Do Americans actually sit on their front porch much, or is that more of a movie image than real life?

From outside the US, the front porch feels like a very American image. I’m curious how common it really is now, and whether it depends a lot on region.
ExplanationMiddle@reddit
I had never thought about this before, but just recently my husband pointed out that about half the houses in our neighborhood have chairs or benches or a porch swing on the front porch. In 25 years I don't think I've ever noticed people using them. (We used ours some during Covid instead of inviting people inside.). People are much more likely to sit on their back porch.
Organic_Bat_1489@reddit
Not much of a porch on my house, but a big deck in the back.
EfficientCable8377@reddit
Sitting on my porch now. Not sure you would call it front....one side faces water traffic and the other faces the road. But I sit on both sides of my house. Depends on the sun. I actually have a wrap around so sometimes I sit on the sides.
Basic_Scale6330@reddit
They do especially in the summer
And in nyc the go on roof tops
KikiCorwin@reddit
I would, but it's already muggy. And the dog gets annoyed if we dare leave the house without him. (He's also not allowed out off leash because those ears are purely decorative when outside.)
If I had a decent porch swing, I'd probably chill out there with throw pillows and a blanket when it's nicer or raining.
angriestsunchips@reddit
I love my front porch. I’ve realized that when I live somewhere without one I go outside much much less
SamCanyon@reddit
Absolutely! If you have a great porch, you sit on it.
user1648293@reddit
Yes!! It’s funny bc a a child you don’t understand how folks can just on their porches (esp without phones or newspapers). But as you get older, you just crave it. First off, having a porch is becoming more a rarity. But regardless, there’s something about sitting on a nice chair when the weather is good, just feels good. Bonus points if you live in a city and get to interact with the community.
anon_186282@reddit
It used to be more common before air conditioning.
RichardCleveland@reddit
Ya the porch, or the edge of their garage, for some reason a lot of elderly do that in my area.
tonic65@reddit
Yes, a lot of front porch sittin'. Waving to passers by is mandatory.
TraditionalEvent6102@reddit
what front porch?
xoxo_xoxo_xoxo_@reddit
I'm obsessed with sitting on a front porch. Last place I was in had a great one, with a futon on it, and I'd sometimes take naps on it too. Watch movies on my laptop with headphones, read... Then a neighborhood cat starting joining me and snuggling me whenever I'd be out there... blisss. RIP that house :( gentrification :(((((
melissaly3@reddit
I would sit on a front porch if I had one.
Innuendo64_@reddit
I'm my experience most people who have a house with a good front porch takes advantage of it.
Chester_Allman@reddit
I'm sitting on my front porch right now! Got a glass of iced coffee, a view of the Hudson River and the NJ Palisades, and some reggae on the speaker. The squirrels are scampering in my little front yard and the blue jays are chasing each other through the trees. Not too bad, especially after a long stupid winter.
Sea_Currency_3800@reddit
Sitting in my garage with my coffee, door up, listening to the birds. No front porch, giant patio in the back.

Dude, you must live in the Midwest, that is a beloved past time here!

It's really pleasant to do in the rain. I've always enjoyed garage sitting on a cool rainy fall or spring day. Not so nice in summer...
ponyboycurtis1980@reddit
I didn't know until I moved in that my corrugated-roof carport would be my favorite part of my house. Rain o. That thing is better than any orchestra
Waterbaby8182@reddit
West coast here. Always loved sitting on the covered front porch with my dad when it rained. Best ones were thunderstorms and watching lightning arc across the sky. We still do it sometimes, but not as often since I have my own home and family.
CoffeeChocolateBoth@reddit
Our garage is huge but it has a metal roof and in the rain, OMG, it's so loud, there is also an oak tree right outside of the doors, hearing those acorns hitting it in the Fall is like bombs going off. LOL
Tomahawk513@reddit
I have a big garage (but a small house - figure that one out) and a his summer I’m gonna host kids’ movie nights for the neighborhood (I have kids, it’s not weird). Gonna pop popcorn, have some juice, and lay down some towels. I have an old but very good sound system, I need to find a larger TV though.
NotUntilTheFishJumps@reddit
So many fond memories of hanging out at my Mawmaw and Pawpaw's hours in the late 80's/early 90's with them and my parents chilling on lawn chairs right inside their garage, and is kids catching lightning bugs in the front yard.

I do this, but naked. Helps keep the Mormons away.
Anistappi@reddit
I've had two American Mormons come convert me while I was sitting on a bar terrace here in Finland, drinking beer and smoking.
They were perfectly polite, but I don't know how they figured "hey, that long-haired fellow in a Motörhead shirt would surely love to hear about Joseph Smith!"

There’s a naked lady that likes to sit in front of a local convenience store. The local police department posted on Facebook once requesting that people stop calling them in regard to the naked lady. She does use a sheet to keep it from being a crime. I’ve always assumed this is an American thing.

CoffeeChocolateBoth@reddit
We have a great front porch and a nice patio out back but out back the neighbors have chickens and a rooster, plus a dog, and it can get noisy, but it's warm with the sun beating down on us, so, we choose the front covered porch. One day we might get a porch added to the back patio but for now, nope. Those neighbors have to move first! LOL
AccidentLow1565@reddit
I have a whole living room set up in my garage. Sitting there now, drinking coffee and watching a show.
FormidableMistress@reddit
I don't have a porch either but I really enjoy sitting in my garage having a toke.
HidingInTrees2245@reddit
The “having a toke” part is important. That and fresh cup of coffee. 😁
FormidableMistress@reddit
I'm here now! Lol I have my coffee and oui'd, and the cat that came with the house, and we're just chilling and listening to the birds.

chairmanghost@reddit
There is like an inch of space on any side of my car, i can't put a rake in there and still park lol. Happily I have a porch, and side yard
Chester_Allman@reddit
Sounds like my neighbor’s house. Their garage was built for something like a model T, and they try to cram an SUV in there lol
HidingInTrees2245@reddit
I was doing that earlier today. 😊I have a front porch but the garage is somehow more inviting.
cornlip@reddit
I live too close to the road and don’t like being on display, so I have an auxiliary porch thing in the back yard that isn’t attached to the house. Idk what it should really be called. It’s three walls and a roof covered in vines. I call it my last of us porch cause it looks forgotten by time and I like it. Fire pit in front of it is nice.
VegetableSquirrel@reddit
Also, the newer houses tend not to be large like in the older Craftsman homes of yore. If the homeowner hasn't created a designated sitting area in the front yard near the porch, I've seen people sit in the garage or driveway with the door up.
doubleshort@reddit

Mid-60s when I made the post! And plenty warm in the afternoon sun. Got a little chilly by the evening, though.

My dad used to drive back to Staten Island along the Palisades Parkway after we’d visited my grandparents’ grave in Nanuet.
That was back when the Tappen Zee Bridge looked very different than today. Thank you for that memory.
Chester_Allman@reddit
It’s a pleasant drive! From my house, I can sometimes see glints of sunlight from the cars moving along behind the trees at the top of the Palisades, or glimpses of their headlights at night.
cindyb0202@reddit
Can I come over? I’ll bring my own wine.
Chester_Allman@reddit
Heck yeah! If it was a couple degrees warmer (like next week), we’d be doing margaritas instead of wine.
cindyb0202@reddit
I got the chips and salsa!
cindyb0202@reddit
Is Missouri too far? Lol
Playful_Question538@reddit

I bought my house because of my front porch. I watched an epic lighting storm last night in my rocking chair, huddled under a blanket. Life is good.
missdawn1970@reddit
Sitting on a covered porch during a thunderstorm is the best!
Kazoo113@reddit
It is!!
farrieremily@reddit
That sounds amazing! We don’t use the porch or deck much but I make sure we grab chairs and have a fire regularly spring through fall.
Kazoo113@reddit
Oooh love that!!
Sammakko660@reddit
Yup. Don't do it as much in winter (in New England), but have enjoyed many evenings/mornings with various beverages on my aunt's front porch. People watching. Watching the rain.
missdawn1970@reddit
One time I was sitting on my front porch during a Bills game, and I could tell how the game was going by listening to my neighbors cheering or swearing.
meils121@reddit
Porches are the best for rain and thunderstorms. I live right in the middle of our little village, and on a good stormy evening, you can see most of the neighborhood out on their porches watching the storm.
Porches are also fantastic for people watching. There's no open container law where I live, and we have a good number of festivals. I like to sit on the front porch and just enjoy the shananigans.
Untimed_Heart313@reddit
Would open container laws apply if you're on private property? If so then whoopsie~ I enjoy the occasional beer on the porch. It's a great time to watch the squirrels raid my neighbors bird feeders lol
meils121@reddit
Oh, by no open container law I mean that there's no law saying people can't have open containers - so it's pretty much a free-for-all in terms of alcohol consumption when there's an event going on. You can do whatever you want on private property, but where I live there's also nothing limiting you from walking around town drinking a beer.
_WeSellBlankets_@reddit
I'm from Midwest white culture. We do everything in the backyard and we prefer decks. We do not understand hanging out in the front of the house. We want a little more seclusion.
JaniceRossi_in_2R@reddit
That’s not true. Im white and love porch hanging
capsaicinintheeyes@reddit
Yeah--it doesn't feel like actual personal space if I can't absentmindedly scratch my nuts without offending the neighbors
Spirited_Ingenuity89@reddit
I’m with you. I feel like the front porch/yard is too exposed. I have a hammock, and I always set it up in the backyard, never the front.
Tom__mm@reddit
Colorado, I think most people here are back-deck people too. Houses often have the back deck facing the good view where construction allows. But I lived some years in Kentucky where, in more humble neighborhoods at least, porch drinking and chatting with neighbors was absolutely an institution. Many houses have a front porch with a swing seat and chairs for the purpose. Before air conditioning, you just didn’t stay inside on a summer’s evening so it’s an old social habit.
pterencephalon@reddit
I don't think that's a Midwest thing. It's at least wasn't my experience in Wisconsin. We used our front porch all the time!
dobie_dobes@reddit
I think it depends. I’m in the Twin Cities and my neighborhood definitely has a good representation of porch/front stoop usage. I use both front and back probably equally, but the garage gatherings with neighbors is where it’s at. Can’t beat that in the summer.
Main_Insect_3144@reddit
Yep! I always though of the front porch living as more of an east coast or southern thing.
Specialist_Goat_2354@reddit
In New Orleans I saw so many sitting on their absolutely terrible porches out front of their house which was crazy cause it's too hot and awful outside there.
But nowhere else I've been. But tbh. I don't travel ti the south much and it feels like a southern thing.
rottnappl@reddit
My family doesn’t even have that great of a front porch and we still use it. If it exists we sits.
Deep_Downlow@reddit
If its not too hot or cold, or theres something on TV or the kids aren't..... there's many a reason I didn't use the great outdoor space I meticulously set up and used less than a dozen times over a few years.
I had one house that the front porch got too hot in the afternoon, another I didn't like the view, another it was too far from the kitchen and I drink coffee much too quickly, or I got distracted....
RealWeekness@reddit
Whqts a mud room? Ive seen a few people mentioning these lately. Growing up im california, Ive never heard of or seen one here.
Deep_Downlow@reddit
It's a room to take off your muddy shoes so you don't track mud thru the house, additionally, there's an interior door so all the cold doesn't get in the rest of the house and then the door to the exterior open to either the driveway/ side yard or if in the front, the front yard.
Sometimes its just a poorly insulated porch/ sunroom. Other places it's a larger room with nice benches installed and then little cubbies for your shoes and coat hooks. Other times it doubles as the laundry room.
In California terms if you enclosed your front porch or the little outside entry way and put a storm door up front and then your regular door to get in,before you go on in to your house or apartment.
Ironwarsmith@reddit
For some reason, every fucking house built this century has decided I never wanted to sit on a porch to begin with so they got rid of them.
I fucking miss having a front and back porch, all they have anymore is a fucking 4ft sq concrete slab that's in direct sunlight from sun up to sun down.
justovaryacting@reddit
In my corner of the US, there are many houses with front porches (some big and very nicely decorated), but, at least in my city, I’ve never seen anyone actually sitting on one. If people hang out outside, it will be in the back screened in porch or backyard.
rexeditrex@reddit
I just moved to a new place with a front porch and I just came inside a little while ago!
DogsBikesAndMovies@reddit
Yes, for sure, I'm in full agreement with u/Innuendo64_ . I don't have a front porch because I live on the 2nd floor of an apartment complex. But when I lived in a house with a front porch, yes, we made regular habit of hanging out on it.
In my current situation, I have a couple neighbors who will hang out near the front door of the apartment. They're not doing anything in particular; that's just their urban version of a front porch. Sometimes I'll sit down and join them for a beer and pleasant conversation.
leilani238@reddit
I don't really have a front porch, but I love hanging out on my deck when the weather is decent. At least in my area, there are a lot of decks and not so many porches.
EdwardPotatoHand@reddit
also, it depends which way your house faces.. if you are getting blinded by the sun, then the backyard is where the time is spent more
Equivalent-Pin-4759@reddit
It depends on the house and the neighborhood. Our house has a nice front porch which we do use from time to time, but if we want a quiet retreat we are more likely to use our patio in the back.
IdaDuck@reddit
We use all our outdoor spaces including the front porch. My favorite thing about the front porch is early summer mornings with a cup of coffee before anyone else is up.

CardiganHeretic@reddit
Strongly depends on the house and local culture: I live in the South, in a town where front porches are part of all historical homes, and I see them in use often. My godparents are frequently on their porches when the weather is nice; they even smoke & grill out there.
spirosand@reddit
I specifically bought my house for it's covered front porch. I have my morning coffee there every day it isn't too cold, and watch the sunset when i can.
Great-cornhoIio@reddit
Depends on the view. Behind my house is farm fields with a clear view of the horizon. I paid to have a concrete porch and awning built on the back of my house. Just so i can sit and watch the sunsets. Also sit and view the stars on a clear night.
The front has a small porch, with a view of my neighbors house. The only time i sit on the front porch is when I’m doing yard work and take a break…

In most of the houses and apartments I lived in, I didn’t really have a front porch. The house my fiancée and I live in has a front porch so we pretty often sit out there when we can. THE_GREAT_PICKLE@reddit
My front porch is little more than a landing with some steps, so no. I do have a huge side porch off the addition to my house though which is functionally similar. I sit on it all the time. Yep. We do. Prefire house we didn't because the rail was in the way. Rebuild no rail so have a nice view. Also the garage blocks the high winds we get. And facing south it is warm year round in a cold climate state.

Depending on where in the U.S. it can be highly seasonal. I live in the Midwest, interior of the continent, and you would have to be a masochist to spend prolonged periods on an open porch for much of late December through early February, or late June through early August.
Jas62021@reddit
We have a large front porch. As soon as the weather here starts to warm up I put the cafe table and my antique wrought iron chairs out. The rocking chair is out year round. And I’ve sat in it watching snow fall many times. We’ve watched neighborhood kids grow up from the front porch. Have heard MANY a fight. Watched ambulances come and go. Police arrest people. Rain pour down. Played CAH and D&D. And had cookouts. Hell. It’s nearly 8pm and my husband is sitting out there relaxing right now

Rural northeast here, and coffee on the porch in the morning in the summer is my favorite thing. I also am getting to know the neighborhood birds through this practice (there’s a pair of ravens that are a delight).

To us, it is. We’re over a mile through woods to the nearest neighbor. Our back deck faces a river that’s about 30-40 yards away. A creek down the hill a bit.
InannasPocket@reddit
Similar, but our lawn is smaller and we overlook the woods. Even when it's pretty damn cold we spend a lot of time on the porch. The deer have even decided we're not very threatening!
Jumpy-Cranberry-1633@reddit
My cousins have a similar set up, we spend HOURS watching the cows when we visit. Literally entire days spent lounging on the porch watching the world go by. It’s fabulous.
TieDye_Raptor@reddit
I have a better backyard than I do front porch (too small for sitting), so I sit in the backyard, instead. Some do sit on their front porches, though.
sacluded@reddit
Where I live there aren't a lot of front porches big enough to just sit on. A lot of people put couches or chairs in their garage and will sit out there with the door up. They even make screens for garages for just that purpose.
New_Willingness6453@reddit
Newer home, front porch is small. However, I have a large back yard and do all my outside sitting on the back deck.

It's funny. I have a front porch and a patio in my backyard. I live in the Philadelphia region, and it's common for many people to have chairs in or right out front of the garage.

I lived in an apartment complex once that had garaged you could rent for an additional fee. The line of one-car garages were across the lane from the apartments which had parking in front of them. I wish I could say that I had an idyllic American front porch overlooking a quiet piece of land. The reality of is we are on a busy street close to a busier intersection. It's a two family and we rent to very good friends of ours, so we will all hang out on the front porch from time to time. Sometimes we watch thunderstorms roll through, and sometimes we watch accidents get cleaned up at the intersection.

Some places. Depends on neighborhood and orientation of the house and proximity to the street.
Growing up we sat out on the back porch to watch the trees sway and lightning bugs flicker in the evening enjoying a nice breeze in tranquil setting among friends and/or family sipping bourbon.
mjc500@reddit
I never see anyone sitting on their front porch near me. A lot of houses have them, but they’re unoccupied. I live in a very densely populated suburban/semi-urban area and it’s rare to see people just hanging out. Lots of traffic, pretty busy atmosphere in general… you would definitely hear a lot of cars if you were on the front porch.
When I was younger and lived in a different suburban area that felt a bit more chill - people were on their porches all the time.
I think the general noise and chaos is a factor.
boneyjoaniemacaroni@reddit
I’m honestly surprised by the number of comments from folks who regularly use their front porch. I can’t remember the last time I saw someone sitting on their front porch. I live in Oregon and I think it’s just not as much of a thing on the west coast. My fiance is from NC and he LOVES the idea of sitting on a front porch (we don’t currently have one but he’s dying to set our front yard up in a way that he can sit out there). I find it kind of a weird invasion of privacy to sit out front when we have a perfectly good back yard that’s much bigger, prettier, and utilitarian.
imalittlefrenchpress@reddit
I grew up in NYC, and people were always sitting on the stoop regardless of noise. Something changed. Maybe it was 9/11. Maybe we don’t feel quite as safe as we used to. Maybe it’s the climate.
Even in violent, 1970s bankrupt NYC, somehow sitting outside felt safer than it does now.

We don't have a porch, but we do have a covered patio. When my mother-in-law was alive we spent a lot of time sitting out front, where she could better monitor the neighborhood comings and goings. We'd wrap her up tight in the winter time so she could get some fresh air. She had dementia and often spent time on the patio before she got sick, so we kept it up as a familiar activity.
Alarming-Leek-402@reddit

awkwardchip_munk@reddit
Is anyone’s back yard not fenced?
MarkNutt25@reddit
Yes
awkwardchip_munk@reddit
Legitimately wondering, so you have a home that just looks into/shares the yard of another home, with no fence in between? Or you live on a big property with no neighboring homes?
Having trouble picturing a “backyard” that doesn’t have some type of structural delineation of where the property line ends. 🧐
audiojanet@reddit
Lots of homes have no fence or delineation.
awkwardchip_munk@reddit
I’m just confused how people know what property is theirs, if you and your neighbor have no fence where do you stop mowing lol. I have lived in about a dozen cities (and towns) across the country and have never seen a house not had clear property lines whether that be a fence or hedge, even my childhood home that was 10 acres in a wooded area had a fence, it’s pretty standard to outline your property in the US, at least in the south, Midwest and east coast (where I have lived).
I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, I’m asking where lol
audiojanet@reddit
I was house hunting online and they were in every section of the country.

MistaDoge104@reddit
I don’t really live in porch country so I'm not too familiar how most people do it, so I gotta ask, why back porch? If I had both, I feel like I'd be using the front one a lot more often, mostly to watch the world go by
Swimming-Gap7395@reddit

unknowingbiped@reddit
When I do build my house the front porch will be for spring and fall and the back for summer.
ChirrBirry@reddit
IMO it’s more important to orient your house towards the part of the day you want to enjoy most. I am a strict Sunset supremacist…I have no interest in watching sunrise, so given the choice I always try to have my outdoor hang out spot face sunset. Funny enough the sunrises are pretty incredible on my property when I do catch one on accident. I have a hall window that provides a majestic view of a dark valley full of trees and fog as the red ball of the sun lifts above a pastel layer cake of AM colors
GamerDadofAntiquity@reddit
Where you live impacts that. I like sitting outside in the morning, the sunrise is just a thing that happens during peak sitting outside hours. For roughly 2/3 of the year it’s uncomfortably warm by sunset here in GA, but early mornings are generally cool and comfortable.
ChirrBirry@reddit
Well that’s completely fair. We’re elevated enough in the Ozark region that even the worst hot evenings can be defeated with a ceiling fan on the patio.

Flashy-Specific-4083@reddit
For real. We’ve replaced front porches with backyard privacy fences. Kind of sad. We used to know our neighbors. Today we can coexist next to someone for years and never an interaction except a wave.
The neighborhood I grew up in during the 1970s and 80s had a range of ages. Any time someone decided to slap on a layer of roofing or some other outdoor project the retired men in the neighborhood would change into work clothes and help out. In 1982 my dad decided to waterproof our old musty basement and add living space down there. It required a trench around the house and then layer of tar and then a thick plastic tarp against the house. Once an excavator dug the trench, my dad and his uncle would do the rest of the work. By the end of day one three other older guys on the block had joined the work. The five of them knocked out that job so quick. Truly was like King of the Hill. Lol

I would love to have a good front porch and hang out on it. Unfortunately, due to neighborhood design, people don't hang out in front where I live because there is an alley system behind all the houses and people come and go through their garages in the rear of the house. Think-Departure-5054@reddit
I always thought it was a southern thing. I have no proof of this.. I’m a midwesterner and I prefer the back porch. The front porch feels too exposed
icekraze@reddit
Yes though it is dependent on a variety of factors.
The first factor is whether you have a front porch or not. Many houses have them and some ground floor apartments do as well but there are also many other types of houses that only have a stoop or a path to the front door.
Another factor is the climate. Not many people are going out on their porch in the northern states when it is 5F (-15C) and snowy. Just about the only time we did that is when we were sick with croup as kids to help open up our airways. Likewise if it is 100F (37.8C) and 98% humidity in some place like Georgia you likely will not want to sit on the porch unless you don’t have AC. If you don’t have AC you may be sleeping on your porch.
Final big factor is what the surrounding area is like. If there is a lot of pollution you probably won’t be out there a lot. If it is in an area with drive bys you probably won’t for safety. Also less common on very busy roads because of noise and other factors from lots of cars. But it is very common in suburban neighborhoods. Also very common in the country side houses (especially farms). I know the most common time we end up doing it when we were doing yard work. We would go and sit on the porch to rest and drink some water. Or people walking through the neighborhood would stop by while we were in our front yard and want to have a chat so we would go up to the porch and sit and chat.
This-Reindeer6063@reddit
Yeah. Even in shitty cities, there will be someone outside on a rocking chair on their porch.

That's kind of an old house thing. Modern homes tend to be focused on the backyard. My childhood farmhouse had a big porch, used to sit on it with my Dad and drink coffee and watch the sunrise. We were in the hills set back about a mile from the nearest road and neighbor. My current home is on two acres in the suburbs, doesn't have a front porch but a large back patio (partially covered) and a huge fenced backyard facing the woods on 3 sides. Very mellow place to grill, have bonfires in the fire pit, soak in the hot tub, or sit and watch nature.

My prior rental house had a front porch and my roommate and I would sit outside shooting the shit at least a few nights a week. When the weather was good I often sat outside in the morning drinking my coffee and doing sudoku

Front porch is well covered, so it's a nice spot when the rain is pouring down here in my woods.

I grew up in the country and there's nothing quite like sitting out there with a cup of coffee, watching the sunrise disperse the mist over the mountains.
Now I live in a city and there's nothing quite like sitting out there with a cup of coffee, listening to a neighbor explain why the cops are blocking the alley THIS time
Comfortable-Story-53@reddit
Yup. We sit there and take pot shots at squirrels and possums and such. While playing the banjo...

Front porch socializing is absolutely a thing in the South.
BravestBlossom@reddit
They/we used to. Modern houses, like last 20 years or more, really eliminated a porch and hyped up an attached garage, the garage is the main thing about the front of the house many times now. So without a porch and a front facing garage, a lot of of people open the garage door and sit just inside! Tons of older people, retirees, do this just about every day here in the south. I'd rather have a porch but unfortunately, they don't build houses like that anymore.
LettuceInfamous5030@reddit
I live in a large east coast city and we have a front stoop. It’s pretty common for people to sit on their porches or stoops. Many use their backyard as well. For example my parents have a full furniture set and a fire pit.
My MIL lives in the suburbs, she has a front porch and sits out there when it’s nice out to read and drink coffee. She uses it regularly spring to fall. She has a back patio that she uses for entertaining.
My family has a beach house and uses both the deck and the backyard extremely heavily in summer.
So basicallly in my experience people do utilize their outdoor spaces where I live.
seahorseescape@reddit
I lived in the north and south. In the south it’s much more common. Probably because the weathers warmer. But we sit on our back deck more then our porch

Most people don't have a front porch. Back patio or porch is more common. Honestly, unless you are entertaining, cooking out or have outdoor activities, most people sit inside in their A/C.
SpiritedLoquat172@reddit
I have never used the front porch as an adult. There are too many mosquitoes in this area. When I was living with my parents, however, we would sit on the front porch and just enjoy the fresh air. Their house has a nice big lawn with no overgrown plants and stagnate water for mosquitoes to breed.
Accomplished_Dig284@reddit
I used to when I smoked but don’t anymore, it’s fuckin hot where I live.
But I absolutely do sit on the front porch of the beach house. It’s the only place to comfortably hang out because the house is open air with no central AC, so front screened in porch with the breeze off the water is the only comfortable place in the house during the day
thorsbeardexpress@reddit

Dorsai56@reddit
It depends on which direction the porch faces, the time of year, and the weather. And yes, a screened in porch is important in mosquito country.

Our backyard was being dug up, so we spent a lot of time in the front yard. And met all our neighbors and made lifelong friends. Moved to a new state for work and we spend a lot of time in the front yard. Watch the kids ride bikes and again, make friends with neighbors! If you asked me 10 years ago, I would have said no. I’m a convert to front yard hangouts.

I live in a major city and sitting on the front porch people watching is practically a past time around here. Even in apartment buildings people will hang out on the stoop in nice weather.
j33@reddit
I live in a third-floor walk-up and hang out on my balcony facing the street. I have neighbors who sit on their porches and stoops in the nice weather. I get a kick out of the guy a bit up the street who hangs out on his stoop with his rooster (which he is technically not permitted to have in city limits).
Greyface13@reddit
Some people love to sit on the porch and some don’t. Sitting on the porch can be social, like with neighbors. But most adults like to sit on a more private porch
MerryWannaRedux@reddit
Just last night I watch a YT vid about how front porches have been replaced by garages. That's lead to less community involvement.
Cars used to be parked behind the house in a garage. Also, alleys were where the garages were located. People had front porches and would sit out there and enjoy the day. They'd talk to neighbors walking by...maybe invite them up for lemonade or a beer. It all gave a feel of community.
But particularly after WW2, cars became much more popular. They started building communities around having a need for a car. Thus the street garage became the rage.
If you live in a suburb that doesn't have alleys, it's next to impossible to not see a house without a street-accessed garage.
However, "garage sitters" are a thing. They open their garage door and have chairs and sit and drink whatever and talk to whoever walks by. Buy it's still not the same as an outdoor front porch.
Cheezslap@reddit
I'm on my front porch right now, LOL. It's the best place to hang on the weekend. That said, we never used it until I screened it in last year; it's glorious to not be pestered by bugs.

Our front porch is by far the largest 'room' in the house (somewhat comically, it also has the most expensive furniture). We're in a neighborhood of 100+ year old craftsman bungalows - most with large front porches. The houses are close together, and close to the street. Because of all those details, we actually know all of our neighbors, and we all spend time together on the front porch.
My sister owned a similar home (albeit 1400 miles away), and it was seeing how close all of her neighbors were that caused us to look at this neighborhood.
I'm so introverted that if I lived in a 'normal' suburban house, I wouldn't know any of my neighbors.

Good question. The front porch used to be an American institution. People would see neighbors passing and even if they did not stop to speak they would exchange a wave and a smile. Now, Americans have invested large amounts of money in decks, fire pits, grills and entire outdoor kitchens replete with televisions so they can sit in their backyards on pleasant evenings. This is only one factor exasperating the isolation and lack of community tearing apart the fabric of the country.

When I lived on a farm, yeah absolutely. The front porch faced a private garden and it was a great place to hang out and have tea or coffee. Now that I live in a condo, absolutely not--way too public.
My dad, on the other hand, used to be very social with our neighbors back home, and he would always sit on the back porch so he could talk to them. Different strokes for different folks.

I always sit on the front porch. Even now that I only have a stoop, I sit on the steps and put out chairs in the summer. I sit out there most of the late afternoons and evenings all summer, usually for several hours. I much prefer it over the backyard because I like seeing what’s going on and I like to be able to greet my neighbors as they pass by. CGCutter379@reddit
In the southeast US sitting on the front porch was a cultural tradition. All houses had significant sized front porches; then came air conditioning. Over a 15 year period front porches shrank to small ports that would protect you from the rain and wind while you were unlocking the door. Cooking out also helped move people away from the front porch to the back of the house as did swimming pools. Until the early 1960s people sat on the front porch to waive at and talk to people walking by on the road. Cars put an end to that, first from the dust they stirred up, then, after roads were paved, from the isolation that speed provided. They are still used in movies to evoke sentimentalism and to provide characters a venue of social interaction with others like the trope of neighbors entering the house without knocking,

Grew up with a front porch culture - sat out on the swing all the time, with friends or reading by myself. My grandmother had an old church pew on hers, my aunt had streetcar seats... Hell, my first two apartments in my current city had front porches, and I had chairs and a small table on them, and enjoyed them all the time.

Yes, absolutely. Growing up we had a front porch with an awning, and the house had no air conditioning, so most mornings my folks were on the porch reading the paper and drinking coffee, and in the evening they'd sit out there and finish the paper, read a book, my mom might stitch, and the neighbors would come by and chat all the time. If it got really warm I'd sleep out there on occasion. In our current house we have a back porch, and right now my hammock stand is set up there so I lay out there and take meetings sometimes. Our neighborhood has a lot of porches and we've got a social dog so our walks turn in to my dog visiting his fan club.

TrittipoM1@reddit
Do we? Yes, we often do. Of course, it may depend where you are (central urban/smaller city/suburb/rural or which state). Modern tract homes don't often have real "porches."
My current house (the one Hubert Humphrey lived in when he was mayor, built in 1924) doesn't have a "porch" so much as it has a small roofed "stoop." But I routinely sit out on it in good weather to watch the world go by, greet neighbours, enjoy the air, et. And where I grew up in central Indianapolis, I often set on the porches at my house or at either of my grandparents' homes.
It's a strong enough tradition that apartment buildings mostly try to provide balaconies when they can, to serve as a kind of "porch" (although obviously not an entry).

I would argue that front porches are a cornerstone of a good neighborhood in areas where houses are closer to the street. Where I grew up we would sit on the front porch regularly, as would our neighbors, and you would regularly talk to your neighbors walking by on the sidewalk, invite them to hang out on your porch, etc. Walkabiloty + place to be outside near other people = community.

We have decks (no roof) in front of the house and in back. We spend time on both of them, depending on the weather and on "where the action is". We're pretty rural, so it's not people that we watch, but chickens and wildlife.
Growing up in an industrial town in the 1950s, my family sat on the (covered) front porch quite a lot, and sort of exchanged greetings with neighbors going by. Also my Dad and I would sit there to watch thunderstorms. Good memories

I have a front porch, but I’m much more likely to sit on the back porch. I have always wanted a front porch. Unfortunately I only have a short path from door to drive (about 5'). So I use my back porch. Back porch is great when its rally hot out since its shaded in the afternoon. But I would love a sunny spot to sit afterwork for when its cooler out. My house doesn't have enough of a front porch to sit on. We have a back patio. Sometimes we will sit back there, but we don't have anything covering the patio so a lot of times it's too hot or too cold, or it's raining, or there's snow on the patio, or whatever. In the summer, early in the morning before the sun has gotten hot, or in the evening when the sun is on the other side of the house, creating shade over the patio, is when we are most likely to sit back there.

I live in a historic district in an Alabama town. Almost every house has a front porch. On a lovely spring evening, many people are out enjoying libations.
By full summer, we're all inside in front of a fan where we stay until October.
ChapBobL@reddit
Weather permitting, my wife and I have coffee on our porch every evening. Having a porch was one of several things we wanted when we were looking for a house. Sometimes I sit on the porch and play my acoustic guitar. So far I haven't bothered the neighbors!
RobinFarmwoman@reddit
Very regional. In my area, almost all the yards have walls or high fences around them. So even if you want to sit on your front porch, you aren't going to be waving at people in the street. Most of us hang out in the back.
Silver_Breakfast7096@reddit
Back porch here.
icanliveinthewoods@reddit
I do, but at certain times of the year and/or day it can get buggy. In May to early June there are swarms of no see ums (gnats) that descend upon you if you aren’t in motion. After that, they clear up and I’m on my porch as much as possible.
In winter, the porch serves as a sheltered place to hold part of our firewood for our wood stove. We load it onto the porch in late fall, and it’s used up by mid spring, when we put out our front porch furniture.
Traditional_Air6177@reddit
Porch sitting is a thing. My Mom lives in the country. We’ll watch a storm sitting on the front porch. We might normally take a fold out chair to the backyard but in bad weather the front porch is covered. Where you live and how you use your porch can be for different reasons. Some people are watchful over their neighborhood so they might sit on the front porch to watch what’s happening daily. Some porches are large enough for a porch swing and that’s a nice way to relax. Sometimes older people who are less mobile sit on their porch as a way to be outside, say hi to the passing person.
zoop1000@reddit
Where I live, people sit in their open garages. One house has a full set of living room furniture in their garage.

I would describe the idea that everyone does it as outdated but it certainly still happens. Both my current house and my old house didn’t really have a front porch but they had a garage and we’re north facing so it was more comfortable and I would occasionally sit there. Both houses were party in the back though with the pool and screened in enclosure. Florida style.

Adelaar@reddit
Front Porch sitting was a huge thing in the warm summers over most of the US, people would spend time on the porch since it would be breezy and cooler. Once air conditioning was commonplace, the thermal comfort part wasn’t really needed. So they became less common.
Ourcheeseboat@reddit
When at my summer house I spend most of the time on the front porch, in the city, the back porch. Both face west, it might have a lot to do with that.
SkiMonkey98@reddit
It's fairly common still but I think the trope of everyone constantly being on the porch comes from the south before air conditioning was common. It was the coolest place to be -- under shade but still exposed to the wind, and attached to the house if you need anything. Now people will still eat a meal or otherwise spend time out there as kind of a treat, but they're not just living their lives on the porch like they used to
loveshercoffee@reddit
My grandparents had a porch swing on their front porch. They sat in it together almost every night from spring through fall for most of my life. Many of their neighbors did the same.
If I had such a porch, I would certainly put up a swing and enjoy a few quiet minutes as often as possible.
Live-Ad2998@reddit
It depends on where you live. Urbanites rarely have a front porch. In the south, front porches are more common. Actually using the front porch, well I do. But only 3 or 4 houses out of about 49 in my subdivision have front porches.
When you get into poverty ridden areas it isn't uncommon to see sofas in the front porch.
RDCAIA@reddit
I spend equal time on my front porch and my back deck. For me, front porch is for solo sitting with a coffee or cold beverage, maybe reading a book or magazine, and watching cars drive through the neighborhood, and occasionally nodding or waving at neughbors that walk by. Back deck is for cooking and eating or for larger gatherings with friends.
zoonazoona@reddit
It surprised me when we moved here, but yes they do. In general houses are further back from the road here, so less reliance on back gardens than in Europe too.
No-Resource-5704@reddit
When I was growing up in the 1950-60s in the suburbs of the San Francisco Bay Area, we had a sizable covered porch both in front and on the back side of the house. Due to the direction of the setting sun we would often sit on the front porch during the late afternoon as it was too sunny and hot to sit on the back porch. (Insects were rarely a problem.)
When I lived in the north end of the Sacramento Valley it was generally too hot to sit outside most of the year. Later when we were located in a close suburb to Sacramento, many of our neighbors would sit in their open garages (most of the smallish tract houses did not have real front porches).
We now live in a more upscale neighborhood in SW Washington and the houses generally don’t have front porches suitable for sitting but most have covered sitting areas on the back side of their houses (some with built in fireplaces, etc.) So sitting in the back during evenings can be pleasant during summer months when sunset can be quite late in the northern latitude.
Seakrits@reddit
We live in a small town, and in the evening, a lot of people go walking, or families take their kids around on bikes. Our front porch gets more sun in the evening, so we will, on occasion, sit on the front porch and read, talk, etc and wave to neighbors as they go by.
Poolcreature@reddit
There’s a thousand comments so this will probably get buried, but the invention of the a/c disrupted southern culture to such an extent because people were no longer sitting on porches or walking around town for air. Everyone got a/c and we never left our homes again. A very modern southern experience is feeling the crisp air of a Target greet you upon entry on a sweltering summer day.
PastNefariousness188@reddit

It all depends on where you live and your preferences. When I was growing up, my grandparents lived on a major street in Memphis. It was central and busy enough that it was traveled at all hours of the day and night. The street had residential houses with sidewalks and two houses down would be a gas station, restaurant, commercial business, and less than a half mile down the street was a mall. Sitting on my grandparents front porch was some of the best people watching! There was also some kind of weird comfort in the noise and bustle…like you were never lonely with everything going on around you. I wonder if this is why you see mostly older people sit on their front porch nowadays…
anyway, I don’t have the option to do that because I live in a more rural area where the only thing I would see from my front porch is fancy vehicles and people walking their dogs. However, in the south, we do make an exception for tornados. We will stand on the front porch and watch a ‘nado no matter where our house is located!
andmewithoutmytowel@reddit
It's less common now that most people have air conditioning. Most houses by me don't have a front porch, it's more likely that you have a back porch or deck, and we do use ours quite a bit, but it's also covered and has a ceiling fan, so it's usable about 8 months out of the year.
OkConsideration123@reddit
My area doesn’t even have a lot of porches either, but we did have a recent heat wave and I definitely noticed a few people sitting in the front yard in the evenings. One man even got up from his chair to pet my dog on our walk. Air conditioning is not ubiquitous in my town.
slothdonki@reddit
Went to West Virginia once to visit with my now-ex and his parents. They did not have air conditioning so there was a lot of porch-time.
I frequently grew up without electricity too(I think even during that visit) and I often slept on the front or back porch at night during the summer.
farrieremily@reddit
Sleeping porches were a thing!
Mark_Underscore@reddit
Came here to say that before air conditioning, you'd sit on your front (or back) porch in the evenings and wait for the house to "cool down". Right after sundown it would be too stifling hot to sleep inside and so people would hang out on the porch in the cool of the evening while the house cooled off....
Especially if your bedrooms were on the second floor.
I remember when i was a kid in the midwest in the 70's the neighbors had a big screened in back porch and the kids would actually sleep out there during the summer because the house didn't have central air.
Oakland-homebrewer@reddit

Like: WHY do you have this if you’re not going to USE it?
I’ve always wanted to live someplace where people actually used their front porches and would wave to people passing by. I know they do this in the South…

danceswithturtles286@reddit
This might be more info than you asked for but I’m an anthropology nerd so thought I’d chime in. So, yes, porches are still used now, but it’s heavily contextual now and has changed a lot from the past. It’s most common now to see people on front porches in inner-city neighborhoods but not common in the suburbs.
The shift from front porches to private back porches in the U.S. reflects a move from community-oriented living to privacy-focused living. Front porches were an integral part of life in late 1800s to early 1900s, as people sat facing the street, talked with neighbors, and participated in public social life. This was more communal and common across working and middle class neighborhoods. But then cars came into the picture and about 60% of families owned one by 1920 so garages became more important, and then later, automatic garage doors that connected to the house meant you never had to interact with neighbors. Social life then moved behind the house, making gatherings more private, invitation-only, and family-centered.
Consumption replaced casual socializing so instead of chatting with neighbors on the porch, people began buying TVs, backyard grills patios, decks, & pools, and social life shifted from free, spontaneous interaction to planned, consumption-based gatherings.
So architecture essentially shifted from encouraging interaction with neighbors to prioritizing private family space. While I appreciate modern amenities, they tend to pull us further and further apart. I think the U.S. could use one big front porch right now

Was much more common before indoor plumbing. The outhouse (outdoor toilet) was in the back yard, so sitting on the back porch was like loitering outside a restroom (including the smell). Warmer climates tended to have bigger porches with furniture from the days before air conditioning. Before telephones were standard, there used to be a lot more in person visits. A furnished porch provided a space to meet with visitors who you may not want to invite indoors.
JuggernautPast2744@reddit
Many front porches are architectural decoration and are not designed to be comfortably used. I've always understood a porch to be a primarily social space that bridges the private interior with the public street. When a porch is too small for comfortable socializing people don't hang out on them as much. A porch built to the appropriate scale, in a neighborhood built to a matching scale (houses close to the sidewalks, walkable neighborhoods etc...) is likely to be used a lot.
Many suburban lots have houses set well back from the street, without sidewalks, and have tiny front porches. Those don't get used for much more than displaying seasonal decorations.
GoddessOfOddness@reddit
Depends on where and when. Back is more popular, but people do have some furniture on their front porch. It’s more common if the front porch has an overhang so it is shady.
Season and weather vary,
Nyxelestia@reddit
In some parts of the country, it's common; in other parts, it is not. Generally, in places where it's common, it is very common. Conversely, in places where it's not common, one of the reasons for that is often because many or most houses do not even have a front porch (or a comparable substitute) for people to sit on, and hanging around in a public-facing part of your house is odd or unusual in that environment.
BlueFeathered1@reddit
If I had one I'd sit on it. Especially if it was screened. Alas.

You should look into 🇨🇴 porches. They feature heavily in books by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. My bff is half, and brought back a little artisan made porch diorama. But to answer your question, it’s no different than any place with a porch/veranda/deck or even a yard. It’s just an extension of your indoor space. If you’re in a temperate climate and your home has outdoor space, you congregate there 🤷🏻♀️

I remember it in the '70s. I lived in a suburb of Cleveland and very much people sat out on their front porch every evening and talked to neighbors and people went for walks and stopped to talk to everybody. I'm not sure if it was 7 days or if it was Midwest or if it was just that neighborhood though. I've never lived in any other neighborhood where I've experienced that and most people nowadays prefer their privacy and will be in their backyards, not their front yards.

I grew up in a house with a porch, and we sat on the porch swing a lot. This is probably more of a small town thing. I don't think many people do it anymore since a lot of the old houses have been turned into apartments, and most people can't afford to buy a house.

More than the specific location, I think it depends on the age of the housing stock and the degree of heat in the summer.
Pre-air-conditioning homes in hot places often had nice large front porches. I believe it was fairly common to sleep on them when it was hot. Post-AC houses had small, inhospitable front porches or none at all. And I think in places with cool summers like New England it was always less common to have them.
In the last 20 or so years it seems like front porches have made a bit of a comeback, as builders imitate older styles in some neighborhoods.

It definitely depends on where you live within the US even within the same area code, it’s different! Growing up in Arizona it was the patio in the back yard. We lived in a specific horse/cattle property neighborhood with no sidewalks and mostly Spanish style or mid century modern houses in the boundaries of a town. Since there was so much space between homes, being on the patio was mainly for after dad’s work and our homework hangout. Although neighbors out for a walk or riding their horses would stop to give a shout.
In California, yes, absolutely. We’re in a really lovely neighborhood with homes from the early 70s and lots of families and people with dogs taking evening walks. It’s such a relaxing thing to do after we take our dog for her walk just to sit and say hello. And our little corgi is a rescue who lived 7 years of her life as a breeding animal confined to a cage in China, so as she’s learned that people will interact with her, she’s become affection addicted and she must get her daily quota of pets and scratches. She’s something of a little celebrity in the neighborhood and as sweet as a lamb so the babies love her. She never barks or jumps, just sits there and lets them pat-pat-pat her head. Lol

If you have a front porch, yes. In my little town of 1700-2000, we had the best front porch. Right on Main Street, one block from downtown. I have a picture of me and one of my older sisters sitting on the…what’s the word., edge. It’s one of my favorite pictures. A five year old and a fifteen yesr-old hanging out on the front porch together. Watching the town go by.
I have to think the change from front porches to back decks has had a negative effect on society.

My neighborhood used to. It’s a very 1950’s era build and people wandered the streets, sat in lawn chairs, chatted to passersby, it was nice. Now those homes are being demolished at an alarming rate and turned into what I call “screen homes”. They’re huge, big empty rooms, no front or back yards. All that’s left to do is sit inside on a screen. It’s bad and damaging. Buts all about the dollar to square foot and the people that move into them only seem to interact with their neighbors to lodge a 311 complaint.
EMAW2008@reddit

I would say it is a thing in general. I'd wager the vast majority of people who have a front porch in the classic sense do sit out on it from time to time, whether they're an old person and just like to be outside, or a younger person doing homework, or someone who is a smoker. This is location dependent.
In PA, people are constantly outside. On porches. In yards. Just generally chilling outside. When I went for a walk in the evenings, I would be greeted by many neighbors who were just sitting on a swing or rocking chair on the front porch enjoying the evening.
In UT, unless people are partaking in specific outdoor activities, they are not simply chilling on porches or in yards. In twenty years, I have never been greeted by someone chilling on a porch, because I have never seen anyone chilling on a porch.

I'm 50. In the suburb I grew up in, we didn't really have front porches or decks. They were for the backyard.
Several neighbors did put folding chairs in the driveway and sit and chat. As people would take a walk they would stop over and visit for a little while. We were close enough that you could even yell from one driveway to another. Children could play in the street because all the grownups could see them.
I'm guessing that is something both regional and generational.

Not anymore. They're inside binge-watching Netflix or taking cover in the air conditioning because it's 9 o'clock and still 80 degrees outside.
My husband and I would often drive home on beautiful nights, especially in the spring and the fall, down an avenue lined with beautiful, mostly Victorian homes. Each of these homes had beautiful front porches that were beautifully furnished with wicker or wood chairs, tables, pretty lamps, ceiling fans, flowers, etc. like outside rooms. We had driven this route for probably 15 years before he passed away. Not once on any of those beautiful nights did we ever see anyone sitting on their beautiful porches enjoying the fresh air. In the summer, when the air was still hot and smothery, they weren't outside either.
I'm sure some people do still sit on their front porches, judging by the comments here, but it's so very rare in my experience. In my childhood (the 1960s), everyone was out on their front porch or at least out in the back yard keeping cool because there was no air conditioning. Heck, you could follow the Red Sox games by walking down the street and listening to the coverage on transistor radios.

You’re living my dream life in retirement (city person right now). Did you have much experience in carpentry (etc) before starting the project?
zedazeni@reddit
Thanks! All it took was us moving to a fairly low-cost-of-living area for it to happen (we were extremely fortunate that our jobs allowed us to relocate).
To answer your question: no. No prior knowledge whatsoever. We bought a few deck building magazines from Lowe’s and Home Depot and looked up the rest online. To be fair, we were replacing what was already existing. The decking itself was rotten, so laying new decking isn’t exactly rocket science. If we found joists that were rotten, we’d just replace them with new lumber. The difficult part was that our entire roof and part of the 2nd floor is cantilevered over the front porch, so the columns holding up our entire roof were resting on the porch, so figuring out how to replace those without the entire house coming down was…nerve racking.
natigin@reddit
Thanks for the great reply, gives me a lot of confidence!
That’s basically our plan, we’re in Chicago now but hope to retire in either SW Michigan or the Driftless region of Wisconsin where things are affordable and I definitely want a lovely front porch (complete with rocking chair and lemonade).

We have a 140-year old home with a nice wrap around porch, but it faces west so it’s kinda the worst situation sun and heat wise. But we just added a deck onto the back that connects the back door to the kitchen porch/door and the big old house itself keeps it in shade. Our older neighbors sit on their front porch often in the morning and evening when it starts getting warmer.
isittimefordinner@reddit
How does a wrap around porch face 1 direction?
zedazeni@reddit
The front of the house faces southwest, which is the side that has the main part of the porch. The part that wraps around the side is much narrower
dealbreakerstalkshow@reddit
The front of the house faces west, so the main “front porch” part faces west and the rest faces south.

The front of my house faces southwest and we have no trees in our yard nor do any of our neighbors across from us, so we get full afternoon sun. Roy Underhill, the host of The Woodwright’s Shop, a show about traditional carpentry on PBS, did an episode about how European architecture evolved to be distinctly American. He talked about porches separately, because they do not have European roots. They were a feature of traditional African dwellings, and slaves brought to North America added them to their quarters. They then evolved to become a feature of plantation houses, and later a common part of American architecture.

This will depend heavily on region, state, and culture…. I think that’s some more common in rural areas like the Midwest and Southeast.
Growing up in Urban areas in New England, we tend to live in apartments. Now if an apartment has a stoop by the front door, or a balcony, we’ll definitely use it, but what you’re seeing in the movies is likely rural homes with big porches.

I’ve lived in dozens of houses in my life and the only one that actually had a porch where you could set up a couple of chairs wasn’t even in the US lol.
It definitely happens in houses with big porches (though not all) and in some areas big porches are more common, but everywhere I’ve lived, it’s more common to have a small slab of concrete at your front door and we just call that the porch (unless you have big money; I’m just talking about average suburban middle class houses). Some do have chairs in the grass, walkway, driveway, etc. though, especially if you are watching kids play.
A back porch is way more common, and having chairs back there is almost expected.

Front porches are wonderful, but many homes don’t have one. Growing up we had a back patio; as an adult I’ve had back decks. I prefer a back deck for the privacy.
mightknowbackback@reddit
Sitting on my porch right now as I read this. But it’s largely regional. Porches are uncommon some places, but the places where they’re common it’s almost always because they get used.
Icey-Emotion@reddit
If the porch is nice, then yes. And by nice I mean big enough for chairs or a swinging chair and a table.
We don't have that exactly. We have an enclosed porch. We used to sit there, but it became a play area for the kids. We do open the garage and hang out there sometimes though.
Or build a bonfire out back. We live in a rural area and those are always popular.
bearfootin_9@reddit
Sitting on the porch right now. It's raining, we're having a thunderstorm, and the air smells amazing.
heyitslola@reddit
Sitting on the front porch is the best! My favorite thing is to sit out there as a big thunderstorm rolls in.

I've got a nice covered porch attached to my little log home which sits near the top of a western slope in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern California. Oaks, pine, buckeye and manzanita all around. Sutter Buttes in the distance is framed perfectly by closer hills.
How could one not sit on that porch as often as possible. The sunset views are fantastic.
CycadelicSparkles@reddit
A good front porch is not a thing to be wasted. I love sitting out on the front porch.
ChaosTorpedo@reddit
If I had a front porch I would!
draizetrain@reddit
I do, with a lot of bug spray on and mosquito repellent incense.

Yep. Side porch for us in our layout, but same effect. Nice to hang with the neighbors. Garage/driveway hangouts with neighbors are common too.

Social_Introvert_789@reddit
Sitting on our front porch right now! It’s 7:20 pm and there a nice wind blowing and the lawn is green and the flowers are all in bloom. We will sit out here while our dinner digests.
Zivata@reddit
I do sometimes. We have a small hill/knoll on the side of our yard and we put chairs up there. I prefer that seat. My husband calls it "surveying the domain".
Educational-Piece-18@reddit
I usually sit on whatever porch gets the most sunlight. I'm in Alaska, so I'll always use the better weather porch. Then, because I use the better weather orientated one, that one will always get the better upgrades for comfort.
Many of us use the porch/deck that's most comfortable for our needs. In autumn I bought a different house that has front and back doors, with little concrete steps. My plan before winter was to build a front porch, but now that snows melting, I can see what side gets more sunlight. The back deck will be used more frequently, so that one comes first.
GrowlingAtTheWorld@reddit
Why have a porch if not to sit?
fancyface7375@reddit
Lol yes always. We have a giant walnut tree in the front yard with 3 swings hanging from it that our kids and all the neighborhood kids play on and we sit on the porch and watch the kids and chat with neighbors and then inevitable someone brings out a bottle of wine. It's definitely a vibe.

Depends on the house, porch, and neighborhood... But there are literally millions of homes where those things are in alignment with sitting outside being very nice.
A house in my neighborhood converted about half of the yard in front of their home into a flagstone patio with arbor, gas fireplace, and stone seating. That whole street uses their front yard like a public park and they absolutely love it.
Acceptable_Slice_325@reddit
Very few American homes have front porches, very uncommon feature among houses built in the 1970's and onwards, and that's the vast majority of American homes. For older and more rural homes, yeah.
Capable_Suit_7335@reddit
My husband and I always sit on the front porch. In the mid west it’s a very common thing to see and do.
ComprehensiveFun6875@reddit

Sitting on a front porch during a summer thunderstorm while drinking a tasty beverage is heaven. Former Southerner but people here in Colorado do it too. I have my weather app send notifications of incoming rain so I can wrap up what I am doing and grab a drink to be ready, it’s so wonderful.

Love my porch and back patio. Looking forward to building a deck in the fall so I can screen it in to save my skin from the mosquitos.
If the weather is nice, I love starting a fire and sipping on a beer while letting my brain just kind of wander and turn off for a while.

Most older homes have great front porches and are utilized regularly. In my neighborhood, you just holler across the street and someone will come over and have a beer with you.

It depends on where they are and the house style.
I live in the not so nice part of the city and people would think I was crazy if I sat on my porch/front yard. But at my grandparents house in the nicer part of town, we sat on the porch and said hi to everyone that walked by, grandma even knew most of them.
So yes it’s done, but definitely not everywhere

Teri-k@reddit
I sit on the front porch (and the back deck/yard) a lot, in every state I've lived in where I had one. I was out there this afternoon reading and drinking tea. I've done it in Colorado, California, Tennessee, Florida, Virginia.
Nyx_Shadowspawn@reddit
I should put a bench on my porch. My back patio is really nice, I do spend a lot of time on it. It's nice to relax in fresh air. And my neighbors are nice.
Bear_Salary6976@reddit
Houses built after 1990 are a lot less likely to have a front porch. If you are in such a neighborhood with newer houses, then you will likely not see anybody on a front porch. If you are in a neighbor with don't porches, then you are more likely to see some people.
We have no front porch, but many of my neighbors do. When I walk my dog, I often see many neighbors. I would guess that if walk passed 75 houses, and I might see 5 houses with people sitting on the front porch. More if the weather is nice.
Accomplished_Net5601@reddit

I love sitting on my front porch. Sadly, the weather here is such that it's too cold for 6-7 months of the year, and too hot sometimes in the summer. But when the weather is right, it's absolutely glorious.
Hello_Badkitty@reddit
We get nice afternoon sun on our back deck... so many afternoons I am there watching the kids play outside. We added a catio last year, so now the cats also get to lounge in the sunshine!
Available-Egg-2380@reddit
Very much so. I will take my monthly team meeting out on my porch in the summer. We also have a nice area in the backyard I'm in pretty much daily (and nightly cause we put a tent out and sleep in the yard regularly). Paid a lot for every square inch of this place, I'm gonna use every square inch.
lava6574@reddit
NYC suburb, the Very Old Lady who lived down the block til she moved to assisted living last fall would sit in a lawn chair and just people watch for hours. Several dogs on the block, several small kids, lots of us would stop and say hello. Great way for her to keep from being too isolated while her kids live in the city (1) or across the country (2-3, I forget). If I wasn’t chasing one of those small kids I’d be sitting outside too. But I have too much to do lol.

Are you kidding? If you've got a good porch you're gonna take advantage. Got yourself a swing? Forget about it.
Don't forget about the deck in the backyard. That's probably more common since it's more private. It's like a porch in the backyard, but it's usually bigger and has a grill.
HooksNHaunts@reddit
On the 3 days a year the weather is good enough to sit outside without dying, yes.

I have a nice back deck with a fire pit for more privacy.

I’m out there right now buddy! Well, I don’t have a big porch, so I made an alcove in my front garden and put chairs out. It’s perfect in spring and fall, but I can only use it at night or early morning in summer (southern USA).
dobbydisneyfan@reddit
Mostly folks in rural communities will sit out there in good weather. Where I live, a lot of us have front porches. But I live in a somewhat shady part of town in a tenement home. The front porch, I’m not sure, is even mine to use. It might only be for the unit it’s directly attached to, I don’t know.
Cold_Elk947@reddit
I sit on the deck in the backyard. I have a table with an umbrella and chairs. Around 5pm, I sit out there, let my dogs run around, smoke my joint (it’s legal where I live), and just unwind. I love spending time in the backyard even if it’s just doing absolutely nothing.
dannicalliope@reddit

Main_Patient4885@reddit
My front porch is on a busy street (Philadelphia) so unfortunately it’s not very relaxing unless it’s late at night or during a storm. The backyard is much, much quieter and the layout of our block and houses actually blocks much of the street noise

VulpineWelder5@reddit
It depends largely on two things: region and demographic. Most people around me barely spend time outside at all. Most younger people tend to stay inside behind a screen and the older ones are who you mainly see sitting on the porch or walking. A lot of people also tend to relax in the back to keep to themselves because so many around me are antisocial and hate interacting with other people.
I personally enjoy sitting on the porch on a nice day with a nice coffee, whiskey, lemonade or cigar. I don't spend much time doing it though because I get lonely.
Trinx_@reddit
I don't do it myself, and my family doesn't. I don't see much of it. Occasionally I'll see people in Chicago on their stoops, but not so much in the north neighborhoods.
ChainWise6768@reddit
My intuition is that Americans have more porches so that's why they spend so much time sitting on front porches. Europeans tend to have doors right at the sidewalk with a back garden. Pacific Islanders tend to have the entire front of their house be halfway outdoors, so technically they hang out on their front porch all the time, so much so that it's fully furnished as a part of the home.
Karamist623@reddit
I lived in Philly with my grandparents. No front porch, but a nice yard and steps. Everyone would sit on their steps in the evening.
I lived on a rural road in NJ, we primarily used the back porch because that’s where the kids played, but I would have used the front porch if the kids were older.

I don't have a front porch on my house. I actually don't know anyone with a front porch. My mom has a concrete pad in the front of her house with some chairs that she sometimes sits on. We all sit on our decks, which are in the back of our houses, most often.

Much less now than before air conditioning became common. It used to be sorta mandatory while the house cooled off in the evening. Now with the AC cranked it’s cooler in the house than outside.

It's very region dependent. I live in the desert southwest so many people have an "Arizona room" which is basically a screened in porch that often has misters and fans. It gets too hot to just sit outside. We also have a lot of flying dust which screens help with.

When I was a kid, my family did spend time on our porch pretty regularly. I lived in Alabama at the time, and when the humidity eased up on summer evenings, we'd sit out there for a while.
Birdywoman4@reddit
Before air conditioning was so common they did it quite a bit, maybe have an iced tea or lemonade too. The house may have been warm after cooking dinner and after the kitchen was cleaned up they sat out on the porch. If they lived in a small town there would be others going for a walk and they’d be greeted and maybe chatted with. Back then there was maybe 3 channels on TV so not much variety. Getting outdoors in the cool of the evening was refreshing.

Depending on your house, it may be your front porch, back porch, or a side door porch. It’s fairly common though.
I live in a slightly rural area and it’s not uncommon to see neighbors sitting on their porch at least once or twice a week in warmer seasons.
I sit out on my back porch once or twice a week, my wife does as well. Our dogs are always out with us when we do this.
My parents and grandparents sat out on their porches regularly and would often have a small radio out with them so they could listen to news, or sporting events.

Front porch, no. Now my back porch? All the time. I'll sit out there during summer afternoons and have a drink while my wife lays in a hammock and reads. Or we'll light a fire and sit and watch a movie on my laptop and eat hot dogs and smores in the fall.
Far_Shop_3135@reddit

I live in a subdivision where ever single house has a front porch. Most of these porches have nice seating, but I can't remember the last time I've ever seen anyone actually sit outside.
I do have a back porch where I sit occasionally, but the problem with living in the Southeast is that it's covered with a thick layer of pollen during those perfect temperature months where it's not too cold and not too hot and humid.
Fun_Independent_7529@reddit
Regional, I think. My neighborhood and surrounding areas don't have that kind of porch. New builds tend to be in winding cul-de-sac type areas, also with no porches.
Older homes in Tacoma & parts of Seattle might have porches though. Don't think I've ever seen anyone sit out on one.

Betorah@reddit
I dig in my back deck. I don’t have a front porch, just a front stoop.
calcato@reddit
Backyard more than front porch, for me, at the moment. It really depends on how close the neighbors are, or how close the public right-of-way (sidewalk or parking) is; or even, are there plants/trees that block the view into your space.
I have also lived places where the front porch was further away (or at least, more blocked-off from view by plants) from all that than the back yard was. Back yard was more space but also way more visible because it was right by everyone's parking spaces. So, yeah, it just... depends on factors you cant foresee until you are in the space.

When I lived in Seattle, in several neighborhoods full of front porches, no one used them. All the houses were built between about 1910 and 1925 approximately. Well-maintained, good neighborhoods. Seattle, though, is known to have a very reserved culture. Generally speaking, people aren't outgoing and friendly, unless meeting through an activity or club of mutual interest. Even neighbors aren't "neighborly" with each other, for the most part.

My current porch is only large enough to take off/ put on shoes. But in my house in DC I sat out in the evenings and had a drink and smoked a cigar (back when I smoked) every evening. My house in college had a great huge front porch that we used to use regularly. So yes, when the porch is large enough to accommodate we often enjoy it.
Spudtater@reddit
In the Midwest, they were much more common in houses built in the late 1800's up until the 1930's or so. I think, with the lack of air conditioning, it gave people a refuge from the warmer indoor spaces during the Summers. I grew up in a home that had a large screened-in front porch. I loved the place and would even sleep out there during the Summer at times when I was a kid. We would often eat lunch out there too. Interestingly, there has has been a revival of them in some newer neighborhoods in my city, although most are not quite as large as many were in the past.

When it’s warm I enjoy days on my porch. Shotgun in my lap too… well not always. Just when I’m cleaning it lol

My friends and I hang out on the porch, sipping adult beverages quite often.
MontanaLady406@reddit
Yup, my husband and I usually sit on the front porch and watch the sunset on nice evenings. We have a creek and park across the street with a lovely view.
OrganizationSouth481@reddit
I do when I’m doing yard work in the front of the house. I’ll take a break and sit there for a bit and just enjoy the day with a water.
More likely to be sitting outside in the back though. With the BBQ and the pool and the dogs.
Gibbie42@reddit
Many years ago Mr. Gibbie and I had a friend who ran an Internet radio station and we would drag a laptop out to the porch, put his station on and sit and listen and spend the evening. My father made adirondack furniture for the porch when we first moved in. We don't use it much anymore. We should start again.
My across the street neighbors sit in their driveway when the weather is nice. One day I looked out and four or five of the men in the neighborhood were all standing on the across the street neighbor's driveway, drinking beer and hanging out, King of the Hill style.
einsteinGO@reddit
We certainly did when I was growing up
Now I live in apartment in Los Angeles, but if I was a kid or visiting a family house back east or in Michigan, sure
The other option is making yourself scarce in the back yard or roaming lol. At least on your porch you can go back in for more snacks
Jumpy-Cranberry-1633@reddit
We do when it’s nice out. I’m actually very excited for the weather to get nice enough for me to give it a good power washing so my husband and I can enjoy our late spring/early summer drinks on the porch after the kiddo goes to bed.

My best friend has a front porch and we refer to sitting out there with some beers or cocktails "American dreaming"-- yes as a verb. Like she'll ask "do you wanna come over and American dream later?" It's silly and one of our favorite things to do.

When I was a kid I loved the front porch swing. One of my apartments had a back porch, and I put a hammock out there and slept there on hot summer nights (no ac for me then).

Question: Is the front porch an American thing? Do other countries not have big front porches? There's really nothing like a wrap around front porch on an American four square house in an older neighborhood.

For us it’s the deck (backyard) instead of the front porch. My dream home has a big wrap around porch though.

I don’t now because it’s not a covered porch. When I used to live somewhere with a covered porch I used it all the time. I always loved to sit out there when it was raining, always so peaceful. It was nice on summer evenings when the house was hot, but it was starting to cool outside

Sitting on my magnificent porch now. In the Midwest, as soon as it gets warm enough, we pull the covers off the porch furniture put the cushions out and start enjoying it. It’s so peaceful. It’s one of the best features of our 120 year old house!

Depends on climate, region, social class, neighborhood, and a bunch of other variables. In my small town I'd say 2/3 of all the homes have "two chairs and a table" on their front porch or patio, including ours. When the weather is nice people will indeed sit out there and wave to passers-by. Years ago, when I lived in a house with a full, covered porch we had a swing and we'd hang out there almost every evening in the summers.

This is a neighborhood-specific activity. If you live in a community where people are generally sociable and know each other, front porches are put to good use. If you live in a community where everyone keeps to themselves, front porches are generally not utilized. The point of a front porch is to socialize with your neighbors, so it really depends on how sociable your neighbors happen to be.

It's been my experience that it depends on where you live. First house? Not really; we didn't even have a rocking chair for it, as it was just big enough for the entryway and not much else. Second house, while there's a wraparound porch, never really did. House I'm in now? Occasionally; there's 2 rocking chairs and a bench. On a good day with a breeze, it's sometimes nice to sit out there with a cup of coffee and knit or crochet.

Americans enjoy hanging out and relaxing on the porch. My home has a nicer back patio. But, homes with great porches in front are nice as you get to interact with more of your neighbors.
Whether sitting out front or back, it helps us to get some fresh air, connect with the environment & community. Similarly, we like to walk around our neighborhood for an added bit of exercise. These are common things to do after a nice meal with family or friends. We move outside with drinks on the patio/porch or go for a walk around the neighborhood.

Here in the South, many of us embrace the PorchCouch.
I'd never seen it before living here but it seems if you have a covered porch, some old spare couch inevitably gets set out on it. It's ugly and torn up and full of pollen and regret, and yet probably the comfiest place to watch the world go by.
Is the fabric weatherproof? Of course not, this thing is a hideabed from the 70s.
Do roaming cats piss on it? Most likely, but they do it at night when I'm not around.
Does it stink? Surprisingly no, and yet each one smells gently different
Critters living in it? Possibly, spiders for sure. If you're worried about snakes, give it a little kick.
Do you like pollen? Because it loves couch fabric and you by proxy.
But there's no better place to watch a thunderstorm
have a cup of something delicious and reflect on life
talk about how much we needed this rain
or get set up to shoot a tornado with your rifle
I'm moving soon and PorchCouch is one thing I will genuinely miss.

Americans love sitting outside. A covered porch is nice because it protects from the sun and rain, making it very nice for use in 3 seasons.
Those that don't have porches often have a patio or deck out back or will sit in the garage with the door up or in the driveway.
In my neighborhood, sitting in the front of the house is more typical if you want to be part of the community. It's a virtual invitation for the neighbors to come chat.
Sitting in the back of the house is for when you want privacy or to escape the hustle of the neighborhood.

Our front porch is an awkward size, it’s big but not really big enough for two chairs or a swing without blocking the door. We often sit directly on the concrete when taking a break from yard work. Otherwise, we’re always outside on the huge back patio, enjoying my flower beds that take up the rest of the space that isn’t the massive patio.

We have a back screened porch with a roof, and a small round table where we eat almost all meals when warm enough. I have it set up with houseplants and a small tabletop fountain. I sit out there to read sometimes, too. Our front porch is a small deck with no roof. I put big pots full of annuals on the steps, and in fall, mums and pumpkins, so I'd rather hang out out back-- plus it's quieter! We live on a semi-country road

Some neighborhoods are front porch communities and others are back porch communities. Generally, front porch communities tend to view themselves as deeply connected to their neighbors whereas back porch communities tend to value their privacy and choose who they invite to socialize. When the weather is nice we do. My wife will sit on the front porch and watch me mow the grass, and afterwards I’ll join her and admire my lawn. Also for Halloween.
Patient-Ad-7939@reddit
I see people do it, but not like ridiculously common. Like a 200 home neighborhood might have 5 people sitting on their porch in my area.

Used to be. TVs have radically changed behaviors, so most folks sit inside and watch TV, rather than hang out on a porch and watch folks walk by.

It's pretty common for us rural folk. We often install benches or hanging porch swings for that purpose.

I don't have a porch. It's more like a front patio (same level as the front lawn, no step up). The house is north-facing, so I get shade all day. I have a small table and 2 chairs where I can drink my morning coffee.
Vyzantinist@reddit
I love my porch. It might be crappy as far as porches go but it's so relaxing to sit outside, in the shade, and watch the world go by.

Depends on the weather, the neighborhood, the neighbors, the view, and the porch.
People will do it if all of the above are good...and they aren't wanting to sit in front of a screen. Honestly I don't think all of those come up too commonly anymore, but there are still some porch sitters including (rarely) me.

If I had a front porch to sit on I would. I pay way too much for a crap apartment. I like to sit on my back deck/balcony quite a bit in the summer.
Eastern_Labrat@reddit
Yes. Lots of people do. But we have a BIG front porch and a beautiful view. I also love being outside during thunder storms and my kids say some of their best memories are on the porch. But when I lived in the city I also sat on porch. As a kid in suburbs we sat on our porch a lot too. Neighbors would come by and chat. But lots of other neighbors had porches they never used. However, now I don’t have a good porch so I sit in my garage near the door opening.
RIPdon_sutton@reddit
Screened in front porch equals no mosquitos. Me and the boys like to play poker and drink beer on Saturday nights. Braves on the radio, cool breeze, neighbors dropping by, kids playing in the street…living in Georgia in the early spring is, I must say, quite nice.
Calinthalus@reddit

We have a front porch with a bench. We use it about once a year. Someone stops by, it's nice out, instead of inviting them in, you both sit down and chat.
But most of the time, we socialize indoors or outside by the pool or in the gazebo.

Sure, why not? I wouldn’t say everyone does it but if you have a porch it’s likely to see some ‘get off my lawn’ action.

Its especially common when the weather is really nice out or in situations where the power goes out in the summer.
I would imagine it was more common before homes had air-conditioning.

My parents just built a house in the country, Mom had a wrap around porch put on and they do sit outside on nice days. Dad likes to listen to the birds and the wind in the trees. It’s really neat when the humming birds are around. They dart from feeder to feeder and fight over them.

That said, if I had a covered front porch I would have a rocking chair to watch the thunderstorms every time

Varies wildly by region and neighborhood if people use their front porch or stoop, where they can see people pass by, or the back of the house (yard, deck, patio) for more privacy. Some places people drive straight into their garage and close the door so you never see them. Other neighborhoods people greet each other every day. Even some cities people in apartments bring chairs out front to the sidewalk. Other cities it’s totally empty except entering and leaving. When people relocate it’s something you have to figure out. Some people really like the community feeling, others like anonymity so if it’s a mismatch it can be hard to adjust.
Dusty_Old_McCormick@reddit
My front porch isn't much to shout about, just a narrow strip of cement with a small roof overhang. The morning sun hits it pretty strongly and will roast you in the Houston summertime. Limp-Strawberry-5830@reddit
I mean, it’s not uncommon and other people sit on their back porch
It depends on the neighborhood and the porch
In my neighborhood, there’s let me think
There’s at least two guys who are both retired who sit kind of in their driveway, maybe partially in their open garage with the garage door up and seemed to like talking to people walking by
There’s a family whose kids always play in their front yard, which is fine but it always surprises me because I thought it would be easier in their backyard, but I’ve never been back there. It’s fenced in so maybe it’s a mess.
bonzai113@reddit
Yes, I sit out on my front porch. There are two very nice rocking chairs on the front porch that my wife and I like to relax in.
the__moops@reddit
We don’t have a front porch at all, really. Just a covered alcove that leads to the front door.
Ashamed_Blackberry55@reddit
My favorite time to sit on the porch is at night while watching a thunder and lightening storm. But I do enjoy it other times as well, I was recently looking at a new comfy chair to put on my porch so I could enjoy it even more this year.
Dazzling-Astronaut88@reddit
Sometimes, you’re in a front porch mood, sometimes you’re in a back porch mood. Orientation to the sun can be a big factor. For example, a north facing front porch may not be ideal for winter, but great for summer. It’s varied quite a bit from house to house for me. For example, on a busy street, the front porch can suck. Or, if you, say, live in Midtown Memphis, you may attract too many crackhead randos who want to strike up a convo and attempt to a hustle. I once had a drug dealing neighbor or who sat on his front porch seemingly 24/7.
latin220@reddit
My grandmother in Puerto Rico would watch the kids pass her by from her porch and greet the priest as well as the passerby. Sometime in the 40’s or 50’s, our porch had windows and a door installed so it’s more of a vestibule now, but yes! Every night we sit out there, play scrabble, drink a cocktail and wave to the doggies being walked.
I set the room up for games during the Covid sequester and it really helped our mental health. It’s our nightly ritual now.
atomfullerene@reddit
This is more of a historical trope than a modern day one, if you see it in a movie, it's quite likely the director is trying to create a feel of a bygone era, when life was slower. Older American homes often had big front porches and smaller front yards, which helped out in an era when AC didn't exist and cars were either not invented or just rarer. They let people hang out in a cool shady area and talk to people passing by. It's less common nowdays, but certainly not that unusual for people who live in houses with good front porches. These days people are more likely to spend time in the back yard though, and houses are built to reflect this.
MassConsumer1984@reddit
Some people do. Depends on the porch and the direction of the sun. My front porch is the shady side, so we don’t sit there much, we sit in the back where the sun is. Many of my neighbors sit on their front porches. They are not in the cold shade. I also live in the suburbs.
diversalarums@reddit
It's only a thing in certain regions due to regional differences in housing styles. There are a lot of different types of houses built in the US and in many areas houses generally don't have porches at all. Where I live the majority of houses are built of concrete block and porches are pretty much non-existent.
shibby3388@reddit
Why would it be a movie trope? Don’t people in the rest of the world enjoy sitting outside in the shade when it’s nice?
If an American has a porch, they’re gonna sit on it.
Wageslave645@reddit

Very common in the south. Traditional Southern houses had large front porches and people would sometimes sleep there when it was hot.
East coast cities have stoop life which is basically the same but without the actual porch.

I think it's a regional thing. Seems popular in the south where a lot of old homes have wraparound porches and neighbors still stop by unannounced.
But for us, why would we sit on the front porch when we have a back patio? To watch the neighbors and delivery trucks drive by? We hang out back and watch our dogs play and eat out there when the weather is nice.
Loud_Inspector_9782@reddit
Our front porch is not that large. The back porch and patio are large so that's where we sit and/or eat.

BamaSef@reddit
It depends. In the south where I live, “porchin it” is definitely a thing. The front porch or the back depends, usually we porch it on whichever one is nicer or has a better view. In the summer here a screened in porch with a fan is ideal, keeps out most of the bugs and blistering heat.
Old people usually like to sit on the front porch and drink sweet tea and wave at the neighbors driving by. My 80 year old uncle does this just about every day, for hours. People my age (early 30s) usually like to sit on the back porch and drink beer, shoot the shit, and listen to some tunes. One of my buddies lives on a lake nearby, and his back porch overlooks the water. We’ll have “porch parties” ranging from just me and him to several people. Drinking beer, grilling some smoked sausage and burgers, jamming to tunes, and waving to boaters as they float by.
We definitely appreciate a good porch, at least in the American South. Thank you for coming to my porch ted talk.

SaintsFanPA@reddit

Help1Ted@reddit
Yeah, it seems like a regional thing. I’ve noticed other comments mentioning the same thing. A few weeks ago I noticed my neighbor using the front door and jokingly told my wife that they’ve been replaced by robots because they’ve never used that door before. I think at one point they even had a big chair in front of it.
SaintsFanPA@reddit
I believe it stems from the fact that most of the homes had the main living space off the front door and given the havoc salt, snow, and mud wreak on traditional wood flooring, you didn't want it being tracked through the house, so you either had a purpose-built mud room or space set aside at the back door to take off your shoes.
Help1Ted@reddit
Oh yeah! That definitely makes sense.
IceAcceptable2971@reddit

My grandfather lived in a small house in a small town in Mississippi. Sitting on the front porch was his main entertainment. He knew everyone in the neighborhood, and they would stop by and chat. I just bought a house with a front porch. I put a porch swing out there and I love to sit on it. I love a cup of tea while the rain falls on my front porch. I love to sit out there while my kids play in the yard. I love to wave to the neighbors as they pass by. It’s the best.
Bird_Watcher1234@reddit
When I was growing up it was extremely common. I’m a 49 yr old Florida (Tampa) native and I grew up in an older, poor neighborhood where many people did not have air conditioning. Some didn’t have TVs either and definitely not cable. Most had swings or benches on their front porches to sit on with their sun sweet tea and cigarettes.
Now I rarely see people on their front porches. My next door neighbor sometimes sits with her other neighbor on one of their porches but not often and the guy across from me keeps his garage door open and has a TV out there and sits in a lawn chair and drinks beer and watches sports.

I think it depends on the age of the neighborhood. Older houses tend to have bigger front porches, I think. Where I live (urban Oregon) the houses around here don't have spacious front porches, just a covered area to stand out of the rain while opening the door, maybe 2m x2m or 3x3.

It depends on where they live. If they live in a suburban neighborhood where they’re gonna be on display for all the neighbors, they might not. They might use their back porch instead. If they live in the country, they’re much more likely to use the front porch I think. But it can go the opposite way. It’s really common to sit on the stoop in big cities like New York. In that case, it’s more of a social thing than sitting on your porch out in the country. Also, it can really vary depending on the person. Some people just aren’t outdoor people.

Yeah, it's nice. I have a greenway in the back and a front porch. We all kinda go out when the weather is nice and wave to each other or whatever. Since I'm in a townhouse, I call it the "throne of judgement" but just for fun.
I think this is not unique to America. Although when I lived in some Arab-Islamic countries, it was much more private, whereas when I lived in Amsterdam, it was much more public.
Then_Body844@reddit
I would say yes. Even those that don’t have a porch, I’ll see sitting in a lawn chair in their driveway to enjoy nice weather.
WritPositWrit@reddit
When i was little and visited my grandmother’s house the next town over, we spent a lot of tine just sitting on her front porch (unless it was really hit, then we sat put back under the tree)
I wish i had a front porch.
WokeUpIAmStillAlive@reddit
If the weathers nice, then yeah
LawfulnessAware8410@reddit
I sought out a house with a covered front porch because I love rain and storms and I want a good seat, plus for shade in the summer. I use it constantly
Weird_Squirrel_8382@reddit
I grew up with Southern transplants to the Midwest. They loved sitting on their porch. I wish I had one but they're not standard in my neighborhood, so I'm gonna have to build one.
I can't tell you the last time I heard of someone building a front porch, but people are often excited to build or update the back patio or deck. I suspect people who like a front porch look for houses where they're included.
And that might also include the neighborhood culture. My grandparents neighborhood is gentrified now, and I remember seeing a bunch of new people go past with their heads down like they were avoiding any of the old heads saying "hey baby how you doing?"
Brunbeorg@reddit
I have a patio, rather than a porch, but I absolutely sit on it if weather allows. I'll sometimes sit out there and read, or just enjoy my coffee and meditate. I'll even work outside (writer, so I can work anywhere) sometimes if the weather's particularly nice.
Never occurred to me that this would be a particularly American thing, but then, I think even in somewhat urban areas, we tend to have more area to our yards than in some other countries.
Pristine_Cicada_5422@reddit
We have a small front porch, so there’s a comfortable hanging chair out there. It hardly gets used, though, since we added a 16x24 foot patio out back.
adeadlydeception@reddit
I sit on my front porch whenever the weather is nice
Exlanadre@reddit
Coffee on the front porch is a nice way to spend a morning in the Spring and Fall
GrannyTurtle@reddit
My daughter adores sitting on her BACK porch. I only know one family which sits on their front porch.
9for9@reddit
When I had a house with a porch I did. We had an enclosed front porch and back deck. I loved to use both during the summer and fall. The enclosed front porch was furnished with a sofa and end tables and and the back deck had a table with an umbrella and chairs. It was lovely and I always enjoyed using them.
Broke_Pigeon_Sales@reddit
Yep. If we have a decent porch we do some sittin’ there.
ManateeNipples@reddit
I sit on my front porch all the time in the summer, I have hummingbird feeders and plants all over like a little jungle and it's awesome. I have neighborhood with nice big porches and have never seen them sitting on them
SgtSausage@reddit
We used to.
CheesE4Every1@reddit
Hell yeah, The porch is the place to be when you're mowing or just want to enjoy the day and people watch.
Storage-Helpful@reddit
I don't have a porch period where I'm at right now, and I miss it desperately. Growing up we spent more time on the porch than inside, three seasons of the year
Ok-Educator932@reddit
If you don’t have a porch sometimes you sit in your driveway or on your roof or in your garage with the door open
Sad_Internal_1562@reddit
We sat on it. Warm summer evenings.
OkRub5011@reddit
On the weekends my parents can sit on the front porch for an hour a day. They go out and talk to each other while drinking tea, smoothies, or coffee. Sometimes they talk to neighbors they know who pass by.
funklab@reddit
Not in the south where I live. Few sizeable front porches to begin with, but there’s like 7 weeks of nice weather. The rest of the year it’s either chilly or 95 degrees (35C) and humid.
Responsible-Read-468@reddit
I love my front porch. We have a little table with two chairs. Porch swing. It’s covered. Love sitting out there when weather allows it. Having plants out.
I love my deck too.
outdatedelementz@reddit
I don’t sit on my front porch much, but I sit on my back porch everyday if the weather is nice.
Individual_Check_442@reddit
Not very often, it’s more of a little courtyard than a porch but the back yard is a lot better and more private and faces the right direction in terms of sun and wind.
kaykenstein@reddit
Im sitting on my front porch rn writing this lol
peabody_soul109@reddit
No it’s true. People seek houses specifically with porches.
EducatedCynic@reddit
I'm on mine right now.
Still_a_skeptic@reddit
The 12 days a year the weather is right for it.
knifeyspoonysporky@reddit
It really depends on where you live. I don’t use mine much, but when my kid is older and out riding bikes/chalking up the sidewalk I’ll probably hang out on the front porch more to keep an eye on her.
For now, the back Porch in the backyard is my spot of choice. A nice enclosed grassy backyard.
perpetuallyhuman@reddit
I've never had a sittable front porch but I've always wanted one. With a hanging/swing seat, ideally.
Inconveniently, I'm married to a non-American and the idea of people looking at him from the street (on the porch or through windows) horrifies him.
skeptical_hope@reddit
I only have a back patio at the moment, but I dream of having a full wraparound porch someday and when I do, I will basically live out there on any decent day of weather.
I still spend a lot of time sitting on my front stoop, even without a porch. Porch sitting is a top 10 recreational activity for me!
Mysterious_Dish8851@reddit
I practically live on my front porch
OneNerdyLesbian@reddit
It's pretty common to sit on your porch when the weather is nice in my neighborhood, but I imagine this varies a lot across the US.
Sitting on your porch an easy way to spend time outdoors and get fresh air, and you have shade when the sun is strong.
My2026GV70@reddit
50 years ago maybe.

Love my porch, I’m up on hill. Every big storm my fam goes out and enjoys the porch.
ATLien_3000@reddit
If you have a porch, you damn well better use it.
eugenesbluegenes@reddit
When I lived in a house with a nice covered porch, I would sit out there often.
210poyo@reddit
On my days off I take my coffee on the front porch before the day gets started a few days a week. During the fall, my wife and I will enjoy a drink or two occasionally on the front porch in the evenings.
SnooSquirrels4991@reddit
Sometimes we hang out in the garage. We drink beer and pretend to work on things.
stellarreject@reddit
my back porch is better suited then my front porch, but we use it like a second living room.
gruntharvester92@reddit
In Michigan, the front porch was common pre World War 2. You will often see them on older houses, commonly from those built in the late Victorian wra (1900-1920s).
Post World War 2 and with th4 onset of suburbia, the fornt pourch went away with in favor of a back yard and privacy. Think of Levitt houses on small 1/8 to 1/4 acre parcels, with the stereotypical white picket fence. (Google "leave it to beaver house").
NoTime4YourBullshit@reddit
When the weather is beautiful outside in the spring and fall, I love sitting outside on the porch. I also love watching a good thunderstorm from the porch.
fakesaucisse@reddit
Front porches aren't super common where I live (PNW) but it's pretty common to sit on a back patio or balcony if you have one. The nice weather days here are absolutely amazing and most people want to enjoy it as much as possible.
eyjafjallajokul_@reddit
I definitely do
Tinkerfan57912@reddit
if you have a porch people use it
LankyJeep@reddit
I like my front porch, it’s especially nice when a storm is rolling through because it gets nice and cool
N_Huq@reddit
So excited for it to get warm enough for consistent porch use up here. Front porch with privacy trees + a swing + a drink in hand = peak summer for me.
HairyDadBear@reddit
I have seen people sitting in their front porches in pretty much every region.
ToastMate2000@reddit
Yes, it's common.
I don't have a front porch, but I sit in the swing on my balcony a lot when the weather is nice. I like to enjoy the fresh air and listen to the birds while I read.
ghost-girl-7575@reddit
Most of us can't afford homes with front porches but if I had one, I'd be sittin my ass out there all the time LOL
AndrasKrigare@reddit
Depends a lot on the region. I lived in a very small town in a rural area for a while, and there were a couple of houses with elderly people who would sit out on their front porch all day, just waving and nodding as people drive/walk by.
Now I'm in the suburbs and front porches in general are pretty rare; folks mostly have back porches if anything.
And I hadn't thought about it until now, but I definitely feel of vibe that it someone is on their front porch, I feel comfortable giving a little wave or a chat or something. But when someone's on their back porch, unless I know them, it feels more polite to pretend I can't see them; almost feels like looking in through someone's window.
Ok-Energy-9785@reddit
Some do
alexthagreat98@reddit
Yes, especially if you live in the south east where it gets humid. Yes, AC exists, but some people may not have well ventilated homes or want to save money. The porch allows you a sheltered place to cool off, especially in the evenings.
mommawolf2@reddit
I'm a porch sitter. It's great. Especially with a glass of sweet tea or lemonade.
Guachole@reddit
Yep. First 70 degree day out here, I been on my deck all day and so has my neighbor! Common all summer long
Cock--Robin@reddit
Great place for cocktails when the weather is nice.
BjornAltenburg@reddit
In the summer on a nice day, of course. Retires south of the mason Dixon line sometimes are relgious about being outside on the porch a few hours a day.
Weather and climate matter a lot in the culutre. Being from North Dakota originally you are really only getting maybe 2 good weeks of Weather a year, and relaxing on the porch is pretty limited to summer and fall.
Meowmeowmeow31@reddit
In my neighborhood, we do. It’s mostly row homes, and you can chat with your neighbors while sitting on your porch.
Content-Dealers@reddit
I mean... I have a nice front yard. Why not?
kograkthestrong@reddit
A factor in my buying my current home was the front porch.
Love it.
Green_Evening@reddit
It's kind of rare where I live. I used to, but I was like the only one. New Englanders are relatively private people, compared to other places.
bboymixer@reddit
Absolutely real. Not everyone does it, but it's extremely common.
We've got a few comfy porch chairs out along with our BBQ. Now that it's spring, it's very common to cook and eat outside.
judgingA-holes@reddit
Most that have a front porch do use it for sitting out when the weathers nice, especially if they have company.
killingourbraincells@reddit
Pretty common where I'm at, if you have one. Think most still prefer the backyard tho.
Even some crust punk houses I've been to do it. Sofa on the front poor. Drink beers.
Stressed_C@reddit
People still do, of they have a porch and its nice weather. From about mid-spring to mid-fall my grandfather was always on the porch watching the birds or just reading a book or the newspaper.
sabatoa@reddit
I do in the summer. It’s a nice covered porch and a peaceful neighborhood in a small town.
Usually with a cold drink by my side.
