How many of you can still put your socks on without sitting down first or having to lean on something. I can’t.

How many of you can still put your socks on without sitting down first or having to lean on something. I can’t.
idk012@reddit
I brush my teeth on one leg and then the other. Some days I need more help stabilizing than others.
aftcg@reddit
Careful what you admit here about physical health! Last time I did it I got squished for it and people actually dm'd me their exercise routine!
THSSFC@reddit
Lmk if you want mine, sicko.
aftcg@reddit
Lol, thanks! I got asked about mine a few days ago, so I posted mine that my IFBB competing, Dr of PT, Dr of Fitness, Marine Corps Sgt built for me. Got some nice criticism about that too. Never mind it made me lose 35 lbs, gain a fiscal shit ton of meat, with no injuries after a year, at 55 yo.
peepee2tiny@reddit
Yea this happens a lot.
Complain about stiff joints and back pain and suddenly everyone is a cross fit guru that claims it's just because you don't do 100 burpees and 100 pushups and 100 sit ups every day.
Ok-Cap-204@reddit
I have never put my socks on without sitting down. I never even knew it was a thing.
Great-Attitude@reddit
I've never even seen anyone doing it
vicsanbarajas@reddit
Exactly this
Great-Attitude@reddit
What🤨 I've been sitting down to put my socks 🧦 on since I was a child. I've never seen anyone putting socks on standing up
ieatsilicagel@reddit
I've never even considered putting socks on while standing. Doesn't seem safe.
inDefenseofDragons@reddit
I actually stand to put on my socks for this very reason. It’s like a little mini yoga pose. Use it or lose it, take your wins where you can.
Round-Public435@reddit
Bad hips that will both be replaced this year - I've been using a sock puller and shoehorn for a couple of years now. They've become my morning buddies.
minicpst@reddit
This is what I was thinking. 48 years old and I can do it on one side, but ask me again in a few months after the other hip is replaced.
Round-Public435@reddit
I can't do socks & shoes without some sort of assistive device, and just this week, I discovered I can no longer cut my toenails myself, either. That part is very annoying, because I don't like anyone to touch my feet - at all. I'm going to have to pay a foot doctor to trim my nails, and just have to grit my teeth and deal with him touching my feet.
I would go to a nail salon to have them trimmed, but I want it done correctly and in good conditions. We don't have much in the way of nail salons here that I would trust.
DaisyDAdair@reddit
I’m fairly flexible and I never could do that 🤷♀️ Never really tried though TBH. Years ago aunt broke her pelvis after falling whilst trying to hop into her panties and since then I’ve never tried as it seemed unsafe 😂
suburbanplankton@reddit
I usually don't, but I still can. I test myself every couple of weeks just to check my balance.
I'll be 59 in August.
Clevertown@reddit
About 5 years ago I started practicing socks & shoes & tying while balancing on one leg. It was hard and took a while, but I can do it. Also, full squats to feed the cats helps. Just keep trying.
KrinkRobbieZ@reddit
Socks?? I wear slip on sandals! On the rare day that I must wear shoes and socks, i have to plan extra time in the morning cause its quite the scene trying to reach my toes to start, then bending backwards to pull them on?? I pulled a muscle just going thru the steps mentally!!!
Mugwumps_has_spoken@reddit
wait - people put their socks on standing up? Why?
CityCabCat@reddit
I’ve done my shoes that way as an adult but only because you have to take them off at places/homes
CityCabCat@reddit
This. Never have I ever put my socks on while standing
rangeo@reddit
Even as I kid I never did.... I've never tried.
Send help if you don't hear from me in 20 minutes
magseven@reddit
I can only recall one time ever doing it standing and I was in a rush.
GuitarHeroInMyHead@reddit
Single leg balance is one of the biggest indicators of our overall health. It shows how well your nervous system, muscles, and sensory systems are communicating. It strongly relates to neuromuscular aging, longevity, and reduced fall risk. It is one of the reasons yoga exercises are great - because they focus on balance.
Work on it - well worth your time.
Mugwumps_has_spoken@reddit
this is also insulting to anyone with congenital things that affect our balance. Our overall health could be amazing - except we have shitty balance.
GuitarHeroInMyHead@reddit
Obviously, some folks have congenital issues and those are exceptions. The choice to be insulted is on you.
Mugwumps_has_spoken@reddit
the choice to make blanket statements on health is on you.
GuitarHeroInMyHead@reddit
No one made a blanket statement. It is fact that balance is important - specifically as we age. If you have some sort of issue with balance, then that is an issue you have go address or deal with. Balance problems - for whatever reasons you have them - will cause other issues as you age. If you can't fix them because they aren't treatable, then I hope you find ways to live with it. However, your feelings about the statement don't make it less true. The risks of falling because of balance issues increases as we age - regardless of why we have a balance issue.
We need strong, healthy hearts to live longer as well. Some people have lifelong defects with their heart that prevent them from exercising so their heart health is impacted. People have to accept those things and do their best. It doesn't mean it isn't a health problem - it is. It is just not one they can fix.
Balance is, by and large, something you can work on. Of course there are always exceptions to that. But getting "insulted" when that is pointed out and true for the majority of people is just a weird reaction and frankly childish reaction.
Frosteecat@reddit
I cheat. I discovered that my rough area rug was a great aid in getting my socks on as I sit on the bed.

HandshakeOfCO@reddit
I have literally never put on socks while standing up. You’re all psychopaths.
notevenapro@reddit
Im with you. Sit down, make sure feet are clean, put socks on.
Oiggamed@reddit
That’s besides the point
Icy-Cardiologist-958@reddit

Oiggamed@reddit
Sorry Nana
GuitarHeroInMyHead@reddit
But we will be long-living psychopaths!
omnired44@reddit
Your mama
BarefootMarauder@reddit
I can (turning 58 next month). But I'd like to see someone do it while balancing on a slackline or paddleboard. Video proof required! 🤣
chatterwrack@reddit
I have to strain to do it even while sitting. My hammies are steel cables
Mr_Grumpy_Pant5@reddit
Of course! And I attribute that to years of hack sack! I once beat a field sobriety test because of this particular set of skills 😆
THSSFC@reddit
Huh.
I never thought of that as contributing to the one time I passed such a test, too. (Undeservedly, to be sure). I just remember feeling dead sober the second I saw the lights. The field test felt like child's play.
But that was in my hacky sack phase, so, maybe?
Mr_Grumpy_Pant5@reddit
One of the tests the officer had me perform was standing on one foot.
THSSFC@reddit
"Now, I'm gonna throw this beanbag at your feet..."
Mr_Grumpy_Pant5@reddit
"Okay...now, at the same time, smoke this cigarette and complain how Metallica sold out.....Well, you can go sir. Have a good night."
THSSFC@reddit
Literal lol.
Jerking_From_Home@reddit
If I didn’t have to put on compression stockings I could still do it standing up…
SkibidiBlender@reddit
Depends. Did her husband come home early?
Happy_Confection90@reddit
Sure, no problem. Shoes too.
When I was in my late 30s my mom watched me put on my shoes and said she was surprised that I could balance on one foot while putting on a shoe still, and warned that I wouldn't always be able to. That caution had somehow bothered me more than most aspects of aging. I'm definitely not looking forward to needing to be seated to put on footwear 😕
Winter-eyed@reddit
Sometimes.
Parking_War_4100@reddit
I’ve already learned 2 things today on Reddit. Half the population stands up to wipe and half stays seated. And half the population stands while putting socks on and the other half sits down.
WalnutTree80@reddit
I'm 56F and I often put socks and shoes off and on at my back door when I'm dog walking, without holding onto anything.
But I'm not sure that's any kind of achievement though. Were we doing that when we were much younger?
I'm still a distance runner and I'm double-jointed, so flexibility is something I'm used to, but honestly it's probably safer at all ages to do socks and shoes while sitting down.
Aernak@reddit
I can. I’d be scared if I couldn’t.
CanSpice@reddit
This is a wild post, it feels like I’m the only one who’s always put their socks on while standing and can still do it.
Starbuck522@reddit
Myself, I don't recall ever doing it even once.
I don't know if I can. I don't see any point in it, at any age.
CanSpice@reddit
There isn’t a point in it, it’s just how I do it?
gargolito@reddit
You still use socks?
Soundtracklover72@reddit
I have to at least put my hand on something while lifting to put the sock on.
Usually sit though because I’m a klutz along with being 53 and not in great shape.
The-Manque@reddit
I put my socks on by throwing them up in the air and doing a roundhouse kick to get my feet inside.
It takes me eight hours to get dressed every morning.
THSSFC@reddit
Chuck Norris died for your shins.
sergeantorourke@reddit
When you can do it with compression socks I’ll be impressed.
StreetFriendship1200@reddit
LOL
PeterPunksNip@reddit
Wait, you guys didn't sit to put on your socks? I never did it any other way.
JollyGiant573@reddit
Why take the chance? I wouldn't try this at 15 not going to try it at 54.
schwelvis@reddit
Not a problem for me. I live at the beach and haven't worn shoes and socks since last August.
Icy-Cardiologist-958@reddit
Definitely cannot do that.
theBananagodX@reddit
Hell, I never could.
lasorciereviolette@reddit
I can. Start doing yoga, people! You need to stay balanced & flexible.
sfdsquid@reddit
I make it a personal challenge. It's pretty much the most athletic thing I do aside from walking. I used to dance ballet and pride myself on my ability to balance. I should've been doing yoga all these years but I thought it was too hippie for me. As it turns out, standing on one leg for more than 5 seconds without falling over is punk af.
Alternative-Law4626@reddit
Try closing your eyes and standing on one foot. (Hint: have a wall nearby, you’ll need it.
RustyDogma@reddit
It's HARD!
Alternative_Sort_404@reddit
Same - so when I can’t do it, I’ll know something is changing. I have noticed that some days I seem to have better balance than others. Not sure what’s different, as I have a pretty regular schedule…
Individual-Trick3310@reddit
Wait, leaning is bad?
sickboy6_5@reddit
yes! i can still get fully dressed standing up.
oh, it's sad that's a thing.
TheFeistyKnitter@reddit
Same as OP. Not gonna worry about it.
silvermanedwino@reddit
Yoga helps with this.
Bubblemuncher@reddit
This or Pilates. You owe it to yourself. Start slow.
silvermanedwino@reddit
Yep!! I struggle with balance while in class 😑. But at home I’m a pro!
RustyDogma@reddit
I'm like that too. Doing it in class I fall more often. It helps to pick a focal point to stare at about 6" below your straight gaze.
MatchMean@reddit
Or standing up on one foot while doing upper body exercises in strength classes
Grannypanie@reddit
I can but would rather just sit.
Tall-Yard-407@reddit
Dammit! Now I gotta make room for that fact in my head. What do I do to fix this? Yoga?
Wooden-Quit1870@reddit
63yo, I can but it's getting iffy.
BWWFC@reddit
the funny thing is... the danger these days is pulling my lats and/or neck muscles. may be doing something wrong. anyway, thankfully i normally find some socks in my sheets. so when i do, put mis match ones on under the sheets before making my 3rd bathroom run. adapt and overcome.
laughingpuppy20@reddit
I can. But, I also do yoga everyday. :)
blackcloudcat@reddit
Anyone in our generation who can’t do it (excluding those with various medical issues) really should do deliberate work on their balance and mobility.
Starbuck522@reddit
I have never done it. But, I can see that it's been good for people who happened to be doing it!
I am not in bad shape, but I have never done this and so it seems to me it would put my hand on a wall if I were to need to not sit.
electrodog1999@reddit
50 now for me, I was diagnosed with MS 8 years ago so stopped trying to stand putting socks on. My doctor wants me to work on my balance so I use golf while I still can to stay flexible, I’ve moved close to a course I might try walking again but until I’ve played it a few times I’ll be in a cart.
JCo1968@reddit
I also make sure I get on the ground and get back up a few times during morning stretches and exercise.
Siren_of_Madness@reddit
I can't, but a major back surgery and another one on the horizon have made it difficult to bend that way. But goddammit I try!
formercotsachick@reddit
I mean, not my knee length compression socks, but regular ankle socks I can.
Pilates can be a great way to improve balance and strength as we age. My mom is almost 77 and has fallen more times than I like to think about over the years, and I don't want that to be my future.
spitfish@reddit
Dear fellow old people. Start exercising. Don't just walk from kitchen to living room to bathroom. Get up and move around. Lift heavy things, and not just your arses off the couch.
Signed, Fellow Old Person
Dangerous_Strength77@reddit
I can. But I don't like to talk about it.
obhect88@reddit
Bold of you to assume I ever had the balance and coordination to put on socks while standing.
youngkpepper@reddit
Same. Out of curiosity I gave it a go; I can do it, but why? As far as I can recall I've always sat on the bed to put socks on.
Mueryk@reddit
Seriously. I could probably do it but why would I bother
funsk8mom@reddit
I can but at 55 I’m still coaching figure skating so my balance and flexibility is still good
THSSFC@reddit
I can.
Sometimes.
SnowblindAlbino@reddit
I just did it, in 45 degree chill too. But I hopped a couple of times on one foot in the process, it was 615am and I was a bit bleary still.
Ouakha@reddit
Can do no problems but rather sit. The morning is reluctantly faced on a chair with coffee.
I do a bit of longboarding and have a balance board.
RubyRoze@reddit
55 and not only can I, but sometimes I even sock, shoe, sock shoe!
CanSpice@reddit
Shoes inside the house? Yuk.
worstpartyever@reddit
Who are you, Michael Stivic?
pthalio@reddit
i'm sorry, but you are a psycho, lol
eyeballburger@reddit
I can, but why?
migraine24-7@reddit
I've always had hypermobility in my joints, not to the extreme of my siblings who have been clinically diagnosed with it but yes. So even when I was young and more physically fit, I took precautions when putting on clothes, especially shoes. Now even more so, but I continue to stretch and help not injured myself as much as possible.
Aveeye@reddit
I take my socks OFF without sitting down, but I don't thinking I've ever, IN MY LIFE, put socks on while just standing.
Marigold1976@reddit
I mean, I sit while putting my socks on. It’s usually morning and what’s the rush. The bed is right there to sit on;). But my balance is still good. I’m up and down in various squat type moves because I’m constantly in the garden digging in the dirt.
Zimke42@reddit
I can do it, but I do a lot of yoga. Otherwise, I'm sure it would be dang close to impossible.
lovethyself1@reddit
Yoga for longevity! But now that I started uses compression socks at night, have to sit 😆
abstractraj@reddit
No problem. 55 in July. But I was playing flag football until 51
shitty_advice_BDD@reddit
Why would you ever put your socks on this way?
Oiggamed@reddit
I still have excellent balance. No problems here.
emmadonelsense@reddit
Brag 😂
Oiggamed@reddit
The grace of a ballerina. 😂
Old_Goat_Ninja@reddit
I could but I don’t. I don’t think I ever did honestly, I’ve always sat down.
moseley101@reddit
Tried the other night with mixed results :/
MistyMtn421@reddit
Socks and shoes! 54yo and no special exercise routine. Just an active, physically intense job. But I have always had good balance thankfully. I can stand on one foot for quite awhile.
Glum_Manufacturer232@reddit
I still can but wobble more (60). I can still bend over and tie my shoes without sitting down. I’ve always been pretty flexible but I can feel the decline every year.
nb6635@reddit
I try to get socks that are large enough to slide my feet on the carpet backwards to slide them off my feet without bending over. I can then put them in the clothes hamper with my toes.
YouMustBeJoking888@reddit
I'm older GenX and can do it, but it's because I swim and bike A LOT, so my legs are pretty solid, despite some knee issues. Hoping it lasts. 😄
small-gestures@reddit
No joking, I keep seeing new “studies” that say that type of balance is an indicator of longevity and is something your supposed maintain. (sorry if I am bringing down the room)
TurboLicious1855@reddit
Me! And I can get down on the floor into a sitting position and back up again without using my hands.
lurkertiltheend@reddit
Why would anybody do this haha
Regular_or_BQ@reddit
I think the bigger question here is sock-sock-shoe-shoe or sock-shoe-sock shoe.
lurkertiltheend@reddit
Sock sock shoe shoe for sure
Dense-Consequence-70@reddit
I can but oddly I can put one foot toes forward with my heel on the other knee, but the other foot has to go toes pointing down with my ankle on the other knee.
nonotburton@reddit
I don't think I've ever tried.
dylangaine@reddit
Without sitting down? What is this, Y2K?
m0nkeyh0use@reddit
My balance is shit nowadays, so not me. Bonus: am fat now.
Thinking of doing yoga or something to both help with the flexibility and the balance.
Mellema@reddit
I took yoga my senior year of college because I needed an elective and it was considered an easy one if you could get in.
That ended up being the best class I ever took. Over thirty years later and I'm still using what I learned.
rostoffario@reddit
Funny, I was just thinking about it this morning. I can still do it! I'm a bit wobbly, but I still got it!
2paqout@reddit
Yes. I still can, but im choosing to sit a lot more now. Also, now there's a couch in that room, that wasn't before sooooo
Sea_One_6500@reddit
Not since having my second knee replacement. Maybe in a few months from now, but I don't have the rotational ability yet, and my balance is still a bit off. I can still touch the floor in a forward fold though, so there's that.
FlippingPossum@reddit
I can but it will take a while. I only know because I do this dance while hiking alone sometimes when I get something in my shoe. Otherwise, I'm sitting down. 😆
disastrous_affect163@reddit
Dude, I was in the hospital recently and I was struggling to get my sox on. They brought me an assistive device that you put the sock around, and then it has tabs you use to pull the sox up. I remember thinking to myself, how damn pathetic am I, I have to have an assistive device to put socks on. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I guess in the end, the fact they make these, means I'm not alone. 🤷♂️
JT-Av8or@reddit
I can. I’m actually still pretty much the same shape physically as I was in my 20s. Obviously a bit slower and weaker, but overall the same. Unfortunately everything hurts all the time.
EcoNorfolk@reddit
Yes - every day. If you can’t and still a Gen X you need to have a word with yourself and take action now.
Regular_or_BQ@reddit
This is why I bought a TRX for home workouts the day they announced the covid lockdown.
sprocket1234@reddit
You have to keep moving now or it's only going to get worse. Start slow, put socks on by leaning on something. When you get out of a chair don't use your arms or hands, just your core muscles. I sit on the floor everyday just because, to play with dog or watch a TV show. Then get up. I do this at the recommendation of instructor at gym, this really helps. Then if you ever fall, you have been using those muscles so you'll be able to get yourself up easier
Duke-of-Glenmont@reddit
I lift weights 5 days a week, sometimes 6. 2-3 days are leg days. I don’t think standing while tying my shoes will get me to invalid status slower.
PollutionZero@reddit
I CAN, but I've never done so, even as a kid.
In my 50s, spent a lot of time/money at a chiropractor stretching me out. Could NEVER touch my toes before a couple of years ago (when I started going). That REALLY helped.
(It's not just back cracking, it's muscle manipulation/stretching, more like an athletic therapist).
Shut_It_Donny@reddit
I don’t recall ever even attempting to do that. Why would I not just sit down?
Infamous-Yak2864@reddit
💯-have never put on socks while standing...even as a kid...
Adventurous-Win8275@reddit
I try to do it every day. It helps core strength and balance. Which gets more important every day.
Important_Top_2740@reddit
I can but you should hear me !@#$%& while I fo the yoga that makes this possible
Paperwife2@reddit
It’s actually easier for me to do it standing than sitting now that I’ve had multiple spine surgeries. It cracks my husband up.
AngelHeart-@reddit
No but to be fair not something I’ve ever been great at.
TheReadyRedditor@reddit
Not socks, but I put on my pants yesterday without hold on to anything. 😆 My balance is crap, so I counted it as a win.
Attjack@reddit
I have no trouble standing on one foot while putting on my sock.
Lost-alone-@reddit
Yes! Strength and balance trained, along with stretching. I want to be able to move confidently and consistently forever
InternationalRent626@reddit
I am not sure why anyone of any age wouldn’t just sit down to put socks on.
NotYourScratchMonkey@reddit
I can today but just after Covid I couldn't.
And it didn't have anything to do with Covid per se, it was the inactivity that I experienced during that lock down that took a really big toll on my fitness. I have consciously worked on my fitness and movement since and part of that is (don't laugh) practicing balancing on one leg or if I can put socks on without leaning on anything.
Marathon2021@reddit
A fun little "hack" I once heard to get better at core balance and strength ... is to kind of do "Flamingo" teeth brushing.
You're supposed to brush for 2 minutes, right? Do the first minute standing on one leg. Do the second minute standing on the other. Do this every night for a few months, and your balance will get better.
RustyDogma@reddit
Yoga, pilates, balance classes, weightlifting. My father went through this starting in his early 50s and then couldn't walk without a walker by his mid-60s. This is reversible if you don't get to the point it destroys your joints.
nativecheese@reddit
Came here to say this. I do yoga 3 to 4 times a week so I don't go down the same path as my dad and grandfather.
Pleasant_Garlic8088@reddit
I've always sat down to put my socks off, since I was like 4 years old. Now I sit down to take them off too, lol.
bjb8@reddit
Forget about socks what about trimming toenails?
SorchaRoisin@reddit
Trimming toenails while standing is insanity.
Corgilicious@reddit
That’s living dangerously.
mommagawn123@reddit
I put my socks on standing up once. I slipped a disc in my back doing it. I was 17. Never again.
Bastyra2016@reddit
I better not get stopped by the police in a random roadside DUI checkpoint. I can stand on my right foot and hold my left foot off the ground for 20+ seconds. But I can’t stand on my left foot and do the same with the right. I bought one of those balance boards and I’m going to work on improving my overall balance.
I can still mostly put on socks standing up. That said I’ve nearly plowed my head into the wall trying to put my shorts on….
Corgilicious@reddit
Is it that board that has like a large rubber band spanning across it? How do you like it?
InvincibleButterfly@reddit
I have only ever sat down to put on socks and shoes.
ohb78@reddit
Don’t think I’ve ever put on socks standing up
VisualEyez33@reddit
I have never, even for a moment, considered putting on my socks while standing up, to be a normal or rational thing to ever attempt.
wetwater@reddit
I don't think I've ever done this unless I was very young.
Regardless, I injured my knee at 19 and wouldn't have been able to do it from that point forward. I can balance on that foot if I have something to touch to steady myself but I'm not putting a sock on the other foot.
angelaelle@reddit
Always. It never occurred to me that it was a big deal to still be able to do this.
turtle0831@reddit
I don’t think I ever could lol. I can still do it standing up but I have to be propped up.
trouble0322@reddit
If you keep yourself in shape, eat well, and don’t use a lot of the crap people Say is safe, you won’t have issues like this. I can. I also still walk miles a day, garden, and dance. If your body is falling apart, it’s because you didn’t take care of it.

Pretty sure children of today aren't gen x.
Monday0987@reddit
Who said children of today? There are gen x children who did not make it to adulthood.
qisfortaco@reddit
Thanks, i am aware of the indiscriminate nature of death.
But overall, the other commenter is correct, and your comment was a bit obtuse. Most people don't move enough as they get older, and the more you move, the more you hold onto the ability. 🤷♀️
Abject-Kitchen3198@reddit
It's both I guess.
in-a-microbus@reddit
I can but I don't.
Mostly because I have taken to wiping the crumbs and dirt and hairs off my feet before putting my shoes on

Nope. I sit. I did start (occasionally) do some core exercises to help with that.

alegna12@reddit
I don’t know that I’ve ever tried that in my life.
2boredtocare@reddit
I can! It's a point of pride. lol. But I also do yoga off/on, so that helps a LOT with balance.
SergeantBeavis@reddit
Google the “Old Man test”. Shoes and socks without losing your balance.
moneyman74@reddit
Put my socks on while standing up? I've never done that in my life that I can remember
Ih8TB12@reddit
I was going to say the same thing. Unless I was in a nasty visitors locker room, that had a bench that gave away splinters for free, sitting has always been preferable method.
The splinter thing happened twice in high-school. Rural PA had some interesting facilities at some schools.
Abject-Kitchen3198@reddit
Neither did I, but I just tried and I can!
_ism_@reddit
Never could? If i ever tried to put them on standing up it took took long and I lost my balance. I spend a lot of time making sure the toe seams are positioned right.
Snugrilla@reddit
I just kinda stopped wearing them honestly. It's a pain.
TalFidelis@reddit
Does hopping around a little count?
SergeantBeavis@reddit
Abject-Kitchen3198@reddit
Extra points.
nabt420@reddit
Practice people! I'm in the same boat, but I've been practicing!! I saw that infamous "old man test" where you put on your socks and shoes one foot at a time while standing, and that was a wake up moment for me. I balance each morning now to try to be able to do that.
MaineMan1234@reddit
I’m an inline speedskater, regularly skating 15-40 miles at a time, so I have excellent ankle and length strength and stability. So yes I have zero issues standing on one foot to put a sock on the other.
I did the Northshore Inline Marathon in Duluth MN last Fall in 1:22 for the 26 miles.

I have become scared how hard this is so I’ve just started a new home training routine to get my flexibility and balance back. Never stop standing on one leg, hopping, all that.
Fluffymanolo@reddit
I never could, but I've always been top heavy.
Neither_Remote_4818@reddit
Use it or lose it. I shave my legs on one leg, never use my hands to get up off the floor, try to challenge myself to squat lower and longer than I did a few years ago. I’m 50, so maybe I’m “too young” to know yet, but I’m holding on to as much as I can for as long as I can. I love feeling stronger and more flexible - it makes me feel better.
I have MS, and couldn’t walk well for a few months 8 years ago, so it is very precious to me now that I can. I do yoga every day and it helps everything. Most of the people in my classes are older than me.
You can do things to help/keep flexibility and balance- don’t give up!
shan68ok01@reddit
I've never been able to do that, gravity and my wonky hips hate me. I'm doing good if I can put my pants on without sitting down.
voteblue18@reddit
I’ve never put my socks on standing up. Even before I had a ruptured brain aneurysm that I now have lifelong balance problems from.
I’m a woman so maybe this is a guy thing? You balance on one foot and put your sock on the other? I don’t even think my husband does that but maybe he’s not your average guy.
CoastRooted@reddit
Me! ☺️I make it a point to never sit down when putting on socks or shoes. Once you start sitting down, it’s a slippery slope. (I’m also very active and intentionally work on balance and mobility.)
This-Assumption4123@reddit
I haven’t been able to do that since my firs try husband broke my back.
MaineMan1234@reddit
Hopefully he is in jail
ToodleButt@reddit
Only way I wear socks is if someone puts them on me. I have marfans and associative hip arthritis combined with spinal fusion prevents me from reaching my feet at the end of my disproportionately long legs.
grateful_john@reddit
I can do it despite two bad knees but I can’t think of a reason I would have to.
Alternative-Law4626@reddit
I can do it. Not my standard way of doing it, but did it yesterday.
Impressive_Syrup141@reddit
Once I dropped about 30 pounds I was able to again.
hopelesscaribou@reddit
This is our sign that ones balance gets worse with age.
You can literally tell someone's age by how long they can stand on one foot with their eyes closed.
Practice your balancing folks, it will prevent future falls.
APWildlife@reddit
Still can. Shoes too.
Objective-Minimum802@reddit
Always stay in shape. I can. Cursed be the day I won't be able to.
catladyofseven@reddit
Depends on the sock…. regular socks definitely, but my compression socks, not a chance.
TardisTexan@reddit
One thing I’ve learned now is keep practicing getting up from a chair without using your hands. Keep those muscles strong
HopPirate@reddit
I learned shoe changing from Mr. Rodgers. He never did it standing.
But also, being knock kneed and preferring calf socks put me off that idea even when young.
I will say that making involuntary groans and having my gut in the way helped convince me to get in shape. I’m in a better place with my weight and such now than I was in my 30’s.
soulguard03@reddit
Mr. Rodgers for the win. I always sat down. All my life. But not to brag, I can still standing-toe touch. Actually, I can put the ridge of my palm on the ground.
But seriously. I sit... always have.
Iwentforalongwalk@reddit
I can. I exercise all the time and do balance work.
Pavementaled@reddit
Me too. But I don’t think I ever put my socks on standing up. I think that was always a sitdown thing, yeah?
LovesDeanWinchester@reddit
I've ALWAYS sat down to put my socks on!!!
Atomic_Gumbo@reddit
I’ve made it a challenge to keep doing it. I try to see how long I can stay balanced but I always have something to grab or lean on if it gets stupid.
We get more sedentary as we get older, then we lose our core strength and poof, there goes balance. Fight it. Your life could for real depend on it one day. I saw a Gen X lady fall and face plant in Lowe’s garden center last week. Took three people to help her up.
CrazyCatLadyNL@reddit
It depends on the day. If I don't do some stretching with my hips and legs, I won't be able to lift my right leg high enough to put on my sock. Balancing on one leg while trying to put on a sock is a challenge.
im_dead_sirius@reddit
I'm not sure I ever really did. I remember kneeling or sitting on the floor to do it as a kid, at times.
Now that I think about it, I've changed my clothes outside in winter time. I was sweating under my snowsuit and in my heavy snowboots after a day of work.
So yeah, I can change my sock standing on one foot.
shanty-daze@reddit
I can not remember a time I have tried. I guess I have a new quest this morning.
VerdantPathfinder@reddit
Neeewwwww Achievement! You have .. for some ungodly reason ... decided to do something you never did before just to spite the aging process! Rewaaaard: Not being embarrassed by falling over in the attempt is the reward.
skateboardnaked@reddit
That started for me in my late 30's. All those past broken bones from skateboarding probably.
Trelin21@reddit
I wear compression socks. It’s a process.
That being said mobility is great. I can stand on my own hand, with straight knees.
It’s all about the shimmy of compression up the fat calves.
Val32601@reddit
The knee tells me, you better not even try.
Icolan@reddit
Socks and shoes. Stop skipping leg day, or start doing leg day! Bodyweight squats first thing in the morning will help strengthen your legs. Get a balance pad and start practicing.
HumanExpert3916@reddit
I can, but don’t.
VerdantPathfinder@reddit
I actually do it intentionally as a "balance practice". I also have a balance board for my standing desk. I'm really afraid of losing my balance in the coming years. Tried Tai Chi but didn't stick with it
ward_bond@reddit
Still? I never have before.
kingForOneDay@reddit

gnarwhale79@reddit
I just stand close enough to the wall that I can do an emergency lean.
gusto_g73@reddit
I have never once in my life tried to put my socks on while standing.
SamePhotographs@reddit
My chiropractor told me about 5 years ago "you sit down to put your socks on now" as a statement telling me that this would be the best choice. She was right. I almost fell twice the other day getting caught up in the underwear I was trying to don. Seems I sit down for that now too.
YogurtclosetParty755@reddit
I can still do it. I attend a yoga class that has a lot of balancing poses & it really helps. I’ll keep at it because I don’t want to be like my Dad, who has very limited mobility. Keep moving my friend!
thejake1973@reddit
Yoga is the reason I can still put my socks on standing.
tattooedlabmonkey@reddit
I can. No issues
metricnv@reddit
Socks? Just another unnecessary comfort in a world full of gratuitous pleasures. /s
Only in the last year or so have I noticed some difficulties. I don't have to sit down or lean on anything, but my balance isn't as good and my flexibility is less. I'm probably 15 lbs. overweight and bending over squeezes the air out of me.
Friendly-Advantage79@reddit
I had an oopsie that tore my distal bicep tendon. Which made me workout first with the MD, then alone in the gym. Now, you can't PT just one bicep, you should do both. Now when you're at it you should workout arms entirely. But it's stupid to do only arms, right? So now I'm a gym bro by accident. I'm 51 and I can put my socks on. Not on purpose.
Duke-of-Glenmont@reddit
I have never even tried. What kind of animal needs to stand on one leg while putting wool on its foot? A cold flamingo?
doubtfulisland@reddit
I've been a flamingo as far back as I can remember. I stand one leg to do all kinds of things especially putting on socks and shoes.
pantstoaknifefight2@reddit
Something as mundane as brushing your teeth is a great time for calf extensions and one legged standing
Grouchy_Situation_33@reddit
I stopped wearing socks. Problem solved.
sergeantorourke@reddit
I’ve never put socks on standing up. It just seemed to make more sense to sit down.
olily@reddit
Me, too. I was surprised to see so many people put on their socks while standing. Shoes, I'll put on standing up. (If they're slip-on, obviously. I wouldn't try to stand and tie laces. And just that thought is cracking me up.)
Bahlore@reddit
I absolutely "can" but the amount of times I've thrown my back out doing it, I no longer even attempt it. I sit down every last time.
Fit-Reality-2872@reddit
I have a reconstructed foot and a reconstructed knee on the same side -that knee doesn’t bend far enough to allow putting a sock on standing up…. and then it doesn’t allow for standing on it with enough stability to put the sock on the other one standing up! So of course I sit down!
archedhighbrow@reddit

I can still. Visit AthleanX on YouTube. Jeff has great tips for fitness routines for men > 40.

Single leg balance becomes more and more important as you age. Work on it now and you'll be in much better shape in 10 years.
Eukairos@reddit
Doing drinking bird/single leg deadlifts will help a lot with developing and maintaining single leg balance.
GuitarHeroInMyHead@reddit
Spot on...ask any doctor about balance as you age and you will learn how important it is.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
I can do it standing up but usually I am sitting in the entry way on the bench so I put them on right before I put my shoes on. Which I can also do standing if need be.
Independent_Sock_213@reddit
I had a ladder kick out from under me while scraping a second story window to prep for paint and suffered a life altering calcaneal fracture. I couldn't afford surgery or PT, so I just laid on bed for four months while it heeled into a severely misshapen imitation of what it once was. I had to hold myself up in the shower to wash and dry myself for years. I walked with a limp for years. Every day was painful throughout my entire my because my balance threw off my spinal alignment. I slowly built my muscles back up and now train with kettlebells and a treadmill. I make it a point to avoid sitting to put my socks on, so I can continue to strengthen the muscles needed to be able to continue doing it. It took a long time to get there, but yeah, I can put my socks on without sitting and usually do.

In fact, when I first met my wife and I saw her doing that without sitting down I was shocked.
dontwannaparticpate@reddit
I can but have focused on making sure my body can move well into old age. I run, strength train and stretch. I have great balance and can get up off the floor on each single leg with no hands. No loss of any flexibility either, I can still pull one of my legs behind my head. I try to focus on corrective posture as well, my mother was always 5’5” but is now shorter than me (I am 5’2”).

I have POTS (dizzy spells and increased heart rate issues). I do work on balance, just not while trying to wrangle a sock. I don't need a fall injury. I practice balance safely where I can safely grab for stability if my PPTS causes issues.

What the???…. Are you trying to break a hip??
Seriously though, I don’t ever remember standing and putting on socks, not sure why you would. That said, at almost 61, I can bend straight forward and palm the ground in front of my feet and balance well enough to be able to put a sock on while on one foot. Still don’t though.
iamalext@reddit
I can see why it might be a challenge for some, but I see it as a clear indication that these folks need to work on their flexibility and balance, both crucial to a higher quality of life as we all get older. I've been putting socks on while standing since I've been able to put on socks. And if this is difficult for you, you may just want to determine what exactly is making the task difficult for you, as a way of determining what can be improved. Flexibility and balance both improve through consistency rather than overall effort. Practice both of those things daily and improvements will continue to show up, even when you are much older.
