assaulted. And now concussion symptoms happen much faster from hits of much less force.

When they asked me in the ER about past head trauma, the scene in the Simpson where they flashback to every time Homer took a hit to the skull came to mind. Unfortunately, more than I know for sure. One when I was around ten when I jumped up to catch a baseball , but I was under our heavy duty clothes lines and split open my head. I woke up with a doctor in a white coat standing over me. Two serious car accidents in my 20s…and then came epilepsy. Probably caused from previous head injuries. At least 20 since then, and many many many injuries. I blew out my eye socket when I had a seizure and timbered on a pool deck. Staples on my head far too close to my spinal cord when I had one in the kitchen and literally ripped a knob off of a cabinet as I fell. Flew to Chicago four hours later to see Dead 50. Several ER visits! The last was on April 20th. I remember walking down the stairs in the morning for water and woke up in bed with a squishy lump on my head. Probably should have gone to the ER but we were headed to Vegas to see music at the Sphere and The Virgin. The lump isn’t squishy anymore but still hurts. I’m a patient of a professor at UCLA who studies epilepsy. I’m going to see her and do an MRI again next week. I will be donating my brain to science to study CTE.

Two diagnosed (one from fainting on the basement floor when I was an anemic teen and one from a skiing accident in my '50s) but probably a few more minor ones now that I know so much about how even seemingly mild bumps to the head can cause concussions. I probably also had a concussion from undiagnosed whiplash after being hit in a fender bender in my 20s. I never connected the years of debilitating headaches and migraines I had in grad school to that accident until a friend mentioned many years later that she thought my general propensity toward headaches had gotten a lot worse after that accident. I was already so used to having frequent stress headaches and trying to power through them that I'm sure I didn't take any care to rest after the accident. I have a family history of dementia and worry about my risk a LOT. Not enough, apparently, to modify my diet and exercise as much as I should, but enough to be on Wegovy and be making an effort.

At least three. Once at age 4 when I was run over by a car,, twice,,, same car.. She literally backed up and got me a 2nd time. 2nd time was in Jr High when a football jock grabbed me from behind and did he best pile drive into the gym floor. 3rd time was… I don’t remember.
Stubborn_Strawberry@reddit
I've had my head split open a few times, some bad falls, etc, so I'm sure I've had a few. I was only taken to ER once because a head wound wouldn't stop bleeding and they had to put in a few switches. Cruel buggers never even froze it first.
Usually, it was just take a hit, see stars or black out for a minute, headache, ears ringing, dizzy, puke, try to walk it off, puke some more and generally feel like crap for days/weeks.
QuarrieMcQuarrie@reddit
5- three from horse riding, one from country dancing in primary school and one from hockey.
gemgirlshari@reddit
Oh there's a story for #4. I wanna hear it!
QuarrieMcQuarrie@reddit
Not much really- this was normal hockey. We were walking back after the game into the changing room, and the person in front of me kind of slung her stick over her shoulder and knocked me clear between the eyes. I went down like a sack of spuds lol.
The weirdest one was a horse fall- I was wearing a hat. Jumped a ditch on my horse and as he circled round he slipped and we both fell. I literally got straight back up- checked him and hopped back on. It wasn't until halfway through the ride home we realised I couldn't remember the day leading up to it. I could remember everything else but it took years for me to remember the day, the ride and the fall.
OrioleTragic@reddit
And the line dancing concussion?
QuarrieMcQuarrie@reddit
English country dancing- I was being swung around by Jason, my partner, when I tripped on the leg of a vaulting horse and went down on the parquet flooring. Think we must have been 6 or 7 😁
gemgirlshari@reddit
THIS is what I was waiting for. Followup: do you dance as an adult now? Or did the trauma from sqare dancing ruin you?
QuarrieMcQuarrie@reddit
Apologies, I thought you meant the hockey one- obviously cannot count either.
QuarrieMcQuarrie@reddit
I do not dance now lol, unless you mean me raving to Faithless when no one is looking. I danced at school after that though- was very fond of maypole dancing. Not sure if that's still a thing lol.
LightOtter@reddit
1 diagnosed one, about a month ago. 1 probable one when i was a kid. I fell asleep after that one.
skeeterbmark@reddit
Two I’m certain of, probably more from playing football in HS.
yarn_slinger@reddit
At least one (off piste tobogganing) but possibly more that just never registered as an injury.
Tndnr82@reddit
I think 3.
moccasinsfan@reddit
I did not go to a doctor and get diagnosed but I am a RN so I know the symptoms.
I had 1 mild concussion. While mowing on a riding lawn mower, I mowed under my kids swing set. Unknown to me the mower snagged the swings chain and tipped the swingset down on me. The top crossbar of the A frame hit me on the back of the head. I had a constant mild headache for a few days.
Macropixi@reddit
At least four, probably more
bobthenob1989@reddit
I got hit in the head at close range by a golfball at 13. Never went to the ER, but it def hurt.
Optimal-Ad-7074@reddit
one. playing a hand-clap game with a neighbour kid at around 6, sitting astride the porch balustrade. fell straight off the balustrade onto my head.
I was forty-seven before an adult friend explained how I probably achieved that. he teaches theatre and has kids do hand clap chants as an exercise. he thinks I missed a cross clap; said he's seen teenagers knock themselves off their own feet by doing that.
no medical memories, but the concussion is pretty definite. I remember sleeping in my parents' bed, some extremely worried expressions and not a lot else over the next couple of days. and a crank cousin of my dad's giving me some little sugar balls, either placebo or homeopathic something.
wade1975@reddit
Car accident at 13, fell on my face at 18...so 2.

I fell off a wall running away from playing Knock a Dolly (Ding Dong Ditch).
I ran head first into the same wall after getting water in my eyes splashing in a paddling pool.
redhawkdrone@reddit
Diagnosed, zero. I played sports in the 80’s. You brushed off the hit, got to your feet and did your best to shake it off as quickly as possible so you didn’t get pulled from the game. Man up…that’s what they said.
I didn’t know anyone back then with lingering effects of a concussion that lasted days, let alone weeks…or sensitivity to lights. Today, I’ve coached youth sports and seen kids miss entire an entire season with lasting effects of a concussion.
I keep asking - what’s changed besides awareness? Diet? Training? Degree of impact or is it tied to screen dependency? Not sure but it feels like concussions in any sport are are much more debilitating today than back in the 80’s.
Diela1968@reddit
Maybe cheaper made helmets don’t protect as well.
shedwyn2019@reddit
Who knows? I definitely had one in college, and I pretty sure I had one from skating across the linoleum in socks as a kid because I blacked out. I probably had several other head injuries that qualified so let us say 5 in 54 years? I didn’t play sports.
Iammine4420@reddit
A few.

notsensitivetostuff@reddit
Never diagnosed but what I’ve been told about or can recall: -as a toddler I crawled under the swing my sister was in, stitches so probably a concussion -playing in the creek throwing rocks as a preteen, my cousin hit me in the head with a huge piece of rip rap, stitches so probably a concussion -racing cyclocross at 40ish years smacked my head pretty good.. things all wonky for a bit, probably a concussion -who know how many other smaller bangs and falls..

Diagnosed. 2.

About six, I'd say. Bikes, no helmets, climbing trees etc..
SFToddSouthside@reddit
I played a lot of hockey in my life, so probably several that I don't know about. Never had one diagnosed. There was also a time I was playing football at recess in grade school and actually got knocked out on a play. Just got back up and went back to class.

A lot. Sports, bicycle and motorcycle wrecks ( thought is was Evil Knievel in my younger years), bouncer for years, and over all doing stupid shit. Now suffering chronic migraines which Dr. thinks is due to concussions when I was younger. 59yo now.
Korvanacor@reddit
One that was diagnosed a week after the fact. Was from a minor bump on a cabinet doorframe. Just a quick dammit on the swear pain scale.
2 years out and my hearing Center is still wonky. Tinnitus and an ultra sensitivity to things being slightly out of tune, so live jazz is difficult to listen too. Rooms full of loud people are also uncomfortable to be in.

I don’t actually know…
I fell a number of times as a kid. Knocked myself into the wall a few times, too, coming around corners too quick. My grandmother would give me an ice pack for the “goose egg” on my head and send me on my way.
I’ve only had one serious concussion from a car accident though. I’m okay. The car was totaled though. Needed my eyeglasses replaced too. But otherwise okay.

One (undiagnosed) about 15 years ago while playing roller derby. I didn’t lose consciousness, but for a while afterwards all the lights seemed REALLY BRIGHT and all the sounds were REALLY LOUD. I laid on the floor of the locker room with the lights off for about half an hour, and was fine after that.
Now that concussions are a big deal, I realize how lucky (and stupid) I was.

3 for sure . Two from bicycle falls and one from a metal chest . Those are the ones that I can remember. 2 before the age of 10, the other in my 20’s . The last one was wipeout on my 10 speed on the way to work. Went back home, cleaned it up, called my boss to tell him I’d be late and was on my way.
BlmgtnIN@reddit
Actually diagnosed with 1? None. Pretty hard knocks to the old skull before it was a thing to go to the doctor after one? 3 or 4 probably.
basementguerilla@reddit
52 year old man. I'm guessing 3-6. Obviously none were diagnosed cause you know, the 80's. Couple from football, probably one when my brother threw an aluminum baseball bat at my head when I wasn't looking, one at work when a guy swung a hammer, missed the nail but not my head. At least 3 of those knocked me out for a few seconds. Few more times I got stitches on my head that might or might not have been concussions.
AZPeakBagger@reddit
Had a handful in my 20's when I was racing bicycles. Two that knocked me out cold for 30-60 seconds. But the straw that broke the camel's back was about a dozen years ago. I was out trail running and tripped over a rock. Woke up and could see the stars zipping by and the birds twerping like you see in cartoons. Dusted myself off and ran 5 miles back to my car. But that concussion changed my personality and I struggled with work for the next few years.
In the long run it was a positive, but it did scare me about the effects of a TBI after a fall. Nothing to scoff at.
AbjectPoetry4699@reddit
0 medically confirmed. Slipped on the ice once as a young adult and saw stars after I bonked my head. No ill effects other than a sore spot on my head.
I worked with a neuroscientist who studied concussions and brain injury for a while. His work indicated that most people could handle two “typical” concussions without big problems. But the third one seemed to be the threshold for medically significant consequences, FWIW.
s1l1c0n3@reddit
At least 8 that I know of. Did I play sports? No. Am I clumsy and did I do a lot of UrbEx photography and fall in abandoned buildings a lot? I can't remember because of how many concussions I've had.
jimbopalooza@reddit
2 I know of for sure and a few other pretty good knocks to the dome. I was reckless and played a lot of sports growing up. Never got knock unconscious but I’ve definitely “seen stars” multiple times. I got hit in the back of the head by a line drive at baseball practice once and I’m probably lucky that didn’t kill me. I’ll never forget that feeling of having my “bell rung”.
NoYOUGrowUp@reddit
Somehow I made it through seven years of playing football and never got one. I did get one when I slipped on some ice when I was around 25, though.

Probably one as an adult in my late 20’s.
kalelopaka@reddit
I couldn’t even say. At least 10, possibly more. Between bike, motorbike, dirtbike, motorcycle wrecks, getting hit by a car, working construction, playing football, fights, and a definite one getting hit in the head by a 600lb steel sled going 40 mph. I shrugged them off and went on like we were all taught to do.

I've never lost consciousness due to a blow to the head, but when I was 12 I rode my bike out of the bed of a truck and I just nosedived and hit the top of my head. Almost certainly one— though the skull fractures from that incident loom larger in my memory.
jaxbravesfan@reddit
Four bad ones. Three of them playing sports in high school and college, and the fourth one just a few years ago. Probably at least a dozen or more minor ones. All I know is that I have a malfunctioning pituitary gland that doesn’t produce several things like it should anymore, and after a brain MRI to look for the assumed pituitary tumor about 10 years back, the doctor told me since there was no tumor, the most likely explanation for my pituitary gland crapping out was damage from my concussions.
gmhelwig@reddit
One for sure, probably a second one but we never sought medical help for it. And there may be others.
donutello2000@reddit
At least 2 - one knocked me out when I was 6, and I woke up at a neighbors house, and another at the bottom of a ski slope in my 20s. I also fell on my head a few times besides that, all before I turned 8, needing stitches but not sure whether they were concussions.
Somehow I turned out ok - but maybe I'll pay the price in the future.
Deeschuck@reddit
Seven or so? I used to climb myself into precarious situations as a child pretty often. Then came the bikes and motorcycles and horses.
The most ridiculous one was from a boat winch. My best friend and I were going fishing with our dads, riding in the back seat of a 1980 Caprice which was towing a bass boat. Long story short, due to fog, damp roads, a downhill slope, and no ABS, we ended up t-boning a guard rail and the boat ended up on top of the car. The trailer winch snapped off, came through the back window and glanced off the back of my skull.
Never broken a bone though.
Cubbance@reddit
Zero. Is this something more common in our generation?
Pypsy143@reddit
Just one.
We were playing intramural football in HS (all girls school) and one particularly aggressive girl slammed into me and sent me flying backwards.
My back hit the cinder block wall, snapping my head back which slammed the wall even harder.
Everything went black and the last thing I remember is hearing the sound of my bones clattering to the floor.
When I came to, my entire class and our PE teacher were crowded around me. My mom came and took me to the hospital.
We had a test that day and all my friends got out of it because they said they were so worried about me. Lol
