Why? Shes never had a *need* to know about Arch Linux. Shes an old-head enterprise engineer. Hence why her homelab runs Red Hat and why she assumed you'd be running Debian or CentOS. Those are the ecosystems relevant to her career - So it makes sense that she wouldn't really have a hobby to dabble in Arch.

Pacman was even ported to Windows, it's not like it's an obscure distros, the Arch wiki is recommended even among Debian users and it's surprising knowing about It? Not saying she must know about It, but OP being surprised isn't that weird when the Arch wiki is still today the biggest wiki for Linux and the AUR is the biggest repo (after NixOS) out there

I'm not disagreeing with you or putting Arch down, merely pointing out that Arch is a relative newcomer, and its popularity has increased in tandem with a more casual (i.e. non-corporate) userbase, who encounter Linux on social platforms as opposed to data centers or mainframes. Anyone who has used z/OS is aware of Linux desktops. Not all Linux desktop users spend time wondering about z/OS. That kinda vibe.

Well, just my opinion, but Arch isn't just "more more more". It may not be as old as Debian or Slackware, but it holds a place as one of the big 3 parent distros (Debian, Fedora, Arch). Each giving a base for people to build from. Is Arch for everyone, no. Is Arch a good distro, yes, especially if you enjoy a bit of tinkering. But at the end of the day, run what lets you get your work done.

Of course. If you use linux only in an enterprise setting, you wont hear of arch or similar hobbyist distros.

A lot of people in Enterprise and scientific fields use Linux not necessarily because they like it, but because they have to, and she properly falls into this group. Not saying she dislikes it but maybe she does. Maybe she will embrace the Arch spirit and actually like Linux even more :)

This is a rather recent distribution. Not used in enterprise. So that checks out. I bet she knows AIX, z/OS, HPUX, Cray or System V much better than you do however.

I found it a bit of a shock when I got my first software engineering job, granted it’s a smallish company, that pretty much none of my coworkers knew about or did open source. It’s a mostly Microsoft shop (we have Linux because of services I’ve deployed). But yea, I figured there woulda been people who did or at least tracked some open source projects. No one knew anything about Docker, couldn’t name a Linux distro and if they could, it was a single one that they only know about because they used it in a single class in college in 2011. It was a shock for me because open source is why got me into software engineering. Then to be on a team where everyone was the exact opposite.

Yeah this is the opposite with my dad, my mom doesn't even use a computer, she does everything on her phone, but my dad has a home server using Linux, I think it's using some lite weight Linux because the CPU is so damn slow Linux can't save it, I dual boot, but my dad gave up on using Linux as his primary machine, he did not want to go back to windows so he actually went to Mac, and I grew up using Linux so hencs I really struggle with windows.

And? there are computer engineers with 30-40 years experience and they don't even know what ubuntu, debian or red hat is. They don't even know what a distro is and I'd be surprised if they even know what linux even is. It isn't uncommon for people who work on things just stick to their job and not keep up with changes unless it concerns them,

Because she had used Linux in enterprise grade hardware and in that area Arch is seldom used if ever, that's why she doesn't know it, but hey, give her a shot, let her teach you Linux the way she knows it, you will learn a lot.

Why would this be surprising ? No one in the enterprise world is going to be running arch? Red Hat yes Suse enterprise linux yes Debian Yes CentOS yes Arch probably not.
