What first names are very Xennial?

Were there other names where multiple people in your homeroom class had the same name?
Girls: Lisa, Nikki, Amy, Beth, Jennifer, and Kelly
For boys, I'm thinking Chris, Steve, Scott, Jason, Ryan, and Eric
inabighat@reddit
Way too many Matts
ambasciatore@reddit
I have like 8 Matts in my life. It’s enough already with the Matts.
pwehttam@reddit
44 and my name is Matt. I don't know anyone with my name
Poison_Ivy_Rorschach@reddit
My boyfriend in kindergarten was named Matt. He’d be about 45 now.
railmanmatt@reddit
Hi again.
Poison_Ivy_Rorschach@reddit
I wish, sadly he died of a drug overdose about 20 years ago.
railmanmatt@reddit
Sorry to hear that. I just had a high school friend die as well. It sucks.
ineptplumberr@reddit
Geez, somebody started a little early and wasn't afraid of Cooties
Dee_Buttersnaps@reddit
I also had a kindergarten boyfriend named Matt. He dumped me to go out with Lisa and Corrine at the same time.
avalonfaith@reddit
Mine was Stuart. My first kiss, in the bamboo trees after "wedding Wednesday" at the local hippie & very German school. Guess I could start filing as married. We never had an "unmarried Thursday" group,
SWLondonLife@reddit
At one point in my high school year group, I had 6 Matts. Out of 48 guys. Class of 1996.
bridge1999@reddit
Had so many in my class, we just called them by their last name.
j48u@reddit
That's actually weird considering it was one of the top 3 boy names for like 8 years straight around your age.
thepuncroc@reddit
I know about 12 Matts that are 44-45 right now.
If you need some introductions, I'm sure they'll let you into the clubhouse.
who_even_cares35@reddit
I had two other Matt's with the same last name as me in highschool. I don't think I was ever the only Matt in any of my classes and my best friend growing up was also a Matt.
mmoonbelly@reddit
GiraffeCalledKevin@reddit
I am 41 and I’ve dated two Matt’s.
Good eggs usually.
avalonfaith@reddit
Whhhaaaaatttt!?! How'd you get by with that. The Matt's I'm thinking of are older than me. I'm also 44. So they'd be genXers for real. I did have a lot of older guy Matt's in life, though.
mattchewy43@reddit
Sorry.
Rob_LeMatic@reddit
Not you, Matt, calm down. It's those other Matts.
mahdroo@reddit
I legally changed my name from Matt to Mahdroo. I just NOPED right out of this one.
username32768@reddit
"Mahdroo" is pronounced "Matt" though, right?
mahdroo@reddit
Closer to Matthew
Eikthyrnir13@reddit
Not your fault. You're good my dude.
reds3reds@reddit
Is Chewy your nickname? I graduated around the time of a Matt with the nickname Chewy
mattchewy43@reddit
Kinda. I had a coworker call my Mattchew, when I was in high school and it kinda morphed into Mattchewy.
But I never really went by anything than Matt. A couple people I worked with call me Chewy still.
avalonfaith@reddit
A singular Matt is cool. Multiple Matt's, just, not cool.
ambasciatore@reddit
No, you’re cool.
EducationalBread5323@reddit
Just 8?
avalonfaith@reddit
So done with Matt's. Since junior high.
Global-Jury8810@reddit
Seemed like there were three at one point in my class.
SilverIsFreedom@reddit
So many Matt’s that I started going by my middle name.
Neither-Principle139@reddit
I would, but it’s Todd… that’s a stripper’s name.

My brother went to school with two Matts who had the same last name so one randomly decided to go by “Russ”. No part of his name contained Russ, I don’t know where he came up with that one.

Hello, are you my SIL?
No-Cell-3459@reddit
Anything is possible.

My BIL is Matt (Matthew) and my husband's middle name is Matthew.
To make it even more fun, my husband's first name is the same as Matt's dad.
eggs_erroneous@reddit
I have a set of cousins who are twins: Mike and Matt. He speaks truth.
Fodraz@reddit
Does their last name start w a G? I knew twins w those names
LarryBuds@reddit
I have twin cousins Matt and Mark.
Fosad@reddit
I, too, know Matt and Mark Xenniel twins
InsideCelebration293@reddit
My mom also had twin cousins names Mike and Matt.

Loingsign@reddit
So many people confuse my name with Mark. 9 out of 10 people say "what was your name again, Mark?"
No - Matt.
Odd
againandagain22@reddit
Maybe this thread kinda explains it. People have too many of those in their lives and mix them up.
Also, the whole New Testament thing.
crazydude5000@reddit
I’m a Mark and everyone thinks I said Mike. Nobody is winning.
OKStormknight@reddit
Had that happen when a job I had created my computer ID... They were convinced my name was "Mark." When I changed roles in the job they made "New" IDs and realized their mistake. It was two years later where I became "Matt" in the system.
Thankfully they didn't screw up my paychecks.
Loingsign@reddit
Good story, Mark!
metmerc@reddit
I am a Mike. My brother is Mark.
For Michael/Mike, though, the name was the #1 boys name in the US for decades.
El_Guapo_Supreme@reddit
I have so many friends named Matt and Chris that we just called them all by their last name.
Neither-Principle139@reddit
Same. Or I go by Mat the W.
JohnnyWeapon@reddit
The Matts have now all gotten together and mutually agreed that there will be no more Matts.
Mission accomplished because NOBODY is naming their kid Matthew anymore. I haven’t seen a child Matt since I was a kid.
Insomniac_80@reddit
Too many dads named Matthew these days, if you named a kid Matthew starting in 2010, he would be teased for a dad name!
Neither-Principle139@reddit
Ouch. I feel attacked.
anonymoose_2048@reddit
I was one of 4 or 5 Matts at my high school.
Neither-Principle139@reddit
Went to HS with 750 kids in my grade (9th) and at least 20-25% were Matts.
Neither-Principle139@reddit
Coolest name ever! But, yeah… too damn many Matts.
Fair_Blood3176@reddit
I knew a Matt. He and his brother David, came from a Dick. Best friends I've ever had. RIP DICK. You did well.
CheesyRomantic@reddit
I always really liked the name Matthew (and Matty for short). But then I went ahead and briefly dated a Matthew and that name option went out the door. Lol
Chris968@reddit
In middle school for me there were close to 10 if not more Matthew’s in my class. As a Christopher, another common name from that era I feel that. Even my cousin is Matthew.
Lunar_Canyon@reddit
I'm Gen X amd Matt is the most common (in the USA) name in my cohort. Didn't take long to recycle that one I guess
VenusBlue78@reddit
TooManyMatts is literally the password for our March Madness pool at work.
GreenZebra23@reddit
There are zillions of us. As I explained to a gen Z person recently, if there is a white guy around my age, there's like a 25% chance he's named Matt
inabighat@reddit
I worked in a place with about 120 employees. We had 15 Matt's. It was ridiculous.
ausmaid@reddit
At one point, we had 10 Matt's at work (IT).
Nicotheintern1@reddit
My Matt SUUUUCKS now.
Meander86@reddit
39 y/o Matt here… thankfully it’s less common of a kids name these days. I was one of three Matts in my grammar school grade.. the other day I met another Matt around my age and he said “Let me guess you drive a Toyota Tacoma too”… yup. Were we created in a lab or something? My mom said my name was supposed to be Shane, but was changed to Matthew at the last minute. Often wonder what my life would’ve been like as a Shane.
Insomniac_80@reddit
The Matt lab!
who_even_cares35@reddit
My mother literally opened the baby book name and chose the number one name "Matthew" because she hated how rare her name "Melinda" was.
Dear Mom, There is this thing called a happy medium.
AEternal@reddit
r/matt would disagree (as would I!)
That said, I have many Matt and Mat friends. I rather like it.
stlredbird@reddit
For some reason I read that as Mantis and I thought “damn that is a cool ass name.”
Fosad@reddit
Dr. Mantis Toboggan
6BigZ6@reddit
Bible names. Matt, Luke, Joseph, John, Philip, Thomas, Andrew, Peter, James.
SuperRocketRumble@reddit
Still in the top 50 most popular names.
GreenZebra23@reddit
Really?? I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, it's a Biblical name and has existed forever. But I guess it's like maybe your kid Debbie or Crystal, it's so tied to a certain generation by this point
murakamine@reddit
My best friend and i actually made a pact to never hook up/get in a relationship we anyone named Matt ever again. Not only is there a LOT of them, they seem to share a common interest in making their partner miserable…
Adelaide_Farmington@reddit
My brother is a Matt. Born in 81

I had a lot of Lynns and Julies in my classes. Lots of Erics snd Jasons too.
knivesofsmoothness@reddit
I knew so many Sara/Sarahs. So so many.
Melissimasaurus@reddit
TOO MANY SARAHS
AMugOfPeppermintTea@reddit
I had teachers who had to say "Sara 1/Sara 2" when there were two Sara sat right in the same row so they'd know which one he was calling on.
Mememememememememine@reddit
I was in class with a Sara, and I’m Sarah. So they called me Sarah H. Not my last initial.
Flaky-Garlic7890@reddit
At one point, there was 6 Sara(h)s in my grade, including me. It was madness! lol
_awk_girl_ward_@reddit
I'd stop turning around when I'd hear my name called. Friends would get annoyed when they were actually calling for me, but you try hearing your name called 10 times a day, and it's not you they're calling for! Also, when I used to go to department stores, I'd always hear a parent calling for a Sarah, lol
Mememememememememine@reddit
I’m a Sarah and had a roommate named Sarah lol. Then it wasn’t so bad bc if SHE was calling my name, I knew it was for me. When we had a third roommate - that’s when it got annoying 🤣
Flaky-Garlic7890@reddit
Yes! I know how you feel lol. It’s not as bad anymore but this past season on my daughter’s softball team there was a girl named Sara. For 11-12 year old girls, it’s not as common I feel. I didn’t realize my daughter’s name was as popular as it was when we named her. She will be the Sara of her generation. Her name is Emma. lol
Mememememememememine@reddit
My niece is Emma 🤣
woodenmittens@reddit
In school I had 4 Sara's, out of 20 people. I've worked at places with 3+ Sara/h's too. There's so many
_awk_girl_ward_@reddit
That's fucking weird. Not even "Sarah with an H?" I'm a Sarah, so they always used my last initial because ofc there were always like 5 Sarah's in one grade.
Mememememememememine@reddit
We were both last initial D. I didn’t think it was weird. It was like a jokey way of making a thing out of the H.
InvestmentMain8414@reddit
My sister is a Sara...Im still annoyed by the Sarah spelling
Mememememememememine@reddit
I’m Sarah. When two Sara/hs meet each other we’ll ask this question and if it’s not the same we side eye each other like “hm I see” and silently accept that we will never be friends.
greenhillin@reddit
Yesssss! Xo, Sarah
Mememememememememine@reddit
Team SaraH!
_awk_girl_ward_@reddit
100%, if you know, you know. I always say, "H is for awesome!" Either you get it or you don't.
seffend@reddit
100% accurate
La_Croix_Life@reddit
This is so real.
Sara and Sarah are two completely different breeds. IYKYK.
Pumperkin@reddit
This is totally reasonable and believable.
mountainsanddeserts@reddit
My sister is Sarah and I think Sarah without an h looks weird—like it’s missing something. Funny how that works.
_awk_girl_ward_@reddit
Totes agree, haha maybe I'm biased
greenhillin@reddit
I was one of 5 Sarah/Sara’s in my fifth grade class. The teacher made us all use first + middle ie Sarah Catherine, Sara Lindsey, etc. I was the only ‘just Sarah’ because my middle name is weird 😬
lemonheadlock@reddit
My elementary school was full of Chris B, Chris G, Chris J, Chris T, etc.
Unable_Apartment_613@reddit
I played on a middle school basketball team where four of the five starters were named Chris.
gypsyjacks453@reddit
Oh the Chris’s! Yes, we had so many Chris’s.
NotJustMyDisorders@reddit
3rd grade we had four Sara(h)s, two even had the same last initial
LittlehouseonTHELAND@reddit
That’s so interesting, where I lived Lauren was THE name, lol. We had 4 Laurens (3 with the same last initial) in my class and 3 in the other same grade class. I never met a Sara or Sarah until college. Born in 1982.
Go_Corgi_Fan84@reddit
We had Lauren/Laura and Sarah/Sara
Insomniac_80@reddit
Same here, loads of Allisons and Jennifers, but maybe one Sarah per grade!
ssssobtaostobs@reddit
I feel like for a while on the Bachelor there were 2-3 Laurens per season.
llammacheese@reddit
And their middle names are all Elizabeth.
Duranonymous@reddit
Otherwise middle names were: Marie, Lynn. Nicole, Michelle, Beth(or Becky).
Crafty_Accountant_40@reddit
There were 3 Sara(h) Elizabeths in my hs class of 100. Ridiculous. And like 5 Jennifer Lynns.
Blackberry518@reddit
lol my middle name. and I have a sister, Sarah 🤣
Electronic_World_894@reddit

pumpkinhead9000k@reddit
IDK, I’ve known a lot of Sarah Ann’s
Beautiful_Cause_9600@reddit

Rob_LeMatic@reddit
I lost my virginity to a Sarah Anne. Manic pixie dreamgirl, that one.
Ok_Researcher_9796@reddit
That has to be one of if not the most popular girl's middle name there is.
Zenis@reddit
Or Marie
MissMomomi@reddit
Ha! I replied a few comments up before seeing this. https://www.reddit.com/r/Xennials/s/6APLdD6rd2

Lol those are mine and my sister's names 😂 Though she is a Gen Xer
BethiePage42@reddit
And Kate/Katie/Catherine/Cates so,so many
ArchitectVandelay@reddit

Awkwardpanda75@reddit
I was going to be named Rachel but instead named Melissa. My best friend was also a Melissa. I went by Mel and she ended up a Missy.
sar_Mc1979@reddit
Yup, I’m Sarah Elisabeth. But spelled with an “s” instead of a “z” so I’m not the same.
My hubby’s name is Jason and my brother is also Jason.
hockey_chic@reddit
I have 5 friends named Sara(h)
EcstaticMiddle3@reddit
Came here for this. 3 sara(h)s in my class. So confusing bc we all sat in the same alphabetically ordered row.
Fuckspez42@reddit
Sara seems to be having a bit of a renaissance these days. I have had 5 co-workers over the last year named Sara (all without the H), all of whom were born after 2000.
PicklesDillyPickles-@reddit
Yep, and Sarah with an “h” is the only correct spelling! Haha
Beautiful_Cause_9600@reddit
Sara with no H, because H's are
Yes, I am a Sara no H!
Mememememememememine@reddit
Came here to say this. I am one of many Sarah’s.

patient_brilliance@reddit
Very country specific. My name is in OPs list for girls but I was the only one ever and it's still not very common in Australia.
It was so fun to go to the US on holidays and finally find my name on keyrings and magnets!
Available-Maize5837@reddit
I had so many Kylies and Kellys. Sarahs were everywhere. I can't remember a single Jennifer so it seems very American to me. Had a bunch of Jacquis. Boys were Scott, Matthew, Brad.
fangirlengineer@reddit
Andrews everywhere. I was in a school project once with three of them out of a group of five. Sprinkling of Matts and Chrises and Michaels and Daves.
There were at least four Jodies in my senior year. Two Sarahs, two Kellys, one Kylie, one Kristy, three Jacqui/Jackie's, two Joannes, two Lisas. No Jennifers for us either. I'd say Louise was the most common middle name.
Available-Maize5837@reddit
As soon as I saw Louise I thought "nah, that's a middle name". 😂
patient_brilliance@reddit
We had 2 Jacquis and 2 Kristys in a class of 18 kids!

So many Jennifers. I think it’s interesting that’s it’s the Cornish version of Guinevere.
Tall-Problem-6183@reddit
Was looking for Jessica. And Jennifer. All my besties were Jessica or Jennifer. Lots of Tiffany's and Stephanie's - spelled normally. They didn't start spelling names "uniquely" until about 15-20 years later.
I never knew anyone else with my name growing up. Except a very famous - in that era - young supermodel and actress with think brunette eyebrows and starred in what we now-consider to be very age inappropriate roles and commercials. And she's almost 10 years older than me.

There was one Sonya in junior high with whom I shared a class, and there was one Erin in high school but she graduated a year after me and was in a different grade.

Old-Maintenance-8301@reddit
Might be because of the multiple spellings (Catherine, Katherine, Kathryn etc). The sum of all different spellings would probably make it rank higher
Robossassin@reddit
And occasionally Kathleen.
kathatter75@reddit
Growing up, I was the only Katie I knew. Of course, a lot of that clearly had to do with where I grew up - I grew up on the west side of Houston, near the Katy Freeway, which gets you to Katy, TX. I was born out of state and had the nickname when my parents moved to TX when I was 6mos old.
Anyway, I get to college, and there are 3 other Katies (all spelled differently) just on my side of the floor in my residence hall.

As a 1983 Kaitlin, I believe that name (by any spelling) is more of a 90s name than an Xennial name. When I was little I ran into a lot of adults (especially older) who had never even heard it before, and I never had other Caitlins/Kaitlins in my classes. But it really took off after that. I run into 30 yr old Kaitlins everywhere now.

I also was in a Catholic school so there were at least ton of Katherine/Katies so that could be part of it too.
