Did your parents ever apologize to you for something they did when you were young?

I made it up as an easy way to explain the actual loss. :) Sounds like your dad is not emotionally available either, which is a pretty nasty one-two punch. Some people never figure out how to balance their identity with what it means to be a Good Parent (TM). And yet...life goes on, so they put on this act like it must be okay...or something? Because reflecting upon their failures isn't something they can handle. Or... You didn't starve, so it's a success. IDK. Some people just aren't cut out to be parents, they just had kids because they were supposed to. Regardless, I'm sorry, that's a shit sandwich. My approach has always been: It's not me, it's them. And fuck 'em, I'll find my own family.

Glad to be of help. FWIW, my wife went through "death of possibility" when her POS father died a couple of years ago. Zero redeeming qualities in that man, but she always held out hope that he could someday be different and then they could have something worthwhile. Dying took away that last little bit of hope and coming to terms with THAT was the difficult/sad part.

Sounds like you're mourning the death of an idea or...a wish...or even a possibility...but not a person. Death of a dream is hard and you have my sympathy there. Since you're struggling, would it help to frame it more like you can't miss something you never had, but you can still be sad you never had something? And work on it from that direction?

Common core is genuinely amazing...if you're wired for it. My son is and the way he understands math on a fundamental level is awe-inspiring. The kid taught himself pre-calculus when the teacher couldn't hack it.

Oh man, her podcast is so delightful! Play Along is half interview, half little concert. Here's the one where she unabashedly fangirls herself to death with the Queen Herself, Sarah McLachlan. https://youtu.be/GOjbj1q5ia0?si=IJysZb8E4WRyk5E8

I'd go with the 1st gen Lexus GS300. Sleek, great lines, suspensions are available and they come with a 2JZ (nonturbo, but still) to begin with.

Do Americans actually sit on their front porch much, or is that more of a movie image than real life?

I'm on my front porch right now, LOL. It's the best place to hang on the weekend. That said, we never used it until I screened it in last year; it's glorious to not be pestered by bugs.

Grew up in an okay suburb of a shitty small city, moved around a little for college, but then bought a house in shitty city about 5-8 minutes away from my childhood home. We lived there in relative misery for about 10 years (thank you, Housing Collapse) and then escaped 10 years ago now. Best decision ever, even with an 8 year old and no family around (especially now). Getting out of a place that's been post of your identity teaches you who you really are and strips away the constraints. Redefines what's possible.

They were honestly great cars with a bag wrap and normally worse ownership. But I owned five of these by choice and was very active on the message boards for a long time. I'm still looking for a clean single cam sedan with a stick.

From a value standpoint, sedans are the way to go. They're almost never the sexiest (though the pillarless hardtops are amazing, IMO), but they're always the least money for the shape they're in or the features they have. Since you're not car-literate, get anything you're serious about, inspected at a shop you can trust.

I use an 8" nakiri for all purpose prep and it's good but kind of a lot. So I can't decide if it's a good idea or stupid idea to have a petty sized nakiri, you know? Sidebar: the sweetest knife we've got is a santoku I made for my son, but it's got a hybrid chef's belly profile. Great weight and balance but a perfect slicer.

Dude, nice work! IDGAF if some people think the forefinger notch is a gimmick; it's bad ass. Tell me about the stubby nakiri? Like, how well did it work at that size? I have a scrap of expensive AF steel in that general shape and size that I'm thinking of lightly shaping and making a chode nakiri, but I'd like to know that stubby works with that form factor.

The project truck has been such a pain I had to buy a 41k miles Regal GS to get me by.

I did that at 36 and moved from the town I grew up in to a Raleigh, 500 miles away. Best thing I ever did. The people are nicer, you run into ones you know even though there's like 3M people, the food is better, the weather is better (usually 6 weeks of winter), more jobs, less terrible traffic, hell, the SKY is higher. Do it. Get gone. Find a better way to live.
