The being enraged by a YouTube ad vs the 30 second infomercial is such a real feeling. Although what enrages me about the ads on YouTube is that it's not a choice (perse-side note I hope that's the right spelling for perse), they just play them whenever they want to (even for some channels that don't have monitization). They just play a random 5/15/20 second commercial based on what they think you want to see, and it's usually in a part of the video where you've sunk down deep into the flow of watching the video. "Back in our day" when there was a commercial, it was usually predictable and shows accounted for advertising breaks in their format (sitcoms only being 22 minutes of writing and filming to account for opening/closing credits and commercial air time). But YouTube said Fuck your comfort, here's a commercial for some shitty product you don't want but based on your viewing and what the creator said is cool to show their audience and what we think is going to give us money, enjoy! At least when we stayed up passed the national anthem and all that was left was Ron Popeil, Billy Mays, and the Sham Wow accent guy we could choose to sit through the 30 minute infomercial. And we knew what we were getting! Some bubbling baffoon who didn't know how scissors worked, or some lady who didn't understand why her 1 tiny off brand single ply paper towel would NOT pick up the gallon of wine she spilled all over her floor! We could watch as the infomercial host waltzed in and not only SOLVED the problem but gave you a second set of items FOR FREE! They showed you 7 ways from Sunday how to use their product (and the secret 8th way their not allowed to share but will because *conspiratorial wink* you're "in the know"). And then, AND THEN just as you're about to dial that 1-800 number to snag your very own LIMITED TIME OFFER, they shout, "WAIT, THERE'S MORE!" And they show the not one, not two, but THREE products all while they throw in some extra bonus attachments (because it's not extra unless it's bonus!), AND show you the secret 9th way to use the product. All this for the low price of 1 product (plus postage and handling for the all the products). With a money back guarantee, that if you don't like their product, you can send it back within 60 days for a FULL REFUND no questions, you can even keep the free gift as a thank you for trying their product. It was predictable and it was lovely and I, being a teenager of the 90's will take an infomercial any time over a random algorithm YouTube ad jammed down my throat in the middle of my video watching. (And please do not get me started on the interupting of shorts/reels/tik toks for advertising...not the kind you scroll into, but the kind you're watching a short/reel/tik tok and in the MIDDLE of the short/reel/tik tok they show you an advertisement, ABSOLUTELY get FUCKED!). I think I need a nap now, this raised my blood pressure. I gotta go lay down. Lol.

My mom died 12 years ago at 58. My dad still has a ton of her stuff. When my brother and I tried to help him clear stuff out (now over 10 years ago), he said he was holding on to it as he bought those "collections" for her and they were an investment and would be worth money someday. I labelled the box, "junk to throw out when Dad dies." He still has the box (and label) and laughs about all the stuff we will have to throw out when he dies (but also says he will live to 100 so I might be able to talk him into throwing stuff out in the next 23 years).

My mom and dad used to give us a 50 cent piece. So hubby and I started giving our kids a 50 cent piece (got them from my dad), and a dollar or two depending on how many singles we had. I don't care that some parents gave $10 or $20, we do not adjust for inflation in this house.

So what's your overall opinion on AI?

Posted by cellshock7@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 822 comments

Diligent-Resist8271@reddit

Serious question: do you think that the "grunt work" being done now by AI will remove the historical knowledge base of future "senior level human thinking?" My husband is also IT (Network Engineer) and he doesn't like it. We speak all the time about the missing link between programming your own computera to touch screens and how there is an in-between space right now (or more accurately-several years ago), where people don't know how their computers work and the difference between an "app" and "software" and how people know how to turn a computer on but they no longer know how to troubleshoot problems. We are both 46 and we find that our nephew (29) and our kids' (13 and 14) peers don't have basic computer knowledge and they are not being taught it in schools. We've spoken about how even college kind of dismisses some of the historical knowledge of computers and how they were developed. Side note to hopefully explain what I mean better: Husband shared a story with me about a family who always had ham for Easter. The daughter (Jenny) was home from college and wanted to help her mom make the ham. Her mom (Barbara) told her to cut the ham in half, put it in the tray, cover with glaze, and put it the oven. Jenny did as she was told. She did it for years, eventually even teaching her own kids how to prepare the ham for Easter (cut in half, put in tray, cover in glaze, and put in oven). One day, her grandchild asked, "why do you cut the ham in half?" She didn't know. She asked her own mom (still alive but very old). Her mom didn't know either, but asked her sister (Alice-also very old but still alive). Old Aunt Alice explained that THEIR grandmother cut the ham in half because the oven was so small it didn't fit as a whole ham, it was too tall. So she cut it in half to fit in the oven and that knowledge was only passed down as "cut ham in half" but not the WHY cut the ham in half. Now the family has much bigger ovens and didn't need to cut it in half, but they had been doing it for so long but never understood the why. We talk about computers and what's going on like that now. Procedurally people know what they are doing, but the why is always missing. And from what I can see, AI is going to end up like that (we do this thing because it's step 3, not because we should do this thing). Hopefully that makes sense!

So hilariously, my mom DID have one of those weird head things for when she was rinsing my hair. It wasn't a detachable. It was just a foam runner circle with a hole in the middle for the head. And somewhere I have a picture proving it because she used it also as a Halloween costume for me (I was a sunflower so I just wore it around my face with a green sweatshirt and sweatpants). But it was yellow (like that 70's yellow even though it was like 1982/83). Yes when I was older I did get washed like the second kid, and I watched my husband wash my girls like that when they were younger (he had so much more patience for their bath time than me).

I feel that. I stopped complaining at 40. My husband still tries though. My family was Italian/Irish Catholic so we had a big drunk Christmas Eve party every year and everyone would sing to me but my very religious grandfather would only let us sing to me AFTER we sang to Baby Jesus, and then I had to cut and serve the cake because all adults were too drunk to do it. Don't have to do that anymore.

I'm a week before 1980 (the 24th), so forget X, Millennial, Xennial...you feel the pain of your birthday so close to Christmas. You and I forgotten, forgotten. (Unless of course you do not celebrate Christmas, then nevermind and carry on). And yes Ren and Stimpy was Nickelodeon, but Pinky and Brain was The Animaniacs on the WB. My parents prioritized TV so even when we didn't have money for buying school lunches, we had money for cable (although NOT Disney-now that's rich people TV!).

Not hearing "titty lifter" before I much prefer that over "over the shoulder boulder holder." If bras were named like barbarians in a D&D campaign there would be some great ones, "Breath Constrictor" and "Rib Stabber" and "Shoulder Ripper" and I grew up knowing "Cross My Heart" as the name of a bra company (or at least a style of a brand).

Yes. Sorry. Stuffy the word. It feels...dare I say it, buttoned up? Just too formal of a word. And some women do refer to their shirts as tops and their pants as bottoms but I prefer pants and shirt (but now I too might enjoy a pantaloon!). And so sorry, my spelling is terrible but I did mean brassiere not brazier. Brassiere also feels like a formal way of addressing the under things. I prefer bra but also not a fan of the word. And as I'm sure you can tell by my ellipses...I'm on the other end of the Xennial (Gen X by year, 1979), but find I have slightly more in common with some of my millennial friends (hence the Xennial, much more nuanced). And I have fond memories of Ren and Stimpy (which weirdly remind me of Pinky and Brain but grosser).

I think I feel the same about panties. I hate that word, it's underwear (boxers if you're a dude (but also not a dude wear what you want) and wear them) but underwear is gender neutral and doesn't give me the willies when I say it (and yes I recognize that willies is a choice but it's a word like "ick" without the full "ick"). Stockings is for the things that go all the way up (pantyhose if you will, don't hate that word as much). Pants are pants, slacks is weird too (agree). I do enjoy a good pantaloon and trousers feel too formal. Blouse is similar as slacks but not as stuffy (or more stuffy depending on context), just call it a shirt. And brazier is a never, nope. Additional side note, my 13 year old daughter's friend said I talk like I have a English language plus subscription, because I use a lot of words. I said thank you, because I think words are so fun! I mean pantaloons! Pantaloooooooons!

I was at Girl Scout Murder Mystery Dinner. It was an end of year celebration for the troop. It was also my last year of Girl Scouts, our troop disbanded after 8th grade. I remember we were all watching on the TV and just kind of abandoned the dinner (even the actors were focused on the chase).

Blackboards vs whiteboards

Graduated '98. Blackboards/chalkboards up until high school. But we had a computer lab in middle school school (not just a computer on a rolling cart, a classroom filled with computers), and when I was leaving middle school the elementary school got a computer lab and a rolling cart for video shooting and editing. My high school had a couple of computer labs, classes for those labs, and then my senior year they got a STEM lab which they taught CAD. But still blackboards/chalkboards.

At what point does "you don't look that old" become an insult?

I think it fits in the same category of, "you carry your weight well." I've heard that my whole life. I don't care that people know my weight or age, it's whatever to me. But I was having a conversation with a coworker several years ago. While chatting, I mentioned how people tell me I carry my weight well, she said it was so rude to say something like that to someone. I said, I have found it an odd saying but try not to think one way or the other about it. Later in the conversation I mentioned adjusting my diet to help get to a healthier weight and told her I weighed 170 lbs. She exclaimed, "no way! You don't look like it...you carry your weight well." She said that last part in a small voice, realizing what she did. We both laughed because it is an odd saying.

I was told, you don't pick your grandma/grandpa name, your grandkid does. And it was never truer than with my dad. He was going to be grandpa, and my daughter (the oldest grandchild), couldn't pronounce it (didn't want to pronounce it), so she called him Pop pop. All 4 granddaughters call him Pop pop now. He loves it.

Yes because I remember a couple of times in highschool SAME thing! Like Carrie my girl! If Austin "thinks" it's you because Sammie is wearing your perfume, Austin is dumb as a box of rocks and you deserve better! I kept asking my mom if Sammie is still trying to get Austin away from Carrie and she would just say, "yup," and I would roll my eyes and move on. The first time, cinema! I loved it! But after 4 years, cut your losses and move on! Lol.

OMG. I remember Austin and Carrie and Sammie and Lucas and the whole shenanigans. I remember in the 5th grade being home from school sick and Sammie was trying to get Austin to LOVE her, and Lucas was trying to get Carrie to give him the time of day. It was crazy. Then, in the 8th grade, home sick for a week, and you know what, same story line, different haircuts. It was then I knew, this whole daytime soap operas was not my thing.

This out of town lady with crazy red eyes just asked if I was a god. What should I tell her?

How many of you feel like you're caring for your kids and have parents who are like another set of kids?

Diligent-Resist8271@reddit

When I was 31, my husband (32 at the time) and I had our first kid (daughter now 14), a month later my mom was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. I sat in one of her many appointments with my newborn managing her care because anytime a doctor spoke to her about her cancer, she would just start crying and stare into the middle distance. The doctor (who I knew from work) commented that I really was the "sandwich" generation. I managed her care (appointments, insurance fights, short and long term disability, and eventually hospice) for 3 years before she passed. My husband's dad died of a heart attack 9 months after my mom was diagnosed. We became caregivers to his mother who had manageable MS (I remember my second daughter's first Easter in 2014, when my husband and I were each on our cell phones with family members because our mothers were being admitted to hospitals-mine in NY for dehydration associated with her chemo treatment and his in Florida because she had gotten into a car accident visiting her sister with a car we told her she couldn't have because she couldn't drive anymore). He went to Florida to manage the hospital stay and make medical decisions and I stayed home while my dad went to NY to handle my mom's hospital stay (she was visiting friends and family in NY and we all lived in NC, also despite having a husband my asked me to help her and I did it until she passed). Now husband and I have two (soon to be teenagers-14 and 12-but 13 in less than a week!), and we take care of his mother's medical needs and he also manages her finances (and she lives with us-yay me!). His nephew also lives with us (his dad is my husband's brother and doesn't help anyone but himself), and I help my dad with most of his medical, husband is tech support for both of them, and I help my dad with his finances sometimes. Funny story: I told both his mom and my dad that they were getting punch cards for 2026 and every month they didn't have a bank scam or problem with their credit, they got a punch in the card, and after 12 punches they could have an ice cream or pizza party! It's all exhausting.

Married 17 years. No pushing china from parents but I know I wanted it. I've used it 4-8 times a year since being married. The holidays, our anniversary, and now birthdays (even if we eat chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese on them-currently my 12 year olds favorite thing). I say if you don't like them and won't use them, sell or donate them. But I am also of the mind, use it. Use it for whatever you want. Special holidays, Taco Tuesdays, Birthdays, whatever your heart desires.

Indoor cats. That is exactly how I describe my two daughters. They are indoor cats. I jump at the chance when they want to "hang out" with friends. My youngest (12 now but 13 in 13 days!) has discovered hanging out at the mall with her friends, and I am HERE. FOR. IT! It's a very small mall with a lot of empty stores and a handful of food court offerings, but they just want to hang out together and not at a friend's house and I will gladly drive her to meet friends (and sit in the food court while she wanders with them, I may want to give them freedom but society still requires the parental sacrifice of keeping an eye on them).

Got a bidet for my husband (but obviously it's for our bathroom), he loves it! I have to research and get another one. The stream is too strong and actually irritates me from the scar tissue if giving birth. I know I can get a gentler one and have been looking (also I am looking for one with a warming function-husband is content with cold, aggressive water shot right up there! Good for him). So to answer your question, we have one, husband ('79) loves it and uses it, me ('79) loves the idea but our current model is not one I use.

About a week after getting my license my parents bought a car off a friend for $100. The radiator constantly needed water (carried several jugs of water in my car), and the driver's seat was broken so I needed an egg crate to prop up the back seat. Then my mom took me to the Walgreens and said, "the manager is waiting to interview you, here is your application." Started that weekend and had to pay my own gas. Drove around all summer with the heater on and when it finally died, my parents got me another cheap car from a friend. Had that Tempo until my sophomore year of college. I loved that car (and still paid for my own gas).
