Movie suggestions for genre: “80s Problematic”
Posted by CinnamonDish@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 1107 comments
I’m a member of a movie-watching group. We gather in someone’s place every other Wednesday to order in, watch a movie together, and generally yell at the screen, groan and heckle.
Having completed our last genre “DC Extended Universe” we are looking for our next theme.
I suggested “80s Problematic” and since it was unanimously approved, I’m responsible for putting together our watchlist.
The best part? Most of the group is late 30s or early 40s at best. They literally have never seen Revenge of the Nerds or Breakfast Club.
So…. What’s do we think should be on the watchlist?

Dirty Dancing
CaptainSneakers@reddit
Sixteen Candles. I rewatched it recently and just cringed the entire movie.
Teal-Prowler505@reddit
What? Why? It's hilarious!
Is it the "chinaman" thing? I guess I could see that as problematic.
ImGumbyDamnIt@reddit
You have a problem with Long Duk Dong?
Teal-Prowler505@reddit
What? Me? Dude, the Donger is legend in my book.
I'm just trying to understand what is "problematic" with the movie... I was just trying to guess that maybe calling the Donger a "chinaman" was problematic to the redditor I replied to.
EMPI2817@reddit
Isn't that the one where the popular girl is unconscious and gets passed off to someone she can't consent to?
Demonae@reddit
It's the one where the drunk girl gets left in the car with the guy who does nothing with her other than talk after she sobers up and they discover they have more in common than they thought. She decides to leave her boyfriend that left her there and explore a new relationship.
He does not have sex with her while she is passed out drunk, people need to actually re-watch that scene instead of listening to reddit hyperbole.
w_domburg@reddit
Um? You should probably rewatch it.
"Did, um...
Did we, uh... yeah.
I'm pretty sure.
Um, excuse me, but do you...
Do you know if... Um, did I enjoy it?
Am I nuts? Of course I enjoyed it.
I mean, um... what I meant was, uh, did you?
Hmm.
You know, I have this weird feeling I did."
CaptainSneakers@reddit
The entire stereotype is really bad. Plus, the whole popular guy handing over the drunk popular girl like she's property, and the panty scene...the movie is not good for anyone.
Teal-Prowler505@reddit
Yeah, because the popular girl decided to ruin the popular guys house was so cute.
It's a story about karma. I'm sorry, but if someone decided to throw a party at my house like that, I don't think I'd care what happened to her either. His whole has was destroyed.
I'm sorry, but I can't find her to be a victim. She got what was coming to her.

LadyM80@reddit
Trading Places is one of my favorite movies, but oooof is it problematic!
Reasonable-Coconut15@reddit
I have to know what people find problematic about Trading Places these days.
For me, it's that I never understood what the hell they did at the end of the movie to make money. I've had so many people explain it to me and nothing sticks.
LadyM80@reddit
My VERY uninformed take on how they made money was, they faked a report that shares of frozen concentrated orange juice would go one way then leaked it to give the guys who placed the bet an advantage. But the market did something else. The brothers lost their shirts and Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd were somehow able to swoop in and make money.
Stuff that's problematic now, IMHO, is the racial stereotypes and how the rich people were so rotten to everyone else. The scene in the train especially sticks out - the "rabbit", Aykroyd in black face. In the end, the rich guys got what was coming to them though.
RedsVikingsFan@reddit
So the way they made money is relatively simple. (Long explanation follows 🤣) these numbers are made up, but relatively accurate to the movie. The exact numbers don’t matter, just the idea behind them.
The fake crop report they gave to the Dukes stated that the orange crop would be worse than usual, which would theoretically mean that there would be fewer oranges (and subsequently less frozen concentrated OJ) and these would then be more expensive than normal. This led the Dukes to believe that they should buy all of the OJ right away, no matter what the current price was, because if this report was true they could sell the OJ in the future for even more than they purchased it. The other buyers noticed this and started following the same strategy. With everyone buying, the price spiked higher (like $150).
Now in come Billy Ray and Louis. They know these prices are insane and wildly overpriced, so they start selling at a lower price ( $125) than what the market is offering (it’s technically called “short-selling” when you don’t actually own the item itself. You are selling now with the promise to buy it back by a certain date, or to provide the item to the buyer by a certain date). They are still selling at a price that is higher than what the real value will be (because of the buying frenzy), but since they are offering it at a lower price than the market, everyone starts buying it from them, making the price start going down.
The Dukes suspect something is up and then we get the scene cut to the actual announcement: “the orange crop was not overly-damaged by the winter, and should be relatively normal.”
Everyone hears this and realizes they paid too much for their OJ. There was no reason to pay any more than normal prices, and they’ve all made an expensive mistake. They need to sell, but no one wants to buy because they all know the prices are too high. Cue Louis and Billy Ray again. They’ve already (short) sold at a higher price and now they need to actually buy the OJ to fulfill the other part of their obligation. Since everyone knows the original buying was an overpriced mistake, and no one else is buying right now, these two are able to offer lower prices and people are glad to get any money back for their mistake (if you bought at $125, it’s better to get $50 back than to get nothing and end up with OJ that’s only worth $30)
At the end of the scene, Billy Ray and Louis have pretty much “closed” all of their positions (e.g. bought back enough OJ to match what they initially sold). Even if in the end they paid $50 for OJ that is only worth $30, that’s not where they made the money. They made the money by initially selling at $125 and then buying it back at $50. The Dukes seem to not have been able to sell any of what they bought, which leaves them with a ton of OJ that is worth very little. Places like the Exchange depicted here will have credit in place for people like the Dukes so that they can just trade without having to worry about where the actual dollars come from. But at the end of the day, they still need to have a way to cover what they “borrowed”. And since they thought the OJ in the future would be worth more than any price they would pay for it today, they blew past their actual net worth and owe hundreds of millions of dollars.
LadyM80@reddit
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to type all that out. Also, speaking of risky bets, sort of, I'm a Vikings fan, too
Reasonable-Coconut15@reddit
Hehe I love your take, and I should have prefaced it by saying I understand absolutely nothing about the stock market, futures, or any of it. I just knew they got rich by cheating the cheaters, and I left it at that. Hahah
And yeah, Dan Akroyd himself has said that, while he and Eddie came up with the Lionel Joseph bit together and he still thinks its funny for the movie, he wouldnt do it today, which I understand and respect.

There were some baaad movies in the 80s, definitely, but focusing on problematic -
#1 of course, 16 Candles. Then, Blue Lagoon (children in sexualized roles), Revenge of the Nerds, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and Trading Places.
You could maybe add Clueless to this list. Cher, in the movie, was 15 and her step brother, Josh, is in college, so, probably 19ish.
LoquaciousTheBorg@reddit
Clueless is an extremely 90s movie though.
LadyM80@reddit

It's a fun buddy comedy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor taking a cross country train on the run from the cops.
But there's an extended scene where to avoid a checkpoint, Pryor's character helps Gene disguise himself by using blackface makeup and going full 70s Jive. So awkward and the scene just keeps going and going...

One of my all time favorites, though how was it problematic? (Apart from being the reason I never tried any drug stronger than pot)
dadsgoingtoprison@reddit
I guess it’s problematic to me because it scared the shit out of me. I had friends who were into coke and spiraling out of control. It just hit really close to home.
ofthrees@reddit
ah, i get that, entirely. i was reading 'problematic' as things like 'have your way with my drunk girlfriend.'
it scared the shit out of me too. i was terrified to even try pot, much less anything harder, and it's a full credit to seeing that film at 14, when i was just becoming interested in being bad.
too bad smoking cigarettes was never pictured in such a negative light. :(
dadsgoingtoprison@reddit
I’m a pothead now! Lol it did scare me off anything harder though. I did coke once and one of the guys we were hanging out with did a line and his nose started gushing. Dude was 17 and had already eaten the inside of his nose up with coke. I didn’t even feel any effects of it but seeing him do that made me just say no to coke. Nancy Reagan should be proud of me.

16 Candles, Say Anything, breakfast Club, Ferris Beullers Day off, Big...basically most of the popular teen films of the era.
AuNaturellee@reddit
Stfu bc and fbdo are stone cold masterpieces and anyone calling them problematic are virtue signaling
Girl77879@reddit
Or... Not? Did I say I personally didn't like them? No. Are they problematic, yes. Typically good movies of whatever era are because they capture the time period. It means, in some ways, we have grown as people to recognize a movie can both be good and be problematic. And I'll add Dirty Dancing to that list. Have I watched it a million times, yes. Can I recognize it's absolutely problematic that 16 year old Baby has a relationship with very adult Johnny. Also, yes.
AuNaturellee@reddit
How do you define problematic? Please explain how Breakfast Club and Ferris Buellers Day Off provoke you to proselytize?
seahawk1977@reddit
Breakfast Club: Bender shoves his head between Claire's legs without her permission while under the desk. Most people would call that sexual assault. Anyone else that doesn't are the kinds of people that commit sexual assault.
Ferris Bueller: Ferris is a spoiled rich douchbag that only cares about himself, and gets rewarded for it without any consequences.
CountryMaleficent439@reddit
I have never understood why people liked the Ferris character or that movie. What a jerk. I would not call it problematic though. Some people are narcissistic jerks. That is just reality.
Perfect_Ad9311@reddit
Jerk how? By trying to coerce his buddy to relax and have a good time? He doesnt hurt or insult or take advantage of anyone, except his parents, maybe. Ferris is a righteous dude!
seahawk1977@reddit
Yeah "problematic" in the sense of all the other movies mentioned is probably the wrong term. I just can't think of a better one right now.
AuNaturellee@reddit
You don't like him and you don't agree with him so you condemn him...
seahawk1977@reddit
Yep
AuNaturellee@reddit
So any on-screen behavior that is illegal or outcome that is inequitable is what makes a movie problematic? Is that really what is meant by this?
CountryMaleficent439@reddit
I think what seahawk means is when the behavior is treated as normal and cool, it is problematic. Young boys see that shit and mirror it. Arguably in The Breakfast Club his behavior was not necessarily approved by the rest of the characters, but it was also treated pretty casually. I find 16 candles to be much, much, more problematic. Here take my drunk girlfriend for a ride and have a good time, wink, wink. Don't worry, she might be mad for one second but in the end, she will think it was a great time.
AuNaturellee@reddit
You considering that Bender taking the chance to be between Claire"s legs being treated "casually" by the others is what makes this "problematic" is a laughable response. What would you have them do? Do a citizen's arrest and report him to the principal who has them in detention?
Young people see the word problematic on Reddit and repeat it without being able to define it.
CountryMaleficent439@reddit
I don't know what goes on in school these days, but I imagine that the principal might very well be called in by the other students if such a thing happened today. At least I hope so. Back in the 80's sexual harassment was not taken very seriously. At least not at my school. I was harassed on a daily basis. So much so that started cutting classes where it was happening. I wish some of my fellow students would have helped me deal with them rather than act like it was funny. It was a problem. In that way the movie is a reflection of the reality of its time, and I can see how that scene could fit the "problematic" 80's films theme when viewed by someone raised in a time when boys are no longer allowed to openly do that. At least I hope they aren't. .
I don't think the OP intends to judge these movies by today's standards. But it is worth looking back at the past and seeing how culture changes.
I will agree with you that some people (I have no way to know their age) seem to be calling anything they don't like as problematic. Like scenes that deal with abortion. Movies like Taps and War Games are being suggested as being "problematic" which I just don't understand at all.
AuNaturellee@reddit
I'm genuinely sorry for you that you had to endure that treatment at your high school in the 1980s. I got into fistfights over being called "chink" and Long Duk Dong but I'm still not gonna go and call 16 Candles "problematic" over it.
It seems we are on the same page that simply seeing some depiction of a scene on screen with disagreeable content should not mean simply characterizing the whole film as "problematic"...especially if you can't even define it.
CountryMaleficent439@reddit
Yes, I think we are on the same page.
seahawk1977@reddit
No. That's not what I said at all.
AuNaturellee@reddit
I await a definition of "problematic"
seahawk1977@reddit
Honestly, at this point based on your other responses in this discussion, I don't think anything I could say will change your point of view. I just hope you don't ever have any daughters.
AuNaturellee@reddit
I sincerely wanted to know what you meant but it seems asking you to define some buzzword was too much for you. I hope you can do better in life ...

As far as your opinion on Ferris, lighten up. It’s an imperfect character in a lighthearted comedy. When someone with those qualities becomes President in reality. Now that’s problematic.

My husband is into the F This Movie podcast, which does a yearly film festival where all the listeners buy/stream the list of movies, everyone watches at the same time, and interacts via a massive group chat. The final movie of the night is usually a big crowd pleaser.

PoxyMusic@reddit
Genuinely curious , what’s wrong with Heathers? It’s been a long time…
Fast-Secretary-7406@reddit
Uh the whole climax is around a school bombing played as either justified revenge or comedy depending on your perspective
PoxyMusic@reddit
Ah yes, there’s that.
talidrow@reddit
The only thing I can think of offhand is the whole 'dead gay son' thing, using the notion of someone being gay as a huge shame/insult.
PoxyMusic@reddit
My take was that it would be an act of revenge to the jocks because they were cruel homophobes, and not meant to be a negative comment on gay people.
And at the end of it, the normies were forced to admit that being gay wasn’t the end of the world after all.
seamusfurr@reddit
I watched Heathers not too long ago, and didn’t find it particularly problematic.

I just recently watched the 1980 hugely acclaimed, "Romantic" drama, Urban Cowboy.... It's pretty bad. Right up there with Flashdance. Both were really popular was I was young, but just now watching them, holy crap... Glamorizing seriously abusive relationships as romantic was a thing I guess... But on the funny side, you can't go wrong with any George Hamilton, ie, Zoro the Gay Blade, or Love at First Bite. And of course the godfather, Mel Brooks' stunning masterpiece Blazing Saddles.

Almost all Brooke Shields movies put the "P" in Problematic: "Blue Lagoon", "Endless Love", "Pretty Baby", "Wanda Nevada" Though the last two are late 70s movies, not 80s, but close enough. Not her fault, though, as Brooke was a minor who was managed and exploited by her mother.
Outrageous-Pin-4664@reddit
Pretty Baby was problematic even then!!
Butterfly_Cat777@reddit
It's really astonishing that the movie got made, even in the 1970s.
Outrageous-Pin-4664@reddit
The only people really making a noise about it then were the Moral Majority types, and they were a minority.
Tinytiger1973@reddit

The Gods Must be Crazy
Stardustchaser@reddit
There’s a lot of satire to that, from the white characters to the militia group to the Attenborough-like narration. Problematic for sure but I think the makers were aware and leaned into it.
Gretzi11a@reddit
Heathers, but I’d start with the first bad news bears, bc it was a harbinger of far more “problematic”films to come in the 80s. Like Mommie Dearest—so problematic, it was an instant cult classic. Ooh! And eraserhead, a Boy and his Dog…so many to choose from!
To prep, I’d recommend a nf doc: Breakdown: 1975. those movies, contributed greatly to the evolution of problematic films in the 80s. Fun!!! Excellent theme. Please discuss John waters and Pedro almodovar. Dark Habits is awesome!
k1wyif@reddit
How is Eraserhead problematic?
Gretzi11a@reddit
Granted, that would defend on how “‘problematic” is defined. But main character in an existential crisis, a loveless marriage, and his accidental fatherhood of a yowling mutant spawn amid a decayed, post-industrial hellscape…seems problematic af for poor Henry. All made possible by Mel Brooks!
Outrageous-Pin-4664@reddit
I think "problematic" refers to material which was acceptable then, but is considered cringe now. Eraserhead was cringe then. It was bizarre and disturbing. I went to see it with my college roommate and his gf. For a week after, all I had to do to piss her off was start singing that song.

Sixteen Candles.
I love it, but damn…so many tropes.
Antique_Row7245@reddit
This!
AuNaturellee@reddit
How do you define trope and problematic?
Antique_Row7245@reddit
Trope as in reoccurring themes or symbolisms (e.g. sex-obsessed nerds with gadgets), problematic as in the portrayal of the tropes comes with normative salience that many would now reject (e.g. that posing an unconscious girl for sexually suggestive photographs is permissible, if not encouraged).
AuNaturellee@reddit
Movies that play on these tropes are farces, and so treating any content therein as "normatively salient" is conflating depiction with endorsement.
Antique_Row7245@reddit
Although many cases are satire on middle American sentiments (Long Duc Dong in Sixteen Candles for example), they strike me as endorsing the stereotype nonetheless. With the gender roles however, these strike me as being much closer to reinforcing the behavioural norms of the times than they do anything else. I mean this is Holywood in the 80s. At the same time, they are true to life for teenage experiences, hence the respect for Hughes by young audiences.
AuNaturellee@reddit
You sound like bros interpreting Gekko saying greed is good in Wall Street as sincere instead of satire and using it as their gospel. Saying it feels true is your reading and doesn't make the film or the filmmaker or the message "problematic".
Antique_Row7245@reddit
Well I am not sure how complete the satire always was at times.

As the party wound down, our host and friend was showing me and a coworker his massive vinyl and CD collection. We wound up watching Forbidden Zone. In the middle of us just silently taking in the bizarreness, our host and friend just piped up to the effect of: "The three of us watching this together is just weird!" There may have been his signature burst of laughter as well. Us coworkers agreed. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. How is this not mentioned. He makes his girlfriend think her grandma is dead, ruins the car of his “best friend” who clearly has an abusive dad who loves the car more than his son. His poor sister can see through the BS and yet AND YET. I’m so mad I loved that movie. He’s vacuous and terrible.

A_friend_called_Five@reddit
Sloane did NOT think her grandma was dead. She was in on the lie and was in on the plan to take the day off. You are either stretching to support your thesis, or you clearly missed some very obvious indications that were clear from the film.

But why problematic? It was dark and insightful about the standard ‘80s high school tropes rather than reinforcing them.
erilaz7@reddit
"Does this answer your question?" *holds up bottle of mineral water*
shatterly@reddit
But that was satire. It wasn’t the filmmaker saying “gay men drink mineral water” as a joke. JD was taking advantage of the stereotyping he knew would happen by planting that “evidence” of homosexuality.
JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
I think it's because you can't make comedic scenes about (perceived) suicide anymore.

Maybe I don't understand what problematic means.
I think it also depends on the age group of those watching. I'm a GenXer.
So far, it looks like an attack on many of the "Coming of Age" films of GenXers. ❤️
I loved many of the films mentioned here.
MidnightPotatoChip@reddit
Except Porkies, Sixteen Candles and Revenge of the Nerds. THOSE really are problematic
bayoujac@reddit
Based on what!? That's what my point is.
*Problematic because someone did drugs?
There are so many social "wrongs" that get a pass today that absolutely should not. And, yet, they want to say "xYZ" from 1980s is wrong!
Pick a side, bro!
SausageSmuggler21@reddit
It's like you're missing the point on purpose.
bayoujac@reddit
I was honestly looking for the point!
cooldudely@reddit
None of the things you list are problematic. But a white guy in blackface is problematic. Running jokes built on racial stereotyping is problematic. Raping a woman who is passed out drunk, and acting like it’s awesome the nerd finally got sex, is problematic. Raping a woman while disguised as her boyfriend, and acting like it’s awesome the nerd finally got sex, is problematic. See the difference?
bayoujac@reddit
How is drunk driving ok?
Drugging?
Smoking?
They're all wrong! They can potentially hurt/k**l someone
And, while we're at it, talking about Revenge Of The Nerds - bullying is really bad!! Like, causes all sorts of trauma. The kind that causes PTSD and other mental problems!
Those of us who survived it - it left scars!! It is problematic! Yet most people point just to that ONE scene as being "problematic"
houseofmatt@reddit
Rapey problematic for starters.
bayoujac@reddit
Rape has always been wrong.
Racism has always been wrong.
The fact that it's only now being considered socially wrong is what is problematic 😐
CinnamonDish@reddit (OP)
Problematic means back then we watched the movies and laughed and thought the characters were quirky or delightful. We watched today and while maybe we still laugh a bit, we also are thinking “oh my God that’s totally fucked up.”
Soul Man for example (as suggested here) is problematic. Loved that movie as a kid not sure how great I feel about a guy in black face for a law degree now. Even fictional.

TickingTheMoments@reddit
I don’t think it is. There’s some bullying. Some things that some people could consider homophobic. Some people would think it’s glorifies violence.

suspicious_bag_1000@reddit
Ohh so virtue signaling?
cleveland_leftovers@reddit
No, like 80’s movies where teenage boys try to trick or deceive girls into sleeping with them. (Gross).
Where a teen boy holding up a minor’s underwear for other boys to gawk at is seen as a triumph.
When the women in the movie are about as dumb as puppies and the big, strong men treat them as such but also ‘save’ them. (Cuz women always be needing saving, amiright?)
That kind of stuff. Outdated and icky themes that didn’t cause public outrage back then…but would most definitely be pointed out now.

“Where a teen boy holding up a minor’s underwear for other boys to gawk at…” I’m assuming you’re talking about Sixteen Candles. You do realize that the character is holding up an older student’s underwear. The way you phrased it makes it sound like a high school kid was holding up a younger kid’s underwear.
What’s actually problematic about that film is the Geek and Jake casually talking about date-raping Jake’s drunk, blacked out girlfriend. Strange times, right?
Kwyjibo68@reddit
Don't disagree, though I think part of what made it acceptable at the time was that she came to riding around in the car (seem she's conscious), seemed happy and upbeat (see, there's no force here) and started putting moves on the kid (again, see it's her choice) -- though she thought he was Jake. Still all wrong of course.
The parentheticals are what the movie is communicating, not me. Just to clarify.

I really hate this whole “problematic” shit. Get the fuck over it. The whole idea that a movie or tv show is “problematic” smacks of censorship. We (most of us at least) came out ok. I still watch this at least once a year. I agree that it was problematic with all the outright sexual innuendo, and I think a lot of our Moms who thought it was just some cute summer camp movie would have been horrified to know what they were driving many of their pre-teens to see!
The juxtaposition that always strikes me is scenes where Larry is telling Spaz “She WANTS it!” vs innocent scenes like the overnight where he’s congratulating Spaz for holding Jackie’s hand in the woods:
I held her hand when we walked home.
Spaz, you're on your way!
That's great!

Bret Easton Ellis is hard to adapt. Less Than Zero is probably the least best adaptation because it leaves out too much of the spirit of the novel.

Is Heathers really problematic? It's dark but it never "punches down." Homophobia is shown but the perpetrators are being mocked.
Legbender@reddit
I think it's the double school shooting done by the main character, that is then played for laughs 5 minutes later. I am cool with it, but my son was like WTF Dad?
vectorology@reddit
Yeah, Columbine wasn’t unforeseeable. Honestly joking about school shootings and bombs was very 80s accurate. We did it all the time.
Awkward-Initiative28@reddit
Seems like in 1989 firing off a real gun with blanks in a cafeteria would at least get you suspended. But I'm an older millennial that went to high school in the late '90s so who knows.
vectorology@reddit
For sure. But the jokes about doing it were real in a way that would’ve been too much after columbine. At least once a year someone would call in a bomb threat so we’d all have to evacuate for a couple of hours. We’d just be happy to be out of class. No one took it seriously, not even the school staff tbh.
666ForMySorrow@reddit
I don't see it as a Columbine style school shooting. They are targeted for being bullies and the protagonist is tricked into participating. Veronica is the moral compass who tries to prevent more deaths. J.D. is ultimately shown as a bad guy.

Phenomenal movie, but students barricading themselves in a military academy and being besieged by the US army just feels different after Columbine and so much else.
BabadookOfEarl@reddit
I almost feel like that one is more relevant now. Established authority has lost its mind and every move everyone makes seems extreme. I may have to find it again.
nrith@reddit
I just don’t think the general public has a taste for that kind of military/school violence. I do love that movie, though.
CharlieBravo74@reddit
Ooof. So many. To big ones that stand out in my mind :
Sixteen Candles: the Long Duck Dong character, everything about him
Breakfast Club: the gender politic of that movie are as retrograde as they come. Aly Sheedy's character changes a ton of things about herself and suddenly the popular jock notices her. Judd Nelson looka 30, ends up with Molly Ringwald, of was the same age as her character. Pretty gross looking.
Pretty In Pink: we all know how that movie ended

"Problematic" carries a political connotation, i.e. violative of political correctness, etc. You know, the triggering bullshit that the lesser generations cry about. "Disturbing" makes sense, i.e. Hellraiser, Kids, etc. But to flag movies depicting life as it actually was in the 80s and to attempt to cancel or ridicule them by tagging them as problematic is not a very GenX thing to do. One can recognize that times have changed and still enjoy and admire iconic 80s films.
Plus, OP's friends are millennials, why is this in this sub? They wouldn't really get our stuff anyway.
drahma23@reddit
I'm old and I loved movies like 16 Candles and Revenge of the Nerds when I was a young teenager. But watching them now I recognize that some of that shit just wasn't right. I don't think the movies should be banned or "cancelled" (not sure how you cancel a movie) - to me it's worth watching them to see how times and sensibilities have changed.
NoMoreMustaches@reddit
I think you were triggered by the OP. “Disturbing” is a completely different thing. They just want movies to laugh about how the movies that they’re watching from the 80’s would no longer fly today.

Hot Dog… The Movie (1984)
Come for the hot tub nudity, stay for the ski ballet finale.
Hoping to prove his skill at freestyle skiing, Idaho farm boy Harkin (Patrick Houser) heads to a competition at California's Squaw Valley ski resort, offering a ride to hitchhiking musician Sunny (Tracy N. Smith) on the way. Harkin's main rival in the contest is Rudi (John Patrick Reger), an arrogant Austrian. With guidance from former professional skier Dan (David Naughton), Harkin sets out to win the prize while being pursued by the gorgeous Sylvia (Shannon Tweed), making Sunny jealous.

There is no possibility of topping Soul Man in the problematic category. The protagonist gets to law school by wearing brown dye on his skin, and putting jeri curl in his hair.n
boybrian@reddit
That's the one I was thinking of. Someone mentioned Silver Streak which I think had Gene Wilder in blackface?
Research_Liborian@reddit
Yes, I remember that one too!
But the entire movie is C. Thomas Howell portraying, and somehow convincing black people, that he is one of them. Simply because every morning he puts on iodine and Jeri curl.
The movie's completely accepted premise was that black people couldn't get into an elite law school other than under affirmative action.
It was profitable, and got some favorable reviews.
Kwyjibo68@reddit
IIRC, the main reason he did it was because he needed a scholarship (his rich dad decided to cut him off) and he found a full scholarship for black students. Nothing really about affirmative action. Not that the movie isn't problematic anyway.
Research_Liborian@reddit

🎵 Teenage suicide 🎵 don't do it! 🎵
Awkward-Initiative28@reddit
Christian Slater pulls out a real gun in the school cafeteria and shoots someone. Later it's revealed he had blanks in the gun and it was meant for "laughs" but I was like ummm pretty sure not only would he be expelled today, he would also go to juvie for a few years for doing that. In Heathers it's just hand waved and the movie moves on.
Fun_Interaction_9619@reddit
Yes, and the treatment of suicide would not fly today.

But Heathers was made to be problematic - it wasn’t trying to be a ‘boys will be boys’ (or ‘girls will be girls’) - it was made as a commentary on how fucked up society is/was. Being problematic was the story. Basically, the message is ‘yall suck, do better!’

Risky Business - teen sets up brothel in family home while parents are away and is rewarded with place at elite business school.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - conman pretends to have mental disability.
Pretty Woman (1990, I know) - prostitution is fun!
PenguinEmpireStrikes@reddit
Big is a good one!
I watched Dirty Rotten Scoundrels recently and didn't find it problematic. We know he's not disabled, and the joke is on the targets and Martin's character. And it's hilarious.
It's been a while since I've seen Risky Business, but my recollection is that it was an intentionally dark take on a kind of guy and world, maybe closer to Wall Street. But it's been a long time. I mostly remember how uncomfortable the movie was.
Awkward-Initiative28@reddit
Risky Business holds up if you view it as a satire of Reaganomics from a teen boy's perspective. Similar to how Election (1999) is a satire of American politics from the POV of high school kids.

Animal House, long one of my favorite movies, has a scene where a high school age supermarket checkout girl gets into a college party because one of the nerds in Delta house invites her.
She gets really drunk, and there's an extended scene where he ponders whether to have sex with her when she's unconscious. That is, a literal cartoon John Belushi pops up on his shoulder and urges him, "Go ahead, fuck her."
I'm supposing that scene really wouldn't make it out of the first treatment these days.

Since I don’t see it mentioned, how about The Last American Virgin? The raunchy subject matter probably wouldn’t fly today, but Gary was…as the kids say today…a low-key creep. Letting the air out of her mopeds tires to trick her into accepting a ride with him to school was a creep move.

I got 3 suggestions, in order of "What the fuck?"
9 1/2 weeks (1986). This movie aged like milk and is basically antiethical to any modern audience.
Wild Orchid. You think 9 1/2 weeks is rough? OK, this is way worse.
Real Genius. Wonderful film but has not aged well at all.

80's problematic? You mean the types of movies that would never be made today?
Soul Man would be at the top of my list.
Traditional-Fix2173@reddit
If you don't mind material from people who knew _exactly_ what they were doing, and were pushing cringe factors deliberately - maybe hold off on these ones a little until your group have been somewhat inured by the lesser excesses of the 80s (John Hughes, for instance - and _then_ dive into stuff from TROMA Studios, or John Waters. "Tromeo & Juliet", "The Toxic Avenger", "Sgt Kabukiman, NYPD", for instance, or, from Waters the original "Hairspray", "Crybaby" (1990, but give it a pass if you can handle Iggy Pop in an outdoor bathtub) and "Polyester". He's otherwise best known for "Pink Flamingos", which, well, it almost defines problematic but was made in 1972. So you could skip that one.
I'd even go so far as to say that these suggestions are all the more gleefully "wrong" _because_ they're deliberately so. The flip side of that being of course that nearly everything else that's been suggested (so far at least) is all the more egregiously painful and problematic for having been made in earnest, with the genuine belief that what was happening was perfectly okay by societal standards of the time. or at the very least that it just didn't matter, cause it was just a movie.
Affectionate_Yak8519@reddit
Oh man I love Polyester, I just made my husband watch it for the first time the other day
DarkScorpion48@reddit
Good answer. There is a huge difference between something from the 80s that was explicitly created for shock value and something that was considered normal for it’s time.
