Upgrade or New Build?

That's very similar to my previous build although I had a different motherboard and more RAM. Quite frankly you're going to need to replace a lot of things to get it in line with modern hardware, here's a short summary of what I went with and why: My 1070 randomly died a while back so I had to urgently buy whatever I could afford and ended up with a 4060. It honestly works fine for most things so I'm gonna stick with it for now, but I'd suggest something with more VRAM if your budget allows for it. For the CPU I went with a 9800X3D because it was just about the best thing available at the time. Turns out that AMD supports their stuff for far longer than Intel, so upgrading down the line without swapping the motherboard is possible if needed. But with moore's law being dead and all, I'm sure this thing will last for a very long time. I decided on X670E for the motherboard since I have no need for the USB4 on the 800-series and could save quite a bit of money there. Have a look at [the table of differences between the chipsets](https://amd.com/en/products/processors/chipsets/am5.html) to see what works for you. Previously had 32GB of RAM but occasionally hit the ceiling in that so figured 64GB of DDR5 was a no brainer, and I was able to get it for about the same as I paid for my 32GB of DDR4 back in 2016. But that was before the recent AI datacenter price hike on flash memory, so right now I'd suggest going for as little as you need and hope that the price comes back down in a few years. Went for a new, bigger and faster SSD for my OS. 4TB 990 Pro. That was also before the price craziness, which made both of these two components cost more than the rest combined. The things I kept from my old build were the case, fans, cooler (shoutout to noctua for the free mounting kit upgrade), drives, and PSU. If you're going for a high-end modern GPU you'll probably have to upgrade yours, but for my use case the 750W one I had still works perfectly.

Genuine Question Regarding Tech Nowadays

If you get deep enough into the weeds of this stuff you tend to just pick up on how model naming for various manufacturers and components go. Especially for the common/important parts of each hardware generation. And once you finally managed to grasp it all, the marketing department decides to switch it up with new and even more confusing branding for no good reason.

Can We Please Have An Honest Conversation About CPU Overkill For Average Users

Posted by dahiparatha@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 325 comments

repocin@reddit

>If your bottleneck is your GPU, which it usually is in gaming, spending substantially more on a CPU that your GPU will never let stretch its legs is money that would have done more work elsewhere. Counterpoint: you can almost buy an entire top-of-the-line CPU for the price difference between two tiers of GPU these days. If you're only building a single machine, skimping out on the CPU and saving $50-100 or whatever is just silly at current pricing.

No, I never have. Videos can be entertaining, but I've never considered them to be good learning material. I prefer documentation and books. Perhaps the odd blog post, or distilled knowledge from stackoverflow. But not videos, they get outdated too fast and can't be easily searched.

It's very dependent on the game, but the vast majority I've come across do indeed only support all the feature when wired. There was a recent project for a rpi zero-based wireless dongle that gained some traction though. It supposedly lets people use all the features wirelessly by presenting itself as wired to the PC. But it's whatever, really. I personally don't mind using a cable, and the battery life isn't the best on these things anyways.

But anyways, I'll never not find the korean dudes upset about the pinching gesture to be hilarious. The lengths they've gone to have things censored and modified to their preference all because they can't deal with any hand gestures vaguely shaped like that is absurd and it anything just legitimizes it.

It was supposed to come out sometime during the first half of the year but has been postponed indefinitely due to current RAM pricing. So, sometime between now and the heat death of the universe. But probably not any sooner than by the end of the year, if I were to take a guess.

>so did the header get knocked off? Comparing to various pictures I can find of the thing online it sure seems that way, yes. Might've been ripped out by the previous owner while removing the connector? Did you buy this from the Hulk or something? In any case, unless there's more damage to the board somewhere you could probably just solder another header onto it. Maybe have a friend do it in case you don't have a soldering iron. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

NH-D15 G2 + Kingston Fury Beast RAM Clearance

Here's what [Noctua's own compatibility checker](https://noctua.at/en/compatibility/by-components/ram/kingston-fury-beast-udimm-ddr5?ramStandardId=5&vendorId=34&socketGroupIds=13) has to say about it: >Front fan overhangs RAM slots. If there is sufficient space inside the case, the front fan can be installed in a higher position to clear the RAM modules ([see linked FAQ](https://noctua.at/en/support/faqs/what-is-the-ram-clearance-of-my-noctua-cpu-cooler)). Another useful support article - [How can I ensure both case and RAM compatibility with my NH-D15 (G2)?](https://noctua.at/en/support/faqs/how-can-i-ensure-both-case-and-ram-compatibility-with-my-nh-d15) >Can anyone confirm that this configuration should physically fit? [Fractal Torrent](https://www.fractal-design.com/products/cases/torrent/torrent/black-rgb-tg-light-tint#specifications) lists 188mm for CPU cooler in the specs, I've personally got a [Fractal Define R5](https://fractal-design.com/products/cases/define/define-r5/blackout#specifications) with a cooler clearance of 180mm, Kingston Fury Beast DDR5 2x32GB (KF560C30BBEK2-64) and the older NH-D15. Seeing as it fits just fine in my case, I don't see any reason why the G2 wouldn't work for you.

>MIT recently did a study on long term cognitive debt. I suggest you look into it. [This one?](https://media.mit.edu/publications/your-brain-on-chatgpt) ([arxiv fulltext)](https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.08872)) I've only read the abstract so far, but I can't say I'm surprised by their findings. If you don't use your brain, it stops braining right - and you don't want that. I'm very concerned about the cognitive impact this tech is going to have on society as a whole, especially once it starts creeping into education of future generations. We've already seen a massive reduction in people's attention span caused by social media, so I can't outsourcing what's left of our cognitive functions to a machine is going to do us much good.

>And when you need to get a new battery in five years, you're screwed. It's wasteful to buy a new laptop when you just need to replace the battery. That is indeed incredibly wasteful, which is what [the EU battery regulation](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A02023R1542-20250731) that comes into effect next year aims to solve. It dictates that batteries must be easily replaceable with common tools and must be available for at least five years after the last unit was put up for sale on the market.

If you take some time to [pre-configure an autounattend file](https://schneegans.de/windows/unattend-generator) you can get rid of most garbage during setup without touching anything. I think it took me about seven minutes to install Windows from the moment I hit the power button to the desktop after assembling my new build back in October, and there's no sign of garbage like OneDrive fucking up my folders, Office nagging about some subscription I don't want, or disk encryption tied to an online account. Definitely the way to go if you still need Windows for one reason or another.

I've also been playing Arkngiths: Endfield quite a lot since its release earlier this year, almost exclusively with my DualSense because I love the haptics and adaptive triggers. They've done a pretty good job with them in this game. It's by far my favorite controller out of all the ones I've tried over the years. Very comfortable to hold, good material choices all around, and packed with cool tech.
