What ever happened to Nora Jones?

The name randomly popped into my head and I remember her being so incredibly huge. I don't think I've heard her mentioned in 15 years now. Where is she and what happened to her?
drewbaccaAWD@reddit
She has a podcast, brings on random musical guests. Highly recommend checking it out!
5hallowbutdeep@reddit
Her performance with her sister Anuskha is one of my favorites. I listen to it at least once a week.
gerardkimblefarthing@reddit
Anoushka Shankar is as amazing on the sitar as their father.
buck-fanger@reddit
I had no idea. That’s amazing.
marteautemps@reddit
She was recently on SNL with Gorillaz if you haven't seen it
MnkyBzns@reddit
Wow...TIL that Norah Jones is Ravi Shankar's daughter
fromthedarqwaves@reddit
I didn’t know about her sister! I’m going to have to watch it.
5hallowbutdeep@reddit
Prepare to have a swirl of emotions inside you. I was teary eyed when I listened to it the first time . Make sure you have good headphones.
5hallowbutdeep@reddit
The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree 😊
peterfromfargo@reddit
I didn’t realize that was her sister. Her performance at the BBC proms this past season was exceptional.
5hallowbutdeep@reddit
Yeah that's her sister.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4gGroSuYWk - this one with Harry Mack is fun.
MnkyBzns@reddit
Harry Mack strikes me as an all around, genuinely enjoyable person
birchskin@reddit
I just randomly saw her interview Harry Mack and she jammed on the piano while he drummed and freestyled, was pretty cool
Confident-Square-438@reddit
The Josh Homme one was great!

Yes, I really enjoy it! She has great candid conversations and the duets are always amazing.

Does she ever talk about her dad?
InfernalGout@reddit
Her sister Anushka Shankar too!
drewbaccaAWD@reddit
I've only caught a couple of episodes as she was interviewing other artists I'm into.. so only discovered this myself about a month ago and haven't done a deep dive yet. So unfortunately, I don't know.
Equivalent-Grade-142@reddit
Welp I’ve gotta be the only Xennial that loathes Norah Jones’ music. I hard cringed every time it came on the radio (which was a lot). To be fair I hate all “breathy girl” whisper music, but I have nothing against her as a person (I know nothing about her as a person) and it’s nice to know she’s thriving.
Chemical_Butterfly40@reddit
I accidentally got her album from Columbia House when I forgot to cancel. It was pretty good.
Effective_Egg_3066@reddit
Was this one of those monthly CD subscription services? That's a throwback
ExampleLittle2672@reddit
Throw harder, they also did cassettes. 10? for a penny, and then... your parents want a chat.
redditshy@reddit
Wouldn’t that “agreement” be unenforceable, because a minor can not sign a contract?
ExampleLittle2672@reddit
Very probably, yes. I have a vague memory of general discussions about exactly this at the time. Still, parents will get you before the lawyers even come close.
kingmobisinvisible@reddit
They did vinyl before they did cassettes.
ExampleLittle2672@reddit
And here I was thinking I could throw harder than the CD era! Humbled! How many albums for a penny before they came for your first born and/or you were grounded for life?
Listentoyourdog@reddit
Wow this comment brought me down memory lane
ExampleLittle2672@reddit
The earlier one did for me too. Thank you. 😊 [cassette emoji here]
joeloud@reddit
Once I tried to order a CD that wasn’t listed on the order form I had. I just assumed Columbia House used all the same codes for their CDs and so I used a number from a different order form in an attempt to order the album I wanted. Then this showed up… my conservative parents were… concerned. I still haven’t even listened to it.
ammodramussavannarum@reddit
You’re missing out! Your musical taste could have been different, and perhaps you would have met different friends and had an entirely different experience in life if you would have just popped it in your player!

I discovered so much music this way! I had to choose extra CDs to get my 12 for 1c. I got Motown classics and Elton John and ended up loving both. Don’t think I would have bought those for 12.99 at the store though.

I worked at a gift shop in Alaska with this cd playing.... I know what you mean...
Josef_Kant_Deal@reddit
For an album that always seems to be at Goodwill, it's pretty good.
Significant_Mode50@reddit
Ok that’s totally true 🤣
ombremullet@reddit
Just drove by a billboard advertising her performing at Yaamava Casino
So, still performing
Nixonsee@reddit
Saw her at Austin City Limits festival a couple years ago. Still around. Hasn’t found a hit like those old ones.
nomorecheeks@reddit
She got sued by her neighbors in Brooklyn for being obnoxious.
2020hindsightis@reddit
oh really? what happened?
washington_705@reddit
She wasn’t sued, lawsuits were threatened bc she wanted to add 10 windows to her Brooklyn townhome and neighbors thought it messed up the historical buildings in the neighborhood under preservation reasons. She reduced to 7 to appease and that was that.
2020hindsightis@reddit
Thnx!

So good! I've always loved this Tom Waits cover. https://youtu.be/DNPQhvVLYbc?si=kNS4bBuXCkNX5qmT
dbzmah@reddit
Her 2024 visions album got pretty heavy play here in North Texas, and she's had some other collaborations like Rome with Jack White and Danger Mouse, and the Little Willies.
BidInteresting8923@reddit
Her breakout album was pretty much written for her. Her next album had more of her original music. I thought it was overall decent but definitely not with the obvious hits.
washington_705@reddit
Interesting I’m reading she wrote some songs on the album so it’s not as though she had no writing participation.
She didn’t write don’t know why but did write come away with me, nightingale, and co wrote the long day is over
BidInteresting8923@reddit
I really like Norah Jones. I’m not saying she couldn’t write or anything. And I love Come Away With Me as a song. And I really liked Nightingale too.
I bought both CDs and I just recall feeling like the first felt more “produced” for success. Like it was really intentional about trying to be a hit album. I can’t really express fully what I mean.
The second album seemed more authentically her to me. I recall it having a more country/folk vibe and less classic bluesy.
washington_705@reddit
I get what you mean and just wanted to give her some props for songwriting!
In general in that early 2000s landscape her first album was a nice change with a laid back intimate coffee shop style vs the highly produced pop at the time. It was an interesting one because parents and kids alike all could listen to it. I remember countless car rides with my parents where we couldn’t agree on music, but that album worked well for everyone.
I agree her second album went in a different direction, but I think that’s more her wanting to explore different things and that second album isn’t necessarily indicative of anything other than exploring other styles she enjoys. And I respect that! Some bands put out the same sounding record over and over again. some of her later albums are also totally different vibes and genres! So she’s continued to do this.
In fact someone in this thread referenced the “foreverly” album and I gave that a listen and wow, just a totally different thing.
But to your point I do think a lot of people bought the second album expecting it to be come away with me part two and were disappointed. But that’s kind of their fault? I recently had a similar experience where I went into a movie, expecting one thing and it wasn’t that and at first I was disappointed, but then I realized it was my fault.
Anyway, thanks for offering your thoughts here. You make some really interesting points and I appreciate the conversation!
pashaah@reddit
Try her album 'begin again''. She is a great song writer.
vivahermione@reddit
Interesting. Some people are better interpreters than they are songwriters.
JudgeImaginary4266@reddit
Don’t know why (she disappeared). We loved her so.
TheJefusWrench@reddit
She did Something Stupid recently.

I got downvoted for posting a link to a recent performance. Brilliant.
weatherhaboob@reddit
She still plays. I’m going with my wife in a few weeks.
edasto42@reddit
Are you talking about Norah Jones the singer/pianist? If so, she’s still performing and has 2 shows in my area in a couple weeks. Put out an album about a year or so ago. Still pretty popular in jazz circles
mrbuh@reddit
Now's the one time per decade when it's relevant for me to tell everyone - I went to junior high with her!
jbrown383@reddit
Hello fellow Dallas-ite
ExampleLittle2672@reddit
"NO WAY! What was she like?! Did you know?! Do you have her number?!"
Gentle teasing, I hope that we can all agree on Oh cool! Fun year book/school photo!
mrbuh@reddit
I knew her, but not well. We were both in the school band (she played saxophone). We only overlapped one year, and only talked a few times, and it wouldn't surprise me if she didn't remember me at all - I probably only remember her because I started hearing her name on the radio.
With that said, I remember 14 year old her as mostly nice but a little snobby sometimes. She made clever jokes and sometimes they were cutting. I was nerdy and insecure and felt intimidated by her popular-girl energy.
Administrative-Flan9@reddit
Small world. More or less the same for me
Guyinaredhat420@reddit
She’s touring . Support Nora!
cityfireguy@reddit
Seen her live and she's incredible
fickenfracken@reddit
Agreed. She played in my hometown last summer. She sounds amazing live.
zenitram66@reddit
Norah still performs from what I know. Saw her at ACL 2024. Good show and had a pretty sizable crowd at her stage. And her podcast is good too.
Nervous-Avocado1346@reddit
Her album with Billie Joe is gorgeous, all Everly Brothers covers. And she has some great duets with Dolly, too.
Combatical@reddit
I've been watching her podcast or whatever. It's pretty cool, I got baited into it when josh homme was on there.
Citycrossed@reddit
We saw her perform ten years ago or so. It was in a small venue. She was amazing live!

Nora Jones and Mike Patton

She still makes music. And it’s still really good. Also, check out her Podcast where she jams with various musicians on their songs.

I love her cover of "Black Hole Sun"
zuanto@reddit
Wow. After reading the thread I went down hole looking into her stuff out there now. Holy cow, I need to pay more attention to her again!
RetailBookworm@reddit
She’s still making good jazz, just not getting pushed as crossover pop anymore.
AbsurdistWordist@reddit
She has made lots and lots of music in different genres. Some of it is soft and jazzy like her first album, but she’s also done some great collabs. I think her 2012 release Little Broken Hearts is super underrated.
This is my favorite song from that album:

0le_Hickory@reddit
She could never cum, don't know why.
badgerhammer0408@reddit
Not with you, at least.
Wreckingshops@reddit
She still sells out big theatres on tours, releases albums, collabs with people like Jeff Tweedy, has a successful podcast that is interviews and performances with other musicians, etc.
My wife is still a big fan. She's pretty good live. Usually throws in cool covers like "Black Hole Sun" into her sets.
AbsurdistWordist@reddit
Her cover of Black Hole Sun is transcendent.
PineappleFit317@reddit
She put out a new album last year or the year before.
bananabastard@reddit
I was just watching her podcast a few days ago.
guidevocal82@reddit
She's still making music and it's still pretty good. She released a new album last year.
the_pretender_nz@reddit
Do yourself a favour and listen to the entirety of Peeping Tom (self-titled album). Not only is it just… Mike Patton being a god, but there’s a duet with Norah Jones called Sucker (second to last track I think)
delldarlin@reddit
I mostly know her from that spaghetti western album (Rome) Danger Mouse did with Daniele Luppi. Jack White was on it too. Damn good record.
timbreandsteel@reddit
Don't hear many people talk about that one. But it's so good.
norcalscan@reddit
Danger Mouse, holy dang totally forgot that name.
ElectricalTravel9742@reddit
Be sure to check out her recordings with The Little Willies

I have two of her albums on CD that I listen to often. Never thought about if she released any others or if she's even still around. Good question I guess.
pashaah@reddit
I love her album 'begin again'. Its her second most recent album. Give it a try.
maxwasatch@reddit
I borrowed some of her newer stuff from the library. It was not as good as the first couple discs.
pashaah@reddit
I wholeheartedly dissagree. Her 'begin again' album is mindblowingly good!

She’s hosting a pretty fun podcast currently. Norah Jones plays along with… and has a different musical guest each week where she plays along with them to their songs and they chat in between. Lucius and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme were recent standouts for me.
Taanistat@reddit
You can watch the episodes on YouTube. Discovered it because I was watching a bunch of old music videos and the Josh Homme episode popped up. I loved it. Super wholesome to watch two accomplished musicians just jam together, no pressure.
norcalscan@reddit
Norah, and she is phenomenal musician still, good presence on youtube accompanying other musicians in a podcast/conversation kind of feel. And she’s a mom now, and that changed her perspective on life too, so it’s fun to see her grow up with us.
lakebistcho@reddit
She's absolutely still around. Does a podcast where she sings with other musicians.

Norah is still touring and she is exceptional. Five days after Chris Cornell passed she performed what might be the best Soundgarden cover ever, and paid tribute to an incredible artist.

She performed at Willie Nelson's 90th birthday concert a few years ago. She was great.

She still tours. Saw her live a year or two ago.
aqiwpdhe@reddit
Interesting story… I saw Neil Young in concert sometime around 2015/2016. There was this band Puss n Boots opening. I enjoyed their act, but the whole time I kept saying how much the singer reminded me of Norah Jones. Turned out it was her new band.
Tofuloaf@reddit
There was a period of about a decade after she blew up where, whether due to the influence of her and singers that came before her with similar vocal qualities, or just general trends in music, it felt like every other precocious ingénue in music converged on what I think of as "smokey indie singer-songwriter voice".
I'm confident that on more than one occasion over the years, I've been in some cafe and thought "oh it's another one of those Norah Jones cosplay vocalist over non-threatening folk/Japanese influenced lounge songs" after hearing an actual newer Norah Jones song.
Probably harder to stand out when there are a legion of singers who went through their teens looking to you as the shining example of who they want to sound like, especially when a passable imitation of your vocal sound can be achieved without natural talent or technical ability, unlike your typical whistle note divas.
Disclaimer: I know nothing about any of this. I'm a metalhead who only ever heard Norah Jones via TV ads for her breakthrough album, while dutifully recording the latest episode of buffy/angel on vhs. Every time I heard her though I never thought anything less kind than "shit's pleasant, yo."
MoarFlavor@reddit
She did a haunting live rendition of Black Hole Sun as a tribute to the lead singer (Chris Cornell) from Soundgarden.
