Sarcasm at its finest

Just wondering if everyone our age is just sarcastic AF, or is it just me and my social circle?
What's even better is when people don't get the sarcasm and they just don't know how to respond 😂🤣
Honestly, I don't have much to say to begin with, but if I couldn't pepper well placed sarcasm in my conversations, I probably would never talk at all.
Is it just me? I grew up in Los Angeles so I could be brain damaged from formative years, just sayin.
wcboy65@reddit
Deep-Attorney1781@reddit
The struggle is real. Sarcasm is my second language and the husband takes everything literally 🙄
elkchasermt@reddit
Ever get into a sarcasm duel with a Y or Z? They don’t even know what hits them.
ComprehensiveShip720@reddit
I speak sarcasm with a neutral yet dry accent.
introvertednurse75@reddit
I am quite fluent in sarcasm. So is my husband.
wyohman@reddit
I don't believe in -isms or -asms
jen_esse@reddit
So no sarcasm and no orgasms. Sad day.
wyohman@reddit
I don't believe in the tooth fairy either
Feisty-Cloud5880@reddit
Queen of sarcasm here. I actually teach people sarcasm. lol I have a disabled person that I have recently connected with She's 30. She's developmentally disabled. We've been hanging out about 6 months now. The other day I said something to her,she looked at me and smiled "that's sarcasm!" She also got me a few days ago!!! LOL I was so proud. Can't get her to swea though. I'm 59 F, raised in Massachusetts. I think maybe it can be a regional thing too??
battlesong1972@reddit
Sarcasm is absolutely ingrained in me
Dull_Bat9518@reddit
Sarcasm is a major coping mechanism for me! But I only really use it with people that know me enough to 'get it '😊
TripMaster478@reddit
I am definitely sarcastic af. My kids still don't always get it.
TakitishHoser@reddit
I saw a meme a while ago that reminded me of myself "My sarcasm game is so strong that sometimes people think I'm stupid."
TakitishHoser@reddit
Me sarcastic. Never!
Yes, often.
SQWRLLY1@reddit
Basically, if I'm just openly sarcastic with someone, it's fairly safe to say I consider them a friend... and the more shit they dish back, the closer of a friend they are.
ChoakIsland@reddit
Only bust the balls of the ones you love.
SQWRLLY1@reddit
I mean... kinda. 🤷♀️
ConscientiousDissntr@reddit
I think sarcasm is low brow and hostile humor. I don't engage in it.
Rillion25@reddit
Only degenerate reprobates engage in sarcasm.
ChoakIsland@reddit
Thank you.
Dada2fish@reddit
Yeah, the older I get I realize those who rely on sarcasm a lot are just angry people in disguise.
ku_78@reddit
I’m guessing OP is using the term loosely. I hate when I’m called sarcastic when I’m not being sarcastic.
Tomfoolery, satire, being a dumb ass… all preferable.
ChoakIsland@reddit
Yeah. It's just you.
Dada2fish@reddit
A little sarcasm goes a long way. Unfortunately too many people don’t know this and make it their whole personality.
electropunk42@reddit
“I’m not being sarcastic. Noooo … This is the way I ALWAYS talk!”

Owhatabeautifulday@reddit

LostDepartment4512@reddit
Sarcasm is the only way to speak. I get a kick out of it sometimes when you see it whizz past their heads. They look at you sideways.
More_Law6245@reddit
I'm as sarcastic as they come but I would also like $100 for every time I've experienced those awkward moments of silence when people were not sure how to take what I've just said. Most of the time it's meant as tongue in cheek but people perceive it differently
Unfortunately being extremely sensory and somewhat intelligent my brain engages slower than my mouth sometimes .... well actually most of the time.
jen_esse@reddit
This is the way.
cre8majik@reddit
I am, and people think I am serious every damn time.

Zesty-B230F@reddit
I'm very sarcastic. I've tried to turn it down a little. My wife gets it, but isn't the same level.
Bubbly_Following7930@reddit
I'm very sarcastic.
WATAMURA@reddit
I have to make an effort to hold back the Sarcasm in fear of sounding like an asshole.
I grew up with MAD Magazine's Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions. So my urge to answer stupid question with sarcasm is strong. ... and let me tell you, people ask really stupid questions.
Also constant euphemism, deadpan rhetorical questions, sly sexual innuendo, and expressions from films that only by brothers seem to get and the rare other Gen-x.
bald_eagle_66@reddit
No shit, Sherlock. What do you think?
GenerationX-cat@reddit
🤣
swigs77@reddit
i am Gen-x and from Long Island. I have achieved zen level sarcasm. It unfortunately never translates well in text form so most people just think I'm an asshole.

🤣
CzarGuy111@reddit
Always been that way it’s my sense of humor I blame it on Chevy Chase as he was a fav as a kid
jungle4john@reddit
It is a first language in my family growing up and I have kept the tradition alive and well.
Affectionate-Cow3737@reddit
Yep
ElJefe0218@reddit
What do I look like? One of those guys that goes around saying intelligent things just to confuse the masses? Sarcasm sounds like some kind of sexual position where you pretend to like it by making animal sounds. Dad, were you watching animal planet in bed last night? No, why the hell would I, yes I was in fact watching animal planet.
Able_Boat_8966@reddit
Of course I am, Mad magazine built a healthy dose of Smart Ass in me at a young age.
crankedmunkie@reddit
Janeane Garofalo, Alison from the Breakfast Club (pre-makeover), and Daria were my idols
platypusandpibble@reddit
Ummm, well yeahhhh.
Seriously, I am absolutely sarcastic. It works well when employed with innocent wide eyes. It confuses people. 😆
Spiritual-Computer73@reddit
I am fluent in sarcasm. Learned it from my silent gen dad.
Ih8TB12@reddit
Me and my sisters are very sarcastic but we got it from my Dad. Could be generational but in our family it was a learned behavior.
PizzaWhole9323@reddit
Well duh! 🤣🙄
LadybugCalico@reddit
Not only am I sarcastic but so is my 14 year old daughter
la_winky@reddit
I thought that was a genetic trait of our generation?
Vegetable-Orchid1789@reddit
What do you think
Left-Nothing-3519@reddit
Pretty sure sarcasm is the official language of Gen-X.
I’m teaching my son - he’s AuDHD, and body language, micro expressions tone etc is completely outside his natural skill set.
It’s good when we can both giggle like naughty kids about an inside joke.
Fit-Yogurtcloset3023@reddit

Jason_TheMagnificent@reddit
I actually reversed my sarcastic nature as I entered my forties, I was a sarcastic prick for the first half of my adult life, now that I am in my fifties I'm trying to take the taoist approach of not giving any f*cks
epicenter69@reddit
I’m very fluent in sarcastanese.
JeannieBugg@reddit
I use sarcasm occassionally, but not very often.

bsensikimori@reddit
When did society lose the ability to spot sarcasm?
Every time I see a "/s" I break out in hives
kobuta99@reddit
Tone is definitely lost in text, but also the proliferation of true a-holes and trolls - especially online - has caused confusion.
Quirky_Operation2885@reddit
I'm from the Philly area. Sarcasm is the primary language around here.

HavBoWilTrvl@reddit
Why? What could we possibly have to be sarcastic about?
IamGypsyStarr@reddit
I always said I was raised by the King of Sarcasm in the Land of Cynicism.
I had to break up with my sister - in- law because she was so fragile. I’m like, dude it’s not with malice that I say what I do, it’s just nature. Cmon dead baby jokes all day was just one thing that formed all this awesomeness.
Even as a former US Marine, she could not suck it up and drive on.
Now shits awkward for her at family gatherings. 🤷🏽♀️
unknowable_stRanger@reddit (OP)
I got fired once for a dead baby joke
IamGypsyStarr@reddit
☠️ That’s kind of funny though, I hope it was just teenage money and not tryin to to make a livin as a grown up.
Disassociated_Assoc@reddit
Oh hell, of course it’s just you. 🙄
/s (for those of you that are far too literal)

It’s only good when I get sarcastic with one of my supervisors…. surrounded by a bunch of ‘Lenials…
She and I laugh.. they all stare at me, confused.
Good fuckin’ times.
CompanyOther2608@reddit
I’m trying to cut back, because younger people don’t get it and think I’m just being mean.
Concentrate-Upper@reddit
Oh but aren’t we….? Being mean? It’s NOT our problem if the younger people can’t handle sarcasm. It’s not being mean, it’s just being feisty af!
CompanyOther2608@reddit
Eh. Maybe, but with time I’ve developed more openness and empathy to other ways of moving through the world. I save sarcasm for people who thrive on it and meet other people where they are.
Otherwise_Object_446@reddit
💯 this!
BearcatPyramid@reddit
What's the difference between sarcastic and snarky? I'm told I have the latter down pat.
Catskillschick@reddit
Sarcasm is my love language
Ok-Street7504@reddit
I've always been sarcastic publicly and privately if the situation calls for it.
Duran518@reddit
I don’t understand how people cannot be sarcastic. It’s a wonderful coping mechanism and a great way to enjoy life, depending on how it’s used.
Fabulous_Law1357@reddit
I agree. Not having any parents around to help guide me, the fear of nuclear bombs destroying my city daily and Nancy Regan interrupting my cartoons to tell me I need to be careful because I am going to be offered crack and heroin every day. It was the only way my 10 year old brain could deal with the pressure.
Duran518@reddit
Exactly! At a very young age, we learned quickly. Daily refreshing the skill. I also think it keeps us sharper.
Ageofaquarius68@reddit
Duh. But yes it's super annoying when younger ppl look at me like I'm being a bitch. No, this is just how I talk.
solemn_penguin@reddit
I have two colleagues who are young enough to be my kids. I think one of them has never even heard of sarcasm let alone understands it
Concentrate-Upper@reddit
I never faked a sarcasm in my life!
DarkElegant8156@reddit
Yes just yes !
wannareadrandomstuff@reddit
Yes, and I really enjoy it! Most people in my circle appreciate it. But at work, I used to lead a global team. A guy who worked in the Netherlands said that he does not get my sense of humor and likely neither do his colleagues in Asia.
Brave-Chain2703@reddit

Oldebookworm@reddit
Sarcastic AND cynical
blondvet@reddit
Same.
JimC29@reddit
I'm definitely still sarcastic, but my daughter passed me a long time ago. I always taught my kids it's better to be a smart ass than a dumb ass.
AZNM1912@reddit
Do you think? (Sorry, that’s sarcasm…. lol) Yes… our generations second language is fluent sarcasm. (So I was told my by my then 90 year old grandmother 10 years ago)
MinusGovernment@reddit
I try to use it as much as I can.
ColdHandGee@reddit
Sarcasm is my middle name!
Pavementaled@reddit
Millennial's came up with Hyper-Sarcasm, but I don't think that Gen Z understands it, and it is a bit above our Gen Z heads sometimes.
PeriwinkleWonder@reddit
Sarcasm is so lazy. Our generation is better than that.
potliquorz@reddit
No, taking everything at face value is lazy and naive. Language allows communication but just because someone said something does not make it so. I've noticed young people accept what is said at face value and don't get sarcasm or bullshitting in general.
Oldebookworm@reddit
I have a niece that used to take everything I said at face value. She was a believing child. My son, not so much
Pure_Floyd_Smernitch@reddit
Yup
It's just you

sammclemens@reddit
Was in a long relationship with an Xennial. Xennials seem to have less of a sense of humor and thin skinned. Well, at least it was that way for us! LOL. Yeah, we are way too sarcastic and other generations just don't get it. Now try being a 1990's Marine with a Gen X sarcastic sense of humor. We just can't help it

I was raised in an intensely sarcastic family. My wife grew up in a very literal family, one that didn't have much of a sense of humor, frankly. It took a while, but I've converted her and she can now be VERY sarcastic. She thought I was just "mean" for a while there at the beginning...

Cleverironicusername@reddit

NekoTheSpookieCat@reddit
My primary language is sarcasm. I did have to learn how to dial it back to deal with kids, though. Forever seared into my memory is my son asking me “Mom, are you sarcasting now?” 🤣🤣🤣
Cleverironicusername@reddit
The sarcastic reply could be yes or no.
ExtraAd7611@reddit
I used to really appreciate and be amused by sarcasm, and often still do, but I think it's gone too far, especially when used on the Internet. It's contributing to the anger and partisanship of our society.
omfgwhatever@reddit
I think it's because sarcasm doesn't translate well into text. Usually, you need to hear the voice and facial expressions.
ExtraAd7611@reddit
That's most of it. Also, I think sarcasm can be most effective when used in moderation and I cringe when I read or even hear someone use it too much.
GenerallyVerklempt@reddit
Sarcasm is negativity with a smile. Be better.
Cleverironicusername@reddit
Big bullshit smile, “Sure.”
LadySlayinem@reddit
Sarcasm is GenX ultimate coping skill. It's OUR thing. While every Gen can use it, only one ever really mastered it. If you hear some scathing sarcasm from the youngers-they heard it or learned it from GenX.
Rootin-Tootin-Newton@reddit
I’m way too sarcastic. We survived the transition of generations and possibly helped “improve” generational relations.
Silent to boomers, who knows what took place, probably wasn’t good. Boomers didn’t get a lot of good parenting, left us alone for the most part, but ended corporal punishment for the most part. X to millennials, showering kids with attention started.
Sarcasm was how my family expressed love because they were so uncomfortable about it. For me it’s like a reflex, I’ve really had to watch it. Sarcasm has a very limited place in our society now.
Now, if I could only stop blowing up about stupid shit…

newwriter365@reddit
Sarcasm is the middle class form of aggression.
I ditched it years ago, it projects insecurity.
homezlice@reddit
100% correct. I don't think most people know that sarcasm implies contempt and superiority - "Sarcasm is the use of irony to mock or convey contempt. It involves saying the exact opposite of what you actually mean, usually with a biting, humorous, or critical tone, to make someone look foolish or to express annoyance."
