Anyone remember Patrick Muldoon from Saved by the Bell, Melrose Place, and Starship Troopers? He died yesterday at 57 of a heart attack. RIP

Ooof I know it’s a little ways away, but seeing a healthy looking guy drop dead in his 50s is scary
WolvesandTigers45@reddit
Not the only one lately, there have been several this year and it’s heart related issues. Think this has anything to do with steroid use to stay fit for the cameras? It’s what kills a lot of athletes, body builders and wrestlers in their 50s.
frecklefaerie@reddit
Honestly, I think it's Covid. In my unscientific understanding, it makes your blood "sticky." Unfortunately the last few years I've known some super healthy, fit folks stroke out.
Littlebirdy27@reddit
Don’t know why you’re being downvoted. Covid is proven to increase heart attack and stroke risk in people, even younger people substantially.
-Acta-Non-Verba-@reddit
Because it's Reddit.
cigarandcreamsoda@reddit
I got old school COVID in 2020 (despite isolating and wearing a mask), back when in the county would report people getting it. My heart got so bad for months after that I could barely pull trash cans to the curb. It’s worth noting that I was a runner and powerlifter in the lead up to that, so fitness wasn’t an issue. Doctors basically just shrugged their shoulders and said “that’s weird”. I had to bury my disabled dog by hand that July and kept seeing spots. Walked to another neighbor to watch a football game and spent the night chugging water trying not to pass out. Then one day, it just went away. I’m assuming that bill is going to come due one day in the future.
ominous_squirrel@reddit
Post-exertion malaise syndrome. For some people it turns into long Covid forever and for other people it lasts 2-3 months post infection
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is also exacerbated by Covid
The general belief is to not exert yourself for those two months after any Covid infection and to practice “radical rest.” People use heart rate monitors for it, such as a smartwatch
cigarandcreamsoda@reddit
See I had no guidance like that so it was the walk it off mentality. I just kept limping along and continued weight lifting throughout the whole thing. Doctors even put a heart monitor on me for awhile and said nothing was wrong
greenisgood13927@reddit
Lots of same symptoms from me. Almost instant hypertension a few months post COVID took almost 2 years and lots of medication to bring it back to normal levels.
erintoxicating@reddit
Same! My blood pressure went from consistently 110’s/70’s to as high as 180/110 like the month after I got Covid in Nov 2022. Then I started having cardiac symptoms including arrhythmias. The doctor I went to didn’t believe it could be Covid related but I AM A DOCTOR and I have no doubts.
ConstantHawk-2241@reddit
I had very similar symptoms Covid infection November 2020.
ominous_squirrel@reddit
Anybody remember how in 2015 everybody online was like “OMG this is the year all the celebrities are dying!” Every year since 2020 has been like that and nobody’s noticing
d0mini0nicco@reddit
It’s very true. It’s a vascular disease, attacks our blood vessels. With that comes increased plaque that years later results in heart attack. Neighbor had a massive MI several months after a bad bout of Covid.

WolvesandTigers45@reddit
That’s fair too. Also being former smokers, drug abusers and over eaters has a cumulative effect that doesn’t help.
spaketto@reddit
My dad was (and still is) super healthy, bikes like crazy, eats super healthy, plays sports, never smoked in his life, doesn't often drink, but worked a super high stress job and his dad died of a heart attack at 63.
When my dad was 57 he spent about 3 weeks telling the doctors that something didn't feel right and they kept saying it was heartburn related. Went to the hospital one last time and he had a heart attack in the ER and had an emergency triple bypass. That was 18 years ago and thankfully he's still going strong but stress and genetics are huge factors.
Napamtb@reddit
My dad, grandpa, and great grandfather all died from heart disease/attacks before 65. I had a physical after my dad died (2012) and my HDL (good cholesterol) was below 40. The doctor said that basically predicts a heart attack before 65. I am slender, don’t drink soda, and reduced my sugar intake. I started riding my bike and running after hearing what my doctor said. My HDL has stayed under 40, it’s never come close to 40 usually in the high 20s to 30s. My doctor said it’s just bad genes and I can’t do anything about it. I’ve heard statins make you feel like garbage.
donnadoctor@reddit
So you haven’t tried a statin?
PixelFondler@reddit
I gotta upvote you for that username. DONNADOCTOR FRIEND! DONNADOCTOR FRIEND!
countzero1234@reddit
Statins do have risks of side effects like any drug but on the other hand there are probably very few medications that have saved as many lives as statins. I know from genetics its not if but when I'll be going on statins, just the way it works.
futalfufu@reddit
My boyfriend (in his 40s) takes statins every day. He's very healthy and active. He's had no side effects, they don't make him feel bad at all, and has been taking them for years. Just thought I'd put it out there as an alternative to hearing that it makes you feel like garbage.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
God, that sucks. You’re putting everything into fixing it and there’s nothing you can do. That can’t feel good. Sending you eternal good vibes
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
My husband’s dad was a runner, ate super healthy, was really the picture of health. He had a heart attack in his 50s. Lived like an invalid for six years. And then died. It was so fucking horrible. I’m really glad you got all this extra time with your dad.
Alarming_Cat_2946@reddit
That’s a good reminder that I need to check my blood pressure 😬
lizardpplarenotreal@reddit
Cocaine is helllllllla bad for your heart?
redditshy@reddit
And brain. My friend has full blown Alzheimer’s at 55. :(
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
I don’t know — I looked him up and thought he looked pretty normal for his age. Is there specific photo that made you think this?
lizardpplarenotreal@reddit
Oof. Rest easy Patrick Muldoon, you sexy sexy tortured soul.
WolvesandTigers45@reddit
That too
LloydsMary_94@reddit
I read an article of this happening to a male taking too much testosterone as well.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
That’s possible. He looked like he used a little something extra to stay fit like he did. The cost of “looksmaxxing” can be high
Notredamus1@reddit
Get your heart checked out. Heart disease is still the number 1 killer in the US.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
Can I ask — how do you get your heart checked out if you’re not having any heart symptoms? I asked about my heart at my last physical and my doctor said I’d need a reason to get a referral to a cardiologist at my age
Notredamus1@reddit
I had to fight with my insurance to get an echocardiogram and stress test after having an episode of chest pains in my late 30s. You really have to advocate for yourself. But eventually they approved the tests and they found some minor stuff before it became a bigger issue and prescribed me medication to mitigate further damage.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
Do you think it would be morally wrong to conjure up some symptoms with my PCP? Like, I’m really not a liar, but I feel like that’s the easiest route. And insurance companies are the real fucking liars and crooks, right?
HicJacetMelilla@reddit
I got a stress test after I started having chest pains while on the elliptical (it was likely reflux, test was all clear). All you have to say for a stress test is that you started having chest pains while working out / gardening / exertion. If your BMI is high or you’re overweight, there could be some pushback because of some biases in medicine (“see if you can lose some weight then see how you feel”).
I got a heart rate monitor after reporting my heart rate kept going off like crazy while I was just sitting, and sometimes I’d feel skipped beats.
Unfortunately, anxiety about potentially having heart issues are both very very common and also typically not enough for a doctor to order these tests. If you have a family history of sudden cardiac death, and you are reaching the age that they were at the time they died, and you have an agreeable primary care doctor, they might work with you or refer you to cardiology for more investigation. The two tests I had above, though were through my primary care doctor.
Kimono-Ash-Armor@reddit
We all know that one family in which all men (and sometimes women) get heart attacks like most people get gray hair. It doesn’t matter if they run marathons or smoke 4 packs a day unfiltered, the genetics are so awful that their ticker putters out randomly.
Men are especially at risk. Women’s estrogen protects them from heat disease until menopause, and then the risk rises to that of men.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
Fuck, man. That’s my husband and I really try not to think about it. He does absolutely everything right, but that doesn’t always matter
Kimono-Ash-Armor@reddit
Early detection can help, like seeing how their arteries are, but insurance can be prohibitive despite strong family history.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
I also can’t get him to get serious about going to the doctor for anything. It’s a constant struggle. Are lots of men like this or is he just a menace?
ManWhoTalksToHisHand@reddit
We're already in the age range where people just drop dead. Fun, huh?
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
I mean…we’re not late 50s, but yes…people drop dead in their 40s too. We’re beyond the age where everyone thinks it’s senseless and crazy that someone died.
serpentarienne@reddit
It really is. Learn CPR and encourage your loved ones to do it too - these stories always motivate me to take a refresher class. It isn’t always lifesaving, but it gives people the best chance in a heart attack ♥️
AuntieCampaign@reddit
Just chiming in to add that my CPR teacher, a former firefighter, said he only had 4 saves out of 200 cardiac arrest calls. All 4 of those saves, someone on scene had started CPR.
(This anecdote is from before ubiquitous AEDs)
militant-hippie@reddit

Loving how many people here watched Days. I didn’t mention it because I wasn’t sure how many people would’ve seen it. I used to watch though
Cosm9yrelithyra13@reddit
Wait he was only 57? That hits different. Feels like just yesterday he was that smug pretty boy on Melrose Place making everyone mad. And of course Starship Troopers. He gave us the most 90s himbo energy possible and we didn't even appreciate it at the time. Rough week for childhood nostalgia.
ZipperJJ@reddit
He walked so James Marsden could run.

When my brother started at my same university, he got all these flyers from frats about which one to join. Patrick Muldoon was in a frat (not our campus) and featured on the flyer as “the man so stole Kelly from Zach!” Can’t remember which house but loved that he was used to recruit 18 years in 2003. Rest in peace, Patrick.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
That’s actually hilarious. If I stole eternal dream girl Kelly from Zach, personally, I’d still be talking about it 30 years later
Tylerdurden389@reddit
I follow Dina Meyer on Instagram and the entire cast of Starship Troopers almost always shows up for cons to take pics with fans. He looked a lot better than average guys in their late 50s. RIP.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
Right? He didn’t look sick at all. That’s what’s so scary

I remember him. Wow. 😨
Workamania@reddit
He was Denise Richard’s really good friend IRL.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
That must’ve been especially cool in the Wild Things era. Damn she was hot as hell
ConfusionOk4129@reddit
Looking back on this... Wasn't he a bit old for her?
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
He was in college. He was also her manager. So yeah, probably a smidge too old at that age. A few years later the age difference would be fine.
DBE113301@reddit
Don't forget Austin Reed from Days
Rodeoqueenyyc@reddit
I had the biggest crush on him from this! I’m so sad to hear the news.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
I would’ve included that, but I usually get the sense that this sub is predominately male, so I wasn’t sure if that would land.
PeneItaliano@reddit
He was fake Austin to me
DeltaFlyer0525@reddit
I didn’t recognize the name but as soon as I saw the pictures I was like that’s Austin!
jambr380@reddit
Yeah, my sister watched Days all the time and I had no choice but to also watch. Austin and Carrie, Lucas and Sammie. Those were good times. My sister will be upset about this one
Diligent-Resist8271@reddit
OMG. I remember Austin and Carrie and Sammie and Lucas and the whole shenanigans. I remember in the 5th grade being home from school sick and Sammie was trying to get Austin to LOVE her, and Lucas was trying to get Carrie to give him the time of day. It was crazy. Then, in the 8th grade, home sick for a week, and you know what, same story line, different haircuts. It was then I knew, this whole daytime soap operas was not my thing.
mythrowaweighin@reddit
I think that storyline (quadrangle) went on for 10+ years.
Diligent-Resist8271@reddit
Yes because I remember a couple of times in highschool SAME thing! Like Carrie my girl! If Austin "thinks" it's you because Sammie is wearing your perfume, Austin is dumb as a box of rocks and you deserve better! I kept asking my mom if Sammie is still trying to get Austin away from Carrie and she would just say, "yup," and I would roll my eyes and move on. The first time, cinema! I loved it! But after 4 years, cut your losses and move on! Lol.

Damn his shirtless scenes when my mom was watching Days were like manna from heaven for this closeted young gayling.
OndriaWayne@reddit
I was gonna add that too - during Jensen Ackles Days days when I was glued to every minute of the Bradys shenanigans.
grapecityjammer@reddit
My mom had my sisters in the early 90’s. While on maternity leave she got really into Days of Our Lives. So much so that when she went back to work, she’d tape Days on the vcr. So every evening, for a number of years, I also got really into Days of Our Lives watching the tapes with my mom. I knew him from that, he was Austin. A few years later he was in Super Troopers, and I was like, “Hey, there’s Austin Reed!”
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
Can I ask, are you a male? I’ve found a surprising number of men over the years have seen that show.
lunicorn@reddit
I don’t remember the actor. What I do remember is someone with the same name in high school who died by suicide his junior year.
My gut reaction was not how young 57 is, but how many years he did get to live compared to the person I knew.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
That’s fair to lament someone dying in high school forever. Three people died at my somewhat little school between 7th and 12th grade. I was not close to them, though we all knew each other pretty well because of the school’s size, but I still think about them to this day.
bluecyanic@reddit
I like to see this as PSA to go get your heart checked. Something like this is normally treatable and death preventable if the issue is caught early.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
I would like to see more focus on heart health, nationally. My husband’s father, mother and my mother all dropped dead from heart issues in their very early 60s. One was completely explainable due to lifestyle, the other two were fucking stunners that will never make sense based on lifestyle.
Adept-Presence-3363@reddit

Oh shit, Melrose Place, damn that’s young.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
Too young. He was five years younger than my mom when she died, and she died very young. And she was living like a lunatic with nothing to live for. I’m sure this guy was really taking care of himself.
wrxninja@reddit
I feel like so many celebrities have died or this year; I know he had a massive coronary but others with cancer at much younger age. It's like what's going on 😭
And people around me as well...someone is always passing away with cancer. It's such a weird year already on top of all the shit that's happening.
ughyoujag@reddit (OP)
I wonder if more people are dying than normal or if we’re just middle aged now and we notice death around us much more.
