Chrysler / Dodge / Plymouth Neon. They were EVERYWHERE.

This car was everywhere in the late 90s. You had one, or knew someone who did.
Mindslyder404@reddit
Everywhere and ugly as sin.
Rebel_T_Outlaw@reddit
98 Plymouth neon espresso my first car
SmallBarnacle1103@reddit
Had a 98 Plymouth espresso edition. Drove it for 16 years until it fell apart.
xxxtanacon@reddit
I grew up poor in the 2010s these were still around just with yellowed lights and horrible paint. Pretty much every extinct everywhere car, like the OG boxy Taurus, Dodge Intrepid, Chevy, Corsica/Lumina and the entire Pontiac/Saturn/oldsmobile lineup 1990-defunct all disappeared in the last 9-12 years
mostlygray@reddit
I had one. It was a '94 ('95 model year). It had literally no options. No power steering, manual transmission, it didn't come with a radio, it had a radio from a Dodge Spirit in it. No A/C. Because it was a '94 it used a bobble strut to keep down engine vibration which also made it hard to drive at slow speed.
I got up to 70 miles per gallon on the highway and 40 mpg in town. It weighed nothing which made it nimble and fast. It was fun to drive.
SouthernExpatriate@reddit
They were here, then they were gone
It's the Chrysler way
Bob_Obloooog@reddit
Cash for clunkers took all of them.
BomBiddyByeBye@reddit
Like many other models of our earlier years, they were lost via cash for clunkers in 08-09.
SouthernExpatriate@reddit
YOU'RE a goddamn ijit
Most were off the road before C4C
LocationTechnical862@reddit
Right. I still see 95 Hondas on the rode, but the neon is totally extinct.
drewbaccaAWD@reddit
Not totally extinct. I was at a gas station a couple months ago and there were two of them side by side.. both from the 95-99 generation. I should have waited for the owners just to see who was driving them.
argyle9000@reddit
Right? After this car I bought a Honda, which made me think the Neon was a "disposable car." I maintained that thing meticulously, but it would encounter the oddest series of problems. I didn't know shifter bushings could deteriorate along with engine mounts. It's as if every one expired at the seven year mark.
rharper38@reddit
Mine was murdered out in front of the house at 4 years old. With a full tank of gas and a new set of tires. I cried
DrMcJedi@reddit
They vanished, like their paint…
Spare-Good-5372@reddit
Yo, you know what else was everywhere? Fucking Geo Trackers, dude. I wanted one so bad.
Separate-Relative-83@reddit
My mom had a teal Suzuki Samurai. Loved it.

GarblingCumfarts@reddit
My buddy in college had a yellow Samurai and we went everywhere in that thing. I think it had about 90hp and we were all butt-to-butt in that thing, but good god we had fun in it.
Spare-Good-5372@reddit
Fuck yes, dude, those were the shit
Separate-Relative-83@reddit
My sister still has it!
d_the_m_80@reddit
I learned to drive on a Geo Metro. Sweet little 3-cylinder, manual trans. Like a go-kart with a roof.
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
My mom had a Geo Prism and that thing went 0-60 in like.. 60 seconds. Don't even bother trying to have a convo or turning the radio on on the highway.
espressocycle@reddit
That was a Corolla. I drove one for years. Fine car.
Boring-Gas-8903@reddit
Three of my friends and I took a cross country road trip in a Prism. Had to turn off the AC when going through the mountains and hills…that thing really struggled, but we eventually made it.
DrMcJedi@reddit
Did you have a manual? Mine was actually pretty fast…
AlienDelarge@reddit
The prizm was a rebadged corolla though and those were at least reliable compared to the Neons. I have a '95 Corolla with the 7A-FE and it isn't all that slow either. Lightning quick compared to the '87 Voyager mom and dad had.
Negative-Wrap95@reddit
I almost bought one. Didn't want to deal with the soft top though.
I lived in "questionable" neighborhoods. Having something someone could get into with a pocket knife was unappealing.
Spare-Good-5372@reddit
Same reason I never got one :-\
Cheezslap@reddit
Of all the Goes, those have survived! At least in The South. Can't find a Storm if my life depended on it, but there's always like 3 Trackers on Marketplace.

Every now and then I see a Geo Tracker and am like "Holy hell it still runs?". I've seen 3 different ones and two were hot pink.
UltraconservativeBap@reddit
My neighbors had two!
stangAce20@reddit
They were also generally junk! In fact, a lot of what Chrysler/Dodge built in the 90s and most of the 2000s was junk. That’s why they needed to bail out and that’s why they are currently owned by Fiat.
J_is_for_Journey@reddit
They stopped making the 2 door in 1998 and I have never known true love since
Embarrassed-Lie-5728@reddit
I had a red one in college! Bought a used one in 2000. :)
basylica@reddit
Most of them were made in Belvidere illinois!
djhyland@reddit
Yeah, my dad's side of the family is from Belvidere (and the surrounding area) and we'd always see the plant when we'd drive through. I was obscurely proud of that minimal connection. My parents had a green '95 four-door Neon, and I loved it so much that I got a 2000 red Neon for my first car and I loved that one even more. I was crushed when my wife made me trade it in (it was 200k+ miles and not running very well anymore) and would pay a stupid amount to have another just like it now.
basylica@reddit
majority of my family still lives there. GO BUCS!
Wak3upHicks@reddit
My first car, a 95 Dodge Neon
jun00b@reddit
When I was 10 (roughly around 95) this was my dream car. Idk why. Ended up with a Dodge Intrepid
The_Best_Yak_Ever@reddit
That’s awesome haha, my dream car was the Dodge Intrepid itself when I was 12 or so during the sailing time! I loved how it reminded me of a space ship. Just loved the body design.
Similar_Ad2094@reddit
I'm the same age as you. My uncle had the cats ass last year intrepid and it was super nice.
outside_cat@reddit
I looked up cat's ass intrepid and did not get any car results. :(
Darkspiff73@reddit
I loved the Intrepid when I was a kid. It looked so futuristic. Also the Oldsmobile Aurora.
My friend in HS had an Intrepid and I still thought it was cooler than my ‘93 Buick Century.
Cubejunky@reddit
Mine was a 99 Neon, I kind of miss that car too.
thomasmarrone@reddit
Same! My parents bought an emerald green Neon for my grandpa new. When he couldn’t drive anymore he passed it on to me. 😭

BillBrasky1179@reddit
My girlfriend at the time had a brand new 95 and that sucker had some kick when I drove it.
joshhupp@reddit
Same. I delivered pizzas in it so that might be why OP thought they were everywhere
graveybrains@reddit
I loved my pink piece of junk.
elphaba00@reddit
Same. My parents bought it for my mom, but she quickly realized that she hated it. Instead of taking it back, she gave it to me. I was driving her old car, and I just gave that one back to her.
BurnThePage@reddit
Had an ‘01 R/T with a manual transmission. I loved that car.
CaptianBrasiliano@reddit
Cash for Clunkers... What a piece of shit program that was. It's the reason you don't really find $1000 beaters that are maybe shitty but still serviceable. All our cheap 90's cars got fed to the crusher when they could've been someone's It's better than having no car car.
kinguzoma@reddit
This is the one that almost got me
GmaninMS@reddit
I cant believe im the first comment about the Neon SRT-4 that Dodge made in 04-05. That thing was fun as hell to drive.
THE_NO_LIFE_KING@reddit
RIP to all the SRT4s, you never see them on the road anymore and in the junkyard somewhere. They really were bottle rockets.
t-w-i-a@reddit
Like strapping a rocket engine on a go-kart. I wanted one of these so bad back then lol
djdecimation@reddit
Srt 4 was pretty good for a quick little turbo manual
GmaninMS@reddit
It was just fun to drive. I sold Dodges at the time.
--redacted--@reddit
Lots of power (relatively at least), but the torque steer would rip the steering wheel out of your hands.
guyako@reddit
And they sucked.
the_spacecowboy555@reddit
Oh man. I remember them, the when they came out with the R/T which I wanted, then the SRT4. I lied those actually.
the__ghola__hayt@reddit
"I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS"
SavingsInformation10@reddit
It’s a good car!
seminarysmooth@reddit
Surprisingly roomy backseat, iirc.
kdhardon@reddit
I had a friend that worked for Honda. They bought one to reverse engineer. They were astonished by how thin the chassis sheet metal was and how poorly it was assembled.
_Nemesis_Enforcer_@reddit
I actually just saw one in the wild a few weeks ago and it has an classic / antique license plate. I told my wife about it….gave me some feels. Antique plates can be used if the vehicle is over 30 yrs old.
phillysleuther@reddit
We had five Neons. My mom bought her first - a 1995 white Plymouth Neon in 1995. I bought my first in 2001. She was a 2001 Dodge Neon. She was brown. My mom bought a 2005 black SXT. My sister bought a green 1999 and my mom had a blue Neon.
One-Ice1815@reddit
Outside of the literal shit build of these cars, the form factor is not that bad.
jackfaire@reddit
My first car was a 96 Dodge Neon thankfully without the spoiler I fucking hate spoilers they look ugly.
jp112078@reddit
Now there is literally one car that they sell.
larryjrich@reddit
Yup, my first car was a 2002 Neon I bought in 2004. Drove it for 15 years before giving it to my brother who still drives it today.
Bad-Moon-Rising@reddit
Mine was a 2001 bought in 2006. I drove it until 2013 and cried when the guy I sold it to drove it away. I replaced the head gasket, cam shaft and serpentine belt, among other things. I sold it because the transmission was leaking fluid and I couldn't afford (and it wasn't worth) to pay for it to be fixed or replaced. I loved that damn car.
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
It lasted 15 years??
larryjrich@reddit
Surprisingly yes, although I dumped tons of money into it. Had to rebuild the engine after the serpentine belt broke when I was on the freeway. Had to get the transmission fixed, as well as several other problems.
Rust_Bucket37@reddit
Evidently longer based on what they wrote "Yup, my first car was a 2002 Neon I bought in 2004. Drove it for 15 years before giving it to my brother who still drives it today."
YoItsThatOneDude@reddit
Surprisingly fun to drive in a manual too

Red Plymouth 4 Door Neon, 1996
skttrbrain1984@reddit
97 Neon here when I was 19 years old. I’m 6’2” and 230+lbs but I was cozy in there and that little 5 speed was fun to drive.
MaybeSwedish@reddit
I wanted one
Dildo_Shw4ggins@reddit
My mom had a 97 Dodge Neon Sport. She got it shortly before I got my driver’s license, and since I didn’t have a vehicle of my own, I drove it quite a bit. It really was a fun car to drive, and I also remember it had an exceptional stock sound system. Had my first lay in that car while listening to the Deftones. Great memories!
Successful_Fox_9118@reddit
I sold Toyota's and few of these cars got traded in even made it to 100,000 miles
Swimming_Temporary_7@reddit
Had a black Dodge with a sun roof
Ok_Ball_788@reddit
I rode in someones and it was a rattletrap.
Corn_Beefies@reddit
I had a 2002 that I only sold about 3 years ago. 5 speed, was super easy to work on. I always kept up on oil changes and maintenance. It wasn't anything to look at but it ran like a top until the day I sold it and it never left me stranded in all the years I owned it. My wife thought I was nuts but it did everything I needed it to do. Plus I have a work truck the company paid for that I took home.
Phranc68@reddit
One of the greatest drops of all time. They could have had a multi model run but in typical Chrysler fashion (in all it's forms) they had no follow up plan or capacity.
western_style_hj@reddit
With a racing stripe
Kaiser-Sohze@reddit
The North American market is in dire need of smaller affordable cars instead of more giant vehicles that cost a fortune and squander fuel. The import companies like Toyota and Honda took over because that market segment was handed to them.
Riffage@reddit
My friend had one until like 2015. Was a solid car until the end. What killed it was the ECU died and he either couldn’t find a replacement or it was too expensive to fix. But it ran good up until the ecu died.
rsvp_nj@reddit
Thankfully not in my driveway
MordoksVapePen1@reddit
Hi.
SavageObjector@reddit
If you drove one of these in high school you have probably drunk a Coke Zero out of one by now given then were essentially aluminum cans with wheels.
jenesia-CakeEatnNPC-@reddit
i have the car that replaced these, 2012 dodge caliber sxt, mine was swapped out for a 2.4l and its a lil firecracker; if only it didnt have the CVT 😒😑
Ceasman@reddit
MSRP was like $9k for a new car.
castlenutjob@reddit
Where i lived its was a rainbow of Shadows.
animus218@reddit
I had a shadow!
SaraAB87@reddit
I had a shadow and then a neon.
eejjkk@reddit
"Cash for Clunkers" in 2009 really destroyed the used car market and the budget car building scene in general. So many cool, interesting and fun cars just wiped off the face of the earth in a single year.
animus218@reddit
I'm sure Kars4Kids didn't help way before 2009. Also, fuck those commercials and that awful jingle.
ifwinterends@reddit
My sister had one, it was like $9000 brand new.
Cheezslap@reddit
They were honestly great cars with a bag wrap and normally worse ownership. But I owned five of these by choice and was very active on the message boards for a long time. I'm still looking for a clean single cam sedan with a stick.
drewbaccaAWD@reddit
Agreed. I'd buy up a 5 speed Neon from 95-99 in a heartbeat if I saw one in decent condition. They were fun little cars. I wasn't on any Neon message board that I can remember (although that doesn't mean I wasn't, just that I don't remember, lol). I still have a stack of MoparNow magazine in the attic.
Cheezslap@reddit
Ohhhhhhh, that's awesome! I couldn't afford the subscription so I have like one issue. I'm so jealous!
Frosty_Occasion_8466@reddit
Chick car!
MegaManSE@reddit
Oh man I remember when these came out and I was so shocked. I wanted one so bad. It was the first real non box car looking car on the road. (My first car was a 91 dodge spirit btw).
OogaBooganaitor@reddit
And then the fuel pump fell in the tank, and you weren’t mad about the godawful arcade carpet that was all over the interior.
Fappy_as_a_Clam@reddit
i ran into a guy a brewery a while back. i was going to say a couple years ago but honestly i think it was pre-covid.
anyway, buddy pulled up in a ratchet Neon. it was turbo'd and everything.
i stopped him and said i cant believe there is one still running, and apparently there is a whole following for them. he said he went to Florida (from Michigan) every year for a meet up. he did say there was less and less each year though.
Chi_Nap_King@reddit
My friend had a STR4 and would get upset if you called it a Neon instead of a SRT4. Obviously I only used to call it a Neon
ghostfromtheshell@reddit
Respect to these little tanks. I used to drive a little 5 speed one and treated it like shit and it never let me down
fortlowe@reddit
Cheap. Reliable. Capable. Fixable. This was the VW Beatle 2.0. I wish it was still in production.
drewbaccaAWD@reddit
I see a few people in the comments calling them trash, but I agree with you, these were easily fixable issues. They were little rockets with a manual.
smishkey@reddit
I had one 96 neon coupe. Manual everything, had no radio from factory. Got it all installed after purchase. Was good for awhile, then cracked cylinder head, twice.
drewbaccaAWD@reddit
No mention of the window falling all the time... did you actually avoid that headache?

prix03gt@reddit
I actually just saw one of these in the wild, running and driving and it actually looked in really good shape. I was shocked.
pfearg@reddit
Embarrassed to say it but I had a brand new Neon with a Hypercolor paint job that changed when the sun hit it. looking back....sigh.
Weird_Squirrel_8382@reddit
I had one of these! With a cassette tape connector for my iPod
06Wahoo@reddit
My dad had one and loved it. I felt completely squished in it when I had to get in, so I hated it.

Black ‘95 Plymouth Neon 2 door Manual. Had it from like 98-2002. Till the timing belt blew a few states away from home.
soltydog@reddit
We knew so many people with them, we used them as the cars for our wedding party. One limo and a line of Neons.
Mogwai02@reddit
My sis had one. Boy did she run that thing into the ground 🤣
HollowVoices@reddit
I wanted one. And I wanted to turn it into a street racer... I was a silly kid. I rarely ever see these any more. A few 2000's SRTs, but almost never a basic 90s Neon.

You could always tell yours apart with its own unique fade pattern on the roof or the hood. Priceless
rharper38@reddit
Especially the purple one.
I had an 04. It was my dream car. In black. I loved it. Drove it for 4 years, almost paid off and the neighbor rear-ended the car out in front of the house.
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
I remember seeing one in town with the paint just completely peeling off and someone wrote a rant in sticker letters like "JONES' DODGE IS A SCAM AND WONT FIX MY PAINT" or something lol
Capable-Impress3296@reddit
My first car too!!! A white one, and I loved it. And yes, the paint peeled off the entire roof

Pontiac Grand Am's were the care of choice at my school.
spaceporter@reddit
My mom had a Sunfire and it was a Trans Am in my mind. A Grand Am would have been a balling car for high school. The cool kids at my school drove Ford Probes that were heavily modified.
Murphy_Dropkick410@reddit
OMG I had a used yellow Sunfire. Had the dealership change the red pinstripe black and I named it Sunstreaker. Cause I'm (still) a nerd
spaceporter@reddit
It was both literally the exact same vehicle and somehow 100x cooler than a Cavalier.
I don’t know why but anyone driving a Sunfire got compliments and anyone driving a Cavalier got mocked incessantly.
InMyHagPhase@reddit
My best friend had the Sunfire while I had the Cavalier. I loved my Cavalier but man the Sunfire was it. That design did it for me for some strange reason.
Murphy_Dropkick410@reddit

limelight022@reddit
Im ashamed to admit i owned one. '99, sedan in that bright blueish green color.
Skipper0463@reddit
We had a red one. I think the Plymouth version. The electronics sucked and the instruments on the dash wouldn’t work. I once ran out of gas because I couldn’t tell how much we had left. Also got a speeding ticket because I didn’t know how fast I was going. I once saw The Kids in the Hall live and they made fun out how many Neons were in our state (I lived in CT). Good times.
Drunk_Pilgrim@reddit
Hi.
SaraAB87@reddit
And now they are nowhere
austinmiles@reddit
Oh man. My high school had a driving range that was stocked with these. This is what we learned on in Drivers Ed. Way more fun than the simulators which we also had.
I still remember the ad where it finished the build with a kiss.
paintedwoodpile@reddit
I had a Plymouth version of that very same car pictured. It was a lot of fun to drive. Easy to work on too. I learned how to work on cars because of it.

I own a 99 Neon R/T and owned three other first generation Neons including one that I turbocharged. Love those cars.
Cashewkaas@reddit
When I was 16 we took a family vacation to the US, all the way from the Netherlands. First few days we drove around in one of these!

I was in my first car accident in a Dodge Neon! I wasn't driving, my friend pulled up at the park and picked us up, he crashed the car like, four blocks later. Rolled it several times. We had NO idea that he was drunk and had stolen his sister's keys 🤦🏻 We were like, 15 and just surprised and thought that it was cool that he was driving his sister's car so we jumped in. He sped off with NO time to explain WTF was going on, and boom, we were crawling out 💁🏻
LiGuangMing1981@reddit
My friend in my first year of university (1998-1999) had one, a second generation IIRC.
They were indeed everywhere, along with their cousin the PT Cruiser that came later.
Elegant-Aerie-1233@reddit
My parents got me a dodge neon for my 16th birthday. It was a blueish purple color. Manual transmission.
ChutneyRiggins@reddit
My drivers ed teacher had us practice driving in a Plymouth Neon Expresso. We had to floor it to merge onto the freeway with three burly teenagers as passengers on board.
rotorocker@reddit
Living in (at least) central New Jersey we only ever had drivers ed classes, no road courses and sure as hell not public roads. My guess would be insurance purposes. It's crazy every time I saw a movie or TV show where there were actual cars.
ChutneyRiggins@reddit
In Washington I believe that you need to have a certain number of hours of road instruction completed before you can get a license. (This only applies to drivers under 18. I think Once you are 18, the requirement goes away.)
rotorocker@reddit
In nj at 16 you needed 6 hours before getting a license. So you did 3 2 hour sessions or 2 3 hour sessions like I did. Had a really cool dude named Doug and it was a mercury cougar. I literally got grounded by my parents picking me up from the grocery store at 16 because I refused to drive their minivan home. Been driving sports cars ever since 17 and don't intend to stop, though getting a manual is increasingly difficult.
RealityOk9823@reddit
I once saw a drunk, enraged, shirtless redneck stomping the shit out of a Neon in a mall parking lot. He wasn't angry at the car but rather the occupants. Good times.

Between 1999 and 2005 I dated 5 girls that drove neons. I be probably knew 8 other people that drove them during that time.

Wish more manufacturers would make a decent affordable sedan like these.

I drove cross-country after college graduation in one that had a dying radiator. We had to pull over and pop the hood constantly to let it cool off. It was late May and hot, but we had to blast the heat and roll down the windows to keep going farther in between stops.
I remember being pulled over somewhere in the Black Hills and a Jeep-load of guys stopped and offered us a cold beer to pour over the radiator to cool it down. We declined with thanks.

I remember one of my friends in high school was gifted one by his parents when he turned 16. It was blue, but the upholstery looked like the floor of an arcade.

I had the black 99 Sport model with the dohc engine. It was a really solid car for me and I never had any engine or paint problems. I miss that car.

Of the few at my high school lucky enough to drive brand-new cars, I remember a disproportionate number of them being Neons.
(Of course most of us, including myself, had used cars and considered ourselves lucky to have them.)

I went to a community college my first year out of high school, and I met a girl named Amy there. One day we left school because she bought a pink Neon, and I went with her to pick it up from the dealership. This post just reminded me about that. I haven't thought about her in years.

My first car was an emerald green Neon that I got as a hand-me-down from my Grandpa.

My first car was a Plymouth Neon. Now I drive a Toyota Corolla, which is basically the same thing.

Periwinkle Dodge Neon was my dream car back in HS.

Our high school had a special event where you could drive it through a course and it simulated intoxicated driving.

I had one, i bought it for 1200$ from my pregnant neighbor to deliver pizza and chinese food after school. Absolute tin can. Do not drive fast past trucks, a wind drift will move your car.

I had a blue one, her name was Blue Balls. I loved that car.

My dad had a white one with hail damage. We called it the golf ball until all the paint peeled off.

Our entire high school was around 100 kids and there were three of these in the student lot out front.
