I’d suggest bird watching as a hobby. Its super calming and kind of a fun thing aswell. You discover new things related to birds everyday. I also randomly got into watching bird and feeder short clips lately on coolfly, it’s oddly relaxing to scroll through. Didn’t expect bird drama and cute moments to become my activity but here we are.

Cooking! Never really been much of a cook but my wife is really good at it. I enjoy taking a recipe and making it over and over again (on a monthly basis!), tweaking ingredients, getting technique advice from my wife, and using different pots, until I've perfected the dish. All of the recipes I work from now have copious margin notes. We lived with my inlaws for six months two years ago and I got to try cooking with cast iron. I was blown away how different some dishes come out when cooked in cast iron vs standard stainless steel cookware. At this point I have a mix of different types of cookware I use specifically chosen for each recipe I make. This year my challenge is to go through my wife's collection of old Fine Cooking magazines from the 2000s. It's fun to flip through the old issues and find a new recipe that I know is vetted and not just there to get views.

Find a competent brass repairman. You can get names from a symphony tuba player (Google is your friend). Call or take it to the repair person, who should be able to help you both with price, and with ideas of how and where to sell it. Of course, we're not trying to push your dad!!!

Good idea. The tuba is over 100 years old (I think k it was made in 1925) and is damn near perfect condition. Dad said a guy told him it was worth about $30k in the 90's so I could be more now. My dad and mom play in a local community band. They have for at least the last 40 years. I played baritone in the school band and in the community band in high school but never had any real talent or love for playing music. I much prefer spending time in my wood shop.

My dad actually sold his violin before he died, to save the family from dealing with it after he passed. I actually did not agree with this, because it meant my dad didn't have his instrument for the last few years of his life.

I haven't outgrown gaming but it definitely doesn't hit like it used to. The last game that really really drew me in to the point of anticipating playtime was Expedition 33. Wasn't expecting much when I downloaded it off of Gamepass but it grabbed me hard! I knew nothing about it going in. I know this is the same story for many who played it but for me at 47 and not really drawn into gaming like I used to be, this game was an absolute breath of fresh air. I just feel like so many new games are just re skins of games I've been playing for the last 20 years. So many times, I'm not playing because I'm invested, but rather just going through the motions of finishing something I started. Have a hard time realizing if it's an age thing, depression, or boredom? But I'm leaning towards age and boredom. Nothing in gaming today feels "new" to me.

My gaming has moved to things like Minecraft and Stardew Valley with the kids. Not going to lie, they don't hook me like Skyrim, etc, and they're not games I'd usually gravitate to (well, I have played Stardew on my own so maybe not quite true lol but it's not a game I would have picked for myself), but it's still a lot of fun. Bonus of bonding time with my kids :) The last few big titles I tried were not that great imo, and I think it's because too many games hold your hand now. There's no figuring out anything, they just tell you what you're supposed to do, or have an arrow or lit up path, etc. Maybe I've just tried the wrong games, but it gets pretty boring when you don't have to figure anything out or it's just a repeat of the game before but in a different setting.

I can relate to this. For me, I’ve found I just needed to pivot to different types of games. These days I’m much more drawn to story and character-driven action or RPG games, and I usually play them on the easiest difficulty because I don’t have the time or patience to repeat difficult sections over and over. Cyberpunk 2077 has really drawn me in, and it runs well in my handheld ROG Ally X so it’s easy to make progress when I’ve got a spare hour before bed. I’ve played through all the endings and I’m working on the Phantom Liberty expansion now.

I collect, restore, repair, buy, sell, and trade antique farm machinery. Tractors, implements, wagons, whatever, I take old iron that's forgotten and junk and make it run and operate again. Sometimes I paint, sometimes I just leave it like I found it and get it running the best I possibly can. I recently picked up a South Bend lathe and a Bridgeport vertical mill, and now I am teaching myself how to make certain hard to find parts for more obscure machines.

I have farming in my blood & our farm still has pretty much every mechanized piece of equipment the farm used in the past out in the boneyard. The thought of restoring them is tempting, but they would take up a lot more room on top of the cars and motorcycles. I’ve gotten into making things via 3d printer and CNC router, and have been looking to get a mini combo mill/drill/lathe to do manual machining on. More or less. I bought a bunch of older books on lathe and mill use, and they've become my evening reading materials, I also watch some YouTube channels specific to machining (Topper Machine is my favorite). Mostly I've just been buying scrap stock and attempting to make simple parts to get the feel of how everything works. I recently made a venturi tube for a Caterpillar R5 carburetor that actually worked. Not the most complex part, but the dimensions are critical to getting proper air/fuel flow. Can't lie, I am still pretty proud of that. I haven't messed with the mill much yet, but I have a small steam engine I picked up a couple years ago that needs a valve gear overhaul and that's going to take a ton of mill work.

I work in vinyl, and I had two really cool projects come across my desk in the last six months. First was a father and son that were refurbishing two vintage Gilmore Blu Green Gasoline pumps. They brought the freshly painted pump doors into the shop and we had to do the rest, like recreating the logo and the original accent designs. Went from blank tan doors to looking like they were brand new. So much fun to work on. The second was a retired farmer who was restoring an old Ford FW-30 tractor. I ended up making the two shades of blue striping that go across the sides. I didn't get to do the install on that one, he wanted to do all the actual restoration by himself, but I really wish I could have. I'm usually stuck doing fleet vehicles, or police cars, and a lot of dump trucks, so having projects like that show up every once in a while is kind of a nice palate cleanser.

It's cool some was actually restoring an old FW, not one you often see as a restoration candidate. Working in vinyl for farm equipment decals can be a steady business. A guy and his wife who recently retired made their living for the last 25 years making factory correct decals for the F series Farmalls, just the F series and nothing else. Finding suppliers for more obscure makes and models can be tricky. I'm a Minneapolis Moline fan and have several of them and getting right, correct, and proper decals for some of them is a real hassle.

For sure. The restoration market wasn't something we really tapped into until those two jobs. I had to do a few of the actual FW-30 text decals for the tractor, and the old man had actually measured every letter, every curve and line, and gave the measurements to us to remake them exactly. He was very particular about them being exact. I imagine that's how a lot of the restoration market is, being as exact as humanly possible.

It's a 12x34, sometimes called a Heavy 12. I'm still very new to using it and the Bridgeport, but I'm getting there. There is so much to learn when it comes to lathe and mill operation, and so many of the old school machine shops are going away these days, it's important to learn how to use tools like these now before all that old practical experience is gone.

Same age here. Some old ones that didnt really pan out, but kept me busy and were kinda satisfying: I got really into knife sharpening when I worked in restaurants. It was fun learning about different kinds of steel and different techniques. Im not great at it anymore, but Im ok at it. Its fairly cheap, and if you learn how to keep knives sharp, it saves you money and aggravation in the long run. Making stuff out of pallets. Lol. Nevermind. I got as far as breaking down pallets and sanding the wood up real pretty. It was fun for a while. Roasting coffee in a cast iron pan. I still do this as a side gig in my farming/delivery business. It's fun, and theres a litmitless amount to learn about coffee. I dont make much money, but it pays for my habit. No one takes cast iron seriously, and certain beans dont work at all, but some do pretty well. It takes a lot of research and practice to get good at, but its not hard to get ok at it. Reading genre fiction. Right now Im knee deep in 50s scifi, but detective stuff is fun too. I use the libby ap that lets me check out stuff from the library.

42m and I used to do metal models. Took time but I'd work on them a few hours a night. I made some cool ones like a Gundam and a millennium falcon. An 80 dollar magnifying light that mounts to a desk and some small tools and I was good to go. No glue or painting either. I was making the flying dutch man before my accident. Now I can barely use my left arm or walk but the modules feel so amazing to look at and the kids are doing the last one now. There older now. 2 are 18 and one at 15 and 11

I don't know what boredom is, as I just stay busy on several hobbies and I generally deep dive in them for a few years at a time and rotate them from soft to strong interests over the years. I rotate audio, photography, woodworking, astronomy (particularly solar astronomy during the daytime) and briar pipe smoking. They often overlap for me. I got my first telescope in the mid-80's (like an old Sears refractor, a dinky 60mm or so). It never gets old for me to look at solar system bodies, as I don't have to stay up late for it and can view planets, moon, and the sun in great detail during the day and towards evening so I'm not staying up all night. I particularly enjoy daily viewing the sun in hydrogen alpha, it just never gets old, its different every day. I got into audio in the 90's, took forever to save up enough for a pair of good headphones (Sennheiser HD580's) around 1996 or so. I was hooked on hifi since then. These days I design and build my own speakers. I have taken it to extreme levels and have a dedicated room in my house that from the walls in was built for audio and have a dedicated theater and listening room that is heavily acoustically treated and I enjoy designing and building new speakers fairly often. I like measuring things and learning new stuff and putting it into practice. So naturally I love to listen to music and actively buy new CD's all the time (I don't stream, I do physical media) and these days buying Blurays to watch shows/movies (I'd rather buy discs to watch a show instead of streaming it, so I'm patient and wait for it to be released as physical media). Woodworking was something I didn't get serious with until I started wanting to build my own speakers and use nicer materials like hardwoods. This then later got me into building cabinets, tables, desks, and then full on room builds with false walls. I really enjoy doing fancy baffles in hardwoods for speakers. I've been collecting and smoking loose leaf tobacco since after about 2010 or so and really enjoy it. I stay sober and just enjoy a good pipe now and then. Especially while doing my other hobbies. I balance these things with my free time and my family. I love being at home. Everything I like and like to do is at home.

I was looking up studies on chronic lower back pain and to my surprise the thing that seems to actually work the best is Tai Chi and ibuprofen. I did this because a meta analysis of a bunch of studies on chronic lower back pain came out and literally nothing actually works long term. Not gabapentin, not injections or epidurals of steroids, not physical therapy, not a chiropractor. Nada I should really start Tai Chi, my back fucking hurts

You can do as much or as little as you like. I've been doing it since the first of the year. When I started it was with a 10 minute video once a day. Now I'm doing that 10 minutes in the morning and before bed, and 20 min in the afternoon. That's just what works best for me. My body wants to lock up if I don't move around enough.

I just looked up beginners Tai Chi and Qi Gong on YouTube. It's slow and it will feel like you aren't really exercising but stick with it. My balance, mood, flexibility and pain levels have improved a lot in the couple of months I've been doing it. There are many videos on YouTube, you'll just have to try some to see who's style you like. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have been!

Browse BGG, but look at lists that are good as intro to gaming and ones for solo play. There is so much out there. We’re in a renaissance of tabletop playing (though the tariffs don’t help).

I use an 8" nakiri for all purpose prep and it's good but kind of a lot. So I can't decide if it's a good idea or stupid idea to have a petty sized nakiri, you know? Sidebar: the sweetest knife we've got is a santoku I made for my son, but it's got a hybrid chef's belly profile. Great weight and balance but a perfect slicer.

I’m a passionate home cook and I make my knives using a function first principle. I’d never sell one I wouldn’t want to use myself. They’re lively and thin with a lot of distal taper. My stainless knives are especially nice to own, low maintenance and keep a great edge. I work in AEB-L and NitroV steels.

Yes, this. It takes a while to get into - I killed a ridiculous number of plants before I figured out what I could grow well. But the things I can grow, I grow *well* and have so much to give away. Because of that, I also started canning so I could preserve a little of it, and I have some really yummy and unique condiments and relishes sitting on my shelf.

Similar here. I've been building model rockets. I built my first rocket in like 30 years last year and now I have like 15 of them in my shop. It's fun to take them time to get them looking nice and then I take them to the park with the kids and we launch them... and try not to get them stuck in a tree. I'm looking at going for my Level 1 high power rocket certification later this year. But until then, I'm just having fun making and launching smaller (and cheaper) rockets.

Very cool. My 8 year old and I started about a year ago with rubber band powered free flight models and worked up to building a couple of 24” wingspan models that we flew a bunch over the summer and fall. We’re doing similar to you and starting small and working up to bigger stuff. The model were finishing up to fly this spring is a discus launch RC glider. Maybe we’ll move up to an electric motor plane this summer.

You can still buy that glue (it’s called dope) and that shit will get you high as balls if you get the old school nitrate dope. Now we just use Elmer’s glue stick and it honestly works every bit as well. For the coverings on the wings we use acrylic spray to seal them where they used to use thinned out dope.

Make sure you are also getting checked out by your Dr. there are types of heart issues that are almost entirely genetic and you could be a fit marathoner in your 20s and drop just likes 60 year old with no level of movement. It is great to work on getting fit, just make sure you are covering things from multiple angles. Source: the dr who did a 4x bypass on my dad last year when he came in complaining of chest tightness. The dr explained that this type of plaque buildup seemed to be entirely unrelated to diet or exercise. (My grandfather ironically had a similar surgery 13 years ago)

Gaming and pc building. Over the past year and a half my wife and i have built gaming pcs, bought portable gaming pcs (lenovo legion go with steam os), and have started modding older gaming systems like our 3DSs and PSPs. We also regularly have gaming sessions as a couple or with friends, and have gotten back into retro gaming as well. Ita just a shame pc parts are getting so disgustingly expensive. Gaming and modding and pc building are a lot of fun and it shouldnt be as cost prohibitive as its become over the last year because of all this AI bullshit.

Have you considered watch building/repair? I’m in the early stages and gauging just how deep down the rabbit hole I’ll be going. I’ve always been someone to pick up a hobby, get reasonably proficient, then slowly tail off… building and servicing watches has held my interest and I’ve ended up with some cool stuff I can wear as a reminder daily. It’s also quite meditative if you’re finding yourself too tuned into your phone/electronics. I like to pour myself a glass of whiskey and build a watch on a free night!

47/F Ride (have 2 street legal, 1 track only bikes), and when I can afford it, track and race motorcycles. Do all my own maintenance/work (up to and including rebuilding transmissions, so a fair bit). Training my dog in IGP/Schutzhund. \^\^\^these two happen pretty much no matter what, the dog is a every single day multiple times a day plus attending our training club multiple times a week thing. Riding is a bit more weather dependent. Hiking; weight lifting; training/riding/working with horses, reading. \^\^\^these happen very regularly, but occasionally fall off the schedule if life is getting in the way Video games; content creation; art \^\^\^When I have time, but are the first things to get dropped when things get remotely busy. There are other things that interest me, but there is only so much time in a week LOL.

If you enjoy gaming in general, I find that the Steam Deck is a heavy hitter when it comes to playing a lot of modern games, but also has amazing emulation capabilities. Being able to play old NES, SNES, PlayStation, Xbox, arcade, and other console games on the same device that I play things like ARC Raiders or modern Monster Hunter games is incredibly satisfying.

Crossstitch for me. Up front cost can look daunting, but if you divide the hours working on a project by the cost of the project, it is less than $1 an hour. The nice thing is how portable they are. Got another baseball practice to sit through? Bring your stitching instead of doom scrolling. Headed to the park? Bring it along. Road trips? Why not? Waiting at yet another doctor’s appointment? Additionally, it’s come quite far since the 80s. There are designs for every taste. Find a local needle shop or 123Stitch.com (my favorite and most reliable website to shop from) to find something that suits your taste. Note: beware the pattern mills and AI slip found on Etsy. There are some reliable vendors there, but check the crossstitch Reddit for a list of reputable ones.

The main thing I do is bike riding - mountain biking primarily. Some road biking. It's pretty time consuming and expensive though. I usually leave the house by 6am in the summer on weekends and ride a few hours so I'm home before the family is really up and running and I can then go to lunch or do stuff all afternoon with them. I road bike for an hour-ish at a time before/after work depending on the time of year. If you wanted to do some bike riding stuff and had very little time, you could get a smart trainer and use a service like zwift. Those are fun and I can knock out a good workout in an hour without ever leaving my house. I also play some video games if I have time. Outside of that I don't have a lot of time - always some work to do on the property. Something to do with my family - hanging out, errands, or whatever. I'm rarely bored.

I've always enjoyed drawing but just recently started looking up **online drawing lessons/activities** for the first time, and holy shit I've been sleeping on some amazing free resources! For those who aren't aware: just about anyone can learn how to draw welll! My husband, mother-in-law, and both my parents have taught drawing and they've all said the same thing. So have some of my friends who are amazing artists. It's also a great hobby to participate in with the kids if they're into that (most are, even if they don't know it yet). **Drumming** is another of my hobbies. I do have a drum set, but you don't need one. All you need is a pair of sticks and something to practice on, like a "practice pad" (not expensive) or even just a book (you can put something like a fabric pot holder on top to muffle the noise). And another activity kiddos tend to enjoy. I found out my library card gives me access to free Coursera courses (the lowest cost plan with them is normally $50/month if I'm remembering correctly), and I'm currently **taking an introductory-level Spanish class** through the University of California Davis campus. (**The library card also gives me access to a bunch of other free stuff:** digital books and audiobooks, childrens books, magazines, Ancestry Library Edition, various career resources that are normally paid, music, business planning resources, legal resources, etc.) One more to mention: **backgammon**. I like to play online through a game I found on Steam. You get to play with actual people and it's great for you - improves memory, calculation speed, and long-term planning ability. I started playing as a kid and had so much fun playing with my parents! After I quit spending so much time on my phone (getting rid of Facebook and Instagram was most helpful with that, not surprisingly) I found I had a lot more time than I thought. Around the time I stopped losing myself in social media and the news, I also made a point of investing some time into being more organized (with daily grind type things such as meal planning, as well as getting rid of a bunch of stuff and better organizing the remaining stuff lol). That involved quite a bit of time, actually, but the payoff was so worth it.

Fly fishing is my big one. I used to take trips to cool places but now with responsibilities I stay close to home with day or half day trips. Sometimes take one of the kids with. This hobby has stuck with me since 2006. There is some cost to get into it with some equipment but there is a lot of nice equipment out there for not too much. I’ve also gotten into Pokemon card collecting with my son. And slowly slowly collecting silver and gold bullion and coins as a wealth storage and hedge against inflation. Sounds serious, but it’s fun finding cool pieces and adding to the collection, all while knowing that if the economy/dollar crashes, I’ll have a little nest egg of value.

Do you have a yard? Fruit trees! Join a fruit explorers group (get your mind out the gutter!). Like any hobby I seem to be interested in, once it gets serious it’s infiltrated by men ;-), but there’s a mix. I’ve been to grafting workshops where people gift pieces of their trees so you can make Frankenstein trees, etc. You get the added bonus of picking the fruit off with the kids, potentially teaching them something, donating food & cheap food! You can get really into it or plop cheap peach trees in the ground & get a bunch of peaches several years later (peaches are native to China & grow in cold locations). You could have columnar apples as a fence! Make a fruit salad tree! Grow paw paw! I grow peaches ($20 ea from Whole Foods years ago) and sweet cherries (from raintree nursery) in Chicagoland. I got to try out Adderall for the first time today (doc thinks it might be undiagnosed ADHD)... do not recommend. Dry mouth is a bitch. Got any decent mountains nearby? You could try out trail-running (or just start with some nice hikes and enjoy nature). If you're in the western US, it's basically early summer already. I'm in Idaho, and my lawn's greening up, tulips are well up and look like opening within a week or so. Pretty sure the local trails have dried out *almost* enough for the mountain bikers to start hitting them again. Got space for a garden? Or some 5-gallon buckets you can put on the balcony? I'd say you could take a crack at getting into Scotch, but that's not cheap. I'm just interested enough to get myself in trouble, but the entry-level stuff is mostly in the $40-80 range.

I use loseit. I had purchased a lifetime membership years ago when I started with getting serious and wanting to drop weight. Now I just ignore the weight loss focus. It's easy and quick to use. Has a massive food library. Has a scanner function and a recipe function. The TDEE calculator for maintenance is accurate for me so if I'm going up or down just add calories as you go. Still tracks macros and nutrients. And I use the Strong app to track lifting progress. I don't have a paid version of that because the free version works well enough.

Yeah bro this has basically defined my life in the last year. It started with wanting to go back to more “analog” and less “matrix living” if you know what I mean 😉. Started with diamond art and embroidery and night for something to do with my hands. Then I added in paint by numbers but with acrylic paint makers because I can’t stand all those little paint cups. Recently I got bold and added an adult pickleball beginners class at our rec center. Biggest out of my comfort zone yet. But I love it! Honestly check the rolling subreddit. I'm sure I'm not doing everything 100% efficiently. I'm just rowing for the cardio so as long as I can bang out 600 to 700 calories per session I'm fine. What I can recommend is getting a concept 2 rower. Even used they hold up forever. And you will be sore when you start. Just go easy and work through it. After a few weeks you won't even notice it. But be careful. Once you hit your 500 split time. You keep wanting to lower it more and more. When I started I could barely do a 220, now 2 minutes is basically easy mode.

I just ordered fancy Chinese walnuts as a fidget. Wenwan is a Chinese practice of collecting and handling of small things, like walnuts, and polishing them over time with handling them and brushing. They develop an amazing patina and jadelike appearance, , and the older and more handled they are, the more cherished and valuable. This is another thing, if you have a Bricks and Minifigs near you and they have a bulk bin, you can get a lot of parts for cheap. I built modular base plates for some of my sets to sit on, it's easy to do and easy to add flowers or whatever is needed to match the piece you're displaying. It's less fun if you don't like manually sorting hundreds of pieces at a time. :D

I have a Bricks & Minifigs in my city! It is the coolest store :) I love all the bulk bins, base plates, sets on display, finding displays, etc. I built as a kid. My son likes to pick out sets to "help" me build (he's an adult w/ disabilities), and my daughter's boyfriend is such a fan that I got him a store gift card for Christmas. Highly recommend this store if folks have one near them. I've never taken in sets or pieces to sell to them, but I like having the option and that they resell complete sets. Nice suggestion!

My main hobby has been disc golf for a long time. I still play, but it has been more sporadic. I hope to get back into playing competitively again soon. There is a "masters" division for 40+ players, and myself and a lot of my disc golf friends/acquaintances are now eligible or will be soon. So that is pretty cool. I've been trying to get into more "crafty" type stuff which is always a struggle for me to make myself actually set up and do, but I have been more. I still play video games quite a bit, but not nearly as much as I did even 5 years ago. I doubt I will ever quit gaming completely. I really need to get back into reading for fun. I can't afford a mechanic so I am now a hobby mechanic using YouTube and factory manuals. My stay at home wife got a full time job so now I am Mr. Mom on many days a week. And I am in the middle of building a MagicMirror display for the kitchen. I have no idea what I'm doing so I am actually having ChatGPT and Gemini program it for me, which is absolutely terrible but I'm muddling though and getting an education (mostly by watching what it does wrong) in the process. I also just learned how to make the super old cheap as hell laptop I never use boot to Linux with a stick. It's so bare bones I might make that a permanent switch for it. I have taken up pipe smoking. I know there are healthier choices. But I enforce a strict “no electronics” rule while I’m sitting on my porch enjoying the pipe, and so tha has led to increased reading time, and even an increase in time just sitting at rest. Which sounds counter-intuitive for a hobby, but it has done wonders for my spirit. I’ve also declared this to be my “Year of Making”, wherein I am trying to learn a bit about welding, woodwork, blacksmithing, wood turning, and whatever else I fancy. I realize this post makes me sound incredibly old. I’m almost 45. I’m embracing it. 🙂

I just got into fountain pens, which in turn is getting me back into writing. A Pilot Kakuno is less than $15, a refillable converter is about $5, and a bottle of ink runs anywhere from $10 to $30. It’s a lot of fun going down the rabbit hole researching pens, inks, nibs, etc. Now my handwriting looks awesome, plus writing is fun again! I have a monthly supper club with some friends where we try a new restaurant each month - usually different types of ethnic food. In addition to that, board games, puzzles, and trying to read/listen to a couple of books each month. I also love catching classical music concerts when I can -- community orchestras aren't too expensive, the music uplifts my spirit, and it's a great thing to support.

I’m super interested in missing persons who aren’t found for years or decades. My theory is that the cases which don’t get solved relatively quickly are more likely to contain elements that defy Occam’s Razor. Since there are a ton of these cases getting solved in recent years through genetic genealogy, I want to look for commonalities between them. These are cases that weren’t solved by a targeted search - either someone stumbled on the remains or they had simply been an unidentified body for a long time. So far I have a couple hundred names, but I’ve only filled in supporting evidence for maybe 50. I keep telling myself I’m going to find the time to do more

I have ADHD and cross stitch and embroidery are something I use to chill out at night. Something about it hits that dopamine spot with each stitch. It can fuck up your eyesight if you squint too much though, so get a lil glass you can stitch on and see larger with if that's a problem.

Poker online started with free credit and made quite a bit had a lot of fun learning about it (used to play magic back in the day lol been wanting a card game but just too damn expensive poker online I can play tourneys as cheap as a dollar) Also been big on handheld gaming lately. I like moss collecting. I take a walk and pick up moss in parking lots while my kid is at an activity. Then I come home, wet it and smoosh it into the dirt under an oak tree. Just today, I was bored so started drawing a vaguely hidden picture scene for my nephew. So far, it's a counter with makeup on it. The powder poof on the mirror compact is a pancake with a pat of butter. The mirror shows a chandelier that's actually a spider. One of the squares of eyeshadow is pad of sticky notes while the eyeshadow brush is a matchstick. And one of the two lipstick tubes contains a pawn. So far. Sketching with pencil, finishing with colored pencil. To see if I could because I was bored while he was watching Thundermans. Challenging. Might make a comb into an abridged piano keyboard, why not?

It is an intermittent hobby (which actually works for me) but making a lil whiskey is a lot of fun. I’ve also made rums, vodka, limoncello, and have a small batch of tequila fermenting. I’m not where I can get blue agave hearts and roast them but I am using blue agave syrup (some of which I caramelized) and some blue agave inulin powder. I’m not even a huge tequila fan (not as much as whiskies) but it is fun to know I can make some.

Aside from golf, i got back into my hobby of gaming with Eve Online also. Its a close community so there are always familiar faces online to chat with and talk to. The economy is player driven, supply and demand plays a function and its fun to play market games and station trade items and make money in game doing that. Really cool to do arbitrage and see the dynamics of the market and everything that happens in game interact.

I’m a semi-pro musician/music teacher so sitting and playing guitar/drums/etc isn’t as fun as it used to be. Just built an app from scratch to manage my kiddo’s childcare coverage (I’m an old dad) that let’s us group message family/friends for babysitting needs and they can accept/reject/propose changes/locations etc. I have no coding experience, used Anthropic. Tons of fun, very satisfying. Built in a weekend- from idea to live on the web. Still tweaking here and there, keep adding components here and there that aren’t necessary but fun. Before that, 3D printing weird household items. Like a cup holder for my 64oz water bottle. Or a replacement battery compartment for a broken toy. Still doing that. Just made an under cabinet paper towel holder cause I’m tired of going under the sink. These types of projects are fun because it gives me alone time to think and be creative but it’s still family centered, so not “guilt” about get lost in a hobby.

44 guy here too. I recently picked the guitar back up after a long hiatus, and honestly, it’s done a world of good for me mentally. At first, it was a bit depressing since I had “forgotten” so much, but like the saying goes, it’s like riding a bike. Even if I just play for five minutes in the evening, I feel much more centered and genuinely happy. Not sure if this’ll help at all, but it’s just something that helped me in a similar situation.

Fountain pens. Cathartic to write things down, I forget less things because I’ve got lists, and enjoy the writing, ink selection, nib type, different styles and purposes. Plus a very low threshold to entry. Alternatively on the other end of the cost spectrum 3d printing. Wonderfully rewarding and unlocks so much creativity but it’s as much an art as a science.

3d printing as others have mentioned can be a deep and very fulfilling hobby. Especially if you like designing your own models to print functional things for around the house. I recently discovered software defined radio (SDR). You can get a relatively cheap usb dongle (around $40) and a cheap antenna and start exploring all the different radio frequencies. There’s HAM radio, satellite imagery, weather stations, weird number stations with Morse code.

🏊‍♂️ swimming! Took an adult swim lesson just before covid, prior to having knee surgery that I knew would limit my activity. Joined master’s swimming a couple years ago and was welcomed with open arms despite my inexperience. Just “got into” the fast lane at the club and am genuinely surprised at how much I enjoy it. I dont think i would have liked it in my younger years but it really fits now!

Reading library books thru the Libby app has been so wonderful. I never got to read new books because of the expense. I always waited for the paperback to come out or bought older books from used bookstores. I didn't go to the library because I'm allergic to the way library books smell and I'm a germophobe. But getting them thru the app is so convenient. I only just got a smartphone last year so this ability is new to me.

A couple years ago I sold a bunch of stuff I’d acquired over the years online-action figures, t shirts, stuff like that. I used the money to buy a decent stereo system and records. Kinda late to the game as the prices have become insane since I last bought records in the 90’s, but it’s been a ton of fun, and it’s great to hear music through real speakers again. Whatever takes my fancy at the time, same as I have done my entire life, subject to space and energy constraints (waves in ADHD). Right now it's growing and preserving food. I'm in the process of expanding my collection of raised beds, installing basic dripper irrigation and mulching everything including my pathways. The property we bought in 2024 had a lot of established plants including a few dozen disparate food-bearing trees and shrubs in various stages of neglect, so I've been trying to learn to maintain and care for them properly. I'm particularly interested in preserving/using plant parts/stages/recipe byproducts that can be delicious but for whatever reason are discarded or rarely available for purchase in that form (for example, coriander seeds in their green berry stage are excellent in sauces and refrigerator pickles, and the skins and seeds strained from making raspberry sauce are delicious freeze dried into a kind of crispy raspberry bark). As we approach winter here in the southern hemisphere, I will probably do some sewing and knitting; and I'd like to do some smal woodturning and pottery projects this year. Two large olive trees on my property have cropped very well this year and my friends have indicated they'll help harvest and sort them for preserving when they come ripe in a month or so.

Solo Hobbies: 1. Cross country skiing 2. Mountain biking on "single track" trails. The kind that have green,.blue, and black diamond trails I discovered them during Covid and it is incredible . So fun, plus the challenge of getting over obstacles without putting a foot down and getting up the confidence to ride down some of the steep descents adds a layer of progression to a super fun workout. 3. Gravel biking over every single street, dirt road and bike path in the whole city. I track my progress with Wandrer.earth. This has been shockingly enjoyable. Bikes are the best way to really experience an area. 4. Pokemon Go. Really fun group activity if you have kids. Group activities: 1. Dungeons and Dragons. 2. Board game nights 3. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. No striking, so you dont get marks on you. Amazing workout. Good life skill. 4. Crossfit gyms. Usually very social and build a strong community with excursions and trail running with the gym. 5. LARP'ing. Community + a fun physical activity 6. Sports league. One of the better ways to make friends as an adult. 7. Magic card groups

I brew beer, mead and wine, I do pickles, kimchi, pretty much anything you can ferment, I bake bread, make my own cheese and pretty much always have a project for halloween going. I work from home, my wife is a flight attendant and is gone most days, we have a 5 year old so whatever I am doing basically has to be done with my son. He "helps" me clean and bake which basically translates to, I give him a bucket of water to play in or a ball of dough to kneed. This weekend we are making homemade root beer and ice cream for floats when the root beer is ready.

I trade beer and spent grain for eggs from my neighbor's chickens, or his homemade salsa. During covid, when my job became tenuous, I worked at the local homebrew store, and honestly it was one of the best jobs I ever had. The local homebrew communities can be a great place to make friends. The best thing to come from having my son help me brew is that he now views cleaning as (sometimes) fun. I lost my fake id freshman year of undergrad. I was in a head shop buying clove cigarettes (throwback lol) and I saw they had a small homebrew area. I bought my first kit in 1998 right after my 18th birthday and have been brewing ever since. When my son gets to the dorms, he'll be able to make some absolutely crushable beers. lol

Smoking meats. I was gifted a Traeger when my wife and I got married in 2013. It was new at the time but not riddled with WiFi or other electronics that aren't necessary. I literally turn a knob and fire it off. I keep it clean to prevent issues but I have amassed some spare parts over the years that I needed (like a new temp probe) or were given by people that sold their Traegers and had left over. After 13 years, I finally have to give it a good overhaul, but it's been stupid reliable. I've smoked countless pork shoulders, chuck roasts, burgers, a couple of briskets, tri-tips, chicken, turkey, and more that I'm forgetting. I've also collected quite a few different rubs as people love to gift them to me for my birthday and Xmas. My coworker is also into smoking, so it gives us something to talk about at work besides work. I find it relaxing as it's automated enough that I'm not having to babysit it every 20 seconds so I can do other things while it's running but I also don't like to leave the house while it's going. So then I work on the house, work on my collection of Subarus, yard work, or whatever is on the "Honey Do" list.

It’s free with my library card and even books I thought would be too obscure are usually available as an ebook or audiobook at my library. I’m enjoying making lists of books to read from different countries. Some are a real challenge! I had never had any real interest in the pacific or sailing, but I can’t get enough of books about pacific islands and sea exploration, and the accompanying nautical disasters. Luckily my brother shares similar reading tastes so we can discuss the wild stuff we read. I’m currently reading about the Donner Party at his recommendation and am very confident I’d have died of dysentery very early on the Oregon Trail.

41m. Started taking culinary classes and they've been pretty fun. Took some knife skills classes and use that skill when I volunteer with food prep at a a couple food pantries in the area that also serve meals. I picked up reading again and have been frequenting the public library. I volunteer at the animal shelter in town as a dog walker and it's been really fun and rewarding. My husband and I do crosswords every evening. Lol I listen to audiobooks while painting. I read at least a chapter of a hard copy book every evening. My husband and I play cooperative video games together. I've gotten back into concerts over the last few years. The only thing that sucks is that they typically start when it's time for me to go to bed. 😂 I play solitaire and listen to music. I've also started a self help workbook. I'll spend a couple nights a week doing that and journaling.

Woodworking here. Hardly a cheap hobby, but you can do some really cool projects with hand tools only in the cheap. Luckily I have a very supporting wife who enjoys being able to throw the occasional "Hey, you know what would look.good here?" Project at me and more often than not, i can make something tonfut her vision, so she doesn't mind too much when I buy the occasional tool for the garage shop.

I got into bowling last year, I’m 44 as well. Always bowled for fun occasionally growing up but it’s a completely different game when you get your own equipment and join a league. 3D printing. Hear me out. You can get a consumer grade printer that just Prints. No tinkering or prior knowledge truly required. Bambu A1 (bambu is selling them for $400 right now) with AMS lite - automatic material system - allows you to print in up to 4 different colors at the same time. There are resources EVERYWHERE to help you on your journey. I started 6 years ago (I was a bit younger than you are now) and I can now use free design software (CAD) to create things for around the house. From decorations (made a stained glass-ish cardinal for our window using transparent filament) to useful items (designed a magnet mounted water filter faucet for the filter under the sink). Can't think of anything to print? Go to makerwold.com and pick something. 95% of the designs are free! It's the hobby I've been looking for my entire life! Side note: I've been printing lightsabers since the beginning and I don't ever plan on stopping.

Finally something right up my alley. Same age here, with kids. I have an obsession in learning new hobbies, and love new endless holes to dive into, apparently. Ultimately though, almost all interests require some time and $ dedication. Just start down any road that sounds interesting, you can always bail and sell the items if it's not worth it. I'm WAY too excited to talk about any of the below, and could save you time if you DM me any questions. Since my boy is slightly older now, I've started bringing him along with a few of these and found that experience to be one I can't get enough of. All of these I've spent a ton of time doing, probably forgetting some: Abstract painting, pipe smoking, kite surfing, surf/snow/skate, woodworking, leathercrafting (top of the pile right now), reading, paragliding (stopped since ya know, dying and all), long distance cycling / bike touring (camping), cooking!, roller skating, ice hockey, kayak fishing, music (guitar/cello/piano), house music production, camping, old typewriters, photography (professionally) - digital+analog, and definitely gaming of course (arc raiders ftw) My wife deserves medals for what she has to put up with.

Join a Brazilian jiujitsu gym. Great work out (700-1000 calories burn per class), it’s a lot of fun, learn practical self defense, it’s very challenging and usually good and friendly communities. I started at 41, never done any martial arts before and absolutely love it.

What are yours that seem to far to reach? Maybe we can crowd source some ideas! I crochet. I do easy projects with easy repetitive stitches when I feel anxious or overwhelmed. It kind of works like meditation, but I can't get deep into meditation. It's not for me. I enjoy the usual reading and fun shows I can binge as well. I live in a big ole metro area with all the things available- beach, desert, snow, mountains, hiking, all that. I pretty much stay near the beach and the big ass park with museums. It's San Diego, I don't know why I was being cryptic, it's obvious on my profile. 🙈 I want to learn pottery though. There's a place for that! I also want to paddle board, when I have that kind of $$, I can! I find that just getting out there and doing something you want to do, you hook up with people that are into the same shit and beyond. Not everyone's gonna be your cuppa, also, there is some gems you'll meet. Those gems will keep you coming back (I'm not talking 12 step unless you need it, just using the term 😆) because they are so fun and awesome to be around.

I went with my kids to a place you can do art stuff. They painted stuff and I decided on a mosaic (never tried it)... cool thing is, you only pay when you begin the thing, and can keep going back and work on it for no charge. I paid $30 and was able to go back a dozen times til I finished it (I found time here and there to go alone and it was so relaxing). Great thing about mosaics is that there is no "perfect" way to do it. However I do a design, I feel relaxed and I'm left with a feeling of satisfaction. I'm 46, never considered myself creative or artsy.

This feels like a "me me me.. oh look at me!" Reply, but that's not my intention. Just trying to help with some ideas that worked for me. I learned to snowboard in my very late 30s. Now it's my peaceful place I go to escape everything else.. just me, the woods and some snow. Sure, I'll bring my kids/wife some times, but most of the time it's just for me. Last summer I bought a mountain bike and I was hitting the trails after work during the week to yell at a tree and get my frustrations of the day out. (Not downhill mtb, I will hurt myself as I tend to do stupid stuff at high speeds) I've also leaned into the local parks and rec for things in the summer/fall: My wife and I are taking French lessons in May, as we live on the border of Quebec and I'm there enough.. I want to be able to talk to folks there when I need directions and the GPS ain't cutting it! Uh... I falso found out I really like pickleball last fall... I hate the rules,(they just don't make sense and there are too many of them!) but I like the game. I still will build a Lego set a couple times a year. I'm working on Voltron right now and then the enterprise after that. (I suck at models/painting, so Legos it is!) Friends at work are trying to get me in a DnD campaign. I'm not imaginative enough to pull it off. Still playing video games in my late 40s. Screw anyone that says I'm too old for that lol. Seeing more concerts now than I did in my 20s. I will actually travel to see the bucket list artists that I want to see before they stop touring. Hope that helps toss some ideas in your head.

I am learning new languages. I basically just start learning the language of whatever country I plan to visit next. I don’t expect to become fluent but it’s helped me to read signs and menus and get around on public transport and understand what people are yelling at me on the subway. I tried the ukulele but my arthritis wasn’t a fan. I’m going to try again eventually, maybe take in person lessons so they can help me with my grip. And I’m trying to learn to crochet again, but I have only gotten as far as buying the supplies.

I love light line surf fishing but it requires an ocean nearby. 3d printing is a fun hobby and there’s endless number of useful things you can either design yourself or download and print from a variety of sites. I like to make electronics projects to automate stuff in my house…that can be very time consuming tho. Solo board gaming is a niche within a niche hobby but some games out there are actually more fun by yourself than with others (like Spirit Island).

Summers are not an issue, but the long winters where I live are interminable, so I took up ice fishing last year. These last two winters have flown by as a result. There’s a little bit of a learning curve and it can be a bit of an investment (watching an underwater camera is a blast even when you don’t catch anything, I highly recommend it).

Mostly video games - I play MMOs solo and also always have a non-MMO game that I can play with my husband (he’s bad at them). That’s what we do for our general hang out together time. I read a lot - both print and audiobooks. I discovered over the past year and a half that I really enjoy casinos, but that can be a very expensive hobby. Also, lots of fairly local exploration - we generally don’t go away for more than a night or two at a time, but we’ve been able to explore a lot really cool places all over New England, since we stay close to home. I really like touring historic houses (The Breakers, House of the Seven Gables, and Castle in the Clouds are a few that we’ve done recently)

Reading - Between free library apps like Libby and Hoopla, I buy maybe 1-2 books a month making this a very affordable hobby, just pick up and read when you have time, and better than scrolling reddit/short video apps Tennis - I picked up 1.5 years ago. You can spend the amount of time and money you want on it. Not a cheap hobby per se, I spend ~$125 a month on weekly 1 hour group lessons at the rec center. Racket is like $180-280 new, half that used/clearance. Balls aren't expensive even for the nice ones unless you're playing a lot more than me. Plenty of free tennis courts to use to hit with a friend. There are chances to make friends playing too. Now if you go all in with club/league your time commitment and costs go up. Board Games/D&D - there are free sites like board game arena where you can play people online for free. Select your game based on time you have to play. Bonus, you can get board games and play with your kids/spouse which is rewarding. Family centered games are like $25. Always something to do on a rainy day. D&D is super cheap, one campaign book is like $40 and even if you're buying it on Roll20 and DND beyond, split amongst 3-5 players, it is dirt cheap and lasts for months/years to complete. Working out - you should be weight training and doing some cardio just to take care of yourself any ways.

Writing - Sometimes writing can be more engaging then reading. Plus you don't have to be good at it to enjoy it. I find "micro" writing to be fun. Try to tell a story in a paragraph or less. Crochet or knitting. You can go big with quilting if you like. Running or biking. Board games and/or D&D.

I took up woodworking several years ago. It’s become a really rewarding hobby and it’s nice to see things I’ve built around the house and yard. Also gardening, growing veggies and learning about sustainable and organic agriculture. Video games when it’s too cold/wet to be outside. I also play music, but I don’t count that since it’s part of my job (music professor). I do play a lot for fun though and have a local chamber group I occasionally perform with. My wife loves hiking and we take something nice long road trips together. I think it’s great to have a variety of hobbies for different conditions and one or two that you can do with the family. Having at least one that is just yours is important though, imo.

I cycle through a bunch of hobbies just depending on what I’m vibing with at the time. For stuff that’s low-ish investment there’s card tricks, drawing (charcoal pencil on newsprint is fast and cheap, especially if you’re getting started), long solo walks around my city (sometimes punctuated by a stop for a drink or snack at a neat place I come across), hand sewing, meditating, actively/critically listening to music, smoking a corncob pipe, making small things out of leather, and whittling. Most of those can be done in short bursts if time is limited and for minimal investment in specialty tools/supplies. Sometimes I like to find a house on Zillow and spend a day or two plotting out how I would make it work for myself. I’ll draw up floor plans, figure out additions/remodels, map out the landscaping, sketch some elevations, maybe run up a ballpark estimate. It’s not exactly a hobby, but it keeps me off the streets.

I picked up some Monster Clay. It’s not messy and it doesn’t dry out. You can melt it down and reuse it. If I accidentally make something worth keeping (unlikely) you just make a mold of it and cast it in resin. I’m trying to spend at least 30 minutes farting around with it a day. It’s been fun. My husband is your age. He loves model trains, both making his own layout and seeing them on display at train shows. It can be as expensive or affordable as you’re willing to make it (he does the latter!) He also builds model tanks and airplanes with our son, is very slowly building a cafe racer in the garage, and likes riding his motorcycle around the winding country roads not far from our subdivision. My brother, who is close to your age, has always been a really good cook, but lately has gotten big into baking. For the past year or so he’s been mastering making all sorts of breads and really enjoys it. He’s tried home brewing as well, although that one can be a little more expensive to get into.

I play board games every week with friends through Tabletop Simulator on Steam/PC. Run a bi-weekly tabletop roleplaying game with my same group of friends for the last 25-ish years. Play a ton of different videogames on Steam/PC. Play some couch coop and board games with my teenaged son a couple times a week. I'm an audiobook addict; listen to books during my 45-minute commute and any time I'm running errands/doing chores around the house. Started doing Sudoku logic puzzles over on Logic Masters Germany. I watch more YouTube to unwind these days than traditional television: particular favorites include our fellow Xennials over at RedLetterMedia (particularly Best of the Worst and re:View), Cracking the Cryptic (Sudoku puzzles), couple others.

I knit, crochet (but haven’t in 6 years) and I have an Electric Nano Spinner, which is a small 3-D printed spinning wheel, so I can spin my own purchased unspun wool for such things. I also love to cook overly complicated meals for some dumbass reason. They always taste amazing of course, but time sucks for sure. Any of the fiber arts can get expensive AF. For example I spent over $300 for the yarn for ONE cardigan. That I haven’t even knit yet. My husband does wood working

I still bike ride a good bit when weather permits and enjoy reading and playing video games. I started completing latch hooks about a year ago and enjoy that. It's very easy to learn and I like to give them a gifts. I would like to up my game to knitting someday but am enjoying this hobby for now. Lots of board games with family and friends, too!
