any tips to prevent that?
MC_Red_D@reddit
Train your cat to not do that
PsyOmega@reddit
As if that's even possible
Zestyclose-Monk-8197@reddit
Squirt bottle
passwordistako@reddit
If I can train my cat to sit, high-five, and roll over, you can train yours to stay off the computer.
MC_Red_D@reddit
My uncle taught his cat to play dead when he pointed his hand at it like a gun and said bang. Then he would scoop it up on his foot and the cat would just be draped over his foot like he was dead and he could bounce him up and down and that Cat wouldn't move and then he would kick him off and the cat would land on his feet and start walking away like nothing ever happened.
MC_Red_D@reddit
It is. I used to have an uncle that trained all of his cats to do all sorts of things or not do things, and he always swore up and down that it was easier to train a cat than a dog.
Calvin_Cruelidge@reddit
This. Wasnt hitting my power button but one of my cats would hover in front of the screen for attention. Bought a cat bed to put on my desk and every time it wanted attention i would pick it up and pet while it layed in the bed and stopped as soon as it stood up. They are smart animals but they are still animals. Positive reinforcement goes a long way
MC_Red_D@reddit
Negative reinforcement works as well. Most people don't even know what that means, they think it means punishment. It actually just means not rewarding them. Animals hate it when you ignore them and it can be one of the most powerful tools and owner has.
SmooK_LV@reddit
Nah, just cover the button. It's nice to have your cat nearby.
ZjY5MjFk@reddit
You can put a piece of double sided tape on the power button and/or area around it. For some reason, most cats HATE sticky tap and will actively avoid it.
fashnek@reddit
Just a tiny bag of potpourri (NOT liquid, not oils) with citrus smell should be enough. Urine is a LOT for the inside of a home.
Beerman_173@reddit
You should install a decoy power button
Cohacq@reddit
Put something on top of it?
Gudfark@reddit
Use a different power on/off option like a remote?
This is only £19 from Amazon....
https://amzn.eu/d/0bUC15LE
HotepHatt@reddit
I made a cap using hot glue and a Gatorade lid, 4 dots of glue that the cap fits over, scraped off nicely when I didn’t need it anymore.
dione2014@reddit
i taped a cardboard on top of my power button, however its only taped one side so I can still open it and press power button if I need to,
or you can tape it shut and use Wake on Lan function from your phone to power up your pc
but most of the time I just use hibernate and use the mouse to wake up so I rarely use power button anyway
aygross@reddit
No idea why nobody has given you the correct answer yet.
This is what I use with my cats. Its a little Flippy plastic cover on AliExpress.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005010422365831.html
Still have a power button but don't have to worry.
Ok_Bite_9633@reddit
You can get an external power button. Just unplug the original cable and plug in the new one. Keep it somewhere cat free
TommyV8008@reddit
I don’t know the physical layout that you have goin for various computers, for analog tape recording decks in recording studios, etc., we used to just tape a bottle cap over the power switch to eliminate the accidents.
Not the most aesthetic approach, but it’s a quick way to get it done while you work out a different approach, such as modifying the wiring or what not
topIRMD@reddit
Very easy - get a stove knob cover with an adhesive backing and stick it on.
Offline86@reddit
Install a cap like the ones found on fighter game joysticks. But never show her how you open it ;)
SanityIsOptional@reddit
Yup, 3d printed my friend one since he had the same issue. Can also buy off Amazon or etsy.
Tessiia@reddit
I've been meaning to do this for a while, so I've just set one to print now. Thanks for the reminder.
I love the bambu lab app. So many useful prints, ready to go.
GreatAlbatross@reddit
I have mollyguards for my cat. The bugger learned how to flip them, and will sit there going "flip flip flip" all day.
Amusingly through, they won't press the button underneath, so it's all good.
theoneandonlymd@reddit
I had a similar issue years ago when case modding was more prevalent. I got an actual rocker switch with the cap but rather than wiring it directly, I had it wired in series with the power button, so I would have to flip the cover and toggle the switch which would basically "enable" the power button to work. If it was flipped closed, the power button would not be able to complete the circuit.
Amells@reddit
Nah just change power button behaviour in windows settings...
c0nsolecowboy@reddit
Disable power button in windows
disgruntledempanada@reddit
My 217 case has two power buttons, one on the bottom near the IO and one on the top. I just pulled the button out on the top.
DeLaVicci@reddit
Why pull the button when you can just unplug from the mobo
chavenz@reddit
So if you unplug from the mobo how do you turn on the PC?
disgruntledempanada@reddit
It's daisy chained off of the button below I still use. Only pulled the button internally, invisible on the outside, just my computer doesn't shut down if I pull and replace the top panel or my cat wants to jump up on the PC.
twilighttwister@reddit
Daisy chains are serial, your buttons are parallel.
DeLaVicci@reddit
Cut the wires for the button that you don't use with enough lead space to resolder if needed. Tape off the cut ends, maybe sleeve with something so it doesn't look atrocious and Bob's your uncle
disgruntledempanada@reddit
It's already cleanly routed through the case up to the button. The inner button is the only thing I've removed, and I've just pulled to the side underneath the top panel, the button is still there and looks exactly the same from the outside. That and I can reverse it in 2 seconds by pupping the little button back into its slot. There's a button integrated into the top panel that pushes down and presses the actual wired button.
Ecstatic-Vermicelli2@reddit
Yeah, way better than putting a cover on it. Just shut down your PC from the start menu. And if your cat is holding the button for 5-10 seconds, you got bigger problems. In that case i recommend getting an excorcist.
Hijakkr@reddit
My cats love sitting on top of their favorite heated tower, and sometimes their paw comes to rest directly on the power button, so this option helped but didn't fully fix the problem. I put something on top of the case to help keep them off the power button part, but it's only temporary until I get the motivation to figure out a better fix.
Ockvil@reddit
Be careful with that. Besides the increased hair/dust concern, I know someone who lost their GPU to a barfing cat sitting on top of their PC.
EffectiveBowler7690@reddit
Happened to me, as I just wrote. But my pc parts were spared. 🙏
Hijakkr@reddit
Like the other person that already commented, my case doesn't have any vents in the top. I've had it for probably a decade now and haven't had any issues. I also have intake fans on the front with filters and no exhaust fans besides the PSU, which pretty much eliminates dust. I clean the filters every six months to a year, and haven't had to clean anything else inside the case itself.
audigex@reddit
Yeah I have a cat who likes to sit on my PC, so limited my case choices to ones without a top vent for that exact reason
It doesn’t guarantee she can’t damage it, but it’s much less likely
Dysan27@reddit
doesn't always help. If they hold it for 5 seconds it usually causes a hard shut down.
I thankfully somehow trained my cat out of resting her pawnon the power button.
Liason774@reddit
Can change that behavior in bios usually
Admirable_Theme2372@reddit
I'm pretty sure cats don't have BIOS installed
MWink64@reddit
Of course they don't, they have a UEFI (Unified Extensible Feline Interface).
Domspun@reddit
Well I tried all sort of ways, got scars to prove it, can't change any settings on the cat.
Dachannien@reddit
That's rough, mine just wanted an admin password.
Reztroz@reddit
I think you meant a pawsword
UpstairsConnection57@reddit

unimportantinfodump@reddit
Cat seems smarter than the owner here this might not work. What's stopping the cat logging in and turning back on
kermityfrog2@reddit
Yeah my cat keeps trying to beat my high score in games.
thuggishruggishboner@reddit
Fuck it, just unplug the wires to the MB. Just short em with a flathead everytime you turn the PC on.
Efficient_Advice_380@reddit
How would you boot it then?
SirMaster@reddit
Wake on LAN from your phone.
Crazy-Newspaper-8523@reddit
Via power button
Efficient_Advice_380@reddit
XD
AdvancedTeacher9446@reddit
You think windows controls power button when the pc is off? 😂
Middcore@reddit
Windows settings only apply once Windows has started.
If the computer is off, Windows is obviously not running. Pushing the power button will do what it always does, turning the system on by bridging two pins on the motherboard.
Once the computer is on, Windows will boot and its settings will take over.
Dzov@reddit
This is an excellent idea. I ended up taping a piece of cardboard over my power button.
NikosAkaSniperEXE@reddit
Why did I laugh to this
the--dud@reddit
I put a little bit of cardboard over the power button. Then I just move that when I need to use it.
Ner0_1ceDra9n@reddit
Catch it on video and post it first before you do anything to prevent it
Scrudge1@reddit
Buy a separate power button switch that is controlled outside the case. It connects to the two little connectors like the front panel does except it's got enough cable you install it onto the desk or something.
RevenantMetalMouth@reddit
It's a learned behavior. Cats learn what gets attention, postive or negative an most likely wanta to play or receive fuss. Instead of going to extremes, maybe see what you can do instead to dissuade him/her.
creeper6530@reddit
Pay attention to your cat.
EffectiveBowler7690@reddit
My cat used to do this all the time. I had a very nice case that had the power and reset buttons on top. My cat would constantly jump on top of my PC and sleep up there. She would constantly shut off my PC when I was using it, or reset it, or turn it on when I was at work. I tried to block the top, but she wasn’t having it. She’d just knock off whatever was there.
I had to find a new case with buttons on the face by the USB / Audio ports. But then she was throwing up frequently, and she vomited right into the top fan. I had to immediately take the PC apart and clean vomit from the top fan, the CPU fan, the video card radiator and my sound card. So from that point, I enshrouded the case in a thick towel when not in use. She crossed the rainbow 🌈 bridge last year. I still keep the towel over the case. I have placed her ashes next to the computer. 😢
Frightlever@reddit
You can glue a bottle cap on it. Tell it that if it keeps shutting the PC down you'll glue more onto it.
apartment1i@reddit
You forgot to set your cat trap
SteezBreeze@reddit
You can change what the power button do in BIOS. Remove the front panel connectors from the motherboard so when pushing the button it actually does nothing. Or you can change what the power button do in windows. For example to can change it to the off the display instead of turn off the PC.
derkapitan@reddit
I made This for my friends cat that always laid on the top of his case. just stuck it on there with double side tape.
Aware_Desk_4797@reddit
I placed a heavy mug on top of my power button for that exact reason. Then I just move it out of the way when I need tk use the button
Swank_on_a_plank@reddit
I just leave my controller on top so it's not possible.
Fantastic-Travel_77@reddit

SmooK_LV@reddit

Cat owners training their pet? Unheard of...
wsteelerfan7@reddit
Cats always want to be with you and see what you're doing. If you block them, they'll just magically liquid themselves around your arm mid-jump and still get on your desk and immediately jump to your computer. Plus, they just jump up there when you're gone anyway. Only solutions are to build some shelf above for them or just cover the button. Cats don't understand punishment or cause and effect really, so grabbing them and putting them down only just tells them you don't like them.
Fantastic-Travel_77@reddit
I have cats. I don't let them jump on or around my setup. They don't even try anymore. I also have indoor cameras and they don't when I'm away, either...🤷
Bad-Kaiju@reddit
I have cat that I don't let up on my entertainment center, but she does it when I'm home because she knows it'll get a reaction out of me. I've tried everything from playing with her to tire her out, to squirt bottles, and she still tries it. Meanwhile, my other cat did it twice before he got the picture and doesn't do it anymore. Some cats are just stubborn.
RogLatimer118@reddit
So your PC is catatonic, then?

I took an old driver's license and put some poster putty on it, made sure it only touched the solid metal to the side of the button, and covered it that way.
Easy enough to move out of the way and put back on, and it can be wiped completely off, too.
Before I blocked it, my favourite was when she would turn the power off and give me a good long stare as things started shutting down.

No need for modding. They make standard PC specific things like this for $8. Here's an Oddtone PC Power Button for $8 with 65 inch cable that takes the place of your cases' POWER SW header.
https://www.amazon.com/Oddtone-Desktop-Computer-External-Motherboard/dp/B0BXSVQT5T?th=1
You'll unplug the power/reset headers from the case.
Plug this in, that's your new power button.
I'd probably route mine through either a ventilation slit in my case, drill a small hole in the side panel and feed the tiny headers through it, or through a PCIe slot (usually they have slits for ventilation if it fits.)

Double sided tape over the power button worked for me for many years. Eventually the lil bastard learned to stay away! Bonus if you throw some extra little bits of tape in other areas around the PC. Now (25 years later) all cats avoid my desk entirely.
shaard@reddit
My cat kept trying to get on top of the case and would sometimes press the power button. First I just took an old credit card and tapped it over the button like a hat switch cover. Then I worked on discouraging him from going up there. Threat of spray bottle, or a little squirt of some bitter apple stuff in a cap in the area and he avoids it now.

My son has a pc connected to his TV, wireless keyboard, mouse etc. I ran doorbell wire behind the baseboard trim to his head board of his bed, with the button mounted there to turn it on. He loved it
Megaranator@reddit

my cat likes to sleep on top of the PC, which has both the power button and an important vent. So I was forced to leave a layer of tin foil up top, in sort of an arch so it also doesn't block the vent. It works.

Set something on top of the button. I usually use a coaster but genuinely just put anything on it. I’ve used a timer, a can of bug spray, a flashlight, a carpenters square. Just grab something off your desk and set it on the button when you notice the cat is around

I had exactly same problem. Here is my homemade solution: https://i.imgur.com/PN2m7Nn.png
The WiFi antenna that came with the PC has magnetic case. I just stuck that on top of the power button. If I need to use the button, I slide it away, use the button and slide back.
Inevitable_Virus_765@reddit
The permanent solution is a computer case that has the buttons on the front, not top. In the past though id just put a flat object on top. I've used a rigid lid, like a peanut butter or pickle jar lid, or a disc golf disk. That way the cat walking on the area won't trigger the individual button
windowpuncher@reddit
You can also just get a cheap cover that sticks to the case and flips up for button access when you need it. Cheaper than a new case.
ButterscotchFar1629@reddit
A piece of duct tape.
flexylol@reddit
Those who designed these PC cases with button ON TOP definitely don't have cats - just like the morons who designed stove tops with touch-buttons.
When I had cats, I made DIY lids for buttons, made from a small plastic lid fixed near the button with some adhesive tape. So you can lift/close the lid over the buttons and they can't be pressed even if cats are on the PC
SirMaster@reddit

After one of my cats accidentally "leaked" on my PC and fried it, I was very adamant about them not getting on the PC. It's the few times I'll act wild towards them.
Yes, I did take kitty to the vet afterwards. I learned dhe had crystals in his urine. He's been on prescription food for 10 years. No, I couldn't feed him and his brother different foods. The food 10 years ago was $40 for 7 pound bag. It's up to $70 now.
But yeah, after about 5 times of "going berserk" they haven't gone near the PC in years. They just learned "dad gets weird when we go near that hot box."
Now when I say "going berserk" it was never towards them. They would jump on it and I'd just do random loud shit. Like get up from my chair and run around the room/house screaming. Or stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down, slink on the floor and flail.
I didn't want to make them fearful of me. Just fearful of the comfy heated box.

Boop the cat before he reaches the power button.

My cats used to do that with the power button on the printer. A piece of cardboard wasn't enough so I 3D printed a hinged cover to put over it.
ozdude182@reddit
Uninstall the cat.
Embarrassed-Rest-867@reddit
Safety switch, a second part to the power, set it so it only goes to sleep with the one your cat can reach but power off when both are tripped.
dmendro@reddit
Disable the cat.

Turn the PC onto it's side, so that it's motherboard is on bottom.

I had this issue a couple years ago. My solution was to put a strip of scotch tape over the button. It has enough give for me to push the button with enough pressure, but not for a cat casually strolling by on my tower.
whatsyanamejack@reddit
Had the same issue.
My solution was to plug in a USB cable that sits next to the power button on my case. It was enough of an obstacle that my cat won't step in that general little 4 inch area anymore lol. That was a quick fix I implemented while I was in the middle of working. Now that I'm thinking about It I should probably reassign what the power button does in Windows settings. Probably the better option.

I have a Qube 500. The power button is hard enough for me to press, let alone my cat.

Tape a piece of cardboard over the button

Replace your cat with a canary. If that's unacceptable, maybe something like this will work: https://www.amazon.ca/DaierTek-Plastic-Pushbutton-Actuator-Mounting/dp/B08LZ658YW/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.zIxsBiJIYbcxWLrNEvjRgnyCLApx-tNoSPql5MmtR2mWrIU_8hENsmJt3xdh8Ni7_lzZsqEvG4uPt5ptvH03fLJzW4ZrVY1MJjR9CLC4w_RGsXMks6bsSg7IKCLLaQDSR2DAeRsDLwGI4TnGnbQrWZVCgPyKR81pML0Jth6Flm3FMWGywnC8cvTw_yuPNv3mWqoj4wVpof4_hcp_yX1h5hngnMQeZEuIztHVGLLP-LFRVPsLBtjlPt7dIs-lADLRsqf2yIo_OZB4mTS620tQEX0mij5-3ydnBBWKGZVr5tk.-TCxbT1H4Le3ntJsvhK6oknV7TVN1JjYIRUbVttfNoQ&dib_tag=se&keywords=power+button+cover&qid=1776873743&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1.

Just disable the power button in Windows.
It'll still work if it's switched off.

Disconnect the current power switch, and put the reset as the new power switch...
Errorr404@reddit
flip switch with a cover, there are ones that connect to your mobo power switch headers.

I have one of those disk stacking things for your kitchen on top of my PC to hold the controllers, allow airflow, and discourage the cats from going on top.
Otherwise literally just cover the button.
